The Style Issue has left us wondering how fast things are changing in today’s world. One minute we are at Caffe Abracci in Coral Gables, Miami, doing a photo shoot with power players, the next we are on a flight to New York City to scout locations for the luxury brand Brahmin to do our own shoot of these beautifully crafted pieces of art. Art surrounds us, be it at a suite in a five star hotel, a real estate showroom like One Sotheby’s new project 1000 Museum, or discussing the fine cuisine of a dedicated chef who considers his food creations of art.

Some of these superbly talented individuals showcase their passion and generosity through their art, while making it accessible for the rest of us enjoy and admire. Another great experience has been dealing with Dineen Garcia, a successful executive at Macy’s, who is helping us launch our next chapter of Art Bodega Magazine in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We also enjoyed the photo shoot with Papi Underwear CEO, Alan Zelcer, Cubavera’s marketing director Luis Toro, and Cenia, a designer from New

In this issue we also feature profiles of some of the most stylish individuals in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. Among them are some of the power players in Luxury Real Estate and the world of Fashion, and what characterizes them is a sense of style and impeccable attention to detail that certainly help make the world a better, polished and more fashionable place! Because Life is Art!

Thanks to them we were able to secure the best hotels on the island; the Waterclub Hotel and El Convento, to celebrate this summer’s VIP parties under the San Juan tropical breeze. Our beauty section was carefully crafted and covered by our Beauty Editor and international beauty expert Pia-Maria Norris, and includes some of the best products and tips for your skin in order to get and keep that youthful look and glow that women of all ages crave.

ALAN ZELCER A resident of Bal Harbour, Alan Zelcer is not your typical entrepreneur. He carries his iPad while listening to Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy” at the Soho House Club in Miami Beach. As he says hello during his photo shoot at the private club’s trendy library, you can tell he’s had a good day. Zelder chats the crowd with sure confidence as he enthralls you in his intrepid and adventurous world. His underwear line “Papi” is unusual too. A brand that emerged from the creative and business skills he developed as a child through the family legacy, has evolved into a jaggernaut of clothing lines for men. It includes ties, socks, underwear, and competes with the highest fashion brands such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. He also manufactures the underwear label for Perry Ellis, a global enterprise that best defines men and women’s clothes. “We started the business in the 80’s and evolved in the 90’s. What happened back then was that times had changed. People were wearing more casual clothes. When Macy’s renovated the store in Miami Beach, the department store introduced us to the masses, and immediately we sold half the merchandise. The CEO of the company reacted in amazement to this and ordered the Papi brand to other stores, and it was the same phenomenon”, says the owner and CEO of Papi Underwear. Hailing from Cuba, his father was involved in the business of ties. He traveled to Cuomo in Italy, at the age of 14 and learned the craft. “I remember the old mills and all these workers, carefully selecting the textile. That was the beginning of learning this business. When I bought the brand of Papi Underwear, we re launched it and started anew”, declared the Miami based entrepreneur. The studios are located in Miami. The company has 350 employees and Zelcer is the CEO of Isaco International, manufacturing for Perry Ellis and its

own brand Papi, which earned lofty success recently by adding Bloomingdale’s to its retail catalog, joining the ranks of long time partners Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Dillard’s. The company also recently launched a new brand, Rico. His wife Ruth, VP of Merchandising at Isaco, is an integral part of Zelcer’s success. The couple has three children. “For us Macy’s is a focal point. It’s been a great partner for many years. We particularly like the areas where they sell. When we started with Burdine’s, the distribution of the department store was not as centralized. Macy’s owned it and made the decision to reorganize its store, centralizing the distribution, all under one name, Macy’s.” As Zelcer enjoys the serenity of the ocean, his social agenda is pretty packed at all times. He and his wife Ruth are celebrities in the fashion world of Miami. At the Soho Beach House they are treated like royalty, and Zelcer knows the who’s who of the glitterati. NBA stars, hedge funders, fashionistas, and many more embrace him like if he was part of their family. Always suave and relaxed, his underwear line is emblematic of his style. The Papi guy truly personifies comfort and sophistication. For Selzer, Papi is expressive, athletic, and body conscious. The Papi guy expresses his sexuality freely and confidently, through colorful designs and sexy silhouettes. “We are involved with the community. That makes an integral part of who we are. We help such charitable foundations as the Miami Jewish Federation, Mt. Sinai Hospital Founders, MTV Staying Alive, The Broward House and Style Saves among others. We are passionate about our community, as we are about our great designs”, concludes Zelcer.

