Message From The Mayor In the city of Acworth, Quality of Life has been a mission for our city’s team. When folks ask me about Quality of Life, they generally will ask what it means — I love to be asked this question! Here's what I say: Quality of Life is why folks want to live in a community. The way we measure Quality of Life in Acworth, is by the quality of our education, church, and parks and recreation opportunities, as well as public safety and city services. Measuring the Quality of Life is important because these are the reasons that folks want to live in an "AllAmerica City." We became the fastest growing city in Cobb County because of our Quality of Life. Our city leaders have learned that Quality of Life creates economic growth and development. We have built a community in which folks want to raise their families and numerous retailers throughout the country have moved to Acworth. We believe that Quality of Life is our most important economic incentive. Let me give you a great example — remember Parks and Recreation is measurement for quality of life. Over the past 10 years, we have created a Parks and Recreation program that not only implements the best youth sports programs in North Georgia, but our staff has created and managed outstanding events that have brought hundreds of thousands of people to our city. We have many businesses that have located to our city because they came through, participated in, and were part of, the many successful events that the Parks and Recreation staff managed. This is economic development that happened because of our city's dedication to building Quality of Life. — Mayor Tommy Allegood

Which Of These Neuropathy Symptoms Do You Suffer from? If You Suffer From A Single One Of These Torturous Symptoms – Numbness, Tingling, Or Sharp Nerve Pain – THEN THE FACTS BELOW MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT YOU HAVE EVER READ IN YOUR LIFE Neuropathy affects every part of your life -walking, sitting, and even sleeping. Maybe you’ve had multiple tests, only to find out no one has any idea what you have. Maybe you’ve even been put on a drug with heavy side effects.

Do you have any of the following symptoms... • • • • •

Pins and needles feeling Numbness in the hands or feet Tingling or burning sensations Weakness in the arms or legs Sharp shooting or burning pains

If so you may have a condition called peripheral neuropathy.

My name is Dr. Amy Valente, and I’ve been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for years. More than 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body’s ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions.

By using gentle techniques, I’m able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away. Listen to what some of our patients have to say about it: “Low back pain and leg numbness was what originally brought me to the office. Before my care here, I wasn’t able to hold my son for longer than a minute, but now I can hold him and play with him more often. I can walk with no problems or assistance and my wife is especially happy that I can spend time with the family. The atmosphere has really added to the experience because the staff helped me to get better through their care and friendliness.!” Thanks-John Ratledge “Pain and numbness on my left side originally brought me into the office. Now that I am receiving care I have the ability to feel hot and cold in my left hand which I could not do before. I have decreased pain and increased feeling on my left side. What amazed me the most about chiropractic care is feeling more improvements than through medications.” Thanks again, Shannon Dillard How To Find Out If This Will Work For You

Dr. Amy Valente

or symptoms… (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. • You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. The appointment will not take long at all. And you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. Here’s What To Do Now The offer is only good until June 15th. Call today 678-574-5678 and we can get you scheduled for your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening. Our office is located at 3451 Cobb Pkwy Suite 4. Acworth, GA 30101 (on the corner of Mars Hill and 41). When you call, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Neuropathy Evaluation so she can get you on the schedule and make sure you receive proper credit for this special offer. Sincerely, Amy Valente, D.C..

Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy?

It’s time for you to find out if chiropractic will be your neuropathy solution.

Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’ Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors.

For 14 days only, $20 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $250 for!

Why suffer with years of misery?

What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive:

That’s no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem.

Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone.

• An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case.

Don’t live in pain when we may have the solution you’ve been looking for all along.

The Single Most Important Solution To Your Neuropathy

• A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain

Wheeler High School: Class of ‘74 Does It Again In May of 1974, like most high schools, Wheeler was having their senior class graduation. The ceremony was located on the high school football field to accommodate students, faculty and guests. Half way through the ceremony, “a huge storm hit the area dumping rain, creating huge winds causing all to escape with their lives to a drier area,” Kathryn Wiley, a then graduating senior that day, recalls. “The graduation was ruined.” Todd Nixon, also from the graduating class, decided that he would like to correct the wrong created by the weather...38 years later! So, Wheeler is accepting back the students and faculty to have the graduation that wasn’t. Rain or shine, all alumni from Wheeler’s class of ’74 are welcome to be part of the re-graduation on June 2, at 6 p.m. in the Wheeler HS auditorium. For more information, visit the Wheeler Re-Graduation page on Facebook or contact Todd Nixon at (678) 492-6732. 16

