POLYHYMNIA. Acrylic on Canvas, 48” x 48”. 2016

The presented collaboration of two pronounced artists, a legendary Sotirios Gardiakos [Garsot] and Helen Kagan [Helen Kagan Healing Arts] is much more than just two artists working together. They define their unique concept as © SYNERGISM, and they invent it as they go.

14 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2016

Their collaboration gives each artist’s individual gifts a new dimension, a new way to expand into something greater than just their own individual “selves”. The definition of Synergism – is that “the result of interaction of 2 [people, entities, agents] is GREATER than the sum of its parts”. Garsot and Kagan, create their unique Series by painting together,

TURBID PEOPLE. Oil, Mixed Media on Board, 60 cm x 60 cm

Gültekin Bilge Gültekin Bilge is a Turkish Cypriot Artist, born 1945. He received his MA in 1972, graduating from the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts. Bilge was shot in the right hand during the 1974 Cyprus War and was unable to paint for many years. The injury led to a dark period in his life, full of anger, pain, frustration, powerlessness, isolation and loss of identity. These emotions find full expression in his abstract artworks.

16 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2016

During recovery he worked as an art teacher whilst following developments in contemporary art. Gradually he recovered sufficient use of his right hand to develop a modern style of painting with international reach that is rooted in his Turkish tradition. He developed the Turkish Weave, Turkish Whirling and Dissolve techniques that have become his own language of expression.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE. Oil, Mixed Media on Carved Wood, 74 cm x 71 cm

Bilge’s art philosophy is centred on the concept of concealment. He uses colour to weave many hidden abstract portraits deep into the texture of his works to symbolise that many aspects of human relationships and human society are obscured. Since returning to painting full time in 2005 he has created an extensive portfolio. Bilge has lived and worked in the UK since 2011 and his work has been exhibited

internationally throughout Europe and in the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan. During this period he has also received many awards. His works are held in private collections in Turkey, Europe and Japan.

LOOKING AT VAN GOGH MY WAY ALBUM. On Rice Paper in a Folding Accordion Album, Done in traditional Chinese Styles with ink/watercolor, 30"W x 22"H

Debbi Chan Born and raised in the metropolis of Houston where the glare of sunlit skyscrapers the landscape I was most familiar with did not stop the smooth transition to a landscape of pines and snow in Idaho. What the surprise move did was open my creative mind and allow me to expand and my art to grow. I took up three new mediums and set my schedule to allow for art to be the focus of my time. The mediums were new but I managed to keep to the traditional Chinese style which I took up almost 15 years ago. Days for me are all about art . Making it keeps me busy and rarely does a day go by without it. If not painting I am gathering for it. Looking out my windows I see the vastness of nature about me and watch wildlife romping that I previously could only have seen in a zoo behind bars. My tight drawings loosened and the subjects I once was afraid of painting flow across the leaves of 70 ft. Continuous story

paintings in jumbo folding albums, my newest passion. They are being shown currently at Magnuson Gallery in Kendrick Idaho while awaiting a future home hopefully with WSU in their art museum. After completion I now publish each album as a wordless magazine and make them available to the public. And now the albums are coming to life in galleries you can carry in your pocket. The amazing 3-D app EXHIBBIT allows me to have entire albums on the wall. I have two shows open to the public now and a third will be open any day. You will most likely run into my blogs as well. Hopefully the albums will find their way to a permanent museum that appreciates story telling with art and without words. My time is still about making the art. If you don't make it you have nothing for others to see. http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/s/sosum

