Local pharmacist, Dr. Jimi Sharomi, also noted a similar phenomenon from other users. Message from the Mayor Let freedom ring! We are excited to host our annual fireworks extravaganza on Monday, July 4, at Cauble Park! We have always been proud to present one of the largest fireworks shows to take place in the Metro Atlanta area and this year is no different! Live music will begin at 4 p.m., and fireworks starting at 9:30 p.m. Make sure to join us around 7 p.m., to help honor all who have served our country.

Acworth has become home to many popular water activities, such as kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and of course, wakeboarding! This year, we will be hosting the 2016 Nautique WWA U.S. Wakeboard National Championships at Dallas Landing Park during July 27 – 30. This event will feature the nation’s best wakeboarders of all ages as they battle it out on the water for a chance to win the national title! Over the past few years, the City staff has been hard at work placing Acworth on the map as a destination location for the Metro Atlanta area. A few months back, the Acworth Tourism website underwent a complete overhaul in order to include a more detailed listing of the shops, restaurants and attractions that are available to visitors. The City staff also partnered with the chef driven restaurants on Main Street to create a video, appealing to foodies and enticing them to choose one of our own Acworth eateries for their next special occasion.

Let freedom Ring! The City of Acworth and the Acworth Business Association are proud to present one of the largest fireworks extravaganzas in Metro Atlanta. On Monday, July 4, there will be live music and fireworks at Cauble Park. The live music starts at 4 p.m. The Paul Hand Band will take the stage at 5:30 p.m., leading up to headliners “FLASHBACK” at 7 p.m. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Admission to the concert is FREE; however, tables are available for the July 4 concert. Six-foot tables are $50 each for City of Acworth residents and $70 for non-residents. With the table you get six chairs and one parking pass. You can enjoy the table and chairs throughout the day and into the evening. This parking pass will allow you to park at Cauble Park as long as spots remain available. Parking at Cauble Park is by special pass only on July 4, but you are not guaranteed a parking spot at Cauble Park with this pass so please plan on arriving early. If you do not have a parking pass or if the parking is full, you will need to park downtown.

Shuttles will be available FREE of charge throughout the day.

With the exception of the reserved tables, all seating will be general admission, so bring a blanket or comfortable low-back chairs.

Kennesaw’s Salute to America Event The City of Kennesaw will host its annual pre-Independence Day celebration of freedom, music and fireworks on Sunday, July 3, from 6 -10 p.m., in downtown Kennesaw. Admission to the event is FREE. This year’s event will feature two stages of live music, festive street entertainment, food vendors and kid’s activities. The evening will be capped off with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

On the Main Street stage from 7 - 9:30 p.m, The Blast Band, an Atlanta-based party band, will perform tunes spanning from golden oldies to the latest Top 40 songs. From 6 - 7 p.m. on the feature stage in Depot Park, the 80ators will perform one hit wonders and chartbusters from the 1980s. From 7:30 - 9:30 p.m., TUSK – The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute will cover hits from one of the world’s top-selling bands, including “The Chain,” “Landslide,” “Rhiannon,” and “Go Your Own Way.” A six-foot rectangular table located in front of the Depot Stage can be reserved for $75. Each table seats six persons (chairs are included).

With the exception of reserved tables near the Depot Stage, all seating will be general admission, so bring a blanket or comfortable low-back chairs.

In addition to street vendor and sponsor booths, attractions will include free and pay-to-play inflatable amusements and mechanical rides. A wide selection of entrées, cold beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. Attendees may bring picnic baskets or coolers. Grills will not be allowed. Possession or consumption of any alcoholic beverages is not permitted. Kennesaw city parks are “Breathe Easy Zones”; tobacco products, smoking and e-cigarettes are prohibited in Depot Park. Acworth Slide Returns to Dallas Landing

The City of Acworth and Shoreline Entertainment, LLC is proud to announce the return of the World’s Largest Inflatable Water Slide at Dallas Landing Park!

The park is located at 5120 Allatoona Drive, Acworth.

The slide is 36 ft. tall and 175 ft. long. The slide will be open Monday – Friday, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 11 a.m.– 6 p.m., through Labor Day Monday, September 5. Please note there is a $5 parking fee at Dallas Landing for non-city residents.

