Editor’s Note

W

e had an amazing time in New York City during Fashion Week. Through the week we met and talked with new designers and had lively chats with models seeking work in this fast-paced town. New York is a symbol of opportunity for any young up-and-coming person who wants to make it globally. So why not start locally, in the capital of the World!

One of the biggest surprises I’ve had, as an editor and a woman, was trying a new product that fascinated me. The e-mail introduction came across my inbox; once I saw the brand’s name, it captivated me. It transported me to the historical bridge built over the River Thames. For a moment I thought there was indeed a global cosmetic company called Londontown.

I quickly got in contact with Londontown’s marketing person who was kind enough to send me a complete sample of their product line. Once I saw the packaging, I was in awe.

It was beautiful, elegant, tempting, high quality, much like the Chanel or Givenchy products; but no, this was actually Londontown.

Today’s women are paying close attention to every minute detail of their bodies, so, why not show art though their hands? So, I tried the nail polish, a completely organic product. I fell in love with the color, the style, the subtlety of its description. Not only was I hooked, I became a fan of this new brand.

Intrigued, I accepted the invite to the fashion show the ladies, Natasha Dillons, Londontown Founder, and Marina Dimentman – her publicist- had extended me. There, the models had a distinctive nail design - a new trend that has captured women’s attention nowadays; a detailed design sketched in their nails gave the models a sensual air of grace and irreverence at the same time.

Dillon’s inspiration came from her grandmother’s work with herbal and organic products. Her story moved me so much we chose to feature and article for Londontown.

These entrepreneurial women created a unique start up that will no doubt explode into a phenomenon, one bound to go viral I am sure.

In our cover we have Natalia Valera, an accomplished Venezuelan artist based in Miami. For years, Valera was the head of all the Venezuelan biennials. Her original sculptures are made of a special plastic material which accentuates her style. Natalia’s cover picture was taken the Ritz Hotel in South Beach, a grand and delightful place. The staff and the atmosphere are pleasantly refreshing. Richard Lemus, the Ritz’s Marketing Director is the best!

The hotel’s walls are dressed with art. All of which comes from the Diana Lowenstein’s own art collection. In other words, the hotel walls’ fashion truly beautiful, exquisite art.

Alexandra Villard de Borchgrave An inspiring woman that offers hope to the most suffering

N

ot only is Alexandra Villard de Borchgrave one of the most elegant and stylish women in Washington D.C., her pureness and dedication to the most suffering made her the author of a series of books and dvds enacting the mission of healing in the world. Her series of inspirational poetry, Healing Light, Heavenly Order, and Beloved Spirit has expanded to the patient rooms in the most prestigious hospitals where Borchgrave’s art can be seen, heard, and felt in the heart of cancer patients and victim disasters.

A creative individual herself, Borchgrave worked as a photojournalist, author, and poet in the Capitol City, capturing beautiful images of the most honorable men including President George Bush, the late King Hussein, Dr. Henry Kissinger, and the late President Sadat that have hung in government offices throughout the world . enice, Italy- In the fall of 2013, the luxury car brand Maserati launched its relationship with the 70th Venice International Film Festival at the Venice Biennale as the main sponsor. Stars and corporate executives from Maserati gathered at the swimming pool area of the Hotel Excelsior to create their own central space as a vital part of the Venetian film festival dedicated to interviews, meetings, cocktail parties and events.

Receiving the Italian and international guests and the entire jury of the Franca Sozzani Festival, was the editor of L’Uomo Vogue and Maserati CEO Harald Wester. Moët & Chandon was the official liquor brand sponsor of the 70th Venice International Film Festival.

As the well known champagne was served, an elegant dinner took place with another exclusive party at the Palazzina Grassi. During the evening, djs played music sets during a cocktail for Marina Abramovic’s new trailer movie, and the DJ Matteo Ceccarini also entertained the crowd with two live performances.