BLACK BUTTERFLIES. Acrylic on Canvas, 100 cm x 140 cm

Gabi Domenig is a through and through figurative Austrian artist. Since her early childhood she was attracted to the fine arts. She took classes in nude painting, color theory, drawing and composition. Especially charcoal, red chalk and pastels on paper and primed wood panels were the medium in the nineties. After her first show in 1999, when she presented 20 large pastel paintings to the public, she began to paint with acrylics on canvas. The strong and bright colors and the way of working with acrylics approached to her nature. She tries to capture moments and build up emotional tensions. She does not want to shock, stir up or provoke. The viewer of her images should be touched by a positive energy. For her art should be life-affirming and beautiful, touching and connecting. A language without words. She paints mostly with acrylic colors and concerns herself primarily with the representation of man and especially of women. Her characters send out varied emotions such as

pride, pain, love, sadness, loneliness, joy and longing. They are sensuous, strong, vulnerable, thoughtful, dreamy, seductive, promising and cautious. For the most part the figures are located in a particular environment cutout. The expression of the eyes should draw the viewer into its spell and animate him to enter in a deeper communication with the figures in the picture. Flowers, plants, animals, patterns and landscape sections are decorative parts, but are usually situated in the background. Because of her strong color palette she is assigned to the Neo-Expressionism. Participation in many international exhibitions in Austria, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, South America and USA. She got 6 Awards in the last 2 years. Single pieces of painted lampshades and T-Shirt you can also find on her web site: www.domenigartdesign.at

From a very young age, art has been a constant source of pleasure for her. From 1965-67, she studied at Philadelphia College of Art, intending to pursue a teaching career, but decided instead, to become a painter. Ellie soon expanded her horizons to include etching, and during the early 80’s, she worked as an assistant to an English graphic designer. During this time, she became proficient in various techniques including murals, trompe l’oeil, faux finishes, marbling, graining, stenciling, and sign painting. She also designed and executed large stained-glass panels for private homes and offices, restored church windows, and taught stained-glass classes. From 1987-1989, Ellie was an animator (hand drawn images not on computers) for many children’s educational programs, including “Sesame Street” and “321 Contact”. One of her favorite projects during this period was painting backgrounds and doing “ink and paint” for “The Ring of Truth”, a 6-part series on PBS. Christopher Reid is an internationally recognized artist that paints everything from portraits to landscapes to wildlife. Reid paints in pastel, acrylic, watercolor, and charcoal. His style has been described as “contemporary realism with an emphasis on color and depth.” “I am passionate about art, enjoy the act of creation, and hope to help people who view my artwork appreciate the beauty already around them. Too many people stumble through life without enjoying nature. Art is a form of communication and it is as important what you say as how you say it. I am an optimist at heart and I choose to use my art to talk about beauty.”

“Direct experience plays a major role in my work. Since nature provides the inspiration for art, I enjoy painting en plein air so that I can be out in nature and incorporate all the senses into my paintings and better communicate an experience of the place. When I paint from photographs, I am able to incorporate all the information I have observed from direct experience about color and light into my paintings. Even my portraits are informed by the thousands of life drawings I have done.” www.ReidsArt.com

VAMP. Acrilic on Canvas, 72 cm x 80 cm. 2015

Giordano goes beyond simple aesthetic representation, her artworks investigate new realities through a chromatic language, that underlines the unspoken values of the sign and a pictures dialectic full of poetical emotions".

Anna Maria Giordano A neapolitan, Anna moved to Gaeta twenty years ago. After leaving her previous job in 1999, she dedicated herself entirely to the figurative arts. She started with making and decorating ceramics (such as jugs, vases, plates, tiles....), and afterwards moved almost naturally to painting. Her first painting experiences were strictly figurative, and then, after gaining more skills, she moved gradually to the abstract paintings. She normally uses acrylic colours on canvas, wood or mason wood, but sometimes also mixed media (inclusion of paper, pumice or gauze integrated with the acrylic paint). "The artworks of the Artist Giordano distinguish themselves by the intimacy concealed behind the represented subjects. She has succeeded, through a careful and creative research, in creating a personal style and her own visual language, from which express the deeper emotions. So she shows us the complexity of the world and sentiments, originating compositions that have great communicative value. Anna 22 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2016

– Josè Van Roy Dalì, ("Artista nella Storia", 2015).

