LET TER FR OM TH E E D ITOR Dear Readers, We participate in many rituals and traditions in our lives, from marking family rites of passage to celebrating national holidays. These events help us to preserve the past, but, in my opinion, they serve a greater purpose—to pass the baton of knowledge and renew the spirit within our communities. The design world enjoys many traditions as well, and one of the most treasured among them is the Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Back in 1973, when the city’s infrastructure was crumbling and fabric of neighborhoods was unraveling, our community responded and rallied in support of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, a refuge for urban kids. And of course designers did it in the most vibrant, stylish and splashiest way possible. This issue of ARRAY acknowledges the enormous contributions made by the organization ($22 million raised, 10,000 children served and 15,000 annual visitors), and celebrates how this annual event has become part of the industry and a jewel in the City’s cultural crown. Cathy Whitlock highlights many of the designers who participated in this year’s Show House, from veterans like Charlotte Moss, Cullman and Kravis, and Peter Pennoyer to first timers such as Studio DB (It’s Showtime! p. 24). In these pages we also profile designer Young Huh, a Detroit native who launched her design firm in 2007 after earning a law degree, and never looked back. Young’s work was featured at the most recent Kips Bay Decorator Show House, transforming the fifth-floor atelier into a studio worthy of a great artist, complete with skylights and a salon-like wall of paintings (Artistic Achievement, p. 36). For a complete history of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, flip to our Backstory (p. 80) to discover more background and details. We hope you find inspiration in these pages for your own work as well as carry on the tradition of our industry to simultaneously do well, and do good.

The adventurous Topher Delaney shops the 200 Lex “Sixteen floors of invention...what surprises of beauty + invention!” is how landscape architect Topher Delaney describes the New York Design Center. Delaney, who with Calvin Chin, runs a high-energy studio in San Francisco, also participated in this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, turning the backyard into a peaceful—and funky—stylish retreat. “We do our best to make the world around us one of creative expression and freedom,” states the duo, and Delaney’s choices from the 200 Lex showrooms provides of ideas for expressing your own creativity for your outdoor and indoor spaces. Delaney’s projects range from public art and landscaping to private projects—the Maxville Lake Winery in Napa Valley; the Orangerie in Gothenburg, Sweden; the USF Global Exchange at the University of San Francisco; Marin General Hospital’s sanctuary garden; and both indoor and outdoor design for private residences.

Two grand wood rustic vessels. What is particularly significant to Delaney is the width and depth of these two vessels representing an old growth tree—they both appear to have been created for a specific use. Now your imagination can create the historic narrative. Available from Lance Thompson Inc., The Gallery at 200 Lex powered by Incollect.

Handcrafted replications of classic and contemporary exterior/interior planters composed of marble, rock dust and resin. Terrific contemporary sculptural vessels for the garden. Available at Pennoyer Newman.

Bretoia’s Copper Gong. A spiritual and graphic sculpture to resonate in a garden. Available at Lost City Arts.

Standing tall is the Dennis & Leen’s limestone fireplace. The heft of the individual stones sculpted in a classic rendition of French high-style country offers a light form metaphorically and functionally for a garden. Available at Dennis & Leen.

Michelle Quan’s elegant ceramic stoneware wall hanging of black-and-white discs are symbolic references to “eastern iconography articulating Ms. Quan’s wonder of the visual thread that connects us with the experience of the world.” That resonates with Delaney's own practice of inquiry within the parameters of the Exterior Natural world. Available at FAIR.

The Canopy Chair offers comfort with distinctive style. The graphic pattern stripes of the textiles are an emphatic counterpoint to the metal structure of the canopy and framework of the chair itself. Available at Century Furniture.

Delaney is so appreciative of these elegant fixtures, which a hand will touch and turn on a daily basis. Available at Baxter Hardware.

Books

Every Day Decorating Jeffrey Bilhuber and Jacqueline Terrebonne Rizzoli March 2019 256 pages $45

Atmosphere: The Seven Elements of Great Design James Howard Abrams March 2019 272 pages $50

New York Design at Home Anthony Iannacci Abrams March 2019 352 pages $50

The New Glamour: Interiors with Star Quality Jeff Andrews Rizzoli April 2019 256 pages $45

Lauded as one of the top authorities in the world of interiors, Jeffrey Bilhuber’s fifth book Everyday Decorating will not disappoint. Co-written with Galerie Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jacqueline Terrebonne, the pair created the ultimate decorating book for those who follow Instagram and Pinterest seeking design knowledge. His tips and guidelines on everything from picking out paint colors to selecting a sofa to making a bed. Forgoing the standard format of showcasing houses, the book is divided into chapters on how to create happy, comfortable, colorful and personal interiors from iconic images of his work.

