Message from the Mayor “Acworth is the Dining Destination” Here we are in the middle of the most challenging economy since the great depression and we have 10 business owners opening 10 new restaurants in the city of Acworth. In the closing moments of 2011, we are experiencing a restaurant opening boom. During the past 10 years we have developed a community of quality restaurants which has created an unprecedented reputation for great dining experiences. Our reputation for great dining draws people from all over Georgia to come and dine in Acworth. Our 10 new restaurants include: Creekside Tavern, Zorba’s Kitchen and Marlin & Ray’s all located on Hwy 41; Rico’s Mex Mex located on Southside Drive; Center Street Tavern and The Old Mill Restaurant (new owners) located in historic downtown; Fish Thyme Restaurant and Parkside Italian Kitchen on South Main Street just across from the baseball field; and JD’s BBQ and STARS Subs, Wings & Things on Main Street. Please be sure to dine with every restaurant in our town and when you do … you will not experience duplication of any menu or cuisine … every one of our restaurants are unique in their food, culture and dining experiences … yet another reason we are the “restaurant destination.” To our supportive community and all of the restaurant owners and staff … thanks for making … “Acworth the Dining Destination” … in all of Georgia! — Mayor Tommy Allegood

Why Haven’t Fibromyalgia Sufferers Been Told These Facts? Do you feel like every drop of energy is drained from your body and most days you just hurt all over? Does going to the bathroom feel like a ten-mile hike? Even after numerous tests with your doctor, do they say “we can’t find anything wrong ?” You are not alone. Six million Americans suffer from the effects of fibromyalgia. But the sad fact is most of them have been told they’re crazy, lazy, or just depressed. Do You Have Any of the Following Symptoms? • Aching all over • Disturbed sleep • Tender points in the neck, spine, shoulders and hips • Recurring headaches • Fatigue & Stiffness “You’ve Been Everywhere, Tried Everything, And You’re Still Suffering” Maybe your doctor doesn’t even think fibromyalgia is a real disease, but you know it is. You suffer with it every day. One fibromyalgia patient said it like this… “I am so tired of the guilt of not being able to keep my house the way I like or fix dinner for my husband all the time. With the girls and the meds and pain I can barely just get that done, let alone clean and cook dinner most days.” Another said… “For people who take good health for granted, it’s hard to imagine a condition that makes simple tasks great tests of will and determination.” Fibromyalgia is often called the invisible disease. You look fine on the surface, but underneath you’re often exhausted and in excruciating pain. My name is Dr. Amy Valente. Over the past several years I’ve used gentle treatments to help hundreds of fibromyalgia patients feel better and live healthier, more joyful lives. The more patients I helped get better, the more I realized that…
No Woman Should Have To Suffer The Way You Do. I’ve made it my mission in practice to help those suffering with chronic pain like you. Because of this, I’m running a special offer for women suffering from fibromyalgia. For 16 days only, $20 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $250 for! What does this offer include? • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms… (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free.
To give you an example of how you can be helped just listen to what someone else has to say about it:
Dr. Amy Velente
I had been suffering with fibromyalgia for 4 years and had been treated by drugs which were not helping. Now I have been getting adjusted for four months and have stopped taking all of my medication and do not have any symptoms! My headaches and muscle pain have stopped and I can sleep at night! I feel healthy and alive again! Thanks- Dawn To have a doctor finally tell you what’s wrong and what you can do to help yourself feel better. By working together, we can customize a treatment plan just for you. And best of all, there will be… No Harmful Drugs, No Uncertain Procedures, And No Intimidation.
I’ll provide answers to all your most probing questions about fibromyalgia like…
A woman knows her own body.
…the best nutritional supplements proven to help with fibromyalgia.
Internally you can sense that certain areas of your body aren’t as they should be.
…which position, mattress, and pillow you should use for a good night’s rest.
Healing those areas will give you more energy, less pain, and a better life!
…the foods that can help you and which ones can make you worse.
Call Today and tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Fibromyalgia Evaluation before December 15th.
