eeridge Farm is one of those places where you want to remain for hours, looking at the beautiful landscape, the horses that roam the property and dream forever. In this edition we had the great pleasure to share a wonderful day with a family that represents the best of America, the Jacobs. Not only have Delaware North (the company started by the family), represented an empire that is the American Dream, it is a great example for future generations of hard working individuals to start a business and grow it with passion. For the first time in Wellington, through the legacy of Jeremy Jacobs, the family is establishing new grounds for the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League.

The ones in charge now are the children, Charlie, Katie, and Lou Jacobs who posed for the cameras during a sunny day, laughing, enjoying walks with Lou’s german shepherd, accompanied always by

the caring watch of their beloved mother, Peggy Jacobs, the lady who built the foundation for Deeridge Farm. A passionate nature photographer, the family album sitting on the table of the Club House they own represents all that is this family: value for good business, great legacy, class and love for nature.

E2 SHOW JUMPERS FIND A HOME IN WINTER EQUESTRIAN CAPITAL OF THE WORLD Michael Meller Talks Passion, Partnership and Professionalism with New Show Jumping Business. By Rebeca Herrero Competing at the highest level of show jumping takes a truly great horse. But how do you find that horse? How do you produce a winner? This is the goal of Wellington, Florida-based show jumping business, E2 Show Jumpers. Identifying young, talented horses and helping them achieve their utmost potential so they can one day go on to compete at the international level of the sport is their primary objective. E2 Show Jumpers’ new facility, Mei Lun, is perfectly situated among a serene setting in the glamorous Grand Prix Village and within walking distance of the elite Winter Equestrian Festival showgrounds. Although they may be the newcomers in town, E2 Show Jumpers is prepared to take on the best of the best in the equestrian world this season.

Michael Meller helps run the facility and business along with partners Katherine Gallagher and Dan Walsh, as well as professional riders Stacey Babes and Peter Lutz.

Their passion for the horses and the sport is visible in their management regimen, and their high standard of professionalism in everything they do keeps them at the

top level of the worldwide sport.

“We strike to be exclusive, but also the best,” said Meller, whose long career in the sport has given him a keen insight into what it takes to be successful. “Yes we are a business, but we are selective when it comes to our horses. We buy young horses to train them, and later develop them into winners. Our riders are world-class champions who have won many international competitions. Our goal is not to just capitalize on a horse, it is more about the passion of the equestrian sport and the tenacity it takes to respect them and cherish them in the sport and the equestrian lifestyle.”

As you walk into Mei Lun, the perfectly coiffed landscape of the stable offers great grounds for horses and riders. Here, the team wakes up early in the morning to train and prepare for upcoming competitions. Although many try to compete at the highest levels of the sport, Meller affirms that only a rider that is passionate about the horse will be successful.

“Our partners are riders from Ireland and Great Britain,” said Meller.

they were very young; it came naturally through their upbringing, where horses have always been a part of their life.”

As you approach the facility, grand entrance gates welcome and lead you to a luxurious stable with a castle-inspired architectural design that could only be fit for the kings of the equestrian sport. A stunning fountain sits in front of the barn and provides an overall European aesthetic unlike any other found in Grand Prix Village. With stabling on the first floor, the facility primarily houses their talented string of European horses.

By hosting this elaborate and important event, the Jacobs family assured the Wellington and South Florida community that a FEI World Cup™ qualifier, always a fixture in the village, was here to stay after the potential for this pivotal event to leave Wellington and be held elsewhere in North America was raised in 2014. “I don’t think there is another town in America that is so synonymous with horses,” said Lou. “It would have been heart-breaking to lose this competition.”

“We had to put together a bid for this important horse show competition,” admits Lou Jacobs, who oversees Delaware North with more than 60,000 employees worldwide. “There are only seven East Coast events each year of this kind. We thought why not keep it in Wellington. We are creating a top horse show here; it is a very high-end and competitive event. Only the best horses and riders will participate and we are honored to be opening the doors of Deeridge Farm to the public for this event.”

In recent years, the Jacobs have been featured in international news outlets regarding their efforts to preserve Wellington as an equestrian community.

