URBAN PATTERN, Acrylic on Canvas, 24x26

Maruka Carvajal I was born in Bolivia, and I am a naturalized Spaniard. I have lived in Brazil, Singapore, Colombia, and currently in Washington DC. I was educated to be an architect but my passion led me to dedicate myself to the visual arts instead. I enjoy painting so much! It is a chance to get involved with my thoughts, my memories and my feelings; it's my moment. When I start a painting I always choose colors first; without thinking maybe it's just intuitively or sometimes based on my mood. In my art I like to explore the abstract secrets of cities I have lived in, cities I have passed through, and cities I hope to visit. I bring out the similarities between cities around the world, capturing their true nature. Using different shapes, lines, and vibrant colors I interpret onto my canvas the emotions that cities awaken inside of me. I recall my experiences in different cities that have impacted me and I look into that past at the feelings that came over me in those moments. Some artists inspire me, especially Hans Hoffman because of his exuberant use of color, the relationship between them, and the spatial tension.

I use different acrylics in different to express myself. My strokes reflect my visual language and respond to the impulse to fill the canvas. Using geometric shapes adds structural order to how freely I use colors. In addition, I like to use both paint that is slightly watered down and pain that is thicker. To me this combination of shapes and my free use of colors along with varying viscosities of paint is the most appealing part of my creative process. The colorful nature of my painting makes them stand out and appear bright. Vibrant colors are very powerful tools and I am able to manage their effect on a composition. I am fascinated by cities because they are short-lived but form a long lasting memory. I think my paintings serve the purpose I intended and convey what I want them to. My goal is to make the viewer curious about the meaning behind my painting. I expect my work to represent the places that I have had the fortune to visit or have lived in and I hope it shares these places with the viewer inviting them to take an emotional journey where their spirit can drive free. www.marukacarvajal.com

CIAO ITALY ALBUM. Watercolor and ink in a traditional Chinese style,15" x 22"

Debbi Chan Born and raised in the metropolis of Houston where the glare of sunlit skyscrapers the landscape I was most familiar with did not stop the smooth transition to a landscape of pines and snow in Idaho. What the surprise move did was open my creative mind and allow me to expand and my art to grow. I took up three new mediums and set my schedule to allow for art to be the focus of my time. The mediums were new but I managed to keep to the traditional Chinese style which I took up almost 15 years ago. Days for me are all about art . Making it keeps me busy and rarely does a day go by without it. If not painting I am gathering for it. Looking out my windows I see the vastness of nature about me and watch wildlife romping that I previously could only have seen in a zoo behind bars. My tight drawings loosened and the subjects I once was afraid of painting flow across the leaves of 70 ft. Continuous story

paintings in jumbo folding albums, my newest passion. They are being shown currently at Magnuson Gallery in Kendrick Idaho while awaiting a future home hopefully with WSU in their art museum. After completion I now publish each album as a wordless magazine and make them available to the public. And now the albums are coming to life in galleries you can carry in your pocket. The amazing 3-D app EXHIBBIT allows me to have entire albums on the wall. I have two shows open to the public now and a third will be open any day. You will most likely run into my blogs as well. Hopefully the albums will find their way to a permanent museum that appreciates story telling with art and without words. My time is still about making the art. If you don't make it you have nothing for others to see. http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/s/sosum

BALLERINA. Acrylic on Canvas, 80 cm x 120 cm

Gabi Domenig was born in 1963 in Lienz. Since her early childhood she was attracted to the fine arts, but especially to painting. Gabi took classes in nude painting, color theory, drawing and composition. Especially charcoal, red chalk and pastels on paper and primed wood panels were the medium in the nineties. After her first exhibition in 1999, when she presented 20 large pastel paintings to the public, she began to paint with acrylics on canvas. The strong and bright colors and the way of working with acrylics approached very well to her nature. She concerns herself primarily with the representation of man and especially of women. She tries to capture moments and to build up emotional tensions. The viewer should feel something of her passion when she paints. She does´nt want to stir up. For her art should be life-affirming and beautiful, touching and connecting. A language without words. 14 • Art & Beyond • July/August 2015