Breaking down the last taboo, the stigma of admitting to plastic surgery, Dr. Kassir invited his patients to participate in this innovative runway presentation during Fashion Week in New York, an event he anticipates making an annual showcase for his work and celebrity patients. He conceived the event as a platform for this diverse group of men and women to display their newly found confidence as a result of facial procedures ranging from Botox to Rhinoplasty, a particular specialty of Dr. Kassir.

He shares with Art Bodega how this unique event that garnered worldwide attention came to pass, “FACES OF BEAUTY morphed from a small exhibition into a full runway show thanks to the incredible enthusiasm of my patients and their pride in the transformation plastic surgery has helped achieve. n October was the annual “2013 Fiesta” gala at The Mandarin Oriental in New York City benefiting the Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education. This year’s honorees were John Demsey, France Chrétien Desmarais, and Eddie Palmieri. The Honorary Fiesta Gala Chairs were Ana Cristina Alvarado, Alina Cho, Eddie Palmieri II, Gabriela Palmieri. The 2013 Honorary Jr. Chairmen, the “Pachanga” chairs were Jane Bloomingdale de Cisneros and Henrique Cisneros. As has become the tradition, Jacqueline Weld Drake, Aileen Mehle, and Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia again served as the Dinner Chairmen.

n an effort to connect the contemporary art market and the non-profit art world, ArtCenter has invited South Florida-based gallery Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art to exhibit some of the artists from Jazzar’s roster. The pop up show will consist of a curated exhibition featuring four gallery artists: Kuhl & Leyton, Jorge Pantoja, David Rohn and Roberto Visani. Each artist/artist team explores varied manifestations of masculinity.

Carol Jazzar exhibits at her house designed as a gallery, surrounded by nature. She prefers to showcase contemporary art because there was a need amongst her friends/artists for space exhibit. Eventually she has become a staple in South Florida when it comes to curatorial services in the city of Miami.

n November 19, Christie’s Evening sale of Latin American Art will be led by Rufino Tamayo’s Women Reaching for the Moon (illustrated above, for an estimate of $1,200,0001,800,000) which hails from the Cleveland Museum of Art and has been exhibited internationally at such renowned institutions as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. and Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City among others.

La Rosa by Matta (illustrated page 2 estimate: $250,000-350,000) will also be sold on behalf of the museum and proceeds from both works will benefit future acquisitions.

Rufino Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991) was recognized for his masterful use of surface and color and his commitment to a thoroughly modernist language. The 1940s were a great creative period for Tamayo and the artist garnered widespread attention in his newly adopted home of New York. Many of his works captured the zeitgeist of a war-torn world through visual metaphors, but Women Reaching for the Moon, pain-

ted in 1946, expresses the optimism of the post-World War II era, a shift in Tamayo’s oeuvre.

Recognized early on as a major work by a promising artist, this painting entered the Cleveland Museum of Art's collection in 1947, the year after its completion. Widely published and exhibited, Tamayo depicts two women striving for the stars and moon, representing hope and human potential.

The cosmos and the search for man’s place within it was a constant theme in Tamayo’s work. This interest in the cosmos has resonance with contemporaneous paintings of the New York School as well as pre-Columbian art which frequently features the sun, moon and stars.

Matta (1911-2002), the visionary Chilean, was a dynamic figure on the New York scene since his arrival in New York from Paris in 1938.

The artist served as a conduit between the European Surrealists who had gathered in New York, and the emerging New York School. Though intimate in scale, La rosa, painted in 1943, possesses all of the trademark elements that by the mid-1940s had become hallmarks of Matta’s production. In the present work, Matta channels a morphological landscape painted withvibrant hues of green, red, orange, black, and yellow set against a horizonless background.

