MASTER'S THESIS: ZUYD UNIVERSITY 2020 In this project, design thinking had a multitude of applications including cover design and book layout; above is the folded out cover design of this publication.
page layouts Here are a couple examples of page layouts within this thesis; to see the whole publication, view arosesauer.com/thesis. For layout design within a printed work, composing images to fit with text for clarity and intrigue is extremely important.
BAJA FIELD GUIDE: CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE 2017 This field guide was fully illustrated and designed for use in education and outreach in the region of San Juanico in Baja California Sur, Mexico.
To the left is the cover design with an illustration overlaid with the title and logo; on the right are some page layout examples showcasing each animal's traits.
Infographics & Poster Design Education & Information Visuals
WHALE STRANDING POSTER: NATURALIS 2020 A poster designed for Naturalis museum for outreach of their research on sperm whale strandings.
VECTOR GRAPHICS Several icons were created for use in the layout of this infographic for purposes of visualizing information in the text.
VISUAL COMMUNICATION Visualizing information in this way is extremely beneficial to convey a lot of info in a simple way for viewers to get the most out of this resource.
SIMPLE & ENGAGING This poster also includes a schematized view of the whale's anatomy for the purpose of showing which organization researches what aspect of the whale. Icons were made to represent each institution which corresponded with the anatomy.
COMPOUND EYE INFOGRAPHIC POSTER: ZUYD UNIVERSITY 2019
This infographic used creative layout design to separate and condense a lot of information about a complex subject into a readable, fun, and digestible format.
UNIQUE LAYOUT The three arches in this layout allow the incorporation of a consistent theme of the shapes of the compound eye as shown to the right, as well as directing the information into three distinct sections for readability.
PLAYFUL VISUALS The colors of the mantis shrimp and unique shapes of compound eye anatomy allow for playful use of color and design to make this dense and complicated subject both visually appealing and understandable.
INFORMATIVE ICONS The information is not only described in the text but visually represented in original icons.
HELPFUL CONTEXT While this infographic is about compound eyes, a diverse range of descriptive graphics show different features and comparisons to give a better understanding of the subject.
Interactivity & E-Learning
Creating lasting comprehension is fundamentally important for visual learning.
LION INFOGRAPHIC This tool was created as a resource to learn how lions are affected by snares in Africa. The infographic is designed in a vertical layout to be scrolled through and interacted with to read stories about lions.
CLICKABLE Buttons in the infographic can be clicked to launch information and storylines of lions.
The interactivity was primarily created using Adobe Animate.
FACIAL ANATOMY This is a learning tool for certain aspects of facial anatomy that allows the user to click on different features to display information. The interactivity was primarily done in Indesign.
SURGERY EDUCATION As a tool for students learning the process of this surgery, this layout was designed with Illustrator to show important features and zooms, with the interactivity being done in Indesign.
Vector Illustration & Logo Design Unique creations for any project
THESIS COVER Original vector illustrations and compositions of animals that represented the thesis subjects were made for this experimental cover design. Color was very important in the consistency of the book, with themes of orange and blue made to contrast each other.
STICKER DESIGN Vector illustrations are a great and simple way to create fun merch items or social media posts using simple shapes and consistent themes.
ANIMAL & ICON DESIGNS Creating simple images of animals or distilling a topic into a graphic icon can generate versatile creations that can be used for many purposes, whether merch, website icons, or even logos.
Logos From ideas to finished DETERMINING YOUR BRAND Your goals and brand as a company distilled into a single icon. SKETCHING IDEATIONS Coming up with ideas through sketches and drafts to be decided by you. CREATING FINAL VECTOR LOGO Choosing the direction to be completed with sleek vector graphics for use on any platform.
500 QUEER SCIENTISTS For this assignment, the colors and brand name were predetermined with this awareness cause, which then could be elaborated by finding the right font and format for a succinct design (Drafts above).
PROCESS SKETCHES
SNAKE LOGO Ideations are important to narrow down what direction most aligns with your desired vision. Here are several sketched ideas for a logo to showcase the beauty of snakes rather than the danger for the purpose of conservation.
ARACHNOLOGY LOGO Determining the feel of the logo is also important in the sketching stage. In this case, after sketching lots of different directions it became important to emphasize the nerdiness of this group of scientists in this fun and quirky logo design.
