FINE PRINT ARROW is an open forum produced by biased, twisted around, totally backward, hungering judges who wouldn’t be able to catch a greased pig to save their lives. Remarkably enough, they all go to Renton High School at 400 S. 2nd St., Renton, WA, 98057, working with talented musicians and aspiring artists of all kinds. The editorin-chief is Joseph Varnadore. You can contact him at 425-306-6811.

ARROW is printed eight times a year by Pacific Publishing Company in Seattle, Washington. Word processing, graphics and layouts are created on Microsoft Office 2007 and Adobe Creative Suite 3 programs. ARROW has a press run of 2,000. The staff welcomes letters to the editor and will publish letters which meet our standards of good taste (as space permits). Letters must be signed. ARROW reserves the right to edit letters, though every attempt will be made to preserve original content. Unsigned

editorials and editorial cartoons represent the majority view of ARROW editorial board and do not represent the views of the Renton School District or RHS. Opinions, commentaries, satires, and perspectives are the views of the writers and artists, not the Renton School District or ARROW editorial board. ARROW is financed by advertising based on size-determined rates. These range from $20-$80.

Everybody recorded at the same place, but not with each other. Then one day, Janile Mundy, Dominic Sampson, Anthony Hill and Devante Swan recorded together. They realized that everything they did went together. They felt that they went through the same experiences. The purpose of the song is to show their motivation to get their name out into the world.

I live off of music, like camping and long walks on the beach. I and my ex had broken up, and I found happiness through writing music and rapping. We got back together, and she said I would never be a good rapper. Not a good voice. Said I was a bad rapper, so I got better. Keeps me going.

It was easy, it just came natural. Free styling, rhyme, and incorporating punch lines was just easy for me. The song “Running Rebel” came from a bunch of my freestyles put together. I have a CD coming on June 29th called “Rounds with Demons.” I enjoy rapping because it’s a huge way to express myself without hurting anybody else, and it becomes something funny.

I was bored one day and I went to my friend’s house and I read a book called “The Giving Tree.” Since it was a children’s book my friend laughed at me, so he told me to man up and become a thug. So he played a song by Waka Flocka, and I thought to myself “I can do that.” I went on Youtube and searched up “how to rap.” The results I found motivated me to become a rapper. So then I called my dad and told him I was a thug and I’ve become a rapper.

I really love learning about music; it makes me feel like a different person and I would like to get out of high school and keep studying music. My hobbies beside music are mostly technology and mostly playing Xbox-360, but most of all I spend my time writing poetry with the spare time I have after playing video games.

As my father tells it, he sang to me every day until I started singing back. Now the only problem is getting me to stop. I picked up a guitar at 14 and discovered songwriting. I write about the places I live, the people I fall in mutual weirdness with, or decidedly don’t, the weather, gas prices, and the small pieces of my dreams I still remember by the time I can get to my notebook in the morning. I’m living in Juneau, Alaska now and working on my first album.

When I shut my eyes, I’m reminded of another world inside me. It’s much larger than the earth. The lands I travel to are the past and my imagination. But there’s treasures littered everywhere, some hidden, others out in the open. Each is very precious. In this place, there’s no such thing as trash because all memories and creations are important. Even if they hurt, I want to remember them all; I want to. R

IN HER WORDS: I love to sleep and listen to K-Pop, and I am obsessed with walking. My favorite class is World History, Math being second place after it. When I was writing this piece I was homesick. I was just remembering my childhood in Bacninh, Vietnam. I miss being there and realized that back then I didn’t appreciate the memories, but now I’m older I realize I do.

This man is amazing. He can do everything from breaking ankles to hitting someone hard. He’s the total package. Out of all the skillful things he can do, he’s mainly known for one thing, and that’s running remarkably lightly on his extremely quick feet. As everyone goes through the stepping rope (where you step between the ropes shaped as squares) they’re not going through it fluently; they’re all tripping up or falling on their hands and knees. [TAYLOR FERRIS] Dear Employees at Traditional Macho Men: Please keep in mind that by the time you are 29 years old we will have to let you go. You have the rest of your life ahead of you and we do not wish to hold you and your capabilities back any longer. We value each and every one of you. For some of you, your birthday may be approaching rather fast; the rest of you still have plenty of time. No matter what the case may be, you should be making the most of your time here with your family by selling the company’s name to consumers. Those of you who will be leaving us soon: we hope you will come by frequently since this is your home. Sincerely, Management [JENYCE STROY]

I wish my mom and dad were here with me on my 15th birthday.