“We’ve been on this very precious land for more than three decades,” said Lou. “We had to take a stand for what we believed in. We primarily care about the horses and what this community has long-viewed as the core of the sport. Nature is as important as the equestrian preserve. Having large crowds and extensive commercialism would have changed the landscape of Wellington and what we, as equestrians, love about this place.”

Two of the Jacobs family’s top horses, Cassinja S and Sutton Place, walk next to their owners, Charlie and Katie, as a soft breeze caresses their manes. Katie and Charlie enjoy the sunset with their horses — something they’ve had the opportunity to witness together many times at their Deeridge Farm home since they were small children.

As they walk under the oak trees, sunlight teases the leaves and reflects in their smiles. It is indeed an oasis for the horses and their owners. The Jacobs family possesses a true dedication and love for the horse and the equestrian sport…and this is only the beginning!

Rollin McGrail’s Line, “The Escape Artist” If it’s true that elegance never goes out of style, then illustrator and Wellington resident Rollin McGrail will never be out of work. A local artist since 1989, having raised her family here in Wellington, she mixes water color and ink with ingenuity and amusement. She is indeed an “Escape Artist”, being able to work anywhere –from home or wherever her adventures take her. She currently creates her one-of- a-kind illustrations in a whirlwind of a studio in the heart of her colorful Wellington, Florida home.

The artist Rollin McGrail hails from New York but attended boarding school and art school in the United Kingdom before graduating from The Parson’s School of Design in New York.

She has graced countless magazines, newspapers, advertising, and book covers here and abroad with her ink and 32 | www.artbodegaMAGAZINE.com

water color wash drawings, renowned for their signature old guard elegance.

She learned to work to a deadline early in her career and that continues to this day. Two of her favorite truths are, “Necessity is the mother of invention” and, “The deadline is the inspiration!”

Rollin’s trademark images are recognizable both for their style and their content. Her work is agile, playful, formal, and wry — largely conceptual and at the same time lending an air of whimsy and grace to some of the most prosaic of subjects. Images kind-heartedly lampoon the rich while harkening back to the “Café Society” of the mid-20th century: the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thorn Smith’s television series, Topper, the films of Nick and Nora Charles, and the early years of the satirical New Yorker magazine cartoonist Peter Arno. One can easily spot Rollin’s tuxedo’d butlers with nose pointed in the air while serving champagne, prim riders poised and dressed for the ring, or society matrons waving cigarette holders with raised pinkies and a martini glass in hand.

“Connecting past and present with dashes of magical realism, my illustrations portray a contemporary sensibility that alternates between social satire and the small town bonhomie of yesteryear. The search is for light, lightness and energy – for the hidden understanding of things – all in hopes that

a single drawing can galvanize thoughts which were formally obstructed.”

While rubbing shoulders with the equestrian set, Rollin frequently uses anthropomorphic animals as characters in her sketches – most often horses and dogs. When dressing animals as humans, one can more easily empathize with the subject matter and at the same time sidestep the trouble of accidentally offending someone.

Rollin’s career began in 1980 when she left behind her job as art assistant to the Art Director at Esquire magazine in New York to pursue a full-time career as a starving artist and illustrator in Paris.

She readily skipped off to Paris with the notion that art was an international language, and with luck, it turned out that it was. Ignorance really is bliss, especially when you are young and hungry.

It was while working in France that Rollin developed the unique nostalgic style she is known for today. It could well have been an accidental byproduct of being homesick, miles away from parents and her “Brady Bunch” blended family of ten siblings. To see and portray the old in a new light was something she did subconsciously and so, in combination with a talent to amuse, it remains her favorite way to express herself.

She was also greatly influenced by the Surrealist painter, Rene Magritte, whose work captured her sensitivity.

Magritte had a combination of humor, mystery and simplicity that inspired the new emerging conceptual thinker. One of his great lines was, “Communication happens when an image reminds the viewer of his own knowledge.”

Rollin shrewdly capitalized on her growing success when she crossed her trademark 1930’s style illustrations with a classic European sensibility. Her first published piece from Esquire magazine helped pave the way.