Boating Safety Class The Acworth Parks and Recreation Department is proud to partner with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 22, to offer Boating Safety Classes to the Acworth community. This one day class will be held on Saturday, July 9, at the Roberts School Community Center from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

This is a NASBLA certified boating safety course and is an entry level class aimed at the inland boater. Old salts will benefit as well since the latest information on Georgia law and Coast Guard policy will be covered. This is a classroom only course and does not include on the water instruction.

Classic Car Cruise On Saturday, July 30, the city will host a Classic Car Cruise in Downtown Acworth. The event will be held from 4 – 9 p.m., on Main Street in Downtown Acworth. The event is FREE to the public. A $2 entry fee is requested for all vehicles in the cruise. All proceeds go to the Horizon Field, an all-inclusive special needs sports facility in Acworth. Acworth Beach Rentals The City of Acworth is excited to partner with Acworth Beach Rentals (ABR) again this summer to offer kayak and stand up paddleboard rentals at Cauble Park! Lake Acworth is the perfect place to relax and spend the day exploring out on the water. Whether you’re with friends, family, or simply need a relaxing day by yourself at the lake, ABR strives to provide you with high quality water sport rentals and friendly service!

Rentals are held beside Acworth Beach and are available to anyone age 13 and older. Rentals will be available on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., and on Sundays, from 12 – 8 p.m., and weekdays by appointment only. Rental times are subject to change depending on weather.

Horizon League: Fall Baseball Registration is currently going on for the Fall Horizon Baseball League.

The Horizon League is a non-competitive baseball league for athletes ages 5 years and older with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. Games will be played on the Horizon Field located at 4000 South Main Street, in Acworth.

The cost of the league is $15 per player. Games begin on Saturday, September 10, through October 15. Adult games will be played on Thursday nights September 8, through October 13. Acworth Football and Cheerleading Registration has now begun!

Acworth Football and Cheerleading Association provides competitive and instructional football and cheerleading opportunities for children between the ages of three and twelve. Children are divided into single age groups and within those age groups are assigned to teams with kids of similar abilities and experience level. They also provide a 3 & 4 year old Tiny-Tot Flag Football that plays in-park. Tackle football starts at age five. Annual Railroad Rendezvous Event

Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival

Follow the tracks to family fun in the sun at the Railroad Rendezvous event hosted by the Southern Museum on Saturday, July 16, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., celebrates the history of railroads and the individuals who worked on them. It features a range of indoor and outdoor activities, including model train layouts, railroad-themed activities, and crafts as well as live music by local bluegrass musicians on the front lawn. Attendees will also have the rare opportunity to climb aboard the General made famous during the Great Locomotive Chase.

Kennesaw Race Series Continues Sports Fanatic 5K – The third 5K in the Kennesaw Grand Prix Series, the Sports Fanatic 5K, will take place on Saturday, July 9, in downtown Kennesaw. The race for adults and children benefits the Dave Krache Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps kids play the sports they love. Same-day registration and packet pickup at Kennesaw First Baptist Church opens at 6:30 a.m.; a one-mile fun run for children starts at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K race beginning at 8 a.m. Runners are encouraged to wear their favorite team’s colors.

Run for Wounded Heroes – The fourth 5K in the Kennesaw Grand Prix Series, the Run for Wounded Heroes 5K, will take place on Saturday, August 6, in downtown Kennesaw. The race for adults and children benefits the Wounded Warrior Project. Same-day registration and packet pickup at Kennesaw First Baptist Church opens at 6:30 a.m; a one-mile fun run for children starts at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K race beginning at 8 a.m.

The professional contest is a Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned and Georgia State Championship event. Cook teams will be judged and scored in four meat categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork butt, and brisket. The $295 entry fee includes a 20’ x 27’ outdoor cooking space, a 20 amp electrical connection and access to potable water.

The backyard contest is an amateur cook-off event. Teams will compete in the same meat categories as above, with the exception of brisket.

The $150 entry fee includes a 20’ x 10’ outdoor cooking space, access to electricity and water. Ancillary events include an “Anything Butt” and peach dessert contest. Each have an entry fee of $30. Kids Compete in Cook-Off Event Children ages 7– 15 will have the chance to display their “grill skills” during a Kids’ Que Cook-off to be held on Friday, August 26, during the Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival. The Cook-off is the second half of a program designed to help children and their families adopt healthy eating habits.

