It All Boils Down to Self-Awareness

Paying attention to your body and knowing when you need to take a mental break from things are very essential. As entrepreneurs, we can sometimes get carried away with overworking ourselves and not taking , necessary breaks when the body is tired. One thing I’ve learned is the body will take a break one way or another; rather it’s, voluntary or involuntary. Plan your workdays with small breaks throughout the day to keep yourself from being overwhelmed and burned out. Space some task out rather than trying to do everything in one day. Set up boundaries for yourself away from certain people and social media, stop taking on more projects when you haven’t, finished the ones you already have and prioritize your sleep schedule to at least 6 hours a night. Doing these changes has helped me stay mentally healthy, but I understand everyone is different, so f ind out what works best for you and your mental health and elevate your life.

Consuming fewer processed foods can lead to a better brain and emotional health

From a young age, we’re taught that eating well helps us look and feel our physical best.

What we’re not always told is that good nutrition significantly affects our mental health, too.

A healthy, well-balanced diet can help us think clearly and feel more alert. It can also improve concentration and attention span.

Conversely, an inadequate diet can lead to fatigue, impaired decision-making, and can slow down reaction time. In fact, a poor diet can actually aggravate, and may even lead to stress and depression.

One of the biggest health impairments is society’s reliance on processed foods. These foods are high in flour and sugar and train the brain to crave more of them, rather than nutrient-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables.

A lot of the processed foods we eat are highly addictive and stimulate the dopamine centers in our brain, which are associated with pleasure and reward. In order to stop craving unhealthy foods, you’ve got to stop eating those foods. You actually start to change the physiology in the brain when you pull added sugars and refined carbohydrates from your diet.

STRESS AND DEPRESSION

Sugar and processed foods can lead to inflammation throughout the body and brain, which may contribute to mood disorders, including anxiety and depression. When we’re feeling stressed or depressed, it’s often processed foods we reach for in search of a quick pick-me-up. During busy or difficult periods, a cup of coffee stands in for a complete breakfast and fresh fruits and vegetables are replaced with high-fat, high-calorie fast food. When feeling down, a pint of ice cream becomes dinner (or you skip dinner altogether).

According to the American Dietetic Association,

BRAIN FOOD

To boost your mental health, focus on eating plenty of fruits and vegetables along with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon.

Dark green leafy vegetables in particular are brain protective. Nuts, seeds, and legumes, such as beans and lentils, are also excellent brain foods.

Your brain and nervous system depend on nutrition to build new proteins, cells, and tissues. In order to function effectively, your body requires a variety of carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals. To get all the nutrients that improve mental functioning, nutritionists suggest eating meals and snacks that include a variety of foods, instead of eating the same meals each day.

A HEALTHY GUT

Here are the top three foods to incorporate into a healthy mental diet:

Researchers continue to prove the old adage that you are what you eat, most recently by exploring the strong connection between our intestines and brain. Our guts and brain are physically linked via the vagus nerve, and the two are able to send messages to one another. While the gut is able to influence emotional behavior in the brain, the brain can also alter the type of bacteria living in the gut.

According to the American Psychological Association, gut bacteria produce an array of neurochemicals that the brain uses for the regulation of physiological and mental processes, including mood. It’s believed 95 percent of the body’s supply of serotonin, a mood stabilizer, is produced by gut bacteria. Stress is thought to suppress beneficial gut bacteria.

MINDFUL EATING

Paying attention to how you feel when you eat, and what you eat, is one of the first steps in making sure you’re getting well-balanced meals and snacks. Since many of us don’t pay close attention to our eating habits, nutritionists recommend keeping a food journal. Documenting what, where and when you eat is a great way to gain insight into your patterns.

If you find you overeat when stressed, it may be helpful to stop what you’re doing when the urge to eat arises, and to write down your feelings. By doing this, you may discover what’s really bothering you. If you undereat, it may help to schedule five or six smaller meals instead of three large ones.

Sometimes, stress and depression are severe and can’t be managed alone. For some, eating disorders develop. If you find it hard to control your eating habits, whether you’re eating too

Complex carbohydrates — such as brown rice and starchy vegetables can give you energy. Quinoa, millet, beets, and sweet potatoes have more nutritional value and will keep you satisfied longer than the simple carbohydrates found in sugar and candy.

Lean proteins — also lend energy that allows your body to think and react quickly. Good sources of protein include chicken, meat, fish, eggs, soybeans, nuts, and seeds.

Fatty acids — are crucial for the proper function of your brain and nervous system. You can find them in fish, meat, eggs, nuts, and flaxseeds.

HEALTHY EATING TIPS

Steer clear of processed snack foods, such as potato chips, which can impair your ability to concentrate. Pass up sugar-filled snacks, such as candy and soft drinks, which lead to ups and downs in energy levels.

Consume plenty of healthy fats, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado. This will support your brain function.

Have a healthy snack when hunger strikes, such as fruit, nuts, hard-boiled eggs, baked sweet potatoes, or edamame. This will give you more energy than packaged products.

Develop a healthy shopping list and stick to it.

Don’t shop while hungry, since you’ll be more apt to make unhealthy impulse purchases.

Think about where and when you eat. Don’t eat in front of the television, which can be distracting and cause you to overeat. Instead, find a place to sit, relax and really notice what you’re eating. Chew slowly. Savor the taste and texture.

Eat too little and the resulting exhaustion makes this a hard habit to break. In either case, a poor diet during periods of stress and depression only makes matters worse. This cycle is a vicious one, but it can be overcome.

My name is Andrew Stanford and I’m a 33-year-old native of Tupelo, MS. I have lived in the Memphis area for the last five years working as head of all photography and video for a tool manufacturing company, Great Neck Saw Manufacturing, Inc. I freelance as a photographer/videographer shooting for various local magazines and companies including Focus Magazine, Mississippi Magazine, Friends For Life, and other local businesses and non-profits. I’m a graduate of the Savannah College of Art & Design where I obtained a BFA in Photography and minored in Printmaking. Over the last two years, I have produced over 200 product videos for AutoZone, Walmart, Amazon, and other brand sites. I’m responsible from start to finish with all photo/ video projects. I have also been teaching myself 3D printing and 3D design since December 2020.

In middle school, I was in a tech-focused program that taught us the basics of coding and design. I grasped those concepts quickly and continued practicing at home by designing MySpace pages. One summer, I was bored and decided to see if I could make money online with those skills.

Starting your company Gordon Media Co. at the age of 16, and being in business for over a decade now, what has been the biggest challenge as a young business owner, and what has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned thus far?

My biggest challenge has been showing up consistently in the age of social media, especially as an introvert. For years, I was able to run my business from behind the scenes, but social media has blurred the lines between the person and the brand.

