Ten years ago Sweet Louise was launched to support women and men with incurable breast cancer. Over the last decade thousands of New Zealanders have benefited from the wonderful care provided by Sweet Louise. In the early days, we were based only in Auckland, today we are national and remain the only charity in the country solely dedicated to helping those facing the devastating diagnosis of incurable breast cancer. None of this would have been possible were it not for the unprecedented success of an Art Auction, held in 2006. The proceeds from the auction launched Sweet Louise and allowed us to begin our mission in earnest. Now ten years later, we once again turned to the Arts Community to ask for their help to mark this significant anniversary and to raise funds for Sweet Louise. Our expectations have been surpassed and we are overwhelmed by the generosity, warmth and compassion shown by artists, gallerists and collectors. I deeply thank all who have contributed and made this possible. The works featured in this catalogue have been drawn together to convey the strength, compassion, and resilience that those faced with incurable breast cancer have to draw upon minute by minute. Funds raised through this auction will go directly to Sweet Louise members and help us to continue providing moments of relief, comfort and joy. I commend the Sweet Louise 10 Year Anniversary fundraising art auction to you all.

Since 2006 close to 2000 women and men living with incurable breast cancer have been helped by Sweet Louise. Ten years on, we remain the only charity in the country solely focused on incurable breast cancer. Much is known and written about primary breast cancer and it’s wonderful that so many women benefit from early diagnosis and treatment. But there is far less understanding and awareness of what happens when breast cancer recurs. The reality is that for 15-20% of women their breast cancer advances and their prognosis is dire. Their lives change instantly. The confusing – at times terrifying – challenges of tests, treatment, more doctors and side effects are one dimension. What to do about the bigger questions of one’s mortality and how that will impact family and friends is another. Sweet Louise was created to help. To help alongside great medicine, to be close, to be personal, listening and caring. A meal on the table for a family in need, a gardener, a builder a counsellor, a movie ticket or helping to fit a new prosthetic or just someone to talk to. Sweet Louise does not receive any government funding, instead we rely on wonderful New Zealand individuals, trusts, foundations and corporates to keep our services running. Events such as our 2016 Art Auction will help to provide: $30 – a cooked meal delivered to a member and their family $100 – a night at the movies for a member and their children $1000 – purchase a wig or mastectomy underwear $10,000 – transport for 20 members to get to and from hospital and hospice $60,000 – help 120 members for a whole year to access our support To those who have donated and volunteered over the years and to the Sweet Louise team – thank you.

LIVING LIFE IN LAYERS Stories from Sweet Louise
“We often think of life as a series of highs and lows. But for those among us living with incurable breast cancer it’s a journey with way more layers of complexity. This journey, and its many layers and moments are what the people at Sweet Louise understand and support”
