THE R OYA L OAK FOU NDATION

Dear Members and Friends of Royal Oak, America, England, and France have deep cultural and historical connections—bonds made even stronger during World War II. Please join us on this early summer cruise aboard Sea Cloud II, timed for the week after the anniversary of D-Day and taking in the rugged beauty of Normandy and the southwest coast of England. We are pleased to be sharing this voyage with The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Harvard University and delighted to be accompanied by Melinda Watt, an Associate Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum, and Harvard’s Professor Leo Damrosch and lecturer Joyce Van Dyke. Joining us for a portion of the postlude in London and Kent will be renowned British historian Professor Sir David Cannadine, who is also a member of our Board of Directors.

This seven-night cruise will explore remarkable natural, cultural, and historic sights. In the Channel Islands, admire the walled garden of La Seigneurie on tiny Sark, or tour the house on Guernsey where Victor Hugo wrote Les Misérables. From St. Malo visit magnificent Mont St. Michel. Tender ashore on Tresco in the Scilly Isles to discover the terraced, subtropical Abbey Gardens. Trelissick Gardens and the family home of Agatha Christie near Dartmouth are additional highlights. Or you may prefer to delve further into D-Day history with tours of Brittany’s lesser-visited American Cemetery and the English beaches where U.S. troops practiced for the invasion. An optional prelude in Normandy features visits to World War II sites, a viewing of the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry, and charming Honfleur, a favorite of the Impressionists. An optional London postlude celebrates the legacy of Winston Churchill and includes visits to his home at Chartwell and the Cabinet War Rooms.