The first half of the program consists of a four-hour workshop focusing on the ABC’s of nutrition, safe steps in food handling, healthy ingredient substitutions, kitchen safety, basic cooking skills, and food preparation.

Workshop activities will also include cooking demonstrations and hands-on practice. Professional chefs and cooking experts will lead the workshop, scheduled on Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive. A parent or adult partner will be required to attend the workshop with their child. Lunch will be prepared by participants.

August “Senior’s Got Groove” Day Trip – On Friday, August 19, we will be taking a group of seniors to visit the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville! The Booth Western Art Museum houses the largest permanent exhibition space for Western art in the United States and is the second largest art museum in Georgia. Additional accolades include being a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate and inclusion in the Museums West consortium. The 120,000 square foot museum allows visitors to see America’s Story through Contemporary Western art, Civil War art, more than 200 Native American artifacts, a Presidential Gallery, and the Sagebrush Ranch. Quality Care Lukas Upper Cervical Health Center Most people are familiar with chiropractic care and many visit chiropractors to alleviate a myriad of conditions. However, many people may not be familiar with a unique form of chiropractic known as Upper Cervical Care.

Upper Cervical Care is an adjusting procedure that corrects the upper position of the top vertebrae of the spine, also known as the atlas and/or axis. If the atlas is even slightly out of alignment, the body can become unbalanced, resulting Dr. Salvatore J. Lukas D.C. in numerous problems including headaches, allergies, sciatica, chronic sinusitis, low back, neck pain, migraines, fibromyalgia, A.D.H.D. and more. When people think of upper cervical, without having been in before, they may think this is only for those suffering with headaches, migraines, and neck issues. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Being that the spine is one unit, correcting the position of the atlas effects the whole spine and full body alignment, which can effect not just the spine but shoulders, hips, legs, ankles and feet. That is why if someone comes in with low back, hip issues or even sciatica and the position of their atlas is corrected, the symptoms start to alleviate. In addition to specializing in correcting the upper cervical spine, other spinal adjustments are administered when necessary in that area of the spine or pelvis.

Another side effect to a misaligned atlas is restriction or distortion of brain messages to organs and limbs throughout the body. This can lead to degeneration of organs, muscles and tissue, which, if allowed to continue over time, can have serious consequences.

By correcting the atlas, the body is better able to overcome or completely eliminate several conditions. This procedure is not a cure, but it does restore body balance and brain-body-communication.

Upper cervical care is practiced by roughly 1500 doctors and chiropractors in the U.S.; fortunately for the residents of Acworth, Lukas Upper Cervical Health Center and Dr. Salvatore Lukas is one of them!

Dr. Lukas graduated from Life University in 2001. He has a Master’s Level Upper Cervical Chiropractic Certification, K.C.U.C.S. (Knee Chest Upper Cervical Specific). He has completed extensive post graduate studies in Clinical Nutrition and Functional Endocrinology.

“I was introduced to Upper Cervical Care in 1998, while attending Life University. I received my first upper cervical adjustment and saw the dramatic results it had on my own health. That’s when I changed my focus of study to Upper Cervical Specific training. Our family, friends and patients have seen tremendous and positive health improvements by using this course of treatment,” said Dr. Lukas.

If you’re new to this treatment, you may be curious as to how it’s performed. Repositioning the atlas is done by hand. There is no twisting of the head and neck. It is a very precise correction that 24

is done from analyzing precision x-rays. Infrared diagnostic testing is used to determine when a specific adjustment is needed or not, states Dr. Lukas. Patients are often “underwhelmed” by the procedure itself but overwhelmed by the results. “Our goal is to get a patient to begin to hold alignments over time to allow their body to heal and become stable, similar to braces with teeth,” he continued.

One of Dr. Lukas’ patients, Alice, had this to say about her treatment.

“I’ve been going to chiropractors since 1976 and even though I experienced some relief in headaches, I never had such a reduction in the frequency and severity as I’ve had since I’ve been seeing Dr. Lukas and getting upper cervical care! I used to get such severe migraines that literally put me out of commission for three days at a time. Not only have my headaches decreased ten fold, but I don’t suffer from lower back pain anymore and I sleep so much better!”

