HOWTO

Fill 2 ounce mixing jar halfway (approx. 1 oz) with Part A Solution packaged in dropper bottle. All of Part A will be utilized; your jar should be empty after dispensing.

Remove cap of Part B Solution and pour solution into 2 oz. mixing jar until the jar is full of both solutions. Shake well before emptying.

With included brush, mix the solutions together until it becomes the consistency of shaving cream.

Allow tape to dry 30-45 seconds.

Run the tape under cold sink water (very light stream from the faucet) until all of the solution is completely washed off. You can also rinse the tape off in a bowl filled with cold water.

Let the tape dry for 2-3 minutes by holding tape vertically to allow water to drip down tape. This will help avoid water spots after drying that can interfere with print examination.

Using the included brush, apply the mixed Liquid Powder to the back of the adhesive tape thoroughly and carefully until the entire sample is covered.

TECHNOTE For enhanced ridge detail, use an alternate light source. White or UV lights have captured the best results depending on the color of tape. For black tape, use white oblique (parallel to the floor) lighting. A UV-532nm range light may be used to enhance print detail.

Our latent print reference pads create perfect, consistent test latent fingerprints again and again. Simply press your finger on the desired pad and the perfect amount of latent print residue is left behind. Latent print development techniques can then be accurately tested and gauged based on this reference standard, regardless of who placed the print.

ThermaNin is a ninhydrin derivative for developing fingerprints on thermal paper. Regular ninhydrin and DFO solutions are either based on polar solvents (like acetone or ether) or contain them. These turn the top (active) layer of thermal paper gray or black. Research has found that hemiketals of ninhydrin are soluble in petroleum ether (or other apolar solvents like pentane, heptane) without the need for addition of polar solvents. ThermaNin develop fingerprints on thermal paper without darkening of the surface.

The classic method for developing latent prints on paper and other porous objects.

This is an aerosol formulation of Ninhydrin. Simply spray NIN-Print on the evidence you wish to process and allow it to air dry in a fume hood or under controlled conditions. Latent prints may take a few days to fully develop, but prints may begin to appear after a few hours. All Ninhydrin solutions should be used with proper respiratory protection or in a fume hood. Convenient and easy to use and it will not run inks. Does not contain acetic acid and evaporates very fast.

The Sudan Black method of fingerprint development relies upon the presence of oils and other sebaceous materials present in latent prints. One of the best methods you can use on greasy or waxy nonporous surfaces such as glass, metal, milk cartons, interiors of gloves, and candles. The resulting print development is a dark blue black.

Fuming Vehicle Interiors: Seal the vehicle from outside air and place three to four packets in different locations inside the car. Warm the vehicle interior by parking the car in sun or turning on the heat. Next, add humidity with a Portable Humidifier (A-2617C). Allow the vehicle interior to fume for 20 minutes to a few hours. After development, reseal packets and ventilate vehicle. Then, photograph developed prints, dust and lift. Rooms or areas that can be closed off should be processed in a similar manner.

LumiCyano™ The Cyanoacrylate Fuming Method is a well-tried and tested means of developing latent fingerprints. It has proved its worth countless times as an effective tool for professional investigators. However, one of the drawbacks with the ‘super glue method’ is that the final image obtained is not always easy to photograph. Since the chemical deposits left after reaction are white, there may not be sufficient contrast for an effective photograph to be taken if the surface they are on also happens to be white. To overcome this, forensic scientists employ dusting or dye staining using different colors. Currently, a process requiring two distinct technical phases is employed: first the glue fumes reveal the print, then colorants (via sprinkling or bathing or the like) or powders are applied to make the print stand out against its background. Such a process multiplies contamination risks which is costly in terms of product, equipment and the application of colorants and powders may not always be compatible with DNA-search and demands strict hygiene and a high level of security. In addition, this process has two major draw-backs: it can only reveal prints in reduced or enclosed spaces and it does not work for prints left on hard surfaces. Lumicyano™ is a fluorescent cyanoacrylate. Instead of using the classical superglue with colorants, Lumicyano™ is a superglue to which a new component has been added so as to obtain fluorescent fumes. Its chemical makeup emits a ”cyanoacrylate fluorescent fume” during the fuming process, clearly and sharply defining the latent fingerprint in yellow under UVa-light in the 315-400 nm and forensic light 425-530nm wavelength bands. Storage & Shelf Life Keep the product out of light and store in a cool and dry place, at a constant temperature to prevent moisture building up inside of the bottle. INTRODUCTION TO FINGERPRINTING

