Art! Vancouver, Western Canada’s international art fair, invites both galleries and independent artists to exhibit their original works before a savvy and welcoming audience of curators, collectors, designers, gallerists, other artists and art lovers from all over the globe. Vancouver’s natural beauty, ease of living, cultural diversity and amenities make it ripe for an international art fair, says Lisa Wolfin, director, Art! Vancouver. “We want to put this city on the map as a must see art destination,” says Wolfin. “People are coming to this beautiful place in droves yet we had no art fair. After seeing what other cities have done and what we have to offer I knew it was time.” Wolfin’s background more than prepared her for the task. Having trained in Los Angeles and Paris as a fashion designer and built her own clothing label Wolfin took those skills and experience and shifted her focus to fine art. An accomplished artist in her own right with works in private collections around the world Wolfin ran and curated Hollyburn Country Club Gallery in West Vancouver for eight years before launching Art! Vancouver. “I meet artists, locally and internationally, who need a larger platform to connect with the greater community,” says Wolfin. “Art! Vancouver provides that. We provide a space and time for those attending our fair to connect and build relationships directly with the artists and for artists to connect with other artists and art professionals as well. As much as it is about promoting and sales it’s about building community with art at its core.”

“Art! Vancouver gave me the opportunity to meet my audience and see how they reacted to my work, which is invaluable for any artist,” says Kirsten Nash, award winning singer songwriter and fine artist. “Since my first exhibition with Art! Vancouver my paintings have been featured in several magazines, including Arabella, a Canadian art, architecture and design magazine, and will be featured on the inside front cover of this winter edition of Art and Beyond.” Nash’s paintings have also been featured in International Contemporary Artists, the 11th edition and in the latest edition of The Best Modern and Contemporary Artists.

“All this started with participating in Art! Vancouver, which I’m really looking forward to doing again 2017,” says Nash. Housed in Vancouver’s architecturally renowned waterfront convention center, the four day event held annually in late May and now in its third season, runs next in 2017 from May 25 – 28. Each of the past two years have seen over 120 Canadian and international artists exhibit work. The well advertised and promoted event has seen some 20,000 attendees. “Sales are solid for a young event,” says Wolfin. “We’re growing and artists are growing with us. In addition to direct sales a number of galleries have signed artists as well. We’re excited for them.” Art! Vancouver offers a diverse selection of fine art in various styles, mediums and subject - realistic to abstract, portraiture to landscape, in oil, acrylic, mixed media, photography and sculpture. The opening night gala features select artists strolling along a fashion inspired runway displaying a work of art. The crowds love it, says Wolfin. hen traveling we try to equip ourselves with a favorite guide or two in order to get the most out of our short or long journey we call a “holiday” or here in America “vacation”.
While travelling through Portugal late this summer my husband and I chose two major cities to visit, Porto and Lisbon. Our goal was to travel around and get the most out of every place by driving through each town, enjoying the wonderful cities, full of old traditions, beautifully preserved historical landmarks, architecture, castles and little old towns with cobblestone streets that for centuries have not changed a bit. A huge part of our travel involved experiencing a variety of authentic foods native to the country. In order to understand and fully submerge oneself in any one culture one must eat, and through eating, we are able to try different things that may be foreign and unfamiliar to us. This experience allows us the opportunity to understand and form a bond to the new lands we visit as we are able to travel back in time and even forward in time through the tastes, smells and sounds of food. After a few days of driving and a lot of walking around small towns and villages we decided to take a slow road and try to find something peaceful and enjoyable at least for a day. We took a drive through the most beautiful countryside of Douro Valley. It is an unforgettable experience to breath the air and see the beauty of that magnificent part of Portugal. This day we ended up at outstanding and extremely contemporary restaurant right on off the road by the Douro River, DOC, a place not to be missed if you are in the Douro Valley.
The tasting menu was fantastic!