Modern Dentistry, Modern Diagnosis Dentistry has provided some wonderful technological breakthroughs in the diagnosis of dental conditions that include tooth decay. The traditional diagnosis for tooth decay using a pointed instrument has been overshadowed by the use of laser technology. The small handheld device called a “Diagnodent,” which received the “Seal of Acceptance” by the American Dental Association, can detect decay that is not yet visible clinically and would otherwise be undiagnosed by conventional methods alone. This dramatically improves early cavity detection. This new process creates the highest level of diagnostic accuracy for dental decay.

This new science permits a more concise understanding of whether teeth are healthy and can benefit from preventative dental sealants or have active decay that should be treated with fillings. Early detection of decay allows cavities in your teeth to be treated while they are small.

Patient Perspective on Diagnosis The ultimate goal of health sciences is to create a similar diagnosis that can be concluded by multiple doctors. In any branch of health care, patients often can receive differing diagnostic opinions from multiple doctors. As technology advances, science is providing much more accurate and quantifiable diagnostic results that yield less variance for the patient. In dentistry, the Diagnodent laser provides this consistent diagnostic result, so multiple dentists who use this instrument achieve a similar quality diagnosis for their patients. This allows for an objective scientific diagnosis rather than a more personal subjective diagnosis, as in the past.

How Does a Laser Diagnosis Work?

The Diagnodent is a non-invasive technology that allows a dentist to scan the grooves in your teeth. Laser cavity detection is based on the fact that healthy tooth structure reflects light, or “fluoresces,” differently than does decayed tooth structure. Teeth are scanned and the fluorescence readings are converted into a digital number ranging from 0 – 99. The instrument also creates an audible sound when decay is present, and the pitch increases with increasing amounts of decay.

How Do You Benefit from Laser Diagnosis?

Today, it may be more difficult to detect tooth decay because of improved oral hygiene, fluoridated toothpaste and fluoridated water. While fluoride provides the benefit of increasing the hardness of tooth enamel, it also can mask the damaging effects of aggressive bacteria deep in the grooves of the tooth. A tooth groove is often smaller than a single toothbrush bristle, and the bacteria and related acid are not removed by normal brushing.

This can result in a sub-surface cavity forming in the deeper dentin of the tooth, while the enamel tooth surface is still hard and can look normal.

A dentist using conventional methods typically does not diagnose this type of cavity. Similarly, a tooth groove may have slight dark discoloration present and can have active decay spreading deeper below the surface of the tooth and be discounted as stain. Using the modern laser technology, dentists now are able to achieve an extremely high accuracy rate for identifying tooth decay, whether visible or not.

The accompanying photograph shows significant decay under the surface after and it only showed small discoloration in the grooves initially. Use of the Diagnodent translates to earlier detection of decay, more conservative dental procedures and financial savings to the patient.

Home O ffice 101 Home offices are not a new thing these days. It’s hard to beat a 30-second commute, and what better way to create a work schedule that allows for more flexibility to attend to family activities and responsibilities. However, I have been doing this for a long time and working at home does have its down side. Let me guide you in planning wisely and upgrading appropriately, to make your home office an excellent work environment where you will be comfortable as well as motivated.

You may prefer to locate your office away from the rest of home in a dedicated space such as a garage bonus room, basement, or the furniture display room opposite the twice a year used dining room, you know what I am talking about. Parents with young children, however, may need to work in their office while monitoring the kids. Moreover, not all home offices are for at home employment. Some of you may use office spaces for writing, reading, musical composition or spiritual meditation. But, for those of you who will be accepting conference calls, Skype meetings or if there is any chance that you will have visits from clients, colleagues, your boss, vendors, staff, or others, you must pay special attention to the kind of statement your work environment makes.

If your home can accommodate a separate outside entrance, e.g., a walkout basement, make it look and feel like a business. Landscape it and even create a walkway leading to the door. If your visitors will need to traipse through private family spaces to get to your office, you want to project a sense of professionalism, so make sure you pick up the toys or laundry in route to your office. Make sure you have the ability to close off the space for business calls or family functions, by installing glass double doors with curtains or those cool sliding barn doors everybody has to have.. You still need to try to separate work at the office even if it’s in your home.

Make sure your media requirements are met too, so that you have the capability to complete your tasks effectively. A separate business line allows you to use a professional voicemail or answering machine message. It also gives you the option of using call-forwarding if you occasionally work from another location. A designated business line also makes it easier to keep youngsters from intercepting your important business calls. And, at the end of the day, you can leave the business line to the answering machine or voicemail without missing calls from friends and family.

