Andrew Sunley Smith, Overload Courtesy the artist and Fremantle Biennale, Western Australia

Fremantle Biennale: CROSSING 21 The ‘Fremantle Biennale’ is a festival of site-responsive contemporary art, which transforms the West Australian city into an immersive art gallery for two weeks every two years. The third iteration, titled ‘CROSSING 21’, on show from 5 to 21 November across multiple sites, explores Walyalup’s (Fremantle’s) intrinsic past and present relationship with the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River); tracing its shores from Walyalup to Dyoondalup (Point Walter) and through to the Derbarl Nara (Coogee Beach), with a focus of activity between the two iconic bridges. This is a place of alchemy where histories intersect and collide, where the bilya (river) meets the wardan (sea) in a place of confluence. When the world is experiencing health, social, economic, and environmental crises, ‘CROSSING 21’ looks to art as a form of connection. Eighteen artworks and performances respond to Fremantle’s built, natural and historic environment, each aiming to facilitate new conversations and share collective stories. Highlights include; Moombaki, a fleet of over 160 drones taking flight over water in an epic spectacle of light, movement and sound, to tell ancient and living stories of place by emerging Nyoongar artist Ilona McGuire & Elders. Andrew Sunley Smith’s Overload comprises a submerged, marooned vessel excessively loaded with local limestone rock spall, designed to symbolise commerce and export. And for Outside In, Amrita Hepi sets up an international hotline for messages and song requests for a loved one you are missing and haven’t seen due to the nature of confinement. A lone and lit podium will become the site for re-dancing the collected dedications in a continuous audio and performance work during the Biennale. fremantlebiennale.com.au 19

An enlightening read, exploring human civilisation’s environmental irrationalities, and suggesting an alternative path for future conservation of our fellow inhabitants, ‘Extinct’ warns: ‘There are 39 extinct Australian animal species in this book. There are 121 Australian animals currently considered critically endangered.’ Will we do the right thing?

FEATURED EXHIBITIONS

Claire Healy & Sean Cordeiro Post-haste By Victoria Hynes

As regular travellers, artistic duo Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro were all set to undertake a residency in Niigata, Japan, in 2020. Instead, like everyone affected by this modern-day pandemic, the year found them at home learning the Japanese art of kite painting. The pair contemplate the lessons learnt over the past two years in their latest exhibition, ‘Posthaste’, at the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery in Katoomba, New South Wales. Curated by Rilka Oakley, it showcases their artwork over the past ten years, addressing themes of technological obsolescence, global mobility, and the effects of mass consumption on the environment; and what happens when unseen forces arrest our desire for progress and speed.

Arts Victoria. I’ve had so many enriching experiences with primary school-aged children that have also fed into my works. I’ve been looking at many self-portrait works by artists like Lotte Laserstein, Artemisia Gentileschi, Maria Lassnig and reading the brilliant The Mirror and the Palette by Jennifer Higgie; and listening to lots of podcasts! It is challenging to plan for the year ahead with so many unknowns, but I’m hopeful that things will ease and start to open up. I’ll be moving from a city space to a more regional area and looking forward to seeing how the environment and space around me starts to slowly seep into my work. pip-ryan.com Images courtesy the artist

WHAT’S ON NEAR ME

Telling Tales

Glen Eira City Council Gallery 25 November to 19 December, 2021 Melbourne

‘Telling Tales’ explores the art of storytelling and a shared fascination with books and the literary world in contemporary art. The artists: Chris Bond, Penelope Davis, Prudence Flint, Nicholas Jones, Victoria Reichelt, Tai Snaith, Charlie Sofo and Deborah Walker play with a range of associations intrinsic to books – reading, knowledge, libraries, transformation, history, and personal and collective memory. The works span a range of mediums, including painting, book sculptures, photography, video, collage and altered books. Curated by Diane Soumilas.

Tom Moore Glassorama-BioDrama! Diorama all the ding-dong-day! Beaver Galleries 4 to 21 November, 2021 Australian Capital Territory

Tom Moore’s hybrid sculptures balance whimsy with profound questions about the exploitation of the environment. Combining plant and animal forms with mechanical elements, Moore’s creatures exist in an imagined future where the natural world has evolved to keep pace with human-induced climate change. Some have sprouted wheels, others extra eyes, to remain mobile and vigilant in a hostile world. Delightfully nonconformist, Moore uses 13th century Venetian glass techniques to tell his contemporary fables. He presents his glass sculptures in theatrical dioramas, inviting us deep into his futurist dreamscape.

Visitors are invited to contribute to the exhibition by considering and sharing their gallery experiences, thoughts and reflections on the walls of the gallery. Looking to the future, artist Kenny Pittock will use these responses as inspiration to create a new work as part of the opening exhibition at Dandenong’s new contemporary art gallery. As we prepare for the opening in early 2022, a new series of works will also be exhibited by artist Hung Lin documenting the development of the new facility, from the construction to the intricate details of the build. Through an installation of past exhibition posters, Past, Present and Future will also look back on some of the many wonderful exhibitions shown at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre.