…how to exercise the right way so you aren’t making your pain worse. The offer is only good until Dec. 15th. The appointment will not take long at all. And you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. For Many Women, There Is Hope. You Just Need The Right Plan. Imagine how great you could feel without your constant fatigue and nagging pains. Imagine waking up each morning, jumping out of bed, and enjoying the day…no more waking up and feeling like you got hit by a truck. Imagine not having to take handfuls of pain pills that haven’t helped and can have side effects. Imagine what it would be like to finally have hope again.

I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more joyful life. Sincerely, Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. P.S. What Will Your Fibromyalgia Pain Feel Like 1 Month From Today? One of the biggest myths about pain is that it goes away all by itself, without any treatment. Let’s face it, if the pain hasn’t gone away by now, it’s not likely to disappear on its own. Don’t let this be you, call me today and see if I can help you. Our office is located at 3451 Cobb Parkway, Suite 6 Acworth, GA

As parents in the midst of the Christmas shopping season, we are constantly faced with choices between the intense desires of our children in the here and now versus what will be of greatest benefit to them over time. In considering this issue, I think that almost all parents would agree that it is an important long-term goal of parenting to lead our children to become emotionally mature, self-sufficient young adults. Few parents would ever want their children to remain financially dependent, emotionally immature and unable to go through adulthood without constant parental intervention. With this in mind, I find it ironic when parents who want their children to grow independent from them raise their children with broad expectations of life-long dependency on government.
Opportunity generations, the expansion of these programs inevitably leads to an expanded overall dependency on government by the whole. In these circumstances, fewer and fewer members of society become net-providers and more and more members become net-consumers of government provided services. What becomes clear over the long-term is that programs that expand overall public “dependency” on government, no matter how well intentioned, typically deliver only short-term benefits. While apparent gains, such as more children covered under Medicaid, seem to solve our immediate healthcare problems, they do not provide the dynamic conditions required for fewer American families to be in need of Medicaid.
So, how can elected officials be most effective in influencing the future of I must admit that as I talk to citizens across the our nation? By doing more? By doing country and even analyze my own long-held nothing? I would suggest that our beliefs, the “pro-dependency on government bug” role as policy makers should be that seems to infect more of our views than many of us of catalyst, not problem solver. Given the reality of large portions of Europe going bankrupt in an addiction to spending, what would America look like over the course of two or three generations if we continue our recent creep toward a government-centric European system? If we have learned anything from Europe in 2011, it is that the laws of Economics are as inescapable as the laws of Gravity...and in the words of Margaret Thatcher, “the trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” Put simply, which society over the long-term would be more desirable: (1) a society in which 90% of its citizens were dependent on government for the delivery of basic services or (2) a society in which 90% of its citizens were independent of government for the delivery of basic services? With these ideas in mind, I encourage you this Christmas Season to actively examine your own beliefs about the appropriate role of government in a free society. Are the policies and programs that you demand at the ballot box over the long-term going to expand independency or are they going to make more and more individuals increasingly dependent on government to meet their basic needs? Ask yourself, what Christmas gift would you like to send forward 100 years to your great-great-grandchildren, an America of increased opportunity or an America of increased dependency on government? Little Ways You Might Improve Your Financial Life some things to think about this year – and every year.
This is the year! Yes, you can make 2012 the year you alter your financial life for a better financial future. Let’s look at some steps you might think of taking with the goal of financial freedom in mind.
Don Akridge, MBA, CPA, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ U.S. Marine Corps Veteran – Emory University Alumnus
No, we’re not talking about those ridiculously obvious steps the usual articles recommend, like “write your goals down” and “set a budget.” Let’s go past the clichés and get into the real issues.
