MANSS AVAL The artist and long-time fine art photographer works and resides in San Diego, California. As primary media he concentrates on photography, acrylic and oil on canvas, and mixed media techniques. Among his many other interests are sculptures, video and film. He has a broad background in media, communications and the natural sciences (including a PhD in science). Manss derives much of his inspiration from Nature’s patterns and textures. His works often transform inanimate objects into faces, designs and complete figures that present our environment in a different, more intimate perspective. Through a juxtaposition of images some of his work captivates movements in time and space, creating enchanted sceneries with animals at center stage. His Heron Dreams series orchestrates the grace, agility and elegance of these birds into evocative, dramatic, romantic, sometime surreal symphonies of pure natural beauty. His works levitate between fantasy and mysterious quantum space, leaving the viewer in meditative explorations of familiar memories, dreams and perhaps alien realities. In his recent Eden series, he presents seemingly futile avian attempts to evade environmental infernos of a disintegrating planet. The series Through the Looking Glass is an intriguing journey into a realm where imagination ostensibly morphs into reality. Whether it is a serene landscape or abstract painting, Manss consistently presents a bold, new view of our surroundings. As one art critic recently remarked, his ‘work is characterized by a sense of impromptu and instinctive freedom’. His fine art and photographic work has been exhibited at over 30 juried group and solo shows in San Diego, Pasadena, Florence, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Toronto and Merida. He is recipient of many national and international awards and his work has appeared in a number of publications.

Chinese Festival. Acrylic on Canvas, 24 X 36".

Maruka Carvajal I was born in Bolivia, and I am a naturalized Spaniard. I have lived in Brazil, Singapore, Colombia, and currently in Washington DC. I was educated to be an architect but my passion led me to dedicate myself to the visual arts instead. I enjoy painting so much! It is a chance to get involved with my thoughts, my memories and my feelings; it's my moment. When I start a painting I always choose colors first; without thinking maybe it's just intuitively or sometimes based on my mood. In my art I like to explore the abstract secrets of cities I have lived in, cities I have passed through, and cities I hope to visit. I bring out the similarities between cities around the world, capturing their true nature. Using different shapes, lines, and vibrant colors I interpret onto my canvas the emotions that cities awaken inside of me. I recall my experiences in different cities that have impacted me and I look into that past at the feelings that came over me in those moments. Some artists inspire me, especially Hans Hoffman because of his exuberant use of color, the relationship between them, and the spatial tension. I use different acrylics in different to express myself. My strokes reflect my visual language and respond to the impulse to fill the canvas. Using geometric shapes adds structural order to how freely I use colors. In addition, I like to use both paint

that is slightly watered down and pain that is thicker. To me this combination of shapes and my free use of colors along with varying viscosities of paint is the most appealing part of my creative process. The colorful nature of my painting makes them stand out and appear bright. Vibrant colors are very powerful tools and I am able to manage their effect on a composition. I am fascinated by cities because they are short-lived but form a long lasting memory. I think my paintings serve the purpose I intended and convey what I want them to. My goal is to make the viewer curious about the meaning behind my painting. I expect my work to represent the places that I have had the fortune to visit or have lived in and I hope it shares these places with the viewer inviting them to take an emotional journey where their spirit can drive free. www.marukacarvajal.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 9

Gabi Domenig was born in Austria. She is a through and through figurative artist. She tries to capture moments and build up emotional tensions. She does not want to shock, stir up or provoke. The viewer of her images should be touched by a positve energy. He should feel the music she has listened during her painting. He should feel something of her passion when she paints. There are so many negative messages every day which cause bad feelings. For her art should be life-affirming and beautiful, touching and connecting. A language without words. primarily with the representation of man and especially of women. Her characters send out varied emotions such as pride, pain, love, sadness, loneliness, joy and longing. They are sensuous, strong, vulnerable, thoughtful, dreamy, seductive, promising and cautious. For the most part the figures are located in a particular environment cutout. The expression of the eyes should draw the viewer into its spell and animate him to enter in a deeper communication with the figures in the picture. Fermin Fleites - Cuba As a visual artist, Fleites´s understanding of the complexities of human nature is essential in the symbolic representations that define man´s cultural history. His artwork transcends the physical structure of reality to document imaginary events, using different media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, and video. His frequent use of unusual materials such as gunpowder, soil, carmine and organic substances of different origins instill an ethnic uniqueness to his work. The leitmotif in his works is the exploration of the defining roles of cultural diversity and individualism that makes the human being. His travels and studies provided him with the opportunity to test his thesis about the social function of art in different

