WE LOVE FAILING!
That’s not a typo, although it is not entirely true. No one enjoys the feeling of disappointment that comes with failure, BUT we do enjoy the benefits of failing! The biggest reason for unpursued goals or dreams, is a deep fear of failure. A fear of letting everyone and yourself down. It’s the ego at play there. The truth is, you need to get comfortable with failing. Any life you dream of most likely does not resemble the life you currently have. That means you will have to do things you do not normally do. Maybe you need to learn a new skill, or say NO to certain people/activities, or wake up an hour or two earlier. Whatever it is, it’ll be new. So, release yourself from the pressure of getting it right on your first or second (or tenth) attempt. When you ‘fail’ at something, not only did you have enough courage to TRY in the first place, but now you have something to learn from! That’s the most important part. What lessons can you carry into your next attempt? At SDB, we believe a true failure only happens if you do not learn and simply quit. How many times have we had to change things up in our business because something didn’t
work? PLENTY. We are still learning, changing and growing. Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid of not getting up after a failure - of not trying again. Your dream/ goal is important. You have it for a reason. Don’t give up on your future self! Imagine your ideal life (your dream), and find ANY first step. Pursue it. Most likely you’ll do something wrong (you’ll fail), but you will learn from it and what you learn will send you to the next step. One day you will look around and realise that you’re living at least one of your dreams. Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Aralys and Amar are co-owners of Sweet Dreams Bakery, where Cinnarolls are baked fresh daily!

LESS MAGAZINE, MORE JOURNAL read the must-read in Brainport online!
www.eindless.nl Welcome to Eindless - the place where you get a unique perspective on this region full of innovation, technology, and cultural diversity with a fresh mix of stories, agenda, and service. The monthly magazine is published in Dutch and English and is delivered to 30,000 households in Eindhoven and the surrounding area, as well as to over 900 cultural and sports locations, businesses, entertainment venues, and campuses.
The future of Eindhoven city and region is dependent on the attraction of tech and design talent: skilled high tech manufacturing and design specialists. So to entice them to choose our city and region requires that we become noticed and appreciated. The global competition for talent is fierce and Eindhoven is a relatively small city with 245.000 inhabitants and 800.000 in the broader Brainport Eindhoven region. We are competing with the likes of Munich, Milan and even Silicon Valley for top engineering talent and designers to attract to our city. So to make the world curious about Eindhoven as a great place to work, live is the main goal and to contribute to social and technical challenges that makes people’s lives better.
To achieve this goal a long term strategy is formulated to brand and market the city and region to attract top talent in high tech and design, increase foreign direct investment and location of technology enterprises and research institutes. At the heart of the strategy is the Eindhoven brand, a symbol of energy. It is a dynamic brand that belongs to the city. The ‘vibes’ from the brand logo

Eindhoven Airport
Do as the Dutch do:

to the airport Would Eindhoven Airport be the most bike-friendly airport out there? We sure try to be. The Netherlands is a 10
cycling country. Bikes really are full-fledged means of transport to the Dutch. Where we hear some internationals referring to bikes as a way to exercise or to relax in nature, we bike to work, get groceries, pick up the kids from school – one in the front and one in the back – and we even move some furniture every now and then. So biking to the airport is also normal to us. We dare you to try and think you will love it too.
First of all, Eindhoven Airport is located not too far

Dutch Fashion Being a columnist is a state of mind always looking out for new topics. Every event or meeting can provide inspiration. So when I walked into the Fe+Male Tech Heroes red carpet event, I was hoping for that lightbulb moment. And there it was, my next topic: The Dutch and Fashion.
An American colleague finished this off by admitting she never really dressed up anymore, like she did when she lived in the States. Meaning/implying: ever since she married a Dutch man. Auch! We heard you, ladies. Guilty as charged. We are practical people. We adapt to the wind and the rain and we dress sensibly. We ride our bikes and wear appropriate clothes. I am told, dress up more often than we do. When a colleague from Ireland said: “I am never badly dressed in the Netherlands” I immediately interpreted this comment as “I could not possibly dress worse than the average Dutch person”. My Dutch sense of humor appreciated the hilarious observation. She hit a national blind spot.