Atmosphere: The Seven Elements of Great Design marks James Howard’s first book. As creative partner and husband of interior designer Phoebe Howard, the designer in his own right specializes in interior architecture and creating comfortable, stylish and sophisticated homes. Centering on the “evocative atmosphere that characterizes the world’s great spaces,” the book focuses on the “wow” factor of a room that literally grabs your attention and makes you take notice.

More than just a reflection of their work, a designer’s lair is a true laboratory where innovations and creativity remain an essential part of experimentation. Author Anthony Iannacci’s compendium of classic and modern New York interiors represents the varied work of interior designers such as Neal Becksteadt, Tom Flynn and Joan Michaels who are among the 27 who open the doors to their homes. Readers are offered an up close and personal look at how a designer lives and designs as revealed by their personalities and cherished objects and collections. Designers, much like their clients, are on a small budget and the book showcases creative ways they deal with the occasional misshaped kitchen, small bathroom and shared living spaces. Photographed by Noe DeWitt, the book features many photographs seen for the very first time and is very detail driven— from a Pablo Picasso painting reproduced as wallpaper to unique ways to display kitchen utensils.

West Coast interior designer Jeff Andrews’ client roster includes the top of pop culture—Ryan Seacrest, Kris Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian—so who better than the celebrated designer to pen a book on “Star Quality”? The first-time author imparts his wisdom on how to create your own space that will shine like a luminary influenced by his own trademark style. Offering advice on how to “create a vision keeping choices elegant and cohesive” and “cultivate cinematic style with a feeling of extravagance,” the book encourages readers to fearlessly inject their own bold touches. Andrews’ version of Hollywood glam is reflected throughout the book from show-stopping light fixtures, “luxe-yet-comfortable” furnishings to the infusion of color into serene spaces and how to carefully curate a collection for the ultimate take on old Hollywood.

With a client roster that includes Anna Wintour and Elsa Peretti, the highly acclaimed designer’s (who has been compared to a “21st century Billy Baldwin”) collection of books are essential to any design library. Be sure to check out Jeffrey Bilhuber’s Design Basics, Defining Luxury: Qualities of Life at Home, American Master: Notes on Style and Substance and The Way Home: Reflections on American Beauty.

Howard believes the creation of the aesthetic is not only an art but a science that is more than just formulas and rules as illustrated in the book’s dozen captivating chapters. The designer who runs the popular Southern-based stores Mrs. Howard and Max & Company is also a force behind Sherrill Furniture’s collection Mr. and Mrs. Howard.

The designer’s award-winning work is featured in Elle Decor, Architectural Digest and Veranda and his collections for A. Rudin, Astek Wallcoverings, wood surfaces collaboration with Jamie Beckwith and Mansour rugs are favorites among designers worldwide.

John Richardson at Home John Richardson Rizzoli March 2019 224 pages $65

Bloom: The Luminous Gardens of Frederico Azevedo Frederico Azevedo Pointed Leaf Press September 2019 200 Pages $75

Award-winning interior designer Bunny Williams needs no introduction as the Interior Magazine Hall of Famer and AD 100 member’s work is the stuff of legend for the past 40 years. Her best-selling books—some seven in all, chronicle her love and passion for the overall creation of a house (case in point: An Affair with Houses). The multi-talented designer’s latest book Love Affairs with Houses continues the tradition, lovingly depicted as a story-filled monograph showcasing her credo “The best spaces have the best stories.”

Interior designer Eric Ross has been designing homes across the South for the past 20 plus years. His timeless traditional interiors and Southern approach to design is chronicled in his first book Enduring Southern Homes. His work is filled with heritage and history where each room telling a story and his love of French country is a bit reminiscent of the late Oklahoma designer Charles Faudree with a twist of Southern soul and hospitality.