The painting’s title, La Rosa is reminiscent of the surrealist penchant for verbal puns and recalls Marcel Duchamp’s pseudonym Rrose Sélavy, a play on words intended to sound like the French phrase “Eros, c'est la vie”(“Eros, that's life”). Matta pays a veiled homage to Duchamp while further underscoring the sensual nature of this painting—a work that is overflowing with the persistent and primordial forces of life, creation, and evolution.

oday as yesterday behind the door of every home lies the identity and social status of its residents. An exhibition taking place January 12, 2014, in Brooklyn, goes inside some particular households to tell history of Hispanic American's homes.

The exhibit is based in the decor and art displays deployed in Hispanic American households from 1492 to 1898. The exhibit focuses on about 200 objects divided into a series of rooms that simulate those of the so-called “noble part” of the households, which comprises public and private areas.

A strict protocol dictated who could access those rooms, luxuriously decorated with items from Europe, Asia and America. Sitting in the middle of the main trade routes between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Hispanic America was home for some of the world’s richest people.

The home's public spaces - such as the reception hall, were richly decorated. Those rooms had an open view of streets and were used to welcome national and international dignitaries, as well as all types of visitors: from a priest to friends and relatives. A strict protocol governed these visits. The guest arrived with letters of introduction and had to wait to be greeted.

The family room instead, was dedicated solely to receive the most intimate of friends and

relatives. It was the only place where family and visitors could recline, a position only acceptable by the strictest of Hispanic American etiquette.

The private chapel was secluded place which emphasized the house owner's status. The status derived from the fact that in order to have a private chapel, the resident had to obtain proper permission from the Church authorities. In the chapel they celebrated Mass for the family, servants and guests; however, these were not were not consecrated spaces.

The most private area of the house was the Master Bedroom.

There, the family kept its most precious and valuable items. There, the marriages were consummated. There, children were born and the home residents died. Part of its decoration was the bed, the crib, privacy bedding screens, trunks, a small table or desk and luxurious fabrics and textiles.

When travelling they liked to make full display of their wealth. Hand chairs and carriages were embellished with glass windows and furniture were all part of their luggage.

ew York photographer and writer Heidi M. Nunnally didn’t expect to become so friendly with the earth when she set foot in the South of France last year, but two spills in a mire-rich pond on her first day were a wake-up call.

“I was standing in the water, shooting pictures of the horses, and the muck under the surface had suction to it. I tried to lift my foot up, but it wouldn’t budge and it caused me to lose my balance. Down I went!” Heidi laughed.

Heidi’s photographic instinct, however, triggered her to quickly raise her arm and save her camera from an unwelcome mud bath. The second spill came when a horse unexpectedly sideswiped her.

“I was trying to get the best possible shot,” Heidi offered, trying to explain her risky moves.

If these photos are any indication, it paid off and she got the shot. And then some. These stout, swift-moving horses of the Camargue, a rich wetland area, hypnotize and entrance.

said. “The muscular shapes of their bodies and the long white manes captivated me.”

Heidi grew up in Virginia and made the transition to New York City in the summer of 2000. She got her first 35mm camera as a teenager and dove into the digital world several years ago.

“Digital photography is easier these days and my workflow is much faster. That gives me more time to photograph,” she delights in saying. “And I push myself to look for opportunities I would otherwise miss out on.”

Heidi has also written and edited essays for a Holocaust newsletter and writes her own “Heidi’s New York Life Adventure” and “Morning Train” series. When she can, she spends weekends doing street photography.

Having recently received the honor of Judge’s Choice award at a gallery show in New York City’s Soho, her star is on the rise. But she likes to stay under the radar, spending her time behind the lens and contemplating her stories.

VALERA A Beautiful artist with a passion for sculptures She hails from Caracas with an impressive pedigree. Blonde, slender and very firm in her ideas, Natalia Valera is not just any artist. She is the grand dame that walks around a room with sure confidence that art is her world. As she arrived to the shoot at The Ritz in South Beach, she delighted herself with a martini in hand and posed gracefully at the high end suites located in the art deco building.