Fingerprints are made up of tiny lines known as friction ridges. These lines form patterns such as arches, loops and whorls. These ridge patterns are used to classify fingerprints. In addition, small details are found in each fingerprint known as minutiæ. These minutiæ are used for fingerprint identification. When fingerprints are properly recorded these minutiæ are easily recognizable. However, when fingerprints are smeared or smudged the minutiæ may not be recognizable, rendering the fingerprints unreadable and causing your cards to be rejected. It is important that fingerprints be rolled properly. A complete fingerprint is rolled from fingernail to fingernail and only in one direction, covering the area of the finger from near the tip to just below the first joint.

A standard 1O-print fingerprint card requires two types of prints, rolled and flat. Rolled are Used in the first two rows and the flat prints are used on the bottom row. Examples below represent a correct and incorrect rolled print (see figure 1) as well as a correct and incorrect flat print (see figure 2). Before fingerprinting, the Subject should wash and dry their hands thoroughly. This can be accomplished with soap and water or using ID Kleen towelettes. If the individual has excessively moist or dry calloused fingers, a Pre Print towelette may be used to remove excess moisture and soften the skin on the fingers, improving the friction ridge detail. DO NOT use lotions or moisturizers on the skin prior to fingerprinting. A fingerprint cardholder should be used to hold the fingerprint card in place during fingerprinting. A magnifier may be used to examine a rolled or flat fingerprint for quality and clarity once an individual has been fingerprinted.

APPLYing INK Always begin with the thumb on the subject’s right hand. Extend the thumb away from the body. Make sure the rest of the fingers are out of the way. Firmly grasp the thumb at the base and coat it evenly by rolling the fingers across the pad, from the tip below the first joint. Coat the finger from nail edge to nail edge. It is not necessary to push the finger into the ink. You are simply trying to coat the thin friction ridges on the surface of the finger. It is recommended that each individual finger is inked and then rolled. If all the fingers are first inked, there is a chance the finger may contact the card as it is curled out of the way before rolling.

When rolling fingerprints, you should always roll from an uncomfortable position to a comfortable one. Thumbs should begin rolling from the far edge of the thumb and roll inward toward the center of the body. Fingers are rolled away from the center of the body (see figure 4). Place the finger over the appropriate block on the fingerprint card. Be sure to place each fingerprint in the proper box. With even pressure, press the finger against the card and roll it in the same direction that the finger was inked. Roll the finger completely from side to side and lift off quickly in one continuous outward movement (see figure 5). Remember, always roll from an uncomfortable position to a comfortable one. Once the right hand is complete, lift the arm on the fingerprint cardholder and slide the card up so that the blocks for the fingers of the left hand are visible through the cardholder window. Firmly close the arm, locking the card into place and roll the fingers of the left hand, beginning with the thumb. Remember, thumbs are rolled in toward the body. The other fingers are rolled away from the body. After you have created rolled fingerprints from both of the subjects hands, the bottom of the fingerprint card must be completed with the ‘flat prints. Lift the lid of the cardholder and position the card so that the eight flat print boxes are visible through the cardholder Window. Close the lid, locking the card in place.

Ergonomics Placement of the pad and recording surface should be at the edge of the table, desk, stand, or countertop to make access to them by fingers easier and to prevent the adjacent fingers from getting in the way of the finger being printed. The furniture top must be smooth, flat, hard, leveled, and secure. The correct finger posture is easiest to obtain when the forearm is parallel to the ground. The forearm in this position will also make rolling the fingers easier. Be sure to place both the pad and recording surface at the proper elevation and use a fingerprinting stand if necessary (see figure 3).