Look at your income source, your expenses and your debt. How do you earn income? If you earn it from one source, is there effectively a ceiling on it, or is there real potential for your income to rise in the next few years? Now look at your core living expenses, the ones you can’t avoid such as a mortgage payment, car payment, etc. Can any core expenses be reduced? Investing aside, you position yourself to gain ground financially when income rises, debt diminishes and expenses stay (relatively) the same. Maybe you should pay your debt first, maybe not. If you are a business owner or a professional, for example, you’ll likely always have some debt. Your ultimate goal should be to build wealth — and you can plan to build wealth and minimize debt at the same time. Some debt is “good” debt. A debt is “good” if it brings you income. If you buy a rental property, you’re paying a mortgage, but that’s considered a “good” debt because you’re getting passive income from the rent payments. Credit cards are “bad” debts. If you’ll be carrying a debt for a while, put it to a test. Weigh the interest rate on that specific debt against your potential income growth rate and your potential investment returns over the term of the debt. If the interest rate on that debt looks like it will outpace your income growth and investment returns, then you should really think about paying that debt down fast, because you can’t afford that interest rate. Of course, paying off your debts, paying down balances and restricting new debts all works toward improving your FICO score, another tool you can use in pursuit of financial freedom (we’re talking “good” debts.) Implement or refine an investment strategy. You can’t refrain from investing, even when the bears are out. You’re not going to retire on the relatively small elective deferrals from your continued on page 46 36

Should I Use SMS Marketing for My Business? Imagine what it would be like to be able to immediately send special personalized messages directly to your customers’ mobile devices about your daily specials, contests, etc.! Well, this can be achieved through SMS (Short Message Service) Marketing. Just what is SMS? SMS is most commonly known as “text messaging” using your mobile devices. It is one Don Kyle of the most common ways people communicate with each other today. There are more than 4 billion mobile phones around the world, and more than 86% of Americans own mobile phones. As you can see, text messaging is extremely prevalent today. Many providers that offer SMS marketing programs to businesses allow you access to an Internet-based dashboard. This tool can allow you to manage your SMS marketing campaigns very effectively. SMS marketing campaigns can be used by your business to promote Scheduled Offers, Excess Inventory, New Items, Contests and Fundraisers, and much more. There are many advantages to SMS marketing campaigns. Some of the key advantages include: • Building a database of loyal customers (subscribers) for your business. • Creating multiple opt-in lists of subscribers based on different key words for your campaigns, e.g., Daily Specials, Special Promotions, Contests and Awards, etc. • Selecting subscribers within specified lists and sending offers instantly to create a “smart mob” of customers. • Scheduling messages you want to send to selected subscribers at pre-determined dates and times. It is important to keep in mind that your subscribers already have told you that they want to hear about your specials, contests, etc. In other words, they have given you permission to advertise your promotions directly to them. It is also very important that your subscribers are given the option to opt out of your lists at any time. If you have questions or would like more information on SMS Marketing for your business, please feel free to contact me. Do You Have Room To Expand A few weeks ago, I received a letter from the Cherokee County water department informing me that they were installing a back flow preventer on our home. They were letting us know of a need to have a thermal expansion tank installed in our plumbing system in order to prevent possible damage to our home. Dan Jape
All cities and counties have installed or are installing back flow preventers to stop the possible contamination of the water supply in homes. A back flow preventer is a one-way valve installed at the connection of your home’s water supply and it makes the home a closed system that has no room for expansion, which occurs when water is heated. A thermal expansion tank is required to stop the possibility of an over pressure situation that can cause damage to the water heater and the temperature and pressure relief valve in your home. The letter from the county gave us 30 days to have an expansion tank installed before the backflow valve was installed in our subdivision. Cherokee County is currently putting the backflow valves in all homes and you should check with the water department to see when they are scheduled to do your home if you are a resident