"The love of the surreal and the abstract invested the creativity of Anna Giordano that makes use of symbols generally accepted in order to make the viewer better discern the description of the pictorial contents. This goes also with vivid colours that emphasize masterfully the pictorial lines. The painter, master of sonic and colours, is supported by his talent, impetuous interpreter of his sensitive soul". – Sandro Serradifalco, ("Eccellenze”, 2015).

"A great skill in transfiguring the abstract, with very good versatility and astonishment aimed at the research of an emotive project. Anna Giordano creates her characterized and symbolic intuitive projections, by superimposing signs and symbols of rich material drawing up". – Jean Charles Spina, ("1st Grand Prix Côte d’Azur”, 2015). www.webalice.it/amagiord amagiord@alice.it

One of his latest projects, introduced in Germany in 2014, employs a personal process of painting review, supported by multimedia interactions that recall the obsessive presence of the informatics iconography. The main subjects staged are taken from the most famous video game player, some created through hybridization between characters of historical and virtual matrix, then placed in a totally alien context to the videogame narrative but easily attributable to our post-social habits. Its videoplayer in plexiglass, backlit by RGB led lamps, distort the balance of traditional painting, creating a transition space of the picture that underlines the precariousness and the illusions of the post-modern society. www.federicopisciotta.com • federico.pisciotta@gmail.com

BALLERINA – BLUE FLORAL. Acrylic on Canvas, 24" x 30"

Yorka Ralwins Yorka Ralwins (B. 1965, La Romana, Dominican Republic) began her painting life in 1999 when she opened a gift shop of hand-painted art in South Plainfield, New Jersey and set up her first studio next door where she taught painting to children, adults, and mentally challenged persons. Murals were her love during that period. She was also attracted by decorative and faux painting, which she incorporated into her business as a working painter. Exhibiting her personal artworks was never a consideration as she felt them too intimate to unveil to critics and the public. Moving to Florida changed that. South Florida awoke the artist with a purpose in her, and she was ready to step out of her cocoon. The figures, strokes, colors, and effects in her paintings are intended to strike an emotional involvement with the piece.

30 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2016

Yorka intends to arouse memories and feelings, perhaps spiritual, which compel you to pause and wonder what her story is about. She calls it figurative expressionist work which gives her the freedom to set up a contradiction in the viewer’s mind that asks them to reconcile a familiar image with the sometimes unreal surroundings she places it in. She emigrated from the east coast of Dominican Republic to the United States in 1974 where she lived a number of years in New York City before marrying and moving to nearby New Jersey. She has three charming children and a golden grandson and currently lives in Port Saint Lucie, FL. At the present she is an in-house artist at Studio 17 Highwaymen & Florida Art Gallery in Fort Pierce, FL. www.yorkaralwins.com

STEVEN LUSTIG Art - Breath - Movement This art is born out of a love of the human form and its natural motion. It is powerful, passionate, and embraces both human and natural forms. Steven was born and raised near the North Shore of Chicago where he began drawing at a age five. In high school he met a regionally known sculptor and began his fine arts education. During that time, Steven was given a copy of Gray’s Anatomy. He became fascinated by what he saw and immediately began to draw directly from the book, changing the course of his life and starting a lifelong study of the human form. Steven received an art scholarship to Bradley University. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with an emphasis on Biotechnical Illustration. While at the University of Illinois, Steven began to work for the Biomechanical Engineering department. His early work combining computers, art, and human motion became the genesis of Steven’s fine art, regardless of media. He would go on to draw, paint and sculpt thousands of interpretations of the human form in his own distinctive

