Art!Vancouver 2017 by Jim Finlay

Once again Art!Vancouver Director Lisa Wolfin and her dedicated team have created a recipe for success with the realization of Western Canada’s most prestigious art fair. Take a great location, the Vancouver Convention Centre at the waterfront cruise ship terminal, add great timing, the busy cruise ship season, blend in many well-known local and international artists, garnish with corporate sponsorship which includes several important Canadian art publications, top with a full page colour catalogue and serve well organized. Eh voila, you have a cultural event worthy of comparison with other important art fairs around the world.

Art!Vancouver offers art aficionados, collectors and investors the occasion not only to satisfy their desire to enhance their aesthetic experience of their living and working spaces, with the purchase of high quality, original art but also the opportunity to invest in the art market. Yes, I said invest, to become a player, with other like-minded collectors whose reputations for getting in on the ground floor has made them art world wizards.

HOMAGE TO HAROLD KLUNDER. Jim Finlay

This unique fair facilitates the exhibition and sale of original art which will no doubt enrich the lives and investment accounts of their owners for many years to come. Where else can one browse, in a single location, the works of many talented and skilled artists working in different media and using stylistically diverse approaches to art making. This collective exhibition, with over 100 international and local artists participating allows for comparison shopping and encourages the development of a personal aesthetic, appreciative of a particular style or medium of art work, and yes, Art!Vancouver does value diversity of medium, subject matter and technique: the show is well represented by painters in oil and acrylic, photographers, sculptors and mixed media artists.

As a professional art appraiser, fine art wealth management consultant and artist I can tell you that yes you guessed it, over time original art increases in value. That being said why would you not want to enjoy the aesthetic experience of owning a piece you love, knowing that its monetary value is an increasingly meaningful compliment to your aesthetic experience?

HOMAGE TO GUY STANDING. Jim Finlay

And oh yes did I mention tax incentives for the purchase of Canadian art? Buying artwork, paintings, etchings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, etc. is considered as an amortization expense for corporations or individuals who operate a business. It qualifies as a tax deduction provided that certain criteria are met. The artwork must have been created by a Canadian artist and must be related to the business’s commercial activities, for example, it must be exhibited in a place of business where it will be seen by clients. Does my home based business office count?

The show takes place May 25th to the 28th 2017 at the Vancouver Convention Centre, for more information visit the website

MEET JOE BLACK. Acrylic on Canvas,150cm x 120cm Igor Prokop was born in Budapest in 1953. He graduated from the Teacher Training College in Eger as a teacher of Biology and drawing in 1978. Igor studied Biology at József Attila University and Arts between 1981 and 1983 in Szeged, then philosophy in 1984 in Budapest. He also studied film aesthetics in 1987 and between 1991 and 1993 he studied design at the University of Applied Arts.

“I want to preserve the past and to design the future. I want to protect the universal systems and I would like to protect the teachings of those that have thought me everything: The Organon by Aristoteles; Holbach, On the Road by Kerouac; Jack London, Arnold Gehlen, Stephen Hawking and several other teachers from art, music, history and even from the internet. They all became guides on my way.” – Igor Prokop.

Igor Prokop studied and worked in New York, Heidelberg, Auckland and several other places around the world. Everything is connected - nothing is meaningless. It does matter how you live, what you create, if you are going to have children, and what you are going to leave to them and their children as well. It does matter how much enlightenment you achieve! Every one of us has his own inner world made out of experience and personal learning within the system.

“Our world permits no further mistakes. United mankind can solve its problems. We must work together! This is my final goal, the inspiration for my pictures: To create tolerant, creative and cooperative systems that are heading toward a spiritual unity. Everyone must learn and teach at his realm, everyone must learn to work together with the power of art. For it is only possible to compare the power of art to that of nature herself” stated Igor Prokop. https://www.saatchiart.com/account/profile/98903

Stephanie Holznecht

LA VIDA LOCA. Acrylic, Tempera and Ceiling White on Canvas, 36" x 48"