My biggest lesson is to be open to things not going exactly as planned and allow your

path to evolve. I’ve gone through multiple transitions and pivots in my business, each time getting clearer on what I want to do and who I want to serve.

Having a portfolio of working with more than 200+ brands is quite an accomplishment, Congrats!

If you had to choose your top three favorite brands that you’ve worked with, who would it be and why?

I don’t have favorite brands in particular. I’ve worked with big brands in different capacities, like providing website strategy to Procter & Gamble and media relations with GQ. However, my favorite people to work with are individuals, specifically creatives and service-based entrepreneurs.

As a branding strategist, what has been the #1 thing you’ve noticed brands struggle with and why do you think that’s so?

Working with service-based business owners and creatives, I recognized that most struggle because they don’t know how to package their expertise.

Helping entrepreneur clients scale their businesses to attract higher paying customers is your business goal, what influenced you to niche down to working with entrepreneurs, and why?

Entrepreneurs were always my largest clientele starting out, from realtors to photographers and personal trainers. Now, it’s more of a personal choice, possibly because I identify with their struggles and journeys. But, I’ve had great success with both entrepreneurs and larger organizations.

I heard through the grapevine that you are switching gears in your business and transitioning your 1-on-1 services into group coaching/ online courses, tell us more about that.

Being a self-taught artist like a lot of us nowadays, who inspired you to get into the field of graphics and web design?

To make more, I eliminated individual services and created packaged offers. As a result, I made more and my clients got better results. Transitioning into courses and group coaches is the next best step to increase my impact and income without adding more to my long-term workload.

What advice will you give to aspiring designers who want to succeed in this over-saturated market?

The best way to stand out is to get specific not just in what you do but who you do it for. There are a lot of niches for designers, like doing it for music artists and record labels, faith-based nonprofits, or even restaurants. Find your lane, and don’t try to serve everyone.

In the field of managing or starting a business, becoming burned out or overwhelmed is likely to happen sooner or later; How do you manage to keep your mental health under control when going through those tough times?

First, it’s important to take breaks. Second,

periodically reassess your workload and decide if you have too much on your plate, whether that means you need to eliminate some services or raise your prices to be able to make more money with fewer clients.

Outside of your business, can we expect anything from you in this new year?

Hopefully, by transitioning from 1-on-1 services, I have more time for other creative outlets like writing music and exploring some other new business ideas.

Okay, this is a little sidebar, but man your fashion is ON POINT! Where do you shop, and how will you define your style?

I shop a little from everywhere, with a mix of high and low. My current go-to stores are COS, Selfridges, and Bloomingdales. I usually avoid trendy things and gaudy logos. I go for more classic and quality staples that are easy to mix and match, and that last for a long time.

Mercedes describes her journey, “My journey of healing started when I lost my mother…. My mother’s death sent my life on a downward spiral of depression, feelings of rejection, drug abuse, suicidal attempts, and more. With a void in my heart and an ache in my soul, I turned to my last solution, GOD. It was in my relationship with God that I began to explore healthier ways of healing and that is when I began my inner healing process; writing my book, HerStory Breaking Through Darkness, a memoir of my life.

Not too long later after my book was published, I received a supernatural vision about my book becoming a stage play and it was from there where I birthed the stage play, The Narrative of HerStory Breaking Through Darkness.”

While learning how to navigate through life, Mercedes met Tanya Campbell (Mercedes’ spiritual mother) who has been the most influential person in her life. Mercedes pens, “When I first met her, I was spiritually broken and lost. She took

me under her wings, as a spiritual mother and mentor; and poured into my life by way of prayer, words of encouragement, wisdom, and love. More than anything she taught me about the power of prayer.”

The hardships and heartaches of life can sometimes cause us to see life through a different lens. When asked about the best advice she has received, Mercedes revealed, “I was once told, because I grew up without my mother or father my level of tolerance and endurance is higher than those around me and because of this, I must be very sensitive to the feelings and emotions of those around me.”

Mercedes is a living testimony. She has defeated her past, overcame obstacles, and beat the odds. Now, she is walking in her own strength, with her head held high because she knows God is on her side. When asked what song would be featured on her Life’s Soundtrack, she said, “Whitney Houston’s, I Didn’t Know My Own Strength. I choose this song because there was a time when I didn’t know the strength that was on the inside of me until I experienced hardship.

I learned in the midst of hardship I was stronger than I knew.”

Mercedes’ life’s journey epitomizes a triumphant story. She was born in one of the most poverty-stricken areas on the Southside of Chicago, IL. She grew up in a single-parent home, her mother was all that she knew, but things eventually changed for Mercedes. At the age of nine years old, Mercedes life was turned upside down when her mother was murdered. Stricken with fear, depression, and grief; Mercedes turned to writing as a gateway to healing and peace. Her strong determination for inner peace and healing birthed her first book, HerStory Breaking Through Darkness, a memoir of her tragic childhood.

Coming out of an emotionally, physically, and spiritually challenging year of 2020, what will you say the best mindset or habits a person should adopt or develop for success coming into this new year?

Being that 2020 has been one of the most challenging years I’ve ever witnessed, it should’ve been a wake-up call for all of us, not just black people or entrepreneurs, all of us. I think people should practice group economics. We should have a community, a place where we all put our resources together, like having a black wall street; Gathering resources where we can have the basic stuff such as a grocery store, gas station, or pharmacy. We can have more than just barbershops, beauty salons, and boutiques. Memphis, Tennessee is 70% black, we should be able to make this happen, but the problem is, we are unorganized. If we can acquire some sort of organization in creating an ecosystem that will secure the circulation of money within our community; then I believe we’ll be alright.

Facts prove that the black community doesn’t take mental health as seriously as we should; what is your take on mental health, why you think it’s important, and what are some things you do to remain mentally healthy?

When it comes to us

black people and mental health, we don’t take it seriously, and poverty is a mental condition.

We champion poverty. In webster’s dictionary, the word hood is something that covers you. We have taken the word neighborhood and created a dysfunctional circumstance because it is not a community, and we name it The Hood. We take words that are cons and make them pros, in other words calling dysfunctional things functional.

We don’t know how to come together as a family; Not to mention, we can’t even eat at the same table in the house. We rather go to separate rooms, close the door, and instead of talking to each other about our problems or what we’re going through, we go to the internet. Remember the show Family Matters?

The title of the show itself says FAMILY MATTERS. We have no more shows like that, we now have shows called Love & Hip Hop, that don’t even go together, and we’re calling that reality tv when it’s not reality.

Do you see how dysfunctional that is? When it comes to protecting my mental health, I’m very careful and aware of who I have around me. I always try to put myself around forward thinkers. I don’t hang around negative people or listen to toxic news.

What you put in your mouth is what you feed your stomach, and what you listen to through your ears is what you feed your spirit. I just try to be around positive and forward thinkers

In reference to Mind over Matter, how do you maintain to stay driven and consistent on your craft when you don’t feel up to it?

