CAPITOL COMPLEX Andhra Pradesh
Architecture that meets the people
3
apitol Complexes have traditionally been designed as secluded and extravagant buildings that have had little relationship with the city. In a way, they violate the fundamental priciple of a Democracy, which is a government ‘By the people, for the people & of the people. This project intends to lay a design scheme that has democratic principles firmly rooted, one which idealises the equality and expresses it through Urban design and architecture; And in turn serving the most important client for the project, the General Public. This project intends to give the people of Andhra Pradesh, a
new identity after their loss of a historical capital , Hyderabad. The architecture takes inspiration from the rich medieval past of the Andhra People, and from their most important historic sites. Security concerns become more highlighted in light of such an ambitious attempt at bringing people closer to these important goverment buildings, hence these issues have been resolved by employing various strategies at different places in the complex.

THESIS
C
Judiciary Symbolic Juxtapositioning in Multiple Triad Arrangement
he overall scheme refers to the fundamental of Democracy, which are the three pillars - Executive, Legislature and Judiciary. Since the intent is to idealise democracy, The Legislative Assembly shall act as the focal point of the whole arrangement. The Assembly shall also be connected to a plaza that will be a visual connection between the three buildings in the Democratic Traid. The plaza will in turn be connected to a riverfront development system. The idea is to award the riverfront on this strategic location to the general people, in turn encouraging public gathering and exchange of ideas. Furthermore, it is suggested that the land in the vicinity of the complex be used for parks and Civic Buildings such as Museum, Theatre, Library etc. so that the whole area can act as a cultural & social hub of the city.

THESIS
T
he Capitol Buildings placed in a formal arrangement and axial symmetry. The Plaza becomes the connection between the High Court, Secretariat and the Assembly, while enabling the general public form a closer relationship with these important governement buildings. The Riverfront is reserved to be enjoyed by the public and is effectively connected to the Capitol Plaza. While the Governor’s Residence is separated from the active public areas for privacy, while acting as the terminating point in the axis originating from the Legislative Assembly. The Residence is bound by large public parks on both the sides while maintaining sufficient distance from them. These parks are in turn connected to the Plaza through two separate entry gates and are served by common parking arrangement.

The layout scheme intends to achieve usable public space integration with the Capitol Buildings. This is done by connecting the Public Entrance to the Legislative Assembly Building to the Plaza, which is in turn connected to an extended riverfront development. The proposed road along the river is elevated to segregate the vehicular and the pedestrian circulation, while providing public access to the complex at multiple entry points. Security checkposts are placed at strategic locations to secure the vicinity of Capitol Buildings.

THESIS
Ashoka Chakra acts as the symbolic link to the ancient past and acts as a dominating form overlooking the Plaza and Riverfront.
Inclined roof lines break the symmetry into an abstract composition from all sides

T
Courtyards let in ample natural light and allow free circulation of air within the building against hot & humid climate
Double height covered entrances to match up to the nature of the building
he Plan arrangement is based on the idea of served and servant spaces. The Lower House naturally becomes the most important function of the building, hence adjusts in the center, with auxillary spaces arranged around in in four courtyard systems. These courtyards provide an introvert environment within the building and signiďŹ cally help in climate control. The building features are heavily inspired from the historical context of the state, taking cues from many stone cut caves and temples, as well as high forts. The facade of the building is meant to radiate a sense of timelessness, which would impart it a strong visual connection with the glory of the past capital of Amaravati. The facades of the building are clad with limestone and brick, which are locally available and have been the material of choice for hundreds of years in the region. The Lower House is topped by a roof inspired from an Ashoka Stambh and Stupa, which are a few hundred kilometers from the site. The Ashoka Chakra imparts the symbolic refernce to the buildibng, with 24 spokes having a special meaning according to buddhist religion. It also imparts the connection with the Government of India, which uses the Ashoka Chakra on emblems and ags.

THESIS
T
he area is prone to hot climate with high levels of humidity all around the year. The presence of interconnected courtyards ensures steady flow of air throughout the building thus cancelling out the humidity. Presence of courtyards on all 4 sides ensures the catchment of changing directions of wind. Within a courtyard, hot air from the rooms rises upwards and cooler air rushes to take its place, thus this dual air current is created, one within the courtyards and one between them. The walls of the outer facade of the building are strategically recessed and the windows are placed perpendicular to the building boundary. Thus direct sunlight is unable to penetrate the rooms for the most part of the day, and unecessary heat gain is avoided. This system also cuts off wind driven rain without the need to elaborate louvre mechanisms.
Windows placed on sides of recessed walls cut off steep angles of the sun and provided reflected light for the most of the day

Photo Gallery National Police Academy, Hyderabad 2012 The client wanted a change of space use for a part of the existing library into a photo gallery that would house rare photographs possessed by the academy since 1948. The already existing ceiling height was considerably low, hence the display panels were designed keeping in mind the ventilation of the gallery. The layout of the panels was formulated considering the unhampered movement of the visitors in the gallery. Work included designing of the layout, interiors and lighting.

The assignment involved documenting the 17th century structure, analyse its defects and their causes. This structure, although famous, lay in ruins as local people had encroached the surrounding land and demolished part of it. The structure was found to be neglected by the ASI and INTACH for being just 500m from the international border, but our team devised interventions to improve its condition and help aid the tourism of the region.
