A letter from the editor
What a year 2020 has been? No one expected the world changing as it did last year. Are we ready to receive 2021? Of course, we are. We have had ups and downs; fear has taken ahold of our safety net and we had to rethink our entire lives. Creative people were put on hold, but this moment of pause served a greater purpose, reflection on our duties and what we needed to change to adapt.
Do we need to rethink our approach on food, life, and our daily routines? Definitely. In this issue we had the opportunity to create a wonderful photo shoot with the celebrated chef Todd English. He lives in Vegas but flew to NYC in the summer to be able to do this. We had a wonderful time and we got to know the chef a little bit more. His pursuits on global branding, his desire to help people also impressed us.

Also special thanks to Braman’s GM Mike Rodriguez for allowing us to do photo sessions at Braman in Miami. This was the year we also thought about the children in the world. In 2019, thanks to power players in Miami like Raul Alarcon, Oscar Haza, Tomasito Regalado, Cheryl Womack, and Manuel Herrero (my dad), we were able to raise money for UNICEF and the Children of Venezuela. It felt incredible. This year we are fundraising for the Polo School. The celebrated chef Todd English will host a special dinner aptly titled: “Polo Under the Stars”. It will be an interesting year for creative people, and we are sure to welcome 2021 with open arms.

Priscilla Rattazzi was born in Rome, Italy and came to the United States in the early seventies. She studied photography at Sarah Lawrence College, and later worked as an assistant to photographer Hiro. Throughout the eighties, Priscilla worked as a fashion and portrait photographer in New York. Her work appeared in Brides, Self, Redbook, New York and The New York Times Magazine. In Italy, her work appeared in Vogue Italia, Donna and Amica.

As much as any other artist whose work takes on denial and neglect, David Wojnarowicz used his unique skills as a writer, painter, and thinker to give voice to queer rights at a critical time in U.S. history. In this collage-like yet incisive exploration of his life, Chris McKim deftly mixes his paintings, photos, films, old answering-machine messages, and recorded conversations with recollections from friends, relatives, curators, critics, colleagues, and siblings. McKim traces Wojnarowicz’s life, from his toxic New Jersey upbringing to his “making it” in the New York art scene, and beyond. As New York City became the epicenter of the AIDS crisis, Wojnarowicz's art became angrier and more outspoken, and his powerful, unapologetic way of seeing the world made an impact that greatly contributed toward gay rights. Wojnarowicz, a victim of AIDS, passed away in 1992 at age 37, but as this film attests, his uncompromising work and attitude still carry great relevance.

Modern Philanthropist and Fashion Icon takes on a New Venture - a TV Show!

Style Icon and philanthropist Jean Shafiroff has taken on a new role, this time as producer and host of a dynamic television show highlighting the work of actors, artists, heads of charities and even a US presidential candidate.
The weekly show, “Successful Philanthropy,” airs four times each week on LTV in East Hampton and is also available on their YouTube channel as well as on Jean Shafiroff’s YouTube channel. The show also airs in New York City each Friday night at 8:30PM on Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) TV: Spectrum Channels 34 and 1995, Verizon/FiOS 33 and RCNchannel 82. In January 2021, it is slated to open in additional markets .
It’s an exciting venture for Jean. “I’ve always loved the idea of hosting a TV show and when the pandemic came along, the timing especially seemed right for a program about philanthropy,” she says. The people I have met and the work they do is fascinating. My show is designed to motivate others - and also to create a little buzz and news!”

Like a budding Kelly Ripa, Jean strives to bring a wide variety of intriguing personalities to viewers, reflecting her personality, her interest in people and hearing their stories, and her love of helping others.
Independent-party presidential candidate Brock Pierce, an entrepreneur, cryptocurrency pioneer, and philanthropist, has been a guest. Supermodel Carol Alt has taped an episode and Dan Gasby, widower of the beloved restaurateur B. Smith, stirred up a flurry of press attention when he revealed on the show that he had broken off his relationship with ex-girlfriend Alex Lerner.
Emmy-nominated “ER” star Gloria Reuben is set to appear in January. Human rights activist Kerry Kennedy did a zoom interview to talk about this year’s Robert F. Kennedy Human Right’s “Ripple of Hope Awards”, which took place in December and whose honorees included Dr. Anthony Fauci and Colin Kaepernick, among others. Many CEOs of local, national and international charities have also appeared on the show.
“The television series is giving me a new platform for sure,” says Jean, known as the first lady of philanthropy, “but it also gives those I bring on the show an entirely new platform that maybe they don’t have. It’s meant to be uplifting.”