Her characters send out varied emotions such as pride, pain, love, sadness, loneliness, joy and longing. They are sensuous, strong, vulnerable, thoughtful, dreamy, seductive, promising and cautious. The figures are mostely located in a particular environment cutout. The expression of the eyes should draw the viewer into its spell and animate him to enter in a deeper communication with the figures in the picture. Flowers, plants, animals, patterns and landscape sections are decorative parts, but are usually situated in the background. Because of her intensive color palette and the figurative painting she is attributed to the Neo-Expressionism. You can find her images in privat collections, in international art books, art magazines and online art galleries. Participation in many national and international exhibitions in Austria, Germany, France, Italy United Kingdom, USA and Brazil. www.domenigartdesign.at

THE ARTIST. Mixed Media on Paper, 22" x 40"

Nira Chorev For me, being an artist is my way of finding my place in life – creating art is like creating a map that keeps me from getting lost in the world. My art is guided by three key points: focusing, developing and creating. I focus on an object, a landscape or an idea that has touched me, and then develop a way to create art that expresses the essence of what I am feeling and seeing. For me this can be through painting, photography or a combination of both. I work through an idea with a series of paintings – whether I am painting a rock, a tree or a landscape I push my art to get to the fundamental nature of what I am painting. Moving closer, looking at all angles and going deeply into the subject. I work with oil, pastel, acrylic and mixed media – seeking the best approach to convey my vision. When I am painting I will often use photography as a means of documenting a landscape so that I back in my studio I can look more fully into the shapes, light and key elements of a scene. In my mixed media work I incorporate pieces of a photograph into the composition. All of my art is about using my unique vision as an artist to share with viewers something of what I felt at the moment I created this artwork. http:nirachorev.wordpress.com

SILENCE. Mixed Media on Paper, 14" x 11" Won Honorable Mention at the Maryland State Fair 2004.

Natalya B. Parris is a well known artist and art instructor who has been teaching children and adults for over 9 years at the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg; BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown; and Sunrise at Montgomery Village, MD. Summer 2015 is a busy time for her as she will be teaching “Exploring the World through Art” Camp at the Arts Barn in June and August and it is her second summer as an Assistant Director at the Summer Fun Center, Damascus, Maryland. As a professional artist she is preparing a solo exhibit “Enchanted Fantasies, Paintings by Natalya B. Parris” at Margaret W. and Joseph L. Fisher Art Gallery located on the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College July 17 - September 6, 2015. Because this Gallery is associated with students, her choice of the artworks is based on her experience not only as an artist, but primarily as an art instructor. Her vision is for this exhibit to be a discovery and learning adventure. The artworks on display will be step-by-step examples: from the

18 • Art & Beyond • July/August 2015

first acrylic drawing on the canvas; to the “add colors to the drawings” artworks; and “final step” - dots artworks. Also on display will be the artworks that are connected to her Russian roots. They are modern interpretations of Russian Folk Art that she taught to students. She added to them her unique artistic style - “Emotional Counterpoints in Paint – Dots” where perfectly round dots are overlaid onto sections of a previously-painted picture. To express very powerful emotions, she piles the dots on one another and the dots, like music notes, interact with the rhythm of the melody - creating emotional counterpoints in a three-dimensional painting. She is working on finishing new paintings that will be on display for the first time. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Natalya-B-Parris/111488538880248 www.linkedin.com/pub/natalya-parris/18/a1b/820/ https://artavita.com/artists/8737-natalya-b-parris privatenbp@hotmail.com

TRADITION. Acrylic, 24" x 24"

Gayane Karapetyan (Gaya) Gaya (Gayane Karapetyan) is an independent contemporary artist. She is painting in acrylics with a focus on abstract artwork. Gaya’s paintings can be described as continuous abstract variations on the theme of the beauty of nature. They associatively correlate and thematically complement each other. From the pure abstraction perspective, she pursues to introduce colours as unconventional identifiers of the nature themes. The common theme of her creation infers the artist’s abstractive reflection on, and interpretation of, the natural world and phenomena. The intent is to show the captivating power of colour of the landscapes and seascapes, light refractions in the texture of flowers, mysterious fluctuations of water and deviational patterns of the moving natural forms.

