Having relocated numerous times myself, I have a good sense of what an expat experiences. With this second edition of Howdo we hope to make Eindhoven and the Eindhovenaren even more familiar to you than we already did in our first issue. For me there was no Adeus in Brazil, nor a Sayonara in Japan or a So Long in England. I basically had to find out for myself and cross many hurdles along the way. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer. Yet the coming months will prove to be a feast for your eyes. In October the much acclaimed Dutch Design Week provides a stage for many (inter) national students of the Design Academy. In November, Eindhoven does true justice to its name as the City of Light and the birthplace of Philips by hosting GLOW, a spectacular light show that attracts crowds from near and far. True, filling out paperwork and applying for permits will be among your least exciting experiences during your first days abroad. Fortunately the Holland Expat Center South is there for you and your family. Read all about DDW, GLOW, the Expat Center and much more in this issue of Howdo! Enjoy, sayonara and Howdo! Joost Pool

Buying or renting? When you decide to move elsewhere, the question of buying or renting a house arises. Especially in times of financial crisis this is an important consideration. Low mortgage interests, decreasing house prices and increasing rent are all important factors when making a decision. But how do you know what’s the right thing to do in your personal situation? ABN AMRO, specialized in expat banking, can give you personal advice about this matter. The increasing rental prices and the limited possibility to change something about the house are disadvantages of renting a house. Is the duration of your period of stay insecure? If yes, renting might be the best option for you. ABN AMRO the bank for expats ABN AMRO is the leading Dutch bank for expats. Our employees not only understand the language, they also understand your situation. They know everything about the financial rules and regulations for expats. They can give you tailor-made advice about buying or renting a house. You can also contact the bank for other matters. When opening an account you will receive a complete package to manage your account: a debit card, a credit card and various tools for online banking. Other benefits include:
For expats it is not always sure how long they will stay in one place or country. Therefore, it is important to make careful considerations in buying or renting a house. Renting in the privately-owned sector is very expensive. But buying isn’t always beneficial either, because of the new mortgage rules in The Netherlands. Nowadays, people who get a mortgage have to completely repay within 30 years. This leads to a monthly increase in costs. Buying or renting Are you renting a house at this moment? Then this might be the right moment to buy a house. The low mortgage interest and house prices glance, while the rent is increasing. On the other side the decreasing house prices lead to uncertainty. Will they drop even further, and is now the right time to buy? Before making a decision, it is useful to take a look at the pros and cons. Which aspects are important for you? By carefully considering your wishes, you will discover what fits you best. Pros and cons of buying a house There are advantages and disadvantages when buying a house. An advantage of buying a house is the fact that you can reconstruct an furnish the house to your own wishes. You also build your own equity and when you completely repaid your mortgage the house will be yours. But there are also a couple of disadvantages. By moving, you have to arrange a lot financially. You also are responsible for the maintenance of the house and the costs will be higher because of the extra insurances and taxes. If you are sure of staying in the same place for a long period of time, then buying might be the best option.

GLOW / Galerie Jan ssen Jan van Munster At Strijp S during GLOW S a Light and Warmth installation will be presented in the Veemgebouw. This exhibition is realised by the Light Art Centre, the new foundation that initiates exhibitions with the Light art collection of Eindhoven in which also Jan van Munster’s work is presented. (Glow 9.11-16.11.13) Light is essential in the work of Jan van Munster. For him light is a medium to express the idea of his work. Contents and emotions are essential, because the light is his work is treated and used as a form of energy. Energy is the source of works in which movement, magnetism, heat, cold and electricity are the central theme, especially because of their polar tension, visible in the plus minus, the positive and negative, the light and the dark. Finally the effect is the decisive concept. www.galeriejanssen.nl

