Drawing & Illustration

Drawing the human form was my first introduction in the field of design. Free hand drawing is an essential skill required in every discipline of design. Understanding proportions and the basic construction of the human body helped me explore the form in different actions and poses, which was very useful through the design process of various projects.
4
5
6
7
As part of our free hand drawing course we were introduced to still life drawing. This helped me understand how to draw accurate proportions and perspectives.
8
I chose to create an illustration based on a gothic-grunge theme. This composition is made in water color using color pencils to create depth.
10
An illustration of a chimpanzee in a comic form.
11
Human figure drawing has helped me understand the structure of the human body and study its various postures. However, I chose to explore the form further, through caricature. A caricature is a portrait with intentionally exaggerated features, but must sustain the characteristics of the person. I created a caricature of my family member using color pencils.

HIM As a part of my illustration course I chose to explore the field of digital illustrations. Being a Bollywood fan, I decided to recreate my favorite Bollywood action heroes using adobe illustrator. This helped me experiment with various tools of the software and gave me the confidence to achieve realistic results.
A manual provides details through visuals to illustrate a procedure. I created a manual in watercolor, to show how a car tyre is changed. The part that required most attention was the transition between each frame, as it is important for the viewer to comprehend the entire process. To create a successful manual I first broke down the process in order of importance. This helped me depict the steps through still images. I implemented my watercolor skills to achieve successful communication.
14
A comic strip is a short story through a series of visuals. The story is based around the main character, which develops the story. To gain a deeper insight on designing comic strips I chose to create a character first. I used an Egyptian mummy and portrayed it in different expressions. This helped in developing the character and his personality and resulted in the comic strip shown above.
Color
17
Colors play a vital role in all our lives, and we often take them for granted. I did too, until I further explored this area. By placing squares of one size and color on larger squares of different colors, I was able to comprehend its effect one another. Such as, in this exercise the same shade of grey appears different when placed on different backgrounds.
18
Along with understanding color and its effects, I explored its response on different materials. This is a composition, in acrylic done on cotton fabric as a t-shirt design for Design Connect festival.
19
Colors are broken into various categories, one of them are Color Themes. I have explored colors in categories of ‘Bright - Dull’ and ‘Deep - Pale’ to further study the contrasts.
20
21
After the stage of experimenting, it came down to applying the color effectively. For this I chose a book cover design and recreated it in different color themes using poster paints. This not only helped me understand colors that work well together, but also gave me the opportunity to compare the final result of the covers and see which color scheme complemented the composition.
22
23
There are a range of materials and mediums that can be used, but it is essential that the thought is clearly portrayed. The main aim of this exercise was to visually represent ‘Angels vs Demons’. I chose to use watercolors and color pencils to depict the disparity of character.
24
Learning to create a balanced composition is essential. By incorporating elements that represent her character with an appropriate color scheme, I was able to create a composition to portray my perception of a friend’s personality. Done in poster color.
Basic Graphic Design
27
A form is a close contour that is defined by its perimeter and Space is a term that describes the arrangement of objects on the plane. Using the same object as a form and then space helped me understand how the context of the object determines whether it is a form or a space.
28
God is the greatest artist To whom no one can compare, Streaking sunsets very beautiful, Painting rainbows in the air Brushing green the hillside scene, Blotting blue the sky above, Splashing flowers ‘cross the ground beneath, Shading white clouds with his glove
To explore the subject of visual expression I chose to depict my interpretation of a poem using paper mache and acrylic. The poem discusses all the elements that god has created and how it adds up to our beautiful world. I used the tree to symbolize god who gives us life.
29
A form is an area that defines objects in space. Being an essential element, in basic design, I have explored 2 dimensional forms in relation to positive and negative space. I have defined positive space using black ink and have explored form generation using 3 geometric forms. By adding negative space to the geometric form I have achieved the creation of a new form.
30
Balance s one of the principles of design that helps sustain visual equilibrium. To design a successful composition it is essential to achieve balance. As one of my explorations, I created 2 compositions using basic forms. The first composition has no balance of symmetry, resulting in discomfort and the viewer being unable to focus on the entire design. On the contrary, the second composition is balanced, hence allowing the viewer to absorb the visual without any disturbance.
31
This is a study of a teapot sketched and rendered in pencils.
32
After studying the teapot, I created the texture of a rock on it’s a surface using color pencils.
33
This process played a vital role in creating the final teapot with the pebbled texture. The purpose of this procedure was to simplify the initial drawing, and resulted in achieving the essence of the light and shade in its simplest form.
34
This exercise was extremely beneficial as it taught me how to capture the character of any form or composition by reducing the complexity. It was also helpful in the process of logo design.
Typography
Typography plays a vital role in various areas of design, from the typeface used in a logo, to the body text in a brochure, it makes a huge impact on the audience. Before beginning to make decisions on choosing appropriate type, it as very important to understand the development and structure of a basic font. Here are some alphabets that I constructed, to understand the role of the weight, height and other elements in any type. I used black ink to fill the forms that I constructed on white choksi board.
38
This was an experiment to study a chosen alphabet in a variety of fonts. This helped me see how the same form changes with different typefaces.
Corporate Identity
41
The term identity defines person’s individual qualities, just as the term corporate identity describes the personality of a company. As designers we were introduced to corporate identities as a means of standing out. Our aim was to achieve clear communication and representation of our business through our designs. To get an accurate understanding of a successful corporate identity and how it is achieved, we were challenged with creating our own corporate identity. Based on an existing firm, ‘Monsanto’ I redesigned a corporate identity with fictitious name. The logo I has designed to portray the company is shown above.