Boarding, Daycare, Training and More! With your summer vacation right around the corner, there are a lot of details to work out. There are hotels to book, rental car or airline tickets to purchase as well as suitcases to pack. And if you’re leaving town and not planning on bringing your four-legged family member, it is also the time of year to be thinking about who will care for him/her. While you are enjoying your summer get-away, shouldn’t they be having a fun time too? There are many options to contemplate when deciding about your dog’s care while you are gone. You could board your companion at a local veterinary office where most of his time will be spent in a small kennel and a lack of supervision at night. You could leave him alone at home and have a pet sitter check in a few times a day, there are a lot of hours spent alone, and when dogs get bored, they can be anxious and destructive. The best option would be to bring him to an enrichment facility that focuses on your canine’s well being 24 hours a day, with plenty of stimulation, love and round the clock care. That place is Pet Play Place, where fittingly, their motto is, “You Leave ‘Em, We Love ‘Em.” Pet Play Place offers complete dog care from boarding (affectionately named “sleepovers”) to doggie daycare to comprehensive training. Pet Play Place is a premier pet care facility serving the Acworth/Kennesaw community since opening its doors in 2006, and it has successfully created an environment for dogs that has become their vacation destination and one they look forward to visiting. If you’ve ever taken your dog to another kennel, you will immediately notice the difference Pet Play Place has brought to the industry.

“Pet of the Day”– (See your pets name and picture in lights!) Pet Play Place recognizes its “Pet of the Day” each and every day of the week (Monday – Friday). The “Pet of the Day” is displayed with his/her picture and name on our digital billboard which is located directly in front of Pike Nurseries on Cobb Parkway in Acworth for the entire day! “This is a fun and unique way to thank our customers for providing us with the opportunity to care for their pets, while also sharing their dogs’ beautiful faces with the Acworth community for all to see. Our customers have enjoyed the recognition and some have even brought their dogs out to the billboard to see for themselves. It has been a lot of fun,” stated Pet Play Place owner Susan Godfrey. (see this months “Pets of the Day” on page 31)

Sleepovers “Pet Play Place Pajama Party”

Boarding your dog can be stressful on everyone and can be especially difficult for your dog who is use to a certain routine and comfort at home. Pet Play Place is truly a unique pet care facility. At Pet Play Place, Sleepovers are filled with plenty of time to play and exercise both inside and outside, including lots of human and other animal friend interaction. Pet Play Place is an “open - play” facility, which means the guests are continually participating in a bounty of free play in a supervised, safe and open environment; they are not confined to dog runs for their exercise and play time as is the case with most boarding facilities. Adding to the unique boarding experience for your dog are services such as doggy massages, swim time, hot dog “yappy” hour, afternoon biscuits, night-night story time and doggy ice cream. Honestly, your dog may never want to leave. Each animal guest is given a temperament evaluation prior to becoming a member at Pet Play Place. This ensures the safety not only for your dog, but others as well. Other safety precautions include having a staff member on premises 24/7. “Whether it’s 3 o’clock in the afternoon or 3 o’clock in the morning, there is always someone here with your pet,” noted Facility Director, Mark Graziano. “We have our professional staff overseeing the facility every minute of every day. Our team is here on site Paid Advertising

loving on your pet every day of the year. It doesn’t matter if it is a normal busy Wednesday afternoon or Christmas morning, we are going to be here with your pet.” Acworth resident Linda Price brings her dachshund, Gunner, to Pet Play Place. “In addition to the Open Play environment, I have a special respect for the Pet Care Providers. My Gunner visits Pet Play Place regularly and I know that he is given a lot of individual time with the staff. It makes going on vacation easier when I know he is not sitting alone in a cage.”

you will be greeted by your happy, well-trained and family-ready dog. The board and train program also includes follow up lessons and, best of all, is fully guaranteed.

Expanded “Play Areas”

In order to provide our guests plenty of room to run and play, Pet Play Place has recently expanded both their indoor and outdoor play areas. “Due to the trust and loyalty the community has placed on us in caring for their dogs, we needed to expand” – stated Mark Graziano. “We have added 5,000sf of indoor play area as well as another 5,000sf of outdoor play area, of which the majority is grass. We are excited to provide this additional space for our guests”.

