January 2017 Dear Travelers and Friends, In 1977, Academic Arrangements Abroad began as a modest venture offering student programs to France. This year we are celebrating forty years in the world of cultural travel, and as I review the selection of unique experiences featured in this current Cultural Calendar, many memorable events come to mind. Eighteen years ago, we fell in love with the nation of Cuba, and have since shared our passion for the island’s art and culture with thousands of guests. Havana is a living museum of five centuries of architecture, and to help preserve her unique ambiance we launched the nonprofit Havana Heritage Foundation in 2015. This February, we offer a historic opportunity to see a new side of Cuba in a new way—on a cruise along her Caribbean coast aboard a small luxury yacht. Art historian Olivier Bernier, one of our most distinguished lecturers, led his first program seventeen years ago. This June he joins us aboard an elegant new river vessel, to share his insights on the many civilizations that have flourished along the Rhine. In 2000 we welcomed The Metropolitan Museum of Art as a valued travel partner, and since then have collaborated on hundreds of programs. In 2017, The Met returns to the Galápagos after a hiatus of several years, for a family-friendly adventure led by an expert in the art of the ancient Americas. • Cuba by Sea Aboard Variety Voyager, February 18-25, 2017 Sail from Santiago to Cienfuegos with the author of a new biography of Castro. Admire Cuban art in Camagüey, stroll the cobbled streets of Trinidad, and hear a renowned a cappella choir. • The Majestic Rhine: Amsterdam to Basel Aboard AmaKristina featuring Art Basel, June 9-17, 2017 Embark a new deluxe riverboat for a scenic cruise from Amsterdam to Basel. Tour storied castles, view the Lorelei Rock, and admire art from classical to modern. Conclude at the Basel Art Fair. • Art, Empire & Nature: Exploring Ecuador & the Galápagos, July 7-15, 2017 Marvel at Quito’s colonial landmarks and visit an ancient market town before flying to the Galápagos for a four-day cruise. Swim with sea lions and spot unique wildlife on nature walks. • The Great Châteaux of Bordeaux Aboard AmaDolce, October 18-26, 2017 Discover the wines of Bordeaux on a leisurely cruise during the grape harvest. Visit the châteaux where the grapes are grown, enjoy haute cuisine, and learn the secrets of terroir. We offer trips to more than 100 countries. In the coming year, guests can explore the cultures of former Yugoslavian nations on Undiscovered Balkans, visit breathtaking monasteries in Northern Spain and France on Stone by Stone: Creating The Met Cloisters, and experience Undiscovered China: From Ancient Cities to Modern Shanghai. It all began four decades ago with seven days in Paris—and we have you to thank for your support over the years. We look forward to sharing many more adventures with you in 2017... and beyond. Sincerely,
Jim Friedlander President
