February 6-12, 2015 3 Caribbean Star Newspaper Berbice teen commits suicide – after saying he is ‘confused’ with life
T
HE tragedy of 19-year-old Chetram Baljit’s self-induced death, occasioned after he had ingested a poisonous liquid which he had purchased over the counter at a business place in New Amsterdam, has been devastating to his family members, who are now wondering if they could have done something to prevent him from turning to suicide.Baljit, of Lot 17 Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice, had been employed as a weeder at the Rose Hall Sugar Estate in Berbice. His mother, Latchmee Persaud, told the Guyana Chronicle that, upon her questioning,
Baljit had informed her that he had purchased the deadly liquid earlier on Monday. She said the teen had told her, “Mammy, my life is confused. Mammy, I love you. Mammy I drink poison, me go dead.” As Persaud recounted the moments leading up to her son’s death, she confessed that neither she nor her husband had ever believed that their son would have been a victim of suicide. “My sister Gaitree was celebrating her birthday. My son was there. He ate (food) and drank a beer. I returned home to have a bath before returning AT A LOSS: The parents and lone sibling of the late Chetram Baljit to the celebrations. The yard in which my sister lives has two houses. My daughter stopped at the front house and I proceeded to the back. As I was passing, my son rushed out of the outhouse, crying: ‘Mammy, I drink poison, me go dead’, before falling at my feet.” The distraught woman said she screamed for her sister and husband, and together they took the unconscious youth to the front house, where he vomited. He was afterwards taken to the New Amsterdam hospital where, despite medical intervention, he succumbed 10 minutes later, whilst still clutching the hands of his mother. Persaud said her son had been popular and had lots of friends. She has denied that his premature death resulted from the family objecting to his relationship with a much older woman. “He say he confused. Me seh who you want me gon give you. Me never know he woulda dead! Ow me son. Me loving son,” wailed the mother in the local dialect after she had been questioned by this reporter. Baljit’s only sibling, Omwattie Baljit, recalled that she had not attended the New Amsterdam Technical Institute on Monday because she was unwell. She said she did not know it would have been the final day she would have spent with her brother. She said she had requested that he pick up the leaves which had fallen from the trees in the yard. “It was during this period that he started to talk about death. He told me that if he died before me, I must have the songs ‘Gone Away’, ‘Fallen Soldier’ along with an Indian song played as a tribute on television. He told me that he was not joking and that he was serious. However, he stopped talking about death after I threatened to tell mummy.” In retrospect, Omwattie noted that suicide was not a choice for her brother. “He should have sought counselling if the problem was too much. My parents are now helpless, they cannot do anything. I have to be strong for all of us,” the 18-year-old Omwattie said as she forced herself to grin. Baljit’s father Rakesh Baljit, in deep anguish, said he did not get to talk to his son on Monday, as he had left to graze the family’s cows. “I don’t know if he would have told me anything. I did not believe that my son had died, but I now believe, after seeing him in the mortuary. I can’t take this!” he cried. Chetram Baljit, also called ‘Yudesh’ and ‘Fletcher’, will be buried tomorrow at the Reliance Cemetery, a village some distance away from his home village.

Caribbean Star Newspaper Cash jet pilot tried to fly under IRS’ radar, US gov’t says February 6-12, 2015
D
uring a three-and-a-half year period, over 1,000 deposits totaling US$6.3 million were strategically placed into bank accounts controlled by indicted Guyanese pilot Khamraj Lall and his mother Joyce Lall in order to avoid detection of the movements of the funds, according to United States authorities. Lall, who is now facing a trial for bulk cash smuggling in a Puerto Rican court after being found there with US$620,000 stashed onboard his plane last year, is also the subject of forfeiture action brought by the US government for a total of US$442,743 held in 14 accounts controlled by Lall, his wife Nadinee, his mother or connected businesses. Lall, who was building a private hangar at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport when he was nabbed in Puerto Rico, owns and operates Exec Jet Club and Exec Jet Sales, with the latter between registered as a business in Florida. He also owns Kaylees Investments and Shannon Investments, both of which appear to be real estate investment holding companies. The authorities contend that deposits into the accounts were illegally “structured” to avoid the filing of currency transaction reports (CTRs), while the funds were used, in part, to purchase and/ or improve Lall’s “nonmonetary properties,” comprising real estate, aircraft and a Lexus vehicle. In a court filing last December in the civil court of New Jersey, authorities noted that when US domestic financial institutions are involved in a transaction for the payment, receipt or transfer of US currency in an amount greater than US$10,000, they are required to file the CTRs. The CTRs, which are filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), require disclosure of the identity of the individual who conducted
Khamraj Lall the transaction and the individual organisation for whom the transaction was completed. It was also noted that many individuals involved in illegal activities, such as tax invasion, money laundering, and narcotics trafficking, are aware of the reporting requirements and take active steps to cause financial institutions to fail to file CTRs in order to avoid detection of the movement of large amounts of cash. “Structuring,” which involves making multiple cash deposits or withdrawals in amounts of US$10,000 or less on the same day or consecutive days, and which is prohibited by law, is among the practices employed to avoid the filing of CTRs. According to the court filing, none of the deposits into accounts linked to Lall, his wife and his mother in three financial institutions—Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase Bank and Citibank—exceeded US$10,000 although many of the deposits were made the same day or on consecutive days. “While none of the deposits during this period of time were in an amount in excess of $10,000, there were a number of instances where the total of two or more deposits made on the same day or during a short period of time exceeded $10,000,” it says, while pointing out that during the week of
July 8, 2013, 19 separate deposits, none of which individually exceeded US$10,000 but which totalled US$117,0000 were made into nine of the accounts as well as line of credit accounts. The authorities say it is clear from the records that the source of the funds used to purchase and improve Lall’s nonmonetary properties was currency that had been structured into the accounts in a pattern indicative of an intent to avoid the filing of a CTR. “Furthermore, transfers among accounts and advances from lines of credit appear to have been used to obfuscate the fact that the source of funds used to purchase the defendant’s nonmonetary properties was currency that had been deposited in a structured manner,” the filing says. It was noted that in October of 2013, JP Morgan Chase Bank sent Lall a letter indicating that a pattern of cash transactions appeared designed to evade the CTR filing requirements. Enclosed with the letter was an instructional pamphlet published by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network informing Lall that structuring is illegal. However, Lall’s behaviour did not change after he received the letter. Apart from the cash held in the 14 bank accounts, authorities are also going after three properties owned by the couple, the aircraft and the Lexus vehicle. Authorities allege that a Ringwood, New Jersey property, purchased by the Lalls in 2002, was purchased and improved with US$541,605 in funds that were structured into bank accounts for the purpose of avoiding the filing of a CTR. Also, they allege a Citra, Florida property, purchased for US$121,500 by Shannon Investments in 2013, was also bought with funds that were structured into bank accounts, as was a Hamptonburgh, New York prop-
erty that was purchased by Kaylees for US$350,000. In relation to the aircraft, US$381,232 traceable in structured funds were allegedly transferred for the purchase of one plane, N822QL, while US$525,000 was allegedly transferred for the other, N923SL. In addition, US$47,101 that can allegedly be traced to structured funds was said to be used for the purchase of Lall’s Lexus. On November 23, 2014 authorities Puerto Rico arrested Lall after he was found with the cash hidden on the aircraft even though he had only declared US$5,000 when first approached. Searches of Lall’s private aircraft during a refueling stop at the Luis Munoz International Airport, in San Juan, on November 22, uncovered US$150,000, wrapped in plastic bags and a blanket under the exit row seat and US$470,000 in a black suitcase inside a compartment next to the engines, which contained several black garbage bags containing bundles of currency. Lall, authorities said, accepted responsibility and ownership for the money and informed that his co-pilot and his father, who were with him during the refuelling stop, had nothing to do with the cash According to the grand jury indictment, which was seen by Stabroek News, Lall is charged with bulk cash smuggling. It is alleged that with the intent to evade a currency reporting requirement, he knowingly concealed more than US$10,000 in currency and other monetary instruments and transported and transferred and attempted to transport and transfer such currency and monetary instruments from a place in the US, that is, Puerto Rico, to a place outside the US, that is, Guyana, in violation of United States Code 5332(a) (1) and (2).
Casket refused: Body returned to the US
T
he body of a Trinidadian woman who died in New York was brought back to Trinidad in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft, only to be returned to the United States, after Customs and Excise officials at the Piarco International Airport, refused to allow the casket to leave the plane. Officials said there were prob-
lems with the documents related to the body of Kamlawti Rampersad 54, who died on January 19, from a kidney ailment that had afflicted her for four years. Relatives were told that an import licence was needed to complete the process, as the body was being treated as cargo. Rampersad, who lived at Picton New Settlement, Dia-

Rampersad's common-in-law husband Deoraj Bhadree 57, said the situation is now costing the family unnecessary money when the body could have been kept in the country rather than being returned. He said that when his wife died he waited in New York until all the necessary paperwork was completed then returned to Trinidad on Saturday, the same day as his wife's remains. He said the family is now emotionally stressed by the situation and that all he wants is to put his wife to rest. He said: "my wife suffered enough, it’s time to put her to rest. My son running around trying to get everything and get her back into the country". The Express contacted the Customs and Excise Division and was told by an official that once the funeral agency has been contacted in both countries, in this case Trinidad and Tobago and the U.S., the funeral homes will guide the family along the process on gathering the necessary documents. Medical officials would have to deem the body
Kamlawti Rampersad who died on January 19 in the United States free of diseases before it is released and transported into the country. The Ministry of Health, Ministry of National Security and Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also have to be notified and be provided with the necessary documents. Once these steps are complete the body can be shipped and retrieved by the family for the funeral rites to be completed.

Caribbean Star Newspaper Albert Baldeo sentenced to 18 months in prison February 6-12, 2015
BY Anthony O’Reilly Queens chronicle
P
olitical activist and former City Council candidate Albert Baldeo was sentenced to 18 months in prison for attempting to block a federal investigation into a campaign donation scheme he allegedly ran, according to Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. “Albert Baldeo tried through intimidation and harassment to obstruct the government’s investigation of his alleged fraudulent campaign practices,” Bharara said Monday in a statement announcing the sentencing. “Today’s sentence is a fitting punishment for Baldeo’s crimes, and a reminder that this office and its law enforcement partners will continue to vigorously investigate and prosecute political corruption.” Baldeo, an attorney from Richmond Hill, was convicted last August of trying to block an investigation into whether he used straw donors to fund a special election campaign for City Council in 2010, a race that he lost to now-Councilman Ruben Wills (D-South Jamaica). Baldeo said he is appealing the conviction and the sentence.
“We were advised that we have very substantial grounds for appeal,” he said. He was acquitted of those charges, but was found guilty of “repeatedly instructing certain straw donors to provide false information to, or not cooperate with, the FBI agents who were investigating contributions to his campaign,” according to Bharara. Baldeo’s supporters blasted the judge for “demanding” a unanimous verdict from the jury after it was deadlocked for two days prior to the
conviction being handed down. In a release sent out hours after Baldeo’s sentencing, the group People for Baldeo, based out of Baldeo’s Liberty Avenue law office, again slammed the criminal justice system for its handling of the case. “We question how a jury can reach a verdict of guilty on the obstruction of justice counts, when they acquitted Mr. Baldeo on the main underlying charges, the ill conceived theory that the Baldeo campaign engaged in mail and wire fraud by spending its own money to pay off the campaign’s debts,” the group said. The group also claims that Baldeo was simply trying to tell his supporters their “bedrock constitutional rights they had in America, which does not exist in Third World countries, and that they did not have to speak to law enforcement,” and not trying to block the investigation. The group added that the sentencing “will only re-enforce the sad truth that individuals from under served minority communities will continue to be repressed and discouraged from participating in public service by the government’s actions here.” Baldeo also ran for the Council in 2005 and the state Senate in 2006.