Community Involvement

Doggie Daycare

Pet Play Place also provides doggie daycare in a caring, innovative and safe environment. Doggie Daycare is very organized and scheduled. Once your pet is initially registered and temperament tested, the check in process is easy and quick, and your dog is free to participate in “Open Play” with his “friends.” Playtime includes balls, wading pools, bubbles and lots of human interaction. There is even a mandatory quiet or “nap” time, just like in child daycares, where the staff will sit on the ground, signaling the dogs it’s time to rest. The schedule changes daily, mixing it up for the guests. Whatever your dog enjoys doing, he’ll be able to do it, make new friends and return to you happy. Krista Torpey has been bringing her dog, Darby, to Pet Play Place since 2007. Darby is a whirlwind of energy who needs the playtime and socialization that Pet Play Place delivers. “I feel totally safe leaving Darby here,” noted Krista. “She comes home exhausted and happy,” she continued.

Training

Being part of the community is very important to Pet Play Place, which is why they provide the local “Be a Tree” child dog safety program in this area. The program, which is primarily for Pre-K through fifth grade, instructs children on how to avoid dog bites. “We offer this program for free to all local schools as part of our continuing community outreach,” mentioned Mark.

Franchising Opportunities

Pet Play Place is excited to provide franchising opportunities as well. “As a result of significant interest in the Pet Play Place business model, we are accepting franchise applications,” noted Robert Godfrey – owner of Pet Play Place. “We hope to expand into not only Cobb and Cherokee Counties, but Metro Atlanta as well,” he continued. If you are interested in Pet Play Place franchising opportunities, please email info@petplayplace.com or call (770) 919-8738 and ask for Robert or Mark. The summer is just around the corner, and now is the perfect time to visit Pet Play Place for your boarding, training and doggie daycare needs. You may contact the facility and see for yourself the difference that makes Pet Play Place the ONLY premier facility for your dog’s needs.

Recently, the Acworth Police Department (APD) held their 12th annual Citizens Police Academy (CPA) class. The CPA class is designed to educate citizens of Acworth about their police department. The 13 week training consists of both classroom and practical application courses. Some of the training consisted of visiting the 911 Dispatch Center and the morgue, touring the jail, court procedures, law, vehicle stops, crime scenes, use of force continuum, taser and firearm safety, ethics, radar, laser, K-9, drug & DUI enforcement, special investigations and firearms training at the shooting range.

The Solo 401(k) A Retirement Savings Vehicle Designed For The Smallest Business

Don Akridge, MBA, CPA, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ U.S. Marine Corps Veteran – Emory University Alumnus

The solo 401(k), or solo (k) as it is sometimes called, allows a selfemployed individual to set up a 401(k) plan combined with a profitsharing plan. You can set up one of these if you work for yourself or own a small business with just 1-2 full time employees, including yourself (the second FTE must be your spouse.) You & your business can save for the future at the same time. Imagine nearly tripling your retirement savings potential. With a solo 401(k), that is a possibility. Here is how it works:

• As an employee, you can defer up to $17,000 of your compensation into a solo 401(k) in 2012. • As an employer, you can have your business make a taxdeductible contribution of up to 25% of your compensation to the plan in 2012. • Total employer and employee contributions to a solo 401(k) are capped at $50,000 this year; if you are 50 or older, in which case you can also make a $5,500 employee catch-up contribution. The dollar-figure contribution limits stated above are subject to annual COLAs, of course. If you aren’t incorporated or are simply a sole proprietor, the 25% annual employer contribution limit is slightly reduced.

How Can I Make My Ads More Effective? Over the 13 plus years that I owned and operated a direct mail community magazine, one of the most frequent questions I heard from advertisers was, “Why am I not getting responses to my ad?” As I pondered this question over the years, I have reached a conclusion which has become very clear to me. Put simply, most ads do not have the three key ingredients necessary for an ad to be effective and generate desired results. Assuming that your ads are targeted at the proper audience, these keys are: Don Kyle

1. Is there a headline (or other attention-getter) that will cause prospects (your audience — readers, viewers, listeners, web visitors, etc.) to look at (or listen to) your ad? 2. Is there a compelling message for your prospects? 3. Is there a call to action or an offer in your ad? If you do not have an attention grabbing headline or image, your prospects will not bother to look at your ad, regardless of how great your product or service may be. This is probably the most important factor as you want your prospects to look at what you are offering. Keep in mind that people are most attracted to people and animals (animate objects) rather than “things.” This can definitely help attract prospects to your ads. If your message is not compelling, why would prospects look any further to your offer or call to action? Finally, if you do not ask prospects to take action, they will not. Be sure to emphasize how prospects can contact you (and of course, where you’re located.)