Both Natalia and her posse knows that her work is here to last. Her sculptures and paintings are beautiful, one-of-a kind pieces that resemble the artist Mondrian. “When I get into the studio, I just put on my goggles and start painting with really strong materials, the ones you use for car or aircraft paint”, says the talented Latina, who moved to Miami just a few years ago. “Plenty of people can’t even fathom the idea of what we go through as artists to create these boxes”.

The boxes are made of a clear acrylic, not glass, but so heavy on the volume you have a hard time carrying or moving the piece. At the suite, Valera positioned two pieces, one next to each other, creating an optical illusion that seems spectacular, just by playing with the natural eye of the spectator.

Her experience comes from those days while working for him at these fairs. “I was able to immerse myself in

the work of other artists, people who are masters in their craft. That influence enabled me to master the technique”.

institution- to showcase her art in a recent exhibition in New York City. Her paintings are gorgeous pieces with linear colors, adding a particular taste for mixing different hues that create a special sensation of pleasantness.

Her early career

“I started painting when I was nine years old. I’ve always had a passion for art, I was insanely creative”, says the beauty while enjoying a light meal at the Ritz property. Surrounded by art, guests feel they are immersed in a spacious art gallery in the art deco structure originally known as “El Lido”. Today the hotel is known as The Ritz in South Beach and many of the art pieces are owned by gallery owner Diana Lowenstein. The Renaissance of hotels in the area has captured the attention of Art Basel lovers, who flock the town at the beginning of December to get an eyeful of what art collectors crave.

“I went to a design institute that was very strict. They wanted perfection, they were very demanding and the professors at this institution were masters in their craft. Once I worked for Guevara, we were organizing a biennial. In 1998, he passed away and I was left working in the trade industry organizing the art fairs and meeting other artists. I became an assistant to these great masters that were 30 years older than me”, mentions the stylish Valera.

“In Caracas I had a group of friends that came from the geometric and kinetic movement. For us in Venezuela, the kinetic movement is the grandest of all in the arts. I exhibit with these great masters like Carlos Cruz Diez and Rafael Soto. To me it is was an honor, and for almost a decade I was fortunate enough to learn from them while working at our studios in Oripoto.

We would come back and forth, intermingling with each other’s knowledge making sculptures and paintings, learning to do both”.

“I returned to Caracas after I went to Parsons School in New York City. I feel like it was a great period to see what was going on in New York City, create friendships there, and just delivered the results for my style. Once I got back in the late 90’s, I became the artist I am now”. Her work is superb and heavily influenced by the kinetic movement that started in Paris in the late 40’s.

Dadaism and optical illusion was big in Paris, and can be considered the base for great graphic design of today, considered a great asset of the contemporary art scene. “When I was handling the paintings we used, some of them very toxic, I learned to create my own colors. I even registered these colors under my name”, perfecting the art within the art of color, illusion, acrylic and more.

“I love the colors I see in Miami. I feel this city is getting a strong recognition and attraction through Art Basel. It has grown incredibly”, moving to Miami just four years ago, Valera is slowly climbing the field of recognized artists worldwide. “I strongly decide where to exhibit my pieces. I am very particular with whom I exhibit in a group show”, professes Valera who has shown her art in Beijing, Shanghai, New York City, and of course, Miami.

“I’m starting from scratch again. I negotiate alone. I go to my studio and disconnect from the world and prepare my art carefully. I stay there by myself and create one piece after another, I finalize a day of work with one good piece that I know is perfect. That is what kinetics love to do, find perfection in their art”.

“It is hard to detach myself from a finished piece of work. Very hard. It is like your baby, you don’t want to let go. Some of these boxes include 18 layers of work, paint, sanding. I am very passionate about my sculptures and ultimately I design them to please my inner creativity and nothing else”, the boxes are worth thousands of dollars and these pieces are a favorite of collectors in Latin America.