It’s a special day that shows I have grown older. Thanks for being here all the first 14 years of my life. In one of those birthdays with no friends - just you and a cake - I felt happier than this year without you guys. I miss you a lot, and I hope you guys are here next year. I want to tell you that I love you and I will always love you. Today’s my birthday and I want to promise that I will study hard and make you guys proud of me. I am proud that you guys are my parents. [SIRISAWAN SYLUANGKHOT] Money is important in my life. Money is the thing that I have been utilizing everyday. People can earn from their abilities and can survive for their whole lives. One of the most general things is money can show in the appearance of every individual person. This shows that money is the most important thing people exchange to have things and benefits, and demand respect, which everyone obviously wants to have. Honestly, physical things come from money. Money appears everywhere; it is proof that I became a successful person. For my experiences, I already knew how to use money in a good way or not. Money is the best thing I could see to make my life even better than before. [HA LE] She is the kind of friend I can never replace; she’s been through thick and thin with me. She helps me with my problems and she also puts a smile on my face when I have a bad day. I love her for who she is. I could say that she is a true friend of mine who is always in my heart. However the unimaginable thing happened: she died early with the cancer at the age of thirteen. We were supposed to graduate in elementary together but it didn’t happen. Because she’s gone. And it’s really hard to accept the truth that she has passed away, but for her own happiness I will let her go. I’m still keeping her memories everywhere I go. [SUNSHINE BACUS] He rips out the ad and puts it in his jacket pocket. He eats a dinner of congee and pulled pork with soy sauce. This time he poured too much soy sauce. He takes the bottle and turns it to the nutrition facts. [CINDY THAI NGUYEN] Love is not just a word; love is a thing that happens between two people. You can love what you want, like families and friends, animals and things. My friends says, “I like that person” and I say “You love? Or like?” My friend says, “Love-love. I like how he acts, how he smiles, how he laughs.” I said, “You are crazy.” She said, “You’re still young. When you grow up, you will know what love is.” Then I knew it was love, not just for a boy or a girl, for anybody. I’ve seen a lot of people who love each other and they get mad. They don’t know each other anymore. A love song is just a caress set to music. So we would see who we love, so we don’t hurt all the time. My Dad always says, “Don’t waste your time on love. Let the love come to you. Don’t run to it or it will run away from you. Love is like a war: easy to begin but hard to end.” I remember my first day in high school. I was fourteen and saw a lot of girls older than me who had boyfriends. I was a kid. I didn’t understand what love meant. They called me and said, “Oh girl, don’t you have a boyfriend?” I said “Who needs a boyfriend?” They laughed at me and said, “Oh kids, never mind.” [FADUMO HASHI] When I think about it / I sometimes have hope / But other times, I just don’t / You think about the reality of it all / And based on the past / All you do is fall / It’s never been different / Any other way / The process just repeats every single day / It never changes / It stays the same / And you just wish and wish for a change / But no / That is not the exchange / The process just continues / And then you just don’t know what to do / You wish for something real / That’s all you’ve ever wanted / But you’ll soon realize / Something real does not exist. The typical 2 Life isn’t a bundle mom who of fun. It’s hard work and dedication to what collects the you have. Everyone in this world has their groceries, own wings and yet some people still take advantage of other’s. Life is never fair, and carpools for to be able to survive we have to do what we children and can, speak up and live how we want. We can’t trust many people, but we can love a lot. has lunch Those who you think you can trust are really meetings is finally able those you can’t. There are many secrets one to express herself before having to deal with her ordinary routine. She is in control. She strives to treat her family well. Each 340 ml can bring a symphony that takes her along the journey of her daily routine. Her sleepless nights have been swept away. The strands of hair draping off to the side of her forehead and the crinkled workout tank does not bother her in anyway. She is too focused on how her body is controlling her mentally. Her thoughts have led to prosperity. Thinking positively has made a difference every day. If she continues to be optimistic, life will flash by her eyes with a smile. But by stretching and relaxing herself she is clearly neglecting the need of her family, which is awfully selfish.

