A concept store in which different spaces are splited between two floors devoted entirely to the lifestyle: a gourmet shop that sells products of the french Hediard, an area dedicated to clothing, accessories, cosmetics and jewelery for men, another for women’s fashion; a corner with a careful selection of books and CD’s, and place for some great fragancies in which I highlight the label L’Artisan Parfumeur. There’s also a Café lounge, an ideal place for a brunch on Sundays, or to have breakfast, a light meal, tea or wine and cheese tasting, everyday, inside or on the terrace. Truly cool!

Alternative is the word that characterizes this shopping center. Stores with uncommon products blend with art exhibitions in one single space. Who crosses the Miguel Bombarda Street in Porto, is used to seeing art galleries, a feature of the street. Anyone entering the building number 285 can find a number of stores that sell, among other products, design clothing, vinyl, vintage furniture, bonsai, a restaurant and a large garden. The idea was to create a shopping center that would not be just another “shopping center. It is a charismatic shopping area, very far from the aggressive selling concepts where those who enter have to buy. Another area that revitalizes downtown Porto.

Who said that the traditional shopping is disappearing? More traditional than ‘A Vida Portuguesa‘ (Portuguese Life) is not easy to find, however, it has just opened a new shop selling old Portuguese items in a remarkably traditional downtown location. Catarina Portas is the person behind this unique project, charming and appealling for all visitors, that now becomes a cool must go in Porto. The first floor of an old fabric store placed at the intersection of Rua das Carmelitas and Rua Galeria de Paris, is now filled with beautiful portuguese products, well-known for decades, even with the original packaging or based on those beautiful patterns, images and forms from the past that are now so cool. On the top of a long staircase, a large open space appears to us standing out old 20 meter shelves and long wooden tables where the products are showned in a perfect setting, just arriving from the past that still leaves a mark in the present generations.

For those addicted to tea, here’s a suggestion of a mustgo spot: Rota do Chá...

...at Rua Miguel Bombarda, down the hall at the entrance of the former ‘Artes em Partes’ building. For the ambience, for the decoration, but especially for the dozens of great teas that we may try, there’s always a desire to come back soon. While the tea is, of course, the main reason for going there, we can also enjoy some great scones, ‘quiches’ and homemade cakes to go with a cup of tea. The space is decorated with oriental motives, creating a very Zen atmosphere: we enter by a room with Indian decor, nested tables and comfortable seats, a door ahead leads us to an outdoor chill out style garden with Moroccan influences; down the garden there’s a store with oriental objects, colourful clothes and accessories, exotic furniture. On the 1st floor goes a restaurant, in a room also decorated with oriental elements and strong colours, where we can enjoy a buffet lunch during the week, and also themed dinners in the the week-end (Friday and Saturday); there’s also a tea-store. A cool spot where the city virtually disapear…and the conversation flows, with no rush.

The old doors colored like marmalade, freshing and appealing. The restored old furniture right at the lobby that send us back to the past and where we can find, like in old times, the traditional ‘pãode-ló’ (sponge cake) in those mythical octagonal boxes or just to eat a slice, marmalade, jellies, teas, biscuits, chocolates Avianense. Since its opening in 1993, this gallery has focused its activity around three complementary objectives: to promote and support projects for new Portuguese artists; to obtain a better understanding of names within international art and to strengthen some key names in Portuguese painting from the last thirty years. In this sense, the strategy of the gallery, which alternately holds exhibitions of varying aspects, has been to organise and/or coorganise major exhibitions for its artists by presenting their work in museums and places of institutional prestige, as well as having presence at larger contemporary art fairs.