Stephanie is originally from the Southeast coast of England, immigrating to the USA at the age of nineteen. She attended UW-Whitewater upon arrival, and obtained a BA in graphic design and fine art. She worked as a graphic designer and art director for many years. Although she originally used pen and ink in the style of realism, her current artistic style now centers on abstract art. A lot can be attributed to the workshops in abstract painting she has taken. These inspired her to let go of her minutely detailed realistic artwork and free herself up to feel art in a totally different manner. Her present styles include the use of heavy body acrylic on some canvases and fluid acrylic on others. She works on the two different styles simultaneously. This allows for some crossover between the two as they feed from the other, making for a very creative work atmosphere. Her acrylic work has grown ever stronger with each new

piece she paints. It has been a journey to reach the level of emotional binding she has attained. Each artwork holds a thought or emotion unique to her, as she manipulates the colors across the canvas. The titles of her paintings are born from gazing into a finished piece and pulling out the name from its core. Each title is unique to her. She wants the viewer to see this as only her perception. The observer should draw their own conclusions. She has exhibited at many venues throughout the USA and worldwide, including Dubai, New Delhi, Italy and London. She has also been honored with some prestigious awards worldwide including a bronze award at an exhibition in London, England and first place at an exhibition in Tuscany, Italy. Her art is in the permanent collections of corporate and private establishments worldwide. www.scholznecht.com

THE PROMISE, 2016. Oil on Canvas.

THE HATTER. 2012. Oil on Canvas.

Michelle Agin Michelle Agin’s work is rooted in the tradition of realism. A huge fan of the Masters; she prefers to work in oil. The absence of color makes her work unique while still capturing the moment through light and shadow. “If all I do is help to bring back the true ‘craft’ that is painting, I will have succeeded.” ‘The Promise’ 2016, Oil on canvas. This original painting is an allegory that represents human suffering and the light is spiritual and symbolic of God’s goodwill and the goodwill of men towards others. The three Monarch butterflies are symbolic of the Monarch School and three is representative of the Trinity. The Monarch School is a school for homeless children in San Diego. All proceeds from this artwork went to support the mission of the school. Inset: ‘The Hatter’ 2012, Oil on canvas. This original painting inspired by high fashion photography took 12 months to create; layer upon layer yet very minimal brush strokes are visible. She has been in several shows and received the Publisher’s Choice Award from Art and Beyond Magazine in 2013. MICHELLEAGINART.COM 10 • Art & Beyond • March/April 2017

Hui-ju Chen (Mickey) Hui-ju Chen (Mickey) graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Even though she has not been using art and design as her main profession, she has kept her passion of making art until today. Along with her teaching job at Shantou University, she always finds time to create various styles of work. It is interesting to see how her work has varied from photography to acrylic painting to mixed-media to collage. She hopes to keep being experimental because she believes that, in the art world, there are no real errors but different thoughts and processes with different outcomes. Without experimentation, she feels, art is not art. She gets inspiration from different aspects of life. She always hopes to learn and create different kinds of work by making use of her own different life experiences. It is normal to have lots of frustrations and doubts as one goes through the phases of creation. For Mickey, the biggest frustration has been the temptation and pressure to build and keep up one particular style in order to be a professional artist. Though it is true that a dedication to one style may enable one to come a little closer to perfection in that style, Mickey feels that art is about taking risks. If she is satisfied with one style, she believes that she loses a very important quality of art—the excitement of experiencing different things in the world. Therefore, she hopes to continue working in different ways and experimenting with different styles. Art making, for her, is not just a way to express herself but a way to define her existence. www.ratgoofy.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 11

WINTER LANDSCAPE 3. Mixed Media on Pape, 15" x 22"

Nira Chorev Painting for me is the process by which I seek Truth, and the constant challenge of finding and portraying the Truth - the Balance - in Nature. I was taught by both Israeli and American artists, each of whom inspired me and contributed to my artistic development, all of whom urged me to always seek and build my own language, my unique artistic signature. Be determined, they all said: 'seek your own path and a direction that fits your artistic needs; develop each concept in all directions; constantly strive to get better and be more daring because this is the only way you will find your individuality as an artist'. They were right. Eight years ago, in a moment of insight, I packed up and headed back to Boston. I signed up for courses and went back into the atmosphere of creating, one that was supportive and welcoming. It helped me to begin the new next phase of my journey in the art world, selfrealization- and that led me to the Mixed Media art I create, which is both unique and specific. My creation process begins with a photo I have taken. Moved by the artistic visions it inspires, I select the paper/s, soft pastels in different forms, threads, and other materials I want to include. This combination of materials coming together in one painting is my way to preserve Nature and give life - and permanence - to the memories I’m collecting. In finding and portraying the Truth - the Balance - in Nature, my goal is to create artwork that is balanced...that “plays the music”, and the music I hear from each painting is different from all the paintings that preceded it. In addition to the Mixed Media on my website, you will see Plein Air figurative abstract oil paintings. They are the cords that connect me to Nature and are the foundation and inspiration for my Mixed Media.