If you are 50 or older and self-employed, you could potentially put as much as $55,500 into a solo 401(k) in 2012. Now add your spouse to the mix. Is he or she age 50 or older and a full-time employee of your business? Then the two of you could contribute up to $110,000 to the plan this year.

Business owners are very good at what they do within their business; however, this talent normally does not carry over to ad design. Therefore, it makes sense to take advantage of those who do, by example, the resources at the advertising medium you choose.

You can skip contributions in a lean year. Employer and employee contributions to a solo 401(k) are wholly discretionary. You determine how much goes in (or doesn’t) each year.

Ads utilized by competitors in your field, preferably in markets other than your own, are another great resource in designing your ads. I have seen many clever and effective ads over the years in other locales. However you decide to design your ad, make sure you address the three key factors stated above. Remember, the goal of your ad is to cause your prospects to take action and contact you.

You can create a Roth solo (k). The Roth version of a solo 401(k) is just like any other Roth account: you contribute after-tax dollars in exchange for tax-free growth and eventual tax-free withdrawal. If you don’t want to go Roth, you can simply have a traditional solo 401(k) with pre-tax dollars going in, tax-deferred growth and eventual taxed withdrawals. continued on page 54 36

Acworth Police Department Planting The Right Seed When I study and compare our crime rates here in Acworth, I realize how great it is to be in a community that is safe. We really do have it pretty easy here. Knock on wood; our citizens go through the day without the fear of coming home to find their home burglarized or worse, becoming a victim of some of crime against their person. A few months ago, I went on a ride along with one of our sergeants. I had not been in the patrol car more than fifteen minutes when a call came out regarding a crime in progress. The sergeant and I were close and intercepted the vehicle of the perpetrators who were fleeing the scene. We initiated a traffic stop and before you know it, there was a foot chase. A long story short, we finally had two young men in custody. Later that afternoon, I watched as detectives interviewed these young men. I found myself wondering how these two, who have just reached adulthood, could find themselves in these circumstances. The situation was senseless. What they did to find themselves in an interview room was senseless and their lives will forever be affected. Truth known, almost every time I see our youth in these situations, there is a common theme and the same question runs through my mind. Where is the investment? Where are the parents? Now don’t get me wrong, I have seen kids in trouble and it seems that the parents have done everything right, but for some reason the kid just seems to keep making the worst choices. Unfortunately, most of the time I find myself looking back at the home. I recently read an article in which the author was making an analogy in the terms of reaping what you sow. “Years ago, Chinese farmers decided they would eat the big potatoes and use the small ones for seed. Eventually, nature reduced all their potatoes to the size of marbles! Those farmers learned through bitter experience that they could not keep the best things of life for themselves and use the leftovers for seed. The harvest would reflect the planting.” Parenting is a lot like planting potatoes. You can’t hold back. As the Chinese farmers realized in their planting, we must be willing to put our best back into the ground so that what we reap will be a product of the best. Planting the right seed in our children which includes, time (a lot), discipline (a lot), sacrifice (a lot), wise counsel (a lot) and reward (a lot), sure does increase the chances of getting a child raised up without meeting the police on negative terms. I wonder if the “a lots” equal something pretty close to love? — Chief Wayne Dennard 38