I never ever don’t feel like it, I’m married to it, and it’s a part of me.

I always tell people to find what they love, do proper research, and more than likely it’s always a demographic for it. In business, you’re either selling a product or service. If you like planting flowers or trees and making the world beautiful through landscaping, that’s a service, and people are willing to pay for that; You just have to make sure the business is presented professionally.

As we know, following your dreams is almost like going against the grain. What advice or experience you had that you could share with that person who wants to take that leap of faith but fears the unknown?

It’s cool to have a dream, but it’s better to have a mockup. For example, when you first thought about doing this magazine, and you got the first mockup,

getting that idea out of your head and getting a physical copy. You were dreaming about it in your head, you did the proper research, work with the appropriate programs you had to use, printed it off, and kept your fingers crossed, hoping everything was right when it came in the mail. Even if it wasn’t right, you got your first copy. From there, you could try it again until you get it how you want it, but the thing is, don’t just be a dreamer, be a producer as well.

If you had one minute to talk to your younger self, what advice or things would you say to yourself then that you know now?

I would say, don’t hold back on your talents and gifts. I was always connected to my gifts, but I use to hold back because I didn’t want people to think I was trying to outdo them. So I just lowered my talent to what everyone else could do. If everyone was a C thinker, I then lowered myself to a C thinker; Basically, becoming a people pleaser. Today, I’m like you either get it, or you don’t and leave it at that.

In this new year, what can we expect or be on the lookout to see from you? Any upcoming projects?

You will see more of the 901 Union and MovieGo projects coming out. One of the biggest things we’re working on is the 901 Union Event Calendar for the culture.

We’re also planning a retreat next year called Cabins, Concepts, and Creatives. Four days and three nights retreat bringing all the creatives in Memphis and people with concepts together under one roof.

Every night will be a different event, like an indie film night or poetry night. We’ll have a personal chef and plenty of opportunities to network for the whole retreat; So that’s a couple of the big projects we’re working on at the moment, so stay tuned.

Rest... mind, body, and spirit. 2020 was globally unlike anything any of us, anywhere and everywhere had ever seen. It was literally health and wellness, pandemic, pandemonium from the President, politics, police brutality, parents teaching, teachers virtually, from daycare to postgraduate to professional, law and medical school, preachers preaching like never before, even megachurches had few in the room. People coming and people going, round and round, up and down in grocery aisles almost lined single file. First Responders are sometimes disrespected publicly due to policy or privately with a gun. Thirteen years of K-12 and no traditional prom or graduation.

Some folks masking up, some not. The truth of it all is in the eyes or by and by. By the end of 2020, most all humans had been traumatized, if not ever before in their life, at this point in their life. Way too late for a do-over.

I recommend professional counseling from an individual that is licensed, certified, and qualified, preferably within whatever faith you proclaim, if any. Also, find the best counselor for you within your faith. All counselors

are not created equally. Find the one that is perfect for you. Psychologists and psychiatrists are the new rock stars.

The litmus test is peace.

Facts prove that the black community doesn’t take mental health as seriously as we should; what is your take on mental health, why you think it’s important, and what are some things you do to remain mentally healthy?

In my opinion, Mental Health has not been taken seriously by society holistically for humanity. I believe mental illness has existed in our world for eons. However, I know that it has not been addressed fairly in families and most often not proactively. The disparities exist due to no information, misinformation, and often shame in the Black Community. However, the shame should rest with those that are able to provide the resources to identify, assess, and effectively treat the illness, and choose not to do so because of a patient’s inability to pay.

I think mental health is important because a healthy mind helps us to fulfill our personal and professional obligations and God’s Purpose for our lives.

Maintaining healthy mental health looks different for each person and is also subject to change. What worked in one situation and/or season of your life may be different in another.

Personally, I move by the Spirit to achieve and maintain a healthy mental health. That

I have found that when one is given a GOD Idea, there is a different level of purpose responsibility. There is usually a feeling of wanting to continue working long unreasonable hours, rather than not feeling up to it. It is what drives you.

up and bless your life to be a blessing to others and bring glory to God. As we know, following your dreams is almost like going against the grain. What advice or experience you had that you could share with that person who wants to take that leap of faith but fears the unknown?

If you have a dream, ask God is that His dream for your life and wait for Him to answer.

If He says, “No”, hear that and obey. If He says, “Wait”, hear that and obey. If He is silent, that is either free will for you to make your own decision or wait for further instructions or revelation. If He says, “Yes”, hear that and obey. Your only questions should be “When” and “How”? The answers to who, what, where, and why will show up on time. Where God guides, He provides. The way will be made. Your response to any and/ or all of His answers should be “Thank you.”

God is always either trying to get something to us or protect us from something.

If you had one minute to talk to your younger self, what advice or

things would you say to yourself then that you know now?

If I had one minute to talk to my younger self, I would tell her that you are here for a purpose. You must grieve your losses, the sooner the process starts the better. Pay attention to your giftings. Being unique is a gift from God. We all look just like God because we are all made in His image.

Other people’s opinions of you are none of your business and their rejection of you is their loss and God protecting you. You are loved. You are good enough. Your latter will be greater than your past. The best is yet to come. For with God, nothing is impossible.

In this new year, what can we expect or be on the lookout to see from you? Any upcoming projects?

In 2021, you can expect to see more interviews and new menu items on a newly built website for Aspiring To Be Read due to space limitations on the previous platform. I am planning an expansion of my new brand and business, Just Bee Happy. It is a family-ran brand and new online store.

includes being flexible with my start of the day, having quiet time with God, mostly through my devotionals, dancing in my home, listening to music, reading books, praying, attending virtual church, and inspiring others.

We all have challenges and eating consistently and healthy is one of mine. Due to personal and health reasons, grocery shopping is a hardship for me. So, I rarely go shopping and when I do, I need a mental health break when I return. I also talk with my family, friends, church members, and high school classmates.

They bring me joy and I try to reciprocate it.

I would say the mindset of staying in power and resilience. I have a saying that says we are not going through things; we are growing through things. I have a strategy that I use anytime I am growing through something, and it works every time. I call it the Strategy Through The Storm.

It’s five steps, and when effectively applied, it always produces great results.

Step 1: Accept and Evaluate Denial does nothing for you. If you do not accept what is- then your future will continuously re-create what was, and you cannot move forward until you first accept where you are.

Once you accept where you are when any situation arises, then evaluate in specific detail why you are there and where you would like to go.

Step 2: Lock into your life’s mission (or discover it) When you are grounded in a vision for your life and you are focused on a purpose that is greater than the monotonous of the day, your distractions become demagnetized and don’t hold weight in your life. You can’t hit a target you don’t have.