Known for his acclaimed work as art historian and Pablo Picasso biographer, Sir John Richardson’s long-awaited biography is here with the publication of his book John Richardson at Home. A tour of the designer’s Bohemian-infused interiors is filled with remnants of a life well lived. Artwork from his friends and legends Picasso, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol and George Braque, along with fine American and English antiques and textiles dot the spaces of his homes from London and the bucolic Buckingham countryside to the south of France (Chateau de Castille), each with fascinating stories to tell.

Bloom: The Luminous Gardens of Frederico Azevedo presents the work of Frederico Azevedo, a landscape designer whose work has a special emphasis on flowers. This stunning body of work explores the hallmarks of an Azevedo garden—his signature curving, floral borders, and integration of native plants. Azevedo often creates multi-dimensional vistas using layers of flowers, trees, grasses, shrubs, and hedges. The results are soft and romantic, always sophisticated and well-executed, and most importantly, site-specific to the unique conditions of any environment. Born in Brazil, Azevedo studied landscape design in Brazil, England and the U.S. He also founded Unlimited Earth Care, Inc. in 1993, to create beautiful, sustainable landscapes, and has become a destination for cutting-edge landscape design and accessories. His holistic approach to landscape design has been recognized nationally and internationally in architectural and landscaping publications. Azevedo divides his time between the Hamptons, New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami.

Each room tells of her “affair,” detailing the style, what peaked her interest and her approach to the room décor based on the lifestyles of her clients. Divulging her personal secrets on how flexible classic pieces fit into her latest projects, the book offers case studies from the master herself. Part memoir and part how-to guidebook, Love Affairs with Houses is a great source of inspiration.

The Nashville-based designer’s work has appeared in Traditional Home, Southern Style and Southern Lady and his penchant for color, fabrics and love of all things Southern are reflected in the varied projects in his book with practical design tips no matter what region you live in.

Richardson’s life in his apartments in Manhattan and his Connecticut retreat are also detailed along with his celebrated guests such as Fran Lebowitz, Oscar and Annette de la Renta, Lady Diana Cooper and Fernand Léger which make the book a fascinating read. Whether you are a design aficionado or enjoy a study in social history, the book offers something for everyone.

Jennifer Cohler Mason created the perfect sitting room for a family that entertains at home. A combination of masculine and feminine details makes it appealing to all family members and their guests. Ms. Mason says, "I wanted to give the room some touches of glam without going over the top." She also wanted to provide a backdrop for the family’s art collection, and used Benjamin Moore paint on the rooms subtly textured walls and textured ceiling treatment. The approach to the sitting room through a small entry hall sets the mood—a wildly patterned wall covering and a complimentary ceiling treatment immediately make an impact. The theme of the dining room, Rhapsody in Blue, is evident throughout the room’s dramatic touches—midnight blue double-glaze lacquered walls with gold embellishments that form the perfect backdrop for the vintage and custommade furnishings and contemporary art and sculpture. Inspired by James McNeill Whistler’s famed Peacock Room, gold elements were used to create a sense of depth and showstopping drama as handcrafted, 24-karat gold porcelain discs from Dougall Paulson grace the walls in a random fashion. The firm’s penchant for modern traditional is also on display with a rare 1960’s Maison Jansen polished brass fireplace paired with an oversize 1950‘s Maison Leleu sideboard that doubles as a bar. Other wow factors include the hunter green walls and eggplant colored claw-foot bathtub from Kohler that gives the room an overall feeling of a rainforest. “Calling my space ‘A Room of One’s Own’ pays homage to Virginia Woolf’s renowned feminist novel and also expresses my design philosophy. Interiors need to reflect the people who inhabit them,” says Robinson. The goal of creating a “woman’s sanctuary that is soothing, sophisticated and peaceful” translated into a soft color palette of creams, blushes and greys and a judicious use of gold accents that as the designer explains, “it created an ethereality that adds importance. The gold color is a wonderful tool that helps guide your eye around the room.” Robinson also employed a bit of ingenuity by transforming the firebox into a rosé bar. “It seemed like the perfect place to assemble libations during the spring season.”