APD Receives Tommy Nobis Award The Acworth Police Department is honored and proud to announce that they were awarded two prestigious awards on Wednesday, April 25, during the Tommy Nobis Galaxy of Stars luncheon, held at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta. The Nobis Works organization was founded by former Atlanta Falcon great Tommy Nobis and serves businesses throughout Metro Atlanta and 16 states. Nobis Works helps individuals with all types of disabilities to enter or return to employment and to enjoy productive and independent lifestyles while contributing to the greater business community. Since 1977, the organization has helped more than 22,000 individuals find dignity and workplace success. The police department was originally nominated in the Volunteer Advocacy category, one of seven categories of awards, which honor both individuals and groups who participate in helping people with disabilities. The police department was extremely honored and excited to win the Luminary Award for Volunteer Advocacy for their work with “Covering the Bases,” a 24 hour event in its fifth year now. The event was created to raise money and awareness for the “Horizon Field” at the Acworth Sports Complex. The field is specially designed to allow those with disabilities to participate in sports activities, such as baseball and kickball. The winners of all seven categories at the Galaxy of Stars luncheon were then judged for the top award — the “Governor’s Award.” Once again, the Acworth Police Department was selected for this award and was proud to accept on behalf of all those individuals who have assisted in “Covering the Bases” over the years. The Acworth Police Department would like to say thank you to all of those who have come out and supported the “Covering the Bases” event, as well as the Horizon League, over the past four years and would also like to invite anyone interested to join them at this year’s event, being held September 14 — 15.

Plantar Fasciitis And Chiropractic?

Dr. Sherri Ziomek

As the warmer weather has set in, more people have been inclined to travel outdoors and become active. However, some people have had trouble with their feet adjusting to this increase in activity. These people have experienced a painful sensation on the arch of their foot or in their heel, usually worse first thing in the morning and getting better once they take a few steps. The pain may come and go throughout the day. So what's

causing this? It is called Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar Fasciitis is inflammation of the connective tissue that travels on the bottom of your foot from your heel to your forefoot. It can also be known as a heel spur, although they're not necessarily the same. The plantar fascia is a very thick band of tissue that covers the bones on the bottom of the foot. It extends from the heel to the bones of the ball of the foot and acts like a rubber band to create tension, which maintains the arch of the foot. If the band is long, it allows the arch of the foot to be low, which is most commonly known as having a flat foot. This fascia can become inflamed and painful in some people, making walking more difficult. Our tendency is to locate the source of pain and then rub it, poke it, heat it up, cool it down, inject it or cut it out. While any of these may be effective, they are treating the end result

and not the source of the problem. The most common cause of Plantar Fasciitis is a subluxation (mis-alignment) of the joints in the lower half of your body. Although the source of the misalignment may be in your foot, it is significantly more common for this to be occurring in the low back or pelvis. When your low back or pelvis becomes subluxated, it alters your gait (walking or running pattern.) This causes 2 things: leg-length differences leading to muscle-length differences. This leads to excessive pull on the plantar fascia due to the altered mechanics. One leg becomes longer, there is reduced dorsiflexion (bringing foot up towards shin) in the leg, the achilles tendon becomes tight and the arch of the foot begins flattening — this creates increased distance between the forefoot and heel and increased tension on the plantar fascia. If this added tension on the fascia is not lessened, the body begins to change the soft tissue of the fascia into stronger tissue — more bone. This is called a heel spur. A heel spur develops on the front of the heel bone because this is where the fascia inserts and is its weakest link. A heel spur cannot be removed except by surgery, so it is imperative to receive proper treatment at the onset of symptoms to prevent spur formation. A few suggestions to try before it gets to this point are getting adjusted and stretching. If your pelvis or low back is out of alignment or you're putting increased stress on the foot, you may not have proper nerve supply to the muscles of the foot and leg and your walking/running biomechanics can be off. continued on page 54

Organizing & Purging 101 — Part 1

Jeff Glover

I have been getting asked lately about storage solutions and what I have done in my home to gain more space. You can never have enough storage, right? How about changing your mindset to I have too much stuff for the storage space I have. Do you really need 20 types of Tupperware, broken bikes, the boxes of baby clothes, endless kitchen gadgets, books, magazines and so on?