In this project I designed the logo for Patanjali, an Ayurveda medicine selling company. As it is related to Ayurveda I used the concept of ‘Panchbhuta’. This term defines the five elements of life; Earth, Water , Fire, Air and Ether that are symbolised by five colors. In my logo I symbolised the concept through colors; orange for earth, blue for water, red for fire, green for air and yellow as ether.

A visiting card is a representation of an individual in relation to their life or career. To explore options of layouts I drew some samples by hand. The bottom four cards were finalized and using the computer I create them as an improved version of my initial layouts.
56
Pamphlet is a less expensive means of promotion. I chose to advertise a new dish in the menu of the poplar fast food joint, Mc Donald’s. Through this process I learnt how to prioritize my information. In this case I chose to focus on the introduction of a new product.
57
A leaflet can be of many shapes and layouts, usually through a single sheet of paper. My aim was to effectively use one page to create an interesting format. I chose to advertise the ‘Tigers Eye Stone’. With the use of a number of folds, I tried to utilize maximum space by appropriate placement.

Bharatanatyam
Communation through Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam, a Classical South Indian dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu. It is an art form that was nurtured in the temples and received the patronage of the royal courts for centuries. Broken up into three syllables, ‘bha’, ‘ra’, ‘ta’, it refers to three important aspects of the form: bhava (mood), rasa (sentiment), and tala (rhythm or cadence). This is the manifestation of the ancient idea of the celebration of the eternal universe through the celebration of the beauty of the material body.
Besides being a cultural tradition, this art form plays a vital role as a means of communication. Through it various elements the dancer is able to connect directly with its audience during the performance.

A typical Bharatanatyam performance
Jewellery in Bharatanatyam
A bharatanatyam performance today would comprise of a combination of pieces emphasizing nritta (abstract dance) and/or nritya (narrative or expressive dance using enactment or abhinaya). This dance form is distinguished by a strong basic position, ardhamandala, with feet and knees turned out in a plie position. The spine is held erect, and movement is initiated from the central area between the solar plexus and the navel. Hand gestures, called mudras, are used to emphasize the basic lines. They are also the means through which a dancer ‘speaks’ as the
mudras constitute a language code in abhinaya or narrative dance. The dance usually has devotional love as its theme. The dancer plays the part of a woman devotee awaiting an erotic union with the god, her beloved. The dancer is either dressed in a sari worn in the Tamil style or cut and sewn as loose trousers withlong pleats attached in front. In keeping with tradition, the dancers wear bridal jewellery, as the devdasis were supposed to ‘brides of god.’ Originally, a dance meant to be performed solo by a woman, it is now also performed by men and by groups of dancers.
The dancers wear a unique set of jewelry known as “Temple Jewelry” during the performance. These include an important element called “ ghungroo”. Ghungroo’s are basically bells worn on the ankle and are used to help the dancer contribute to the music in rhythm with the steps. From the ancient texts and sculptures, one can see that the original costume did not cover most of the dancers’ bodies.