style. In 1982 Steven moved to Southern California for the opportunity to work at an Olympic research center focused on Sports Medicine and Biomechical Engineering. Looking to the future, Steve quickly recognized the promise of what computer illustration could bring to traditional graphic design techniques. After seven years of working in corporate presentation graphics, Steven founded BioDesign Communications in 1989. BioDesign was a highly specialized computer graphics company supplying creative illustrations to the Life Science, Medical Device, and Healthcare industries. Steven has produced medical and life science images for companies around the world, and has illustrated four books, completed a series of life science illustrations for the Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Throughout this time Steven continued to draw and sculpt, dedicating his life to the arts. His fascination with drawing the human form continues to ignite his creative talent and provides him with an endless supply of material. Steven currently teaches a stone sculpting class at the Laguna College of Art & Design. In addition to working as an Illustrator and fine artist, Steven has been the Cultural Arts Chair for the CA PTA and a leading art advocate Statewide. For the past twelve years Steven has been a volunteer legislative advocate, recruiting and training parents, running legislative junkets to Sacramento and leading parents in the cause of public education. Steven is a volunteer art teacher at a local elementary school and has taught students art privately. Steven has studied Kenpo Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with his son and daughter and practices yoga. He lives in Huntington Beach with his wife and two children. www.stevenlustigfineart.com

Her current home, she and her husband had built for themselves, faces the water with the desert a short distance behind and as a backdrop a dramatic and rather large mountain range. With this view Sandy has taken the time to absorb the impact of this beauty and pieced together jewelry that exemplifies each geographical characteristic, blending them into original jewelry objects.

Her work covers a wide range of Style, from Ethnic, Classic, to Over the Top and Everyday Chic. She refers to herself as displaying "ARTISTIC FREEDOM." Sandy loves to mix everything up. The old with the new, and the big with the small. Although quite versatile in her design she leans toward the large and Ethnic Style. Many of Her Designs are created as she sleeps. She considers them to be her most excellent art pieces.

She is an Award Winning Artist. Sandy has placed in numerous Juried Art Shows throughout Arizona. Her romantic pieces of art continue to be showcased at David Rafaels in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Other distinguished pieces of jewelry designed completely from within her personal workshop are in the James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. Malouf on The Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is a self taught artist. Her jewelry displays both serene and harmonious qualities that have been regarded as the highest of models.

Gemstones and Artifacts used in her talented designs have been found in her many World Wide Travels. Art & Beyond Interview with

Gary Koenitzer by Justin Hoffman

From a very young age, Gary Koenitzer was intrigued with the art world. He was born into a family of artists and art collectors and therefore found the creative process to be a natural extension of his life. In his work he uses many unique mediums and has created his own individual styles. His work has been widely exhibited in locations such as New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Q. What is your process for creating a work? Is it always the same? A. I work with many different methods and mediums to create my work such as graphite, oil, ink, aluminum paint, chalk, acrylic, spray paint, digital, and lenticular art. With lenticular techniques, my method is to create layers the same way one would do for animation work, and this I do using a digital tablet. When creating work on canvas, as well as some digital work, I use a process I invented which I call “Linearmix.” This starts with free-flowing fragmented lines to shape content or a design. I do this intuitively, such as the way some are able to find the right keys on a keyboard without looking. I have created forty four symbol-like characters, that are meaningless, which I randomly use for shading or added interest. It gives my art a recognizable signature. There is often a strong sense of color added with a natural symmetry, and more recently elements are reduced into minimalistic vistas.

Q. How do you decide which medium(s) to use for any given piece? A. I don’t plan my art work; I imagine it, often more like a movie than 36 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2016

a still image. Every work I create evolves as I create it. I start only with the idea of the work first, and then decide if I am going with canvas, digital, or the illusion of motion (lenticular). As the work develops I then add as many or as few mediums needed to get the piece to have the depth of emotion I was intending. There is always a lot of experimentation. Different mediums have their own specific range of colors and textures which play a large role as well. Throughout the creation of a piece, I will think of the initial colors and textures that I imagined, but accept the work's evolution. My art comes to life during the process of creating it and not before.

Q. What do you envision a viewer experiences when they look at your work?

A. I imagine a type of curiosity and wonder which transcends routine with something inspiring. I offer an invented visual world one could pull themselves into for just a few moments, or perhaps something they’d want forever. Many of my creations are interpretations of infinity, engaging beauty or a suggested timelessness. I draw, paint,

digitize, and animate a close interdependence between the natural environment and the sentiment beings living in it.