The master bedroom marks Charlotte Moss’ ninth project at Kips Bay. Inspired by the discovery of a palampore fabric on Instagram and Lady Gaga’s periwinkle dress at the Golden Globes formed the basis of the color and pattern scheme. “Our imaginary residents of the room are a couple who loves to travel and wanted a bedroom that reminded them of where they had been,” notes Moss. Must-have decorative elements included a Chinese screen, Dutch lantern and Vitorrio Bonacina wicker chairs made near Lake Como. Furnishings from the designer’s collection include the Indochine sisal from Stark Carpet, a settee, pagoda bench and telephone table from Century Furniture and bed linens she designed in conjunction with Leontine Linens. “In designing this chic but comfortable guest bedroom, we assembled a palette inspired by the documentary wall upholstery fabric, with a citron twist. Schumacher’s Le Castellet grace the walls and curtains, while the striped bed canopy offers a bright surprise,” explains architect Peter Pennoyer. “Our focus on finishes and textures led us to bejeweled pillows and a modern decorative paint application to the historic fireplace surround.” Other decorative elements include a mix of sisal and Swedish carpets layered to soften the room and artwork by Christina Burch and Christopher Flach that “lends flights of fancy to this enchanting bedroom—a cozy welcome for our imagined Parisian houseguest who plans to paint the town red.”

Sheila Bridges’ passion for animals (Australian Shepards Jax and the late Wheeler to be exact) largely influenced the design of the small reception room on the showhouse ground floor. Designed in honor of Wheeler and known as “Le Salon des Chiens,” the concept was part function/part welcome respite for dogs and their walkers as they return from an afternoon stroll. Antique and contemporary portraits of four-legged animals and their forefathers celebrates all things canine while a mural filled with dogs in Central Park from R. Graves and Company and a historical Civil Rights photographs of dogs grace the walls. The designer also took advantage of the room’s shower and turned it into a mosscovered dog bath.

Alexandra Pappas & Tatyana Miron Pappas Miron Design

S

haring a mutual love and appreciation for beautiful interiors, childhood friends Alexandra Pappas and Tatyana Miron formed their design firm Pappas Miron Design in 2003. Bringing a “fresh eye to residential homes of all styles,” the pair have designed everything from Upper East Side pre-war apartment to summer homes in the Hamptons and Nantucket. Their work, guided by the concept of living in relaxed, modern environments, showcases their love of rich colors, unique textiles, contemporary pieces and one-of-a -kind custom furniture and antiques.

Sitting Area

Photograph by Nickolas Sargent

For an Italian-inspired sitting area, the designers of Pappas Miron took their cues from the room’s original terrazzo flooring and chimney breast. “Upon first seeing these elements, we were reminded of the great modern Italian interiors which are created by a mix of periods and style, always resulting in unique flair. We used the deep coloring of the floor as a back drop to create a handsome and luxurious sitting room, featuring rich teal velvet wall upholstery, Venetian plaster ceilings and a gorgeous antique carpet. So inviting are the tones and materials, one would be drawn to curl-up with a good book by the fire or entertain late into the night. This 4th floor room is both elegantly timeless and playful, as well as an ode to bohemian style,” the designers note.

The room evokes an old-world sophistication, enhanced by the use of color, mix of antiques and luxe furnishings. “Luxurious fabrics were layered with varying textures: cream bouclé on a ’70s styled custom sofa, saffron-colored silk on the tufted antique lounge chair and a dreamy linen gauze on our sheer drapery that has a breath of pink,” the designers detailed. “An antique Swedish chest plays nicely with new work from ceramicist Jennifer Nocon in her lamp collaboration with the ever-stylish David Netto and a spray of stunning mirrors from Cristobal Morales are a wonder to behold. A suede-covered vintage Karl Springer étagère hosts a collection of vintage pottery and bronze vessels.”

or this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, designer Young Huh was given a unique task: to reimagine the vaulted, fifth-floor loft of the Upper East Side townhouse. She rose to the challenge, transforming the unconventional space into a whimsical, brightly-hued studio—channeling the artist ateliers of Paris like those of Matisse and Collette. “With these old skylights, it just made us think of La Bohème,” recalls Huh. Her concept came to life with both small and sweeping gestures: graphic, custom-fit wallpaper from Fromental—aptly called Braque after the Cubist artist—strategically placed with leafy vines climbing up to the walls, abstract paintings hung salon-style, and a six-foot-long chandelier with hand-painted lampshades suspended from the ceiling. “We really wanted this to be a celebration of creativity, and imagining what it would be like if I could have a studio of my own, and if it could be anything, what would it look like?”