A Brief Introduction to the Bhagavad Gita A Summary of the Holiest Book of the Hindus By Lars Martin Fosse
The Gita is the linchpin of a great epic, and that epic is the Mahabharata, or Great Story of the Bharatas. With nearly one hundred thousand verses divided into eighteen books, it is one of the longest epic poems in the world—fully seven times longer than the Iliad and the Odyssey combined, or three times longer than the Bible. It is in fact a whole library of stories that exerted a tremendous influence on the people and literature of India.
T
he central story of the Mahabharata is a conflict over succession to the throne of Hastinapura, a kingdom just north of modern Delhi that was the ancestral realm of a tribe most commonly known as the Bharatas. (India was at that time divided amongst many small, and often warring, kingdoms.) The struggle is between two groups of cousins, the Pandavas or sons of Pandu, and the Kauravas, or descendants of Kuru. Because of his blindness, Dhritarashtra, the elder brother of Pandu, is passed over as king, the throne going instead to Pandu. However, Pandu renounces the throne, and Dhritarashtra assumes power after all. The sons of Pandu— Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva—grow up together with their cousins, the Kauravas. Due to enmity and jealousy, the Pandavas are forced to leave the kingdom when their father dies. During their exile, they jointly marry Draupadi and befriend their cousin Krishna, who from then on accompanies them. They return and share sovereignty with the Kauravas, but have to withdraw to the forest for thirteen years when Yudhishthira loses all his possessions in a game of dice with Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kauravas. When they return from the forest to demand their share of the kingdom back, Duryodhana refuses. This means war.Krishna acts as counselor to the Pandavas. It is within this enormous epic …
well less than one percent of the Mahabharata that we find the Bhagavad Gita, or the Song of the Lord, most commonly referred to simply as the Gita. It is found in the sixth book of the epic, just before the great battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The greatest hero of the Pandavas, Arjuna, has pulled up his chariot in the middle of the battlefield between the two opposing armies. He is accompanied by Krishna, who acts as his charioteer. The Gita is found right here, with the two armies facing each other and ready for battle. The battle rages for eighteen days and ends with the defeat of the Kauravas. All the Kauravas die; only the five Pandava brothers and Krishna survive. The six set out for heaven together, but all die on the way, except Yudhishthira, who reaches the gates of heaven accompanied only by a small dog, who turns out to be an incarnation of the god Dharma. After tests of faithfulness and constancy, Yudhishthira is reunited in heaven with his brothers and Draupadi in eternal bliss. In a fit of despondency, Arjuna throws down his bow and refuses to fight, deploring the immorality of the coming war. It is a moment of supreme drama: time stands still, the armies are frozen in place, and God speaks. The situation is extremely grave. A great kingdom is about to self-destruct in internecine warfare, making a mockery of dharma, the eternal moral laws and customs that govern the universe.
Arjuna’s objections are well founded: He is the victim of a moral paradox. On the one hand, he is facing persons who, according to dharma, deserve his respect and veneration. On the other hand, his duty as a warrior demands that he kill them. Yet no fruits of victory would seem to justify such a heinous crime. It is, seemingly, a dilemma without solution. It is this state of moral confusion that the Gita sets out to mend. When Arjuna refuses to fight, Krishna has no patience with him. Only when he realizes the extent of Arjuna’s despondency does Krishna change his attitude and start teaching the mysteries of dharmic action in this world. He introduces Arjuna to the structure of the universe, the concepts of prakriti, primordial nature, and the three gunas, the properties that are active in prakriti. Then he takes Arjuna on a tour of philosophical ideas and ways of salvation. He discusses the nature of theory and action, the importance of ritual, the ultimate principle, Brahman, all the while gradually disclosing his own nature as the highest god. This part of the Gita culminates in an overwhelming vision: Krishna allows Arjuna to see his supernal form, the Vishvarupa, which strikes terror into Arjuna’s heart. The rest of the Gita deepens and supplements the ideas presented before the epiphany—the importance of self-control and faith, of equanimity and unselfishness, but above all, of bhakti, or devotion. Krishna explains to Arjuna how he can obtain immortality by transcending the prop-
erties which qualify not only primordial matter, but also human character and behavior. Krishna also emphasizes the importance of doing one’s duty, declaring that it is better to do one’s own duty without distinction than to do another’s duty well. In the end, Arjuna is convinced. He picks up his bow and is ready to fight. Knowing a couple of things will make your reading easier. The first is that the Gita is a conversation within a conversation. Dhritarashtra begins it by asking a question, and that is the last we hear out of him. He is answered by Sanjaya, who relates what is happening on the battlefield. (It is actually more dramatic and wondrous than the previous sentence indicates. Dhritarashtra is blind. Vyasa, his father, offers to restore his sight so he can follow the battle. Dhritarashtra declines this boon, feeling that seeing the carnage of his kinsmen would be more than he could bear. So instead, Vyasa bestows clairvoyance and clairaudience upon Sanjaya, Dhritarashtra’s minister and charioteer. As they sit in their palace, Sanjaya relates what he sees and hears on the distant battlefield.) Sanjaya pops up now and again throughout the book as he relates to Dhritarashtra the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna. This second conversation is a bit one-sided, as Krishna does almost all of the talking. Thus, Sanjaya describes the situation, Arjuna asks the questions, and Krishna gives the answers. Over 20 men were yesterday deported from the United States to Guyana.

he men touched down in a chartered World Atlantic MD-82 jet with a heavy security escort at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri at 2:39pm and were met by local law enforcement officials. At the airport, some family members were waiting, believing that the men could be collected from there. They were informed that their relatives would have to be taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), at Eve Leary, to be processed and fingerprinted first. The men went through nec-

They were then transported by a 30-seater police bus, which was escorted by a police 4x4 vehicle with armed Tactical Services Unit (TSU) policemen, to CID headquarters. The mother of one of the men expressed her frustration because she believed the men
were being treated as criminals even after serving their respective sentences. “Why all the police with guns and so and the bus has to go on the tarmac for them? They can’t come out like regular people and can’t they process them here at the airport before they go?” she questioned. “In the United States, when they serve their time, they are given their belongings and are

Four drown while performing religious ritual
A
FAMILY was plunged into deep mourning on Monday evening after four of its members were fished out of the Atlantic Ocean, off Vergenoegen, hours after trekking to the foreshore to perform a one-year ritual for another family member who died last year. The dead have been identified as 53-year-old Radika Persaud of Lot 13 Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, her son 14-year-old Ravin Persaud, her nephew Billy Narine, age 12, and her niece Annatina Persaud, age nine. Narine and Persaud who are siblings lived at Lot 2402 Onderneeming, Parfait Harmonie. Yesterday, Dularie Bhigman, Radika’s sister-in-law and aunt of the three dead children, said when she showed up at Radika’s home on the day of the incident, the woman was preparing to leave to perform the ritual. Bhigman said that Radika asked her not to go anywhere, since she would be returning shortly, and she along with her niece and nephew and son left for ‘the riverside’, which is located a short distance away from their home. Bhigman said that after it began to grow dark, she sent her daugh-
The home which Radika and the children left, promising to return ter to look for the four, since it was unusual for them to be down at ‘the riverside’ so late. The woman explained that when her daughter returned, she said that she did not see any of the four; only their clothing which was on the seashore. Bhigman said she immediately decided to go in search of the four herself, and, aided by another villager, she started a search at the home of other relatives in the area, but nothing proved that they had visited those homes. Persons in the area did tell media operatives that they saw the four heading to ‘the riverside’ on Monday afternoon. She explained that after coming up blank in her search for the four, she ventured to ‘the riverside’, where she began calling out the names of the missing four but got no answer. It was a few seconds
after, she said, that she saw two bubbles coming from the water, and then her nephew surfaced. “We keep calling for them, and get no answer, and we want to know if anyone hit them or do them anything. And suddenly, I see the mother and grandmother coming saying that they found the bucket till back that side, going closer to Parika. And I said, ‘You know what happen there? Somebody drowned,’” Bhigman told the Chronicle. The woman said that after raising an alarm, persons rushed to the location and began a frantic search for the other three persons, while the youngster was pulled from the ocean. A resident of the community plunged into the water and dived beneath the surface where he was able to locate the other three family members. This newspaper was also informed that the search for the missing persons commenced at approximately 18:30 hrs and the last body was pulled from the water at approximately 22:30 hrs, even as persons lamented the lengthy time they were forced to await the arrival of the hearse

Relatives explained that the tragedy has really shaken up the family, since it has now taken the number of persons who perished from the family within one year to six. The relative said that the family would usually make trips to the river for various rituals, and this is not the first time they went in more than twos. Another relative, who took media operatives to the koker where all four bodies were trapped, indicated the spots where the family

Based on what she showed media operatives yesterday, the family would usually use a location where the water is not usually very high. From all indications, however, when the family went on Monday, the water was high. And that might have also accounted for their being forced in the area of the koker door from where the lifeless bodies were pulled.

