An Event of Unique Characteristics Member of the International Committee of Tourism Films Festivals - CIFFT The ART&TUR Film Festival is a member of CIFFT – International Committee of Tourism Film Festivals (organization based in Vienna, recognized by WTO for the touristic audio-visual sector), therefore, actively participating in a worldwide network festival. The prizes awarded by the jury of the ART&TUR festival, integrate the point system, used to decide the GRAND PRIX and Mentions in the Festival of the Festivals (Festival der Festivals), annually held by CIFFT in Vienna, in November.

One of the biggest tourism film festivals worldwide ART&TUR receives hundreds of films from several countries, as shown below : Number of submitted films Number of represented countries

2008 157 26

2009 168 38

2010 285 33

2011 287 39

In three years, ART&TUR became one of the biggest tourism film festivals worldwide, and one of the best, by the wide diversity of cultural events taking part simultaneously.

5

Wide range of film categories In the ART&TUR festival many types of movie compete: promotional, documentary, corporate and institutional films. The festival awards films related to the following categories:

In the current edition, the Festival will integrate the 3D Cathegory, which is a pioneer decision worldwide.

6

Great symbolic value: Barcelos Rooster - the tourism “Oscar” No other film festival in Portugal has its trophy such a known symbol as the Barcelos Rooster. Adopting the Barcelos rooster as the prize, the ART&TUR Festival gives universal meaning to the symbol (rooster) of a city and of a community (Barcelos) This way, the supreme symbol of the Portuguese tourism becomes linked to the cinematographic art, as a kind of “Tourism Oscar”. As such, a new symbolic synthesis is produced: association of the cultural heritage (figurative handicraft), to the cinema and art promotion. On the artistic level, a symbiosis is created between tradition (popular art) and innovation (cinematographic art).

7

A great community value The appreciation of the endogenous cultural resources of Barcelos goes beyond the symbolic appropriation of the Barcelos Rooster. In 2010, for example, dozens of artisans accepted to pose for the Polish photographer Andrzej Lojko, originating the exceptional exhibition “Traditional Arts and Crafts from Barcelos, a truly tribute anthem to the Barcelos people and to the simple persons that perpetuate their multi -secular culture.

In the present edition of the Festival, there are 20 craftsmen involved in the production of the trophies, in such a way that the prize for each tourism thematic category will be different. To the 20 different categories will correspond 20 different prizes!... As a consequence, during the Award Ceremony of the ART&TUR Festival 2011, taking place on September 30th, guests will have access to the fabulous richness of the figurative handicraft heritage of Barcelos, unique in the world.

8

Long term stability = sustainability In 2010, an agreement was signed between the Portuguese Tourismology Association (entity responsible for the organization of the festival) and the Municipality of Barcelos, guaranteeing the presence of the festival in the city of Barcelos during a period of 10 years. This long term contract constitutes a stability and sustainability factor, being a guarantee to the sponsors interested in associating to a qualified event.

Movie Cycle of Carlos Saura 26th, 28th and 29th of September Barcelos (Library and Municipality Auditorium) Nowadays Fado is one of the candidates to become Human Heritage and that is why ART&TUR Festival will pay homage to the Spanish director Carlos Saura, who gave a notorious increase of the knowledge of fado , in a worldwide scale. This Cycle is based on three movies that highlighted the musical culture of the following countries : Portugal (“Fados”); Spain (“Iberia”) and Argentina (“Tango”):

Tango (1998) - Musical: 117 minutes 26th September; at 21:30, Barcelos Library Storyline : Lonely after his wife (one of the film's stars) has left him, Mario must find the themes that will hold the film together, while simultaneously permitting his musicians and dancers the freedom of expression that is necessary to satisfy the tango-hungry Argentine audience. Things become complicated when Mario falls in love with Elena, a beautiful and talented young dancer who is the girlfriend of the powerful and dangerous Angelo Larroca, an investor in the picture. And Mario's creative vision is challenged by his investors when he plans a scene that recreates Argentina's dark years of political suppression and "disappearances".