Step 3: Adapt

Anytime life throws anything at you, it’s important to adjust because the essence of life is growth, and change brings growth. Cell phones evolve according to modern technology, so why wouldn’t we as humans continuously evolve according to the modern world?

Step 4: Create Anytime you focus on creating something, you are using the majority of your brainpower which also takes your focus off everything else. Your mind and heart are intact when you are in the act of creating, which also gives you a sense of fulfillment and stimulation.

Step 5: Connect When you develop a daily discipline to connect with yourself and invest in personal growth, it allows you to fill your own cup, and everyone else will benefit from your overflow.

Well, one of the biggest reasons why mental health isn’t a priority in the black community is because for decades there hasn’t been awareness around that conversation, and you can’t change what you’re not aware of.

Some days I don’t feel like working out or eating healthy, but that’s not a reason to not do it. That’s the weapons of mass distractions trying to test me, so I turn it all into

The intention is to lower my cortisol levels and boost my serotonin. This quick little burst gives me an amazing edge and stimulates my brain.)

own lives, so it’s giving more people a safe space to share their stories as well. With awareness, people then have the opportunity to learn the value of being mentally healthy. I truly believe that people are doing the best they can with what they know, so it’s up to the health-conscious people to bring this awareness to the communities and share why it is important. The outside is the physical manifestation of what’s going on inside the brain.

2020 was a year of Unplanned, Unpredicted, and Unbelievable circumstances that created global awareness and consciousness. It made the world stand still and take inventory of what is important, necessary, and great about being human beings co-existing here on earth. 2020 taught us how we all need each other to co-habit in a compassionate, respectful manner and the importance of our health individually and collectively.

Personally, I battle depression, so mental health is very important to me because depression is one of those taboo subjects that the Black Community as a whole seems to ignore, refuse to accept, or acknowledge; yet, depression plagues our families and communities every day in every way. That is why YAMS constantly tries to raise awareness and share my journey with mental

health. The root cause of most of our sickness and dis-ease comes from stress and lack of knowledge about the importance of mental health. Doctors can only prescribe drugs to treat mental health problems instead of advising patients on how to live their day-to-day lives. Not helping us recognize the triggers, symptoms, implement natural or spiritual medicines, and disciplines to help the mind stay balanced, focused, and calm. I am currently taking CBD oil daily and it is helping me to fight depression. I also meditate daily and try to live a stress-free life which can be difficult when you work on a corporate plantation like most of us do.

In reference to Mind over Matter, how do you maintain to stay driven and consistent on your craft when you don’t feel up to it?

Depression takes away your drive, ambition, and passion; I must admit that it is a constant fight sometimes to accomplish the goals I’ve set for myself. I’ve learned to do one or two projects at a time so that I won’t feel overwhelmed and anxious.

I have to pace myself and not beat myself up if I don’t get to finish something in the time frame that I originally set as a goal to complete a project.

Following your dreams and living your purpose is definitely going against the grain; we have been conditioned to follow the “status quo” of getting an education, get a job at a corporate plantation, and live unhappily ever after. That is the socalled American Dream.

My advice to anyone who wants to follow their dreams is to first, Believe in Yourself! Trust Yourself! Love Yourself!

Know Yourself! and Stop trying to please everyone else. When we learned to believe in ourselves and the Vision that God has given us we become Empowered, Enlightened, Focused, and Driven to Succeed in life. We all have the seed of greatness within us, and no one can manifest that seed but us.

I would say that for success, a mindset one should adopt is the “It’s on fire” rule.When one generally has an idea, we give it the 5 minutes of feasibility. “Can it work? How much would it take to work?, and can I do it?” Applying the “It’s on fire rule” gives you the automatic permission to develop, try, and perfect your contribution to the world. Also, this mindset doesn’t give you the room for doubt or fear to deter from realizing that thing you are passionate about. In layman’s terms, be obsessed over ideas and projects only you can give to society. Without you giving birth to that idea, project, or invention, you leave the world without innovation or progress. Birthing whatever it is can change the world!

I think mental health has always been very important for everyone. However, the Black community has giv-

en concessions to the importance of mental health because of lack of access and other various reasons in comparison to other racial groups. Mental health is the real silent killer amongst other medical needs and should not be ignored because there are no symptoms. Moreover, it’s safe to say that Black communities’ way of life in America is traumatic all in itself.

I usually address my mental health needs by utilizing counseling. In between visits I am vigilant of stress and traumatic experiences and triggers. When they occur, I retreat to my creative space with writing, singing, and implementing self care days to center myself before returning to the world.

In reference to Mind over Matter, how do you maintain to stay driven and consistent on your craft when you don’t feel up to it?

I stay driven and consistent with my craft by treating my talent like “It’s on fire”. I know this is repetitive, but It works! I treat each moment with my craft like it could be taken away at any time.

Using this idea keeps me focused on not just starting that great project but finishing it with a plan to introduce it to the world.

As we know, following your dreams is almost like going against the grain. What advice or experience you had that you could share with that person who wants to take that

leap of faith but fears the unknown?

Advice that I can give to anyone being paralyzed by fear is to know that your fear is actually a fathom of your own imagination. Your imagination can be the unbeatable foe or the fuel that drives you to success. It’s all in how you approach the ledge when taking the leap….

DON’T LOOK DOWN! I usually tell clients that I consult that if you want to fly, you will have to have the guts to test your wings. Preparing for flight is 80 percent preparation and 20 percent activation. In flight preparation, the process can be the unbeatable foe I mentioned. This phase is where you’re building your muscle to not only be able to fly, but to also mentally prepare to soar over the enemy’s sight unseen. Think about it! There are elements in this world that are designed to destroy your flight plan before you even thought to take the leap. They have thought about all of the ways to corner from escaping a fiery crash to a level lower than where your faith began.

The AUDACITY of your inspiration, the AUDACITY of your HOPE, and

the AUDACITY of your attempt to defy gravity in your position in life pisses people off. When you get to the edge of complacency about where you are, being allied with the source of your strength and your preparation will make it possible to upset your nay-saying conscience and those against you.

Remember, JUMP and DON’T LOOK DOWN! If you had one minute to talk to your younger self, what advice or things would you say to yourself then that you know now?

Dewayne Murrell is a Memphis native who began his work in the community in 2003. Dewayne focused primarily on the added hardships of being both LGBTQ+ and a person of color.This work helped him to identify barriers that systematically oppress and disenfranchise Black LGBTQ+ people in Memphis. Dewayne then developed an idea to offer a positive foundation and services to assist Black LGBTQ+ folk that fell through the cracks from other resources in the city. That idea was the beginning of his early plan for what now is the 501c3, The PAIGE Inc. Nonetheless, on his journey in 2010, he continued to serve as a volunteer for various programs until taking his skills to Los Angeles, California as a peer health educator for High risk negative gays and meth users.

