Ronna S Harris
TURBULENCE. My work is rooted in tradition. I believe color, composition and drawing are equal components of my art making. However, my paintings communicate a state of controlled chaos as I combine two divergent forces and approaches: realism and abstract expression. My subject matter revolves around water, reflections and self-discovery. By proficient handling of light, a mastery of images and a skillful mark making, my paintings confer an illusion of reality to something that’s not real. My philosophy is art is magic, and magic is illusion.
RONNA S. HARRIS is a painter and has been a member of the Tulane University faculty since 1989. Ronna has exhibited nationally in numerous galleries and museums and is included in six museum’s permanent collections. Ronna was also included in the Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea, Florence Biennale, Florence, Italy and the Scope Basel, Amsterdam. The White House Historical Society commissioned her to create an original work, The East Sitting Room, the painting became a permanent part of the exhibition, White House Impressions: The President’s House Through the Eye of the Artist. She has been featured in eight books, the most recent New American Paintings 130, and awarded Editor’s Selection. Also this year Ronna S. Harris was featured in a one person show Inside Looking Out / Outside Looking In: Paintings at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, Blowing Rock, North Carolina. She is represented by Steven Callan at Callan Fine Art. www.annagreenart.com 8 • Art & Beyond • December 2018

GHOSTS CAN DANCE. Oil on Canvas, 38cm x 30cm. 2018
I have been painting for almost 20 years. Residing now in the northwest for almost 10 years. I began my artistic journey in the East of France and then in the north of Spain, where I was fortunate to open a gallery and studio I try to convey upon my canvas that which stirs me emotionally and spiritually as well as my personal experiences
with the esoterics and spirituality. Sometimes a painting will appear to me as a vision and other times from intuition. I hope the vibrant colors and symbolism in my works to have a positive effect upon the viewer, space and any environment. Welcome to my journey. umaaslam.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 9

It does matter how you live, what you create, if you are going to have children, and what you are going to leave to them and their children as well. It does matter how much enlightenment you achieve! Every one of us has his own inner world made out of experience and personal learning within the system.

final goal, the inspiration for my pictures: To create tolerant, creative and cooperative systems that are heading toward a spiritual unity. Jenny Souter
IMMERSION. Acrylic, 8" x 10"
JENNY SOUTER was born and raised in Sandusky, Ohio. At a young age, Jenni knew that she loved to create art and her mother provided her with her first art supplies. Jen decided to pursue her career in art in 5th grade. Her mother, who was an English teacher, and her high school art teacher charted her path and explained to her that it was better to be an art major and so she majored in painting in Bowling Green State University. She graduated In 1994, receiving her K-12 teaching certification and soon began her career as an art teacher. She has taught over 10000 students and has inspired them to do their best and that their best is amazing. She was reading an art history book to them one day and the artist said, "I need to stop planning on trying to be a famous artist and 12 • Art & Beyond • December 2018
just pursue it." A light went off for Ms. Souter. She began to create more and more personal art from her heart. She read "a famous artist is famous because she continues to make art( as she has) throughout their lifetime." She began entering art contests, began to get her name out there and published on her own website. She had a wonderful lady ask to have her art published in her magazine. She has been published five times, most recently in the publishing program for Miami, Florida Dot Spectrum, released Dec 5. Gratefully, she recently was invited to the New York where she will be showing her work and plans to be there April 4-7. www.jennisouterartist.com

GOLD ERA. Mixed Media, 30cm x 30cm
Hui-ju Chen (Mickey) HUI-JU CHEN (MICKEY) graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Even though she has not been using art and design as her main profession, she has kept her passion of making art until today. Along with her teaching job at Shantou University, she always finds time to create various styles of work. It is interesting to see how her work has varied from photography to acrylic painting to mixed-media to collage. She hopes to keep being experimental because she believes that, in the art world, there are no real errors but different thoughts and processes with different outcomes. Without experimentation, she feels, art is not art. She gets inspiration from different aspects of life. She always hopes to learn and create different kinds of work by making use of her own different life experiences.
14 • Art & Beyond • December 2018
It is normal to have lots of frustrations and doubts as one goes through the phases of creation. For Mickey, the biggest frustration has been the temptation and pressure to build and keep up one particular style in order to be a professional artist. Though it is true that a dedication to one style may enable one to come a little closer to perfection in that style, Mickey feels that art is about taking risks. If she is satisfied with one style, she believes that she loses a very important quality of art--the excitement of experiencing different things in the world. Therefore, she hopes to continue working in different ways and experimenting with different styles. Art making, for her, is not just a way to express herself but a way to define her existence. www.ratgoofy.com

SPOTTY. Acrylic on canvas, 8”X10”. SPOTTY. Award
Natalya B Parris “Spotty” is painting of Natalya B. Parris’s beloved pet fish. She tried to paint it as accurately as possible to the subject in her unique artistic style - “Emotional Counterpoints in Paint – Dots” where perfectly round dots are overlaid onto sections of a previously painted picture. She piles the dots on one another to create a three-dimensional painting. This painting won First Place at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair 2018 in Gaithersburg, MD. Natalya is a strong believer in contributing to the community by promoting art awareness and education. This is why she likes to display her artworks at agricultural fairs, community centers, and public libraries. By visiting those places, children from a very young age have an opportunity to see diverse art media and learn that the world is very colorful with many unique ways to express
yourself such as writing books or creating an artwork. This summer she taught Multi-Arts Discovery Camp for children at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown MD. Natalya also teaches art classes for children and adults at the Arts Barn, Gaithersburg, MD and through the art, she explains to her students that there is a place for every individual to express their inner world; there are as many options as there are souls. Natalya hopes her artworks encourage each adult to look at the world around them as they did when they were children; to be very open-minded and curious about new things. Perhaps, within their souls, they can find a hidden door to the room where they locked all their childhood fantasies and dreams.
