from the publisher What is Art? Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. It is a form of communication based on a range of emotions that can be expressed using brush strokes, color, various techniques, different medium and materials. The viewer is able to experience the visual impulse that creates a fountain of feelings.

I have always been fascinated by people’s imagination, their ability to express feelings, vision and philosophy by using simple tools to produce amazing works of art that unveil a whole new world. Art & Beyond Magazine is proud to present this special issue that will be presented at the Spectrum Miami Art Show 2015. Featured in this issue are incredible artists from different countries and from all walks of life, each possessing their own style, unique ideas and vision of the world around us. Art & Beyond will be at Booth #315 with the Contemporary Art Projects USA as our official Media Partner. This year Contemporary Art Projects USA brings with it a wide arrange of artists. Exhibitions not to be missed are the Special Solo Show Project by Ricardo Cardenas; Post Contemporary Art Initiative Solo Show with multiple artists; a Collective Artsy Project presented by multiple of artists and there will also be a number of different Solo Shows in the Contemporary Art Projects USA Booth #315. PIG PEOPLE AND PARTY. ALBUM. From a 70’ continuous story painting in a folding album, ink/watercolor on rice paper, 22”h x 30”w

Debbi Chan born in Houston Texas in 1951 where I spent my first 50 years. I became part of the Houston art scene in my younger years. It wasn’t until moving to wilds of Idaho that I devoted myself to art entirely. This wild country tends me and allows 10-15 hours of painting daily. Having studied traditional Chinese painting with a Master artist for almost 15 years I continue to paint in this method but over the years I have developed a style recognizably my own yet keeping to the traditional styles. The last two years have seen my art focus on very lengthy (over 70’) continuous story paintings in folding albums. Some are historical in nature such as “Logging in Pacific NW or East to West” which tells, using fine art, the story of Chinese immigrants trials, tribulations, and triumphs in helping to build the Pacific NW. Some of the albums are lighthearted and others very controversial. Of course, landscapes are still my favorite, the last year has seen a couple of new projects. I show in three virtual galleries with exhibbit. com and the paintings look beautiful on the gallery walls. I also decided to publish, as magazines or books, the finished albums so that they would be more accessible to everyone. I have grown passionate about these wordless books. Look for me online, I try to be around as much as I can between paintings.

Ann Dunbar, born in Hampshire, England knew at a very early age that she wanted to become an artist and she was encouraged by both parents and teachers. She spent six years studying, firstly to obtain a teachers certificate with honours and secondly a for bachelors of Arts degree in textiles and fashion. She taught in schools and colleges for sixteen years, before she became an artist in her own right, fulltime, with a launch of her first solo exhibition in 1990. Ann relocation to France in 1996, and made the most of her surroundings and spent time to find her own style and expression and to establish herself in the French art scene. Ann’s work is a figurative and romantic style whereby she embellishes her painting with embroidery. Thousands of silk threads superimposed create exciting effects. Ann has a long list of awards and medals; most recently she was given the Rubens Medal of high recognition from Italia in arte, the Art Critics Award and Rome Imperial Award (Salvatore Russo) from Italy and a finalist in the “Healing of art competition”, with Manhattan Arts International. Ann exhibits have travelled the globe, in Europe and abroad such as Japan, China, Cambodia, Australia and USA. She is represented by galleries and curators in Italy, Australia and France.

Olivia Alexander, born in London in 1961, moved to Australia with her parents as a child and soon discovered her talent for drawing. It was after she married and brought up her four children, that she pursued her art career following art classes and finally opened up her studio in Shellharbour, south of Sydney in 2007, where she works fulltime now. Her work is described as abstract expressionist, where she does not paint realism but rather the expression of the emotive factors she experiences. Her speciality is the layering of diverse mixed mediums which create a richness of luscious colours and profound range of texture. She was awarded the Silver Medal from the French International Academy of Merit and most recently the Art Critics award, the Rome Imperial International Award in Italy and a finalist in the international Brisbane art prize. She is represented by galleries and curators from Italy, Singapore, Australia and France.

Both Olivia Alexander and Ann Dunbar, who are passionate about nature, wish to raise awareness of the fragility, beauty and natural spirit of our marine world, through their own personal expression. Countries spend millions exploring space but very little beneath our seas and this exhibition stresses on its magnificence and the urgency to take action now.