With an impressive list of French and British magazines in which her illustrations appeared including Marie Claire, Vogue Hommes, The International Herald Tribune,L’Observateur, Le Point, Telerama, Medicine et Enfance, The Ob-

server and Time Out, her list of clients reads like a virtual “who’s who” of internationally read publications.

In due course she was published in almost every publication in France and the United States, and received several distinguished awards throughout her career.

If Rollin’s success has a Magic Pill, it is to love what you do and the time you spend doing it. She believes picture-making is habit forming. “It is an addiction, but only if you able to it again and again. If you are happier –more excited—then time passes quickly. If you are more engaged sitting alone making pictures then you are in love with the process.”

Rollin has exhibited in galleries from Paris to Barcelona, New York to Key West, and now also in Palm Beach. The bulk of her production is aimed at national newspapers, magazines and book publishers, with a sprinkling of advertising.

In any given week, the Chief Corporate Development Officer and Country Relationship Leader of France can be found in Paris, New York, Wellington, Las Vegas, Chicago or Normandy serving clients, driving growth strategies, riding her horses, or attending the equestrian World Cup final. She is a “virtual operator” with plenty of places to be in the course of a week. “I love the variety my work with Deloitte and my passion for horses gives me – I push for the best in both, and I go to where the action is to drive results.”

Judy’s career has spanned many different roles none of which necessarily pointed to where she is now. Her success has partly been the result of forging new paths and voicing opinions that may differ from the norm. “I’ve come to appreciate the different lens I use to assess situations and vision the way forward.” The same is true of her other pursuits, including spearheading Deloitte’s interest in equestrian and sponsorship in Dressage – a first for the sport.

Judy is married to David Sloan, a former uranium trader and senior executive who has a passion and an unmatched talent for optimizing real estate and brand imaging. With horse farms in Millbrook, N.Y. and Wellington, Fl., the couple’s off time revolves around horses. Weekends are filled with polo matches and dressage shows.

When the couple decided to look for a second property, Wellington was high on the list. A village, like Millbrook, where the equestrian disciplines converge, it’s a hub of excellence with countless opportunities to learn and grow from the best who also reside there.

It was important to find a well-situated farm close to the show and polo grounds with “good bones and existing infrastructure.” They found just what they wanted in a non-descript facility in Wellington. Through ingenuity and elbow grease, the property, like the barn in Millbrook, is now home to one of Wellington’s most distinct stables, a notable achievement given the multitude of high-end horse farms in the area. Winter base for Hunter rider Kelly Farmer, the barn now feels like a place where you would relax with a glass of wine. “If you believe our goal is to ensure our horses live better than we do, we can consider that goal met!” Judy chuckles.

Just as a passion for pushing for the best and beyond drives Judy’s work in the corporate world, the same is true in her equestrian pursuits. While Judy is on a personal journey to earn her Gold Medal in dressage, she is even more avid about raising the equestrian discipline’s visibility in mainstream America and is focused on Corporate America as a starting point. “When you look at the talent agendas of the world’s most successful organizations, they mirror the attributes of an accomplished equestrian partnership,” Judy comments. Namely, that “teamwork and precision drive success, and an inclusive culture that fosters the performance

of both women and men is a prerequisite to being the best whether you are a large global company or the US Equestrian Team. It’s time to make these connections” she affirms, giving one last pat to a horse in the field before she runs to her next conference call.

Peter Muller has asked me to take a look at his horses and give a written account of my impressions.

This is a fully fledged challenge, and that’s hardly an exaggeration: these horses were born out of photography, copper, rust, observation, imagination, and alchemy – which writhe across the canvas in the company of breathtakingly beautiful quadrupeds of Rubenesque and Andalusian lineage and archangels equipped with invisible wings that take the place of helmets, muzzles and manes. And wings – until otherwise proven – were made for flight; they are not of the earth, but of the ether. Wings were sported by Pegasus – the stallion of Zeus, foaled from Medusa’s blood – and it was wings Pegasus used to reach the summit of Olympus, being as he was the first nonhuman animal that the gods allowed to enter the precincts of that sacred mount. Peter’s horses are motion in its purest form: air in the air, darting arrows, flares, hurricanes, élan of life, the hippogriffs that Calderon’s Rosaura conjured up to “run with the wind”, causing Italo Calvino’s nonexistent cavaliers to morph into wingèd centaurs. The dwellers of Ancient Hellas believed that horses were psychopomps, like cats and dogs, whose mission was to guide the souls of humans in their journey into the afterlife, taking them from the place in which they died to the place from where they came.

