ORGANIC RESONANCE. Mixed Media, Rice Paper and Acrylic Paint, 30” x 24”

KASIA SZCZESNIEWSKI was born in Legnica, Poland, then she moved with her parents to Wroclaw – a beautiful, over a thousand-year-old, European city, which was her hometown for 20 years. During her youth, Kasia had the opportunity to see many beautiful examples of European architecture, sculptures and paintings, which strongly influenced her way of looking at art. Studied Architecture at Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland. This equipped her with strong drawing and designing skills. In 1987 she obtained a teaching degree from the College of Legnica, specializing in Art Education. After immigrating to USA, she continued her artistic training at the Harper Community College, Palatine, IL, attended many workshops, and spent years on self-educating, and refining her skills. Kasia is an active member of the Chicago art community, showing and selling her works, doing commissions, and organizing art events.

WILD COUNTRY. Acrylic, Fluid Acrylic, Tempera and Latex Paint on Canvas, 40” x 30”

Stephanie is originally from the Southeast coast of England, immigrating to the USA with her family at the age of nineteen. She attended UW-Whitewater upon arrival, and obtained a BA in graphic design and fine art. She worked as a graphic designer and art director for many years. Although she originally worked in realism, her current artistic style now centers on abstract art. A lot can be attributed to the many workshops in abstract painting she has taken over the years. These have inspired her to let go of her minutely detailed realistic artwork and free herself up to feel art in a more emotionally charged manner. Her present style incorporates a number of different paints into each painting. These mixed media works have inspired her to seek 6 • Art & Beyond • Winter Edition 2018

new avenues of inspiration, delving deeper into her emotional center to create more expressive paintings. These paintings have grown ever stronger with each new piece she paints. It has been a journey to reach the level of emotional binding she has attained. Each artwork holds a thought or emotion unique to her, as she manipulates the colors across the canvas. Her artwork can have many or few elements within it. It depends on how she feels that day. She moves the paint around the canvas in a strong decisive manner, knowing her emotions are guiding her. A few moves of her utensils create a window into her soul; open and free from outside influences, yet her emotions have their roots there. The finished piece is a complex creation of mixed emotions, coming together to form a cohesive piece of art.

JULIENNE JOHNSON

TOUCHED #12. DETAIL. Acrylic, Plaster, Hand Mixed Mediums, Surgeons Gloves, Collage on Canvas over Birch Panel Box.

JULIENNE JOHNSON is striving in this series to capture the whitewashed addiction and seductive entrapment of computer technology. Formally she’s after a trinity of depth, texture, and meaning — and the gloves provide all three at the same time. In the broadest sense, this is an explorative abstract created between the parameters of a sculpture and a painting. Combined with acrylic, ink, plaster, and computer parts, this unconventional grounding for her painted surface speaks to shifting ideas about connection and communication, intimacy, healing, danger, and distance. Shana Nyes Dambrot, Art Critic, Huffington Post, 09/18/2017 Johnson is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice includes, drawing, painting, sculpture, video and installation. Despite her success in a variety of other creative disciplines, Johnson’s most profound connection is with the visual arts – her strongest, most direct form of communication. Since 2010 she has exhibited extensively across the USA and has had 22 international exhibits, including: Japan, China, Italy, Qatar, Thailand and Armenia. Currently, her work can be found in 10 museum permanent collections with 5 on permanent exhibition to the public. Presented by LarkGallery larkgallery.com

SANTORINI II. Digital Prints on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Paper, 17” x 24”

NICHOLAS TEETELLI is both a published and international awardwinning fine art photographer. He was born in New York City and grew up in lower Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. During the late 1960s, and into the 1970s, the Village was a hotbed of culture and the arts. During this period, Teetelli was introduced to art and photography, developing an interest in what would become his lifelong passion. While he took some photography courses in college, Nicholas Teetelli is primarily self-taught. Spanning the last four decades, he has learned, developed, and honed his skills independently, becoming an avid and serious amateur photographer who has recently turned professional. Although he lived and grew up in New York City, he has spent many summers in the Greek islands and has traveled to many other places in the world. He continues to travel extensively in pursuit of the perfect photographic image. During each journey, with camera in hand, he records much of

I NEED MY WINGS. Acrylic on Canvas, 30cm x 30cm

Hui-ju Chen (Mickey) HUI-JU CHEN (MICKEY) graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Even though she has not been using art and design as her main profession, she has kept her passion of making art until today. Along with her teaching job at Shantou University, she always finds time to create various styles of work. It is interesting to see how her work has varied from photography to acrylic painting to mixed-media to collage. She hopes to keep being experimental because she believes that, in the art world, there are no real errors but different thoughts and processes with different outcomes. Without experimentation, she feels, art is not art. She gets inspiration from different aspects of life. She always hopes to learn and create different kinds of work by making use of her own different life experiences. It is normal to have lots of frustrations and doubts as one goes through the phases of creation. For Mickey, the biggest frustration has been the temptation and pressure to build and keep up one particular style in order to be a professional artist. Though it is true that a dedication to one style may enable one to come a little closer to perfection in that style, Mickey feels that art is about taking risks. If she is satisfied with one style, she believes that she loses a very important quality of art--the excitement of experiencing different things in the world. Therefore, she hopes to continue working in different ways and experimenting with different styles. Art making, for her, is not just a way to express herself but a way to define her existence. www.ratgoofy.com 12 • Art & Beyond • Winter Edition 2018