Are you in a dead-end job? Perhaps you are underemployed? Is it a struggle to pull yourself out of bed each morning and get to work? It might be time to quit your job.

Quitting a job that pays well, has good benefits, and is relatively stable is hard to do, especially in today’s economic climate.

However, if you’re unhappy or if you aren’t where you want to be, then it might be time to consider doing something else.

Have you ever woken up and wondered what you were doing with your life? Did you feel like you were stuck in a haze, unsure of what you were doing to make a difference each day? Unmotivated to work hard? It’s pretty much a recipe for disaster.

If you’re scared to quit your job, remember that being unhappy, inefficient, and unpleasant in the workforce will do much more detriment to your career than quitting ever will.

So if you are finding each day a struggle and you aren’t sure where to turn next, before up and quitting your job, try the following:

Research what it is about your job that you don’t like.

Make a list of the things about your job you enjoy and the things you would change given the opportunity. This way when you start hunting for your new job you will know exactly what to look for.

Figure out what your skills are.

It’s very important to know what you are good at and what you are bad at. Make yet another list of the qualities and skills you possess that can help you be amazing at your job.

Don’t know where to start? The best thing to do is to ask someone close to you what they think your skills are.

If you’ve been out of school for a little while chances are you’ve fallen a bit behind when it comes to your skills. Take an online course on a topic that interests you, there are lots of free ones out there. Plus you can put this on your resume as continuing education.

Save some money.

If you plan on quitting by a certain time you may want to stash away a couple of months worth of pay, just in case it takes you longer than you originally thought to find a job.

If you are waiting to quit until you have a new job you may still want to sock a bit of extra cash away in case you want to start a job that pays a little less. This way you can pursue your dream career without it affecting your bank account.

Tell your network.

Your weak ties are the most likely connections that will help you find a job. Mention that while you have no firm plans on quitting your current position you would be interested in pursuing a new position. You never know who might surprise you with your dream job… all you have to do is ask.

If you’re unhappy or if you aren’t where you want to be, then it might be time to consider doing something else.

Carl “Sax Dragon” Catron is a Europe-based, freelance saxophonist. He was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He began his career in music as a pianist at the age of 7 years old. by Kevin Roache I recall being fortunate, or unfortunate, enough to attend my college reunion last Christmas. This occasion was a real eye opener to me. I was definitely out of my comfort zone. I got to meet people I hadn’t even thought about for the last three decades.

Honesty began to unfold as the wine flowed.

What became apparent quite quickly was that we had all passed middle age, the Pareto principle kicked in with about 80% of my ex-classmates admitting that they were extremely dissatisfied or miserable with how their lives had evolved.

“It feels like I’ve wasted my whole life, and I’m already three-quarters of the way through it,” was 41 the consensus of the 80%.

The second realization that became quite quickly apparent was the fact that all of the 20% had studied either creative arts or humanities related subjects. The joy of learning and the acquiring of knowledge in order to later apply it in a meaningful way became a key proponent of my theory that contentment, if not happiness, resulted from knowledge acquisition.

I felt must know more about the 20%. I also found out none of them had felt as though they had so far wasted a single minute of their lives to date.

Constantly acquiring new knowledge, and enriching the lives of others along the way, seemed to be the other essential component of contentment and passion. Adding value and constantly adding to their knowledge were the two processes that would lead to my identification of the 5 steps to knowing your purpose.

These are: 1. Know who you are.

2. Know what you are doing.

3. Know who you do it for.

4. Know what the people you help want or need.

5. Know what the people you help get from what you provide.

We all know that when you selflessly provide value, you are rewarded in many ways as result. If you can focus your life’s efforts on enriching other people instead of grasping for all you can, extraordinary things do happen. Not least the boosting of your wellness, self-esteem, happiness, and contentment.

The identified 5 steps to finding your purpose do warrant further explanation. As only the first 2 are about you, the remaining 3 focus on you helping others. This, of course, leads to where you need/ want to be as fervent 20%er.

Further explanation 1. Knowing who you are includes more of an indepth knowledge of your motivations and modus operandi. Just knowing your name is a start though.

2. Again, knowing a little more in-depth about what it is you immerse your time and energies into delivering on a daily basis. Having goals based around some sort of planned objectives is good.

3. Identifying your ‘target market’ is a must. Do you want to make children’s dreams come true? You write children’s stories. Do you design apparel for men and women who need affordable choices?

You’re a fashion designer. Whatever niche you wish to inhabit try to provide value.

4. The help and value you provide should coincide with what those who you seek to help overcome their difficulties, require. You will need to have an understanding of these people.

5. Have a deep understanding of how what you provide is positively impacting those you are attempting to support. The feeling of contentment/ happiness will come from you being able to see how you have made a positive contribution.

What inspired your transition into becoming a massage therapist alongside being an actor; What influenced that decision?

My personal life had become so challenging that I needed a serious change. I always wanted to become a massage therapist, I just never knew how or when I would have the time & money to go to school for it.

There was a moment back in 2015 when all the stress in my life took its toll, and I had a mental breakdown.

My back was against the wall, and at that

moment, I felt it was the exact moment to take the leap and sign up for school to pursue my love and passion for massage therapy.

Now I love the name of your business Sensefuel Massage.

What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name?

Thank you! My business name is a play-off of the words sensual and fuel. When you break it down to its simplest form, sensual means full of feeling/sensation, and fuel means energy. So I melded the two words to describe the feeling and effect you will receive from my

work.

How has the pandemic affected your business or what have you been able to do to combat the pandemic in relation to your business?

I have been blessed in the fact that my business hasn’t been too affected by the pandemic. I feel that there are people out there who are well informed and understand what’s going on, and understand the true benefit of massage therapy- which is that it helps keep you healthy and boosts your immune system. In relation to mind over matter or mental health, I feel that massage therapy benefits the consumer by allowing them to have a moment to just focus on themselves, their breath, and how good they feel or how their body feels in general. We focus on the breath during each session. A meditation hour if you will. Focusing on your breath while your mind wanders will naturally take you on a journey of self-realization. Realization of your thoughts, or even awareness of how hard it is for you to relax.

Once you are aware, you can start taking the steps to correct/adjust the situation. There is nothing but power in that. Massage is outstanding at helping you to let go and trust again, that is going to affect the rest of your life in the most positive ways and will help fast track to your healing.

To put it most simply, pain is a blockage of smooth energy flow.

If the energy can not flow freely through your body then you’re going to have pain.

The best way to keep the energy flowing freely through your body is by stretching, drinking lots of water (on avg. a gallon a day) so that the cells and blood and all the fluids in your body can move around the body naturally. Your posture, when sitting for long periods of time, starts to slip 45 into weird positions that cut off blood flow to different areas causing the pain signal (your body saying “Hey, I need your attention”).