Another common issue with home offices is electrical power. Copiers, laser printers, and computers use a lot of juice. Add a couple of circuits so that you don’t have to worry about tripping the circuit-breaker when you need to make a photocopy.

No matter how well designed your workspace is, you will have to establish basic ground rules for you, your family and even visitors. Acworth Police Department Summer is in full swing in Acworth, and as usual, the city is a flurry of activity. Our beautiful beaches, lake, and parks are filled with visitors every day, and in just a few days we will be celebrating the 4th of July. During this time of year, we also begin preparing for our annual “Covering the Bases� fundraiser to benefit Horizon Field.

For those who may be unfamiliar with it, Horizon Field, located in the Acworth Sports Complex, at the intersection of Main Street and Nance Road, is the only one of its kind in Cobb County. A special rubberized surface makes up the baseball diamond where hundreds of athletes with special needs participate in organized sports every year.

The Special Populations Director for the Acworth Parks and Recreation Department, Lauren Ham, coordinates all of the activities at Horizon Field. She works tirelessly Chief Wayne Dennard to make the field a fun, safe facility for the teams and hundreds of community volunteers who serve as coaches and buddies for the athletes. For more than nine years, the field has been a place where families celebrated victory and heard the roar of the crowds as courageous athletes rounded the bases. Our participants with special needs play in the same complex where their siblings may be enrolled in other leagues. Convenience is one aspect of the strategic plan for the location, but the feeling of acceptance and inclusion is a major factor.

This year, our Covering the Bases fundraiser will be held on September 16, from 6 p.m., until the winner of the midnight kickball tournament receives their champion’s trophy. We will kick off the event with a carnival, followed by a movie on the field, and finally our midnight kickball tournament. As always, there will be raffles, bounce houses, crafts, and many other great family activities, and of course, concessions sponsored by the Public Safety Club at Chattahoochee Technical College.

The Acworth community is known for celebrating family and partnerships. Covering the Bases is an incredible opportunity for families, businesses, community groups, and public safety to come together to partner with and support those who face the daily challenges of raising children with special needs.

Lifting the Fog

by State Rep. Ed Setzler, R – Acworth Americans would be stunned if they truly understood how narrow the concentration of political power is in America. Except for the less than one-percent of Americans who have a deep understanding of the inner workings of the American lawmaking process, what happens in Washington, D.C. and our 50 state capitals is a mystery shrouded in a deep fog. When citizens talk face-to-face to their elected representatives, they often find them surprisingly responsive, in command of the issues, and often in agreement with them on solutions to our most serious problems. Sadly, however, and, all too often, these elected representatives seem powerless to actually do anything about these problems. How can this be? If our Representatives and Senators have lost the ability to influence important issues of public policy, what is an individual citizen to do in a republic that is supposed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people?

If we were to “lift the fog” that obscures our modern political system, we would find that this odd powerlessness comes from the fact that true power in the legislative branch is held not by individual members or even by majority parties, but by the presiding officers who control the legislative process itself. The Speaker of the House and the presiding officers of the Senate, through the powers given to them by legislative rules, have in our day come to dominate all that happens in the legislative branch. Presiding officers’ control over the committee process, committee chairman appointments, legislative debate calendars, and the rules governing floor debate and amendments, have created conditions in which these single legislators, each of whom represent only a tiny fraction of the body politic, exercise breathtaking power over the lawmaking process. Furthermore, once presiding officers are elected by their fellow legislators, the rules are structured in a way that they will often remain in power for as long as their party holds the majority. For example, Speaker Tom Murphy, first elected in 1960, in effect ruled the Georgia House of Representatives for 30 years (1973 – 2003) encompassing the terms of five governors. Similarly, Illinois Speaker Michael Madigan, first elected in 1970, has served as Speaker of the Illinois House for 32 years (1983 – present) and is legendary for his friendly smile and iron fist.

Experience shows us that once a presiding officer takes power, all of the incentives become aligned for legislators, citizens, and lobbyists to pledge their loyalty and carefully avoid any hint of public criticism. Past opponents must immediately become allies or face irrelevance, with one’s potency measured directly by one’s closeness to this narrow locus of power. Violating this complex system of patronage brings anything from exclusion to outright opposition, with particularly harsh judgement visited on the independent-minded within the majority – yes, the majority party.