HEAVEN TO TOUCH. Oil on Canvas, 1260mm x 1570mm

TEMPEST. Oil on Canvas, 650mm x 650mm

MICHELLE PURVES My love and intimacy with nature all started when my parents moved to a remote village on the border of a game park in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) when I was nine years of age.

Each flower is unique and a flower represents a person, travelling through this vast world with hopes and dreams, reaching for the sky, whilst not forgetting the beauty of their surroundings.

The fiery sun and flaming red skies, contrasted to romantic soft pink skies bedding themselves on the horizon. The scorched earth begging for rain and the chameleon clinging with hope to a vivid green tree in the middle of a drought. The midnight blue sky, alive with flickering stars and fireflies dancing to the beat, of an opera of cicadas.

My paintings are in traditional oils and my technique is non conformist. I commenced painting in 1997.

Nowadays, clouds to me represent the interconnectedness of nature. The beginning of life. The colours of the sky resemble the moods of people and their colourful characteristics, whether it be romantic, imaginary, or dramatic overtones.

Since 2002, I have had numerous successful exhibitions in Australia. In 2015 I exhibited at ART MONACO, Salon d’Art Contemporain par excellence, Cote d’Azur and was awarded the “Prix d’Excellence Artiste Emergent”. www.michellepurves.com

INTO THE WOODS. Liquid Acrylic on Canvas, 20” x 30”. 2015

“The course of the world is the course of our lives and the course of our existence in endless transition…and so my artwork follows this pattern as it emerges and broadens.” -Ellie

Ellie Manso Kane Born in Havana, Cuba – residing in the United States since 1962. Ellie’s art conveys her inner journey through life – from her island roots where vibrancy, movement and intensity played a major role, to a sense of inquisition and discovery along her artistic path. Exploring unique and contemporary techniques, she has recently found a very distinct creative expression in her latest abstract themes. Using an ancient Japanese concept as her starting point, Ellie focuses on the acceptance of the transient and fleeting, or as depicted in her paintings, crispness and elusiveness. Her quest is to find beauty in imperfection and, at its most basic, in all things primitive and simple - impermanent and incomplete. She works on canvas, panel, copper or wood and uses mixed media and collage in order to create texture and unforeseen forms. She states that the way her life took form after leaving her country taught her that things may not always shape up as they are planned. As she searched, she found meaning in this approach of interpreting her insight and presence. In this manner

she voices her sentiments through art - always keeping in mind that strength can be found even in what is most seemingly frail. Ellie has studied under Watercolorist David Maddern; Chilean Artist Jaime Ferrer; Author/Artist, Laura Cerwinske; Yugoslavian Portrait Artist Silvius Krecu; Portrait Artist Diana Neville; and Cuban Artists Baruj Salinas and Yovani Bauta. IRRATIONAL THOUGHTS. Acrylic on Canvas, 24” x 36”

Stephanie Holznecht Stephanie was born in England, arriving in the USA at the age of nineteen, where she now resides. Upon arrival she attended university, receiving a BA degree in graphic design and fine art. She went on to work in the design industry as a graphic designer and art director. After ten years she left her position as art director to raise a family, and begin to pursue a career in professional art. Stephanie invests in the creation of a piece of art to convey what she has inside: her thinking, emotions, her life, her essence and her soul. It’s also a way to reach her own desires and crucial demands out of life. When she creates a new piece of art, what she feels smoothly becomes real. At first she hesitates, knowing she can afford only a few false moves, but once her creativity is ready, her vision becomes clear and flows out onto the canvas. For Stephanie it is important to create what she feels. Her abstract art is an extension of herself. Full of passion and emotion, all playing a part in her creative process. The inspiration that she takes from experiencing life creates a feeling that continues to inspire her. She feels, as an artist, that is something she could never lose. Stephanie has won a number of awards, most notably a bronze award from an exhibition in London, England. She has exhibited worldwide; including Italy, England, India, Nepal, and all over the USA. www.scholznecht.com • sholznecht@gmail.com

WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY. CollagenMalerei© Mixed Media on Canvas, 65 cm x 45 cm. 2015

