On the Cover

From the Editor This issue we jump around the country to bring you news, previews and exhibitions to add to your hit list. We kick off with our cover interview, Biennale of Sydney artist, Marco Chiandetti on his Mortuary Station aviaries. Still in Sydney Sara Sweet previews White Rabbit Gallery’s new ‘Heavy Artillery’ show, which includes He Xiangyu’s Tank Project and Library by Polit-Sheer-Form Office. Sweet also previews Fiona Hall’s Venice Biennale exhibition ‘Wrong Way Time’, now on at the National Gallery of Australia. While Melissa Pesa covers The Art Gallery of Western Australia’s ‘Comic Tragics: The Exploding Language of Contemporary Comic Art’, that gives an insight into the changing world of contemporary comic art and showcases nine of the world’s best comic artists. Annie Sebel and the Art Almanac team

On the Cover Marco Chiandetti The cover work, Sculpture for a Bird (African Grey Parrot) is by Marco Chiandetti, a London artist here for the 20th Biennale of Sydney (20BOS). While this earlier piece was a simple exercise in experimentation – “I made a series of sculptures that would work as bird perches. I was really just amusing myself to make sculpture for the sole purpose for a bird to sit on. Nothing more” – his work for the 20BOS’s Embassy of Transition is multi-layered. Working with birds again, he has created aviaries and sculptures for Myna birds to interact with – a commentary on transition, migration, life and death. 20th Biennale of Sydney Until 5 June, 2016 Sydney Sculpture for a Bird (African Grey Parrot), 2015, ceramic, African Grey Parrot, 12 x 12 x 23cm Photograph: Willem-Dirk du Toit Courtesy the artist and Biennale of Sydney

International Sculpture Day To celebrate International Sculpture Day on April 24, 2016, McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery will be open 11am-3pm and host exhibitions, free guided tours and workshops with exhibiting artists David Jensz and Jacqui Stockdale. Set over 16 hectares, there are 100 permanent outdoor sculptures that range from figurative to abstract, small to large, and represent the best Australian sculptors. Alongside the permanent works, visitors can see three exhibitions: ‘The McClelland Collection’; David Jensz: ‘Sculpture’; and Jacqui Stockdale: ‘Drawing the Labyrinth’. ‘The McClelland Collection’ features 18 key contemporary works from their permanent collection, featuring artists Rick Amor, Stephen Bush, Paul Davies, Richard Giblett, Cherry Hood, Rosemary Laing, Ron Mueck, Jim Paterson, 38

Patricia Piccinini, Alex Seton, Kate Spencer, Simon Terrill and others. David Jensz’s ‘Sculpture’ brings together six sculptures and two digital prints. He uses industrial plastic pipes, inflatable rubber tyre tubes to 44 gallon drums in inventive ways, weaving them together to give them new meaning. Jacqui Stockdale’s ‘Drawing the Labyrinth’ is more than one hundred metres of drawings in a fold-out concertina sketchbook of her 12-month journey across Europe where she sketched portraits of friends, family, self portraits, strangers and others. www.mcclellandgallery.com David Jensz, Rupture, 2013, steel drums, plastic pipe, 300 x 300 x 75cm Courtesy the artist © David Jensz and McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery, Melbourne

PUBLIC 2016 FORM’s PUBLIC Symposium returns in 2016 from April 1–17. The annual PUBLIC program is a celebration of urban art and ideas. PUBLIC 2016 presents Perth with a mix of events and ways to participate, as a Platform maker or creator, through outdoor murals, pop-up installations, temporary artworks, community gatherings, creative workshops and art exhibitions that spark new discoveries and ways to connect with friends and colleagues. The diverse program includes murals by leading international and Australian artists across Curtin University, a transformation of the Wheatbelt silos, the launch of Perth’s newest creative hub and community space the Goods Shed, and Western Australia’s first ever prototyping festival PUBLIC Platform (at Claremont on April 2 and 3), which will challenge creative of all kinds to design innovative ways to enliven their neighbourhoods.

A highlight of this year’s program, Executive Director, Lynda Dorrington says is the “PUBLIC Forum, a set of public conversations on April 2 and 8 about place and space with leading thinkers, doers and creators in those realms; including Deborah Cullinan, CEO of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in the USA, Takaharu Tezuka of Japan’s Tezuka Architects, and Mike Hornblow, Bruce Munro, Karim Jabbari and Alex Brewer.” PUBLIC 2016 April 1 to 17 Western Australia