LEARN DUTCH INTENSIVELY ALONGSIDE YOUR WORK
Have you heard that you should come to ‘the Nuns of Vught’ if you want to learn Dutch really well? Regina Coeli is the language institute when it comes to learning languages in a short time. The institute is founded by the Sisters of the Holy Order of St. Augustine. You can follow intensive language training at our institute in Vught, but you can also join one of our training courses in Eindhoven. These small-group lessons are for people with an international background—a wonderful opportunity to learn or improve your Dutch! With our courses, you can easily learn Dutch alongside your work. And thanks to the different entry levels, you can map out your own learning trajectory. A MANAGEABLE WORKLOAD Our courses in Eindhoven last six weeks, with two 2-hour meetings each time. You also do homework (3 to 4 hours a week) and put the language into practice. In combination with your work, it is an intensive programme, but with the help of our language trainers, you’ll surely do well! LEARN STEP-BY-STEP If you want to keep learning after a course, you can take next one. Each follows seamlessly on from the one before. At least, it does when you’ve done your homework like you’re supposed to... IN SHORT Dutch for internationals at 4 different levels Small groups of approximately 4 people 6 weeks of 2 evening lessons a week of 2 hours each Led by a native speaker Training in the Vitality Hub on the High Tech Campus (HTC 85)

Spreek je Nederlands?
But what about the language? Simple! Turns out that the Dutch not only love to speak English but are really good at it. Not that they will admit it. Oh,

So, you’ve taken the plunge and moved to the Netherlands, that small country sandwiched between Germany and Belgium; land of the clog-wearing giants who eat cheese by the cow load and smoke funny smelling cigarettes. An idyllic landscape chock-a-block full of windmills, canals and maniacal people on pushbikes. Well, that’s the usual story anyway, only some of which you may find to be true...
no sirreee. After protesting that they are “Not very good at English’’, the Dutch will proceed to hold court with a mastery of the English language that would put most native English speakers to shame. Fantastic! So, what’s the problem then? Well, I’ve been trying to learn Dutch. Oh dear. I made a promising start and quickly learnt some simple sentences. I was pleased to find that there was even a lot of similarity between Dutch and English. For example, “Ik eet brood” means “I eat bread.” Not so different. So far so simple. Unfortunately, once I really got stuck in, it appeared that the grammatical construction of Dutch sentences is similar to putting all the words in a bag, mixing them up and using whatever word order that happens to be randomly drawn out – as long as you put the verb at the end - except when it’s not. This makes reading and writing Dutch tricky... but not impossible. With a little practice, and a few reads of easy short stories thrown in for good measure, I was definitely making headway in my understanding, and the mixed-salad construction of Dutch sentences was beginning to look a little less messy.

Be very careful if you find yourself asking an estate agent to help you find a rented house... but I’ll leave you to work that one out. So, what can I conclude from all this? It’s a very tricky language with many rules and even more exceptions to the rules. Even the Dutch are confused... maybe that’s why they like speaking English so much!
And why are all the most useful phrases so difficult to pronounce? “Graag gedaan” (you’re welcome),

Godrive - the car subscription for expats 1
Convenience: With a car subscription, expats are relieved from concerns about purchasing, maintaining, and selling a car. Everything is taken care of, including insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance.
2
Flexibility: As an expat, obtaining and disposing of a car can be challenging due to potential short-term residency permits. A car subscription allows usage while in the country and easy cancellation upon departure.
3
Cost-Efficiency: Instead of a substantial upfront investment in buying a car, a car subscription offers the advantage of monthly payments. This can be more economical, particularly if the need for a car is temporary.
4
Variety of Choice: Car subscriptions provide options to select from various models and brands based on individual needs and preferences.
5
Maintenance and Repair-Free: The car subscription package includes maintenance and repairs, sparing subscribers from unexpected costs and the time spent arranging these services.
6
Additional Services: godrive.nu offers supplemental services like breakdown assistance, alternative transport, and insurance. Especially helpful for newcomers unfamiliar with local roads and procedures.
7
Sustainability: godrive.nu also offers electric cars, enabling expats to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
8
Hassle-Free Resale: Unlike owning a car, there’s no need to worry about reselling with a car subscription when leaving the country.
9
Quick Availability: Many car subscription services can provide a car within a few days upon request, a convenient option for those in urgent need of a vehicle.
10
Transparency: With a car subscription, monthly costs are clearly outlined, eliminating unexpected expenses such as repairs or insurance, which subscribers would otherwise have to cover themselves.