This is the first time that the festival will also take place in Eindhoven. It takes place in three cities including Eindhoven. During the three-day festival, daytime makers and studios talk about the story behind their creation; the ideas and concepts, the creative process, limits of yourself or the client and what you can learn from a failed pitch. All of this, of course, is accompanied by beautiful visuals. You will also find the latest in the field of: moving image: film, graphic design, character design, games, animation and everything in between. job here. Can you tell me about the origins of the Expat Center? There was a great need to reduce the administrative burden that comes with a migration for both the migrants and international employers. The municipalities of Eindhoven and Tilburg, the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), Midpoint Brabant, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the province of North Brabant and Brainport Development all jumped on board and became the founding fathers of the Expat Center. The Expat Center currently has a partnership between 23 Brabant and Limburg municipalities, the provinces of North Brabant and Limburg, the IND and Brainport Development. In the future we would like to expand into 35 municipalities to increase the reach of our target group to 75%. But what does the Expat Center do? We, the region, want the Expat Center to be attractive for international business and foreign talent. Formalities should be 9

the surveys, we will ask questions about various issues to which our participants can answer anonymously. Think of questions about the quality of service in the region, the satisfaction with the available housing and public transportation. We are also active on social media, which has been deemed to be very satisfying by the responses. Our website has about 15,000 unique hits per month. Does one expat adjust easier than the other? Generally, you can’t say much about this. Both the cultural and language differences play a major role. Furthermore, it differs from person to person and linked to their family situation. Expats whose partner has found their rhythm here and whose children have made friends probably adapt easier than an expat who comes home to a homesick family every day. You work closely with various governments. How is that cooperation going? Local and provincial governments think very cooperatively. Of the national politics, I hope that they continue on their journey of easing the procedures and further digitalization. It would also be appropriate in the light of all internationalization, that from the national government, structural financial support is given for the Expat Center. So now, does the expat or the employer pay for you services? The services of the expat center are free to businesses; the participating municipalities, provinces, and the IND fund it. The companies pay fees to the IND for the products that are taken away from the expat. For the expat it is free. The Expat Center Amsterdam charge, like I said before, commercial service providers with whom we have a partnership, pay us a fee, which we invest back in exposure we organize for them. How many expats do you help? On an annual basis, about 1200 formalities, about 100 a month. This includes all the family members, so a married expat with three children counts as five. Last August we provided 160 people with our services. This is right before the academic school year, which is the busiest time of the year. Do you have a vision for the future? In addition to expanding public services, we would also like to broaden the source of information for agencies dealing with expats. There is also an extensive ambition of adding public services and target groups and to further spread our services geographically. If you are an international, please sign up for the e-panel! Sint-Nicolaas Throughout the Netherlands, it is one big festival. But why? And how did Sinterklaas become of existence? Sinterklaas was formerly known as St. Nicholas and he originated from Myra (Turkey), where he was the bishop and seen as a patron. In the year 343, St. Nicholas passed away and was buried in Myra (Italy). Later his resting place moved to Bari. From this rest place he became more popular as the tales of his generosity spread through out Western Europe. 14

Week 2013 as a whole. “Ode to the City ‘connects the presentations in the Klokgebouw with other exhibitions and events in Eindhoven which together make the Dutch Design Week. You can entertain yourself for hours here. Agri meets Design During the DDW agriculture and design unite. Designers are set to meet the challenges we face in agriculture and want to tackle them in an innovative way. Dutch design is bursting with creativity, which can be used to solve social problems. Connecting these worlds can come to beautiful solutions. Part of the program is the Agri meets Design Showcase. This exhibition provides an overview of special projects in which farmers and designers work together. With a draft they reply on social issues of our time. It allows designers to show their contribution to the sustainability of agriculture. Piet Hein Eek You can see Piet Hein Eek as the personification of design city Eindhoven. He is a designer and an entrepreneur who studied at the Design Academy. His factory at Strijp S has, since the opening in 2010, been one of the most popular locations during DDW. As an ambassador, he therefore feels the need to assist the organization in meeting the challenge formed by allowing paying, big brands to take part in DDW in a way that suits DDW. The shop is located in the Klokgebouw and is definitely worth visiting. Another place worth visiting is the Urban Shopper. The new shopping center of creative Strijp-S is the place for authentic shoppers, Small-scale initiatives, innovative concepts and challenging combinations in the field of fashion, eco design, vintage, and (urban) art have the space here. Klokgebouw The industrial building, a former Philips factory, is located in the creative ‘Strijp’ near Eindhoven. During DDW the Klokgebouw is transformed into one of the hotspots of the event and covers more than 5,000 m² of presentations. The joint presentation in Hall 2 offers a place for more than 50 emerging designers and established names. Through the presentation format, each design will be exhibited in a similar manner. Several designers, studios and collectives are also in Hall 2, through individual presentations they show their latest designs and visions. Hall 3 is devoted to more than 30 labels, studios and brands that display their latest collections in an almost fair like fashion. The art directors have created a special presentation in Hall 1,”Ode to the City’. This presentation gives an impression of Dutch Design 17