Janet O’Neal OWL WOMAN. Mixed Media.

As a 30 year veteran of the art scene, O’Neal’s work has received critical acclaim in festivals and exhibitions throughout the country. Prestigious art galleries and top publishing companies represent her artwork. Her works include paintings, mixed media assemblages, photography and sculpture; however she is most famous for her energetic abstract works and multimedia assemblages. Years of painting experience and experiments with texture and collage processes merged with the found objects and became a new exciting form of art that carried with it a new voice for the artist. The work moved from the abstract to this form of art that was more of a commentary on life itself and the spiritual side of it. Her current award winning mixed media figurative assemblages have evolved from her work with found objects. In the last several years her work has also included abstract with large multi- dimensional, vividly colored abstracts with deep texture and cast resin additions and encaustics. Some of the most current work revolves around photography, traditional digital photographs and mixed media works where photography is the dominant media. She has traveled to Israel, Jamaica and India the past several years photographing people and places for her new art. She has won 2nd place and two honorable mentions in the prestigious Georgia O’Keefe Museum’s International Photography Competition, First Place in the 2014 New Mexico Magazine’s Photography competition, 2nd place in The International WPGA Pollux Photography Awards and is a finalist in the Julia Margaret Cameron Photography Competition. Her work will be exhibited in the 3rd Annual Biennial of Photography in Spain 2014. www.janetoneal.com, www.janetonealphotography.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 17

Art & Beyond Interview with

Nicholas Teetelli by Justin Hoffman

HAVANA II. Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Paper 10" x 30”

CRUCERO. Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Paper 12" x 12”

Q. Being self-taught, what advice could you offer to others who aspire to become professional photographers?

A. Be true to yourself, trust your instincts, feel the moment, don’t be afraid to experiment - you may be surprised with your results. In the end, a photographer's work is an expression of their mind’s eye, so there is no right or wrong, just an interpretive expression that is liked or not liked by others. I also highly recommend taking specialized courses when possible. When I was an active Master Diver, I took an ten day course with Cathy Church to bolster and expand my skills in underwater photography. I also enjoy small group photographer trips, my last being to Cuba in March, 2016. These trips encourage casual discussion and collaboration, and in the process I always learn something new and make friends with people who share my passion.

Q. How did you decide to combine your photography with a clothing line? 18 • Art & Beyond • March/April 2017

As a fine-art photographer from New York City, Nicholas Teetelli has spent the past four decades honing his skills and winning awards both at home and abroad. He travels the world capturing what he sees and has a diverse portfolio including landscapes, architecture, portraits, flora and fauna, underwater, and street photography. His work will be featured at the New York ArtExpo this April, followed by a one month solo exhibition in September in Vienna, Austria.

VIDA COTIDIANA IV. Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Paper, 24" x18”

A. I was on the fence about the clothing line, and to a certain extent still am. The manufacturer contacted me and solicited me to consider putting some designs together, so I finally decided to give it a try. I thought it might be interesting, fun, and just something “different.” When I received the initial samples I was disappointed; I just did not like what the finished products looked like (then again I never like any of my photographs the first time I view them; it's part of my process I suppose). But when I showed them to friends they loved them, so I decided to move forward, and sent out quite a few over the holidays to clients and friends. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive! So, it would appear the clothing line will survive.

Q. Is there a specific location that has been your favorite to photograph? A. That’s a tough one. Now that my daughter is older, I have made it a point to do a fatherdaughter trip every year and we have visited many “bucket-list” destinations like Machu Picchu, Peru, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, The Grand Canyon, and this March we are heading to Iceland. However, being a product of the Cold War era, and never imagining I would ever have the opportunity to see it in my lifetime, I would have to say Cuba may be my favorite destination to photograph. In fact, I am giving serious thought to going back soon to continue my work there. It's an amazing experience and the people are wonderfully welcoming! www.teetelli.com • nicholas@teetelli.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 19