societies. This investigation focused on the resistance and cultural mechanisms that indigenous groups utilize in response to external incursions and influences. Antonio Guerrero is a contemporary Cuban American Artist. He was born in 1968 in Matanzas Cuba, under the Castro regime. Guerrero grew up in a household where artistic expression was appreciated and encouraged; although materials were not always available, his dreams and ideas were always abundant. Antonio Guerrero sees his art as a mouthpiece that inspires change. Influenced by the works of painters Matisse, Dalí and Chagall as well as authors Dostoyevsky, Kafka, Cortazar ,Borges, and Faulkner, his art presents a distinct visual language. Guerrero uses elements and influences as varied as ancient Egyptian art, imagery from the sumerian culture, tapestry from the middle Ages, avant-garde art, modern expressionism, as well as his own experiences to shape his unique personal voice. This voice has been the root for much philosophical musing on behalf of the artist, who continues to grapple with its existence and the dilemma surrounding the innate characteristics of a personal language. How personal can it be without being private and elusive to the public? And if it is public, how personal cant the language be? Guerrero ponders philosophical idea investigates topics like migration, courage, love, repression, pain, anxiety, and tragedy and uses his art as a vehicle to explore and understand humanity at large as well as him self- development, which, in his eyes,”represent the greatest human struggle”. 16 • Art & Beyond • November/December 2014

Twilight Visions with a Piano. Acrylic, 24" x 24".

Gayane Karapetyan (GAYA) Gaya (Gayane Karapetyan) is an independent contemporary artist. She is painting in acrylics with a focus on abstract artwork. Gaya’s paintings can be described as continuous abstract variations on the theme of the beauty of nature. They associatively correlate and thematically complement each other. From the pure abstraction perspective, she pursues to introduce colours as unconventional identifiers of the nature themes. The common theme of her creation infers the artist’s abstractive reflection on, and interpretation of, the natural world and phenomena. The intent is to show the captivating power of colour of the landscapes and seascapes, light refractions in the texture of flowers, mysterious fluctuations of water and deviational patterns of the moving natural forms.

The overarching cultural concerns and social message of Gaya’s work focus on demonstrating beauty and power of the nature as a cradle of humanity and intransigent essence of our lives. The nature is a value on its own which should be preserved and not compromised. Environmental context includes the harmony within the nature as well as in the human interaction with the nature. Music is that powerful source of inspiration which induces the emotional background to free the imagination and to reach the point of abstractive expression at which Gaya creates. http://gayaartstudio.com/

Art & Beyond Interview with

Patricio Moreno Toro by Justin Hoffman

Created in his studio in Concón, Chile, Patricio Moreno Toro’s latest work represents a temporary departure from painting on large-scale canvases. Produced on paper using oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink, dye and graphite, the series is entitled The Impermanence Of It All. Many of the paintings represent a statement about climate change and the impact on nature, man-made disasters, and cruelty to animals; a reflection on how we strive to balance technological progress with ecosustainability despite the impermanence of it all. Toro has traveled the world and on separate occasions has lived and created in several countries including Italy, Sweden, England, France, South Africa, Israel and the United States.

Q. Which art events have you participated in recently? A. Recently I have been involved with the We Are You Project, a traveling exhibit of prominent Latino artists living in the United States. There has been exhibitions including my work at Kenkeleba Gallery in New York City, Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland, California, Fountain Street Gallery in Framingham, Massachusetts, and the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. I have also had a couple solo exhibitions - one in San Francisco, Nayarit, Mexico and one to inaugurate the Vorres Gallery in San Francisco, California- and I was in a four person show at Galeria Ambos in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Q. Do you have any upcoming showcases? A. I am in the process of putting together a project at the Museum of Visual Arts in Chile and also working on a retrospective proposal for the Orebro Lans Museum in Sweden where I had a solo show in 1970. I am

Tengo Miedo Torero. Mixed media on paper, 43" x 30". 2014

also negotiating with a few galleries in Europe and Asia for shows in 2015. I am listed with several on-line galleries as well. And I intend to continue with the We Are You Project.

Q. Describe your artwork to someone who has never seen it.

A. I would describe my current work as neofuturistic, mathematically anarchic, always respecting the structure of numbers but never subordinating to the way of achieving results. My paintings are abstract, often monochromatic or with a very limited color palette. I challenge the structure, never the foundation. I started as a realistic painter. I became bored with the still life, the pears in a dish, the landscapes. Now I dish the spice. Q. What is your artistic goal? A. My goal is not for fame or fortune, although, honestly, both would be nice. At the tender age of almost 71 years, my goal is to surprise and reinvent myself time and again. The best teachers I ever had were my pets- dogs and cats. I learned from them economy, generosity, and evenness. These are the characteristics I try to bring to my work. Q. What is the story behind the first artwork you sold?