If one were to study our legal system and evaluate how our laws, constitutions, and legislative rules actually impacted our lives, one would conclude that the significance of legislative rules rivals the overall impact on our lives of our existing constitutions and systems of law. Legislative rules give presiding lawmakers almost singular authority over the very process of creating laws, by appointing committee chairman, choosing the committee to which any bill is assigned, determining if a bill will be given a vote in committee, and if and when a bill will ever be given a chance to be debated on the floor.

Fortunately, it is in the context of this extraordinary concentration of power that new U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has taken important first steps to allow the U.S. House of Representatives to regain its place as the People’s House, rather than the House of Nancy Pelosi or John Boehner. To be able to gain the votes required to become Speaker, Paul Ryan had to open up the legislative process to rank-and-file members and commit to end the tradition of control and political retribution against independent-minded legislators. Although short of enacting the actual Rules changes needed to get the process back in balance, Speaker Ryan has made significant strides within the existing Rules to open up the process and end the highly centralized control that characterizes the legislative bodies of both parties in almost every state Capitol and in Washington. This spirit of reform, coupled with substantial changes to our legislative rules, have the potential to reignite true debate and wrestle representative government back from the grip of powerful special interests that gain influence as power becomes more concentrated.

This vision has nothing to do with being more bipartisan, centrist, conservative, or liberal. Rather, these reforms are really about preserving the absolute right of conscience of our representatives to advocate strongly for their constituents and for the governing principles on which they were elected. If the American political class who has become so dangerously unpopular does not rebalance the legislative playing field back towards the people’s representatives, I fear that the very institutions that set America apart as a shining city on a hill could be shaken to their foundations. Being a republic in name and a political oligarchy in practice – is still in practice, an oligarchy. Generations of war veterans fought and died for a true representative republic – and modern Americans should settle for nothing less.

At almost 81 years young, Randolph Blalock is a proud Acworth native who cannot imagine spending his life anywhere else!

Randolph was born on October 4, 1935 into a family with deep roots in our town – roots that he has happily continued to build in this great city we call home.

As a young boy in Acworth, Randolph attended the Rosenwald School – from 1st grade through the 8th grade. Once he completed 8th grade, Randolph decided it was time to start working. At this time, this was normal – kids either went to Marietta for high school or they entered the workforce. So, he first went to work at Kennestone Hospital, doing different housekeeping jobs. Randolph then worked in construction for many years after school, until 1968, when he went to work for Lockheed in Marietta.

Randolph Blalock hours – and never having to worry about safety. Kids could play all day and parents were able to rest assured that they would come home in one piece. It was a simpler time in this way.

When the kids weren’t outside playing baseball, Randolph and his friends would often spend their days down at Tanyard Creek, near downtown Acworth.

This was the only “body of water” at this time, since this was before Acworth Beach was born! In order to cool off on those hot Georgia summer afternoons, the boys would fill bags with sand in order to create a “dam” so that the water would reach a high enough level for a swim. They always had a great time in their innovative “swimming pool” – truly the best way to beat the heat.

There were also several locally owned grocery stores including Awtrey’s grocery, Casey’s grocery and Mr. Tumlin’s grocery store. Further, Acworth had two furniture stores – Sam Pepper’s shop and Collin’s store. For all your transportation needs, there were two taxis in Acworth. One was owned by Mr. Willie White and the other owned

by Mr. Henry Guess. If you would rather jump of the bus than in a taxi, there was also a Greyhound Bus Stop located on Main Street that took people to and from Marietta.

Other memorable places that were in Acworth during Randolph’s childhood included Allen’s 5 and 10 Cent Store, Mr. Lemon’s car dealership, Dr. McCall’s office and the Acworth Hotel, which was located where Lacey’s Drug is today. There was also the old Acworth Train Depot and down the street from it, there was a bowling alley. This was before the days of automatic bowling, so as a kid, Randolph and his buddies would work at the bowling alley, setting up the pins for people. Acworth would not have been the same without these businesses as key parts of the community!

Considering how great Randolph’s childhood in Acworth was, there was no question that he would raise his own children here as well. From his first marriage, Randolph has 7 children, 4 of which were 2 separate sets of twins! His first set of twins are Geraldine and Howardine (who unfortunately passed away in 2010) and they were actually born on his birthday! The first twins were followed by his daughter Karen, son Randolph Jr. and another set of twins, Melissa and Alisa. Randolph still laughs in disbelief that he managed to have not one, but two sets of twins!