of Cherokee. Cobb and Fulton counties have already installed these valves in past years and if you live in these areas, you should already have a thermal expansion tank in your home. If you do not, you should have one installed immediately, as the lack of one can cause damage to the water heater or a collapse of the flue of a water heater, which can be very serious. They are round cylinders installed above or adjacent to the water heater and they contain a bladder filled with air pressure that allows excess pressure a place to expand. Until recently, I thought the thermal expansion tank was an item that would last for years with no maintenance required from the homeowner, and once you had one, you were set. But I found out I was wrong. Recently, I was called to a home to give a customer a price on a new heating system and I was surprised to find the first floor of their home had been severely flooded when their thermal expansion tank had burst and leaked water on their furnace and filled their basement while they were away on vacation. They found out the hard way that thermal expansion tanks should be changed every 5 or 6 years, according to the manufacturers. They are very easy to change once you have one and can be purchased at any home improvement or hardware store, as well as from your plumber. In most homes in Atlanta, a floor drain was not installed in the basement during construction, making a water leak from continued on page 46
The Immune System It’s that time of year again when we have to be on the defense with colds and flus. It is especially important that we understand our immune system and what it does so that we can make it stronger to have a happy and healthy winter. Your immune system is your body’s defense system. Whenever any kind Dr. Sherri Ziomek of pathogen, such as a virus, bacteria or such, enters your body, it is the immune system’s job to find, destroy and remove the pathogen. In short, the immune system is designed to keep you free from disease. To understand how this happens, it is important to know that your immune system is divided into two parts: the innate part and the adaptive part. The innate part of your immune system is the part of your immune system that is always there and guarding against infection or disease. It is your first line of defense. The innate response is usually triggered when microbes are identified by receptors. Microbes that successfully enter our bodies will encounter the mechanisms of the innate immune system. The innate immune system will then destroy the invading microbe. This system includes your skin, mucous membranes and even your nervous system to protect your health by blocking or
keeping out pathogens, navigating where to send immune cells and organizing the formation of more immune cells. This system does not give long-lasting immunity against a microbe. Your adaptive immune system is the part of your system that adapts to threats on your health. The adaptive immune system has evolved, so that each pathogen is “remembered” by a signature code. Should a pathogen infect the body more than once, these specific memory cells are used to quickly eliminate it. The adaptive part of your immune system is the reason that you generally will not get the same common cold virus or chickenpox more than once. The functioning of the immune system, like most systems in the body, is dependent on proper nutrition. It has been long known that severe malnutrition leads to immune deficiency. Over nutrition is also associated with diseases such as diabetes and obesity, which are known to affect immune function. Even nervous system malfunctions, such as spinal misalignments, can cause the immune system to not function properly. Specific foods may also affect the immune system. For example, fresh fruits, vegetables and foods rich in certain fatty acids may foster a healthy immune system. Some herbs are believed to stimulate the immune system, such as echinacea, licorice, ginseng, sage, garlic, elderberry and honey. Some of these items cannot be found in our regular diets, so we have to continued on page 46

New Technology Solution for Eyes Over Age 40
Dr. Dylan Reach
Have you noticed that since turning 40, you need to hold reading materials further away in order to see them? You are not alone! Presbyopia is an age-related eye condition that eventually affects everyone over the age of 40 — even those that have never needed vision correction before. Presbyopia is caused by a loss of elasticity within the natural lens of the eye that makes it more difficult for the eye to focus up close. The result is
blurred near vision. Until now, contact lenses for people over 45 required wearers to compromise their distance vision in order to see near. But this doesn’t have to be the case! The Duette Multifocal offers great vision due to new hybrid technology that combines two types of materials into one lens: a rigid gas permeable or “hard” lens center and a soft skirt. The rigid center of the lens uses a proprietary MultiPro² technology that delivers “simultaneous vision,” which allows the eye to easily focus back-and-forth between all distances. The soft skirt around the center provides the all-day comfort of a soft lens. Regardless of whether you have worn contact lenses or
