The Basics of Craft Beer: A Beginner’s Cheat Sheet By Laura M. LaVoie You can’t turn a corner without coming face to face with craft beer. In 2014 it was estimated that there were already over 3000 craft breweries in the United States. We can only imagine how that number has jumped in the last 8 months. If you’re a beginner, the craft beer scene can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Beer is an exploration and you’re not obligated to love everything, especially the first time. Here are some things to get you started.

Basic Styles There are almost limitless styles when it comes to craft beer. It can be hard to keep up with the newest trends if you aren’t even familiar with the old ones. However, there are many reliable beer styles you can try. • Stouts and Porters: Almost every brewer is going to try their hand at one of these dark beer styles. They are made with dark malts and have very little bitterness in general. • Browns, Ambers, and Reds: While these are all distinct styles, they play well together. They are also not usually bitter but usually lighter in body than a stout or a porter. • Wheats: If you’re looking for something light and refreshing a wheat beer is a good choice. Often they are brewed with, or served with, citrus fruit making them a great summertime sipper. • Pale Ales and IPAs: These are very popular but not typically recommended for novice beer drinkers. Why? It’s all about the hops. Pale ales and IPAs tend to be very bitter and until you develop the taste for them they won’t be your go-to style. • Lagers: Of course, you can always stick with crisp lagers. Most mass-produced beers are this style, but you can find great examples with much more flavor from your local craft breweries.

Basic Beer Terms • Hops: A flower used for flavoring, aroma, and preservation. This is what gives beer the bitter flavor. There are multiple varieties of hops. • Malt: All beer is made with malt, or toasted grains. The type of grain and how long it has been roasted will influence the flavor of the beer. • Session: This is a term for a beer that the brewer considers very drinkable. They’re usually lower in alcohol and meant for all day enjoyment. • Growler: A big trend now is selling beer in gallon or half-gallon containers to go. You can get these at breweries or specific bars designed to fill growlers.

The best part about learning to enjoy beer is drinking it. Don’t be afraid to ask your bartender for samples and start learning what you like about different flavors. Enjoy the process and drink responsibly.

Fill’Er Up! Growler Refilling Spots in the Tri-State Area A growler is a glass, ceramic or stainless steel jug used to transport draft beer in the United States and Canada. They are commonly sold at breweries and brewpubs as a means to sell take-out craft beer. The exploding growth of craft breweries has led to an emerging market for the sale of collectible growlers. Growlers are generally made of glass and have either a screw-on cap or a hinged porcelain gasket cap, which can maintain freshness for a week or more. A properly sealed growler will hold carbonation indefinately and store beer like any other sanitized bottle. While 64 U.S. fl. oz. is the most popular growler size, growlers are commonly found in 32 U.S. fl. oz. (sometimes known as a “howler” or “half-growler”). The two most popular colors are amber or clear. The term likely dates back to the 19th century when fresh beer was carried from the local pub to one’s home by means of a small galvanized pail. It is claimed the sound that the CO2 made when it escaped the lid as the beer sloshed around sounded like a growl. Growlers can be refilled for between $5 and $30 in the U.S. Local growler filling stations are listed below. By John McDonnell

If you’ve ever had a hankering to say “Arr” at the start of every sentence, address everyone as “Matey”, and use words like “avast” and “bilge rat”, you’ll love International Talk Like A Pirate Day (or ITLAPD for short), which is on September 19. Started in 1995 by two American guys named Mark Summers and John Baur (now known as Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket), it has grown into an international phenomenon. ITLAPD received a big boost when humor columnist Dave Barry wrote about it in 2002, and since then it has gotten bigger every year. This year Krispy Kreme doughnuts will again be offering a free glazed doughnut to everyone who comes to their stores on September 19 and uses pirate slang. If you go the extra mile and show up in pirate attire, you’ll get a free dozen glazed doughnuts (don’t worry, you don’t have to have a real parrot on your shoulder -- Krispy Kreme distributes cardboard parrot cutouts that you can use instead). The Pirate Guys, Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket have quite a busy calendar these days with public appearances around ITLAPD. They have a website at http://www.talklikeapirate.com/, which has all sorts of fun games, news, and activities around the pirate theme. It’s enlightening to see the map of ITLAPD events this year, and realize that there’s at least one on every continent. There are books, t-shirts -- even an official International Talk Like A Pirate Day song! There be a lot of booty involved with bein’ a pirate, it seems!