The overarching cultural concerns and social message of Gaya’s work focus on demonstrating beauty and power of the nature as a cradle of humanity and intransigent essence of our lives. The nature is a value on its own which should be preserved and not compromised. Environmental context includes the harmony within the nature as well as in the human interaction with the nature. Music is that powerful source of inspiration which induces the emotional background to free the imagination and to reach the point of abstractive expression at which Gaya creates. http://GayaArtStudio.com

Sandy Den Hartog Sandy has had an interest in stones since childhood. Wherever she went, even as a young person, whether it was picnics, vacations, or field trips; she always made sure she had a cup along to collect rocks which were precious to her at the time. Once in high school she took numerous classes in gemology and geology. Then she graduated, got married, and had children. Rocks and gems had to be put on hold for a while. However, she was still able to attend gem shows and art shows when she had the opportunity. She was looking and learning and eventually was able to travel the globe and reignite her interest in gems and minerals. She was struck by how much stones, rocks, gems, and minerals change

from country to country. In bringing back Ethiopian Crosses from Africa, she made her daughters and granddaughters necklaces with the crosses. She was once again hooked with a creative passion for what she could now do with these artifacts. Sandy’s work has been exhibited at Palace Hotel in San Francisco and the James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. She has also been a part of several juried shows winning a first place medal in 2010 and 2012 with a Award of Merit in 2012. stitches1@suddenlink.net

A GHOST OF HER 2. Digital Art.

Ileana Collazo I learned all I needed about creating art as a young girl in my grandmother’s garden—where I sat doing what as an adult I call meditating—that quiet spot became my temple. Many years passed before I began to give birth to the creations conceived in my early daydreams. For a while, I wrote fiction and poetry, but then my mind exploded into a galaxy of colors, shapes, and, movement. I began to paint— small pencil renderings became color temptations that led me down the path to my “Night Gardens Collection”. From there, it was a matter of “following the yellow brick road”. Today I paint flowers, bursts of abstracted shapes and colors, geometrical excursions, digital paintings and digital

re-constructions of my paintings, GRAMFFITI (the first graffiti made by a grandma, for which I was baptized: IC the G), and have also embarked on digital photography. I create small worlds of movement, colors, and shapes to entice the observer to travel through my work surface—colliding with the images, finding their way around to yet another shape, and finding it as alluring to linger gazing at them as I still find it to linger in a garden; my work is also representative of the twists, turns, bumps, and alternatives each of us transverses in the course of our daily life. https://www.facebook.com/ileana.collazo.54/photos_albums

Sue Eves I endeavor to capture fleeting moments we are vaguely aware of. Process is important to me. I work systematically, pushing forward from something I know to test how marks can suggest something strange yet familiar. Like Auerbach, "I'm hoping to make a new thing"..."that remains in the mind". [Hughes.1990]. The audience is required to interact with the pieces to find something that resonates. Collages are made from images of heads I have painted, which are cut up and reconfigured. Each image is made from a choice of the same elements so share certain similarities, yet differ because of the way they have been reformed. A lot like ourselves. Each collage has been photographed, this process further modifies the image. The sections from which the images are

composed remain partially visible so that, when viewed close up, one is aware of the transient nature of what we observe. As Giacometti says "we cannot think about our present thought, it slips away as we try to grasp it". [Sylvester 1965]. The images are bright against a dark ground, suggesting those "illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark" [Woolf, 1927]. Each represent a brief moment in time and a visual realisation of a point in my artistic development. Hughes.R.Frank Auerbach. [1990]. Thames and Hudson.Ltd. Sylvester.D. Alberto Giacometti. [1965]. Dan McCormack studied Photography from 1962 - 1967 at the Institute of Design in Chicago and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1967 to 1970. I began photographing the nude with Wendy, my wife, while in graduate school. Then for over forty years I explored various techniques and processes while photographing the nude as a central theme. In 1976, I joined the Board of Directors of the Catskill Center for Photography and served as Vice President of the Board for ten years. One of my responsibilities was the installation of every show during those formative years.

oatmeal box pinhole camera to make 8x10 inch B&W negatives. With its extreme wide angle and distortion, the camera gives me results that are constantly a surprise. I develop the B&W negatives, scan them into Photoshop, and then colorize the image by pulling curves in each of the channels. I make an images rooted in 16th Century pinhole optics juxtaposed with 21st Century digital print manipulations. These newest photographs of mine are a hybrid of Photography and Digital Printmaking.

I have taught photography at Purdue University, Pratt Institute, SUNY New Paltz, Bard College, Ramapo College and Mercy College before I came to Marist College twenty years ago. I currently head the photography program at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

From January to February 2010 I had a solo show at the Photography Center of the Capitol District in Troy, NY. I showed over fifty images from ten diverse series made from 1990 to 2010. And in May 2013 I have a solo show, “Nude at Home”, twenty-six images made from 2003 to 2012 at the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.

