01 TINY HOUSE Tiny house evokes a concern for maximum space usage. Developed as a 3600 rotating house, its functions revolve around a central stationary slab. The inner shell has a spatial rotating function, independent from the outer structure, which works like a rolling ball. By breaking the prevalent norms of user accessing different parts of the house, tiny house moulds/rotates itself to provide different spaces to a central slab to minimise the user movement. Thus making it a perfect house for a lazy man!

WTF !! how can machine be a house for living ???!

F

circadian

Observation-1 At a time, one room is accessible rendering other spaces irrelevant. Solution: In order to avoid wastage of space we conďŹ ne all the functions into one space.

Observation-2 Walls provide security but the volume they occupy is quite large. Solution: Keeping the circulation area same we decrease the volume occupied by separation walls.

arpit malhotra_student community hub

02 STUDENT COMMUNITY HUB Student Community Hub is the centre for student entrepreneurs who want to explore their practical ďŹ eld. They can rent spaces and work after the college hours. The main aim of the design was to develop a relationship between students and the built form so that the buildings become part of their actions. Volumes and massing are planned in a way that they encourage activities. The built form is gradually sunken to bring it to the student’s scale.

architecture potfolio_9

site plan

The complex accommodates a guest house, restaurant and some office spaces. Each built form contributes to build specific values in the student life just like Robert Peter says, “Design creates culture. Culture shapes values and values determine our future.”

my form creates a sense of transition between office and guesthouse.

I got inspired from cubism art but our cladding materials are the same.

N-S orientation to maximise the energy efficiency of the buildings

I am circular and sunken but we both have greenery in common.

100% reuse of landsoil by providing gradients in the site

same but different -- each block has its own individuality but they also create a dialouge with other builtforms

UNIT MODULE 1|2

All the units are divided in 2 levels internally and there is a central open to sky corridor which connects to the residents.

UNIT MODULE 3|4

streets are the nodes for human interaction so guest house is planned like a neighbourhood. All the units are connected through this street thus it has potential for student activities. It would encourage them to interact and collborate which would ultimately help them to grow as a community

The aim was to create an informal environment for the workspaces which could boost productivity among students.A total of six start ups can work simultaneously and each is assigned a seperate cabin which can expand to accommodate more people when required.

TYPE 2

To make students independent and conďŹ dent about their decision making skills the design is left to them. All furniture is made with modular approach which can move easily and thus students can create their own spaces.

Restaurant forms a connect, creating another informal space bridging the workspaces and the residential units. To encourage discussions, the furniture layout is decided strategically. The overpowering roof profile gives a dynamic view of the sky providing feeling of relaxation but at the same time the sense of movement.

[G] [LIVE] market study no of farmers 20 market age 2 years

Design 180 was our proposal for the weekly organic farmers market in Chandigarh. The competition brief required a portable kiosk module for farmers to display their products. We proposed a standard cube of 450 mm with one opaque surface.

avg earning of farmer ~58$/₹4000

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION FEELINGS

cost of hiring display tables 7.2-8$/₹500-550

problems identified high cost for hiring furniture

no sitting furniture

Modules can be arranged in any way,for any kind of product. The basic cube can be used by the user according to his choice so it personalizes each kiosk with no boundations in design.

same size table for all scale of farmers no identity of market

design study module manufacturing cost 2.8$/₹200 module hiring cost (proposed) .07$/₹4 (3%) expected life span >3 years avg display stand cost .5$/₹34

problems identified during execution without demonstration farmers hesitate to use modular design due to cheaper rate they prefer buying modules rather than hiring them

The team focused on designing affordable and sustainable structures for those who cannot hire architects. Scope of work included providing design soultions, alternate building materials for construction and the required technological assistance. Mrs Swaran, a small scale worker, was our first client, for whom a residence proposal is in process.

NEW BOUNDARIES

The idea was to encourage involvement of the community in building and creating awareness about upcycling. The architectural interventions using upcycled waste materials involve the users in the design process. 3D models, descriptive sketches and on-site models were generated to understand their issues and create a product that actually solves those.