“My big goal is to reach that level of recognizance for an artist. I want the world to know what I do through my passion, feel like if there is a beautiful hotel or a grand museum that desires my piece, I will have it there”, leaving art lovers with the feeling that any talented Hispanic can make it to the top through persistence and a love for art.

The Guest of Honour was world-famous actress Andie Mac Dowell. As in previous years, Barbara Shoneberger hosted the event alongside Programme Director Ruth Neri and Manfred Kroneder. The motto of the event was “Colour my life”.

During the event, a special award, the “Douglas Charity Star” was given to book author Sophie Van Der Strap and actress Lisa Tomaschewsky. This important recognition is given to those individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to people suffering from cancer. It also establishes a tradition to raise awareness and inspire others to take action for this good cause.

The awardee author wrote a book called “Today I am Blond” which is a touching and heartening diary of her illness and recovery that teams with zest for life. Meanwhile, the actress Tomaschewsky did a film adaptation of the novel where she gives the protagonist not just one but nine faces and takes the viewer on a journey that leaves lasting memories, both tragic and beautiful.

or the first time in history, the Fashion Show in Madrid opened its door to Latin America. Peru was the Guest Country, presenting a joint fashion show with three designers. Furthermore, the designer Lorena Saravia, born in Mexico, took part of the Samsung EGO Platform as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent initiative.

Some of the designers showcasing their talent were, Roberto Torretta who opened the Fashion Show Schedule, followed by the designers Ailanto, Ana Locking, Roberto Verino, Duyos, Victorio&Lucchino and Juanjo Oliva. The AA Collection from Amaya Arzuaga opened the proceedings, followed by a series of fashion shows staged by Andrés Sardá, Devota&Lomba, Teresa Helbig, Miguel Palacio and Angel Schlesser.

Another participant was the Valencian designer, Francis Montesinos, who kicked off the third day of the fashion show schedule, followed

by Etxeberria and Rabaneda, Juana Martín and Ion Fiz, and Maya Hansen and María Barros.

Meche Correa, the self-taught Peruvian designer and artist participated in the grand show.

Each of Meche’s creations constitutes a reworking of Peru’s past and a highly unique way of keeping the country’s traditions, fabrics and art alive.

For her part, the designer, Sitka Semsch, has had a highly successful professional career spanning a period of more than 12 years. After completing her studies at the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States, she worked for the American designer, Michael Kors, as well as for the retail chain known as The Limited. Sitka currently serves as a Country Brand Ambassador in Peru and she is the only Latin American designer who takes part at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia in Moscow, where she has showcased her collections since 2004. Her creations encompass everything ranging from ready-to-wear and evening dresses to cocktail attire, wedding gowns and accessories.

Jessica Butrich has established herself as one of the most active and promising young Peruvian designers of her generation. A year after graduating from the Centre for Higher Fashion Design (CEAM) in 2005, she founded the labels, Butrich Shoes and Butrich Couture.

Today, the label, Butrich by Jessica Butrich, serves as a key point of reference in Peru due to her unique fashion vision and her ability to rework the fashion trends of the past.

After that, it gets really difficult for me to go”, says the undeniably- striking star known for her breakout role as ‘Angel,’ a role she played opposite to Seth Rogan, James Franco and Johan Hill in the film, ‘This is the End.’ “I moved to Los Angeles six years ago with my family. I still live with my mom, she is my rock in my life. We live in this very cute little place which she loves to decorate it and is always buying art for. She keeps me grounded,” says Wilder. Her sister has also been part of Hollywood, when she starred as a playmate centerfold for the gentleman’s magazine Playboy. “I have been in the mansion at an early age, because of my sister, but I really don’t go there anymore. It used to be more fun some years ago.”