A. My first sale was at age 9. At the time, I was living with my mother in Cartagena, Chile. She had many friends who would visit our home. One in particular liked to watch me as I made small watercolors. I did not mind the audience. One day she asked me if I would sell her a painting. I thought she was joking but she was quite serious. I think she gave me a quarter. Over the next few years she bought many of my small paintings to use as postcards. By age 15, I was selling all the watercolors I could produce at the annual arts festival at Park Forestal in Santiago, Chile. Although I sold to many people, I had one important repeat customer- Salvador Allende- who eventually became the President of Chile.

Q. How would you describe your perfect situation for creating art? A. I have painted in makeshift studios in many places in the world- Spain, South Africa, Israel, Mexico- to name a few. My "perfect" situation for creating art is to have a large space to move around and into my work. If I have the space, I usually build a 12x30 foot platform on the floor to hold my canvases. My tools primarily are sponges, rags, and rollers so I need plenty of those. Natural light, fresh air, and the sound of ocean waves or classical music is essential... and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label helps. www.patriciomorenotoro.com

Gopaal Seyn is a renowned Indian born American contemporary artist who has exhibited his artwork in reputed galleries and produced illustrations for books & magazine covers. He has a fan following from all over the world. He believes his art is a poetry which he writes with his brush. There are artists who can leap over the culture currently in fashion and grow to gigantic proportions, moved by their memories and by a deep awareness of their historical inheritance. For these artists the act of breaking away occurs simultaneously and harmoniously – they are part of one same natural and mysterious process. Gopaal Seyn is one such artist. His paintings were recently published by the International Contemporary Artists Publication in Athens, Greece and has also been chosen to be published in the Hidden Treasures Art Journal of London in 2015.

– watercolors, oil paintings, pastels and sketches. He believes in happiness and evokes a feeling of love and tranquility in all his paintings. To him the world today is full of violence and aberrations so he reaches out to a higher intelligence to create his art. Those Who Affirm the Spontaneity of Every Event. Mixed Media, 84cm x 119cm.

Art & Beyond Interview with

Ryota Matsumoto by Justin Hoffman

Q. How would you describe your artwork to someone who has never seen it? A. My art works incorporate various aspects of architectural drawings and design including structural forms, figure-ground perception, materiality, and urban environment/infrastructure. The art works of contemporary artists and graphic designers who I admire also influence me.

Based in his studio in Tokyo, Ryota Matsumoto’s works have been featured in numerous Japanese and English publications including KALTBLUT Magazine, DéJonDé Magazine, the Draftery, For Example magazine, EDGEcondition, Creative Review, S//A, Artistaday, Infected By Art Magazine, Rhizom. com, Cultureinside, Light Space & Time and Dr. Koert van Mensvoort’s Next Nature Site. His current interest gravitates around the embodiment of cultural possibilities in architecture, art and urban topography.

meet the great theorists, writers, and designers of our generation at the Architectural Association and the experience gave me a broader perspective. This perspective is not confined within architecture but can be found in fine art as well. All of this education allowed me to receive a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007.

Q. How has your education influenced your art and your art career?

Q. Who or what is your greatest influence?

A. During my formative years of undergraduate study, I acquired basic

A. I always draw inspiration from broad sources – experimental music, literature, films, sculptures, the latest technology, etc. There are some fascinating visual images or lines from books that I hold as vague memories. And then all of a sudden, while I am working on my drawings, they flash in my mind and link together, subconsciously, in an unimaginable way. All of these sources of inspiration certainly have a crucial role in my art, both figuratively and in a surreal manner.

drawing skills and I also took courses on modern Art History. It was only much later, during my graduate studies, that I learned about the available digital techniques such as generative art and parametric design. In the 1990s I studied at the Architectural Association in London and the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art. I had the opportunity to

Waves and Particles. Mixed Media, 85cm x 59cm.

Q. Some call your work “digital art,” but you have called it “mixed media.” Why? A. It is primarily because I employ a hybrid technique of the analogue and the digital. Some works involve handmade work with collage, pen, and paint. They are digitally processed in final stage. So I always experiment with a variety of techniques. Q. So how would you describe your artistic goal? A. I’d like to produce art works that reflect my years of experience in the field of architecture. Moreover, I hope my broad range of interests in different disciplines will allow me to establish my own drawing technique and distinctive work.