person can have, and there are many things you don’t know about that person. Everyone has more than one face. They can even have three. They are the type of people I wonder about the most because their lives are so interesting. It makes you wonder what’s going through their minds. What they’ve been doing in their lives. Life is more fun when you’re weird because when you’re weird it shows you’re different than others. It shows what you’re capable of doing. Everyone has a story that has all these secrets that will never be told, and everyone has those stories that people will never live or hear. Sometimes you may be scared of what the future brings. I know I am. When I think about the future I wonder who I will become, who I’m with, and what I’m going to do. I realize that I shouldn’t keep thinking about it, or else I will stress out more, so it’s best.

I flip through the pages of a magazine seeing pictures of males with the perfect bodies and I guess I just get jealous

I can’t explain why it’s just an envious feeling Advertisements for women that are all related to the outer appearance like clothes fragrances make-up etc. are not even comparable to those that are found in magazines intended for the male audience compare a magazine that is specifically intended for the female audience to a magazine that is intended for the male audience there is such a big difference in the content of both magazines look at a magazine that is for guys and you are mostly going to see it filled with articles relating to cars sports politics economy and all of those topics men find interesting while the women see them as dull and boring. Is it the influence of the media or is society too gullible?A feminine viewer with low self-esteem (self-image) might look at this advertisement and be influenced by what she sees, thinking that if she had that tight outfit and those red velvet heels that are designed to captivate the attention of the public, then why not purchase them? Why not be called beautiful and “hot” again even if its fake beauty? All that matters is evading the ridiculing jokes that society has embedded in their minds due to their unattractive appearance, right?Does Morality matter? Do advertisers care?

I ran across the street and onto the sidewalk, I ran all the way to Safeway.

I ran across the street and onto the sidewalk. I ran all the way to Safeway. Frazzled, I walked quickly down the aisles. I needed chips. I grabbed three and rushed over to the self-checkout area. Beeep. Beeep. “Unexpected item in the bagging area. Remove this item.” GAH. SHUT UP, MACHINE. $11.98?! For chips?! What even!? Forget it. I’ll just get two. I clicked cancel. Then cancel all. The machine started flipping out and making all kinds of sounds. I stared at it in horror. What? I don’t have time for this! I turned to see a little old lady staring at me in disbelief. I looked back at her puzzled. She looked to an orange sign taped right above the screen of the checkout machine. “WARNING! PLEASE DO NOT PRESS CANCEL ALL. CLICK HELP.” Oh. “You must go to Renton High School, huh?” She looked at me, frowning. “Yeah.” I answered without thinking. She scoffed, shook her head, and walked away looking disgusted. It was only seconds after I uttered that single yeah when I finally understood what she meant. Ouch. It’s people like that checkout lady who anger me so much. People like her who make my insides churn and make my head itch. She’s an ignorant and closed minded person. She will never truly see beauty in things. Amazing people will pass her by and she won’t even know it. I mean, yes, I understand you’re irritated at me for not reading the obvious highlighter orange sign right above the screen. It’s my fault. Alright, go ahead and get mad at me. But to hold the school responsible for my mistakes? No. I cannot stand that. You don’t hold a whole group of people responsible for one or two’s mistakes. That’s wrong. That’s unjustified. That’s not even logical. I mean, how does that explain my mistake? It doesn’t. I should’ve just agreed and told her: Yes, that’s definitely the reason I made a mistake. Everything is just so much clearer; I’m dumb because I go to Renton High. But that’s not true at all. After I walked back to the ARROW room and let all my frustration out, I felt better. I’m proud to say that RHS is a great school filled with diverse, strong, and wonderful people. You can go ahead and have your opinions. You can go ahead and sit in your pool of hate. But just so you know: You’re not going anywhere. So Miss-Grumpy-Checkout-Lady, YOU have a nice day.