fine art GARRIGUE. Triptych. Acryl on Canvas, 80cm x 120cm

Gloria Colomb “Relindis” Gloria Colomb, also known as “Relindis”, her middle and artist name, started drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil. Throughout her career, she has had the opportunity to give in freely into her imagination as a graphic designer, interior designer, photographer, graphic illustrator, painter, manager, tourist guide writer, web designer and mother. She is very much inspired by the garrigue’s1 fauna and flora. From someone’s desire and with a few keywords, she is able to create painting tailored to the tastes of the requestor. Like a novelist, Relindis adds, replaces or removes elements from her canvas’ plot. She does not know the outcome in advance. Each feature calls for other traits, other touches and even more to give birth to these patchworks drawn from the observation of nature with a mixture of dreams and fantasy elements. The white canvas draws her like a child asking, "tell me a story". Then, spontaneously, the brushes start stroking the canvas and the colors start mixing gracefully as the work progresses towards its completion and the story takes shape. No templates. Drawings with pencils or acrylics on canvas - stories in black and white or in colors - vivid or faded according to the mood or the weather. The artist has created her own universe, maybe to escape a hostile world or to preserve her childlike soul! 1

ON THE CORNER OF SPIRITUALITY. Oil on Canvas, 80cm x 100cm

RG (René GEORGES) Relying on an artistic training as a sculptor/ceramist in London in the 80s, he developed his own style where he favours ovals, harmonious and rather feminine shapes. He spent 5 years in the South of France where he discovers the brightness. He travelled in over 30 countries in Europe, Africa, Arabia, Australia, USA, and Canada). Award Winner "Young Sculptor" Monumental Sculptures, Narbonne. Prize-winner «Mediterranean Colours " South of France. A nomadic artist and unclassifiable, RG is a person out of range. World traveller, lover of the essence of nature and everything that vibrates, he enters in a new spiritual dimension that matches in the age of Aquarius, freshly started in our time. It's in the silence that he accesses through his soul to the world of creators who experiment and discover the beauty, the wonderful. Flows out from there the free and creative energy filling his blank canvas - Inspired by I don’t know where from he always says. There is no pattern. There is what comes of itself. He then is amazed himself, full of gratitude and happiness. His friends like telling him. What you paint comes from other planets. To work in freedom and lightness, to listen to his inner being, what a happiness! It is pure adventure. Let the creative energy flow through your fingers slightly to the end of the brush belongs to the destiny of the genie.

IN MEMORIAM On January 24, 2017 the art community lost a wonderful human being, friend and artist, Anna Maria Giordano. Anna passed on after a very long and brave battle with Lymphoma. She was and still is a dear friend and member of Art & Beyond Publications and her artwork will continue to grace the pages of our Online Magazine. between space, light and image through the scrupulous examination of the ended work at the mirror, subject to the introspective "labor limae". Real root of rigor and memory, that, enhancing severity and discipline, even more vivifies the sight of the harmony of these works. Her works deliver the legacy of the past to the evocative power of the present.

Anna Maria Giordano

You can see in the varied artworks by Anna Maria Giordano the research into an ultimate end of painting: to transform every kind of experience, from the dream to the everyday life, from the microscope to the stars vision, from realism to abstraction, in a continual pursuit of quality and in the foundation of a new expressive language. Each work reveals an accomplished harmony, and one senses the preparatory part, such as the choice of the medium, on which she will impress pigments, sometimes very earthy, securing the light to be turned into life energy; or as a hardworking choice between dozens of drawings and/or anyway images, to retrace a spiritual path of classical architecture. The result is a pattern of the image with a central perspective into deep space projecting plans, through the firm path of diagonal lines, re-edited the “divina proportione” of the golden section of the Grand Masters. You understand a follow-up, marked through time, as a moment of pure reflection: a formal control of the balance 22 • Art & Beyond • March/April 2017

Intense brushstrokes, the result of chromatic passages thinning down, but equally sweet and tireless, they own the space: the incommensurable, between the real and the metaphysical, which the peaceful introspective proceeding by the artist gives to painting of timeless high poetic value, between evocative spirituality and thematic inspiration. Anna Giordano shows us the reality of the unreal: everything is illusion. Even life. On a sort of instinctive expressionism, supplemented by cubist and futurist depictions, Anna Giordano elaborates an image basic structure of high dynamism and immediate visual impact, deliberately without excessive erudite references. From it, the artist moves his tries in an abstract area, in the surrealist and dadaist field with certain unpredictable and playful combinations of shapes and heterogeneous materials. Altogether in her works one can recognize that substantial component of eclecticism that is the basis of the production of Anna Giordano images. A component that, paradoxically, we could consider as homogenizing all her activity. – Manlio Gaddi, September 2016. www.webalice.it/amagiord