My exception to this is preparedness storage, which is different, and I will address that separately. You get my point. Maybe you have enough storage and it just needs to be organized better. In my home, I throw things out and my bride keeps it. In her defense, she has gotten much better and I have been more sympathetic to her hoarding — I mean keep-saking. As an example, our kids baby clothes are now down to one box and she has thought of making a memory quilt using those clothes — a great idea. Unless you are saving baby items to be used within six months by someone else, they will be out of style and not wanted. I am a big proponent of garage and yard sales. If you don’t need the stuff, I can assure you someone does. I have sold stuff at yard sales that I would never have thought someone would

need, and even laughed as I set the item out in the yard. Sure enough, I get that one person who pulls up to our sale and says, “I have been looking for one of these for months. I cannot believe I found it.” Go figure. My wife and I like going room by room and pulling out everything, putting it in the middle of the floor. I then like to decide the areas that are available for storage and build a storage system that will hold what I have, which will give me the flexibility for new items that may need a home in the future. This seems kind of obvious I know, but when you step back and see everything strewn all over the floor, you gain a whole new perspective on all your stuff. As you start deciding what to keep and what to throw out, be RUTHLESS!! If you haven’t used it, fixed it, worn it, read it, played with it or even knew you still owned it, THROW IT OUT!! Ironically, you will probably discover areas where you have been wasting money. Like finding six partial bottles of shampoo, half used toothpaste, body lotions, clothing duplicates and so on. However, I can hear some of you thinking, well I need to keep (fill in the blank) in case of an emergency though. Fair enough, but the boxes of books, baby clothes and whatever else won’t be as important as say, a three month supply of dried beans or pasta if there is a food or storm emergency. Then there are grandma’s antiques. Just because they were important in the continued on page 54

Adam And Eventually With the desire to live longer, the goal of true anti-aging is to prevent certain diseases of aging and keep the body younger. Many entities within the field of medicine all started with the notion that there are some outcomes that cannot be changed because they were never preventable to begin with. Associations of lung cancer with cigarettes and hepatic diseases with Dr. Nedra Dodds excessive alcohol consumption brought the notion of Preventative Medicine more into the forefront. Every day, the field of medicine makes further strides toward the associations of cardiac disease, Alzheimer’s and certain cancers. Diseases that primarily affect women, namely cancers of the cervix, ovaries and breasts, have been and are still elusive to have distinct associations and what is labeled as preventative care for these arenas are mediocre at best, as there does not exist true prevention, but early detections of an existing disease. It will truly be a great day when a public labeling of particular foods, toxins or lifestyle indulgences get a Warning: If you are a woman this may be hazardous to your health. Even when people have a genetic predisposition for certain

diseases, the true goal is in the prevention, even at the point of knowledge, and not just the cure. Prevention of diseases, such as breast cancer, starts with the dissemination of information so that people recognize they have choices. The fact that even in the age of information, facts are poorly circulated and patient’s choices have been edited. Challenging a system that will always be dynamic, such as the practice of medicine, is a patient’s right. Arming oneself with knowledge is power and there is always strength in numbers. In the area of breast cancer detection, patients should be made aware of the advances in newer and safer screening examinations and the increasing research between the association with vitamin deficiencies and the development of tumors of the breast. Also, gaining ground is the ability to manipulate a woman’s hormones, who is genetically predisposed for breast cancer to decrease her risk of developing the disease. A growing belief within the field of anti-aging is that inflammation is at the root cause of many illnesses and diseases, and its prevention and treatment with natural supplements along with significant dietary changes is still key. We can look to history and find comfort and confidence in science and the practice of medicine. Still labeled as the continued on page 54

The Eyes Look, The Brain Sees Our eyes take in the sights around us, but it is our brains that actually see. Visual and auditory processing involve recognizing and interpreting information taken in through the senses of sight and sound. Although there are many types of perception, the two most common areas of difficulty involved with a learning disability are visual perception and auditory perception. In fact, 80% of Dr. Julie Poteet what we perceive is from the visual system. Since so much information in the classroom and at home is presented visually and/or verbally, the child with a visual or auditory perceptual disorder can be at a disadvantage. A visual processing or perceptual disorder is different from problems involving sight or sharpness of vision. In fact, many people with a visual processing disorder do not even need glasses, but they seek out vision exams in hopes that simply prescribing glasses will rectify their problems with reading and processing the world around them. Visual processing disorders can be treated and it is always best to identify the problem as early as possible. It is often said by educators that children are learning to read up until third grade, and thereafter they are reading to learn. Visual processing disorders will hinder a

Pint-Sized Chefs

Tiffany Hughes

We have pictures of me as a little kid, standing in my grandmother’s kitchen, covered head to toe in flour and grinning from ear to ear. Some of my fondest memories of her are in that kitchen. I was a picky eater as a kid, but I always loved to cook, thanks to her. So when my own son came along, I made sure to instill the same love of cooking in him that I got from my grandmother.