For a freshman English Greek mythology unit, Maria Caoagdan created a small box theater with turning panels in the front. This box tells the story of the creation of winter. Several panel slides have been selected and featured below.

Demeter, the goddess of the crops and harvest, and Zeus, the king of the gods, had a daughter Persephone.

This necklace my father gave to me when I came to the U.S. The sides of the locket say, ‘love you forever’. The locket’s color is silver and it’s a beautiful locket. When I wear that necklace I feel calm and happy. The locket lays down on my chest and sometimes I touch it to remember my father. Also that necklace is the prettiest thing ever that my father gave to me. [SUMAYA DAUD]

IN HER WORDS: Since I’m such a perfectionist, I’ve decide to exceed expectations. I taught myself to draw. Basically, I’ve been drawing ever since I was still in the Philippines, ever since my mom bought my paper and art supply. And anime airs a lot there. First anime I watched was Pokémon, but Pokémon was not really my favorite. So that’s where I got my idea for anime. Even after I migrated to America when I was seven, I never stopped my passion for creativity. Throughout the years, I’ve improved greatly in my art, became more detailed. I use a lot of references. I observe a lot of everyday activities and motion. I’ve been committed to drawing.

One day, while Persephone was gathering wild flowers, she was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld where the dead live.

141516 ARROW On Fridays and celebration days we go to the mosque. A mosque is a place all Muslim people pray at. When we are praying we need to wear a casual cloth that the Muslim people only wear, and it is for men. You have to wear that when you are going to pray because you get a lot of confidence and you focus on what you are doing. The dress is long and it could be any color, and the one I had was white. It is supposed to cover you except your neck to your head and the front of your hands. Sometimes when we come from the mosque and we are heading home people look at us as if we are different people and try to make fun of us and how we are dressed. Many people try to let it go but they can’t because it is too hard for them. People think that they could do anything to someone who is different and can’t stand for himself. Sometimes it goes farther and farther and the bullied person tries to quit his religion. What could be worse if someone pushes someone else so many times that they quit the thing their life was all about? To be a good man you need to be good, trustworthy, forgiving, have patience and do what’s good for your life. Once I was the one who tried to not wear the long dress but I let it go and did not listen to those who judged men and what they were. It is good not to quit on yourself. I learned that many people are judged on what they look like and how they dress. One day I was the one who tried not to be himself. I felt bad about it but I didn’t want to be a nothing who can’t stand for himself. I fought with them until they gave up and then I learned something that I never thought I would’ve learned, and that’s how I feel about it. [ABDIRAHMAN A. MOHAMED]

While Persephone is in the underworld, her mother mourns and refuses to allow crops to grow until she gets her daughter back again. Helios, the god The resulting famine of the sun, told threatened the extinction Demeter who of the human race. So had abducted her Zeus sent Hermes down to daughter. Demeter Hades to make him release went to Zeus for his Persephone. help, who refused, so Demeter withdrew from her role as goddess, and without her no crops could grow.

Hades grudgingly agreed, but before she went back he gave Persephone a pomegranate with a unique power.

When she ate the fruit, Persephone was bound to the underworld forever, and was required to remain there, as the wife of Hades for a part of the year.

One and the Same So tell me what’s beautiful

The ones that make me who I am

Is it her? Is it me?

Yet we’re one and the same

The shape of her eyes

Judged by society on the daily

The curve of my smile

Scored according to these made up rules

Is it the make-up that makes her more appealing?

A double zero here, a fourteen there

My plainness that makes me more approachable?

Why do we have to be different?

The curves I’ll never have

Look at her smile, her personality, her charm

The compliments I’ll never hear

Isn’t it just as beautiful?

Tell me why

As beautiful on the fourteen as on the double zero

Why don’t I have what she has?

So tell me now

I’ll tell you, I don’t want it.

What’s beautiful?

She’ll never have the imperfections