Ibéria (2005) - Musical: 99 minutes 29th of September; at 21:30, Barcelos City Hall Storyline: Inspired in the work of Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz, who is a unique musician. The camera is one of characters of the story sharing preparations, rehearsals e the gradual creation of each performance. Iberia represents a celebration, and a breathtaking union between the passionate Flamenco, Classic, Ballet and Contemporaneous Dancing. The Cast is unbelievable : Sara Baras, António Canales, José Antonio Ruiz, Aida Gómez and Patrick De Bana. Among the musicians the consecrateds Manolo Sanlúcar, Gerardo Núñez and José Antonio Rodríguez; pianist Rosa Torres Pardo, flamenco-jazz stars Chano Domínguez and Jorge Pardo, the greatest singer alive Enrique Morente and his talented daughter Estrella Morente.

Cycle “Sylvio Back´s Cinema” ALELUIA, GRETCHEN (1976)

Storyline Saga of a German immigrant family that escapes from Nazism and settles down in a city in the South of Brazil, around 1937. Before and during World War II, members of the family get involved with the Fifth Column and the Integralism. In the 50’s, thanks to dangerous liaisons with the remnant of the War, the Kranz are visited by ex-officials of the SS, who come to South America. The plot extends until the present days.

Awards “Melhor diretor”: Sylvio Back (“Air France”); “Melhor diretor”: Sylvio Back (“Golfinho de Ouro”); “Melhor argumento”: Sylvio Back; (“Governador de São Paulo”); “Melhor roteiro”: Sylvio Back, Manoel Carlos Karam, Oscar Milton Volpini (Associação Paulista dos Críticos de Arte - APCA); “Melhor atriz”: Miriam Pires (“Air France”); “Melhor atriz”: Miriam Pires (“Coruja de Ouro”); “Melhor ator”: Sérgio Hingst (APCA); “Melhor fotografia”: José Medeiros; (“Coruja de Ouro”); Melhor fotografia: José Medeiros; (Festival de Gramado); “Melhor fotografia”: José Medeiros (“Governador de São Paulo”); “Melhor figurino”: Luis Afonso Burigo; (“Coruja de Ouro”); “Melhor cenografia”: Ronaldo Leão Rego/Marcos Carrilho (APCA); “Melhor cenografia”: Ronaldo Leão Rego/Marcos Carrilho (“Governador de São Paulo”); “Melhor ator coadjuvante”: José Maria Santos (Festival de Gramado); Prêmio Qualidade da Embrafilme; Seleção oficial XXV Festival de Berlim (Al. Ocidental)/1976

34

RÁDIO AURIVERDE (1991)

Storyline With unpublished images and sounds of Carmen Miranda and of Brazil during World War II, the movie enters the unknown universe of the psychological war that hindered the presence of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) in Italy (1944-1945). Using a clandestine radio cheerful and mocking musical broadcastings, a taboo-theme among the troops, the movie also reveals the tragicomic relations between Brazil and the US during the conflict, whose consequences have never ended. Critics More than a movie about the FEB, "Radio Brazil" is a film about the Brazilian image during a highly exposed episode. Cruel, pamphleteer, an inconvenient corollary of a movie that was not born to please nor to court. – Carlos Alberto de Mattos (in "Sylvio Back – Movies on the other Margin"/1992). … the notion that maybe moves all Back’s cinematography, the desire to break the ingenuity and the festivity of certain moments under a historical point of view. An intent that has cost him one of the most uncompromising debates of the recent national cinema, in the "Radio Brazil" enterprise, a criticized vision of the role of the Brazilian troops in World War II. – Orlando Margarido ("Gazeta Mercantil"/2001).