Exposing children to meal preparation at an early age will broaden their taste buds, while teaching them that cooking is fun. Kids will be more willing to eat something they have been involved in preparing. Pizza is a great kid-friendly dish to make. You can use premade crusts (such as Boboli,) or even buy pre-made pizza dough (such as Pillsbury Thin Crust Pizza dough.) My son and I have made everything from regular old pepperoni and cheese to cheese-steak pizza to veggie pizza. To make the veggie pizza, we simply roll out the dough onto our pan and bake it at 400° for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Let the crust cool while the veggies are prepared.

Cook your favorite veggies in a little olive oil, just until tender. Add salt, then spread approximately 3 tbs. ranch dressing over the crust, top with the veggies and either shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese. Return the pizza to the oven just long enough for the cheese to melt. Cheese-steak pizza can be made by substituting ½ pound thinly sliced roast beef and 6 slices of Monterey Jack for the veggies and mozzarella. Baked potatoes are another great dinner option which really gets my son’s creative juices flowing. We top them with salt and pepper (or in his case, a generous dose of Old Bay,) cooked broccoli and cheddar cheese, sliced leftover steak and horseradish cream sauce, or shrimp and parmesan cheese. The possibilities are endless. Make sure to rub the skins with olive oil and sea salt when wrapping them in tin foil before baking so they will be tasty to eat. Remember, the more kids are involved in meal planning and preparation, the sooner they realize there’s more to eating than chicken nuggets. So be adventurous and enjoy the kitchen time with your kids! Happy cooking! Tiffany Hughes is an Acworth resident who enjoys spending time with her family and furbabies. All Things New Life is challenging and we are not going to make it through unscathed. We will face various addictions, relational challenges, financial strain, career difficulties, sickness, complications, trouble and the list could go on and on. What most people long for is a fresh start or a new beginning. Let me challenge you to desire something more. I don’t want you to be limited to J. R. Lee experiencing a new beginning or a fresh start. I want you to experience the fact that God can make all things new in your life! Let me explain. Jesus promised to prepare a place for those who love Him just before He left this earth a few thousand years ago. This is what He said… Revelation 21:4-6 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Have you been abused, abandoned or betrayed? Have you suffered or wept? Jesus tells us that He will wipe away the tears from our eyes. Not only that, He will remove the reason for our pain! That means no more cancer, financial struggle, addictions, divorce or even dieting! That’s good news but it gets even better…

5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making

everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy & true.” The good news? God has never made a promise that was too good to be true! He always keeps His word. Even when it doesn’t feel possible — God will ultimately prevail. It’s not just a promise for the “spiritually elite.” It is a promise for you and me. 6 He said to me: “It is done.

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.” I remember coming home from baseball conditioning my freshman year of High School. I was so thirsty that I grabbed the first thing I saw when I opened the refrigerator — a gallon of milk. After guzzling it straight out of the jug for a few moments, I noticed something was wrong. The milk was spoiled to the point that it more closely resembled cottage cheese. What I thought would quench my thirst just left me disgusted. (I still will not drink milk to this day.) Isn’t that how life is? We are thirsty for something that will satisfy us and we are willing to try just about anything (pills, beverage, relationship, success, financial gain,) but nothing seems to work. Want to know why? The only thing that will satisfy your thirst long-term is Jesus. Only He can give you what you are really looking for. Only He can make all things new! continued on page 55

They were so helpful in working with us to have the right advertising tools that helped us grow from a few participants to our team of participants and staff. We hear almost daily, “I saw your ad in Around Acworth,” so thank you Around Acworth for your magazine and for being there for us; helping us to grow and to thrive while we become a member of the community. — Debbie King, Owner

Laugh It Up!

C. A. Phillips

This year is the 20 year reunion for the graduating class of my high school. I don’t talk about it too much, but I've been bitter since Senior Superlatives day, when I was the runner — up in the vote for "Wittiest" student among my peers. What did they know? I have always felt like I was robbed. There's no question I was the wittiest! Ironically, I was a distant 438th in the vote for "Mr. Humility."