Our guiding Stars
The companions of our noble Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W)
T
he world once revolved in darkness. The darkness of sin and deviant beliefs. Spiritual darkness. Filled with chaos and corruption. Envy and hatred governed the day. Tribal war and petty conflict raged rampant in every society. Despicable customs and shameful practices prevailed. Modesty and morality dwindled away and human life was trivialized. It had been some time since a divine reminder had come, and mankind, in his forgetful nature, quickly digressed from the path of guidance. The future of humanity seemed very bleak and the cries of the rare reformers fell on deaf ears. This condition continued for some centuries. At this point our lord the most compassionate, looked upon us with a look of mercy as He raised up from this darkness a shining light in the form of His messenger Muhammad (S.A.W). Guided by nothing more than divine instructions, Muhammad (S.A.W) extinguished the darkness of the world with his life and teachings as a brilliant example. His teachings illuminated the hearts of those around him and eradicated all falsehood from their lives. They wholeheartedly accepted the new teachings and instilled the pure belief into their souls, thus becoming people of firm faith and outstanding personalities. History has never witnessed such resolute conviction in any teaching, people who devoted their entire lives to a cause in such an extremely fearless manner, with personal sacrifice and exertion, as it has witnessed in these companions of prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). It was on the strength of this exemplary behavior that these
individuals were raised from the pits of darkness to become guiding stars to success for humanity till the end of time. Khadijah RA – The pure (May Allah be pleased with her) Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that there was no doubt that Khadija (radiallahu anha) was the best woman of her time. She, along with her daughter Fatima (radiallahu anha), is among the four women who perfected their faith. Khadija (radiallahu anha), before the revelation of Salaah, Zakaah or Hajj, before the revelation of most of the rules and legislations, managed to perfect her Imaan. How was this possible? Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) told us, “The most perfect of the believers in their faith are the ones who have the best character.” Khadija (radiallahu anha) even before Islam was known as At-Tahira – the pure woman. Khadija (radiallahu anha) was the daughter of two royal people – Khuwaylid and Fatima – from the Quraish tribe. She was a wealthy business woman and was widowed twice. She heard about Rasulullah’s (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) fair dealings and how he was acclaimed to be al-Ameen (the trustworthy) amongst the people, and so she asked if he could accompany her merchandise to its various destinations – he agreed. During this time she had heard many more good things about his character. Added to this she had seen Rasulullah’s (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) truthfulness in his dealings. She wanted to marry Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)

who was 15 years younger than her because of his noble character, in accordance with the command that would come later on – “If someone comes to you with good religion and good character then marry that person, do not reject that person.” Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) accepted Khadija’s (radiallahu anha) proposal for marriage because of her qualities of goodness also. Their marriage was praised by all of the people of Makkah. When Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) had bestowed upon him the love for isolation and seclusion, he began to go to the Cave of Hira and sit for hours in contemplation. The Cave of Hira is at least an hour’s climb now with built up stairs but Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) regularly climbed to the cave without this “staircase” that leads to the opening. Khadija (radiallahu anha) never complained to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) about his time spent up in the cave but supported him in trying to find guidance. She, herself, would climb up the mountain at the age of 55, when Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) was 40 years old, to take food to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and to comfort him. When Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) came down one day from the Cave of Hira with the words, “Cover me”, seeking comfort from Khadija (radiallahu anha), she didn’t suggest to him not to return to the Cave or to stay home more often, she reassured him and supported him emotionally and religiously. She said to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), “Allah SWT will never disgrace you.” And she said to him, “You uphold the ties of kinship, you are good to your neighbor, you treat the orphans well, and you take up the cause of the one who has been wronged.” She explains to him why Allah SWT loves him and why she loves him. Good character is good Imaan. Khadija (radiallahu anha) recognised this in Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). ‘This is how I see you’, in nothing else but the most beautiful of ways did this wife speak to her husband and of her husband. Khadija (radiallahu anha) then tells Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that they should visit her cousin Waraqah ibn Naufal who was a biblical scholar. He would reveal to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that this was his first encounter with Jibreel (alayhi salaam). Ali (radiallahu anhu) who was raised in their household recalled the night when Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) would wake up and pray and Khadija (radiallahu anha) would wake up and stand right next to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and also pray. When Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) began calling people to Islam and the people rejected him, she stood firm with him and reassured him that Allah SWT would give him victory and honor him. Khadija (radiallahu anha) went to the length of supporting Rasulullah’s (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) mission and purpose financially and with everything that she had. Times became extremely difficult during the boycotts on Bani Hashim and Bani Mutallib, after living a life of luxury Khadija (radiallahu anha) was now in her 60s and the family did not have enough to eat. Her nephew, Hakim ibn Hizam (radiallahu anhu) was the only one sneaking food to her and to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). Abu Jahl had caught him and put a stop to it. But during all this Khadija (radiallahu anha) remained steadfast and loyal. When Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) lost her as a result of not being able to drink and eat properly, in a short time after losing his uncle Abu Taalib, he was devastated. Khadija (radiallahu anha) was 65 years old when she passed away. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) was 50 years old at the time and could have married again soon after but he always remembered Khadija’s (radiallahu anha) and extended that loyalty to her in return. That was why A’isha (radiallahu anha) once said, “I was never jealous of any of the wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) except for Khadija (radiallahu anha) and I have never even seen her.” But because Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) became so moved any time anyone
mentioned Khadija (radiallahu anha) it could be seen on his blessed face. He rushed when he heard her sister’s voice, remembering Khadija’s (radiallahu anha) voice. A’isha (radiallahu anha) said Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) never slaughtered a goat except that he always sent some of it to Khadija (radiallahu anha). He would send gifts to her friends out of his loyalty to her. A’isha (radiallahu anha) became jealous one time and expressed this to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who became angry and listed all the qualities of Khadija. “She believed in me when no one else believed in me.” She trusted me and considered me truthful when others denied me. And she spent on me when no one else would spend on me. And Allah SWT gave me children from and Allah SWT did not give me children from anyone else.” An honor of Khadija (radiallahu anha) is that it was only the children that were given to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) through her that the lineage of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) would survive. Because of Khadija (radiallahu anha) loyalty, Jibreel (alayhi salaam) – the angel who was sent by Allah SWT with the revelation of the Quraan – was sent to give Khadija (radiallahu anha) Salaam. He said to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that his wife is coming to him and Allah SWT sends His Salaam and Jibreel (alayhi salaam) gives his Salaam to her and Allah SWT gives her the glad tidings of a house in Paradise with no noise and no distress, because of what she provided to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) in this life, of silence and tranquility, relief and contentment. It was when Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) lost Khadija (radiallahu anha) that the Ulama say that’s when Allah SWT gave him Salaah, the five daily prayers. He lost his emotional support from Khadija (radiallahu anha) and Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) tasted the bitterness of this world and Allah SWT gave him Salaah to replace the emotional loss. February 6-12, 2015 15 Caribbean Star Newspaper Haiti children receive free treatment from Health City Cayman Islands hospital
G
RAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, Wednesday February 4, 2015 – Four children from Haiti have received free life-saving surgery at Health City Cayman Islands, bringing to eight the number of young Haitians who have benefited from Health City’s ongoing commitment to support the tertiary healthcare needs of Caribbean youth. The children included a critically ill 6-year-old girl with severe pulmonary issues, and three children with patent ductus arteriosus, an unclosed communication between the aorta and pulmonary artery. The surgeries were performed as part of Health City’s partnership with Have a Heart Cayman, a philanthropic organisation that
raises money to support paediatric heart surgeries in the Caribbean. The Haitian youngsters underwent treatment around the Christmas holidays and returned to their home country after being successfully treated. Dr. Chandy Abraham, Medical and Facility Director at Health City, said the surgeries were once again performed gratis by Health City’s surgeons, this time led by Dr. Sripadh Upadhya, Interventional Paediatric Cardiologist. “While surgeries – and this project in particular – require the collaboration of many individuals to be successful, special thanks should be made to Dr. Upadhya and his team
who led all four procedures,” he said. Dr. Abraham also showered praise on corporate partner Digicel for making the initiative possible via the use of its private jet, and Have a Heart Cayman for “changing the lives of these four children forever.” Dr. Upadhya said the procedures were accomplished with minimal invasiveness through a small hole in the groin. “The surgeries were performed in the catheterisation laboratory with diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualise the arteries and chambers of the heart.” “When the children arrived they were barely able to walk or play; they were very sick,” he said. “Following their surgeries,
they were able to play and jump around and were even well enough to be visited by Santa,” he remarked. Twenty-one children from Haiti have been identified by the Haiti Cardiac Alliance, a U.S.-based nonprofit organisation, as being in need of life altering medical treatment.

LAND dispute between two families at Handsome Tree, Mahaica Creek yesterday escalated into a bloodbath just after noon, leaving one dead and two seriously injured.Dead is 24-year-old Ravo Nandkishore, while his 26-year-old brother, Davo, is in the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital under strict surveillance, and their 62-yearold father, Jai Nandkishore, is a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). Jai Nandkishore being taken out of the ambulance at the GPHC’s Accident and Emergency Unit yesterday afternoon Jai Nandkishore being taken out of the ambulance at the GPHC’s Accident and Emergency Unit yesterday afternoon Of the two survivors, both of whom were severely chopped about their bodies, the father is said to be the more critical. Up to press time, doctors at the Georgetown Hospital were said to be battling to save his life, in spite of the multiple life-threatening wounds he sustained in the fracas. As news of the tragedy spread, weeping relatives hastened to both hospitals to see the wounded, and learn more about the incident. Among those accompanying Jai to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit of the GPHC was his sister, Seeta, his only sibling still in this country. Weeping bitterly, she prayed aloud that God would spare her brother’s life, and that of her nephew, Davo, since her other nephew, Ravo, had already been killed. Relatives could not immediately say what had transpired at the scene of the dispute, but they said that the murder and wounding very likely took place at the Mahaica Creek backdam, and not on their residential lots. They recalled the existence of an age-old land dispute between the Nandkishore family and a neighbour, whose name was given as “Tony”. They also disclosed that the matter had been resolved in the Courts.

Neesa Gopaul made, withdrew sex abuse complaint against step-father
A
police witness yesterday testified that murdered teen Neesa Gopaul had alleged that she was sexually assaulted by her step-father and then later withdrew the allegation. Four witnesses testified yesterday when the long-awaited trial of Gopaul’s mother, Bibi Sharima-Gopaul and the step-father Jarvis Small commenced at the High Court, before Justice Navindra Singh. Sharima-Gopaul and Small stand accused of killing the 16-year-old between September 24 and October 2, 2010, at Madewini, Linden-Soesdyke Highway. Although the two defendants sat mere inches apart in the prisoners’ dock, they neither spoke nor looked at each other. While Sharima-Gopaul smiled when her attorney made arguments in her favour, Small just sat looking around the court and smiled at relatives in the courtroom. Police Inspector Ingrid Abrams who was the officer-in-charge of the Leonora Police Station in 2010 was the first to testify. She told the court that in August of 2010, while she was stationed at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Leonora Police Station, she received information that Sharima-Gopaul had made two reports; one in relation to an assault committed against her by Small and the

other was an allegation that Small had sexually assaulted Neesa Gopaul. She said she then had an interview with Sharima-Gopaul, who confirmed that she did make the reports. As a result, Abrams said she instructed a constable to get the assistance of a Crime Unit to have Small arrested. Later, the Inspector added that she instructed a female police officer to escort Neesa Gopaul to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where a doctor issued a medical report on the teenager. Abrams also testified that on August, 26, 2010, Neesa Gopaul, in the presence of her mother Sharima-Gopaul, returned to the Leonora Police Station and stated that the allegation of sexual assault made against Small was not true. “I asked her if it was not true, why did she lie,” the witness said, adding that Gopaul then declared that she was fed-up of Small and wanted him out of the home. Abrams added that she then
Bibi Sharima–Gopaul
asked the teenager who she had sex with if not with Small and the teen said she had sex with her boyfriend on one occasion. When questioned about the particulars of the boyfriend, Abrams said, “She stopped talking.” After Gopaul’s retraction, Abrams said on August, 27, 2010, Sharima-Gopaul visited the station once more to hand over a copy of an affidavit and asked if it was sufficient to have the charges against Small dropped. However, Abrams said she read the document and informed the woman that the allegation against Small was already before the court and the police had no authority to drop the matters. That affidavit was admitted as evidence in the trial and labelled as “Exhibit A.” Under cross-examination by the defence attorneys for the two accused, Abrams admitted that no charge was pursued. She also said making a false allegation is an offence. Then there was the ques-
tion of whether the police expected the affidavit, which was signed by Sharima-Gopaul, would deal with the assault of Sharima-Gopaul and the sexual assault of Neesa Gopaul. The defence attorneys, however, pointed out that the document was not signed by Neesa Gopaul and Abrams agreed. Furthermore, the defence lawyers contended that the document had no admissibility in the trial since it did not relate to the murder of Gopaul, but rather to the assault against Sharima-Gopaul. Abrams later conceded that there was never an affidavit indicating the allegation was withdrawn by Neesa Gopaul. Also taking the witness stand was Justice of the Peace Phillip Matthews, who told the court he prepared the affidavit, when Small upon the recommendation of a friend, contacted him and eventually showed up at his home in the presence of Sharima-Gopaul and a young female, who he was unable to identify. The significance of Matthews’ testimony was that Neesa Gopaul never signed an affidavit prepared by him. He further noted that it was Sharima-Gopaul who requested an affidavit be made for a police report that she never gave details about. Jennifer Sumrah, who was a CID rank at the Leonora Police Station in 2010, testified that she took the statements of Neesa Gopaul alleg-