LUIS TORO Tropical charm defines Cubavera

A guayabera is a symbol of Latino culture that incorporates comfort, elegance and good taste. Paired with a Cuban cigar and a Panama hat, when you see a gentleman dressed with this shirt, you feel as if you are in a movie set resembling the Old Habana of the 50’s. To George Feldenkreis, Chairman and CEO of Perry Ellis International, this Cuban nostalgia never ceases to exist. The brand Cubavera, born from Feldenkreis’ ideology from his Cuban roots, has seen a steady growth since 2000. His marketing director, Luis Toro, who hails from Colombia, is bringing a new take to the company through his sophisticated but fun taste and approach to the brand. “We make our catalogues alive. Everything that we do relates to the feel and look of the brand. Our interna-

tional influence taken from our trips to Latin America inspire our style. It can be from a tropical flower, to birds of great beauty. The print and embroidery exemplifies the careful craftsmanship we apply to our products”, says the young man who recreates and cements the Perry Ellis brand. Guayaberas originated in Cuba over 200 years ago. Spaniard immigrants in the island designed the loose, smock like shirt in the early 1800s. Farmers who sold their fruits near the Spanish colony city of Trinidad wore the first versions of guayaberas. Locals called these vendors “guayaberas”, a reference to the tart indigenous fruit guayaba (“guava”) that provided their sole source of income. There is some debate as to whether the shirt originated in Mexico or perhaps the Phillipines, but this only adds to the far-reaching popularity and status as

a cultural icon. Feldenkresis, also known as “El Rey de las Guayaberas” (The Guayabera King), first manufactured them in 1967 under the label Romani. With the explosion of the Latin market, the company decided to go back to its origins and address this untapped niche market by launching Cubavera in 2000. The brand has grown steadily ever since. “We try to progress with the new generations, always keeping the original feeling, but with a new interpretation, more oriented to all Latin Americans. The beauty of our clothes is shown in these designs sold in El Salvador, Mexico, Panama and the United States. We are in 220 Macy’s stores and we also sell independently. Cubavera is a unique brand since its inception in the United States”, says Toro. SUMMER | ART BODEGA | 9

REAL ESTATE

Style and good taste in the luxury real estate business The world of developers in Miami consists of long hours of planning detailed conceptual projects that emerge as people’s homes. In Don Peebles’ case, developing high-end projects is a day-to-day operation combined with good taste and a passion for his longstanding careers as one of the foremost real estate experts in the nation. Peebles was named by Forbes as one of the wealthiest African-Americans in the United States. That distinction sets him as an example of the successful enterprise he achieved through the years, thanks to determination, endurance, and a keen vision to develop unique projects beyond his comfort zone. “I spent three days of the week in New York City. It is very productive and it makes me a much better developer. It is a challenge, but you can’t be a tourist and live the experience to become an expert. You have to live and interact with what surrounds you. That is part of our success at the Peebles Corporation”, says Peebles at his beautifully decorated office in Coral Gables. The walls are filled with art, all curated and carefully selected by his wife Katrina Peebles, another stylish woman in the art world. His successful foray in New York consisted of importing a Miami lifestyle that is so luxurious with the enormity of the Big Apple. His new project will be in Tribeca. “Why not develop in New York? Many New Yorkers are coming down to Miami to develop projects. I want to do the same, and bring to New York the luxury that represents our city, more space, more freedom for New Yorkers to live the experience of a high-end condo”, says the owner of the Bath Club Estates, a very luxurious building located in Miami Beach. His driven mentality arose from a hard working family who raised him in Washington D.C. “My family taught me how to achieve things in life. They taught me that hard work would reap the benefits in life. My mother was a very hard working woman. My mission is to support minorities 30 | SUMMER | ART BODEGA

and women to become developers through a new venture capital company that will fund these individuals”. For Peebles, Miami is ideal for buyers because of the weather, its favorable tax treatment and its ideal location. “Two and half hours to New York City. Very convenient.” The company business has grown significantly to other cities though, including Las Vegas and San Francisco. “Our company focuses in product diversification. We do office buildings, condos, hotels, we commit to the market we are building in. When we build in a particular city, we use local talent. We hire the best in interior designing, we become part of the community.” His involvement with the arts is very prominent.