Stepping inside this dream-like space, it is hard to believe that it took Huh a little while to find her way into the design world. A Detroit native, she embraced the arts as a middle school student at Cranbrook and later took numerous art history classes at Smith College. In spite of this early inclination, she decided on a very different career path, obtaining a law degree from Fordham University. As she was preparing to take the bar—a bit disenchanted—her husband suggested that being a lawyer might not be the right career for her. “He was completely right,” she says. “I was hoping to do something creative, and it really was my husband who pushed me to think outside of the box, and said don’t let your education be a burden to you. Just go and do what you want to do.” She started considering various creative fields, but design still didn’t cross her mind until one night at a cocktail party when she met an interior designer and learned what he did. The quick conversation was a revelation. She landed an internship with him, emphasizing that her legal background could be an asset, but as she soon proved, so was her keen eye.

Huh loves to create unique table settings for guests and family dinners and mixes and matches her collection of china and accessories. Photo credit: Brittany Ambridge

In 2007, Huh founded her eponymous design firm, and since then, she’s undertaken a wide range of projects, from residences and vacation homes to restaurants, hotels, and even a private jet. Most recently, she’s been working on full-scale hotel in Turks & Caicos. “That’s super fun because it’s like theater,” she says. “You have a much larger audience to please, and it’s a more conceptual and big-picture thinking.”

Huh especially likes to arrange flowers keeping the arrangements simple as though the very thing had just been picked in the garden. Photo credit: Brittany Ambridge 38

In addition to designing the interiors, the firm is creating the hotel’s fabric patterns and wallpaper. Product development, however, is nothing new to Huh. In the last few years, she has developed fabrics for Peter Fasano, and glass and mosaic for AKDO’s 2018 Elements Collection.

Huh designed this kitchen for the Holiday House Show House 2017 in New York City, benefitting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. She collaborated with Domino magazine, Bosch appliances and Cambria quartz surfaces. Photo credit: Marco Ricca

40

It isn’t only the diversity of the client work and projects that excites Huh, but also the limitless wellspring of sources and inspiration from which to draw she says: “A lot of times clients have things in mind and I always say what’s really fun about doing this as a job is you can try on so many different styles and feelings.” And yet, she always filters these many influences through a lens that is at once classic and contemporary, joyful and elegant. “We hope that we can create really warm and inviting spaces that have a modern snap to it, but also a little romantic,” Huh explains.

“It’s nice when you can have a little fantasy in your life.”

A young family with a summer house in the Hamptons, did not want the typical sun, sea and sand beach theme in the decor. Huh chose to focus on the clients’ love of travel and appreciation of other cultures to bring a global perspective to the interiors. Photo credit: John Bessler

Two large-scale, site-specific installations are part of Cooper Hewitt’s 2019 Triennial entitled “Nature,” in partnership with Cube Design Museum. For The Tree of 40 Fruit, artist Sam van Aken used traditional techniques to graft disparate branches together to yield apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries and apricots—all from one tree! When blossoming, the tree looks like an artistic bouquet, but the true purpose is to preserve heirloom and rare fruit varieties from old orchards. Petrified River by Ensamble Studio architects, is a 40-foot-long concrete “river” bookended by a “pond” and a “hill” representing how the wild landscape of Manhattan has been rendered unrecognizable by urbanization. Open City There’s nothing more exciting than gaining access to somewhere you can’t ordinarily go. That’s the idea behind Open House New York, when for one weekend a year you can get a guided tour of hundreds of spaces, many of them normally closed to the public. If you’ve ever walked past one of the city’s architectural icons and wondered, “What’s it like in there?” here’s your chance. From a hidden East Village cemetery to the planned site of the new Penn (Moynihan) Station, oh, the places you’ll go! October 12-14, at various locations in all five boroughs. Chef José Andrés—not only a great chef but a great humanitarian—has created a space not unlike the restaurants and mercados of Spain, where families and friends get together to eat, socialize, enjoy a quick snack or a business lunch. At Mercado, there are kiosks with many types of Spanish food, two bars, a coffee shop and two full-service restaurants, Mar and Leña. Chef Andrés collaborated with friends and renown chefs Albert and Ferran Adrià of elBulli, considered one of the world’s best restaurants, to bring the best foods of Spain to NYC. Kiosks feature specialties such as paella, mariscos, tortilla de patatas, jamon and quesos, and assorted tapas. Mercado is a place to not only enjoy all the many tastes of Spain, but to share with friends and experience a new form of “social media”—talking and enjoying each other’s company!