ing and later retracting that she was sexually assaulted by Small. In all, Sumrah said she took three statements from Gopaul in relation to her allegation. Two of the three were taken on August 26, 2010, while the last was taken on September, 16, 2010. At that point, one of Small’s four attorneys Bernard De Santos objected to the admission of the statements of Neesa Gopaul on the grounds that they were “seriously prejudicial” and “irrelevant” to any issue of deciding his client’s fate. Additionally, Sharima-Gopaul’s attorney George Thomas, who supported the objection, added that it does not touch the material fact of murder. State counsel Diane Kaulesar challenged De Santos’ objection and asserted that the statements were needed to add background and support the state’s contention that Small had motive to kill. Subsequently, Justice Singh upheld the objection. Police constable Keisha Douglas, who was attached to the CID Department at the La Grange Police Station in 2010, also testified yesterday. She said she escorted Gopaul in the company of her mother to the West Demerara Regional Hospital to be examined by a doctor on August, 21, 2010. She said after the examination, a medical certificate was issued by the doctor.

Voice Of The Youth M
y name is Shaw Ryan Khan. I am the son of Shaw M. Khan and Camille Zeena Khan and I am the grandson of Haji Ali Akbar Khan and Azeezan Khan from Canegrove, Guyana ,as well as Harry Singh and Lillian Ganpati Singh from Industry, Guyana. My respect to my parents and my grandparents always. I want to talk about a story I’ve had in mind for several months now. It’s something that happened in real life but I did not want to talk about it because I was not ready. However, after seeing some of the Super Bowl commercials, it made me realize I need to come up with the strength to talk about this. If you watched the Super Bowl, it was the commercial where the kid was saying that he would never learn to ride his bike, he would never get “cooties” when a girl kissed him, he would never learn to fly or travel the world with his best friend, nor would he ever get married. Why? Because he died from an accident. After this commercial played, I immediately thought of all those kids who are no longer in this world because of things that could have been prevented. It’s harsh to say but lying in those graves are dreams that will never been fulfilled, books that will never be written, stores that will never be opened, astronauts that will never make it to the moon, teachers who would never be able to spread knowledge to his/ her students, souls that would never be able to meet their mate…In particular, I began to think about a friend of mine; someone I knew for years and practically was his own cheerleader, cheering him on as we both competed to be successful in life. I will not mention his name nor will I mention his age. But he was a person who, no doubt, would have become one of the most successful lawyers in the world. From the time I knew him, he was always an amazing kid. He was the youngest son for his parents and he had 3 step-brothers, all off on their own and with their family. He was mommy and daddy’s pride and joy, the precious jewel that was growing brighter and more priceless as the days went by. He was also a public speaker, a singer, a dancer, a future author, and the list goes on. I won’t exaggerate when I say that when he sang, it was as if the angel’s came down to listen; he could make any rainy day turn to brightness with the melody of his voice. When he spoke, he could deliver his words into the hearts of his audience even before it reaches their ears. There were even some times where he won political debates when faced against me! And trust me, when it comes to debating, I work my best to make my points stronger. We’ve shared so many joyous moments, although we were not able to meet in person as often. We even had a little friendly
challenge as to who could get the best grades. It went like this; Sometimes when I text him and tell him I got a 100 in my History class, he would tell me he got a 101! And sometimes when he tells me that he got a 101 in his business class, I would tell him I got a 103. Our friendly challenge was difficult to win but so joyous to be a part of. But I failed as a friend. I failed to notice something that should have been noticeable. He was in a depression. And day by day, it began to get worse. Don’t get me wrong, his parents were so proud and always supportive of him but he never showed any signs that he is depressed towards them; he did not want to make them worried. But one girl knew. It was a girl in his school who did not speak until later that she saw the reasons why he was depressed but did nothing to help. She cried when she said that because she could have done something. Every day, he would come to school and constantly be harassed by other students. His books were thrown out of his hands, and he would have to pick it up by himself. Students would trip him and push him down the stairs, and he would have to pick himself up. Students would purposely move away from him when he sat down at the lunch table, and he would have to eat by himself. There were so many people that saw that but they did not want their “reputation” to be flawed in the school. They did not want to join him in his position at school. They valued themselves more than they valued helping out a fellow student. Like I said, all of this was found out way too late. The girl who broke this news to his parents and everyone else waited too late to do so; She waited until his funeral. Lying in a coffin was the boy who could have been a Harvard graduate one day, who could have been the most successful lawyer in the world, who could have been the sweetest husband to a lucky girl, who could have been the most awesome father any child could have ever wanted… Lying in that coffin was a boy who I considered one of my greatest friends, my brother from another mother… To this day, I feel like I could have done something had I known. But, he never wanted to make anyone worry for him; he wanted to spread joy to those he loved. I independently counsel and listen to individuals who need someone to talk to and get advice from. I wished he would have come to me, maybe I could have helped him. But, he is one of the reasons I continue to write today, one of the reasons I set up the non-profit organization Beacon of Peace, and one of the reasons I continue to help those who need it. And yet, I can’t accomplish this alone. There is only so much one person can do. This is why I am asking all of you to join
together and help me save a life that could be saved before it’s too late. For all those students out there; I want you to remember something. The kid you see being harassed has a mother and father who are at home or at work and have probably no idea they are being bullied. The kid has a family that loves him/her and would be sad if they could never see that person ever again. That kid has a future ahead that can be as bright and beautiful as ever. And you can help see that he/she lives to see that future. There is a saying, “if you see something, say something.” Take that phrase and use it in this case. If you see a student being treated wrong, say something. Tell your principal/dean, tell your advisor, tell your professor/ teacher; if you are scared to do so, tell a friend to do it instead! Don’t let some stupid thing like your “reputation in a school” stop you from saving a life. Abe Lincoln once said, “United we stand, divided we fall.” Don’t allow a chance for a division to occur, stand united against this type of treatment. Help make the world a better place. And before I move on, just remember one thing; if you think the best thing for the harassed student to do is to ignore what is happening to him/her, you are so very wrong. You can close your eyes to the things you don’t want to see, but you can’t close your heart to the things you don’t want to feel. For all the family members out there; don’t even let your son/daughter, sister/brother, cousin, nephew/niece, friend/best friend (yes I am including friendship under family members), etc., down. People in a depression don’t realize they are depressed most of the time. Denial is one of the very big phases in depression that can last even until the last day. Start asking your loved one how his/her day was or how school was. Don’t ever let that person just reply by saying, “it was fine” or “it was okay.” That’s not good enough! Let them talk to you but don’t scold them! The worst thing a person can do is act the role of the lecturer disciplining his students. Act like a friend to them. Even better than that, be a friend to them. Be that person they can talk to no matter what, be that person who he/she can reach out to. Don’t get me wrong; I am not telling you to bug the living daylight out of your loved one. I am telling you to become more involved in his/her life. They may not like you at that moment in time but I guarantee you, they will thank you, appreciate you, and love you much more later on when they realize what you have done. For all those who are going through this rough time; I just want you to know, you are not alone in this world. Regardless of what you are thinking right now, there are so many individuals who
love you and will help you overcome this tough phase in your life. Don’t be ashamed to talk to someone about it. Don’t be embarrassed about your situation; there are a lot of individuals going through the same thing! For those that sought help as soon as possible, their chances of living out all their dreams and desires in life increased abundantly. Also, I just want to say this; Suicide does not end the chances of life getting worse. Suicide eliminates the possibility of it ever getting better. So don’t wait until it’s too late. It seems very hard but try your best to seek help from a loved one, a teacher, etc. Every week, I put my information at the bottom of this article; if you would like to contact me to talk, that is fine by me! If you rather talk to someone anonymous, the USA suicide lifeline is 1800-273-8255. Stay safe, my friends. Yes, I may not know you but I still consider you to be my friend. There are so many people that care about you so show them you care about them and seek help so that you don’t have to fight this battle on your own… Before I end my article, I just want to say this; may God continue to bless each and every one of you and I wish for you to achieve peace and serenity in your lives! Lastly my readers, in your journey through life, I hope you heed my advice. I want nothing except peace and serenity. And remember this; “children should be able to live a life free from bullying and harassment. It is time that we all took a stand against this.” God bless you all and see you in two weeks! COME AND FIND REST FOR YOUR SOUL “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus gave us an invitation. Many voices are calling us daily. There is the voice of worldly pleasure luring the simple minded into indulgence that offers temporary pleasure. After the moment is over, we realize we are still left empty and usually with hurt and loss. The gambler is broken hearted and broke. The drinker goes home miserable and many times his family feels the pain of the effects of his drinking. The adulterer is confronted with shame and a confused family. The voice of Jesus calls, “Come unto Me, and I will give you rest.” Jesus promises to take away the burden of guilt and shame. He will set your heart free as He has done for millions who trust Him. He forgives everyone who seeks His forgiveness. He will restore a broken life and add meaning to life. He brings hope for the future. He said in Mark 2:17, “They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” If we recognize our need, we can come to Him and find rest. Jesus spoke with authority. When Jesus gave this invitation, He was asserting His authority. No one has the right to call anyone to himself expect God. Too many people try presenting themselves as something they are not. We try to attract attention to ourselves but we are unable to meet the needs of people. Some of our friends or relatives mean well when they make promises, but all too often they fail to deliver. Kings, Presidents, religious leaders, political leaders and others may fail. Jesus never failed and He never will! In Mark’s Gospel, a paralyzed man was brought to Jesus on a mat. Jesus declared his sins were forgiven, thus making the way for His healing power to operate in the man’s body. Religious leaders did not approve Jesus declaring forgiveness of sins. Here is what Mark recorded: “Immediately Je-
sus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” Mark 2:8-12 Jesus offers His yoke. The yoke He referred to was a wooden instrument that rested on the necks of two animals joining them as a team. In Bible times, the farmer would usually use a seasoned animal that is already trained along with a younger or untrained one. By yoking them, the older one leads the younger, thus training the latter in the process whilst using its support. Jesus used that symbolism to say He, the allwise, strongest of the strong, loving and caring One, will help us along the way and lead us to success in this life and eventually into eternal life. Notice, Jesus not merely said “Come and find rest,” but He wants us to learn of Him. My friend, we must not merely come because we need something from Him. He wants to do more for you than just “give you a fish.” He wants to “teach you how to fish” and set you free for the rest of your life. Come and learn more about His love. There is a lot to learn about His eternal existence, His mighty power available to those who believe on Him. He gave up His life to pay our penalty for sins and He arose from the dead. He lives forever and is crowned King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Jesus is the One who is coming back again to judge the world. You can trust Him and His promises. We must make sure we are yoked up to the right Person. Who is leading you? Who helps
you bear your burdens? Are you yoked to the right person? Jesus has a Shepherd’s heart. The expression “I am gentle and humble in heart” conveys His self-less care and compassion for us. As a shepherd loves and cares for his sheep, so Jesus watches over His own and provides care for each one. It is safe to trust in Jesus. He will never act against your best interest. We are guaranteed His love and care because he gave up His own life for our redemption. Although He is the Son of God come down from glory, He humbled Himself and served people, washed the feet of the disciples, submitted to torture and death on the Cross for our sins. But He rose from the dead and is now exalted in Heaven from whence He will come again soon. His heart longs for you. He loves you. He wants to change your life and your circumstances and one day take you to His home in Heaven. Jesus concluded the Sermon on the Mount with these words: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone
who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” Matthew 7:24-29 Take your family to church this weekend.