One of the most fundamental aspects of gamification is what Russian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describes as flow. Flow is that state of mind achieved when one is between boredom and anxiety. The result is, the player is so engaged in the experience, they literally lose track of time. Currently, it is the goal of every business to achieve this state of mind with their product or service. Therefore, many companies have already started incorporating gamification in to their end-product process, e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Nike+ etc. “Richard Bartle (game researcher) proves that it’s not the theme of a game that makes it fun, it’s the mechanics,” says Zichermann. “The theme is what gets you in the door and the mechanics are what keep you coming back. Businesses appealing to these game-mechanics can make their business or their product more 20

Apple is the first device to come up with a retina display on its iPhone 4. Now, manufacturers are starting to deliver OLED screens, which are thinner and give better contrast. Black is really black on these screens. The Samsung Note 3 is Samsung’s new model, which makes use of the latest OLED technology. This new technology will not only be used on tables and smartphones, but in the near future, OLED can also be found in the living room, TVs will be even thinner and colors brighter. But it doesn’t stop there, technology is always changing. The iPhone 5S is the first smartphone that has a fingerprint scanner. No longer will you need to type in your passcode to secure you information, with an easy swipe of your finger, your iPhone is unlocked. Purchase items in the App store with a single swipe. The 5S is also the first smartphone with a new type of 64-bit processor, meaning that the power of the smartphone is doubled. Soon your smartphone will be faster than your desktop at work. Julio Ghiorzi is a Brazilian artist who has been inspired by the Dutch masters of the art for years. This is Julio’s first time in the Netherlands; he is currently living in Eindhoven and has been working on his new collection for two months. We met with Julio and Bram Reijnders from gallery AbrahamArt. AbrahamArt has a very special way of working with artists. One of these amazing stories is Julio Ghiorzi from Brazil, former professor of the Art Academy. Julio is a highly skilled art theorist and maintained a very practical career. In Brazil, he exhibited in major and popular museums. Six years ago Julio’s career was booming and he was viewed as a very important artist. Sadly, his career got put on hold when he got a cerebral infarction, from which he is still recovering.. Dutch inspiration Bram:’’ we have been working together for almost ten years. He was truly a world-class artist. With what he made, he could manage the world. I dare to say it so violently. Of course his cerebral infarction was very radical. Now I asked him to come 24

Julio’s work stood still for a while because he had to recover and now, after five years, he is finally able to commit to what he loves. It means the world to him that he is able to find sources of inspiration right here in the Netherlands. We recently visited the Rijksmuseum. He burst into tears as he saw the real Vermeer for the first time. This was truly a sacred time for him,” says Bram. The cerebral infarction that Julio had gotten really influenced his life. Julio: “I never imagined that such a thing could happen to me. The fact that I can come to the Netherlands and do my work is very special and important to me.’’ This journey takes him back to a piece of the life he once had. Special technique Julio has developed many different techniques in the course of the years. In all these techniques one thing is similar: the paint does the job. For this collection Julio uses a special technique. He paints on wooden shelves with large portions of paint. Then another plank is turned over and placed on top. . Than spontaneous things happen. When the two planks are separated, two paintings will appear on both sides. This is called a twin painting. The paint merges on the other piece of wood and takes its own form.. This creates two un-identical, unique pieces. Sometimes the paintings are clear and other times the original is very blurred, but that’s what makes it so special. Adoring Eindhoven Julio is very impressed by Eindhoven. He is a very cultured man and someone who is interested in aesthetics. His experience in Eindhoven is intense and he enjoys seeing the city. ’’I like the architecture of Eindhoven, there are so many different styles. That’s really the power of the city. I am also very interested in the history of Philips, ’’says Julio. He is also very pleased with the inhabitants of Eindhoven. “In Brazil there is quite the prejudice that Europeans are very cold and aloof. But the people here are actually very receptive and warm. I think that the people are very nice.’’ 25