That place may have been Nothingness, but it may also have been the All, and the saddle-less riders who stand in the imaginary stirrups of these horses shall see the other side of the horizon, and fly from heaviness to lightness, from matter to Spirit, from Existence to Being’s remotest heights. As a child, when learning Spanish literature, I memorised a quatrain that read: “My need is to do battle / And once upon my steed / Wide rolls Castile before me / Underneath my horse’s feet...” Castile, the pastures of Andalusia, the whole wide world – who cares! I now have a three-year-old son, whom I carry piggyback from the kitchen to his bedroom every night while attuning my voice to our trot and prodding with my utterances the flanks of his joy: “Let’s walk, let’s trot, let’s break into a gallop now!”. After seeing Peter’s horses, however, I must change my tune: “Let’s fly!” And fly we shall.

Jorge Montalvo, the artist

By Alexander Zilo The undeniable passion for one of nature’s most beautiful animals, combined with a rare and innate talent, has led artist Jorge Ernesto Montalvo Flores to devote his life’s work to Horses and Equestrian Sports. Jorge’s steadfast dedication to the study of the traits and morphology of the horse is reflected in nearly 700 original masterpieces.

As a youngster in Quito, Ecuador, Jorge began to stand out as a rider of distinction in the “La Pradera” equestrian club, obtaining significant awards. In 1978 he won the National Children’s Championship and moved to Mexico. It was in Guadalajara and Jalisco, where he excelled especially as a good rider.

It is in Guadalajara, where his creative talents begin to take shape as a fine artist, specializing in watercolors, arousing the admiration of his peers and knowledgeable of the horse world.

He graduated Advertising Graphic Design and Architectural Design in Bribriesca Academy in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1984. He later continued his studies in Coronado, California, where he made his first Informal Exhibition in National Jumping Competition in the Del Mar Racecourse with great success.

His singular style and sensitive eye are revealed in paintings and sculptures in diverse formats, making use of 38 | www.artbodegaMAGAZINE.com

some of the most complex techniques ever applied within the various media of watercolor, marble, fine serpentine stone, iron and other metallic elements. Historically, his drawings, showing a deep sense of equine anatomy.

Jorge Montalvo’s work has been recognized by experts and critics from both the art and equine worlds, and his works have come to be appreciated from the artistic as well as technical points of view. Jorge’s art is found in many important private and public collections. Commissioned by Spain’s, Queen Sofia, his work is part of the holdings of prominent organizations such as the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation; the private collections of Royal Families and Heads of State; the personal collection of the famed House of Pedro Domecq; and the private residence of Don Antonio Ariza Cañadilla, a supporter and a close friend of the artist.

During the month of October 2005, at the National Championship for the Pure Spanish Horse in Mexico to which Jorge Montalvo was an invited guest, a dialogue was initiated by me. After further conversation, several points of common interest were agreed upon, among those, the idea to paint and immortalize the finest Pure Spanish Horses in the Americas, establishing a collection of portraits which undoubtedly would become a first in the world of equestrian pictorial art. This project is a dream-come-true for the artist, since it allowed Jorge Montalvo the chance to expand and complement the knowledge he acquired when he assembled a book of equestrian portraiture for the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation in Spain, for Mr. Jorge Hank Rhon in Mexico, and for other collectors throughout the Americas.

While Jorge Montalvo travels the world to fulfill his commissions, he resides in Quito, Ecuador with his lovely wife, Sandra and children, Antonio and Sara.

The impressive stables, arena and paddocks are always impeccably maintained for the horses. Both the owner of the home and Johnson are dressage riders and have competed internationally. Johnson fell in love with this lifestyle a long time ago and since then has participated in the sport.