S
- William Butler Yeats ubstitute "write" for "paint" and this quote could very well have come from the mouth of Luis Enrique Toledo del Rio.
The 26 year old Cuban artist creates lush alternate worlds, rife with symbolism, beauty, mystery and magic on canvas. Born on October 31st, (though completely unaware of the date's symbolic value outside of Cuba until recently), perhaps his affinity for the esoteric was a fait accompli, if you believe in such things. "My work." He smiles then continues earnestly. "I have always said, my work is a virtual door to another world. It is the inner world we do not know ourselves. A place of magic, surrealism, all encompassing situations of being, such as time travel, where wishes are made and come true... It is an exploration of my subconscious." Luis Enrique channels images of butterfiles in bottles, golden eggs in nests often sat atop his subject's heads, human marionettes on red strings, broken pocket watches frozen in time, and youth perpetually suspended between childhood and adulthood. Recurrently his paintings are set in the primordial woods at night. "...for the complexity of the branches, the way they wrap around each other. Their complications make me think of the subconscious mind, holding the ancient secrets of the collective unconscious since the beginning of time."
DESPUES DE EL OCASO. Luis Enrique Toledo del Rio 12 • Art & Beyond • November/December 2016
Luis Enrique begins a painting with the overall compositon, but as he begins to draw the work takes its own shape, "Many objects and characters are born from the constant conversation between the creator and the creation. The painting asks me for the baroque, and the archetypal elements. Sometimes I paint things and I don't even know why."
LA IRONIA DE UN IDILIO. Luis Enrique Toledo del Rio
While the subject of Toledo del Rios's paintings and the way he creates them may be at least a partially unconscious act, his technique is certainly the result of many hours of conscious training. The level of detail he acheives and academic skill with which the artist executes is stunning, merging classical and contemporary styles. At first the viewers eye is pulled in all directions. There is so much to see, to marvel at. Eventually one comes to a harmonious state with the art, still an active participant in the painting, exploring each stroke, one feels the emotion emanating from the work. "I have a great fear of empty spaces", he laughs, it's easy to see why. Each milimeter of canvas is bathed in layer upon layer of paint and glazes, part of a process he learned from his father, Enrique Toledo, a brilliant artist himself, whose work is in the permanent collection of the Vatican. Luis Enrique and I discussed influences on him and his work. His father is of course, of monumental importance. One can see the elder Toledo in Luis Enrique's technique, his use of color and in their mutual attraction to the Rennaisance. His mother, an actress in children's theatre, is referenced in the puppets and sets, and his grandmother, an award winning Cuban poet, is everywhere.
MISTRESS OF DESTINY. Luis Enrique Toledo del Rio
According to Toledo del Rio, "Poetry is present in everything. Poetry is words creating images, paintings are images creating poetry." "Everything I paint, the keys, the clocks, the wheels, the forests, the trees, mythic people, mystical characters, the moon, the oneiric, the magic is about the forest within and is coming from somewhere deep inside me. From a part of myself I don't know very well." Psychologist Carl Jung wrote about art which grew from the collective unconscious, “Whoever speaks in primordial images speaks with a thousand voices; he enthralls and overpowers, while at the same time he lifts the idea he is seeking to express out of the occasional and the transitory into the realm of the ever-enduring.”
Luis Enrique Toledo del Rio is represented exclusively by Conde Contemporary, located at 204 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables, FL 33134 and on the web at condecontemporary.com. Contact Stacy Conde 239.961.0452 or via email at stacy@condecontemporary.com for further information.

ON THE ALTAR OF FASHION. Digital Art 80cm x 70cm
I spent much of her childhood immersed in the vivid landscape of the Southern Australian countryside with its redorange hills and white limestone. It inspired my love of colour and interest in art. My journey as an artist began as both an editor and contributor to a number of community art projects. An avid reader of history and lover of science I love to create and respond to the affects time and place have had on us. My themes revolve around nature and music; both have transformative power over our body and psyche. In much of my artwork, I hope to evoke a sense of intimacy with the subject, a sense of ritual and ceremony I turned to mixed media while creating art for my fantasy novels. I love to explore myth and dreams and am heavily influenced by the Graphic Novels of Neil Gaiman and the various artists he collaborated with like David McKean. The narrative created between art and story is transformative and inspiring.

