CONTENTS from the publisher

I have always been fascinated by people’s imagination, their ability to express feelings, vision and philosophy by using simple tools to produce amazing works of art that unveil a whole new world. The magic we call ART is a universal language where one can experience its power by sight alone. It is a form of communication based on a range of emotions one can express using brush strokes, color, various techniques, different medium and materials. The viewer is able to experience the visual impulse that creates a fountain of feelings. Art & Beyond Magazine is proud to present the Winter Print Edition at Spectrum/Red Dot International Art Fairs during the Art Basel Week Miami 2016. Featured in this issue are the incredibly talented artists. They come from different countries and from all walks of life, each possessing their own style, unique ideas, philosophical approach and vision of the world around us. Traditionally, the Art & Beyond Cover Competition is held for every issue where four artists are given the opportunity to be featured on four covers of the magazine.

Art & Beyond Interview with Barbara Walder by Justin Hoffman

Living and painting in the Principality of Liechtenstein, Barbara Walder builds her pieces layer by layer, and through reduction discovers the answers to her questions about essence and balance. Recently, her work has been exhibited at Art Shopping au Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, and she is currently preparing to show in Switzerland and to have her first exhibitions in the United States.

Q. Where do you find your inspiration? A. My inspiration arises from observations of light, shadow, and rhythmic movement in nature: reflections of sunlight, intensity of wind movements on water surfaces, shadowing caused by clouds, in the flora, and reflections on buildings. The associated changes in color trigger an explorable fascination. These are the observations that I bring to my work.

Q. How would you describe your creative process? A. My creative process is equal to a child who wants to experience

TORRO. CollagenMalerei on Canvas, 40cm x 40cm. 2013

new things. This childlike spontaneity finds its space in a first movement on the painting surface. The momentum of this is the expression of a thought from my own inner world, being alienated through the steps and opening into an independent work, thus showing birth of an image. In the process I draw all of my intuition that guides me and creates the work as opposite. During this process parts fit together, combining fragments that I have taken out of context like collages, rubbings, or pieces of trash (rust, poster shreds, torn pieces of paper). The painting surface (cardboard, canvas, or paper), the shape, and the size of the resulting image are defined from the beginning of the experiment. My techniques allow me to choose in applying delicate pastels, fine glaze paint, and ink, as well as compacting colors and materials such as acrylic, marble dust, and pigments. Applied layer after layer, I define an interior and exterior space. Step by step, again and again, I add, create chaos on the painting, taking away material in the next step, giving rise to the empty - following the laws of painting which arise out of the need for imagery.

Q. Have you had any formal training? A. Life is my greatest master. The findings in spiritual science and the knowledge of my journey are my bases; my connectivity to the Original Christianity the foundation. There is also the access to my inner child's game and the void that is created in the “now.” This is what I brought to my teachers, and I am deeply grateful for their passion for art. There I met the artistic expression of perfect purposelessness, the devotion, the serving principle to make oneself available, to create artworks for the world. Once or twice a year I visit courses with Alfred Darda at the Art Academy in Bad Reichenhall, Germany, and art tours in Europe and the Middle East let me delve into the history of art.

Q. Who or what is your greatest influence? A. My greatest influence is my inner knowledge which draws out of the past. Observing the interpretation of techniques and the laws in the painting I have been impressed by the work of Otto Greis, the Painter of Light, the co-founder of Art informel, as well as by Antoni Tàpies, Gabriele Münter and Alfred Darda with his concrete painting. There is much beauty to behold in this world, moments that the eye captures, the wonders it sees... moments that should be committed to perpetual memory, but sadly only to become fragments of a faded recollection, or more often, simply forgotten. I draw inspiration to record these timeless and special moments, to capture them in my mind’s eye, and through my lens, transforming each image so that I can share them with others in hope they too may see what I see and find equal enjoyment. - Nicholas H. Series “Splash” Most of my work is organized around sentiments that I am feeling at the time the work is created. As a clinical psychologist by training, awareness of emotion is everpresent for me; it is informed by but ultimately takes precedence over content, location and situation. I visited the Brooklyn, New York area for a week, coinciding with Memorial Day 2016 in the United States- a holiday established to honor those who lost their lives in service to the country. I was struck by a sense of apprehension and pessimism during this trip, given the state of crisis that exists as the year- marked also by terrorist acts and unexpected political changes and exits- lurches forward to the uncertainty of the U.S. presidential election this fall. As I ventured into various establishments and neighborhoods, it was with a mix of dark humor, disgust, dread, embarrassment, foreboding and other feelings. As an attempt to understand and express myself in relation to the issues above, I created a series called “Splash” that blends self-portraits against the backdrop of Brooklyn during this particular week. I used my iPhone6s-plus for capture and post-processing and later set “Splash” to audio of a hovering Huey helicopter.