Johnson said he believes compassion for the horse is the key to success in training and competing. It’s this same compassion for others which he attributes to his success in business. “In real estate you’re constantly working with clients in different phases of their lives and under different circumstances and pressures, some happy and some sad. You have to be able to navigate and guide people through these waters, while at the same time moving them towards the end goal, closing. I always try to do this with compassion while following my intuition”, said Johnson.

ed States and the sole U.S. representatives at the World Championships for young horses in Verden, Germany. Matt’s drive and determination for success is clear both in and out of the show ring.

Knowing how to balance the equestrian lifestyle with business seems to be imperative to achieving positive results. “With our lives and livelihoods designed around the horses, it only makes sense that our homes should complement the way we live”, says Johnson. It’s not hard to see, that understanding this dynamic has helped Johnson become Wellington’s “go to” Realtor and contributed to his 17 years of success.

Where did the tradition of Zuccarelli’s begins?

It started in Italy in Calabria, Southern Italy. This is the coastal city facing the Mediterranean. My grandparents were traditional and liked to sit at the table. They had a deli and a café downstairs. On my father’s side it was the food industry and on my mother’s side they did masonry. Even though I was born in New York, my first language was Italian, and when I visited Italy they could not believe I was an American.

I remember a spiral staircase and my grandfather being the last one to be seated at the table. Once he did he would say “Bon Apetito”, it was very family oriented. My grandmother was the cook, she was one of those women that liked everything fresh. She picked up the mushrooms in the field, it was organic, all healthy. If we participated in a wedding, we never wasted anything. It’s a tradition to bring a pig to the family for these celebrations, you would accept them and then we even used the pig skin and boil it to enjoy this succulent dish with a great sauce.

What is the secret to your success in business?

When we moved to New York, my mother’s side of the family lived there, but my father’s family remained in Italy. My grandmother did not want to leave, so we had to travel constantly to Italy to see her. We were nicknamed “bagaglio” which means suitcase, because we were always traveling. Sitting at the dinner table, it was usually veal pan fried, pasta with garlic and oil, and nothing else, except for home-made wine of course.

You have a book and now you are planning to write another one.

Tell us about it?

For the family and Zuccarellis tradition always comes back. We kind of tweak things but quality never changes. Never compromises. In November it will be 35 years in business as we opened on October 16, 1981.

I wrote a book about our family tradition, how we learned to love Italian food. The new one will be s a new take on Italian food and it will be a surprising side of what Zuccarelli’s is about. Recently I’ve been doing local television appearances and book signings, www.artbodegaMAGAZINE.com | 47

You also want to follow your older clientele into the benefits of organic food that our forefathers taught us. Grand papa used to sit in Calabria, he had his veal, the loaf of bread was set in the table uncut and you would break it, and dip it with olive oil. Younger people love to do this too, and it prevail in the families. That’s what matters at the end of the day.

Your family history is important to you…tell us about them?

My mother grew up in the country In Italy. My father was 14 when he started working and my mother was 11. I’ve inherited this, I’m very proud and very blessed to be in this position, to take our family history to a new level. I’m third generation in the restaurant business.

My mother at 11 was ironing shirts for 3.15 cents a week in Westchester County and saving half of what she made to build a foundation. My father was working in the deli when he was a teenager in the Salumeria (Italian deli). He used to make the sausage, cure the prosciutto hanging, he was making fresh mozzarella salted and unsalted. All this hard work built the restaurant and brand we now own and that is priceless.

HORSES HEALING HEARTS BRINGS HOPE TO CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS For a few fortunate children of addicts in South Florida, there is a haven of safety and certainty where they can learn coping skills and life lessons.

Horses Healing Hearts works with children of alcohol or substance addicted parents to teach them the skills they don’t get at home. Worldwide more than 28 million children have alcohol or substance addicted parents. 11 million of these children are under the age of 18. Sadly, few programs exist to offer support and guidance for these children.

Horses Healing Hearts was founded in 2009 by Liz Olszewski, who grew up with an alcoholic mother and step-father and stood where these kids now stand. Olszewski’s stepfather thankfully became sober when she was 12. At that time, the man who had once caused her bitterness soon became her mentor, and he was the one who was instrumental in first introducing Olszewski to horses – the animals now at the center of Horses Healing Hearts.