IMPRISONED. Mixed-Media, 50cm x 110cm
Hui-ju Chen (Mickey) Hui-ju Chen (Mickey) graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Even though she has not been using art and design as her main profession, she has kept her passion of making art until today. Along with her teaching job at Shantou University, she always finds time to create various styles of work. It is interesting to see her work varied from photography, acrylic painting, mixed-media to collage. She hopes to keep being experimental because she believes in trial and error except in the art world, there are no real errors but different thinking and doing with different outcomes. Without experimenting, art is not art. She gets inspiration from all sorts of things in life. She always hopes to learn and create more different kinds of work through her own different kinds of experiences in life. The real goal for art making for Mickey is the art making itself. 16 • Art & Beyond • November/December 2016
It is logical to have lots of frustration and doubts going through all the phases of creation; however, the most annoying one to Mickey has been about how she should build and keep up with one particular style in order to be a professional artist. It is true but somehow problematic to Mickey because she thinks that art is about taking chances and taking some risks. If she is satisfied with one style, she believes that she loses some very important quality of art, the excitement of experiencing different things in the world. Therefore, she hopes to throw away the practicality behind certain logic and continues working in different ways and styles. Art making to her is not just a way to express herself but a way to define her existence. www.ratgoofy.com
FLOWER MEADOW DREAMS. Acrylic on Canva.
Gabi Domenig is a through and through figurative Austrian artist. Since her early childhood she was attracted to the fine arts. She took classes in nude painting, color theory, drawing and composition. Especially charcoal, red chalk and pastels on paper and primed wood panels were the medium in the nineties. After her first show in 1999, when she presented 20 large pastel paintings to the public, she began to paint with acrylics on canvas. The strong and bright colors and the way of working with acrylics approached to her nature. She tries to capture moments and build up emotional tensions. She does not want to shock, stir up or provoke. The viewer of her images should be touched by a positive energy. For her art should be life-affirming and beautiful, touching and connecting. A language without words. She paints mostly with acrylic colors and concerns herself primarily with the representation of man and especially of women. Her characters send out varied emotions such as pride, pain, love, sadness, loneliness, joy and longing. They are
sensuous, strong, vulnerable, thoughtful, dreamy, seductive, promising and cautious. For the most part the figures are located in a particular environment cutout. The expression of the eyes should draw the viewer into its spell and animate him to enter in a deeper communication with the figures in the picture. Flowers, plants, animals, patterns and landscape sections are decorative parts, but are usually situated in the background. Because of her strong color palette she is assigned to the Neo-Expressionism. Participation in many international exhibitions in Austria, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, South America and USA. She got 6 Awards in the last 2 years. Anna Maria Giordano A neapolitan, Anna moved to Gaeta twenty years ago. After leaving her previous job in 1999, she dedicated herself entirely to the figurative arts. She started with making and decorating ceramics (such as jugs, vases, plates, tiles....), and afterwards moved almost naturally to painting. Her first painting experiences were strictly figurative, and then, after gaining more skills, she moved gradually to the abstract paintings. She normally uses acrylic colours on canvas, wood or mason wood, but sometimes also mixed media (inclusion of paper, pumice or gauze integrated with the acrylic paint). "The observer should not, and can not, ignore the executive path of this painter of remarkable talent. As the musical composer lives and express himself through the notes, so this virtuoso artist communicates through the colour and significant signs. From what we can see, its tendency is to proceed from the figurative to an informal post cubist with bright colours". – Paolo Levi ("Eccellenze”, 2015).
the artworks of Anna Maria Giordano carries the viewer into the world of emotional language. The artist communicates through her images on an emotional level and allows the viewer to feel the world of feelings. The proximity, security and protection feelings are an important issue in her work. Sometimes she used elements of Cubism with colour contrasts in her own style and comes with the viewer in a dialogue." – Heinz Playner (“About Art Magazine”, 2015).
"A great skill in transfiguring the abstract, with very good versatility and astonishment aimed at the research of an emotive project. Anna Giordano creates her characterized and symbolic intuitive projections, by superimposing signs and symbols of rich material drawing up". – Jean Charles Spina, ("1st Grand Prix Côte d’Azur”, 2015).