Q. Do you enjoy collaborating with others, or would you prefer to work on your own?

A. It is easier for me to work alone as far as the current work are concerned, but I don’t rule out the possibility of collaboration – especially with people working in different fields. I like the idea of transcending cultural and stylistic boundaries. Q. Do you teach currently, or have you thought of teaching? What would be one important message you would pass on to your students? A. I don’t teach currently, but I am happy to teach at any art or architecture schools as a visiting critic or lecturer. What I could possibly pass on is that, as artists, we need to stay open-minded and free-spirited in order to stay creative. Ultimately, I would hope to pass on that we don’t have to be constrained by any particular trends or specific styles. "Think outside the box" sums up my message well. Q. How do you promote yourself? A. I mainly present my work through art and architectural Doubt Gives Birth to Ambiguous Inferences. Mixed Media, 67cm x 59cm. publications as well as social networks. The executive editor of Architectural Design Magazine and John Wiley & Sons, Ms. Helen Castle, discovered my work initially and A. This opened up the opportunity for me to present my work Switzerland and Biennale of Digital & Internet Art in Poland. I will also be in various publications and exhibitions internationally. Tim Tyler is a contemporary artist who works in a representational manner. Inspired by the Old Masters, Tyler’s skills and technical ability to achieve high levels of realism are impressive, yet it’s his visual wit, use of satire and clever method of social commentaries that he weaves into his compositions that elevate his works above practicing realist artists. A respected professional artist, Tyler has a distinctive career and received honorable recognition for his work from notable authorities and leaders in the arts such as the late Charles Banks Wilson." Aaron Jones, Interpretations Manager at Crystal Bridges Museum of Art Tyler’s early years were spent exclusively in the American West. Slowly his geographic experiences moved into the Eastern United States to Maine and as far south as Hilton Head. He has painted in Italy and the south of France 9 times. periodical advertisement, articles and the internet, have nearly freed him of gallery affiliation for the first time. Irreverent or comedic, increasingly edgy with underlying meanings, his production is dominated by figurative work. Scores of books and magazines include his creations. Tyler’s “The Deconstructionist” was the first painting by a living artist to break into top ten most popular paintings at Art Renewal Center. He was accepted to exhibit at American Artist Professional League - Salmagundi Club. In 2014, “Happy Homemaker” garnered six awards including; “Grand Prize Allied Artists of America, Special Exhibition” which included elected membership, “NOAPS Best of Show”, Oil Painters of America National Exhibition; “Most Original Award of Excellence” and “Viewer’s Choice” where it was purchased. www.TCTYLER.com

Sandy Den Hartog Sandy has had an interest in stones since childhood. Wherever she went, even as a young person, whether it was picnics, vacations, or field trips; she always made sure she had a cup along to collect rocks which were precious to her at the time. Once in high school she took numerous classes in gemology and geology. Then she graduated, got married, and had children. Rocks and gems had to be put on hold for a while. However, she was still able to attend gem shows and art shows when she had the opportunity. She was looking and learning and eventually was able to travel the globe and reignite her interest in gems and minerals. She was struck by how much stones, rocks, gems, and minerals change from country to 30 • Art & Beyond • November/December 2014

country. In bringing back Ethiopian Crosses from Africa, she made her daughters and granddaughters necklaces with the crosses. She was once again hooked with a creative passion for what she could now do with these artifacts. Sandy’s work has been exhibited at Palace Hotel in San Francisco and the James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. She has also been a part of several juried shows winning a first place medal in 2010 and 2012 with a Award of Merit in 2012. stitches1@suddenlink.net

Art & Beyond Interview with

Anabel Rub Peicher

by Justin Hoffman

Born and raised in Lima, Perú, Anabel Rub Peicher’s passion for art started at an early age while taking drawing lessons at The Academia Suarez Vertiz. Her artistic passion and creativity comes through designing interiors, furniture, logos and artwork, undertaking a diversity of media such as stone, ceramics, and metals

