On the Cover

From the Editor This issue has a strong Australian focus looking at artists who all interpret their surroundings and influences in their work in unique ways. Lucy Stranger previews two exhibitions this issue. Firstly, gracing the cover, The Art Gallery of Queensland’s ‘Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori’. Then to Victoria for the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s ‘Kevin Lincoln: The Eye’s Mind’, a survey of 140 of Lincoln’s restrained and contemplative works since 1990. Melissa Pesa previews the National Gallery of Victoria’s ‘Whistler’s Mother’, which exhibits Portrait of the Artist’s Mother, in Australia for the first time, alongside Australian artists connected to the painting. While Sara Sweet talks to printmaker, painter, sculptor and graphic artist G.W. Bot ahead of her latest exhibition at Australian Galleries, Sydney. Annie Sebel and the Art Almanac team

The painting shows one of the most important places on Bentinck Island where King Alfred was born. He was Gabori’s brother and a famous warrior and leader. The artists have said, “This place is special to all seven of us. We all have close connection to this country. Art News

Justin Art House Museum The Justin Art House Museum (JAHM) is an initiative of renowned Melbourne architect Charles Justin and his wife Leah – a house museum, designed to showcase their collection of over 240 works of contemporary art acquired over 20 years. “The collection has given us such pleasure over the years and we want to share that joy with other art lovers,” says Charles Justin. JAHM is a perfect hybrid of architecture, art and domesticity. Transformed by Elisa Justin of Justin Architects, the former apartment block in Prahran now wears a distinctive triangulated façade and boasts an impressive gallery on the second level, leading to the Justin’s personal quarters on the third level. Traverse between levels via the illuminating stairwell – 39 steps of interactive coloured lighting created by designer Ilan El. Alternatively, you can take the lift where a vibrant digitised photographic stripe composition encompasses a whole wall, making each ride an immersive experience. 36

The JAHM will host two exhibitions per year with viewings only available by pre-booked tours, personally guided by Charles and Leah. “After we have viewed the exhibition we invite people to then come upstairs into our home to see how we live with our collection. Over coffee and cake we hope to strike up many great conversations about the exhibitions and art in general,” explains Charles. JAHM’s inaugural exhibition ‘Divine Abstraction’ is currently on show, running until 19 June 2016. The exhibition features 18 works from some of Australia’s leading artists including Justin Andrews, Peter Daverington, Tim Maguire and Catherine Nelson. www.jahm.com.au Justin Art House Museum, exterior wall with integrated artwork by Tunni Kraus Photograph: Andrew Wuttke Courtesy Justin Art House Museum, Melbourne

Black White & Restive ‘Black White & Restive’ is part of an ongoing national conversation that surveys the cross-cultural engagements between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists over the past quarter century.

A symposium and illustrated catalogue will expand on the issues raised in the exhibition, contextualising the works historically and drawing on recent interviews with artists. Through diverse manifestations of cross-cultural practice, ‘Black White & Restive’ invites audiences to experience key moments in Australia’s evolving transcultural art history and wonder at its multiple futures.

Drawing significantly on Newcastle Art Gallery’s collection as well as loans from public and private collections, ‘Black White & Restive’ presents a selection of key works which contextualise cross-cultural currents in Australian contemporary art. The exhibition explores the diverse ways in which artists have challenged existing ways of thinking about identity and, in their restiveness wrestled with the ethical, political, historic and aesthetic dimensions of their practice. The narrative begins with the creative relationship established in the 1930s between Western Arrernte artist Albert Namatjira and Rex Battarbee, catalyst to the Hermannsburg School of watercolourists. Four decades later at nearby Papunya, the Western Desert or ‘dot painting’ revolution was ignited, forever changing the art world’s attitudes to Aboriginal art and establishing new paradigms for painters. The account continues with the revisiting of 1980s appropriations as well as highlighting large-scale collaborations and formal dialogues from the mid-1990s through to 2015. Other artists from the collection include Peter Adsett, Gordon Bennett, Robert Campbell Jnr, Tony Coleing, Tim Johnson, Ildiko Kovacs, Rusty Peters, Margaret Preston, Imants Tillers, Tony Tuckson and Tim Johnson.

Exhibition Previews Whistler’s Mother by Melissa Pesa

at the NGV in association with Art Exhibitions Australia, ‘Whistler’s Mother’ explores the complex work and its multiple perspectives.

The geometric austerity of James McNeill Whistler’s Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1: Portrait of the Artist’s Mother (1871) almost devolves its leading subject into abstraction. Yet, amongst the rectangular shapes and organic forms it is a woman’s stare, an enigmatic gaze that captures the viewer’s eye. In the composition the woman appears distant, locked in a moment of deep reflection that the viewer cannot penetrate. She personifies in this composition a reserved older woman: her gaunt profile austere, and accepting of her role as widow and mother – Whistler’s Mother.