Music in Bharatanatyam Along with the dance, the performance is strengthened through its music, usually in the Carnatic style of South India.Mostly, South Indian instruments are used in the ensemble. These include, the Mridangam (drum), Nagaswaram (long pipe horn made from a black wood), the flute, violin and veena (stringed instrument traditionally associated with
The medieval times, with the puritanistic drive, caused the devadasis to wear a special, heavy saree that severely restricted the dance movements. There are several varieties of Bharata Natyam costumes, some of which do not restrict the dancer’s movements, while the others do. The modern costumes are deeply symbolic, as their purpose is to project the dancer’s sukshma sharira in the material world.
Head, neck and eye movements Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of the arts and learning).Tamil, Telugu and Kannada are the traditional languages used during the Bharatanatyam preformance.
One of the techniques that play a vital role in communication is the EYE MOVEMENT. While Natya Shastra contains the largest number of the movements, and the most detailed descriptions, Abhinaya Darpanam, for instance, has defined only 9 head movements, 4 neck movement and 8 eye movements (compared with 36 of Natya Shastra) which are used extensively throughout the dance.
Angikam - This is a devotional song on Lord Shiva and an item dance in Bharatnatyam. It can also be performed in byapti slow motion.
Head Movements (Shiro bhedas): Sama,Udhvahita, Adhomukha, Alolita,Dhutam, Kampitam, Paravruttam, Utkshiptam and Parivahitam. Neck Movements (Griva bhedas): Sundari, Tirashchina, Parivartita, Prakampita Eye Movements (Drishti bhedas): Sama, Alolita, Sachi, Pralokita, Nimilite, Ullokita, Anuvritta, Avalokita [who looks down].

A brochure is different to other forms of publication. It is closer to a small booklet, as it holds the place for detailed information and visuals. My brochure is based on Bharatnatyam, a famous dance form of India. This brochure contains detailed information of Bharatnatyam, its history and how it is performed.
The Performer
60
“NATYA” – the form of story telling A professional Bharatanatyam dancer must demonstrate a number of qualities. As Sangitaratnakara puts it, the true dance is connected to the beauty of the body. “Patra Prana Dasha Smrutaha” which translates to the ten essentials of a Bharatnatyam dancer. These include, “Javaha” meaning Agility, “Sthirathvam”, Steadiness, “Rekha” which is grace,“Bhramari” which means balance in pirouettes, “Drishti”, that is glance, “Shramaha”, hard work, “Medha” that is intelligence, “Shraddha” is devotion, “Vacho” which means good speech and “Geetam”, the ability to sing. Abhinayadarpanam, one of the two most authoritative texts on Bharatanatyam states that a professional danseuse (patra),must possess certain qualities to perform the dance. She has to be youthful, slender, beautiful, with large eyes, with well-rounded breasts, self-confident, witty, pleasing, well aware of when to dance and when to stop, able to follow the flow of songs and music, and to dance to the time (thalam), with splendid costumes, and of a happy disposition.
Communicating Through Bharatnatyam 7
Bharatanatyam is known as the “Form of Story Telling’, where the performer is usually a soloist accompanied by a minimum of two musicians and four for a full-scale concert. The dancer uses the space as her own sacred temple and brings the audience into her magical circle as she performs and acts out stories with Gods and Goddesses from Indian mythology, folk tales and stories with emotional content. Being a living art form it has continued to enrichen itself changing with the times yet keeping its pristine beauty and nature intact. Linear geometrical patterns, a perfect balance of the body, eloquents of expression, and precision of footwork to intricate mathematical rhythms are the hallmarks of this dance.