Q. Can you describe the circumstances under which you booked your first exhibit?

A. My husband was undergoing cancer treatments; my refuge was art. Art therapy was provided at NIH (the National Institute of Health) which helped transport my mind to a happy world of creativity and far away from the painful reality of the treatments my husband was undergoing. I came across Gallery 101 in Fort Lauderdale, which was located a few blocks from my home. I committed to a solo show, which opened the last week of February 2010. My husband previewed the show and the last communication I had with him was telling him that the gallery had record sales with my work. He gave me a thumbs-up and smiled. He passed away a few days later. Q. How would you describe your artwork to someone who has never seen it? A. My artwork is eclectic. I allude to organic shapes and use my imagination to create my own unique works. Ideally, my goal is to create large installations around the world with the help of local artisans and with the use of local materials. Q. What are your favorite mediums to work with, and why? A. Working in a variety of mediums allows me to explore different possibilities and formats. In ceramics I am constantly revisiting the circle – adding textures, exploring different glazing techniques, and presenting it in numerous formats such as wall hangings on metal bases, or self-standing on curvilinear metal bases. I create abstract shapes in Styrofoam, which I later transform through a mold into resin or bronze. In aluminum I create flowers in different shapes and sizes. To some I apply a blowtorch and the heat transforms the aluminum’s silver tone into golden and smoked shapes, which at times makes perforations adding to their uniqueness. Creating is what challenges and inspires me regardless of the materials; I might consider the aluminum more enticing to work with since I can accomplish the larger installations. Q. What do you envision that viewers of your art will think or feel? A. Different creations allude to different emotions. Often, the senses are aroused. In my “Optic” series, mystical interpretations of the human and spiritual worlds are revealed. In another ceramic, “Abstract,” a mother and child are revealed through the viewer’s interpretation. In my “Flowers of Passion,” the work transports the viewer to a nature wonderland. And in my fiber glass sculpture “Natura” viewers experience sensual innuendos. Arthur Jacob Recognition of my work has greatly expanded with participation in several solos and many juried and group exhibitions. Among them is my most recent solo exhibition at the Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica, California and hosted by Gallery ArtLA. I have also been the recipient of several awards and have been featured in or as part of several print media articles, among them Professional Artist and Art & Beyond Magazine, that are both national print and electronic magazines. I have also recently been juried in to the winning on-line gallery hosted by Manhattan Arts International, New York, New York. My work is a process of discovery, strongly influenced by a very strong visual sense of the world. My work offers an infinite variety of visual perceptions and interpretations for the viewer. The viewer is first told what the “real Life” image is in the title of the piece, but through abstraction and reconstruction of that image, they are then asked to undertake an adventure of discovery and challenged to explore the shapes, colors, movements and forms, which 34 • Art & Beyond • November/December 2014

the abstraction and reconstruction present. Colors and shapes become emotion, while form and movement become attitude. Even when a work is easily recognized there is still a predominate thread of color, movement, shape and form. My creative process is a thoughtful and purposeful digital manipulation. Using a mouse rather than a brush to achieve a powerful medium of expression and communication, creates this style of fine art. After leaving the work-a-day world, it was in Las Vegas that I began to discover my creative abilities and focus on the mediums of photography and digital art. In 2008 I decided to move to the Portland area where I presently reside, after a short stay in Coos Bay, Oregon. Believing that it is important to stay connected with one’s community, I have actively served on several community boards and committees, most recently, the Contemporary Arts Collective in Las Vegas and the Coos Bay Art Museum in Oregon. aj@arthur-jacob.com • www.arthur-jacob.com

Christophe Kiciak Christophe is a 36 years old self-taught hobbyist, living in France. He deeply enjoys creating unusual images, by combining his own photos into surreal, conceptual, or fantasy oriented pictures. The most important to him is to keep control over the whole creation process: he spends much time thinking about concepts, first translating them into rough sketches, then shooting all the various necessary photos, before achieving the composite itself. As a result, his images are always very personal, reflecting his very thoughts and point of views.

His wife Marianne is helping him, especially on the artistic side of the creations (sets construction, image composition, color choices, overall feeling). Since 2012, his work has been awarded several times in international contests. http://www.kiciak.fr

Dan McCormack studied Photography from 1962 1967 at the Institute of Design in Chicago and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1967 to 1970. I began photographing the nude with Wendy, my wife, while in graduate school. Then for over forty years I explored various techniques and processes while photographing the nude as a central theme. In 1976, I joined the Board of Directors of the Catskill Center for Photography and served as Vice President of the Board for ten years. One of my responsibilities was the installation of every show during those formative years. I have taught photography at Purdue University, Pratt Institute, SUNY New Paltz, Bard College, Ramapo College and Mercy College before I came to Marist College twenty years ago. I currently head the photography program at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 1998 I began to work with pinhole photography. I use an oatmeal box pinhole camera to make 8x10 inch B&W negatives. With its extreme wide angle and distortion, the camera gives

me results that are constantly a surprise. I develop the B&W negatives, scan them into Photoshop, and then colorize the image by pulling curves in each of the channels. I make an images rooted in 16th Century pinhole optics juxtaposed with 21st Century digital print manipulations. These newest photographs of mine are a hybrid of Photography and Digital Printmaking. From January to February 2010 I had a solo show at the Photography Center of the Capitol District in Troy, NY. I showed over fifty images from ten diverse series made from 1990 to 2010. And in May 2013 I have a solo show, “Nude at Home”, twenty-six images made from 2003 to 2012 at the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. http://ulsterartistsonline.org/user/130