In 1998 I began to work with pinhole photography. I use an

AUTUMN. Digital Art.

Diana Whiley I first created fantasy art to go with my writing and found that the digital medium best fit my style. It took time to get the affect I wanted but I’ve now hopefully managed to get the colour and mood right. I am transformed by the creation of art and enjoy opening myself to new experiences. Other pieces of my art range from abstract, to still life but I do love a portrait. Over a number of years I have been both editor and contributor to a number of community art projects and exhibit locally. Entering many on-line competition, I have won several

awards: “Best in Competition” With “Your Choice Award” at the on-line website this year at “Exhibition Without Walls” being a highlight. I have book covers published and appear in five International Contemporary Art Books. Currently I am working on a graphic novel and look forward to creating more art. www.anabela-artist.com

Martin G. Schoffel - Venezuela / INVITED ARTIST Martin G. Shoffel, a Venezuelan-Austrian artist will be exhibiting for first time his Kinetic Art at Art Santa Fe. He is represented by Contemporary Art Projects USA. At this exhibition, Martin will feature as the Invited Artist showcasing a Complete Insstalltion of his unique technique. From a very young age Martin Schoffel discovered his love for art and started working with freehand geometric drawings. After several years, his art turned into a passion for geometric and kinetic art. At the beginning of his artistic career he used simple materials like paper and pencil, later his interest for colors grows as well as for new materials such as wood, acrylics, aluminum and photography among others. This experience enhanced his work and reinforced his desire to create movement effects in his art with overlaid elements and edited images. As a result we found all his pieces classified into the so-called Kinetic Art. www.mgschoffel.com

GIRASOLES EN SANTA FE. MURAL. Acrylic, Oil and Spray on Light Concrete, 70" x 94"

Ricardo Cardenas. a Young Mexican Artist Ricardo Cardenas, arises by merging his large blocks of concrete with good painting, influenced by the prominent muralist movement of his homeland, Mexico. The Artist refers to his painting as “they express my feelings and passion for art”. That's right, they are work pieces combining cubist, abstract and figurative strokes, giving strength to the characters of everyday life. The variation of colors of their culture, the exuberant flora and scenes of urban life are the source of inspiration for this young Mexican artist. Likewise, Ricardo has managed to cope with exquisite pictorial distress in their concrete, putting his knowledge of civil engineering to provide the perfect solutions methods to mount his heavy artwork on the wall of many collectors thru the world. PURE CONSCIOUSNESS I5. Acrylic on Canvas, 30" x 35"

SUREKHA SADANA - DUBAI I would describe myself as a spiritual explorer. Since a very tender age I used to read the great Indian epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Vedanta. At that time I wasn’t aware about the real philosophy behind those magical words but when I grew up I started relating their principles and teachings in actual life. During this process of becoming mindful, I realized that there is a higher purpose in life and also another state of consciousness beyond the normal waking, sleeping or dreaming state viz; a state of nonattachment, a silent state of inner wakefulness with no object of thought or perception. This withdrawal from indulgence opened doors to the inner world where I came across the magical concept of the awakening of Kundalini, chakras, yantras and the other tools of meditation. The last few years were particularly important for my spiritual and art journey since I started doing regularly and systematically meditation. For me meditating or painting both are the way of connecting to the higher self and both compliment each other beautifully. While I am in the process of creating I become one with that work and it brings me to the present moment, and makes me aware and attentive, peaceful and quite. In my works I aim to portray the central quest of my spirituality which is to achieve total experience with the one. www.surekhasadana.com 40 • Art & Beyond • July/August 2015

FRIDA IN A FOREST OF LEAVES. Mixed Media, 36" x 36"

Eva Rimsky - Chile In these last years’ painting, it has become an essential building block of my existence. Mixing colors, textures, combining both, have permitted me to release emotions and at the same time dream up visions of my own personal reality. The onset of my artistic career was deeply influenced by a second migration. The intense pain resulting from it, the adaptation, its consequences and the losses I felt at the time, found its expression in a canvas. Painting embodied a new language through which I was able to communicate feelings, experiences and uneasiness. Nowadays, painting has turned into a genuine passion and component of the air I breathe. MOTHER NATURE #1. Oil on Canvas, 20" x 20"