Randolph’s family grew even bigger when, on July 7, 1994, he married his wife of now 22 years, Mrs. China Blalock. China has 2 children of her own, Travis and Corey, but quickly began to love Randolph’s family as her own.

Randolph and China also raised China’s niece, Tamara, together after her mother sadly passed away. The couple never had any children together – but between their combined 9 children, 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and countless other family members who live in Acworth, they have always Randolph & China managed to keep a full house! Ice Ice Baby Summertime is a great time of year, but the intense heat can be a real killer. The easiest way to combat the hot temperatures is to go to the pool, or at least, stay in the shade with a cold beverage. But, the issue is how to keep said beverage from succumbing to the heat before you’re finished with it.

Flavored ice cubes to the rescue! Most drinks can be frozen into ice cubes. Drinking iced tea? Try making ice cubes out of either tea or my favorite choice is lemonade. The same goes for iced coffee. Normally, you’d need to make your coffee stronger (think espresso-strong) to account for the melting of the ice, but if your ice cubes are made from coffee, then problem solved!

Freezing is a great way to prolong your enjoyment of fresh fruits that come into season during the summer. For instance, most berries can be rinsed, then laid separately on a sheet to freeze. Once they’re solid, just store them in a ziptop bag. These make great ice cubes in a variety of drinks, especially adult beverages.

Frozen fruit has other uses too. Berries and bananas make terrific smoothies. Just use the frozen fruit as the icy component, then add your favorite mix-ins. For instance, put two frozen bananas in a blender with either vanilla yogurt or milk, a couple tablespoons peanut butter, add a little honey or agave nectar for sweetness (sugar works too) and blend to make a PB Banana smoothie. Make sure you use enough milk to allow the mixture to move.

Speaking of bananas, if you slice them before freezing and then puree them without adding anything, they will taste just like banana gelato. Just make sure the bananas are ripe when frozen. You can jazz it up by adding some milk, chocolate syrup and mint extract for a banana version of chocolate mint ice cream. If you want to do a healthy version, substitute about ¼ cup cocoa powder, mixed with a tablespoon or two of milk, for the syrup.

Did you know that milk can be frozen too? Not only can it be used to chill down glasses of milk that have become too warm, it can also be used as the creamy component in milkshakes if you’re out of ice cream. Just be sure to add some sweetener.

So, whenever you start feeling flushed from the heat, just head to the freezer and pull out some frozen goodies for your drinks. Then, turn up the 80’s music and find a nice shady spot to enjoy yourself!

4. Lutein and Zeaxanthin Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the macula, along with a third substance, meso-zeaxanthin that must be manufactured in the retina from ingested lutein. Research shows that they can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. You can get both of these nutrients by adding plenty of leafy greens to your diet!

Something for Everyone

As a resident and business owner in the wonderful City of Acworth, I am often reminded of how much our city has grown, prospered, and become a destination of choice for so many families and business. I truly cannot imagine choosing any other southern city to call home.

I remember some of the reasons why we moved here in 1996. Acworth offered new construction that was affordable housing for first time buyers, and had a good reputation for its schools. I remember being teased by my co-workers, knowing that I grew up in the suburbs of Washington D.C., thinking that I was going to go through culture shock.

Well, it really wasn’t culture shock but I do remember attending Pioneer Days on Main Street and how there was only one or two businesses open, and how it truly looked like an old ghost town from an old western movie. The only thing missing was the tumbleweeds being carried by the wind. The closest grocery stores were located on Wade Green Road or Highway 41, and the Ingles was in the old K-Mart shopping center and looked rundown. I remember how I was so excited when Publix first started building their very first store on the corner of Baker Road and Highway 92 in the late 1990s.

Today in our Historic Downtown District, houses are being sold before even hitting the market. Buyers are leaving letters in homeowner mailboxes, notes are being left on front doors, and even being so bold as

to knock on an individual’s door and asking them if they would consider selling their home. These buyers long to be a part of the quality of life in Acworth.