Dr Isobel Crombie, exhibition curator and NGV Assistant Director, comments on the importance of ‘Whistler’s Mother’, “This focused exhibition takes viewers on a journey through the history of the work, uncovering the life and career of Whistler; the life of the sitter, Anna Whistler; the artwork’s volatile reception; its conservation story; the influences that informed its production; and, its until now unexplored Australian connections, before viewers encounter the painting in a dedicated room.” The exhibition presents associated material, including a survey of the many humorous parodies that have been made of the work. The exhibition puts the painting in context and includes material such as an edition of the etching Black Lion Wharf (1859), depicted in the background of the Whistler painting, and a Goodwin chair similar to the one Whistler’s mother sits on.

Considered to be one of the world’s most iconic paintings, Portrait of the Artist’s Mother, more affectionately known as Whistler’s Mother, has been unveiled at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in its Australian debut. On loan from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, and exhibited exclusively

Whistler’s innovative approach also influenced some of Australia’s most prominent artists including John Longstaff, Tom Roberts, E. Phillips Fox and Hugh Ramsay, whose works form part of the exhibition. Longstaff’s choice of subject matter in The young mother (1891), his use of Japanese motifs; and colour palette all point to the impact of Whistler’s painting on his work. With no clear narrative, Whistler’s Mother is primarily a study in composition. The painting represents the peak of Whistler’s almost Mondrian-esque method of modulating monochromatic tones and geometric arrangements. Influence from Velazquez, French realism and Japanese prints are clearly seen through his use of brushwork, technique, form and play with spectatorship.

44

Despite the overarching angularity of the painting in its entirety, from its unusual title, the unconventional seated pose and enigmatic stare, the figure remains dominant and the painting, overall, functions as a portrait.

2

Regarded as a potent symbol of motherhood, the atmospheric work depicts Whistler’s mother, Anna, sitting rigidly erect and in profile. Her black clothes insinuating that she is in mourning with her lace-cuffed hands clutching a white handkerchief. Anna’s pursed lips reveal her resigned and ultraconservative character, which over the years has earned her the reputation of a miserable grump; a contrast to her vibrantly dressed, socialite son. However, despite the dichotomy between the two, Whistler paints his mother with a sense of fragility. The soft, gentle brushstrokes forming her elderly skin symbolises the deep admiration Whistler felt for her. Standing in front of this large painting, hung in one of three interconnected rooms within the exhibition space, fixated on the mother’s gaze, the

viewer’s eye follows down Anna’s figure towards the left. Her dress falls outside the picture frame along with the subject of her gaze, where perhaps Whistler stands, looking up at his mother dearest. National Gallery of Victoria NGV International Until 19 June, 2016 Melbourne 1

Exhibition Briefs

FUSE Glass Prize

Open Field

The ‘FUSE Glass Prize’, a new biennial prize for Australian and New Zealand glass artists, is Australasia’s richest prize for glass. Showcasing 15 finalists, this prize aims to provide a platform to encourage artists who work in glass to push themselves and their work to new limits, and to focus significant public attention on the importance of glass as a medium for contemporary artistic expression.

To expand a Utopian vision, Kon Gouriotis curates a two-staged exhibition ‘Open Field’, placing original work by artists from Western Sydney in the Peacock Gallery, and a replica of each work within Auburn’s Botanic Gardens. This project considers original and replica objects, which evoke unexpected memories and connect a world of diverse cultures and histories from local to other places. Amongst the art, geometric forms, plants and animals will be the original 1960s Japanese garden postcards, which inspired the region’s first botanical gardens.

Featuring Clare Belfrage (SA), Mel Douglas (ACT), Tim Edwards (SA), Wendy Fairclough (SA), Brenden Scott French (SA), Elizabeth Kelly (NSW), Jessica Loughlin (SA), Nick Mount (SA), Richard Whiteley (NSW), Kathryn Wightman (NZ), Lewis Batchelar (SA), Hannah Gason (ACT), Marina Hanser (ACT), Andrew Plummer (NSW) and Alex Valero (SA). Hamish Campbell The Taisho Photographer’s House

façade Textile and Fibre Arts Exhibition

Hidden atop a hill, deep in a bamboo grove in northern Japan amongst the debris resulting from years of nature’s ingress, stands an abandoned home. Constructed during the Taisho era (19121926), the residence was occupied by several generations of one family until the late 70s or early 80s, among them a photographer.

This exhibition of textile and fibre artworks demonstrates the Australian Textile & Surface Design Association Inc.’s (ATASDA) stunning diversity within the textile art world. It showcases members’ artworks in the traditional and not so customary techniques, that may be combined with conventional materials and techniques like dyeing, felting, weaving, machine embroidery, surface embellishment, discharge, cloth construction, knitting, hand embroidery and printing.

Behind a rotting door, over 200 glass plate negatives were found offering a rare glimpse into the life of this photographer, his friends and family. The Head On Photo Festival exhibition showcases these images alongside those recently taken by artist Hamish Campbell of the same dwelling as it exists today, as well as images attempting to bridge the gap between these two eras.

ATASDA’s artists have created a range of utilitarian, decorative, wearable and meaningful two-dimensional and three-dimensional works. The Palm House 18 to 30 May, 2016 Sydney