Police nab man who allegedly raped woman on tomb in Best Cemetery
A
CTING Sunday night on information received, police arrested a 25-year-old man who is alleged to have brutally raped a teenage girl on a tomb in the Best Cemetery, West Coast Demerara on Friday evening. The Guyana Chronicle has been informed that the police were able to apprehend the man even as he attempted to flee from them. The Guyana Chronicle reported yesterday on the ordeal the young lady had to endure at the hands of a stranger who apprehended her at knife point to commit the unlawful sex act. Initially hospitalised following the incident, the
teen has reportedly been discharged and is at home surrounded by family members. The young lady was reportedly heading to her Best village home walking along a dark and lonely road on Friday when she encountered the man, who approached her from behind on a motorcycle, first taking a good look at the teen while riding past her, and then circling her before dismounting and pretending to be urinating. As the young lady attempted to pass him, he grabbed her, choked her and dragged her into the cemetery, where he raped her while wielding a knife
over her to ensure that she subjected herself to the act. After the man had completed his dastardly act, he left his victim crying as she lay among the bushes, and he made good his escape. Stumbling through the graveyard, the teen made her way back onto the roadway and to the first house located at the squatting area in the village. She recounted her ordeal and her family was immediately informed. They arrived, collected her and took her to the hospital. Community residents have expressed outrage over the fact that nothing has been done for the longest while, de-

n unlicensed teen driver died and his friend was injured after he lost control of the vehicle he was driving in the wee hours of yesterday morning and ended up in a trench on the Corentyne. Akash Mohan called “Boye”, 15, reportedly took his cousin’s Toyota 4Runner without permission and went joyriding. His cousin Mahindra Baichan called `Cardo’ was asleep at the time, reports said. Mohan’s friend Andrew Sooknandan, 16, of Kingston, Corriverton, who occupied the passenger seat at the time of the accident, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. A release from the police stated that Mohan was driving a motor vehicle along the Public Road at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, when he lost control of it and collided with a parked vehicle and a concrete bridge. Stabroek News understands that Mohan collected the keys to the vehicle after everyone had retired to bed. After Mohan snuck out with the vehicle he went to Kingston and picked up Sooknandan. Reports are that Mohan was speeding when he hit a pile of stone that was on the left hand side of the road. This resulted in him losing control of the vehicle as he skidded on the pebbles. He then slammed into the parked vehicle, dropped in a trench next to the public road, crossed a street and landed between a trench on the cross street bracing on the fence of a mandir. As the vehicle toppled and turned, a utility pole and a signboard were smashed. Parts of the vehicle and skid marks told the tale. When Stabroek News visited the scene yesterday, an excavator was removing

spite their repeated calls for street lights along the Best Road, and for the dense bushes to be cleared. “This continued failure of the Regional Administration to address such an urgent need, and a situation that puts the residents of the community at risk, is shameful and deserves strong condemnation,” residents declared. While expressing sympathy for the young woman, they are again demanding that the authorities get their act together and move with all due haste to have the bushes cut and lights installed along that dark and foreboding street.

On closer inspection, he observed the entire right side of the vehicle wrecked. Singh said that while he was inspecting his vehicle, a patrol from the Berbice Anti-Smuggling Squad (BASS) drove up and members informed him that they had seen a vehicle driving at a fast rate and it was probably the same vehicle that damaged his. ast year’s finalist three-time champion Black Sage (Phillip Murray) has failed to qualify for the 2015 final of the National Extempo championship. Black Sage won the championship in 1995, 1999, and 2004, and has been a finalist on many occasions. At the end of the preliminaries held at Kaiso House in the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, on Monday night, the finalists named were three-time winner Lingo (Joseph Vautor La Placeliere), Francois Ottley, Abebele (Neil Baptiste), Nesta Boxhill, lone female competitor and two-time winner Lady Africa (Leslie Ann Bristow), Myron B (Myron Bruce) and Contender (Mark John). The event, which has seen an increase in patronage over the years, attracted a full house of listeners who were treated to a very keen contest featuring 25 extempo exponents, in a musical battle of creative wit and ingenuity, seeking to advance to the final and pit their talents against the reigning champion Brian London. In the first round, each competitor was required to make a blind selection from a receptacle and sing on topics that required knowledge of words, quick thinking and wit in order to create rhyming sentences. Among the more challenging ones were: Lay Your Head On My Pillow, Left Hand Dumpling, Stress Does Kill Yuh, Doh Take It On, The Art Of Making Love, and Who Judging The Judges.

Caribbean Star Newspaper The importance of creating a will
A
will is one of the most important documents you’ll ever create in your lifetime. Your will can clearly state who will be guardian of your minor children, who will inherit your assets, when they will inherit your assets, and any conditions that must be met for them to receive your assets. Yet, according to a legal services website RocketLawyer.com, almost 50% of Americans do not have a will.1 If you die without a valid will, the court does not have your instructions to follow, and it has no way of knowing how you may have wanted to distribute your assets. The state where you lived steps in and makes the decisions for you, according to the distribution schedule set forth in its intestacy statutes. The state’s decisions may or may not conform to your wishes, or do what is best for the people closest to you. And your loved ones will likely have to hire an attorney and incur delays to determine who will receive your assets. Common misconceptions. My assets are so small that a will is not necessary. You are generally worth more
than you think. Even if some possessions do not hold great monetary value, they could hold an enormous amount of sentimental value—and that’s something you can’t put a price on. Failing to indicate who receives these treasures in your will can cause friction among family members that lasts for decades. When I die, my spouse will get all of my assets. Maybe, and maybe not. Any assets held jointly with right of survivorship automatically pass to the joint owner. And assets with a beneficiary designation, such as IRAs, life insurance, and annuities, pass as stated on the beneficiary form. What happens when your surviving spouse dies? What happens if your beneficiary form is outdated? Will your children receive their share at too early an age? Does your spouse have the financial skill to manage the family wealth? I can create a will on my own and save the legal costs. “Do-it-yourself” wills often do not contain all of the necessary components as required by state law. Anyone who might benefit from an invalidation of your will
can contest it, and if the courts decide in his or her favor, your estate may have to pay for all legal costs. The few dollars you save now can cost your loved ones thousands of dollars later. I don’t want my final wishes to be set in stone. I’ll create a will later in my life. The terms of a will can change as often as needed. Legal experts agree that you should reexamine your will periodically to make sure it is up-to-date. A will should receive a “checkup” whenever there is a substantial change in your life. How to create a will. Drafting a will is difficult and is not an endeavor you want to tackle single-handedly. It’s important that you call on the services of an estate-planning lawyer. A lawyer might help you: Determine what type of will you need Make the right decisions as to how your assets should pass Change the terms of an existing will, if appropriate Save on estate taxes Take advantage of estate planning opportunities people often overlook Life insurance and wills.
February 6-12, 2015
How does life insurance fit into the picture? Life insurance is a vehicle you can use to help make sure your estate has the cash needed to pay expenses at your death, such as funeral costs, debts, and estate taxes. Without liquid assets, the estate may be forced to sell assets—securities may have to be sold in a down market and other assets may have to be liquidated at a discount. In most instances, life insurance proceeds are paid income tax-free to your beneficiaries. If desired, life insurance can be owned by a trust or a third party and also not be subject to estate taxes. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Creating a will forces each of us to come face-to-face with our own mortality—and dealing with death is difficult. But it will be much more difficult for your loved ones if you don’t have a will. To ensure that your will is legally viable, seek the services of a qualified attorney to draft and refine it. Magnitude 5.0 earthquake rattles Trinidad, Venezuela
P
Caribbean Star Newspaper Colin Mack found not guilty of rape, assault and abduction
February 6-12, 2015
ORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Wednesday February 4, 2015, CMC – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 rattled Trinidad early on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages. The Seismic Unit of the University of the West Indies (UWI) said that the quake, which occurred at 6.59 am, was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, 126 kilometers west of Port of Spain. Presidents in the weatern Diego Martin area called radio stations here to report feeling the tremor. The Seismic Unit said that the quake was also felt Carupano and Maturin in Venezuela.
W
ell-known entertainment promoter Colin Mack yesterday walked out of the Georgetown High Court a free man, almost 6 years after he was initially charged with raping a 19-year-old girl. In Justice Navindra Singh’s packed courtroom, Mack was deemed not guilty by a 12-member jury on charges of rape, assault, and abduction. The verdict on all three charges, which came almost five hours after the jury initially retired to deliberate, was unanimous. At about 11 am yesterday, the jury entered Justice Singh’s courtroom to be briefed on the evidence accrued in a week of testimony. The testimonies of key witnesses, including Mack and the accuser, were also recapped. At about 11.45 am, the jury retired for the first time and emerged at about 3.20 pm. Before they could even enter the courtroom, persons swarmed in, eager to hear the verdict. However, the foreman indicated that the jurors needed further direction. The foreman also requested the testimony of another witness, but was told that the jury must determine a verdict from the evidence already presented. Justice Singh also opined that the case was not a complicated one and was based on the issue of credibility. Following the brief directions, the jury of 6 men and 6 women retired once more
Colin Mack and returned about half an hour later, having completed their deliberations. As the foreman was questioned, Mack stood seemingly calm in the docks, his hands clasped behind his back. His composure was completely different to that of his family and friends. His girlfriend sat tense in her seat, her mouth covered by her fists while her mother beside her had a hand on shoulder. Mack’s mother also sat nearby. As the final not guilty verdict was returned, the young woman let out a barely audible, “Thank you God!” while Mack’s mother smiled jubilantly. In comparison, Mack simply nodded
and eagerly made his way out of the docks when Justice Singh declared him free. In the other corner was a scene of complete devastation. The virtual complainant sat stone-still in her seat, her eyes shrouded by tinted sunglasses. Her relatives instead made their way out of the courtroom. Their expressions varied from shock and disappointment to outright anger. The accuser finally unfroze and made her way out of the courtroom to be consoled by her friends and family. When approached by this newspaper, the young woman could only shake her head in disbelief and hug herself tightly. In April 2009, Mack initially appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with rape and was later committed to stand trial in the High Court. The trial got underway last week. While the VC maintained that she had been abducted, assaulted and raped by Mack following a night out with the man, Mack insisted that the sex had been consensual. The young woman had taken to the stand last week and given testimony that lasted nearly 7 hours. A medical report, which was admitted as evidence in the rape trial, had revealed that she had sustained injuries to her eyes, elbow and genitals. The young woman was the state’s main witness in the trial.

RAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (CMC) - Four Haitian children, including a critically ill six-year-old girl with severe pulmonary issues, have received free, life-saving surgery at Health City Cayman Islands. Medical and Facility Director at Health City, Dr Chandy Abraham, said the surgeries were done free of charge by a team led Dr Sripadh Upadhya, an interventional paediatric cardiologist. “While surgeries, and this project in particular, require the collaboration of many individuals to be successful, special thanks should be made to Dr Upadhya and his team who led all four procedures," he said. The children were suffering from patent ductus arteriosus, an unclosed communication between the aorta and pulmonary artery.
"The surgeries were performed in the catheterisation laboratory with diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualise the arteries and chambers of the heart,” said Dr Upadhya. "When the children arrived they were barely able to walk or play; they were very sick. Following their surgeries, they were able to play and jump around and were even well enough to be visited by Santa," he added. So far, Health City Cayman Islands, has treated eight young Haitians, who have benefited from its ongoing commitment to support the health needs of Caribbean youth. A statement from the hospital said that 21 children from Haiti have been identified by the Haiti Cardiac Alliance, a USbased nonprofit organisation, as being in need of life-altering medical treatment.

Helping Others S
By: Daniel Ramlal
eeta Ram. My name is Daniel Ramlal. I am twelve years old and a blessed member of the Naujavaan Mandalee Youth Group of the Shaanti Bhavan Mandir. I hope that my article can help you to better understand the feeling of joy that comes with helping others. There are many things in our everyday life that we can do to help others. A simple thing we can do every day is to give recognition to people. An effortless gesture, such as simply acknowledging someone, can mean so much. Saying “good morning” “good afternoon”, “Seeta Ram”, or “Namaste” is a simple way to show respect. I once heard a story on how a simple greeting of “good morning” and “good afternoon” helped saved a man’s life. Every day, a worker says “good morning” to the security guard as he enters the office and “good night” as he leaves for home. One day, the security guard realized that he didn’t get a “good night” greeting from this worker. As a result, the security guard went to look for the worker. He found the worker in the freezer storage area. The worker was not able to get out on his own as the doors were locked from the outside. The guard was able to help the worker to safety. As you can see, this man’s life was saved because of a simple “good morning” and good night”. Saying good morning or good night is also a simple way to show someone that you care. In today’s society, many individuals get up in the mornings and rush off to where they have to be without saying a word to anyone. When you say something polite to another person, one’s soul may be uplifted. Another thing we can do to help others is to see the good in them. Praise them when they perform a good act. Always try to be a positive influence. In addition, we should not interfere with other people’s viewpoints because we are all entitled to having an opinion. We must not judge, criticize or discriminate. We can offer assistance in a polite manner. Additionally, it is important to share your knowledge when it comes to school, work, and religion. This will help people with their lives and you might even learn something in return. Helping others give a sense of satisfaction. Recently, I was given the opportunity to participate in Seva (service) at two senior centers in Queens, New York. I was very proud to be a part of this Seva. Seeing the smiles on the faces

They were treated to massages, facials, manicures etc. There are a many senior centers in our community that need our help. We can support and give a helping hand whenever time permits. Families can come together and sponsor breakfast or lunch and spend some quality time with the elderly. People have different problems in life. When we cross path with these individuals, we should not ignore them. Always ask if you can provide some assistance. They might simply need a helping hand to cross the streets or take their bags to the car. Recently, there was a huge snow storm. You can help your neighbors shovel their snow or offer them a ride. People of all ages have been bullied. You can help by telling an adult or advise them to get some counseling. Helping others is a very good deed. When you help someone you shouldn’t expect anything in return. Furthermore, you might learn something to make yourself a better person. In this Kali Yuga age, Hindus believe that doing selfless services and being in the company of godlike people can help bring you closer to god. These good actions will definitely have a positive impact on your karma to obtain Moksha (liberation). Jai Ho

Jamaica to help Costa Rica set up Local Government system
K
INGSTON, Jamaica – The Government has agreed to assist Costa Rica to establish a Local Government system. As part of the agreement, the country will facilitate visits by Costa Rican Government officials to familiarise themselves with the parish council and municipal system in Jamaica. This, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) said in a release Tuesday, is among other areas of functional cooperation being considered to strengthen ties between the two countries. Once you get those feelings sorted out, you’ll be ready for the charged energy that Wednesday and Thursday bring. Someone or something’s challenging you now; if your initial reaction is to walk away, you’ll know it’s time to stop clinging to what you think you know. Your brain’s totally engaged, you’ve got awesome instincts and you’ll know when to say ‘why not?’ Moreover, it’s all great fun. Bradley Cooper surprised by 'American Sniper' debates
A
ctor Bradley Cooper never expected that his biographical war drama film 'American Sniper' would spark heated political debates. The 40-year-old, who played US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in US military history, commented on political discussions around the film during the Academy Awards nominees luncheon on Monday, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Speaking to media at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Cooper said: "You never know when you make a movie if anybody's going to see it, so to have the audacity to think that it would cause any sort of effect at all would be pretty presumptuous. Any discussion that sort of sheds light to the plight of the soldiers and the men and women in the armed services, for that discussion to occur is fantastic."
The police booked Darbar's son Jayed, his friends Nishant Singh and Mohsin Khan under Indian Penal Code section 323, 324, 504 and 506. The victim, Prashant Chaudhary, lives at Evershine building at Jogeshwari (West). The accused went to meet the victim and called him to the parking area of the building to discuss the payment issue. There was an argument between them after which the accused allegedly assaulted Chaudhary with a hockey stick.
Ashoke Pandit: 'I cannot answer AIB's vulgarity with charity'
eacting to the uproar caused by his tweet, Censor Board member, Ashoke Pandit says he is appalled with the participation of celebs like Karan Johar, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor in the AIB Knockout roast and by tweeting he was only expressing his displeasure. "I am a fan of Karan Johar's cinema and am extremely hurt by what he has done on the stage. He makes films that promote core Indian values and people look upto him but when he endorses a show like this one, it sends out the wrong message to the youth of the country," reasons Ashoke Pandit. The Censor board member had earlier tweeted, "Karan Johar could have easily shown his position while performing sex to his mom at home instead of making it public. #AIB Porn Show." This tweet has caused an uproar on Twitter with several Twitter users lambasting Ashoke Pandit for the distasteful language. In his defence, Ashoke clarifies, "I have been misunderstood. I only meant to say that if Karan Johar wanted to show the position in which he prefers having sex to his mother, he could have done it in the privacy of his house and not on a public platform." But by tweeting in what was being termed to be 'crass' language, isn't he promoting the very concept that he is opposing? "I cannot answer AIB's vulgarity with charity. I have to send out the message loud and clear and for that I have to use a language that they understand. The tweet is just an extension of the roast" he asserts.
The government has ordered a probe into the issue and the State Culture ministry is investigating if the show had the necessary censor clearance before staging it in a public stadium. However, Ashoke Pandit hesitates when asked if he, as a member of the Censor Board, would take any steps to stop this kind of content. "Scripts of such shows are screened by a different Censor Board. However, I don't think they would have obtained a certificate. I am a citizen of this country and have equal freedom of speech. Besides, I am not here to preach anything or teach a moral lesson to Karan Johar, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. I have voiced my opinion, just the manner in which they have," explains Ashoke.

ate Robin Williams' wife Susan Schneider Williams and kids are allegedly involved in a contentious legal dispute over his estate. In their court papers, both sides display keen interest in such memorabilia i.e. everything from actor's bicycles to his collections of fossils and toys as tangible, deeply personal reminders of the irrepressible, manic imagination, the New York Times reported. Allan Mayer, a spokesman for the Williams children, said in an email that not withstanding Schneider's insinuations, the fact is that neither the Williams' children nor any representative of theirs has been in the house or had anything taken from it since Robin's tragic death. The papers filed by Schneider showed that, since she lost her husband through a shocking and emotionally charged event, she has not been given time to grieve her loss free from the frenetic efforts to interfere with her domestic tranquility. Schneider acknowledged in her legal papers that she had no claim to items like the distinctive suspenders her husband wore on 'Mork and Mindy,' because they are related to the actor's acting career in the entertainment industry but she said that she should be entitled to other items, like the tuxedo that he wore at their wedding, as well as his personal collections of knickknacks and other items that are not associated with his famous persona. Robin's kids on the other hand said in
their filing that they are 'heartbroken' that Schneider, who they note was married to their father for less than three years, has acted against his wishes by challenging the plans he so carefully made for late American actor's estate. The children countered that Schneider has continued to block their access to the Tiburon home, even as she has allowed others inside. Those others included appraisers who estimated the value of items that the children contend are rightfully theirs and workers who helped design and complete a $30,000 renovation, the court papers contend. The dispute is mainly focused on how the estate should distribute Robin's personal effects, both from his days as an entertainer and as a family man.

Ebola has mutated and could be more contagious, experts warn
L
ONDON, England, Tuesday February 3, 2015 – More than 22,000 people have been infected and about 9,000 are known to have died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since what evolved into the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola was identified last March. Now, scientists tracking the Ebola outbreak in Guinea say the virus has mutated, and researchers at the Institut Pasteur in France are investigating whether it could have become more contagious. Experts are analysing hundreds of blood samples from Ebola patients in Guinea, tracking how the virus is changing, and trying to determine whether it’s able to jump more easily from person to person. “We know the virus is changing quite a lot,” human geneticist Dr Anavaj Sakuntabhai told BBC News. “That’s important for diagnosing [new cases] and for treatment. We need to know how the virus [is changing] to keep up with our enemy.” Ebola is an RNA virus, like HIV and influenza, which have a high rate of mutation. That makes the virus more able to adapt and raises the potential for it to become more contagious. “We’ve now seen several cases that don’t have any symptoms at all, asymptomatic cases,” Dr Sakuntabhai continued. “These people may be the people who can spread the virus better, but we still don’t know that yet. A virus can change itself to less deadly, but more contagious and that’s something we are afraid of.” According to Professor Jonathan Ball, a virologist at Nottingham University, it’s still unclear whether more people are actually not showing symptoms in this outbreak compared with previous ones. “We know asymptomatic infections occur… but whether we are seeing more of it in the current
outbreak is difficult to ascertain,” Professor Ball said. “It could simply be a numbers game; that the more infection there is out in the wider population, then obviously the more asymptomatic infections we are going to see.” Another common concern raised in the BBC report was that while the virus has more time and more “hosts” to develop in, Ebola could mutate and eventually become airborne. Fortunately, there is no evidence to suggest that is happening. The virus is still only passed through direct contact with infected people’s body fluids. “No blood borne virus, for example HIV or Hepatitis B, has ever shown any indication of becoming airborne. The mutation would need to be major,” said infectious disease expert Professor David Heyman. Virologist Noel Tordo from the Institut Pasteur in the Guinea capital Conakry said: “At the moment, not enough has been done in terms of the evolution of the virus both geographically and in the human body, so we have to learn more. But something has shown that there are mutations. “For the moment the way of transmission is still the same. You just have to avoid contact [with a sick person]. “But as a scientist you can’t predict it won’t change. Maybe it will.” Researchers are using a method called genetic sequencing to track changes in the genetic make-up of the virus. So far they have analysed around 20 blood samples from Guinea. Another 600 samples are being sent to the labs in the coming months, the BBC reported. A previous similar study in Sierra Leone showed the Ebola virus mutated considerably in the first 24 days of the outbreak, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO said: “This certainly does raise a lot of scientific questions about transmissibility, response to vaccines and drugs, use of convalescent plasma. “However, many gene mutations may not have any impact on how the virus responds to drugs or behaves in human populations.” The research in Paris will also help give scientists a clearer insight into why some people survive Ebola, and others don’t. The survival rate of the current outbreak is around 40 percent. It’s hoped this will help scientists developing vaccines to protect people against the virus. Researchers at the Institut Pasteur are currently developing two vaccines which they hope will be in human trials by the end of the year. One is a modification of the widely used measles vaccine, where people are given a weakened and harmless form of the virus which in turn triggers an immune response. That response fights and defeats the disease if someone comes into contact with it. The idea, if it proves successful, would be that the vaccine would protect against both measles and Ebola. “We’ve seen now this is a threat that can be quite large and can extend on a global scale,” said Professor James Di Santo, and immunologist at the Institut. “We’ve learned this virus is not a problem of Africa, it’s a problem for everyone. “This particular outbreak may wane and go away, but we’re going to have another infectious outbreak at some point, because the places where the virus hides in nature, for example in small animals, is still a threat for humans in the future,” he added. “The best type of response we can think of… is to have vaccination of global populations.” (BBC News)