A magazine cover and layout may contain a range of information. As part of my publication design course, I redesigned ‘Pitch Magazine’. Above I have shown the cover and cover story page that I designed.
62
To understand the layout in a magazine, I used the format of an existent magazine and replaced the images and information. This helped me grasp the importance of text and visual placements.

I designed mastheads for fictitious newspapers to recognize the importance of the type, size and placements.
64
A newspaper is a daily issued publication that includes news, advertisements, announcements, opinions and other information. It is a local means of public awareness and is common worldwide. I designed the business section of a newspaper to explore effective layouts for a particular audience.
65
66
As part of our publication design course, I designed a menu for a fictitious restaurant. The ideas were developed upon a decided cuisine. I chose to explore Indian street foods and create an eclectic menu of the very popular ‘Chaat’ found through our country. This assignment gave me the true feel of taking into consideration the target audience, the location of the restaurants and other factors through the design process.
67
The concept of chaat originated in Uttar Pradesh and has now become famous throughout the country. It is still however closely related to the typical ‘Desi theme’ of bold contrast color schemes. To depict the essence of Indian street food I used the famous Indian truck art as it is commonly seen at chaat stalls.
68
Besides the menu cover I drew elements seen though truck art using acrylic to create the true ambience of eating at a street stall.
Advertising
72
To truly grasp the concept of persuasion, we were given the chance to utilize our advertising skills to the fullest. By convincing people to buy a product that would generally seem useless in that particular situation, would result in a successful advertisement. The task at hand was to design a campaign to promote a refrigerator in an arctic climate even though one would not expect a refrigerator to have high sales in such temperatures. By understanding the target audience and their requirements, I focused on the benefits they would gain. This is the logo I designed for the Oasis Fridge. I have also used it in the magazine advertisement and leaflet that I designed to promote the product.
73
Here are some designs of a transport box, dangler and hoarding to promote the concept.
74
75
For my latest assignment, I chose to create an advertising campaign to promote a water park. To explore new ideas, I developed the concept of a water park with an artificial wave pool to introduce surfing. In the logo I focused on the unique surfing feature by using a wave and surfer in the symbol, that I designed on Adobe Illustrator.
76
I designed a series of teaser advertisements to promote the water park.
77
78
To follow the teasers I designed a newspaper advertisement as a mode of communicating details. Through this I aimed to provide further information of the park and its activites.
79
Here are smy designs of car stickers, hoardings and a website to promote the concept.
80
81
I designed a newspaper advertisement to raise awareness and promote education for the girl child. This advertisement showed me a different perspective, as the target audience was very vast it was important to achieve clear and effective communication.
82
The second newspaper advertisement was for the ministry of social welfare. This was to raise awareness against female feticide.
Poster Design
85
This is a poster that I made on choksi board using poster paints and color pencils. I designed a composition using the photographs from the movie ‘Action Replay’ to design this promotional poster.
86
I designed posters and invitations to promote a concert by Shubha Mudghal. This helped me take the course of poster designing to the next level by designing posters using computer softwares.
87
I designed a poster as a solution to a common problem seen in our college. My aim was to remind people to switch off the mobile phones during classes.
88
We travelled to Shikhawati, Rajasthan, to explore photography at new destinations. I designed posters using my photographs to promote tourism.
Interaction Design
For additional exposure in the field of design I interned with ‘East Village Interactives Comapany’ I designed the graphics and icons for the audio visual conference software. This gave me a chance to experiment further with screen dimensions. I learnt to work with pixels, the smallest element in a display device. This helped my designs provide more accurate representation.
93
Website designing encompasses a number of steps and procedures. Through my course of web development and designing, I was exposed to the various techniques of creating a successful website. To explore this experience further I first designed a wire frame, which I eventually developed into a website. I was able to understand the importance of hierarchy of information, fonts and colors that are suitable for the target audience.
94
Computer Application
97
To explore the various tools and techniques of computer softwares we were given an assignment to manipulate photographs and create a vintage effect. Using Adobe Photoshop I was able to experiment resulting with the photographs shown above.
After experimenting with the softwares I was able to apply these techniques to design more effective advertisements.