“Horses are highly instinctual animals,” says Olszewski, “You can’t

fool them about what is really going on inside your heart.”

Through the magnificence of the horse and human relationship, the kids learn responsibility, confidence and that they can have a great life based on the decisions they make every day.

Children ages 6-18 meet weekly for two-hour prevention education sessions that consist of peer-to-peer counseling overseen by a certified Prevention/Mental Health Specialist. They ride, groom and care for the horses used by the program. These weekly sessions provide a safe place to share their feelings and to learn coping strategies.

Kaley’s mom and siblings all struggle with addiction. Kaley, like other children of addicts, became the adult in the family, sacrificing her own childhood to care for the rest of her family.

For Kaley, Horses Healing Hearts, which she called her “second home” provided an escape from the difficult environment at home. Now, Horses Healing Hearts is her only “home,” as her mother, brother and sister are currently living in a shelter.

Kaley shares her feelings of isolation and the struggle to pretend that everything is okay with her family.

Through the support of generous individuals, organizations and volunteers, Olszewski hopes to see Horses Healing Hearts spread nationwide, bringing healing to children of alcoholics and breaking the cycle of addiction everywhere.

eight gain is never a happy subject for someone who has put on an excessive amount of weight.

What is the result? Love handles or muffin top, a belly, back fat or chin fat. We can camouflage or hide most of it except for the fat on the face. Those who gain weight in their face aren’t able to cover it up, so the only alternative is to lose weight. However, many people struggle with chin fat and it may have nothing to do with their weight at all. Previously the only alternative was liposuction.

While liposuction is still a smart choice, many people do not want to have any type of incisions or downtime.

The downtime is minimal if you have laser liposuction vs. traditional liposuction, but the very thought of it makes some people nervous.

Jessica Newman spent the first twenty-two years of her life as a committed and ambitious equestrian athlete. From the age of five when she began competing in the pony hunters to her first international Grand Prix at sixteen, Jessica worked every day to excel in her sport. Toward the end of her riding career, Jessica started to realize that there was a lot more out there and that I was living in a very privileged circle. At the age of twenty-two, Jessica decided to quit riding and delved into humanitarian work, eventually founding JustWorld International in 2003.

Through Jessica’s equestrian network, an organic relationship was born. Passionate supporters of the nonprofit organization JustWorld International began working together to break the cycle of poverty by giving children the opportunity to become positive leaders in their communities. Hundreds of people from more than 40 different countries have joined the JustWorld, supporting 6,000 children this year alone, focusing on education, nutrition, health and hygiene, and leadership and cultural development programs.

JustWorld works with partners in Cambodia, Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras to help sustain programs that provide basic needs to children with little opportunity to receive support from other sources.

Amazing changes are happening because of JustWorld’s supporters.

Equestrians from around the world are welcome to join and jump for a Just World. JustWorld Ambassadors serve as spokespeople for the JustWorld international community, organize fundraisers, encouraging others to join, and wear the JustWorld colors in the ring. They also participate in local and international horse shows, including the famous Horseless Horse Show fundraisers, where riders of all ages join together for a fun competition mimicking what they would normally do on a horse.

JustWorld Ambassadors can often be seen wearing bright blue and purple gear show jackets, ear bonnets, and saddle pads, among others. Notable Ambassadors who ride in Wellington for the season include Laura Kraut, Candice King, Daniel Bluman, Andres Rodriguez, Hannah Selleck, Juan Andres Rodriguez, and Angela Covert.

JustWorld’s headquarters in Wellington, Florida, the mecca of horse show jumping, became a cohesive support system for the organization. The population in Wellington increases by twenty percent during the equestrian season. This equestrian community serves as an important engine for philanthropy. Many of the local businesses and key community members have stood side by side to promote JustWorld’s mission. Additionally, the JustWorld International Annual Gala held every January is a popular event amongst equestrians and non-equestrians alike, hosting more than 650 guests of the social elite in a tent beneath the stars, all to benefit JustWorld. It is through the unified power of Wellington and the rest of the equestrian community that JustWorld is able to make such strides throughout the world and will continue to empower thousands of children.