St Kitts police investigate terrorist threats against Nigerian students
B
ASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Monday February 2, 2015, CMC – Police have launched an investigation into alleged terrorist threats made against Nigerian students studying here last month. “The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is investigating comments made on a local talk show where a caller allegedly living in the United States of America, openly made terrorist threats against Nigerians living in St. Kitts who may choose to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming democratic elections. “The investigation also includes seeking the help of external allies, as the caller intimated that he was from the United States,” the police said in a statement regarding the January 8 incident. Last month, the privately owned West Indies News Network (Winn FM) said it had taken disciplinary action against a staff member after the radio station aired a call calling for people to murder Nigerian students studying here so as to prevent them from voting in the February 16 general election. Winn FM said that it “intends being a lot more vigilant in relation to what is said by callers to its talk show programmes”. The station said the incident occurred “despite a delay mechanism that allows the station to prevent the airing of such material” and that the caller, “said to be based overseas, in essence made a death threat against Nigerians”. The incident has been condemned by the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), the opposition grouping, Team Unity and the minority opposition party, the National Integrity Party (NIP). Both Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas and SKNLP chairperson Marcella Liburd said under the St. Kitts-Nevis Constitution, all Commonwealth nationals are eligible to be registered to vote provided they reside here for 12 months. “I want to say that we condemn that statement (made against the Nigerians) that was made and that we condemn all forms of violence in this country and we want all politicians to speak out against violence generally and against political violence which is what it is here. “We have never had this before and it is unfortunate that we are hearing so many threats and so many words and incitement. And I am calling on them, the Leader of the Opposition and all of the other leaders on that platform to speak out and condemn that particular statement and to speak out against violence in this upcoming election and in general, it is dangerous,” said Liburd, who is also Minister of Health, Culture and Community Development. Attorney Jonel Powell, a Team Unity candidate, has argued that foreign students in the twin island federation, including Nigerians, are not allowed to vote here and is awaiting a court decision on that matter. “The law sets out four categories for residents… the students do not fall within any particular one of these categories of residents. They actually fall under the second schedule of that Act listed as permitted entrants for the purpose of study in St. Kitts and Nevis and that is the distinction we are making between the two,” in court he said. The police statement warned that the actions and threats exhibited by the caller constitute a criminal offense and warning that persons making such statements will be prosecuted. “Media houses and hosts should use their best efforts to ensure that their outlets are not used as a conduit to facilitate criminal behavior. The general public is asked to cease and desist from expressing words or taking actions that amount to incitement to cause injury to persons for politically motivated reasons. “The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is prepared to defend all citizens and residents on the day of election. Those who choose to interfere with the democratic process through force or intimidation will be dealt with within the confines of the law. “No citizen or resident, in fact no voter legally exercising his or her right to vote, regardless of place of origin, has anything to fear on election day,” the police added.

Canadian health authorities issue Chikungunya travel warning
O
TTAWA, Canada, Monday February 2, 2014, CMC – Canadian health officials are warning nationals about the spread of the chikungunya virus, saying that, if they are planning to travel to the Caribbean or other warm destinations, they might want to take notice of a “particularly nasty disease they might encounter”. The Public Health Agency of Canada said since early 2014, there has been “an increase in travel-related chikungunya cases reported in Canada”. “This surge in Canadian infections has been associated with the incursion of chikungunya virus into the Caribbean and the expansion of the virus in the Americas,” Public Health Canada said. According to the Ottawa Citizen, more than 1 million people just this year have contacted the disease, worldwide. Originating in Africa, the virus has rapidly spread into the Caribbean and Central and South Americas, Mexico and some cases in the southern United States, the paper said. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also stated that travelers to Africa, Asia, and islands in the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific are at risk. “Often, chikungunya is compared to
dengue fever, but while chikungunya is rarely fatal its something you definitely do not want to get,” said the Ottawa Citizen, adding that several hundred Canadians are said to have been dealing with the illness. “It has gotten so bad in Jamaica that even children’s programmes on TV were instructing kids how to avoid mosquitos and what to look for when it came to symptoms,” the Citizen continued. The CDC recommends using insect repellent with DEET and cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and hats.

IS claims to have burned Jordanian pilot alive
B
EIRUT, Lebanon (AFP) – The Islamic State group released a video on Tuesday purportedly showing the burning alive of a Jordanian pilot it had captured in December. The video released online showed images of a man purported to be Maaz al-Kassasbeh engulfed in flames inside a metal cage. Kassasbeh was captured on December 24 after his F-16 jet crashed while on a mission over northern Syria as part of the US-led coalition campaign against the jihadists. The highly produced, 22-minute video shows footage of Kassasbeh sitting at a table discussing coalition operations against IS, with flags from the various Western and Arab countries in the alliance projected in the background. It then shows Kassasbeh dressed in an orange jumpsuit and surrounded by armed and masked IS fighters in camouflage. It cuts to
him standing inside the cage and apparently doused in petrol before he is burned alive. The Sunni Muslim extremist group had threatened to kill Kassasbeh unless Jordan handed over a jailed Iraqi female suicide bomber. The release of the video of the pilot's purported murder came days after IS beheaded a second Japanese hostage within a week. IS had vowed to kill the second Japanese man, Kenji Goto, and Kassasbeh by sunset on January 29 unless Amman handed over Iraqi jihadist and would-be suicide bomber Sajida al-Rishawi, who is on death row in Jordan. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Bahrain are taking part in the coalition air strikes in Syria. Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France and the Netherlands are participating in Iraq.

Haley: Deflategate will ‘haunt’ Brady
T
om Brady is tied for second all time with four Super Bowl rings, but the only man with more -- Charles Haley -- believes that the New England Patriots quarterback had to “cheat” to get his. When asked to choose between Brady and Joe Montana, with whom Haley won two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, Haley didn’t hesitate. “Joe didn’t have to cheat,” Haley told the Talk of Fame Network. “I’ve lost all respect [for Brady]. When your integrity is challenged in the game of football, to me, all his Super Bowls are tainted. “You have to say this just didn’t happen overnight. Who wants that shadow over them? I could be wrong. But I realize there were 12 balls deflated and 12 ain’t. Then you’ve got [Patriots coach Bill] Belichick coming on three different times trying to explain it. ... You know something is wrong.” Haley, who won three more Super Bowl rings with the Dallas Cowboys and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last week, was in Arizona for Super Bowl XLIX as Brady tied Montana with his fourth title as the Patriots beat the Seat-
tle Seahawks 28-24. But the stigma of Deflategate has Haley believing otherwise about Brady’s legacy. “This is what Charles Haley believes -it’s going to come back to haunt him one day,” Haley said. “If the league doesn’t come down on this guy. ... Everybody is talking about it. Nobody believes it was by accident. It is what it is. “I’m not going to take any of his Super Bowl rings away from him. But it’s sad that it has to be tainted like it is right now. Hopefully they’ll come out and let us know what really happened. Then all the mystery is gone.” The league said Jan. 23 that evidence shows the Patriots used underinflated footballs in a 45-7 victory over Indianapolis that gave them the AFC championship. The NFL said before the Super Bowl that it is still investigating but has no conclusions and no timetable for resolving the cheating accusations. Haley will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame in August along with the rest of the Class of 2015, which includes Junior Seau, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Will Shields, Mick Tingelhoff, Bill Polian and Ron Wolf.
Jets, Bills to pursue Darrelle Revis
T
he Jets are expected to pursue Revis to see if they can bring him back to New York, sources told ESPN. The Jets have already been preparing how to best make their run at Revis. As if that weren’t intriguing enough, former Jets head coach Rex Ryan -- still disappointed his former team didn’t bring Revis back last year when it had the chance -- also wants to try to bring the Pro Bowl cornerback to the Bills, sources told ESPN. The Patriots also would like to keep Revis, though they are unlikely to exercise the $20 million option in his contract for next season, which then would make him a free agent. Revis, who turns 30 in July, had two interceptions this season, his first with the Patriots. He thrived under Ryan with the Jets, reaching the Pro Bowl in four straight seasons from 2008 to 2011. Tampering charges against the Jets were filed over comments that team owner Woody Johnson made in December about Revis, and the NFL has been looking into the matter, an NFL official told ESPN. He also said he called Patriots owner Robert Kraft to “emphasize those points.”
Conditions shrink India’s chances
ndia go into this World Cup not only as the defending champions but also as one of the only three teams that have won it more than once. Had they won the World T20 final against Sri Lanka in April 2014, they would have held all three big limited-overs international trophies. In the lead-up to the World Cup, they have either been the No. 1 ODI side in the world or thereabouts. Yet you wouldn’t put them among the two or three big favorites to win the tournament. A lot of this has to do with the venues. The last time India played ODIs in Australia and New Zealand, they failed to make the final of a triangular series in Australia and went winless in a five-match bilateral series in New Zealand. India are half the side when their spinners cannot dictate terms and their spinners are unlikely to be too effective on pitches in New Zealand and Australia, though the big grounds in Australia will give them some breathing space. Between World Cups, spin bowlers have averaged the worst - 50 - in New Zealand, with an economy rate of 4.97, which is second only to 5.02 in South Africa. Little wonder that India have struggled in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. India will face another unique challenge. By the time the World Cup starts, most of their players will have played without a proper break for almost a year. If they make it to the final of the World
Cup, most of them will have been away from their homes for a stretch of 144 days, starting with a Test series and triangular series in Australia. The odds might not be stacked in India’s favor, but the field is limited and the format soft. There is no way a big team can be knocked out in the league stages unless things go nightmarishly wrong, repeatedly, and after that it is a matter of three good days. Temperament has not really been an issue for this side under MS Dhoni, the only major captain from the 2011 event to survive so long. It is not going to be easy with the conditions not in India’s favor, but with the nature of the format and shrinking competition in world cricket, don’t rule India out.
February 6-12, 2015 Caribbean Star Newspaper Dwayne Bravo quits Test Cricket
D
wayne Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, has announced his retirement from Test cricket, but wants to continue representing the side in limited-overs games. Bravo had not played Tests since December 2010, and his decision comes after he lost the ODI captaincy to Jason Holder and was then axed from the one-day side for the tour of South Africa and also the World Cup. West Indies had pulled out from their tour of India last year under Bravo’s leadership over a payment dispute with their board and players association. His subsequent removal from the squad had led to allegations of victimization from his lawyer, but chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd had said there was no axe to grind. Bravo was picked for the T20 internationals against South Africa and was also given a central contract by the board. In the statement announcing his retirement, Bravo said it was a “difficult time” for West Indies cricket and those associated with it, but added that he still wanted to “serve” the fraternity with “the pride of being a West Indian.” “Today I am announcing my retirement from Test cricket,” Bravo said. “I have al-
ready informed the WICB of this decision and also indicated my desire to continue to represent the West Indies in the shorter formats of the game. “Over the years, with the greatest enthusiasm, I have done my best with the deep awareness that I am ultimately representing the people of the game. “I recognize that this is a difficult time for all of us. Our people of the region have seen and enjoyed great cricketing days but we will not return to glory until we agree to go forward with our love for the game and the respect of the administrators, players and the public. “I have experienced the exhilarating joy of victory and the devastating pain of defeat. The joyous memories will remind me of what we are capable of achieving. I want to be part of that mission. “I thank the cricketing fraternity for their support and look forward to serving you with determination and the pride of being a West Indian.” Bravo scored 2200 runs in 40 Tests at an average of 31.42 with three centuries and picked up 86 wickets at 39.83 with two five-fors.