Natalya Parris Curiosity and exploration are entwine in the process of creating art for Natalya B. Parris. She does not limit her artistic imagination and inquisitiveness to merely one medium of art; she is constantly exploring painting on paper and canvas from oversize to miniature. She finds new surfaces to paint on from recycled materials, metals and wood. Ms. Parris is recognized for creating paintings in her unique artistic style - “Emotional Counterpoints in Paint – Dots.” She started painting in this style in watercolor, then moved to creating dots with acrylic on mixed media and paper. After that, she began to paint dots on canvas. She continued to develop this style; and in order to express powerful emotions, she piled the dots on one another. The dots, like music notes, interacted with the rhythm of the melody - creating emotional counterpoints in a three-dimensional painting. But that was not enough for Ms. Parris. Her dots are as limitless as her artistic vision – they now appear on tin and wood. Ms. Parris constantly challenges her ability in art by addressing new art forms or combining opposite form of art, like painting oversize art in miniature scale. She was very happy when her first “Emotional Counterpoints in Paint – Dots” style miniature painting "Portrait in Lace" was juried to the 81st Annual International Exhibition of Fine Art in Miniature, November 22, 2014 - January 4, 2015 at Strathmore Mansion in North Bethesda, 5301 Tuckerman Ln, Rockville, MD 20852.
Natalya created it in record short time to be able to submit the painting for jurying on time. She did not have time to take a professional photograph of it. The painting was sold at that exhibit. With her second 4"x4", acrylic on canvas miniature painting "Bouquet of Flowers" that was also created in her signature “Dots style” she did not want to take this risk. She obtained an image of it before she submitted the painting for jurying in professional category at Montgomery County Agricultural Fair 2016; August 12 - 20, Gaithersburg, MD. The painting won First Place at that exhibit.

Yorka Ralwins Yorka Ralwins (B. 1965, La Romana, Dominican Republic) began her painting life in 1999 when she opened a gift shop of hand-painted art in South Plainfield, New Jersey and set up her first studio next door where she taught painting to children, adults, and mentally challenged persons. Murals were her love during that period. She was also attracted by decorative and faux painting, which she incorporated into her business as a working painter. Exhibiting her personal artworks was never a consideration as she felt them too intimate to unveil to critics and the public. Moving to Florida changed that. South Florida awoke the artist with a purpose in her, and she was ready to step out of her cocoon. The figures, strokes, colors, and effects in her paintings are intended to strike an emotional involvement with the piece. Yorka intends to arouse memories and feelings, perhaps spiritual, which compel you to pause and wonder what her story is about. She calls it figurative expressionist work which gives her the freedom to set up a contradiction in the
viewer’s mind that asks them to reconcile a familiar image with the sometimes unreal surroundings she places it in. She emigrated from the east coast of Dominican Republic to the United States in 1974 where she lived a number of years in New York City before marrying and moving to nearby New Jersey. She has three charming children and a golden grandson and currently lives in Port Saint Lucie, FL. At the present she is an in-house artist at Studio 17 Highwaymen & Florida Art Gallery in Fort Pierce, FL. www.yorkaralwins.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 27

Art & Beyond Interview with Barbara Walder by Justin Hoffman
Living and painting in the Principality of Liechtenstein, Barbara Walder builds her pieces layer by layer, and through reduction discovers the answers to her questions about essence and balance. Recently, her work has been exhibited at Art Shopping au Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, and she is currently preparing to show in Switzerland and to have her first exhibitions in the United States. pieces of trash (rust, poster shreds, torn pieces of paper). The painting surface (cardboard, canvas, or paper), the shape, and the size of the resulting image are defined from the beginning of the experiment. My techniques allow me to choose in applying delicate pastels, fine glaze paint, and ink, as well as compacting colors and materials such as acrylic, marble dust, and pigments. Applied layer after layer, I define an interior and exterior space. Step by step, again and again, I add, create chaos on the painting, taking away material in the next step, giving rise to the empty - following the laws of painting which arise out of the need for imagery.

