Energy Recycle System

We are trying to build a food and energy sustainable system for 50,000 residents.People can access fresh food from agriculture which is powered by solar energy and waste recovery.Food is expected to be produced from 4 types of agricultural system, field crop farm, soil based farm, orchard and hydroponic. All kinds of farms will be connected to a food factory through the food processing streamline, which helps in harvesting and cleaning goods from land. The waste and composts from processing will be transported to the compost center to generate electricity, powering the food production and cities. The solar panel system located on the farmland will be another part of energy production to run the whole city.

This program tends to help chinese immigrants to face the potential climate crisis in 2100. Many of them sell food by vendors and markets. When sea level rise due to carbon emission, they are hard to keep their business. When looking at the small business, we focus on the unique food supply chain system in Chinatown that is different from others in NewYork city. The wholesalers sell to each produce market in Chinatown neighborhood. We are trying to help them and their children to maintain their livelihood by creating a mixed-use produce market and community center; and to reduce the carbon footprint by cutting the long distance airline from Miami and create a railway system by transporting vegetables to our program.

16

17

02

INFORMAL MARKET

As the sea level rising in 2100, some urban road transportation will be cut down. But the current railway system in New york city will be affected less. Facing the potential climate crisis, we are working on designing a community center transit to reconnect the food supply chain, supporting Chinese immigrants with their business and life. We hope to replace the long-distance food source from Miami with new transportation, which will reconnect urban and regional community gardens and greenhouses through railways to form a food supply network.

INFORMAL MARKET

02

We were looking at three perspectives of informal urbanism- Hacking,Non-Binary and Trespassing. We have extracted three behavioral fragments from Project1, focusing on the characteristics of Street vendor, Food Cart and Signage.

Chinese Immigrants & Food Supply Chain

We start our program with designing heterogeneous conveyor system which is the anti-type in our program. Compared with general staircase and circulation, our informal convey system could be regarded as a combination of function and transportation.

18

To support more chinese immigrants in Queens, our Site is located in downtown Flushing which is the most concentrated area of local business with various Chinese snack shops, retail wholesaler, and food carts on the sidewalk. In order to connect our program with the railway network, we will take an old restaurant next to the railway on the 40th street.

Daytime

Greenhouses will be created on the top of industrial buildings, factories and shopping malls like auto repair and Macy’s that are next to the railway and our building will distribute cheap cooked food to the other immigrant communities. Green House System will reconnect urban and regional community gardens and greenhouses through railways to form a food supply network.

The solid part is made of Polycarbonate envelope with internal CLT panel, while the void part is made of glass with steel structure. In the daytime, the chair and table will be stored away. The food carts will show on the building facade to attract consumers on the street, this activities can be served as a dynamic signage.

In order to increase consumption of batteries, some truck stops are expected to be a Transit that connects renewable energy consumption and battery manufacturing. Electric trucks will be a part of factories.I started my project with designing a trailer which is a potential part integrated with automatic factories. The trailer will participate in Re-use of batteries, so it can be a movable battery recycling point collecting exhausted batteries and bringing them to the factory. Robotic trailer logistic systems will liberate labors from loading and reloading. The trailer will also become a batteries warehouse where recycled batteries charge. The solar and wind will generate electricity to charge the products and truck. My truck stops are connected with factories, and truck drivers and workers in factories can interact with each other in my building simultaneously, occupying this heterotopic space or heterotopia which is mentioned by Michel Foucault.

Truck Stop ? Heterotopia !

Based on Micheal Foucult’s great concept of Heterotopia, Heterotopic spaces have power to juxtapose several real places and explacement simultaneously. New truck stop will be a heterotopic space which is a combination of highway, automatic factory, electric vehicles, people with different cultural backgrounds and renewable energy stations. This transit will be separated into 3 layers, vehicles, robots and humans. The space on the factory for humans not only will be a truck stop, but will be a cluster with restaurants, motel, office building and roof garden. Motels and showers in a modern truck stop will change as well. Discarded trailer will be transformed into rooms like hotel rooms and showers, In this heterotopic space, new activities will be brought in old devices. Restaurants and retails connects with recharging piles provide open space for people with different cultural backgrounds. Compared with a normal truckstop with separated service stream lines, my design encourages visitors to interact with others in the restaurant. 28