Chefs Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson—of Minetta Tavern, Balthazar, Daniel, Pastis and more—have been cooking together for 25 years. Now they have their own restaurant in Tribeca, and bring their experience with them, cooking updated French classics with a twist. Have a cocktail at the bar and relax in the elegant Art Déco surroundings before heading to your table with its red leather banquette. Try the Crispy Egg with Merquez and Butters Beans or an Omelette A L’Oseille with Pomme Frites at brunch. The Blowfish Tails and Smoked Trout Beignets, or Crème de Radis—a black radish soup—to start your dinner, and move on to the Bavette aux Poivre or Atlantic Cod with Asparagus, Morel Farci and Nettle Cream. The wine list has excellent choices in a range of prices, and Frenchette’s knowledgeable staff is very helpful.

Head to FiDi for a casual dining experience thanks to James Kent (of Eleven Madison Park) and Jeff Katz (Del Posto). Located in a landmark Art Déco tower building, the globally inspired menu features starters like White Bean Hummus with Njuda and Puffed Bread, Charred Octopus with Red Rice and Morcilla, and move on to entrees like a Grilled Pork Chop with Asian Pear and Mustard, or Roasted Short Ribs for two with Quinoa and Chimichurri. Executive pastry chef Renata Ameni’s Sticky Toffee Pudding is proving to be a big hit to end your meal. The full dinner menu is available at the bar, and opens at 4:45pm and stays open until 2:00am on weeknights.

Located at the Moxy Hotel, Francesco Panella’s Feroce Ristorante feel the Italian vibe as soon as they walk in the door. The menu is inspired from various regions of Italy that change with the seasons, including dishes like millefoglie di melezane made with fried eggplant, imported mozzarella, organic tomatoes and fresh basil; pappardelle al cinghiale, a freshly made pasta with handcut wild boar shoulder and sausage ragu, and Pesce Spada, grilled swordfish with roasted cherry tomatoes, eggplant and fresh basil. Feroce has intimate booths, outdoor seating and a private dining room. Racingstriped leather banquettes are a riff on the upholstery found in vintage Ferraris. Finish off your meal with a selection from the dining room’s grappa cart.

A look at a few recent celebrations.

Scrapbook, McMillen Inc.

On Tuesday, April 23, The Gallery at 200 Lex Powered by Incollect in collaboration with McMillen Inc. celebrated the launch of their exhibition in the gallery space titled Scrapbook, McMillen Inc. The exhibition is a compilation of newspaper clippings, oversized prints, client proposals and projects, watercolor renderings and more. Celebrating 95 years and being one of the oldest design firms in the country, the exhibition is an incredible tribute to all the work done by past and present designers of the firm. Along with the opening exhibition, over 100 guests enjoyed a very interesting and, at times humorous, panel discussion led by Emily Evans Eerdmans with Ann Pyne, Christopher Apostle, Benoist F. Drut and Elizabeth Pyne Singer.

Katherine McCallum, Mary Beth Donohue, and Ann Pyne, the firm’s current president.

McMillen Inc. was founded in 1924 by Eleanor Stockstrom McMillen Brown, who opened her business with a modest intention—to sell a few pieces of furniture and decorative bibelots. Five years later, McMillen Inc. had become a fullscale interior design operation, complete with a business office and an interior architecture department, unique for its time.

In its 95 years, McMillen Inc. has designed and decorated homes for many of America’s most well-known individuals and families. The firm’s commissions have included the restoration of Rosedown Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana; a house for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford II in Grosse Pointe, Illinois; and work for three American presidents—John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Gerald Ford. McMillen was asked to participate in the first Kips Bay Decorator Show House in 1973 and regularly participates in other charitable events in New York City. McMillen has been remarkable in its ability to keep pace with current trends and client attitudes, to surmount the challenges of wars and financial fluctuations, and to retain its decorators and designers for decades.

