Stars & Signs
Growing up from an early age in the family sign making business was the ultimate privilege, surrounded by signs, paint and master sign writers. Though never formerly trained as a sign writer my forte was discovered very early on, working after school producing the majority of our business’s pictorials, many award winners. These days my still life works are very much drawn from this era, utilizing much of the imagery I worked with, Coca Cola, Lanes Thompson etc. We literally screen-printed thousands of Coke posters through the eighties and produced numerous pictorials!
The goal with all my still life works is to imbue the subject with life, I paint the subject almost as a product employing the time-consuming technique of crosshatching to achieve the desired result. ‘Wonderland’ is something of a new direction, both in technique and subject matter, conscious of time and the need to paint larger paintings I’ve chosen to employ a more painterly style. Like a breath of fresh air wonderland girl stepped into my studio with beauty, grace and all the optimism of youth! The perfect picture! - Geoff Williams
As an artist, Geoff Williams is motivated by the pure pleasure and the constant challenges of painting. By offering an alternative presentation of the recognisable he intends to provoke an emotional response. For Williams, the success of a painting depends not so much on the subject, but on how the viewer relates to it. With this in mind, he tends to choose familiar, everyday subjects. His images become constructions of a moment passed, rather than fleeting snapshots. He paints what he knows and the end product, while autobiographical, is also the stuff of collaborative experience.