Tips for Extroverts Being extroverted is valuable in our always-on business world. The push toward collaboration, connection, and getting in front of audiences all require you to speak up and be seen—two things extroverts are great at. It can be easy to get caught up in the rush of making your way around the room and talking to everyone you can. When I accompanied my spouse across the Atlantic to the Netherlands for his work, little did I know that my life would be on the brink of transformation. Let me explain. From being a busy physician, I moved to embracing slow living with my young children and I put my free hours into exploring my creativity. I began with my two passions, writing and tending to plants, and I found myself drawn to creating plant terrariums. It gave me so much joy and fulfillment that I had an epiphany and I knew I wanted to carve a life of creativity and fulfilling work. So, when I saw the call for submissions for “Start Her Up”, a program by International Creative Women in collaboration with Gemeente Eindhoven, I felt as if the universe was giving me a sign to bring my dream into reality. Applying to it was a wonderful decision.
In this program, I met 14 other women who had come to the Netherlands, leaving their flourishing careers in their respective countries and looking to begin again or pivot into different careers. As we, women, know all too well, it is really hard to establish oneself in a new country that speaks a different language, and a lack of network makes it more difficult. Within this program, I felt a sense of camaraderie with these women because although we were all from different professions, with varied experiences, from various cultural backgrounds, and with unique business proposals, we all had a common string binding us - we were all daring to carve out our paths despite the odds. This program was designed to overcome those very odds and set us up for success.
Rashmi Bhopi We had sessions about the various nuances of starting a business every Thursday and Saturday, and we spent time brainstorming with our individual and each other’s business ideas. I was amazed at the repertoire of teachers, coaches, and experienced entrepreneurs we had who were guiding us through this process of starting our businesses. Over several weeks into the program, I have progressed from simply having a hobby to now having a business model plan. I have dug deeper into understanding my customers’ pain points and every time I face a block or I am unsure of something, I go back to my “why” and my mood board. The program’s various sessions have helped me understand that the essence of any business is to have a strong sense of meaningful purpose, and that fundamentally, a business is about cultivating

Celebrating 5000 Days of Helping Internationals! By Olivia van den Broek-Neri

On 9 November 2023, my colleagues and I celebrated Holland Expat Center South’s 5000th day of helping internationals settle into Brabant! The event took place in the building of our new office: Succeed Offices. It was great to see so many familiar faces who have contributed to the Expat Center’s success over the years! It was also wonderful to see many new faces that have joined forces with us to help us to continue to help internationals in the region! my job! Speaking directly with the people I am working for is an important part of my job, but it is also great fun! As we swap stories about what brought us to Eindhoven and how things are going, it makes me appreciate the work that I do so much more. It also makes me realize how much we have achieved over these past 5000 days – and what a great group of people I am privileged to be able to work with! Last year provided the opportunity to attend many events – and sometimes multiple events took place on the same day and at the same time! This is a testament to the activity that is taking place in our region. Although we cannot be at more than one place at a time, it is amazing to see how much is going on and how active the different international communities are in the region.

• Finally, be aware of the impact of supportive networks. As we navigate the complexities of our lives, let us reflect on the power of open communication, the strength found in shared experiences, and the resilience that stems from understanding and supporting one another. Life After Death in 36
Epitaph of a Small Winner By Rebekah Villon
When reviewing books for HOWDO, I normally look for award winners or bestsellers or books that people are talking about, but I recently picked up this slim little volume in a used bookstore, and it is so extraordinary that I had to share it with you. Epitaph of a Small Winner (also known in English as The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas) by Machado de Assis was first published in 1880, and the specific translation I read was by William L. Grossman in 1952. However, the tone of the book is shockingly modern, with the wry self awareness and meta commentary one would expect from something written 200 years later.
The narrator of the book, Brás Cubas, is an aristocratic Brazilian, telling his life story from beyond the grave. He relates his various ambitions, affairs, and entanglements, admitting that he is somewhat vain, petty, capricious… shaped by his love for the married Virgilia and the ravings of his philosopher friend Quincas Borba, he moves through life driven by impulses and actions without commitment, and without personal consequence.
Book Review by Rebekah Villon
To tell the truth, my beliefs reflected those of a barber whom I had patronized in Modena and who was distinguished by the fact that he had no beliefs. He was the flower of the barbers. No matter how much time a haircut required, the customer was never bored, for the barber interspersed the strokes of his comb with a wealth of piquant sayings and racy jokes… he had no other philosophy. Nor did I.
“Why do you want to live longer? To continue to devour and be devoured? Are you not sated with the struggle? You have experienced again and again the least vile and least painful of my gifts: the brightness of morning, the gentle melancholy of dusk, the quietness of night, the face of the earth, and, last of all, sleep, my greatest gift to man. Poor idiot, what more do you wish?” - Machado de Assis

Now, I am a mother of a 3-year old daughter. I settled in a small village in Brabant. And as I don’t travel as much as I used to, I am really happy to be part of Eindhoven, a vibrant international city. Each time I arrive in Eindhoven, I can feel the vibe and I understand why Eindhoven attracts so many internationals.
What inspired you to take this job? Holland Expat Center warmly welcomed me last year in their team as account manager. To have the same objectives and a joint purpose which is so close to my heart, makes this more than a job. I know how lucky I am.
And every 1st Friday of the month, we organize a Welcome Evening for newly arrived internationals.