Michael Clarke bats, bowls as comeback gathers pace
M Hussey joins South Africa as World Cup consultant
F
ormer Australian Test batsman Mike Hussey has been drafted in by South Africa as a consultant during the World Cup, with the Proteas looking to win the tournament for the first time. As well as playing 79 Tests, Hussey, who retired in 2013, is regarded as one of Australia’s greatest one-day players, averaging 48.15 from his 185 internationals. His manager confirmed to the Cricket Australia website that the 39-year-old would attend training sessions and give advice to the South Africans on how to play in Australian conditions. “We’ve had some discussions with Mike Hussey about him joining us on a consultancy process,” South Africa coach Russell
Domingo said. “He’s a middle-order batter of immense experience and knows conditions very well in Australia. He’ll play a very low-key role in the background.” The future of Hussey, who has continued to play in the Indian Premier League and the domestic Big Bash League, has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks. Reports last month suggested he could replace Duncan Fletcher as India coach, although Hussey denied any links to the job. The World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, gets underway on February 14. South Africa’s opening game comes a day later against Zimbabwe.
ichael Clarke’s comeback from injury gathered pace Thursday with the Australian captain bowling two overs and knocking a breezy 34 for a Cricket Australia XI against Bangladesh. The 33-year-old was forced onto the sidelines after the first Test against India in December with a serious hamstring injury that required surgery, and is battling to be fit for the World Cup starting next week. Clarke hit 51 for a local Sydney team on Saturday in his first outing since then and Thursday took to the Allan Border Field in Brisbane, fielding on the boundary rope and in the slips and even bowling two overs of spin in the unofficial one-dayer. He looked untroubled before departing after two hours, presumably to the physio’s table. Clarke returned for a 47-minute bat, stroking 34 from 36 balls before being undone by the leg-spin of Sabbir Rahman. Cricket Australia have given Clarke until Australia’s second pool match against Bangladesh on February 21 to prove his fitness for the World Cup. Coach Darren Lehmann on Wednesday suggested Clarke could resume playing earlier than expected, saying “fingers

Melo: ‘Now it’s my turn’ to host ASG
REENBURGH, N.Y. -- A week from now, Carmelo Anthony will be New York’s All-Star ambassador as the NBA’s best visit his stomping grounds. And for once, the New York Knicks star is looking forward to being in the position of asking some of his fellow All-Stars about their futures instead of being the one fielding all the questions about what he’s going to do and where he will be playing. At last year’s All-Star Game, Chicago Bullscenter Joakim Noah approached Anthony about the possibility of signing with the Bulls in free agency, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard. “That was kind of the talk of All-Star weekend last year,” Anthony said when asked if players were asking him what he was going to do at last year’s All-Star Game with his free agency coming up. “I’ve had that experience maybe twice now, last year and then the (All-Star game) in L.A. a couple of years back right before I got (traded) to New York. “Now it’s my turn!” Anthony playfully said with a smile. “Now it’s my turn to extend the favor.” With the NBA’s biggest stars spending a weekend in the city, the Knicks are certainly hoping New York will make an impression on some of the stars who will become free agents in the near future.
Team president Phil Jackson has cleared cap space to go after free agents this summer and could have $30 million to play with this summer along with a high lottery pick to use. Anthony -- who went through his own recruiting tour last summer before re-signing with the Knicks for a fiveyear, $124 million deal -- is hoping that Madison Square Garden will impress the players when the lights come on for the league’s showcase game. “I think everybody will be on their own kind of zone on All-Star weekend,” Anthony said about whether a weekend in New York City can become a recruiting tool. “The real effect that they will feel will be during the game here at the Garden, kind of seeing what the Garden has to offer, not just for New York Knicks but for (big events overall). “And that is a big moment -- that Sunday in the All-Star Game,” Anthony continued. “So the Garden will be lit up, it will be bright. There will be a lot of people in there. It will be loud and it will be exciting. So for other players to see that, I am pretty sure that will be impressive.” Anthony is looking forward to playing the role of New York’s All-Star host. “I think it will create some great momentum here in the city just by having
Yoan Moncada to the Yankees?

he Super Bowl is over and spring training is just a little more than two weeks away. In the interim and perhaps beyond, the name Yoan Moncada may be in the forefront of Yankees news. Moncada, a 19-year-old Cuban, is on the verge of being eligible to sign with a major league club. He is an infielder – varying scouting reports have him slated as second or third baseman, or a shortstop – who might turn into a Robinson Cano-type hitter. Basically, if he were in the amateur draft, he very well might be the No. 1 pick. Instead, he will be a free agent, eligible to sign with any team. The Yankees are considered favorites to land him because, well, they’re the Yankees. Moncada will only cost money and the Yankees may go in full, like they did for Masahiro Tanaka a year ago. Since the Yankees have already far exceeded their international pool base, there is no limitation on what they can spend on Moncada. However, they will be taxed at a 100 percent rate, which is a similar circumstance to other clubs who spent heavily this past year. The bidding is expected to be in the tens of millions. (If, in the unlikely event Moncada is ineligible to sign until after June, the Yankees would be eliminated from signing Moncada because they have exceeded their international pool for this fiscal year. This means next year they can only sign players for $300,000 max, which won’t get it done with Moncada.) But when you talk about the next potential Core Four, it could be Masahiro Tanaka, Dellin Betances, Aaron Judge and Moncada. Moncada is a long way away. First, the Yanks must sign him. Then, it seems, he would begin in the minors. For the dough the Yanks are going to need to spend on him, Moncada could be in the big leagues sooner than later.
Bob Donnan/USA TODAY SportsCarmelo Anthony is looking forward to serving as New York’s ambassador for the 2015 All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden. All-Star weekend in New York,” Anthony said. “The energy that will be surrounding the city kind of starting on Monday all through the week. ... And just for me to kind of be that ambassador for the city for the weekend, that means a lot that I can represent New York here in my hometown. Kind of welcome everybody here to have a good time for the week-
end.” And if New York ends up impressing players whose contracts are up this summer or next, all the better for Anthony and the Knicks. “For the most part, I think guys pretty much know New York (City). ... It is just a matter of kind of knowing and learning the Knicks organization,” Anthony said.
West Indies in need of redemption
W
est Indies come to the World Cup looking to redeem a reputation tarnished by the events of 2014. The aborted tour of India due to a contracts dispute between the squad led by Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies Players Association and the West Indies Cricket Board fractured opinion in the West Indian community, and largely caused dismay among the cricket-loving public. More critically, there were casualties. Amid claims of victimization in many quarters and equally strong denials by chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd and president of the WICB Dave Cameron, Bravo and senior allrounder Kieron Pollard found themselves surplus to requirements for the World Cup. Taking Bravo’s place at the helm is 23-year-old budding allrounder Jason Holder, the youngest man ever to captain West Indies, and a player who had just 21 ODIs behind him before the appointment. His will be the weighty task of galvanizing a team still carrying the baggage of India with them to Australia and New Zealand, and having to deal with an assignment that was already going to be difficult. Stuck in the lower half of the ODI rankings, the two-time former World Cup winners cannot, on statistics, be considered tournament favorites, especially since they have struggled to win with any regularity against the sides ranked above them. Howev-
er, with power-hitting batsmen like Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Darren Sammy, the classy Marlon Samuels, West Indies have the batting personnel to have a decent tournament. Their bowling, however, has suffered after offspinner Sunil Narine withdrew from the squad to give himself more time to work on his action, which was reported as suspect during the 2014 Champions League T20 in India. Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller has been picked to fill Narine’s shoes. World Cup pedigree As winners of the first two World Cups and three-time finalists, West Indies had set the benchmark for excellence in the limited-overs format. They have long since fallen away from their own lofty standards. West Indies have not been to a final since they famously failed to complete the hattrick in 1983 against India at Lord’s. Only once since - in 1996 - have they reached the semi-final stage. Yet, they retain sufficient players who on their day can turn any game. The elusive trick for them is to string enough of those days together as a team. X-factor All 11 players can fit the description because of the mercurial nature of the squad. However, should Andre Russell pick his moments to attack a little better, his awesome hitting ability can take a match away from any side; his seam bowling can deliver im-
portant wickets, while his often stupendous work in the outfield can do similarly. Known primarily as a Twenty20 specialist, Russell is nevertheless the type of player to pull an important game out of the fire, even in 50-over cricket. He recently showed a glimpse of that against South Africa where his 64 off 40 deliveries lifted West Indies to a one-wicket win. Squad Jason Holder (capt), Marlon Samuels (v-c), Sulieman Benn, Darren Bravo, Jonathan Carter, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Nikita Miller, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith, Jerome Taylor Fixtures • February 16 - v Ireland, Nelson • February 21 - v Pakistan, Christchurch • February 24 - v Zimbabwe, Canberra • February 27 - v South Africa, Sydney • March 6 - v India, Perth • March 15 - v UAE, Napier Prediction In 2011, West Indies got to the quarter-final stage and a last-eight finish remains a realistic goal. To get to the semi-finals, however, would require consistency of play currently missing. The troubles of 2014 can, however, act as a galvanizing force if the players see it as a means to redeem their reputation as team.
