We are delighted to be presenting a group of handmade works on paper, paintings and prints by Tricia Wright. Like so much of the work we represent at the barn, Wright’s works address the artist’s association with nature. Fortunate enough to live with bountiful gardens, her work reflects the daily gifts we receive from a less mechanized environment. Similar to seeing a flower buzzed by a bee, a frog resting in a pond, or the first snow drops in winter beckoning spring, Wright’s work reminds us to contemplate the bountiful life we share with so many beautiful living things.
These artworks reflect on our relationship to the natural world, and explore ideas about intimacy, time, and the self. Poetry informs and inspires the work, most notably texts by Seamus Heaney, T.S. Eliot, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Salvador Rueda. Some artworks incorporate words in tandem with the imagery, expanding their meaning and inviting a contemplative experience. This exhibition presents a recent body of works in handmade paper produced at Dieu Donné in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard, together with a group of paintings on linen exploring related content. The handmade paper process begins and ends with the hand, starting out as line drawings of my own hand and other living organisms, from which I generate custom 3-D printed forms. These are used to emboss handmade papers pigmented in cream, blue, mushroom, green, and pink. I further manipulate the surface of the paper by hand, intensifying definition and expression, before gilding the embossed areas with gold leaf in hues ranging from 12 to 24 karats. The exhibition, Tricia Wright: Glimmer opens on December 5th and will run to January 10th. We hope you will get time to visit this beautiful exhibition during the busy holiday season.
