Miyoshi, Tokushima,
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, many people in Japan have begun moving from larger cities such as neighboring Osaka and Kobe towards smaller cities like Miyoshi to escape crowded cities and congested spaces to a much more open area, and able to live from your own land. This projects takes a previously abandoned elementary school, turned cafe by Yohei, into a public landmark for humans and raccoons alike. This area is a complimentary area for wild raccoons as it hugs the nearby river and the dense forest with sloping valleys allow for the raccons safety and lookouts. The new implementations consist of a large mega-structure that mimics a tree canopy and provides areas for nurture, recreation, waste, and feeding. Other aspects of the structure allow for cooling/heating, light modulation through openings in the waffle structure. Other additions include an extended platform that leads to a theater like space sunken into the ground, a tanuki (japanese mythical raccoon-like creature) shrine, and an Information center with a view, which houses a rare berry bush in an oculus space.

For the precedent study required of us this semester, out of a list I picked the Moriyama House by Ryue Nishizawa due to it’s design aspect of building a community out of a single traditional home; 10 buildings ranging from 1 to 3 floors having distinct spaces for each one, in which the main bathroom being located in the middle (building D). This project allowed me to have a stronger understanding of softwares such as Rhino 3D, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as showing how different social theories and commentary can be implemented into a site.