The truck stop tends to save more resources by materials recycling and structure optimization. CLT is an ideal material for building an environmentally friendly truck stop. Sustainably managed forests convert CO2 into biomass through the process of photosynthesis. CLT contains biomass and its panels and any other individual elements are recyclable, they are able to be sent back to the manufacturer for reuse and recycling. To minimize the weight and volume of structure by generative design, the mechanical system will be optimized. Maintain the stability of the structure with less materials, saving more resources by calculation. 31

With the end of China’s old industrial era, unproductive waste factories occupy a lot of urban lands and spaces. In the disposal of these buildings, there is always a contradiction between people's emotions and building program. This renovation project, one abolished factory was transformed into an industrial art museum, trying to preserve the memory of history and to explore its potential programs. This design retained the main structure of the old factory, so that the memory of local residents could be preserved. In addition, new exhibition units were integrated into the original building to reorganize the streamline and show the culture and history of the mining area. Combined with a surrounding cultural industrial park, the exhibition hall might provide a space for local artists to exchange ideas and revitalize the art industry.

Education motivates our design. The private schools are dominating the Werst Windsor, that’s probably because Princeton University is there, but the absence of public schools is still obvious. Based on all the data we have, we believe that there is a need for a community college that not only promotes education but also helps with bridging the gap. Considering the average education level in the region is still higher than others. we think that having a graduate school is also reasonable. Therefore the community college and the professional climate school would be our focus. To better serve its community, the school we believe should also provide another pathway to achieve the goal of education. So, here people can also receive skill training and become climate technicians. Therefore our school will have two main parts which are climate community center and climate school. The Planting lab is expected to serve climate school and the community. A natural and public friendly space shared by the community. This design’s goal is shafting from constructing the social to facilitating socialites. This is the least we can do.

The tiny Pacific island of Tuvalu will be submerged within one hundred years as global warming raises sea levels. In the design of the maritime city, the city was rebuilt from the original site of Tuvalu, which sank to the bottom of the sea already, towards to the sea level just liked phototropic coral’s growing up. The new settlement was made up of units that could be self-sufficient in energy and fresh water. It would provide local residents with places to live and fish, as well as accommodation, leisure entertainment, underwater relic tour, and other services for tourists. Tourism and fishery continued to be the backbone of the island’s economy after it was submerged. The Tuvalu civilization could survive in a new way. Architectural design may revive industries that will be hit hard.

This project involves a two-stage optimization process for a compression shell structure that is situated within the exhibition venue of Venice Biennale. The goal of this project is to design a compression shell structure that is generated based on both perceived obstacles (boundaries, columns, and exhibits) and projected constraints (circulation), to articulate a bespoken spatial experience aligned with site conditions. The structure of a compression shell reaches optimum efficiency when it consists of catenary arches. Coupling simulator Kangaroo with Discover, this project takes place on complex site conditions, allowing visitor circulation and existing obstacles to be the driving factors that define the synclastic shell structure.Circulation simulation, which initially specifies the site constraints and visiting experiences as input data, will be also implemented during the optimization process. By quantitatively showing the performance of spatial occupancy and streamline, this visual pedestrian simulation joins into the optimization iteration process along with structural simulation. And we are looking for some interoperable strategies between these evaluation criteria that could be generated in next steps.

Wood is a renewable green energy source, and trees are also natural barriers for greening air and preventing dust in the process of growth. To a certain extent, the contemporary construction of Chinese buildings has caused damage to the environment. Because of wood's special advantages, wood structure buildings will gradually enter people's vision. I attended summer school and came to Vancouver to learn about wood architecture, and completed the conceptual design of Stanley park gate. Nowadays, many elderly people in China take public square dancing as their main way of communication. This square dancing with loud music and unchanging dancing style, which usually occupies public squares often, causes confusion among young people. In my square dancing machine design, I conceived a set of structure units combined with projection technology. They could be combined in different forms to make different spaces and stage effects with projectors. Cool light effect might add more fashion elements to square dancing. Individual structure units could also be turned into separate dancing machines, which would attract more young people to join. The mutual communication between the two generations could be strengthened while dancing together, and the generation gap would be alleviated to some extent.
