KIRSTEN NASH (KNASH) is an award winning Canadian musician, a touring and session multi-instrumentalist and singer, as well as composer/lyricist. She has had her poetry published in literary reviews, has written two rock operas that were staged in the United States and Canada and has recorded three albums of her own music. Throughout the span of her musical career, Kirsten has always created art, focusing her incredible energy in the past several years on painting. In 2017 Kirsten’s work was also exhibited at the DMF Gala at the Hotel Hermitage in Monaco, the Princess Grace Academy during the Monaco Grand Prix and an exhibition at the Gallerie Carre Dore in Monaco that featured two of her paintings, including “Drama Queen” in it’s window. A WOMAN FROM THE HIMBA TRIBE. The Himba are semi-nomadic people who live in one of the most extreme environments on earth, the deserts that border Namibia with Angola. As water is scarce they use a mixture of pastes on both their bodies and hair. These pastes blend the aromatic resin of the omazumba shrub with animal fat and ground red pigmented stone. This ‘otjize’ paste gives the women’s skin and hair a distinctive red glow which symbolizes both blood, the essence of life, and the earth’s rich red colour.
As one of New York City’s most sought after advertising and lifestyle photographers for decades, Nancy Ney has won multiple industry awards, including the Clio. Her artistic focus shifted in 2013, and having honed her craft to a fine art, began traveling the world photographing special situations and unique themes that interested her. Humanity portraits set in exotic geographical regions as well as natural landscapes that possess a singular sense of beauty have become her hallmark. India, Mexico, Ethiopia, Bhutan, Galapagos, Iceland,Costa Rica, Kenya and Nepal are just some of the countries where 12 • Art & Beyond • September/October 2019
she has “gotten the shot.” Her international images have won numerous awards, including First Prize at the ipa Family of Man 2016. DEAD TREES. NAMIBIA The dead trees were taken in Deadvle, a white clay pan located near Sossusvlie in Namibi. It is surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, the highest reaching 1000-1300 feet, which rest on a sandstone terrace. The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area. The trees died, as there no longer was enough water to survive. there are some species of plants surviving off the morning mist and very rare rainfall. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to have died 600–700 years ago (ca. 1340-1430), are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. Though not petrified, the wood does not decompose because it is so dry. www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 13

Made in China, polished in Singapore and currently living in US, Yingri Guan is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in San Francisco Bay Area. She is currently working as a designer at a tech start-up. When not designing, she brainstorms and makes art. She is also into traveling, reading, and cooking fusion dishes. Adventurous, curious and insightful by nature, Yingri Guan pays attention to global commonalities and differences between every existence. By analyzing and interpreting different patterns and forms, she creates physical visualizations through generative design and digital fabrication to promote understanding about deep and hidden connections. H. ALLEN BENOWITZ, a self-taught photographer from Brooklyn, NY has lived in Miami since the 1960s. “Attracted to photography as a child, I enjoyed taking candid shots of my friends at the children’s home where I was raised; I was provided use of a darkroom. As a former court reporter and videographer, the camera became a natural segue and my eye for detail moved from the courtroom to the world. The trademark of my work is depth and texture, drawing one’s eye into the picture, highlighting varying objects’ multifaceted shapes and shades of light, and bringing a still image to life,” the artist says. “Each captured image is motivated by passion behind the shutter.” Photo subjects include nature, wildlife, people, architecture, and adventure travel. Vast recognition for his work includes a Judges’ Award at the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum’s Beaux Arts Festival; honorable mention in the International Kodak Contest; award winner, B/W photography, One Ear Society; and winner, American Institute of Architects global competition. Benowitz was chosen as one of Art Business News’ Top Emerging Artists for 2014, and a year later his work was on display at the Louvre in Paris. LAELANIE LARACH was born in Honduras, a beautiful country in Central America with coasts on the Caribbean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.The country has three major and dramatic large regions. To the east are the tropical Caribbean lands with jungles, lagoons, mountains, sandy beaches and islands of the Mosquito Coast. Also in the center of the country is a large interior hill the Sierra Madre Mountains, crossed by a number of rivers, each with its own beauty and character. It was this beautiful combination of mountains, tropical forests, and sandy beaches that inspired at a young age to begin experimenting with her artistic expression. In her earliest work she used pastels, watercolors, and charcoal after winning some small art contests in school, she was inspired to expand her work into the medium of oil on canvas. This resulted in her amazing masterpiece in oil, the painting called, “Mysterious Forest.” Each one of her paintings is unique with a signature in her work of vibrant colors and concepts. Throughout her body of work one can see themes drawn from her early experiences in Honduras, including aspects of her inner thoughts and emotions. She has said that she feels truly alive and in harmony

PAUL SCOTT MALONE’s artwork has appeared several times in Art & Beyond, as well as other publications. He is a visual and literary artist whose career now spans three decades. IGOR PROKOP was born in Budapest in 1953. He graduated from the Teacher Training College in Eger as a teacher of Biology and drawing in 1978. Igor studied Biology at József Attila University and Arts between 1981 and 1983 in Szeged, then philosophy in 1984 in Budapest. He also studied film aesthetics in 1987 and between 1991 and 1993 he studied design at the University of Applied Arts.

NATALYA B. PARRIS is a well-known artist and art instructor who has been teaching children and adults for over 11 years at the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg; BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown; and Sunrise at Montgomery Village, MD. She is a strong believer in contributing to the community by promoting art awareness and education. Therefore, she likes to display her artworks at the agricultural fairs, community centers, and public libraries. By visiting those places, children from a very young age have an opportunity to see diverse art media and learn that the world is very colorful with many unique ways to express yourself such as writing books or creating an artwork. Ms. Parris hopes her artworks encourage each adult to look at the world around them as they did when they were children; to be very open-minded and curious about new things.
Curiosity and exploration are entwined in the process of creating art for Natalya B. Parris. She does not limit her artistic imagination and inquisitiveness to one kind of art; she is constantly exploring painting on paper and canvas from oversize to miniature. She finds new surfaces to paint on from recycling materials, metals and wood. Ms. Parris is recognized for creating paintings in her unique artistic style - “Emotional Counterpoints in Paint – Dots.” She started painting in this style in watercolor, then moved to creating dots with acrylic on mixed media and paper. After that, she began to paint dots on canvas. She continued to develop this style; and in order to express powerful emotions, she piled the dots on one another. The dots, like music notes, interacted with the rhythm of the melody - creating emotional counterpoints in a three-dimensional painting.