Q. How have you developed your talent - through formal training or otherwise?

A. Because of my upbringing, being constantly around artists and art collectors, by the age of ten I thought I already had a profound exposure to what art actually was about for me. I wanted my art to originate in something more metaphysical which I would attempt to visually describe in the physical world. By the dawn of my teenage years every square inch of my available wall space was covered with my art. By the time I entered high school the concept that one could be taught how to create art literally did not make sense to me. I develop my own methods and style with lavish ongoing experimentation.

Q. How do you promote yourself? A. I started out as a street artist in Philadelphia which was a tremendous way to connect with collectors, gallery owners, and curators. Then I started searching the “Call for Artists” lists online and entered competitions. I use my own website, garykoenitzer.com and Instagram: @linearartmix. I am also on Twitter: @garykoenitzer. Upcoming Exhibits: May through November 2016: Philadelphia first Fridays at Second and Arch streets in Philadelphia. REBIRTH 18. iPhonography, 24" x 24"

Robin Apple Reminisce, Rebirth and the Horizon Line Last spring I made a solo road trip from California to Oregon and back, to retrace some steps of a journey that I first made two decades ago coinciding with the beginning of my professional career and the ending of requisite training experiences. The initial trip and my life at that stage 20 years ago, was all about broadening my horizons. On the second trip I was curious about what I would see and feel while looking back at the horizon from this vantage point. I created a series of images in a sepia-like color palette called “Reminisce” to reflect the gratitude, nostalgia and wonder that permeated the trip. As I completed this journey and began to look toward the next arc of my life, I became equally aware of the promise of

38 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2016

rebirth and the attendant feelings of enthusiasm and wonder about what might lie ahead. With those feelings in mind, I reprocessed some of the same images from the Reminisce series in a new palette of bright colors to reflect my current state of mind and called it “Rebirth”. From the series of 20 images, I selected 5 to submit to the Art and Beyond Online cover competition. I used my iPhone6s plus to capture and process images, choosing a few post-processing applications that allowed me to add layers to connote the complexities of life as one looks forward and back, through colors, textures, shading and lighting. www.robinapplepeopleshots.com

Arthur Jacob Jacob reveals the identity of the original image and then through digital manipulation, asks the observer to take a journey of discovery exploring shapes, colors and movement. Even when his work is easily recognizable, the predominate thread of color, movement and shape still exist. Using a mouse rather than a brush, Jacob hopes that his work results in a powerful medium of expression and communication. His extraordinary art has received accolades from the Medial Museum in London, England. He is also the recipient of two Awards of Excellence from Manhattan Arts International. Jacob has participated in numerous exhibitions including having a one-person exhibition at the Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica, CA. He has also been awarded

both front and back inside cover placement by Art & Beyond Publications. His many juried and group exhibitions include Best In Show at the Naples Art Association, Naples, Florida. In addition, Jacob’s creative versatility has propelled his art into many homes and other non-residential spaces. One of his works, Video Display, appeared on HGTV in a segment of Million Dollar Homes. aj@arthur-jacob.com www.arthur-jacob.com

BEHIND THE BLUE DOOR. Photography

Kathy Dee winner of Best in competition for Exhibition Without Walls Structure and Patterns contest You could say photography was always in my blood. My father, Vester Dick, was a master photography and owned his own studio in Santa Cruz, California. Although I had a camera and loved to shoot from an early age, I wanted to go my own way and became a writer, earning a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. But, in 2007, I had a trauma that affected the part of the brain used for words and writing. I had to quit my job

I loved the medium because I didn’t have to think in words. Unfortunately, my father had passed away years prior and wasn’t there when I needed a mentor. Although I learned a

Natalya B. Parris Digital photography is Natalya B. Parris's new passion that started in January 2016. She always liked photography and one of the reasons is that it documents the events and you could enjoy the results immediately. The immediate results of digital photography balance her love for art because it takes many months for Natalya to produce her signature Emotional Counterpoints in Paint – dots artworks that she paints with acrylic. Digital photography gives Natalya the opportunity to travel the unknown and express her favorite principle in art “What if..?” She experiments with colors, color-combinations and the wide verity of visual options that digital photography offers. It also gives her an opportunity to create a dream world with fantasies in vivid colors or to emphasize the focus and hidden message in the photograph. The approach she chooses depends on the photographs she took. Architectural photography links to her “first love” - civil engineering.