REBECA BIBAS - COLOMBIA Rebeca Bibas, better known as “Becky”, was born in Cali, Colombia, and she had been exposed to the arts since she was a little girl. Born in a family of art collectors and art dealers, her brothers have represented and promoted masters of Latin-American art. Her early years, she received training in most of the art disciplines; acting, ballet, contemporary dancing and piano, just to name a few. Becky was a well-traveled young woman, whose artistic interest made art galleries, museums, and historical landmarks her priority when exploring other countries and cultures. This provided her with an extensive, but non-formal education in the visual arts. As a result of many years of exposure, knowledge, and experience in the artistic field, a new chapter of her life would begin to unfold. With bright colors, bold strokes, and with a delicate balance, she started expressing her visions of a world where beauty is paramount. The artist has continued her artistic expression by painting flora in countless different ways and manners as in the case of “Mother Nature”. A Set of 8 Individual Pieces where the artist expresses her love and admiration for the flora thru different colors and brushstrokes. She hopes to bring the happiness that art brought to her to all who will have the opportunity to view her work. www.rebecabibas.com 46 • Art & Beyond • July/August 2015

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE I. Mixed Media, 20" x 20"

Tania Bakalarz - Colombia A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE SERIES “To look at the world thru an alternate lens is to seek the good in humanity and the joy in life” To overcome hardships, pain and suffering is to jumpstart life. To seek hope and internal peace through reflections is to discover light and wisdom. To grasp on to the smile of a child, the colors in the sky, and the cool breeze on a hot day, the warmth of a loved one, is to believe in constructing as opposed to disrupting. It only takes a split second to discover enlightening and embrace it. In “A Different Perspective” embellishment with diamonds symbolizes the impact of reflection to illustrate and distinguish the essence of the worthiness of life. The lens is the means to ascertain the goal. “A Different Perspective” is a transition of my work by seeking and gathering what I perceive as valuable instances of life from a fresh and distinct approach. www.taniabakalarzart.com 48 • Art & Beyond • July/August 2015

DANCING WITH THE SUN OF CHOPIN. Oil on Canvas, 30" x 20”

Lorena F. Fernandez - Colombia NEW CENTURY LANDSCAPE SERIES Lorena has been the symbol of evolution, and her work is the expression of one who moved from the purely conventional and academic to finding a proposal that would describe the reality of our current century. She was touched by concern over the global system, the warming of our planet, the loss of significance among human beings, concrete buildings, as well as the absence of the romantic landscape we had in the past, in which half of the work dealt with the immensity of the sky; her current creations deal with urban landscape, visual contamination, loss of spaces, turning her horizons in a chromatic play of aesthetics where the treatment of color commits her to the execution of knowledge of the theory behind it. In this scope of things, we have also lost the sky, and this romantic concept has intentionally disappeared from her work, clearly leaving a minute significance of what is wrongly called development. Her recent creations have begun to contaminate with the color of industry, black, gray and dirt tones, and this array of the palette starts taking over, setting aside romantic colors, spreading over the whole of her work, turning immensity into a paradigm that bluntly lessens human preponderance. Her clearest referral is found in her work “Imbalance”, where she makes us feel the catastrophically earthquake in Chile; or in “Urban Vegetation”, where we perceive a “plantation” of concrete street light posts, linked to a web of electricity and communication wires; or “Landslide”, which reflects an spiritual anxiety concerning natural disasters; or more defined, as with the series “Industrial Zone”, where the consequences for disrespecting the environment are made visible. EL ABRAZO DE AMOR. Digital Print on Transparent Acrylic with Laser Engraving, 22" x 31.5"

MARIA FERNANDA LAIRET - VENEZUELA The artist will be exhibiting an installation composed of her series “Global Narratives”. The Feature Piece called “El Abrazo de Amor” in which the artist utilizes her technique of managing money symbols. She uses the $500 bill of the Bank of Mexico. Frida Kahlo appears with her self-portrait of 1940 in the front of the bill and Diego Rivera in the back. She took Diego Rivera image and Mr. Xolotl, to the front where the painting "The Love Embrace of the Universe" by Frida Kahlo was the inspiring of my artwork. Then, Diego was incorporated thru colorless laser on Plexiglas with the embrace of love that Frida had for him. Thru this analysis, the artist tries to highlight the significance of the elements of the artwork relating to the social context of Frida and the relationship to her personal life. The artwork point out the details of her personality, aspirations and emotions. They are not random the colors, shades, hues, light, shadow and Diego Rivera, her lover placed in two-dimensional form. http://www.mariafernandalairet.com/esp/narrativas_globales.html