THE OBSERVER. CollagenMalerei on Canvas, 40 cm x 40 cm. 2016

Barbaras BilderKunst Through the light to the matter

My journey of discovery in the artistic use of matter began with the delicate application of pastels. By way of large-scale shapes with bold colours in transparent gouache I came to use solidifying acrylic paint and then to my own CollagenMalerei. This is created layer by layer. Through constant reduction I get answers to my questions about essence and balance. International Artist and Award Winner Art & Beyond Magazine Award Front Cover Winter Print Edition 2016

MORNINGIRISSPLENDOR. Acrylic on Canvas, 6.64" x 10.287"

Darnéy Willis Darnéy is a painter of large scale contemporary canvases with bold invented color – lyrical, very expressive color passages of natural images viewed so close-up only part of the external contours of the particular images are seen. He doesn’t use the internal natural details normally seen with such a view. Currently he is images from the iris flower. These images are meant to be more than visual illusions, mimics of iris flowers – they are intended to be metaphors or doorways into visual, emotional, and sometimes even spiritual journeys – into flowerscapes of peace, order, beauty, and unity. They are metaphors of the human condition, of the magnificent yet fragile nature of our humanity and our constant dependence on our Creator for inspiration, protection, nurturing, and restoration. He realizes humans are capable of extremely ugly horrible cruel things also, which is worth addressing in paint as well. Presently his work is a joyful celebration of living, having purpose on this earth, bearing fruit and addressing issues that arise on the earth from mankind leaving an intimate relationship with our Creator and mismanaging our stewardship of the earth. The Kingdom of our Creator is described as right order (rightness), peace, and joy. When Darnéy paints, he seeks precarious or dynamic balance between order on the one hand and chaos on the other. He believes when this is achieved a visual peace is created which helps the viewer receive inner peace. In a world so full of inner and outer turmoil, this quality of life is very valuable. When obtained can result in great expression of joyful celebration.

"Artists explore and give the world a view of their personal heightened awareness. I visualize and think with keen beliefs and insights. Reflection of human and societal concerns which cross emotional boundaries — communicating that which is unspoken. My traditional art foundations of drawing, painting and printmaking, evolved into video, digital photography and experimental media. I use digital photography and imaging to envision the concepts originating from the creative pulse." - Nancy Bechtol

INTO THE WOODS I. Photography, 16" x 20"

Kathy Dee In my photos “Into the Woods”, I wanted to show a feeling of mystery and isolation. Walking in the winter snow can give us a feeling of being alone. The animals are in hibernation, the birds have left and all you have is yourself and the trees. There is no wind. It is quiet. You are left to ponder your own soul. The midst all around gives us a surreal effect as to what is reality? Is it what we see or is there something hidden beyond the fog? What is real? Do we have the courage to walk towards the distant midst or do we remain safe in the foreground? There are many questions we can ask ourselves in life. Sometimes we chose to explore life and we feel the confidence to seek out the unknown. Other times, we want to feel safe and avoid challenging ourself. Sometimes we regret those adventures and then other times we regret failing to take those steps. This time, what will you decide? www.KathyDeePhoto.com

beautiful art form of life drawing. Live models, many of whom are artists in their own right, bring their art of human motion into the process. It’s in capturing the flow of these beautiful human beings in drawings that the sculptures are born.

They are founded in the very basis of the ancient tradition of human anatomy. A study that dates back to the Greeks and beyond. The sculptures incorporate aspects of human motion that started with Kouros figures and developed during the renaissance. These modern versions of this ancient art form are further influenced by the works of the Italian Futurists, Umberto Boccioni, Balls and others. They take flight through the sheer force of human biomechanics and the internal energy that stones and human models bring to the process.

been regarded as the highest of models. Her work covers a wide range of Style, from Ethnic, Classic, to Over the Top and Everyday Chic. She refers to herself as displaying "ARTISTIC FREEDOM." Sandy loves to mix everything up. The old with the new, and the big with the small. Although quite versatile in her design she leans toward the large and Ethnic Style. Many of Her Designs are created as she sleeps. She considers them to be her most excellent art pieces. Gemstones and Artifacts used in her talented designs have been found in her many World Wide Travels. These and and so much more from the nations she has visited, are incorporated into the designs made by Sandy.