glasses in the past, when you reach a certain age, it becomes more difficult to see clearly at different distances. While Presbyopia affects everyone, there’s no reason to put up with the inconvenience of switching back and forth from glasses to contacts simply to get through your daily life. The unique Duette lens design also offers advantages for those with astigmatism. It’s free from “toric lens rotation,” a common problem associated with soft toric lenses that causes inconsistent vision. Duette optics remain stable, delivering consistently clear vision – blink after blink. If you currently wear hard lenses, you may be settling for less than optimal comfort. Duette eliminates the problem of irritating debris that can collect under conventional rigid lenses. And you won’t experience the annoyance of rigid lenses moving when you blink, or dislodging with your active lifestyle. Contact your eye doctor today to learn more about the revolutionary hybrid contact lens and to find out if simultaneous vision with the Duette contact lens is right for you. Eat, Drink & Be Merry! Most people associate Christmas with food. Whether it’s roast turkey, candy in your stocking or visions of sugar plums dancing in your head, everyone has a favorite Christmas food tradition. So just what do you use to wash down all those delectable bites of cakes, candy and cookies? Do you open a container of eggnog and point guests towards the microwave? Or do you Tiffany Hughes make a little more effort and leave an unforgettable Christmas impression on their taste buds? My husband’s grandmother was famous for her Eggnog Christmas Punch. Chop up ½ gallon of peppermint ice cream in a large bowl. Pour 1 qt. eggnog and 1 qt. club soda over it. Vanilla ice cream & crushed peppermint candies can be used instead. This is the perfect party punch because the melting ice cream tastes great! My family loves me to make this every Christmas morning so we can drink it throughout the day. Apple cider is another beverage that’s great straight out of the container, or even better when it’s doctored up a bit. Pour 2 qts. cider into a slow cooker, then add 2 cups pineapple juice & 2 cups of orange juice. Wrap 3 cinnamon sticks, 1 tsp. whole cloves and 1/2 tsp. crystallized ginger in some cheesecloth and
drop the packet into the liquid. Simmer for at least 30 minutes before serving. Leftovers of this cider are great in pancakes or waffles, or as a basting liquid for turkey or ham. Russian Tea (as my mom used to call it) can be made by combining 2 cups Tang powder, ¾ cup unsweetened instant tea, 1 cup sugar, ½ tsp. cinnamon and ½ tsp. ground cloves. Store in an airtight container, then use 2 tsp. with 1 cup boiling water. This makes a cute gift when given with a Christmas mug. If you need to throw together something quick for everyone to drink, sparkling cider, with a few Craisins, is good (the Craisins maintain the bubbles.) Kid-friendly mimosas can be made with either sparking white grape juice or sparking cider, mixed with orange juice. Add some fresh fruit to each glass for an extra treat. No matter what you serve your guests this season, take the time to enjoy the camaraderie of friends and family as you raise your cups of Christmas cheer. Merry Christmas everyone!

Fall Maintenance This time of year, it is usually uneventful around our house. I don’t have grass to mow, flowers to plant or leaves to rake.
Jeff Glover
This is when you need to walk around your house and see how your home is doing. Poke around the bottom of your garage door, entrance doors and window trim, I like using a car or house key. If they are soft or appear discolored, these could be signs of water damage or even TERMITE damage.
Look at your gutters. Are they overflowing with leaves and debris? If so, take the time to clean them out properly or hire a licensed and insured contractor to clean them for you. Clogged gutters will cause rain water to run underneath shingles and behind soffit and facia boards causing them to rot prematurely and spur some nasty roof leaks. If you have plantings around the perimeter of your home, make sure that they have been trimmed to leave about 18” of distance from your foundation. This will allow air to circulate and prevent mold and mildew from accumulating on your home’s exterior. It will also prevent roots and limbs from infiltrating your home’s exterior treatment and also keep the bugs and other critters away. Lastly, look at your home’s trim and siding. Check to see if the caulking has pulled apart or even fallen out. If so, re-caulk those areas to prevent bugs and air infiltration. Remember, keeping your home sealed

and caulked tightly will save you money on your heating and cooling bills, so be thorough. If your home’s siding is chalky, cracked or even pealing, it is probably time for a paint job. Unfortunately, Georgia’s climate is hard on our home’s exterior, and if it has been more than five years since your home’s last paint job, it is probably time to do it again. However, if your home was built prior to 1978, you need to understand that lead paint is probably prevalent and will need to be tackled by an EPA Certified Renovation Firm. As of the spring of 2011, this will be strongly enforced by the EPA and if you are caught prepping your home by removing paint improperly, the fines will be ugly. The EPA is serious about this issue and they are driving the streets. So, be sure to choose your painting contractor carefully and make sure they are fully insured, certified and licensed. Just because his unmarked van is stacked high with ladders doesn’t make him legit; BE CAREFUL not CARELESS. Also, please remember that cheaper does not mean better especially when you are painting. The time spent cleaning the exterior, removing lose paint, replacing damaged and/or rotten wood, caulking and priming are just as important as the paint itself. Caulking some joints and going spray happy with a paint gun is not a proper paint job. So, get outside, love on your home and keep it in tip top shape and it will keep you safe and dry for years to come. Jeff Glover can be reached at (404) 694-0550. He is the owner of Jeffrey C. What Child is This?