Going unchecked will cause deeper pain.

Meaning more work to get it out. Focus on the breath. Breath moves your muscles and tissues. Think of the breath as the gas for your muscles to move. Water moves tissue and fluids and hydrates the cells. Stretching also moves the muscles and keeps them lean and healthy.

All these things are going to keep the pathways in your body more open and

give you less pain, so that when you come for your massage, we just have to do some maintenance work. Like we won’t have to pull the refrigerator out and clean behind it, we can just clean the surface of the fridge and you’ll be good to go. You know, that kind of idea.

Before COVID-19 I faithfully treated myself to a deep-tissue massage at least once a month at my local massage parlor. What are some of your most requested massages, and what are the benefits?

Well, my most requested massage is most definitely SenseFuel massage. SenseFuel is amazing because it mixes deep pressure and lomi-lomi, which is a connective flowing massage technique that connects the upper and lower regions of the body. It mixes pretty much everything that people go to massage for it is an all in one.

Deep-tissue is popular too because people tend to wait until they’re in a lot of pain to go get a massage, so when they’re at that level they want the deepest work so they feel that they are really getting it out. Whether deep pressure is necessary, who knows, but psychologically people think that the deeper work will help. Sometimes it does, sometimes it’s not necessary.

For a person who’s never gotten a professional massage before, what will be your request they try

for the first time and why?

Wow, another great question. I suggest your first professional massage to try a Swedish massage. With Swedish, you will get a general idea of what it feels like to push things around your body- to move energy around your body. It will help you get acclimated to what professional hands feel like.

So what can we expect to see from you or Sensefuel Massage in the next 3-5years?

You can expect to see personally developed products that I know will benefit your mental and physical health. You can expect to see new and unique treatments, and will see new and unique ways of performing massage therapy. You can expect to see a melding of worlds (art, health, wellness, and beauty). You can expect to see growth and expansion in all ways.

For someone who may be thinking about a career change or transition, what advice would you give them?

I say that everything we do takes some form of sacrifice, whether it’s something you want to do or something you have to do. So you might as well just make the sacrifice for yourself. Be really honest and clear about why you’re doing what you’re doing, and if it makes sense to you, do it. Just take the chance and do it. The only other option is to do something that

the client. I know for me, I suffer from a lot of lower back pain which I later found out it comes from my slouching posture. What are some tips we can do at home to eliminate some of our body aches prior to coming to a massage therapist?

I say take the leap of faith and sacrifice a little current comfort to achieve greater comfort, fulfillment for your future self.

I would say whatever you do, do what is truly in your heart. Whether that be by the clothes you wear, the way you speak, or what you do for a living. Strive to do what feels right to you.

It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else.

No one else has to understand your vision. If you know in your mind, your heart, and your body that you can do it, do it. That is the major key to happiness on this plane and will allow your soul to manifest and animate through your human body, therefore expanding your experience while here on Earth.

We love your slogan, Positive thoughts at all times; it’s definitely something that’s needed after a rough mentally, physically, and emotionally year of 2020. What are some things you do to keep your mental health in check, and what would you suggest for others to try?

2020 was DEFINITELY a wild ride for all of us. It was one of

the toughest years of my life. Usually, it’s like one year you’ll have this happen, then one year you’re dealing with something else. 2020 was like “I’m hitting you with everything all at once”. As bad as it was, I can honestly say it was also THE best year of my life. In a way, I felt like it was what I’ve been training for my whole life.

To keep my mental health in check, I NEVER let heavy things sit on my mind. The best thing I’ve done is speak up to

someone about the issues in my life that I am facing. This can be anybody you’re comfortable with. It can be an actual doctor, a friend, a family member, or even a random group of people on a self-help forum will do. The idea is to never hold those heavy things in. Getting them out there will help take the unnecessary burden off your shoulders.

A lot of us have been told that speaking up about personal issues is a sign of weakness;

I say it’s the total opposite. I’m not trying to take 50 years to fix some personal issues; I want it handled ASAP. In my opinion, the best way to do that is to just get it all out there. Get it off your mind, and on to the table where we can dissect it. That way we

As a mental health advocate, what encouraged you to take it more seriously, and what is your intended message you try to get through to your supporters?

Hitting rock bottom in life is what made me start taking mental health seriously. Really it was me losing everything in life chasing all of the wrong things.

Women, attention from people I don’t need it from, and materialistic things that don’t really matter. After losing everything, feeling hopeless, not having anybody close to really talk to or seek help from, I was kind of forced to sit in my mess and deal with it. With nowhere to run to and nobody to put the blame on, I had to finally take responsibility for my life. The first thing I did was reconnect with God; after that, I then started talking to my mental health counselor who I already had for free

as a veteran due to my service in the Army.

Next thing you know, everything started working out, and here we are almost 3 years later. Of course, it wasn’t a smooth ride, and honestly, it still isn’t, but the difference is, it’s no longer a pointless journey. I feel like I was put through most of the negatives for a reason.

To help others in similar situations get through their tough moments. I know what it’s like to be down and out. I know what it’s like to not have anybody around to help you. I know what it’s like to call out for help and still get ignored. So I promised myself that I’ll be that help for someone else. I’ll be the big brother I never had.

Who is your biggest influence(s) and why?

My biggest influence in life is Kevin Gates. I found his music sometime back in 2014/2015. I was in a real dark place at the time. Dealing with PTSD from my deployment to Afghanistan and other personal issues including a breakup with my girlfriend at the time, issues within my family, and childhood trauma that was starting to resurface. His music stood out to me because he was talking

about the same issues I was going through. He came from the bottom and made it to the top.

Through all of life’s ups and downs, he was still able to make it. Seeing that, hearing that, and actually being a witness to it was exactly what I needed to help me start my own journey. And so I did. He’s been able to help me through everything with his music. He has a song for pretty much every struggle of mine. His faith and strong connection with God made it easier for me to reconnect as well. Seeing him publicly proclaim his love for God and openly talk about his spirituality made it very easy for me to do too.

We love what you’re doing on social media with your Mornings with Baris, what inspired this series?

Mornings with Baris was honestly just a random idea I came up with on the spot. Almost all of my content is spon-

He knew it was time to choose a different way of living and start seeking positive habits. So he decided to join the Army back in 2013 to get a fresh start on life. What started out as the best decision of his life led him to be diagnosed with PTSD. Stuck on pride, he refused to ask for help when he needed it most.

One day after being at an all-time low he built the courage to go to church, and later got baptized to withness his life slowly getting better. Not much into religion but believes in Jesus and acknowledges that he want to spend his time using his experiences in life to be a safe space and big brother to those who go through similar experiences.