appeared often as a guest on television programs around the country, talking about philanthropy and how people can get involved. At the start of the pandemic, she made numerous television and radio appearances to advocate on behalf of food pantries, racial justice and animal welfare on national TV networks including Fox, NBC, CBS, WGN in Chicago and NY1 in New York.
In the early days of the coronavirus, she also went on the air to quell rumors that animals can transmit Covid to humans (so far there has not been one reported case in the U.S.) and addressed one happy result of the pandemic, the fact that pet adoptions are up as people nationwide shelter at home.
Jean promoted her 2016 book, “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give,” with a two-part national tour with local TV news appearances in almost every market in the United States, hitting multiple cities in each state from California to Utah to Illinois to Texas to Florida.
Collector, fashion lover
Jean and her husband Martin do collect art, and in addition, Jean, known for her iconic sense of style and often appearing on best-dressed lists, has built a serious collection of ballgowns, her signature look. She loves to have fun with couture, but she is a passionate, knowledgeable fashion lover, and has amassed an assortment of more than 250 gowns over the past thirty years.
She considers evening wear to be the pinnacle of a designer’s artistic expression. “I think personally the ballgowns are the most exciting; they give a designer the most opportunity to
show their creativity versus daytime clothing,” says Jean. “My particular focus has been on gowns, straight and big ballgowns, by primarily American designers.”
With an eye toward donating them to a museum in the future, these pieces are being professionally catalogued by a company called Clio Archivists, founded by Lilah Ramzi, a features editor at Vogue magazine, and Natalie Nudell, a fashion historian and instructor at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
While New York Fashion Week was mainly virtual during the pandemic, in September Jean was invited as guest of honor and emcee for Times Square Fashion Week, one of the only live events to take place this season. Times Square was shut down for the event where models showed the looks from seven designers for the press, and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer spoke to a crowd of fewer than 50.

Television is not the only platform that Jean has embraced to bring attention to the philanthropic causes that she champions. She also writes about the topic for various publications, and serves on the boards of many charitable organizations, including the New York City Mission Society, the French Heritage Society, the Couture Council of the Museum at FIT, the Southampton Hospital Association, the Honorary Board of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation and Global Strays, an animal welfare nonprofit founded by her daughter. A Catholic, Jean served as a trustee for the Jewish Board for 28 years and is now one of a few honorary trustees. She earned an MBA from Columbia

University, and is a past board member of the New York Women’s Foundation and remains very active in the organization.
For her philanthropy, Jean has been honored many times-including by groups such the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, New York City Mission Society, Southampton Animal Shelter, Surgeons of Hope, Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, the Ellen Hermanson Foundation the Jewish Board and the Hadassah. And that’s just dipping your toes into her extensive CV.
Social media is another way that Jean communicates, promoting not only charities, but sending positive messages, trying to lift the spirits of her 690,000+ Instagram followers, and also encouraging safety during the pandemic. “I try to remind people to keep wearing their masks, to keep social distancing, and to keep washing their hands. It’s not over.”
Virtual galas and more
“I love doing the TV show, but of course I continue with my philanthropic work,” says Jean, whose activities now include plenty of Zoom meetings and hosting fundraisers.
This fall, she chaired or co-chaired virtual galas for the Dominican Women’s Development Center, the New York Women’s Foundation, the French Heritage Society, and Surgeons of Hope.
During the summer and early fall, Jean hosted numerous intimate outdoor fundraising gatherings, with social distancing and no more than 50 people, for organizations including the Southampton Animal Shelter, the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and the American Humane Society, as well as dinners in the backyard of her Southampton home. All were in conformance with New York State guidelines for entertaining during the pandemic.
“It’s different. Almost all fundraising charity galas are now virtual. We continue to raise money, it’s just in a whole new way,” she says. And priorities have shifted in some cases. For the New York City Mission Society, which serves New York’s most underserved people, we’ve created utility bags that include food, cleaning supplies for the home and essentials like Pampers for those with babies. “During this terrible pandemic, when people are out of work, we’re supplying goods to them.”
Jean has also refocused some of her donations to the Covid-19 funds of several charities in light of the critical needs stemming from the pandemic, including hunger and animal welfare, as Americans suffer widespread illness and unemployment due to the coronavirus. She and her husband, Martin, funded 10,000 meals for the Heart of the Hamptons food pantry.
“This is a year of tremendous transition for everyone,” says Jean. “I’m very impressed by how supportive people are during the pandemic, because the needs are enormous. We have to win the battle against this pandemic.”
Humane Society Feed the Hungry spokesperson
A longtime animal welfare advocate, Jean was recently appointed National Spokesperson for the American Humane Society’s Feed the Hungry Covid-19 program, which gives grants earmarked for food to animal shelters
across the United States as funding has plummeted amidst the coronavirus. “Animals in shelters are not getting enough food, and these shelters are in trouble financially with the pandemic. People don’t have jobs, or their income has dropped dramatically, they’re not giving as much, or people change their focus and start giving to different things, like hospitals,” Jean explains. They have so far raised $650,000 and hope to reach $1,000,000 by the end of the year.
Outlook for the future
Jean states that the global health crisis has only deepened her commitment to philanthropy. “My life has changed drastically and so have the lives of almost all individuals. We must continue to work hard to help one another. Looking forward, I am optimistic and believe New York will come back. Even though life has changed, I am grateful to be able to continue to work towards building a more equitable world.”

