Clementine is a junior in high school who seems “normal” enough: she has friends, family, and even a boyfriend. But she can’t reciprocate his feelings toward her, so she breaks up with him. When her openly gay best friend takes her to a gay bar, she becomes captivated by Emma, a punkish, confident girl with blue hair, an event that leads Clementine to discover new aspects of herself, both passionate and tragic.
Blue Is the Warmest Color is a tender,

A lively and engaging cookbook for living and eating vegan in the great outdoors.
R EL
In spring and summer, there’s nothing better than enjoying a meal outdoors with friends and family; today, al fresco dining has never been more popular, given the rise in popularity of gourmet takeout and prepared picnic baskets. For those who eschew all animal products, though, outdoor vegan meals usually consist of mundane veggie sandwiches and a fruit salad. But no more! Carla Kelly is an accomplished vegan cook and baker with two previous cookbooks under her belt; she also loves to prepare delicious, casually elegant vegan meals for backyard barbecues, picnics in the park, or parties at the beach. Vegan al Fresco is loaded with beautiful appetizers such as Peanut Potato Salad and Tomato & Olive Tarts, inventive sandwiches including the Pita Po’Boys, and amazing grilled dishes like Sweet Chipotle Tempeh with Berries, and Cedar Planked Rosemary & Lemon Tofu; finish off your meal with Strawberry & Basil Scones, Maple & Walnut Cheesecake, or some crazy good vegan ice creams. The book includes prep and cooking times for each recipe, as well as advice on portability, food safety issues, and menu suggestions for special occasions. For those with allergies, recipes that contain known allergens such as soy, nuts, and gluten are clearly marked. Full-colour throughout, Vegan al Fresco offers delectable and sophisticated ways for vegans to enjoy the great outdoors.
Carla Kelly Carla Kelly, a vegan for almost ten years, has cooked at hotels around the world. She is the author of two previous cookbooks, Quick and Easy Bake Sale and Quick and Easy Vegan Slow Cooking and operates the food website The Year of the Vegan (veganyear.blogspot.ca). She lives in Burnaby, BC.

Artists profiled in the book are from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Asia, and their crafts include knitting, crocheting, sewing, textiles, pottery, and ceramics. There’s the Brooklyn writer who creates large-scale site-specific knitted installations; the British woman who runs sewing and quilting workshops for community building and therapy; the Indonesian book maker and organizer of a DIY craft center; the Chilean arpilleristas; and the women of India’s Adithi Collective. A wonderful sense of optimism and possibility pervades the book: the inspiring notion that being crafty can really make the world a better place.

GENDER FAILURE
E
Being a girl was something that never really happened for me. —Rae Spoon Ivan E. Coyote and Rae Spoon are accomplished, award-winning writers, musicians, and performers; they are also both admitted “gender failures.” In their first collaborative book, Ivan and Rae explore and expose their failed attempts at fitting into the gender binary, and how ultimately our expectations and assumptions around traditional gender roles fail us all. Based on their acclaimed 2012 live show that toured across the US and in Europe, Gender Failure is a poignant collection of autobiographical essays, lyrics, and images documenting Ivan and Rae’s personal journeys from gender failure to gender enlightenment. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, it’s a book that will touch LGBTQ readers and others, revealing, with candour and insight, that gender comes in more than two sizes.
Ivan E.Coyote & Rae Spoon Ivan E. Coyote is the author of six story collections (including Missed Her, The Slow Fix, and the YA collection One in Every Crowd) and the award-winning novel Bow Grip, and is co-editor of the anthology Persistence: All Ways Butch and Femme. (See pages 23 and 18.) Ivan frequently performs at high schools, universities, and festivals across North America. Originally from the Yukon, Ivan lives in Vancouver. ivancoyote.com Rae Spoon is a transgender indie musician whose most recent CD is My Prairie Home, which is also the title of a new National Film Board of Canada feature documentary about them, released in late 2013. LOOK WHO’S MORPHING
First published to acclaim in Australia, Look Who’s Morphing by Asian Australian writer Tom Cho is a funny, fantastical, often outlandish collection of stories firmly grounded in pop culture. The book’s central character undergoes a series of startling transformations, shape-shifting through figures drawn from film, television, music, books, porn flicks, and comics. Often accompanied by family members, this narrator becomes Godzilla, Suzi Quatro, Whitney Houston’s bodyguard, a Muppet, a gay leatherman, a nun who becomes a governess to the von Trapp children, and, in the book’s lavish climax, a 100-foot-tall guitar-wielding rock star performing for an adoring troupe of fans in Tokyo. Throughout these stories, there is a pervasive questioning of the nature of identity—cultural, racial, sexual, gender, and what lies beyond. Look Who’s Morphing is a stylish, highly entertaining literary debut in which nothing, including one’s self, can be taken for granted.
Tom Cho Influenced by the teen book series Sweet Valley High, Tom Cho began writing creative works in his mid-teens. He has a PhD in Professional Writing from Deakin University (Australia) and, alongside his work as a fiction writer, he has a parallel career as a freelance writer and editor. He divides his time between North America and Australia, where he was born and raised. He is currently writing a novel about the meaning of life. tomcho.com