That same year, at our Senior Class dinner/party, I did receive a pretty distinguished and unique honor: I was awarded the “Most Likely Not to Receive an Award” Award. Seriously. And, guess who presented that certificate to me: the girl who is now Mrs. C. A. Phillips! Who’s laughing now?!!??! Bwaaaahahahaaaaaaa…

site’s analysis of my responses: Your wacky sense of humor rocks! It appears that you can laugh at just about anything, including yourself — which is way cool! And hey, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at right? Just kidding. Of course you know you have to make sure you're not offending anyone right?! In any case, most people probably get a kick out of your wit and most likely love hanging out with you. We think you're pretty funny too! Why does all this matter? Well, scientific studies have proven that laughing people are more creative and more productive, and hence are better teammates in a work environment. Further, it has been shown that laughter can add up to eight years to someone's life! So, I’m really 30 in “laughter years!” Here are some additional benefits of laughter, as posted by Lonnette Harrell on helium.com:

But, all maniacal laughter aside, I have always believed that my sense of humor — even at inopportune times — is an asset that has been genuinely beneficial over the course of my 38 plus years. And, I just confirmed that notion, as I took a "humor selftest" online at www.queendom.com.

• Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones, and increases good hormones like endorphins, which act as natural painkillers

I scored a 60. In real life, that is a failing grade. But, on the sense of humor scale, I am up there with Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, and people who voted for Obama. Here’s the web

• Hearty laughter exercises the diaphragm, the abdominals, and stimulates the heart

• Laughter strengthens the immune system, leading to less sickness

the total account balance (whichever is smaller.) In certain cases, hardship withdrawals are permitted prior to age 59 ½. If you have money in a SEP, an IRA or an old 401(k) somewhere, those assets may be rolled over into a solo 401(k). There are some demerits to the solo 401(k). As you are setting up and administering a 401(k) plan for your business, you have to see that it stays current with ERISA and IRC regulations. Obviously, it is much easier to oversee a solo 401(k) plan than a 401(k) program for a company with 15 or 20 FTEs, but you still have some plan administration on your plate. You may not want that, and if so, a solo 401(k) may have less merit than a SEP or traditional profit-sharing plan. The plan administration duties are relatively light, however. If the assets in your solo (k) exceed $250,000, you will need to file Form 5500-EZ annually with the IRS. If they don’t, no such annual filing is necessary. What if you hire more employees? If that occurs, your solo 401(k) will be redefined under the IRC as two plans: a standard 401(k) plan and a profit-sharing plan. This makes retirement plan administration more complicated. One other detail worth mentioning: the passage of EGTRRA made solo (k)s much more attractive for small business owners. Prior to EGTRRA, the contributions had to count toward the maximum profit-sharing contribution for the business, which was typically 15%. If the Bush-era cuts really do sunset in 2013, their expiration could theoretically affect solo 401(k)s. On the whole, solo 401(k)s give Small Business Owners increased retirement savings potential. If that is what you need, then take a good look at this option. These plans are very easy to create, their annual contribution limits far surpass those of IRAs and stand-alone 401(k)s, and some custodians for solo 401(k)s even give you “checkbook control” – they let you serve as trustee for your plan and permit you to invest the funds across a variety of different asset classes. Secondly, stretch the Achilles tendon. Do this by putting your foot in a toe up position against a wall or cabinet then leaning forward until you feel a stretch in your calf. Alternate with your leg straight and with your knee bent — this works both muscles in the calf. Good Luck and Be Well. Dr. Sherri Ziomek graduated as Valedictorian from Life University. Greatest Killer, Smallpox was documented as early as 10, 000 BC and was responsible for an estimated 300 — 500 million deaths alone during the 20th century. After a successful vaccination campaign throughout the 19th and 20th century in 1979, the World Health Organization certified its eradication, and to date, remains the only infectious disease to have been eradicated. • One researcher found that it took ten minutes on a rowing machine to reach the heart rate produced by one minute of enthusiastic laughter • Studies by UM Medical Center in Baltimore found that laughter may prevent heart disease, and also lowers blood pressure So, how do you think you’d do on a sense of humor test? Take a minute to take the 10-question exam and see where you stand. You can find it here: http://www.queendom.com/jff_access/ the_sense_of_humor_test.htm. If your score is above 50, then congrats! If you are hovering in the 30s or 40s, then you may need to go roll a neighbor’s yard, inhale some helium and talk like a Munchkin, or rent the Naked Gun or Airplane! movies tonight.