From the Baby Boomers to the Millennials, the City of Acworth offers something unique and desirable for everyone. Perhaps it’s the two lakes that no other city can claim having, including a non-motorized lake which makes kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing perfect! Could it be our wonderful beaches, maintained by our great Parks and Recreation department or our friendly small town feel? Is it the endless green space, parks, playgrounds and walking trails, or our award winning restaurants, quaint shops and boutiques? Can it be that we are one of the top safest cities in the state of Georgia? The answer is yes to all of these!

Nothing makes me smile more when someone says, “I want to be able to walk Main Street and to be close to the lake.”

Because of the high demand for real estate and little available inventory, our historic downtown district is definitely hot! But it’s about to get even hotter. The strategic and dynamic plans recently unveiled by our Mayor and his talented staff have revealed exciting upcoming changes. The new master plan, which maintains the authenticity of our prevalent architecture, concentrates on the expansion of our historic district, adding green space, a new gateway into downtown, a community center, along with playgrounds

and parks. A new pedestrian overpass will allow visitors to cross over the railroad tracks as well. Additional retail, restaurant space, and even the possibility of a new boutique hotel are in the plans. Our famous red caboose will also be a part of a new and educational Depot Park project.

What attracts people to Acworth? Is it our famous annual Easter egg hunt with the sky diving Easter Bunny, Santa’s arrival on Main Street, the lighting of the Menorah, or our celebration of the National Day of Prayer?

Can it be the numerous art and food festivals offering fun filled days for all, or one of the best 4th of July fireworks displays in the county? Perhaps, it’s having the best in the state youth sports programs, and having one of the very first special needs field and playground around the area! The list is indeed endless – all of which makes the quality of life in Acworth hard to beat and even harder to resist!

Sure, we had neighbors.

We saw them out in their yards sometimes and waved as we drove by, but we never really got to know them. I would see small towns in movies and on TV and think “how quaint,” but I never really believed it was true. Neighbors just dropping by to chat over a morning cup of coffee?

Running into friends on Main Street? Surely this idea of life in a small town was just something created

by Hollywood. I was wrong. When we moved to Acworth we immediately felt the warm embrace of our new neighbors and friends. Growing up, I never knew what I was missing not living in a small town.

Now I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Hello Acworth! I want to introduce you to Heather Kenny as she will be making a guest appearance this month in my place. She is the Preschool Director at Freedom Church and does an incredible job leading her team! Here is a blog she wrote recently: I’ve been familiar with the idea of an investment from an early age. My grandfather was known for giving out gold coins or stock certificates for birthdays and Christmas in lieu of traditional gifts. I learned early on what it meant to own a few shares of Ford or Allied Chemical stock. I saw the benefits (those quarterly dividend checks for $18 were HUGE in the eyes of a 12 year old!), and I understood that my grandfather saw value in preparing his grandchildren for future rewards.

It wasn’t until I was an adult, however, that I started to understand what ROI meant. ROI stands for “return on investment.” It’s a business term that is used in many different contexts to help companies determine whether it’s “worth” putting time, energy, effort, or resources toward a specific goal. The higher the return, the better the investment.

The bottom line? What you put in directly influences what you get back out.

What does this mean in the context of leadership? It means you must be willing to invest in your team if you desire above-average results.

I lead an extraordinary team of volunteers. I only see these volunteers one day a week, not daily in an office setting. If I only text a volunteer once a month to determine their availability for the next month, I can expect a minimal return on that investment. That volunteer is not likely to become the most passionate, most loyal team member – because my level of investment in them has been very small.

Think about it – if I choose to go purchase 1/100 of a share of Google stock for $7.04, I can’t expect to become a millionaire from that investment! But if I invest more – let’s say I purchase 100 shares – I can expect a higher return.

Now suppose I identify a team member that I don’t know very well, and I ask them to lunch or coffee. I let them know that I simply want to get to know them, and learn about them as an individual. And a few days later, I send them a hand-written note to thank them for taking time out of their busy schedule to come meet with me. Will I see a difference in that person’s level of commitment and buy-in? Most likely, yes!

Are you frustrated with the level of commitment or excellence from your team? Let me ask you this: What are you willing to invest in your team?

Or maybe the first question should be: What results do I want to see from my team?

Take an honest look at how you are investing in your team. Are you expecting a huge payout from a minimal contribution? It’s time to stop holding your team responsible for their outcomes, and start holding yourself responsible for how you’ve invested in them.

Investing in people will give you a return greater than you can ever imagine.