“I’m not a buyer of trophy art. I’m a buyer of emerging artists and I buy based on what touches me as good art. The whole idea for me is to enjoy the experience. The same happens with our buildings,” says the now resident of Coral Gables and great collector of art. He helped launch the career of another Miami resident, Romero Britto. For now, the legacy of Peebles will always be cherished as one of the top visionaries in the country when it comes to art, good taste, and real estate.

RALPH PATINO A trial lawyer with style

He has a style that stands out amongst the crowd. Miami area personal injury attorney Ralph G. Patino founded Patino & Associates in 1992, since then, his social preeminence has stood out in the city of Miami, making him a power player thanks to his involvement in fundraising for major political candidates. He was crucial in helping the US President Obama get reelected in 2012.

Wilderness tires after proven defective and causing catastrophic injuries and deaths, put him in the map as one of the top 25 legal firms in South Florida. He has also been nationally recognized once again for his work dealing with the responsibility of banks to their customers for online banking fraud, while been credited with the landing of the first landmark case in the nation dealing with On-line Banking Losses.

A nationally recognized trial lawyer who concentrates his practice in products liability, automotive negligence, premises liability, police misconduct and banking fraud has proven to be a big defender for the American public. His case involving the recall of over 6.5 million Firestone ATX

His involvement in politics generates the interest of both political parties since the inception of his non-profit, ACT, “Americano Como Tu” (“American Like You”) which focuses on farm worker rights and immigration reform.

EDGARDO DEFORTUNA A game changer in development BY REBECA HERRERO

Miami has seen a foray of great development projects emerged in the last years. One of them is symbolic of good fortune and style, the Jade Signature, a new building designed by the Swiss firm Herzog De Meuron and developed by Fortune Development in South Florida. Imbued with class and elegance, the building located in Sunny Isles will represent another big accomplishment by the real estate mogul Edgardo Defortuna.

the company puts in time and quality.

Born and raised in Argentina, Defortuna arrived in Miami 30 years ago. “I came because my sister wanted to study her specialization in medicine here. I was supposed to come for three months to keep her company. I fell in love with the city and here I am. My parents ….still waiting for me in Argentina”, he says from his office in Brickell. The Jade Signature project has sold over 300 million dollars. It is a recognizable signature project that emerges thanks to the careful dedication

For Defortuna, his family is everything. His wife Cristina is very much involved in the company. “She helps me in this. She understands me perfectly, we have a compatibility and understanding that helps me in all our progress”, says the Key Biscayne resident. From their home, Edgardo and Cristina organize parties and family oriented events with their employees. They know the secret to their success is encouraging team work

“We carefully select our projects. From the sales side we have learned what the buyer wants. Our company is unique in that it has different branches, one that is Fortune International Realty which serves as a brockerage firm. We also have Fortune Development and Sales and Fortune Development which concentrates into developing new buildings only”, admits the father of three boys.

with all the staff members who belong to the Fortune Realty umbrella. “At home we have hired a great designer who has worked at prestigious hotels around the world, the Four Seasons and the Savoy Hotel in Paris.” The family also travels abroad constantly. “We have developed a strong bond with some of our clients. We end up being friends, we get close to them because of the nature of the service we provide”. The international approach is what has made this real estate company sell to prospective buyers that love Miami. “When we build a project we take into consideration what the clients’ needs are. We also dedicate a great deal of our time in the details that entail the pre-design and completion of the project”, concludes the real estate mogul, with a feeling that the Fortune name will continue to expand into uncharted territories.

caffe ABBRACCI Nino Pernetti celebrates his restaurant’s legacy By Rosana M. Pérez

As you enter the popular bar at Caffe Abbracci, you embark on a journey that leads to friendship and delight. The waiter, elegantly attired, welcomes you and guides you to your table. You place your order and then look about to take in the atmosphere and to observe the other clientele. A glance around the room, you notice the warm glow in the bar and the stained glass ceiling above it, both of which emphasize the charm and glamour of the 90’s without appearing at all dated. It is a comfortable place where singles, couples and families alike will be at ease. With a second glance you may be happy to find Abbracci’s omnipresent owner, Nino Pernetti, at another of the cozy tables nearby chatting affably with other customers, most of whom he seems to know and all of whom wish to be known by him. An evening at Abbracci is both marvelous and unique experience. Having absorbed a lifestyle of glamour and upscale dining around the world, hosting dignitaries and celebrities, some of whom became longtime friends, he embarked on a new journey which resulted, happily, with his successful signature restaurant.