There is also the access to my inner child's game and the void that is created in the “now.” This is what I brought to my teachers, and I am deeply grateful for their passion for art. There I met the artistic expression of perfect purposelessness, the devotion, the serving principle to make oneself available, to create artworks for the world. Once or twice a year I visit courses with Alfred Darda at the Art Academy in Bad Reichenhall, Germany, and art tours in Europe and the Middle East let me delve into the history of art.

The momentum of this is the expression of a thought from my own inner world, being alienated through the steps and opening into an independent work, thus showing birth of an image. STEVEN LUSTIG Art - Breath - Movement This art is born out of a love of the human form and its natural motion. It is powerful, passionate, and embraces both human and natural forms. Steven was born and raised near the North Shore of Chicago where he began drawing at a age five. In high school he met a regionally known sculptor and began his fine arts education. During that time, Steven was given a copy of Gray’s Anatomy. He became fascinated by what he saw and immediately began to draw directly from the book, changing the course of his life and starting a lifelong study of the human form. Steven received an art scholarship to Bradley University. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with an emphasis on Biotechnical Illustration. While at the University of Illinois, Steven began to work for the Biomechanical Engineering department. His early work combining computers, art, and human motion

became the genesis of Steven’s fine art, regardless of media. He would go on to draw, paint and sculpt thousands of interpretations of the human form in his own distinctive style. In 1982 Steven moved to Southern California for the opportunity to work at an Olympic research center focused on Sports Medicine and Biomechical Engineering. Looking to the future, Steve quickly recognized the promise of what computer illustration could bring to traditional graphic design techniques. After seven years of working in corporate presentation graphics, Steven founded BioDesign Communications in 1989. BioDesign was a highly specialized computer graphics company supplying creative illustrations to the Life Science, Medical Device, and Healthcare industries. Steven has produced medical and life science images for companies around the world, and has illustrated four books, completed a series of life science illustrations for the Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Throughout this time Steven continued to draw and sculpt, dedicating his life to the arts. His fascination with drawing the human form continues to ignite his creative talent and provides him with an endless supply of material. Steven currently teaches a stone sculpting class at the Laguna College of Art & Design. In addition to working as an Illustrator and fine artist, Steven has been the Cultural Arts Chair for the CA PTA and a leading art advocate Statewide. For the past twelve years Steven has been a volunteer legislative advocate, recruiting and training parents, running legislative junkets to Sacramento and leading parents in the cause of public education. Kathy Dee You could say photography was always in my blood. My father, Vester Dick, was a master photography and owned his own studio in Santa Cruz, California. Although I had a camera and loved to shoot from an early age, I wanted to go my own way and became a writer, earning a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. But, in 2007, I had a trauma that affected the part of the brain used for words and writing. I had to quit my job and struggled to find a new path. I was at loose ends looking for a creative outlet. Then, after a trip to Costa Rica and some reflection, I realized the most fun I had was taking pictures. I loved the medium because I didn’t have to think in words. Unfortunately, my father had passed away years prior and wasn’t there when I needed a mentor. Although I learned a lot from him, watching and listening to him throughout the

years, I realized there was much I didn’t know. I began taking endless classes. I also studied award winning photographers. I analyzed my shots against theirs and learned what mistakes I was making and worked hard to becoming a better photographer. In the past years, I’ve had close to 1,000 photos accepted on stock websites. I love the challenge of doing stock photography where even ordinary objects can result in sales. I’ve won a couple of contests and had many honorable mentions. Photography is a never ending adventure and I’m excited to see where it brings me in the future. I currently reside in Eastern Washington with my boyfriend and a dog named Sela. www.KathyDeePhoto.com

Even when his work is easily recognizable, the predominate thread of color, movement and shape still exist. Using a mouse rather than a brush, Jacob hopes that his work results in a powerful medium of expression and communication.