Several studies comparing fraternal and identical twins find that only 20-30% of longevity is genetic. Thus, 70-80% of longevity depends on what we think and the lifestyle choices we make. Certainly nutrition, physical activity and even being fortunate to not become injured with long term after-effects contribute to living a long life. One of the biggest factors is psychological — Attitudes, Beliefs and Coping Skills (the ABCs of Anti-Aging so to speak.)
Examples of attitudes include optimism, gratitude, having a sense of purpose and embracing lifelong learning and change. Examples of beliefs include thinking of oneself as youthful, believing in making new friends all your life and expecting to enjoy living a very long, healthy and happy life. Coping skills include dealing well with change, loss and death, making intimate relationships work and continually renewing one’s purpose. As the Holiday season approaches, several concepts of what is the Reason for the Season will be displayed. Whether your family celebrates, Christmas, Hanukah or Kwanzaa, exchanges presents, or comes together from far and wide, putting the ABCs of Anti Aging into action will ensure short-term survival and make for wonderful longterm memories. While it is true that mistletoe extract has large anti-oxidant properties and eggnog boasts with a vast amount of B-complex vitamins, the medicinal prescription for the season is a global psychological adjustment.
This time, let us let the Spirit of Christmas begin with each of us and carry over into the New Year. As the song states “Let there be peace on Earth, and Let it begin with me.” This season should be the initiation of a re-set psyche, not the culmination of one. The imagery of the personification of the legends of St. Nicholas dates back to the 1800s of an elf with a red jacket and white beard. The attraction to who later became known as Santa Claus, over the centuries, was not to his pom pom hat or even his affinity to reindeer; it was to the deeds that he committed by bringing joy to poor children by throwing gifts through a window. The attraction and thus belief in such a person, who embraced life and confronted change and through a sense of purpose brought aid and joy to others, allowed the legend to continue. We are attracted to his tenacity about which he recruited others to help in his crusade and the obvious personal joy he took from accomplishing his deeds. It’s not the round belly that brings us delight as children and adults, but the hearty laughter that shook it so much and the pleasure exhibited on his face creating those twinkling eyes, merry dimples and rosy cheeks. As adults, we should all look toward the inner child in ourselves. We should allow ourselves to believe in hope and again in something magical. Age, by many centenarians’ accounts, is only a number, but how one feels and believes matters. Allow yourself to dream, even of sugarplums once in a while. The Reason for the Season — It’s Not What you Think! Jesus is the reason for the season. It sounds good, but is it true? That very first Christmas, a man named Joseph was facing the greatest battle of his life. The girl whom he was supposed to marry had turned up pregnant. She swore up and down that she was a virgin and hadn’t been unfaithful to him, but her claim of this “immaculate” conception was problematic at best. J.R. Lee After much deliberation, he was about to break off the marriage plans because he just couldn’t bring himself to believe such an imaginative story. It’s with that thought that Joseph drifted off to sleep. Listen to what happens next… Matthew 1: 20-21: 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Read those verses carefully because the implications are extraordinary, not only for Joseph, but for you and me. Is Jesus the reason for the season? Before answering, let’s remember that God’s worth is not tied up in our celebration in December! He is the all powerful, magnanimous God, who has the name that is above every name. The galaxies are His and everything in
them obey His every command. He is God. He always has been God. He always will be God. Whether we acknowledge this or not, the truth remains the same. With that being said, is Jesus the reason for the season? Before you answer, go ahead and read one more verse. Luke 2: 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. The reason for the season is not Jesus. It’s YOU! Jesus is the focus but YOU are the reason — A Savior has been born TO YOU; He is Christ the Lord! Jesus didn’t come to earth because He was bored. Jesus came to earth to deliver us from our sin. Christmas is for those like you and I that couldn’t get our act together, that couldn’t make it on our own, that consistently fall short every single day. It’s for that reason that Jesus has come. I am the reason for the season. You are the reason for the season. All of your crazy relatives are the reason for the season! We couldn’t get to God so God came to us! That’s good news. For those who feel they can do nothing right, those filled with guilt, shame, and embarrassment over the decisions you have made – God came to you! You are the reason for the season. J. R. My Christmas Wish – A Better Memory As cliché as it sounds, we each truly possess a selective memory. Sure, some things we just don’t recall because we were never listening or actively participating in the first place. But, by and large, we tend to forget things we need to remember, and