Robin Apple Ms. Robin Apple is an iPhone photographer who lives and works in Palo Alto, CA. She fell in love with photography as an important creative outlet and vehicle for self-expression. She typically favors highly colored images that incorporate angles, blends, blur, and motion in unique ways. Her images borrow from elements of abstract, impressionist, and pop art and convey her view that people and experiences are mostly contradictory, multidimensional and nuanced, more than they are straightforward. She comes to photography from a background in clinical psychology and appreciates the salience of emotion in her work. These days she’s using her iPhone6s plus and finds it freeing; not only is it accessible, inconspicuous, lightweight, and small but it also makes for an easily-rechargeable, fun, responsive and quiet travel companion. She hopes that her images stimulate curiosity and wonder. www.robinapplepeopleshots.com

REGAL BEGINNINGS. Acrylic on Canvas, 40” x 30”

Stephanie Holznecht Stephanie is originally from England, immigrating to the USA at age 19. Upon arrival she attended university and obtained a BA degree in graphic design and fine art from UW-Whitewater. She worked for many years as a graphic designer and art director. It was about 1997 that she began to make abstract art her full time obsession. Her current artistic style has changed dramatically from earlier years, moving from realism to abstract, promoted by taking a number of workshops on abstract art that peeked her attention. With abstract art Stephanie is inspired to let go of her minutely detailed realistic artwork and free herself up to feel art in a totally different manner. Her present styles include the use of heavy body acrylic and fluid acrylic paint. She works on the two different styles simultaneously. This allows for some crossover between the two, making a sense of harmony for her. She feels invigorated as she works, each style feeding from the other, establishing a very creative work atmosphere. She has exhibited all over the world and extensively in the USA. Abroad most notably winning first place in a wine bottle label competition at an Italian exhibition, and a bronze award at an exhibition in London, England. Stephanie invests in the creation of a piece of art to convey what she has inside: her thinking, her emotions, her life, her essence and her soul. She says, “It’s also a way to reach my own desires and essential demands out of life.” For Stephanie it is important to create what she feels. Her abstract art is an extension of herself: full of passion and emotions, all playing a part in her creative process. The inspiration that Stephanie takes from experiencing life creates a feeling that continues to inspire her. She says, “I don’t think, as an artist, that is something I could ever lose.” www.scholznecht.com

MAINE MARCHES. Oil on Cancas 24” x 48”

Jennifer Laughlin I am an artist whose work is inspired by my love of beauty and nature. I draw my inspiration from the sublime of nature informed specially by my experiences during my trips to Africa, Venezuela and Maine. The ethereal, light, shadows, shapes, colors and the moods that nature can invoque, have always inspired me and moved me to create or to try to replicate on canvas with oil paint and acrylic. My paintings also reflect my concern about our planet’s global warming. They represent the duality into which we co-exist: the beautiful and the threatening, all into one and the same formation. My experiences and personal observations of the world and nature are influenced by having being born in Venezuela, being educated in Switzerland, lived in London, Paris, Miami, New York and now Maine. My paintings are a cry for help for the changes in climate that require attention in our the world www.JLaughlinArtcom.Gallery

THE WAIT. Acrylic on Canvas, 36”x 48”. 2016

Yorka Ralwins “The Wait” (Fastidious) or an intimate truth of Yorka Ralwins, an amazing fast growing eclectic artist from Dominican Republic. In Yorka Ralwins, strokes and vivid colors place her in expressions of figures. The shape, so to speak, looks for order while concurrently discarding all approximation - an approach yielding a singular reality. This exchange of images, at times fixed and at other times moving, is the definition of a style that underlines every work. An image is part of a reality that conforms to a set defined by a ratio of ideas as vital as slices of life itself. (Take for instance) simple colors: together and apart, defined by marked contrast. If seen at a distance, they might be perceived as a pathetic reflection of reality. The colors and shapes of Yorka’s work are defined in images that (permit) the viewer to see themselves reflected in a spectrum of light and shadow; something like a game of proportions and disproportions that inflect what is vital in life. As if they (Yorka’s work is seen) were adverse pieces of the Goya’s Caprichos, clad in fuzziness and shadows leaping like flashes of that deformity that is life itself. Any deformity is an expression of colors that are committed to be felt through a play of chromatic lining (that) dramatizes the reality that the artist combines in time, space and color. This is where Yorka Ralwins inserts a world that is being created by particles shedding light and shadow. Her stage is the art of painting through a profound worldview that acts as a stage to time; above all, her strokes, so full of light, are as defiant as horizons of lines barely perceptible by the human eye. Yorka is a painter of elements separated by their own reality. All the while united by games, at times mystical and as unreal as a butterfly on ice; or a pin crossing a tinsel of leaves that both conform to an abstract world. It is as such. Yorka plays with defiant anger against the abstract and the real.

THE SILLY WAIT. Acrylic on Canvas, 36”x 48”. 2016

In Waiting (Fastidious), perhaps there is no such hope. Nor the haste of time condemning a space proportionally handled by the blue backgrounds of nostalgia. The whitish colors look like fray basting through the intimate world Yorka exhibits, with a style that contains its own color, like one of many whims or Caprichos that Goya contradicted the world with; rather, she inserts in the consciousness of man a deformity maximized by restraint. Yorka inserts colors, shapes and time that exhibit a space explored by a unique style that inaugurates, at first appearance, intimate truth. by R. A. Ramírez-Báez www.yorkaralwins.com

EGRET. Inverted Digital Photography

LONE PINE. Inverted Digital Photography

PETRIFIED WOOD. Inverted Digital Photography

JD Dennison JD began photographing at night for a desire to capture something from the dark quiet world we so rarely dip into. His revolutionary technique involves a powerful flash to illuminate a scene, and a computer to invert the images so the dark turns to light and light to dark. This causes the pure black “unknown” to glow, and isolates the complexity of an ecosystem into one form, and to find in that form, all the complexity of the whole. To find the miraculous in the common is the ultimate goal of his work. jddennison.com