Her new role will be in the movie ‘Mining for Ruby’ - due out in 2014. She will star as the alluring temptress Carla. Wilder will be working alongside Mischa Barton, Billy Zane and Jonathan Bennett. “I used to tell myself that I was destined for Hollywood. I was homeschooled because I was constantly bullied when I was very young, by girls and boys. My mom did not want me to go through that so she was very supportive,” says this spectacular brunette.

orn in the Bronx, New York, Vivienne Jurado’s roots are deep-seated in Puerto Rico - Her parents came to the United States from the Enchanted Island and settled in New York City. Vivienne’s intriguing physical features showcase a beautiful young woman set to make a splash in Big Apple the acting scene.

“When I was very young, I wanted to be an actress. My mother was worried about me because I loved watching television so much she had to limit my viewing. I chose this career because I am fascinated with people” says this Bronx beauty who also resided in Puerto Rico.

Vivienne’s mother was a stay-at-home mom, her father was a barber. Both had a fascination for fashion and beauty, something they instilled in her and her four other siblings. “I participated in a pageant. I won, but in the end they wanted to relieve me from winning because they said the votes were fixed,” says Vivienne reminiscing laughing about her past experiences. Proof positive that to persevere in a crowded and sometimes hostile field, using a good sense of humor is a vital survival tool.

Jurado is an expert on accents: She can act using a New York a, Spanish or Puerto Rican accent. She even played a gorgeous Brazilian dancer in Al Pacino’s ‘Carlito’s Way.’ Her television credits are just as impressive. Marc Penn, Sean Penn’s brother, picked her to play a part in an episode of ‘America’s Most Wanted.’ Currently, Vivienne has the lead role in an Indy project called “Dirty Shield.”

Although she tried her luck in Hollywood- and loved the experience, she couldn’t stay away from New York. “When you are used to this city,

where you can enjoy an infinite variety of restaurants and see so much diversity. I love New York and I am certain I can make it here as an actress,” explains this stunning brunette.

Playing the role of a NYPD psychologist in the movie “Dirty Shield”, brings Jurado joy and gives her a reason to pause to take a bit of a reflective look inside. She really is enjoying her participation in the film. “Uniqueness is priceless, I can embrace that now. ‘Seek and thou shall find’, was also my motto,” says the Puerto Rican actress.

5.- When toenails are thick and difficult to cut, soak your feet in warm salt water.

6.- Avoid “digging out” ingrown toenails, especially if they are infected and sore. If you are suffering from an ingrown toenail, see a dermatologist for treatment. Yes, see a dermatologist to treat ingrown toenails, but to prevent them, shape the nail straight across,

not round and avoid cutting the nails to short as stated above.

igerian born Amaka Osakwe had her recent fashion show presenting her Spring/Summer 2014 line Maki Oh. Beautiful models filled the room with her latest designs, inspired by the Western silhouettes and native materials she uses in her designs. Maki Oh is the only African based fashion label recognized globally, as it was launched in 2010 by the designer.

Osakwe studied design at the Arts University in Bournemouth and her work is admired by the likes of Beyonce, Rihanna and Kerry Washington. Her fashion line comes from a strong sense of identity and African culture the brand creates alluring conversational pieces that fuse traditional techniques with detailed construction. One of the most interesting methods she uses in her designs is the Adire method, which consists of a dye with indigo leaves and painted pattern with a paste from cassava.

The Lady of Scents Australian Woman Creates Skincare, Perfume to Help People Remember

W

hat was the world like before modern technology?

What was is like before the hustle and bustle of modern times? What was it like at the origin of human civilization? What did that unpolluted world look like, sound like, smell like? These are the questions being asked by self-described modern day Australian ‘scent therapist,’ Moreen Liao.

“The process of creating scents connects me with my lost past. I feel very complete when I stay with the scents, the pure essences of the botanicals. They love to be re-created by me, as I love them and know them.

It heals me,” she says as she speaks shyly over coffee.

Born to a Taiwanese schoolteacher and businessman, Moreen was raised in the countryside of Taiwan by her parents’ large flower and herb garden, in which she found herself playing often as a child.

Moreen’s grandparents were practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and her grandfather in particular would often distribute the herbs he cultivated freely to needy villagers or friends in the area.