remember things we need to forget. When we reminisce, we think back to an idyllic time in our lives. We get the warm C.A. Phillips fuzzies, and perhaps embellish the details a little bit. It makes us feel good, we smile or chuckle, and we long for things to get back to how “they once were.” Christmas is a perfect time for reminiscing. Traditions such as decorating the house and tree. Some of our favorite TV shows with terrible animation (Santa Claus is Coming to Town, e.g.). Family around the tree on Christmas morning. Pictures with Santa. Celebrating Christ’s birth, and the joy He brings to us. We remember how we felt as children, and try our best to recapture those moments with our own kids. But, as joyful a time as Christmas tends to be, underneath all the decorations, lights, songs, and frivolity, many people are still hurting. Broken marriages. Jobless. Desperate financially. Struggling and worrying about physical ailments. Missing loved ones. Feeling hopeless, but somehow hanging on. These are the times when memories fail us. We are so deep into whatever
is pulling us into the pit that we don’t recall the things worth celebrating. We forget. Not because we cannot remember, but because we have chosen to instead dwell on our circumstances. Life is going to have its ups and downs. You cannot escape that. So, the only things you have to combat the “down” times are your heart, your mind, and your attitude. In order to overcome the junk the world throws at us, we have to work on improving our ability to recall the victories. God’s victories. If you are a Christ-follower, you should be able to look back on your life and list countless ways that God has come through for you over the years. Landing that job you needed. Getting just the right amount of money at just the right time. Healing a hurt. Providing peace in the midst of disappointment. Overcoming addictions. If we’re honest, our greatest blessings in life are relational – our kids, our parents, faithful friends. Special people that God specifically put in our lives. Taking that idea further, you can also recall great vacations, that first car, a special birthday, or perhaps meeting your mate for the first time. There are sunsets, rainbows, beautiful landscapes, marvelous creatures of the earth and sea. All of these are reminders of God’s greatness and how much He loves you and me. Patrick Lencioni, an author and expert in making organizations the best they can be, once made this statement: “We don’t need to continued on page 46

Little Ways You Might Improve Your Financial Life Continued from page 36
paycheck; you’re going retire on the interest that those accumulated assets earn over time, plus the power of compounding. Investing can also potentially bring you passive income. Consistent investing, this year and in years to come, has the potential to help you improve your financial life. Manage the money you make on your way to financial freedom. It’s amusing: all these Internet gurus tell you they have a method to make you “financially free” or “debt free,” but few tell you how to manage the money you make. Their not-sosubtle message seems to be “succeed and live lavishly” — if you make it financially, you’ve earned the freedom to blow it all on cars, boats and luxuries. This is a classic nouveau riche mistake. If you simply accumulate unmanaged assets, you have money just sitting there open to risk — inflation risk, market risk, even legal risks. Don’t forget taxes — while not technically a “risk,” they are a threat to your money. The greater your wealth, the more long-range potential you have to accomplish some profound things — provided your wealth is directed. If you want to build more wealth this year or in the near future, don’t neglect the risk management strategy that could be instrumental in helping you retain it. Your after-tax return matters even more than your investment return, so risk management should be part of your overall financial picture. Request professional guidance for the wealth you are growing. A good financial advisor will really help to educate you about the principles of wealth building. You can draw on that professional knowledge and guidance this year and for years to come. If they are more than 10 years old, they should be replaced to reduce the possibility of a flood. Neither item carries a big ticket price to replace considering the peace of mind it can bring. Check with your water department today to see if you have a backflow preventer already installed and if not, when they will be installing it. need to be taught more than we already are. We just need more reminders.” If you are not already doing so, you need to read your Bible. Not so you can feel guilty or beat yourself up for mistakes you’ve made. Not so you can just check it off your list. It’s so you can know what God has done since the very beginning. So you can see how He always comes through for His children. So you can read about the miracles He performed when people had lost hope. So, you can remember that He loved you so much that He sent His only son to die and to be raised to life, so you could defeat sin and death, too! Christmas is a perfect time for wishes. Instead of something that can be wrapped and placed under the tree this year, perhaps, like me, you are hoping for something far greater for Christmas: the ability to recall God’s greatness in your life, and the assurance that He’s still in your corner right now.
