A HERITAGE IN FRAGRANCE FROM CRAYONS TO CANDLES At just sixteen, Michael Kittredgge II made a candle for his mom’s Christmas present using his childhood crayons and an antique stove. This was the start of a tiny but fast-growing business called Yankee Candle. By following his inspiration and always stressing quality, he made Yankee the candle industry standard and reshaped the modern giftware landscape. He sold Yankee Candle in 1998, and although Michael (Mick) Kittredge III was young at the time, he very much recalls growing up and learning in his father’s world of wax and wicks.
BRINGING IDEA TO MARKET Mick was eighteen in 2008 when he made his first candle on the same stove purely for fun. In 2009, he made scented candles the theme of a collegiate marketing course that required him to create and promote a product. His choice seemed natural: candles. He discussed an idea that would not go away with his dad; asking advice. “Could this school assignment be the seed of a new company?” The answer was yes, and in late 2009, Mick started the Kringle Candle Company with a new concept - making all white candles no matter the fragrance to match any décor. A suitable building in cozy Bernardston, Massachusetts was purchased for manufacturing and would also include a retail store (opened Oct. 2010) to showcase Kringle’s candle line.
TODAY AND TOMORROW Growing and growing…Since 2010, Kringle’s retail campus expanded across the street with the opening of The Farm Table Restaurant housed in a carefully restored and renovated farmhouse built c.1800 where patrons enjoy a high-quality dining experience, a stunning post-and-beam three-level Kringle Country Barn offering a delightful old-time country store with unique gifts, toys and holiday décor, the tiny but bountiful Chocolate Cottage with sweet treats and the seasonal Kringle Café with an outdoor seating area adjacent to a courtyard and outdoor fireplace. Kringle’s corporate headquarters and production also moved to a new location within Bernardston. With the success of its first five years, expansion plans continue in order to meet the national consumer demand, wholesale needs and international growth. The excitement is definately evident within the company’s framework as it moves forward to 2016 and beyond. Mick says, “I’m very proud of our ultra-fragrant candle line.