Wrong Way Time by Sara Sweet

One of Australia’s most significant artists, Fiona Hall’s practice spans more than three decades. Hall was commissioned to be the first artist to represent Australia in the 56th Venice Biennale. Hall’s exhibition ‘Wrong Way Time’, curated by Linda Michael, was presented in the new Australian Pavilion building and has been seen by over 250,000 people so far. ‘Wrong Way Time’ has now made its way to the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), which is the only Australian venue to showcase the exhibition. The exhibition at the NGA will involve an additional room, which places Hall’s works in a broader historical context. This assortment of elements was curated by Deborah Hart, NGA Senior Curator, Australian Paintings and Sculpture post-1920. Hart explains that the additional works from the NGA collection will 44

provide a different viewer experience to the Venice exhibition, “...the story of this great Australian artist will be told in the spirit of ‘Wrong Way Time’ from her works of last year through to those of her early career.” The exhibition investigates global politics, world finances and the environment. Other areas of interest for Hall include post-colonial issues, the relationship between culture and nature and the human condition. Hart describes ‘Wrong Way Time’ as a “very dense exhibition” as it involves works made from an assortment of media including bread, banknotes, cork, aluminium and cuckoo clocks. These curious configurations speak deeply of Hall’s practice, which continues to transcend fluidly without restriction. Hart says that an instrumental aim is to “… convey the complexity of Hall’s intricate, multilayered art in ways that are accessible to a broad audience. A lot of thought has gone into the

display and the relationships between works from different timeframes.” Every object in the survey is an extension of Hall’s creativity, the pieces emulate the workings of her imagination.

2

Photographs produced in the 1970s and 1980s will feature in the exhibition together with other highlights including the Leaf litter installation (1999-2003) and the Paradisus Terrestris series (1989-90). Hall is known for her detailed aluminum tins which have been taken from their original form and transfigured into natural looking arrangements. As seen in Holdfast (Macrocystis angustifolia; giant kelp) (2007), part of the object emulates the natural and jagged textures of foliage, seen branching outwards, growing from the unraveling tin can. The text imprinted on the tin is a jarring reminder of the artificiality of the sculpture. There are also several recent works on loan from the artist that were shown in dOCUMENTA 13 (2012), Kassel, Germany. These relate to endangered birds and animals from around the world. Hall reflects on the troubled times that we are facing and this concern is ingrained in many of the pieces. ‘Wrong Way Time’ provides a detailed look into Hall’s influential role as an artist. Her creations are designed not to tell viewers what to think, rather they pose ideas surrounding the past, present and future. Hart says, “Fiona Hall has an amazing mind. She is also a great maker of objects. I believe viewers will be amazed at the range of works, the ingenuity of their making across a wide range of materials and the ideas they encompass.” National Gallery of Australia 22 April to 10 July, 2016 Canberra 1 All The King’s Men, 2014–15 (detail), knitted military uniform (Estonia), wire, dice, 127 x 63 x 35cm Photograph: Clayton Glen © Fiona Hall 2 Holdfast (Macrocystis angustifolia; giant kelp), 2007, aluminium fish tin, 25 x 16.3 x 2.5cm Photograph: Clayton Glen/Alessandra Bello Photography, © Fiona Hall

Snapshot Photography and Migrant Women: A Tasmanian Experience

Tim Jones Horace. The homely and the culinary

Post-war, thousands of migrant women from Britain and Europe arrived in Tasmania, and along with migrant men and children they were part of the largest number of free migrants to arrive in such a short period of time to the island state.

Tim Jones constructs a uniquely dreamlike yet comfortingly familiar world in his latest exhibition, ‘Horace. The homely and the culinary’, comprising of an installation of hand-carved sculptures and a series of works in bronze.

This exhibition will give Tasmanians the chance to hear the fascinating stories of these migrant women, told through their snapshots and their own voices retelling their experiences. Their stories show how they made sense of the experience of migration, and expressed feelings of longing and loss, hope and aspiration through their family photographs. The stories have been collected by Dr Nicolá Goc, Researcher at the University of Tasmania.

The imaginary character of Horace the Hare, a recognisable figure from Jones’ earlier woodblock prints has been realised for the first time in sculptural form. Jones masterfully carves into branches and logs to reveal domestic items such as houses, cutlery, vegetables and books, each varying in texture and finish, and all captivatingly tactile. Jones contemplates the cycles of life, themes of time, growth and nourishment, and referencing childhood memories.

Thomas Thorby-Lister (Skulk) Maler

Angela Cavalieri Canzone: music as storytelling

Thomas Thorby-Lister also known as Skulk created the feature paintings of this exhibition during a residency in Berlin in 2015, and is exhibiting them for the first time in Sydney.

Angela Cavalieri explores the art of writing in visual form. In her large-scale hand printed linocuts, literary, religious and historical narratives eventually manifest as image. Angela’s inspiration derives from her migrant family background and it is this intimate and personal connection that Angela uses to play with the ideas and architectures of language, storytelling and culture.

The pieces have inspired an exhibition of new works, concerned with abstracting Skulk’s signature style. The artist describes his work as a combination of personal graphic vocabulary of figures, objects and primitive shapes, with expressionistic mark-making and an abstract composition. This exhibition marks a change in direction and new artistic possibilities for the young artist’s progressive practice. ‘Canzone – music as storytelling’, is a culmination of Cavalieri’s five-year exploration of Monteverdi’s madrigals, developed during a recent residency at La Scuola Grafica Internationale in Venice, a Creative Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria and a previous commission from the Arts Centre Melbourne.