“He cared about people, cared about plants, and he imparted that teaching on to me.”

A love of botanicals eventually drew her to Australia, a country notable for its rare selection of native botanicals that don’t grow anywhere else in the world. A fashion major in college, Moreen’s first job was as a cosmetics counter girl for a Sydney department store. Though she

wasn’t making the formulas at the time, the vocation stuck. She went on to work for a large cosmetics ingredient supplier and eventually founded her own company, with the goal to make organic and entirely plant-based versions of the skincare and perfumes she loved.

“We call our perfume range ‘scentherapy’ because it’s really about healing people, about reconnecting with one’s past, with one’s innate self, free from the pollution and cares of the modern world.”

And unlike almost all commercial perfumes, the one’s Moreen’s company makes are entirely free from artificial scents, petroleum distillates, and chemical fixatives. They are 100% plant-based.

“They’re certified organic and there really isn’t anything bad for you in them, either. We say you could almost drink our perfumes. Not that we recommend it.” She laughs.

The ingredients she uses are high quality. It’s not exactly a cheap perfume either, the Rose Scentherapy retails for around $250.

“There’s over 10,000 roses in every bottle,” she adds playfully.

I guess it’s worth it. Her customers seem to think so, and with a recent Greenpeace article detailing a study showing over 100 trace toxic chemicals in modern department store perfumes, it may be worth it for your health as well.

Moreen’s company, Ausganica, is now one of the world’s pioneers in organic cosmetics and a pioneer in organic farming as well, possessing a 450 acre farm in Australia that sources many of Ausganica’s ingredients.

(Many of the rest are sourced from a small organic farm in France, owned by a friend). But her Moreen’s dream doesn’t stop there. She wants to educate people, especially children, about scents.

“It’s like a lost art, modern education focuses a lot on sight and sound but what about smell? There is no education for it. I’d like to start a school one day, that’s my dream, and people can come and learn about scents and maybe make some of their own soap.”

Aurora is a rising star When did you start singing?

I started singing in Puerto Rico at the age of 6 but it wasn't until 2007 when I really entered the industry with my first album "Temperature of my Life" followed by my second album in 2009 "So Alive." Here we are in 2013 with "Heaven" where sky is no limit.

Was it innate in you?

Its natural to me, it always has been. I remember my first show and how I knew singing was what I wanted to do when I grew up. Then fears of failure installed by those closest to me, kept me from giving my all and soaring.

How would you describe your look?

The look is something that changes or molds from the inside out. It should be the expression of the soul. At the same time, that expression is fed by the outside world and the experiences one decides to be involved in. My look I suppose is modern, urban, fashionable yet eclectic.

How do you plan a photo shoot?

Working with Peter Chin was delightful, he

is very talented! I do get inspired by photos or paintings that I find interesting but might not recall names. Its funny how one form of art inspires another.

Beauty advice:

Dwell in laughter and peaceful moments, it does wonders to the appearance. I also scrub my body regularly with "Nubian Heritage Honey & Black Seed Soap" to promote cell regeneration. Now a TV presenter, she has consolidated a strong modeling career worldwide and has settled in Miami, with his young daughter Mikaela. Both Fonsi and Lopez are happy parents. “When I moved to Miami almost four years ago, it was the best decision of my life. Here I was able to expand my career as an international model and currently I participate in my own tv show “Mami al Rescate”, broadcasted through Despierta America” said Lopez.

For her beauty routine, she takes some simple steps: “I like to go to sleep without any make up, I also apply sunscreen in the morning. As a mom, I take the opportunity to go to sleep as much as I can, which can be kind of difficult at times. I’ve always practiced yoga, which also changed my life and is a must in my beauty routine”.