I didn’t last long as a sailboat. A week later, I morphed into a robot that could morph into a blue and white Ford Bronco 4x4 and from this Ford Bronco back to a robot again. That night, I went to dinner with some friends. I decided to go to the restaurant in my form as a robot. I was still Chinese though. In fact, at the end of the night, when my friends began hugging each other goodbye, I morphed again—I grew spikes and curled up like an anteater so that no one could hug me goodbye. I generally do not like being hugged, much like others in my family. I was ready to leave but then a few of my friends suggested that we all go clubbing, so I morphed into a blonde sixteen-year-old girl with sparkling aquamarine eyes and a perfect size-six figure. However, once we got to the club, the security staff refused to let me in because I was only sixteen … In the end, I gained entry into the club by morphing into Heather Locklear.

Love is a beautiful punishment in Maroh’s paean to confusion, passion, and discovery … An elegantly impassioned love story. —Publishers Weekly (STARRED REVIEW)

The electric emotions of falling in love and the difficult process of self-acceptance will resonate with all readers … Maroh’s use of color is deliberate enough to be eye-catching in a world of grey tones, with Emma’s bright blue hair capturing Clementine’s imagination, but is used sparingly enough that it supports and blends naturally with the story. —Library Journal (STARRED REVIEW)

Few Vancouver nightspots evoke such a fabled history as the Penthouse Nightclub. major cities, but it has a rich and beguiling history. Past Tense Vancouver blogger Lani Russwurm is a regular contributor to the popular website Vancouver Is Awesome; in this fascinating book, produced in conjunction with V.I.A., Russwurm collects stories of the people, places, events, and phenomena that collectively have infused Vancouver with a distinct flavor and flair and which laid the foundation for the eclectic city we know today. Although not without its share of social issues and contradictions, this cosmopolitan port city has long been a magnet for creative and determined types in search of opportunity and willing to rise to the challenges posed by the Terminal City. And at this moment in Vancouver’s history, as it grapples with the divisive issues of rapid gentrification and overpriced real estate, Vancouver Was Awesome offers readers an opportunity to relive the city’s past and to remember what was, and what might have been. From vaudeville to beatniks, Rudyard Kipling to Charlie Chaplin, violent squirrels to train-hopping dogs, Lani Russwurm’s book is an entertaining, informative, and at times jaw-dropping tour of one city’s awesome past.

Dany Laferrière
SHOOT IT!
Hollywood Inc. and the Rising of I ndependent Film David Spaner

Laferrière reveals the shock, rage, and grief experienced by those around him, the acts of heroism he witnessed, and his own sense of survivor guilt. Foreword by former Governor General Michaëlle Jean.
Shoot It! is a revealing history of how Hollywood, with its eye on the bottom line, lost its ability to support the work of creative filmmakers; it is also a passionate portrait of the American independents, and others outside the studio system, who have risen up to fill the void.

THE LAST GENET
A Writer in Revolt Hadrien Laroche, translated by David Homel
ANARCHY AND ART
From the Paris Commune to the Fall of the Berlin Wall Allan Antliff
The Last Genet is a careful philosophical and historical reading of the last eighteen years in the life of Jean Genet, during which time he became intimately involved with the plight of the oppressed (the Black Panthers, the Palestinians, the Baader Meinhof).
In numerous essays, Allan Antliff interrogates moments of engagement when anarchist artists, poets, philosophers, and critics have confronted pivotal events over the past 135 years. A thoughtful discussion of art’s potential as a conduit for revolution and meaningful social change. —Midwest Book Review
[Genet’s] last journey, as revealed by Laroche, is imbued with beauty, metamorphosis and emancipation on one hand, and monstrosity, nihilism and hopelessness on the other. An indispensible study for readers interested in Genet, the Black Panthers, the Palestinian/Israeli conflict or, more generally, the philosophy of humanism. —Kirkus Reviews

Set in the 19th century, Isabel Miller’s classic lesbian novel traces the relationship between Patience White and Sarah Dowling, whose romantic bond does not sit well with the puritanical New England farming community in which they live. The writing has the directness and whimsicality of primitive paintings—it is like spiked gingerbread or surprising samplers. —Village Voice
When it was first published in 1988, Pat Califia’s Macho Sluts, a collection of S/M stories set in San Francisco’s dyke bathhouses, sex parties, and S/M gay bars, shocked the lesbian community and caused an upheaval in the field of queer publishing. An extraordinary, meditative novel about life among the Native Innu people in the wilds of northeastern Quebec. Naomi Fontaine, herself an Innu, wrote this novel at the age of twenty-three; with grace and perfect pitch, she depicts a community of nomadic hunters and fishers, and of hard-working mothers and their children, enduring a harsh, sometimes cruel reality with quiet dignity. With poetic restraint and a documentary-like eye, Kuessipan is a remarkable and intimate portrait of a world that reads like no other.