BARBARA WALDER Through the light to the matter - My journey of discovery in the artistic use of matter began with the delicate application of pastels. By way of large-scale shapes with bold colours in transparent gouache I came to use solidifying acrylic paint and then to my own CollagenMalerei©. This is created layer by layer. Through constant reduction I get answers to my questions about essence and balance. In the opinion of Mona Youssef, curator, jurist and gallery owner: “BARBARA WALDER is fascinated by nature since childhood which clearly reflected in painting striving to find answers about light and colors in nature and their relationship to man. Working with chalk and gouache, she adds special emphasis on naturalness, authenticity and originality which is important part of her existence. The brief moment of ``now-ness``, the transition from night to day, day to night fascinates her with its peculiar color, a moment of indecision in which its perfect beauty unfolds.” I am living and painting in the Principality of Liechtenstein

He received Master of Architecture from University of Pennsylvania in 2007 after studying at Architectural Association in London and Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art in early 90’s. The artworks of Ryota Matsumoto develop and demonstrate the spatio-temporal conditions of our everevolving urban and ecological environments. They are created to act as the catalyst for defining speculative changes in notions of cities, socities and cultures. Essentially, the work facilitates a reciprocal dialogue among those multifaceted realms in the morphological nature of constantly shifting topography and geology. The drawings explore the hybrid drawing techniques combining both architectural and visual art languages. TIME TO TANGO. Oil on Canvas, 100 cm x 120 cm

André Schoots How do we handle the changes in life? The oil paintings of André Schoots are narrative. In a fresh, colorful palette he combines a realistic metaphoric language with geometrical patterns. Central theme in his work is the development of the human condition. Individuals, society and nature change. Seasons, day and night follow patterns. Living creatures develop. People’s life changes constantly. All that is necessary to enjoy this bike is the will to exercise and to delight in the outdoors. If you accept the challenge, hop on a bike, take it for a ride in the park, around your neighborhood, to work or around the world. You can bike by yourself, revel in the company of a friend, or relish the camaraderie of riding in a pack. You can add accessories to it and transport pets, or people on it. At night with lights and reflectors you can take pleasure in riding in the moonlight under the stars. If you have a competitive spirit you may participate in a race; if philanthropic you might ride to raise awareness and funds for a noble cause. This installation of white flowers rising from the ground to the heavens intends to motivate people to get on their bikes and ride. It also renders homage to those souls who have lost their lives while on their bikes, due to unfortunate accidents, releasing their free spirits to eternity. STEVEN LUSTIG Art - Breath - Movement

This art is born out of a love of the human form and its natural motion. It is powerful, passionate, and embraces both human and natural forms. Steven was born and raised near the North Shore of Chicago where he began drawing at a age five. In high school he met a regionally known sculptor and began his fine arts education. During that time, Steven was given a copy of Gray’s Anatomy. He became fascinated by what he saw and immediately began to draw directly from the book, changing the course of his life and starting a lifelong study of the human form. Steven received an art scholarship to Bradley University. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, with an emphasis on Bio-technical Illustration. While at the University of Illinois, Steven began to work for the Biomechanical Engineering department. His early work combining computers, art, and human motion became the genesis of Steven’s fine art, regardless of media. He would go on to draw, paint and sculpt thousands of interpretations of the human form in his own distinctive style. After seven years of working in corporate presentation graphics, Steven founded BioDesign Communications in 1989. BioDesign was a highly specialized computer graphics company supplying creative illustrations to the Life Science, Medical Device, and Healthcare industries. Steven has produced medical and life science images for companies around the world, and has illustrated four books, completed a series of life science illustrations for the Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. www.stevenlustigfineart.com

Darnéy Willis I paint large scale canvases with bold invented lyrical and very expressive color passages of natural images viewed so only part of the external contours of the images are seen but without the internal natural details normally seen with such a view. I paint images from the iris flower meant to be more than visual illusions or mimics of iris flowers - to be doorways into visual, emotional, spiritual journeys - into flowerscapes of peace, order, beauty, and unity. They are metaphors of the human condition, the magnificent yet fragile nature of our humanity and our constant dependence on our Creator. www.wellspring-contemporary-art.com www.artistsinfo.co.uk • www.bgallery.co.uk