Along your journey thus far, what has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned and the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far is to always believe in yourself. Although I’m only 30 years old and still kind of figuring myself out, I’ve been through a lot already and can honestly say the only thing I wish I would’ve done more of and started sooner, was to believe in myself. I missed a lot of opportunities in life, not because I wasn’t good enough, but because I didn’t believe in myself enough. I valued the opinions of other people more than my own. I lived my early years for oth49 ers. Doing what they thought was best for me.

Allowing other people to dictate what should and shouldn’t happen in my life...

Looking back on everything now, I feel silly for not believing in myself. I could’ve dodged a lot more BS if I would’ve taken myself as seriously as I took others.

Everything happens for a reason though.

Honestly, If it weren’t for those moments, I wouldn’t be able to understand just how important believing in myself really is. So in a way, I’m actually grateful for those times.

I guess it’s just one of

those things where you know it’s necessary but still hate that it had to happen. And my biggest challenge so far is having patience. I still struggle with this today actually. I’ve always been the type to move on to something better if I didn’t get the results I wanted in the time that I wanted. I’ve been this way since I was a kid for pretty much everything in life.

Patience is needed for any and everything on this planet. If I could go back and give advice to my 18-year-old self, I’d say, for the next 10 years, whatever you plan on doing, make sure you believe in yourself and practice active patience.

As we know, following your dreams is almost like going against the grain. What advice or experience you had that you can share with that person who wants to take that leap of faith but fears the unknown?

Following your dreams is definitely like going against the grain, especially in today’s society where most people just like to do what everybody else is doing or whatever brings them the most security.

Unfortunately, when following your dreams, you have to be willing to sacrifice these two.

Yes, it’s gonna be scary, hard, and there’s gonna be plenty of times of uncertainty but, as long as you keep your eyes on the prize (your goals and accomplishments) nothing will stop you. Yes, the path will change many times,

but if you’re focused on what you want, everything will happen for you, instead of to you... if that makes sense.

In the end, I’d rather try and fail, then to never try and always wonder what could’ve been.

That alone gives me all the motivation I need to chase my dreams. Even if you do fail, it’s not really a failure; you’ve gained knowledge, experience, insight, etc.

None of that could’ve been possible if you never tried. And with that, you can continue down a different path that you couldn’t have before.

So what’s next for Baris? Any upcoming projects?

I’ve been thinking about doing more motivational skits lately so I’m probably going to start rolling some of those out on top of my usual motivational content.

If I can find a way to turn my pain into passion and help the next person with it, I’m doing it.

You know, growing up I’ve always admired the careers of Adrianne Bailon and Nick Cannon because their careers have been so multifaceted. From acting to doing music, even hosting shows is always something I love doing and always wanted to do.

I came across you on the Web series The Circle, and you’ve given me plenty of LOL moments! Your personality is so fun, and I love it! If you had the opportunity to work with your dream actor or actress who will it be and why?

I would love to work with Raven Symone and Jim Carey. I think they’re brilliant and their comedic range is so good.

I think it’ll be a blast to have the opportunity to work with them. Hell, I’ll be good with just meeting them.

Acting is such an over-saturated field, what advice will you give an aspiring actor on how to stand out in such a crowded field?

You really have to be yourself and let your personality shine; That what’s driving the in-

dustry right now - big personalities. Also, you have to really find and understand what your niche is.

Throughout your career thus far, what has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned and the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

You have to asset who you are and learn how to take risks. Life is about taking risks and going for what you believe is meant for you.

Having feelings can/ will hinder your career.

That’s what I’ve learned and experience. That’s a fact.

In reference to Mind over Matter, how do you maintain to stay driven and consistent on your craft when you don’t feel up to it?

Having the ability to take yourself out of a dark space is a skill that is learned with time and self-discipline. I often just take time to think about my plans and how I can execute them to the best of my ability.

Actor, artist, media personality, and social media influencer, Travis ‘TD’ Demetri also known as ‘The Kidd’ is a Bronx native. He has been bringing laughter to the hearts around him since early in his career. Demetri graduated from University High School in Orlando, FL, and furthered honed his acting craft at The American Musical Dramatic Academy NY. Demetri made his off-Broadway debut in 2012 in the comedy, The Gayest Christmas Pageant. Demetri has had the privilege to work professionally across a diaspora of different platforms ranging from The Midtown International Theater Festival, NY Fashion Week, and opening up for artists like Megan Thee Stallion.

Currently, Demetri is completing his first mix-tape after the release of his single “Rock With Me”. Demetri’s authenticity and dedication keep him shining in the spotlight. He began sharing his 14-year journey with me. “My journey has been pretty interesting. I wanted to be an actor when I was in High School but I never pursued it because basketball was my first passion. After college, I pursued a professional basketball career and became a professional basketball entertainer for 7 years. That career opened the door for me to merge my passions, acting while on the basketball court. That spark gave me the push that I needed to pursue acting after I retired from basketball.” He continued, “This road has not been easy but I made it to this point by being consistent and never giving up because in this business you will face a lot of rejection. My greatest struggle was learning to be patient no matter how many times I was rejected. Sometimes you feel like you’re a perfect fit for a role and feel that you did a good job but you still may not get casted. I had to humble myself and find a balance. Bill Duke once told me, “…this business has a lot of ups and downs so make sure you ride the wave when things are up and save, save, save because you can hit a low and go a long time without working so make sure you balance things out.” I think that is a lesson everyone should remember.

ciously said, “If there was one thing that I could change about my journey it would be to start pursuing acting earlier than I did. It takes a very long time to become an accomplished actor. I started out late and although I have some huge accomplishments, I feel that had I started earlier I would be farther along than I am. Being connected to “big names”, there are many people who view Ketrick as a role model. So, I asked him what advice would he share with them? Ketrick gave a soft response, “One of my greatest accomplishments was landing a speaking role on a Netflix original film and receiving an opportunity to work alongside some big name actors like Brian White and Michael Rainey Jr. as well as landing a role on the hit television show Fatal Attraction. So you have to work hard and believe in yourself. Don’t listen to people when they tell you that you can’t do something or that you’re wasting your time. Always dream big, stay focused and put God first.”

Ketrick “Jazz” Copeland was born and raised in Senatobia, Mississippi, a small town just 30 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Rust College in Holly Springs, MS where he received his BA in Television Productions.

Ketrick played basketball at Rust for 4 years and earned numerous awards including the Kenzell Lawson Sports Award. He became a professional show basketball entertainer after college and had a successful 7-year run. Not long after he went into retirement, he felt that there was something missing. Copeland was sure that his athletic career had run its course but the passion and love to perform never left. This led him to re-discover his passion for entertainment.

So, balance? That’s a daily struggle. Daily.

What I’ve found to work for me is NOT hitting the floor as soon as my eyes open. This is because I’m not a gradually waking person.

I wake with my mind processing, seriously.