Flat Fingerprints Flat prints are done in finger groups; the thumb and then four fingers simultaneously. Flat prints are not rolled, but are pressed directly down against the card. Flat prints are used to determine how an individuals fingerprints look in relation to each other. With the four fingers of the left hand extended, lightly press them on the inking surface with gentle pressure on the back of the fingers. Repeat the process on the inking finger block on the fingerprint card, pressing straight down on the card and then lifting straight up (see figure 6A). It may be necessary to place the fingers in the block on an angle, depending on how long the fingers are (see figure 6B). Then, with the left thumb of the subject extended, lightly press the thumb flat on the inking surface. Do not roll the thumb. Then place the thumb on the thumb block of the card. Repeat this process with the fingers and thumb of the right hand.

Q: Can I capture an image of a curved surface with the CrimeCam? Yes. Our patented multi-frame integration feature, equipped in our live view image capturing software, allows the user to control the aperture and exposure settings to set the light brightness just right. After the light setting is accurate, the user can then paint the surface area with the light allowed into the camera, using either an automatic integration or a one-frame integration button. This is not a “stitching” method piecing together separate files; it simply captures one image and one file using the custom light settings you choose on the camera and software. Q. Does the CrimeCam picture look green or grainy when viewing? No. There are key components removed from the older RUVIS technology that allows our camera to view and capture a much higher resolution, which removes the “night-vision” like green image examiners are used to seeing when operating in the 254nm short-wave UV range.

Q. What size surface can I view and capture? That all depends on the camera distance from the working surface. To meet the minimum AFIS latent print database resolution requirement, the image needs to be 1,000 pixels per inch. Our camera can capture up to 2,500 pixels per inch, and can easily meet the AFIS requirement of 1,000 pixels per inch capturing an image at 4’’x4.’’ The higher the camera is from the working surface, the lower the resolution. When screening for GSR, blood spatter, questioned documents, foot and tire impressions, etc. the resolution is still very high, and the image size is around 10’’x7’’ when the camera is 18’’ from the working surface. Q. Is the angle of the light important when capturing untreated fingerprints with UV light? Yes. It’s so important that we want the examiner to be free in moving the light sources at their discretion. There are some illumination angles of incidence that will not allow the user to see evidence. For example, the UV light will absorb into the evidence less when the angle of the light is inaccurate, making the background appear. When the angle is right, the UV light will absorb into the evidence, eliminating the background when using short wave UV light. Q. What is the resolution of the image captured with the CrimeCam? The camera itself is a 16mp camera, but megapixel can be marketed in deceiving ways. The imaging sensor inside any camera will directly affect the resolution of the image. Our proprietary, custom designed imaging sensor enables the examiner to view and capture at high resolution. Our camera is a true 16mp camera, capturing up to 2,500 pixels per inch. The output screen/viewing resolution is 4900 x 3300 pixels. The size of the file is anywhere from 15MB to 60MB, depending on the distance between the camera and the working surface. Q. What file types can I save the image as? There are three different choices: .tiff, .jpg and raw. Our software allows you to choose either a 16-bit or 8-bit image. 16-bit images have millions more shades of grey, enhancing the comparison capabilities. When capturing in shortwave, we utilize 8-bit images. Also, the camera saves two files simultaneously; one raw image to the dedicated file path the examiner sets, and one user choice file type for later enhancement. All file types are compatible with AFIS submission plug-ins and data management software. Q. How can I adjust my shutter speed, focus and aperture settings? The shutter speed is on the control panel inside the image capturing software, ranging from 0 seconds exposure to above 30 seconds. The focus is manual on the end of the 78MM lens, and the aperture, depth-of-field ranges from 3.8 to 16 and is controlled manually right above the focusing mechanism on the lens. Q. Can I submit 16-bit images into Foray Digital Workspace? Yes. Images have successfully been acquired into the Digital Workplace, displayed in the Asset Info view, Thumbnail view and Full view. Images are able to processed in Photoshop and then returned to Digital Workplace successfully with a complete audit trail and the image processing history. Images are 100% compatible with the Foray system and all of the metadata remains intact.