35

YNDIO DO BRASIL (1995)

Storyline A collage of dozens of national and foreign films – fiction, news movies and documentaries – revealing how the movies see and listen to the Brazilian Indian since he was first shot in 1912. They are surprising images, framed by thematic music and poems that take the spectator to an idyllic and prejudiced, religious and militarized, cruel and magic universe of our Indians.

Awards “Melhor documentário de longa-metragem” (XXII Jornada Internacional de Cinema da Bahia/1995); “Melhor Documentário em Língua Portuguesa e Castelhana” (XXVI Festival de Figueira da Foz (Portugal)/1996); Prêmio Especial do Júri (Fest Cine (Florianópolis -SC)/1997). Critics The most well succeeded of Sylvio Back’s movies. – Hugo Sukman ("Jornal do Brasil”/995). Back likes to take off the ideological varnish from the established truths, exposing the backstage of the official facades. (…) In the mounting, Back manages to show that after Marshall Rondon, all approximation with the Brazilian Indians was made using a militarizing pedagogical project. – Luiz Carlos Merten ("O Estado de S. Paulo"/1997).

36

CRUZ E SOUSA - O POETA DO DESTERRO (1999)

Storyline Biography of the Brazilian poet João da Cruz e Souza (1861-1898), son of slaves, the founder of Symbolism in Brazil, considered the biggest black poet of the Portuguese language. By 34 "visual stanzas", the film goes from the poet’s breathtaking passions in Florianopolis (SC) until his social, racial and intellectual cornering, and his tragic end in Rio de Ja neiro. Critics

It is, so to speak, your best film ever, one of the most beautiful of the recent Brazilian cinema. – Luiz Carlos Merten ("O Estado de S. Paulo"/2001). Its speeches, theatrical, poetical and cinematographic at the same time, enrapture the public. Back uses the movies as a pretext to demonstrate the ability in metamorphose itself in several different supports. It is an aggressive movie by its lyricism that strikes with its poetry. – Alécio Cunha ("Hoje em Dia"/2001) I think it is an admirable film. – Alexei Bueno ("Jornal do Brasil"/2001).

37

LOST ZWEIG (2003)

Storyline The last week of the life of the Austrian-Jewish writer Stefan Zweig, author of "Brazil, the Country of the Future" and his young wife, Lotte, who, in a pact surrounded by mystery, commit suicide in Petropolis, nearby Rio de Janeiro, after Carnival in 1942, which they watched together. A gesture that still today, 60 years later, raises doubts and awe by its premeditation and emblematic character. Awards “Melhor Atriz” (Ruth Rieser); “Melhor Roteiro” (Sylvio Back e Nicholas O´Neill) “Melhor Direção de Arte” (Bárbara Quadros) (36º Festival de Brasília/2003); “Melhor Fotografia” ((11º. Festival de Cinema de Cuiabá/2004); Seleção official (XXII Festival Cinematográfico Internacional Del Uruguay/2004); Prêmios “Melhor Filme”, “Melhor Diretor” (Sylvio Back); “Melhor Fotografia” (Antonio Luiz Mendes); “Melhor Trilha Sonora” (Raul de Souza e Guilherme Vergueiro) (14º. Cine-Ceará/2004). Critics Remarkable by the quality of the staging in its various aspects – in photography, sound track, interpretation, scenarios and costumes – the recreation directed by Sylvio Back concentrates on the last days of Zweig’s life. – Sérgio Rizzo ("História Viva"/2004).

History, for Sylvio Back, is not a well-educated lady to whom we owe respect. It is, all the same, a slut always open to free dramatization and metaphorical licenses. His party is the doubt, the questioning of certainties. So he did with the Jesuit missions ("The Guarani Republic"), the Paraguayan War ("The Brazilian War"), the part of Brazil in World War II ("Radio Brazil"). The same happens with Stefan Zweig’s "Brazilian life", which he depicts in the compassed and solemn rhythm of a requiem. – Carlos Alberto de Mattos ("O Globo"/2007). 38