Natalya earned basic and advanced degrees in construction engineering from the Moscow State Construction University. Her nature photography starts with her garden that she calls her hobby and third child. It and a park across the street from her home give her endless opportunities to photograph and later “play with her photos” on the computer. The result is always surprising and if she is happy with it, she considers it a success; if not, a learning opportunity. Creating digital photography is always fun and she is planning to explore this new art form. You can see more of Natalya B. Parris's art on her Facebook page: Natalya B Parris

Somebody walked in, light a fire, snapped on the eyes of the lonely souls hiding in the loud daring crowd, secretly.

SMOKIE DOKIE. 1/500; f1.4; ISO 5000 06.02.2016 I’ve never understood the pull of the nightlife. I was always content to hang in my cave and enjoy the homelife. Every now and then I do wag my tail and purse the trail of the pack, Always lingering right at the back of the crowd. I follow their scent when they descend into the night, While they ascend the social status stairway. From my perch at the bar I watch the social sheep dancing to the beat of popularity: I saw the hunters through the flocks of feet trying to find themselves a piece of meat for an all night feast. Smokie dokie. I fall on my floor with a case of helicopter head as the room spins in circles and squares in front of my eyes. My lasting thoughts are of the day ahead; hanging dry and feeling as if I’d rather not waking up the next day at all. It's just another day in my nightlife. Smokie Dokie.

THE HOMELESS HOME. 1/50 sec; f1.4; ISO 800 25.02.2016

The mother’s face has shown all its devastations of what as consequences to be homeless yet living a home life The innocent souls is too young to comprehend what a home really means to be. A moment of pleasures has already taken away all the unnecessary sorrows and hardships which are saved for their doomed adulthood to bear such lumpy reality. A muddle age is with no cognitive processes commenced in any thoughts development for their small future. The reality will slay the youth and an elderhood. To be homeless is nothing different to be cursed to death. But remember, they can be saved by hearts, by warm hearts that would lit fire to life. It’s ironic to see homeless people live under overbridges, because we've failed to create a overbridge from our hearts to theirs. www.skyjactsoasis.com leondon@skyjactsoasis.com

Fu Wenjun Fu Wenjun, Chinese contemporary artist, was born in Chongqing (China) in 1955. He graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and currently works on conceptual photography, installation and oil painting. Now he lives and works at Chongqing, China. For love of oil painting, Fu Wenjun studied the oil painting at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. After graduation, he began to use camera as a tool for his artistic creation. Gradually, photography becomes one of his main artistic forms. Due to his professional training on oil painting, in his photographic works he pays special attention to the visual experience, like

perspective, form and color. He believes that it is unnecessary to distance painting and photography, the border of the disciplines is open to each other. Regarding the artistic creation thinking, he concerns most about the culture issues. He thinks the culture is directly related to the human beings and the times; no matter the classic culture or the present culture, only they relate us, they worth our profound study. He has also clearly realized that all history in the world developing to the present time is a global process lasting hundreds of years. In this process, the cultures are enormously influenced, because no one has

a stable formality, each one is under reconstruction by the interaction with the others. Since 2014, in the conceptual photography works he has been expressing in a more abstract way. Approaching from the perspective of the relations existing in a multi-image reconstruction and semiotics, with the use of the contradiction and the connection among various cultural nodes, he builds up his own cognitive fields on the culture and the history.

Besides, he also works on the installation art. Recently, at the 1st Asia Biennial and 5th Guangzhou Triennial, he presents the conceptual photography installation work Post – industrial Age, which reflects Asia’s unique civilization and industrialization process, and the temporal and spatial links between Asia and the starting point of Western industrial civilization. www.fuwenjun.com