In her future projects she expects to launch a clothing line for children, continue participating in her “Despierta America” segment and modeling which is her passion.

n our new section dedicated to stylish children, we present a truly unique event that took place in the Summer and Early Fall of 2013 at Governor’s Island. The event’s title is Fête Paradiso, and it consisted of the the world's first festival of vintage French carnival rides and carousels.

The rare, museum-quality collection, which includes a diverse array of attractions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as carousels, flying swings, carnival games and a pipe organ,opened in Labor Day and proved a huge success with families from New York who flocked to this event for entertainment and a new experience.

came to the City that Never Sleeps thanks to producers Tristan Duval and Chris Wangro from Zaragunda Inc. Among the classic attractions, which come from the collections of Francis Staub and Regis Masclet, is a bicycle carousel from the late 19th century, one of only two in the world that were created in Paris to encourage the use of what was then the new mode of transportation - the bicycle. (The only other bicycle carousel can be seen in the feature film Midnight in Paris.)

Fête Paradiso also included an early 20th century Music-Hall Guzzler, a carnival game that features life-size caricatures of Josephine Baker, Maurice Chevalier, Charlie Chaplin, the Fretellini Brothers and other celebrities of the time.

Time-Space Travel with Shen Yun’s Performance

T

here are rare moments in history when a show, a book, or a piece of art takes its viewer to a whole new realm. Boundaries previously thought unmovable, like those between the stage and the backdrop, are erased and reinvented, never to be the same.

Watching Shen Yun Performing Arts is witnessing just such a moment. And when Shen Yun arrives at Lincoln Center in January for a 10-show run, its newest innovations will be on full display. For alongside its talent-laden cast of dancers and musicians, Shen Yun’s ingenious animated backdrops are leaving the entertainment industry astounded.

“Going to the theater and the movies at the same time,” is how Robert Stromberg, Academy Award-winning production designer for Avatar, described it. “It was so inspiring, I think I may have found some new ideas for the next Avatar.”

What Shen Yun’s projection designs do is seamlessly synchronize all aspects of the performance. The costumes’ colors, specific dance movements, drums, lighting, particular notes played by the orchestra—are all timed with animated movements on an enormous digital backdrop.

Buddhist superhero from ancient China, soars through the air with exquisite dexterity, gracefully delivering kicks and twirls of his staff to his enemies. As the enchanting scene continues, the Monkey King literally pulls the moon down from the sky onto the stage.

In several other dances, celestial fairies and divine beings descend to Earth, magically transitioning from digital backdrop figures into flesh and blood on stage. The effect is like a beautiful painting coming to life.

An Epic Journey

China is one of the world’s most ancient civilizations, at about 5,000 years. Its rich dynastic history, majestic landscapes, and diverse ethnic groups become destinations on Shen Yun’s epic journey through time and space. The backdrop takes you there, from the snowcapped Himalayan peaks to the subtropical forests of Southwest China; from the tranquil Yangtze River Delta to the flaming beacon towers along the winding Great Wall; and from the boundless Mongolian grasslands to heavenly scenes of gods and deities.

“It creates a unique atmosphere and a beautiful, colorful world,” said Masahide Yana-

gawase, one of Japan’s foremost visual-effects artists. “The unfolding of the plots and the ways of expressing stories are very attractive.

It’s a precious event.”

As with all aspects of the Shen Yun production, there is a superior level of attention paid to authenticity. A scholarly discourse on the company’s website reflects on the details of the landscapes in the backdrops. “The gardens of Jiangnan are exquisite and enchanting, giving the feeling of meditative seclusion. Indeed, it is a place historically renowned as a cultural and literary center,” it reads. “And yet the winding river with small houses along the banks, seeming to emerge from an ink-wash painting, creates a charming picture of simple, bucolic river life.”

And the effect is mesmerizing. Just as Shen Yun’s website says: “Here, one can get lost in thought. Here, time slows down. Why would you ever want to leave?” Indeed, why would one want to leave this incredible performance?

Only because the usher tells you that the show is over, and he needs to turn off the lights.