MEMORIES. Watercolor on Paper, 16” x 20” SUGGESTION OF A METAMORPHOSIS. Mixed Media on Canvas, 24” x 24”

Simone Buck Born 1971 in Germany, Simone holds a MFA in Graphic. For quite some years now she lives semi-isolated in the stillness of the Canadian Wilderness, surrounded only by nature and animals spirits and living self-sustainably off the land. Even though her art draws on shapes, colors and other elements of the natural world, it is an examination of the human spirit, the interconnectedness

of all things and her paintings often represent an expression of the soul. She frequently travels into other realms through shamanic journeying and retrieves some of the imagery used in her art from there. Simone Buck, McLeese Lake, BC www.coldsnap-studio.ca

Nira Chorev Born 1952 in Boston MA, raised and educated in United States and Israel, received Diploma and 5 year postgraduate degrees from School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA. Today Chorev works in mixed media and fine art, based in Brookline, MA. She uses photos “to capture moments as memories”, which trigger the landscapes she creates continue the connections between the artist and nature, and “remind us how things were before man changed nature.” Her artwork has been exhibited around the world and in privet collections in Israel, Europe and the U.S, her artwork is at the Center for Israeli Art at the Museum of Art, Jerusalem, Israel.

NIGHTMARE: NARCISSISTIC CANNIBAL. ODE TO CHAGALL. Oil, 48” x 60”

This body of work is my diary showing my journey as I am preoccupied with matters of human relationships as they are paramount to me. I deal with emotions such as love and interpret them artistically. I express these themes involving human relationships by unifying them through intense color and surreal, mysterious, symbolic subject matter. I focus on things organic and mysteriously instinctual.

DREAM COME TRUE: ODE TO LUDINGTON BEACH, DANIEL, AND DALI. Oil, 16” x 20”

My work has often involved themes that I have found inspiration in dealing with human emotions like pain from unfaithfulness, bipolar meltdowns, grief after suicide, anxiety within autism, and true love. One of my earliest influences was Edvard Munch as well as Frida Kahlo because of their similar luck in love, paintings about their turbulent relationships, and their display of emotion on canvas .

human psychology and its interpretation of it through surreal symbols. The last shows a peaceful happier set of paintings that show a normalcy due to the lack of mental illness. The figures are relaxed and pleasant due to the trust, comfort, and love within the relationship. One appears “on fire”, as it symbolically should when one is in love.

LUISE GANDON LUISE GANDON is an Austrian-French painter born in Vienna where she also lives and works. In 2011 she began to study art at the Kunstakademie Reichenhall in Germany and the Kunstfabrik in Vienna. The only thing she never changes is the use of acrylic colours, her prefered material. She is fascinated by the expression and features of a face. The recipient should reveal the feelings and situation of the portraited person by the expression of the eyes. Since 2014 Luise Gandon has exhibited her pictures in Austria, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, France, Spain, The Netherlands and in the USA.

KERSTIN KAGER KERSTIN KAGER was born in Graz in Austria in 1966. After her studies of French and German she became a language teacher. Since her childhood Kerstin has been fascinated by colours and artwork. She has always been impressed with colours, shapes and shadows. In her artistic work she uses expressive colours in her paintings on the one hand, on the other hand she draws powerful lines in black and white. Motives of landscapes and water as well as men and animals are typical for the Austrian artist. So, she has her sketchbook always ready to catch remarkable moments of everyday life. Spontaneously she sketches scenes on the road when travelling around the world. https://www.facebook.com/seilarte

AUTUMN GLOW. Giclee Print.

GUNILLA KLEMENDZ Born in Sweden. Seminars in drawing, nude painting, sculpturering and glazing. First exhibition in 2010. Some individual exhibitions, numerous participations in projects, national and international group exhibitions in galleries, and art fairs in Sweden, Denmark, Italy, France, Austria and Germany. I find inspiration by studying people in different situations, not least during long walks by the Baltic Sea. A key element in many of my pieces are leaves of some kind, and I like to imagine things that might be hidden underneath a fallen leaf. I just let the feelings and colors come out in the creative moment. It is like a meditative state of mind. https://www.facebook.com/seilarte

MARIANNE CHARLOTTE MYLONAS-SVIKOVSKY I have settled in Geneva after wandering around and living in several places and capting atmospheres and lights, sceneries and impressions, unknowingly memorizing them until, one day, they want to spurt out. World events that mark me also interest me to paint as well as emotions and feelings or then poetic images since I’m also a poet. I studied art at Los Angeles UCLA and have been painting since I was 12 years old on and off but passionately since 2000. “I always aim at the essence of what surges from my innerself, rendering the emotions aroused and translating them into color, composition and the gestures implicated in the means used.”

Julienne Johnson

TOUCHED #7. Acrylic, Plaster, Hand Mixed Mediums, Chinese Ink, Newsprint, Pigment Transfers with Collage on Canvas, 30” x 40” x 5”

“Julienne Johnson is no less a collagist than she is a painter. Material from the outside world finds its way into almost everything Johnson fabricates, and frequently acts as the spur for generating the artwork itself. By employing collage, Johnson not only signals her interest in the world outside the studio but directly engages that world in her art. That art thus becomes no mere reflection of contemporary life, but a physical part of life’s tissue, and vice versa.” Peter Frank, International Art Critic, Poet, Associate Editor-Fabrik Magazine