It’s not on 10 but definitely 7.5. If I can catch myself before allowing my mind to dictate my movements, my day goes much smoother.

What I mean is I need to orient myself, wait until I’ve reached full consciousness (cause mental auto-pilot is real), take time to give God thanks for a safe night and for the gifts of mercy and purpose.

God is my center, my beginning, and my ending; My all. Just focusing on Him before I began my day brings peace to the chaos of my unconsciousness, and allows me to focus. Another thing I’ve recently started is planning my week on Mondays. Big help.

My toughest challenge?

Consistency. I have yet to get to that place of consistently updating my social media pages, or consistently advertising my product.

Just thinking about it makes me cringe. Like, why?! This is YOUR stuff!

What’s the problem?

Lol! My biggest lesson?

Hmmm…. I would have to say that would be learning to stop kicking myself when I was already down. I’m not a people person, so I don’t have a lot of friends.

And those that I do have were not entrepreneurs at the time.

So, I didn’t have this circle to call up and ask questions. I was making a lot of mistakes in the beginning, and instead of chalking them up to learning experiences, all I could see was one failure after another. I had plenty of encouragers, but my own voice undermined all the good they poured into me. I had to learn how to be my own cheerleader. Not because I didn’t have a squad, but because I did. It does no good to have a team that you are unable or worse, unwilling to lead.

I was doing myself and others a great disservice. I realized that and

have become mindful to purposely encourage myself on a daily basis.

I heard a fun fact that you call your customers cookie monsters— I LOVE THAT! Tell us a little bit more about your cookie business, where can we order some, and possibly becoming new cookie monsters as well?

Here’s another fun fact, Craving for Cookies wasn’t intentional. I never aspired to have a cookie business. I baked for my grandbabies as a fun activity when I had them. One day a member of the ministry brought boxes of peanut butter to be dispersed among the members. Of course, I got some—grands equal pb&j sandwiches and cookies. Anyway, cutting cross-field, a member ended up bringing me his peanut butter to make him some cookies. He shared said cookies and those people wanted peanut butter cookies. I made those too. Those people then wanted to know if I could do chocolate chip cookies. I hadn’t but knew I could and I did. Then they hit me with the big question: How much do I owe you? The rest

is history. Every cookie on the menu is there because a customer or potential customer would ask, “do you make…?” The answer was always “yes”. To all my cookie monsters, this all started with Elder Michael T. Randle wanting to know if I would take his peanut butter and make him some cookies. Thanks Randle!!!! I am currently taking orders through facebook messenger on the Craving for Cookies page. 24hr notice for a regular order, and 72 hr notice for parties.

What advice will you give those who are trying to get into the cooking business?

Go into it knowing that cooking is only, at the most, 20% of the work.

You’ve got to familiarize yourself with logistics/ purchasing and marketing/advertising.

If you’re an introvert, prepare for the conversation. If you’re an extrovert, learn to focus your conversation. Do not expect instant gratification—it’s not gonna happen. Show your internal customers as much appreciation as your external customers. Meaning, give family members the same priority as a stranger.

ways remember that you have been giving them free meals forever. In your mind, this may justify them paying. Family or not, the consumer does not share the mindset of the provider/ businessperson/ entrepreneur. Know the “Why?” behind wanting to start your cooking business.

Understand the “why” has to be able to sustain you when there is no profit and there is no reason to continue other than the “why” itself. Oh! Let’s not forget customer service! If you are not able to be wrong knowing you are right, food service is not for you. At no time is it ok to argue with a customer, publicly or privately.

You’re going to have customers who are downright evil and you have to be able 59 to handle it professionally. Even if handling it means severing the relationship or losing the customer, it still has to be done with poise and grace.

Who is your biggest musical influence(s) and why?

I can’t name just one.

Etta James, Shirley Caesar, Grace King, Anita Baker, Aaron Hall, R. Kelly, there are more, but they are the utmost in my mind. Though I love their styles, what influences me is their passion. Their heart is in it, you know? I don’t care how good you sound; if it doesn’t move me, keep it.

I heard through the grapevine that your brand new single “The One” is out! Congrats!

What is the message behind this song and where can we go listen to it?

This song is a prayer to God from a woman regarding the man her heart has been opened to. She’s made mistakes in this area of her life.

This time though, she’s coming to God “before” she’s made a decision to give this man all of her. Yes, she loves him, but if he is not The One, she wants to know now so she can walk away.

She’s submitted to God’s will in this area of her life as with all the others, but if he is The One? “God bless him, bless me, bless us.”

How will you describe your sound, and what type of music can we expect to hear from you in the future?

Gospel and Soul music.

I want to touch people when I sing. Not just another voice. If I had my way, there would be healing, happiness, joy, encouragement, whatever their need, the music would find its way there.

Anything else outside of your music coming down the pipeline for you this year?

Yes! There is The Lost and Found SAGA: The Alexandria Story. It was originally a play but is now a film; written and directed by yours truly. It’s starring Tijuana Kimble, who I must

say gave an awesome performance.

It’s produced by Dellguan Coleman and will be presented on the MovieGo platform.

I’m working on a video for The One with Geo Washington. There’s the series I previously mentioned—Chase the Dream. It’s written and directed by J. Smoov.

It’ll be out this summer.

It’s our goal to start filming the 2nd episode of The Lost and Found SAGA: The Alexis Story, in the late summer. It’s written by Andrea Randle, and I portray Alexis.

In the fall, you will see the release of a book of poetry and short stories. It’s a collaboration with my mom and my children. I’ve also written some episodes of Him&Her. Those are shorts in which I indulge myself in the beauty of Black Love. Whew, chile!

Seeing it all together like this is giving me heart palpitations!

You’re never too old to go after that thing that speaks to your spirit, lights a fire in your soul, or sings to your heart. But don’t be so naïve as to think dreaming is enough.

As a Solopreneur, one of the most important things that I learned was how to properly market products and services so they could sell. I quickly began to fall in love with the concept of coming up with different ideas, taking pictures and brainstorming new ways to communicate to consumers through digital media like websites and graphics in order to get and keep their attention. brandneu.me was created as a way to fill a need that I saw as a new Entrepeneur. A lot of digital marketers spend their time selling services that seem to keep their clients dependent on them. My clients are like my students. In the process of us building websites, capturing content, creating graphics or brainstorming new marketing campaigns, they’re learning. I spend my time teaching them terminology, concepts and new techniques for generating traffic and hooking their target consumers.

Debra Brandon is the owner of brandneu.me, a marketing agency with the mission to help build brands that adapt to the digital market. Previously a project manager and process improvement specialist for corporate leaders, her interest has always been in helping businesses and brands to increase their chances of sustaining long term growth.

She also owns For the Culture a company that creates and hosts content that rebrands the perception we have on black culture.