Summer is here, and most of us are looking forward to some vacation time. However, high summer temperatures and increased sun exposure also comes with additional demands on our skincare regime. In order to maintain a healthy and youthful skin, it is crucial to wear an effective sunscreen to prevent sunburns, skin damage and skin aging. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a water resistant broad-spectrum sunscreen that offer SPF 30 or higher, not only when you are directly exposed to the sun but also throughout the day. Here are some of our favorite sunscreens and tips on how to keep your skin protected and healthy during the summer months. (Page 44)

DAILY CARE

While UBV rays (that cause sunburn) are strongest in summer, UVA rays (that cause wrinkles) remain constant throughout the year. So make sure to protect your face on a daily basis, regardless of season and weather.

PIERO LISSONI

We invite you to discover your very own South Florida destination with ONE Sotheby’s International Realty.

MAKES HIS U.S. DEBUT

The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach, will be comprised of 111 residences and 15 private single family villas, exclusively designed by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni. The residential development is Piero’s first full-scale architectural work in the US. Piero specializes in modern Italian, but his specialty is creating a sense of warmth, humanity and surprise through unexpected detail or imperfections. The Italian part of his artistry focuses on purism, and the humanist side always has to add that bit of personality or imperfection that indicates that life happens in this space rather than vice versa. “A space cannot define life. Life defines the space and life means your culture, your soul, your noise, your silence. Anything else is based on formulas and is totally impersonal – a direction I avoid.”, said Piero. His expresses his philosophy in the way he dresses as well; he likes to have his pants too short as he likes to have a tiny bit of imperfection to his overall cultivated look. Piero is also developing three major residential projects- The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach, Penthouses at AKA Times Square, and Oceana Bal Harbour in Miami – as well as working on specialty designs for Boffi, Nespresso and other consumer brands.

NADIA DESJARDINS Giancarlo Ciavaldini is one of the most respected photographers in Miami. His passion for excellent photo works is a reflection of his extensive worldwide traveling. This has earned him a following in the palette of adventure and fine arts photography. His inclination for this medium started a few years ago while exploring with painting. Ciavaldini knew he needed better photographs for the painting process. Soon after, his love transformed behind the lens, attaining great success in composition and lighting.

tally unknown to me. I am not a photographer but a painter and the camera is my brush. I have a curious mind that never stops wandering; and this constant process of breaking apart and recreating everything, has taken me in a journey looking to discover and experience everything real and unreal”, says the Venezuelan-born, Brickell-resident artist.

A native of Switzerland, Nadia Desjardins completed her studies in Ceramics at the École des Arts Apliqués in Vevey. Besides her studio work, she spent many years teaching art to the mentally handicapped, seniors and elementary school students. Over the years she has participated in group and solo exhibitions, including the production of a series of pre-columbian style pieces for a show entitled “Brazul” which featured for several months at the Musée Romain de Lausanne-Vidy. Since 2011 she has lived and worked in South Florida. In December of 2012 she debuted her

first solo exhibition in the United States at ArtSouth in Homestead. Her work spans many styles and traditions, from the figurative to the abstract. A lifelong fan of comics and graphic novels, her figurative work often displays an engaging sense of humor coupled with a keen sense of polish and technique. Nadia’s creative energy and curiosity have often led her to explore other mediums, including working with different painting mediums as well as glass and plaster.

“Until now this was only part of my imagination but photography has given me a window to another dimension where space and time became variables full of emotions “At the beginning of my photo- only revealed to the camera eye graphic career, light, exposure, and saved for posterity in a frozen and even focus were concepts to- shot”, concludes the lens man.

JEANETTE PRENGER in a new york state of style

What makes New York a great destination?

I love New York. I love the history, the people and the city! There is always so much to do. I have clients in Manhattan and there is never a shortage of places to go to conduct meetings. And it is very easy to get around. Even when traffic is bad, you have options. I love using the subway but like it better when I can walk to my destination.

You hail from Kansas City but you are very active in the New York social scene. Tell me a little about it... I’ve had the privilege of meeting some amazing people who live in Manhattan. When I come to town we go out – sometimes to a club, always a great restaurant and of course, I support and attend fundraisers. I belong to a board headquartered in New York, the Orphaned Starfish Foundation and try to be in town for board meetings. I currently sit on the Kansas City Repertory Theatre board and attend plays in New York with other board members. And I never pass up an opportunity to shop, buy from unique boutiques and browse the art galleries and museums.

Favorite fashion designer?

Diane Von Furstenberg. I love the shoes, handbags and clothes. Fits me and my style. Great styles and I always feel great – whether its work or play.

