Speakers Adam Parums Metallurgical Coal & Steel Raw Materials Consultant CRU UK

Tema: Overview of the Metallurgical Coal Market, Recent trends and Outlook

After studying economics at the University of Sheffield, Adam joined CRU in May 2010 and initially worked as an analyst for the finished steel market of Latin America. After a year in this position, he became responsible for CRU’s analysis of the global steel long products market. With a good understanding of the finished steel market and its drivers, Adam joined the steel raw materials team in November 2011 as supply-side analyst for Australasia with an overall responsibility for metallurgical coal. His experience includes a number of research trips to key steel raw material supplying regions and speaking at industry leading conferences.

Courtland Acosta Business Development Director Eurotire USA

Tema: Too Big to Fail.

Mr. Acosta is a veteran equipment manager, bringing over 30 years of global experience in mining, fleet management and heavy civil construction. Originally a master heavy-duty mechanic and welder, Acosta possesses a thorough understanding of maintenance and support, and he has received extensive training on OTR tire management and equipment performance monitoring throughout his career. In recent years, Acosta oversaw major mine operations for Goldcorp, Inc. for their San Luis Potosi, Mexico project; Arizona’s Pinto Valley for BHP Billiton; and New Jersey’s Tilcon site for Oldcastle Materials Group, with an emphasis on OTR tire management.

Rene Alvarez CEO & President SmartSimulation Canada

Tema: Applying Computer Simulation and Theory of Constraints to improve truck allocation and maximize production in open pit mines.

Rene Alvarez is an Industrial Engineer and holds a Master of Engineering from the University of Toronto. He has more than 25 years of successful professional experience as an expert in computer simulation and continuous improvement techniques. As a researcher he has published a number of papers in Canadian and European journals, and presented papers in different conferences in North America, South America and Europe. He has taught Theory of Constraints and Computer Simulation at the University in Chile, and has applied these techniques in different industries (e.g. Mining, Healthcare, and Transportation). During his career he has developed complex simulation models utilizing different simulation software (e.g. ExtendSim, Arena, Promodel) for private companies and governmental agencies. He is the founder, President and CEO, of SmartSimulation, a Canadian company aimed to assist mining companies in maximizing production, optimizing the use of resources, and improving mine operations through a smart combination of Theory of Constraints (TOC) principles and Computer Simulation.


Juan Manuel Sanchez Director Ejecutivo Carbocoque Colombia

Tema: Coking Coal in Colombia Challenges and Opportunities.

Civil Engineer with post graduate specialization in Mining Projects, Negotiation and International Business Relations. Has participated in negotiations with executives from over twenty-five countries in America, Europe and Asia. Mr. Sanchez is currently the Executive Director of Carbocoque. He has served as an expert in the area of marketing and sales nationally and internationally, serving as trade negotiator and strategist. in addition, he is Professor of negotiation in Finance at the University of Rosario in Bogota and Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla.

Edmundo Laporte Senior VP/Director of Mining Services ECSI, LLC USA

Tema: The implementation in Latin America of the International Standards for Resources and Reserves Reporting.

Mr. Laporte, a licensed engineer, serves as Director of Mining Services for ECSI. He has extensive experience in managing mining, geotechnical and industrial construction projects in North and South America, Europe and the Middle East. Mr. Laporte has participated in multiple metal, coal and hard rock mining projects in the USA and in South America. These include underground operations in epithermal narrow vein deposits in Mexico; large open pit copper mines in Chile and Argentina; underground limestone, sandstone and oil shale mines in the USA; underground coal mines in the USA and Colombia; and multiple open pit coal and hard-rock projects in South America and the USA. Mr. Laporte is responsible for coordinating multiple geotechnical engineering projects; development of mine plans and financial models for both local and international clients; inspection design and certification of coal mines; technical consulting; evaluation of technical and financial feasibility of surface and underground mining operations; as well as preparation and research of expert testimony. Mr. Laporte is a Certified Person/Qualified Person under JORC and NI 43-101.

Michael Ferguson Vice President Taggart Global USA

Tema: Advancements in Coal Preparation and Material Handling.

Mike Ferguson has more than 33 years of experience in coal industry including leadership roles in mining, coal preparation, material handling, and bulk transportation. Specific background includes managing engineering and construction projects through full project lifecycle; mine operations in the US; process engineering on Enhanced Fuel Projects; port management for coal and bulk commodities; and coal sales and business development. Mike is currently Vice President for Taggart Global. Taggart is the world leader in coal preparation and material handling. As Vice President, Mike oversees many of Taggart’s business development activities including early identification of projects and preliminary engineering of port and terminal projects. Previously, Mike served as Regional Vice President for Kinder Morgan Bulk Terminals oversee both blue water and brown water assets. Mike is a graduate of the University of Missouri – Rolla with a degree in Mining Engineering and The Auburn University with an MBA.