In 1975, with the blessing of Mrs. Brown, who was almost 100 years old, McMillen employees purchased McMillen Inc. As a partnership headed by Betty Sherrill, the firm remained committed to the aesthetic principles and business practices established by Mrs. Brown. Today’s partners include Luis A. Rey, Mary Louise Guertler,

Guests from across the interior design industry mingled and shopped before they enjoyed a delicious feast in the exhibition space of The Gallery at 200 Lex. The evening was full of laughter and joy as they dined and continued to admire the “Behind the Shadows” exhibition that was still up through March 8. The evening ended with fortune cookie take out boxes with quotes from a few of the greatest designers in the industry.

Day of Design In support of NYCxDesign, the New York Design Center hosted days of design in celebration of contemporary design from Saturday, May 18 through Monday, May 20. Participating showrooms hosted an array of events from showroom tours, new product previews, panel discussion, demonstrations and designer meet-and-greets. Guests enjoyed special programming on the ’80s in Guy Regal’s showroom to previewing Harbour Outdoor’s new showroom space on the seventh floor. Guests continued to celebrate design by making their way down to the fifth floor for the annual Live on Five ’19, Shop the Look event. Each showroom on the fifth floor partnered with a different designer to create virtual vignettes featuring different products from all the showrooms on the floor. All the events in the building over the course of two days showcased the enormous range of design housed in the New York Design Center from contemporary to modern product lines and celebrated everyone’s different take on design.

Thos. Moser Suite 1301, 212.753.7005, thosmoser.com Thos. Moser designs are not cutting-edge statements of current fashion, but rather a synthesis of what has been given to us by craftsmen and designers of the past. They are timeless and, unlike style or fashion, have relevance across cultures and centuries. In designing our furniture, we are committed to simplicity in form – to achieve grace through proportion and simplicity, rather than embellishment. As such, we strive to create forms that are pleasing in themselves; forms that serve human needs and aesthetics predicated on function.

attended the very first Kips Bay Decorator Show House as a ‘wanna-be’ decorator,” says renowned interior designer and Kips Bay President’s Dinner Chair Bunny Williams. She got involved helping out with the show house and the President’s Dinner about 10 years ago, and Williams participated in her first one as a designer in 1982. She was invited by Jim Druckman, President and CEO of the New York Design Center and President of the board of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, to get involved with sourcing the house and selecting the designers. Built in 1920 by D. & J. Jardine, the 12,425-square-foot, double-width Georgian townhouse at 36-38 East 74th Street boasts a garden, 10 wood-burning fire places, a living room with bay windows and an art studio with 17-foot ceilings hosted this year’s show house. “We go through the submissions and we also reach out to the top designers, too,” explains Williams. “We want a range of designers—established designers, and we want to give an opportunity for new designers as well. Careers have been made by being in the Kips Bay Decoraters 80

Showhouse.” Along with Co-chairs Jamie Drake and Alexa Hampton, they looked for varied styles—someone who does contemporary, someone who does transitional, someone who does traditional. According to Williams, for a long time no one wanted to live in townhouses so they were always available, but in the last 20 years or so there have been many foreign real estate investors in NYC and buying a town house was easier because they didn’t need to go through a co-op board. “Every year, we work hard to find an exceptional house that will act as the ideal setting for renowned designers from all over the world to display their personal styles,” she says. The committee starts talking to real estate brokers as early as November, and when the show house is over, the townhouse sells after so many people see the phenomenal kitchens, bathrooms and transformation. “Those interested see it in a different light from when it was just an empty building,” she says. Since 1915, Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club has focused on improving and enhancing the lives of New York City’s economically

and socially disadvantaged children. In 1973, Frederick R. Coudert, then president of the board of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, was great friends with a number of designers and together they came up with the idea of getting a house and decorating it as a fundraiser for the organization. The Palm Beach location was added in 2017, and between the President’s Dinner and ticket sales from over 15,000 show house attendees, the event has raised more than $22 million since it began. Williams shares some insight on the show house’s success. “The thing that’s very special that I don’t think most people understand, is how did all these prima donna designers get along. They often at the end of the year form a bond. They do this work in a limited amount of time and everyone has the same pressure. Everyone helps each other out. It becomes an amazing camaraderie and you never forget those relationships. It shows a whole different side to our business. All these people can all be in competition with each other, but when it comes together, they all work together and help each other.”