Favorite Store in New York City? Saks Fifth Avenue

Favorite Charity?

Orphaned Starfish Foundation. We provide technology in orphanages, mainly in Spanish speaking countries.

When you go to New York, tell me your routine, where do you like to stay, shop, go out...

I love the Intercontinentals, Ws and Loew’s. All have wonderful customer service and the rooms are nice. I base my choices on whether I am looking for someplace close to my meetings, if I want luxury or if I need points since I participate in their loyalty programs. I try to squeeze in a workout at SoulCycle. I teach spin classes and I’m inspired by the energy, music and instructors. I also get a preview of fashion trends. I started drinking wheatgrass before anyone in Kansas knew that it was as good for us as our cows!

Any other comments, plans to expand your company here, and why do you come to this town.

I have friends and clients in Manhattan. Because of my business affiliation, I am lucky enough to get to the Big Apple on a regular basis. I love the diversity, the crowds and stimulation that the city provides. I thrive on the energy and I find New Yorkers to be so real- fun, kind and yes, to the point. I think they are misunderstood as not being friendly because they tend to be in a hurry, but I have yet to have a bad experience with anyone I’ve met there. I’ve been the ‘stupid tourist’ and yet have had New Yorkers take the time to point me in the right direction. I love New York!

My best scouting strategy is high quality and excellent work and the powerful results my clients get! I receive requests from clients around the world, and fit them in my schedule according to urgency and geographical area. The results from my work is my best resume. The good energy around people makes them thrilled to share their happiness with their friends and family, and is the strength of my business. I serve a lot of important and high profile clients throughout the world, however my mission is to enrich lives and every day and my doors are open to everybody who wants to transform their space to improve their lives.

I love L’Osteria, in Condado. ...authentic Italian cuisine by Chef Crostelli from Italy! They do not have a menu...the daily menu is written in chalkboard and is always amazing with the freshest ingredients. The restaurant has also been Feng Shuied, so it has a great ambience!

cafe DEMETRIO BY GUILLERMO CUETO

Enter Café Demetrio and you will be immersed in the friendly warmth of its classic ambiance, the captivating aroma of its enticing coffee, and its appetizing variety of food. Defined by the Media as “A Sophisticated, Upscale Gathering Place”, Café Demetrio is indeed a well known gathering venue for entrepreneurs, policy makers, philanthropists, federal, state and local authorities, journalists, educators, and professional practitioners engaged in the financial, legal, health, and science and technology areas, as well as in an eclectic array of additional endeavors. Demetrio Pina, an electrical engineer, and his wife Vilma, had the vision and the drive, 17 years ago, of creating the Café, whose building is more than a unique architectural jewel…It is one of the very few Mediterranean Style business premises in Coral Gables, with a genuine original Mediterranean Style Structure, inspired by the 1700-1800 Italian, Spanish and French designs. It includes an ample open Patio where the customers enjoy dining, caressed by a sustained breeze and the lushness of tall banyan trees. Café Demetrio is a place where people go to fulfill their basic social needs: enjoyment; relaxation; casual conversations; meeting people and friends…A place where a casual encounter may become a last-

ing relationship, and where an insightful dialogue could result in the enhancement of applicable knowledge” proclaims Demetrio… Likewise, since its early days, and following its European character, Café Demetrio has been the gathering site for devoted chess players, literary forums, classical, contemporary and soft jazz performances and a myriad of other events, including the wedding of couples who met, enamored, and united in sacrament at the patio, surrounded by relatives and the long-time Café friends. Located in the heart of “The City Beautiful” Coral Gables, minutes away from Miami International Airport, Port-Miami, Miami Beach, and within walking distance and short ride to the most prestigious hotels, Café Demetrio is in the midst and natural path of domestic and international visitors, who frequent the officially declared “historic building” tendering style, comfort and nourishment of body, mind and spirit to those who join in. Café Demetrio is graciously and rightfully considered a “Center of Arts and Culture”, as well as a “think tank”, where formal and informal literary, musical and other various intellectual events take place, and during which the harmonious discernment of ideas flow freely, thus enriching cognition, values, and hearts.

Café Demetrio is conveniently located at 300 Alhambra Circle, Coral Gables, Florida 33134 - p: 305-448-4949 - f: 305-448-4173. The Café opens Mon-Thurs 7:30 am - 6:00 pm; Friday 7:30 am - Midnight; Sat 10:30 am - 5:00 pm