Living in the Hamptons for several years, Ian Duke has had quite an impact on Southampton’s social and culinary scene. With seven unique concepts under his belt, if you ask him, he’s just getting started ….. Even with more potential shutdowns in sight, nothing will curb the optimism of Duke who without a shadow of a doubt, believes that the best is yet to come. “The pandemic has done irrevocable damage to our industry. One thing I will say though is that ours is a business where you never know what’s going to happen. Everyday something breaks or goes awry. That is every day in a restaurant, aside from the pandemic. So, with that said, restaurants are perhaps as well-suited as anyone to handle the challenges of running a business that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented. We
have all spent a career pivoting, and we will continue to do so as long as is necessary,” said Duke who owns several restaurants in the Hamptons and Manhattan.
During the pandemic alone, Duke and his team have launched the award-winning Union Sushi and Steak in Southampton, the smash hit outdoor restaurant The Baylander (built on an actual aircraft carrier) on Manhattan’s upper west side. These to accompany the team’s other establishments: Southampton Social Club, Lucky’s Famous Burgers, Prohibition Live Music Bar and Union Burger Bar. BUT wait – there’s more!
The group is opening a new take out / food pick up concept in Southampton called The Coop on December 1st. Union Sushi and Steak will be transforming into a dining gallery starting December 10th when they partner with Alysha Markos of UEast75 gallery for a month long art show entitled “Musing and Mastering The Ordinary” featuring a slew of talented South American and Cuban artists.
Finally, I asked Duke who is approaching his 50th birthday in a matter of weeks what was next on the docket for him and his team else he simply said, “I think I’d like to do a hotel……I think that could be some fun.” Fun indeed.
New York commercial landlords are seizing a unique opportunity to make a difference. By 2024, most buildings larger than 25,000 square feet – some 50,000 buildings across the city -- will need to drastically cut emissions to comply with NYC’s building emissions law, Local Law 97 of 2019. By 2050, those caps on carbon emissions will force building owners to reduce emissions by 80. That’s a tall order, especially during a global pandemic that has been felt acutely by commercial building owners. But wit most workers having yet to return to the office, some landlords are using this unprecedented moment to start working on their buildings, with the goal of meeting these stringent new standards years ahead of schedule. In Noho, Renaissance Properties is leading the charge. “The question is how do we get people to invest now, in the middle of a crisis, in sustainable practices,” said Bradley Fishel, Vice President of Renaissance Properties and Chairman of the Board Noho Business Improvement District. “The new climate act for New York City means that building owners are going to have to meet sustainability standards in the coming years anyway. So, we are pressuring buildings ownersin the Noho BID to meet those 2024 standards before any other neighborhood in Manhattan.”
Renaissance Properties – whose portfolio includes 632 Broadway, 627 Broadway, and 264 West 40th Street – has already made the city’s recommended changes as of two years ago, Fishel said. For instance, at 632 Broadway -- a landmarked Classical Revival mercantile building designed by Robert Maynicke and built in 1897 – the family company led by President Kenneth Fishel replaced all lights with LEDS, switched to solar energy utility credits, installed touchless faucets and touchless light switches, updated all HVAC units to VRF systems, replaced all windows and conver-
ted the buildings from heating oil to natural gas. They also added the Merv 13 air filtration to the building in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Equestrian Rising Star in Wellington is taking the World of Show Jumping to another level.

Lesly Moore is one of those young heroes in the Equestrian World. Her determination and passion for riding horses is something you witnessed on very few occasions. As I saw her in Wellington, bringing her pony, I knew she was something special. Moore is only 11 years old. She has been riding for the last few years in the Equestrian Capital of the World, and she also attends shows around the country.
As the photographs in this article can show, Moore was being photographed by the master artist David Erdek in Kentucky. Her elegance as a young lady that comes from town nearby to Wellington, Palm Beach, can be perceived in each shot. “I really loved doing that. I love my pony….,” said Moore while we interviewed her next to two of her favorite people, her trainer Nadine Higley, and her nanny since she was an infant, Reina.
“She will be a big star. What I have seen in Lesly is not something that you come across everyday.
Her determination to win, her discipline to practice almost every day, it’s something that I’ve seen a few times in my lifetime, and I’ve worked in Wellington for decades,” explained Higley, while overseeing a grueling routine of jumping, jumping and more jumping.
Show jumpers are considered the most elegant of all the equine sports. You need to be good at the technique plus it comes with a certain style. The clothes you wear, how polished your horse looks, and well, succeeding in the ring comes as a package of constant practice, discipline, and determination.
“I love riding horses, I started just before I met Nadine,” said the young equestrian lady who spends every single day of the week (except Mondays), training. “We connected instantly. She has got something that other people do not have. Talent. You can have passion, but maybe lack the talent. She has both,” admits Higley. Both have traveled the circuit in the last two

“She did very well during the Pony Finals! She was going to showcase her talent again this year, but due to covid we had to cancel. Lesly is already qualified for 2021. She is also competing at Global Dressage in Wellington and has acquired her first jumper,” mentioned Higley.
Moore is happy as a daisy when it comes to the sport. She loves her ponies. “She can ride, it’s not about age, it’s about ability. She is there now,” admitted her trainer while looking in admiration at that angelic face. Strong, powerful, and young, but with a great determination to succeed.
“The common denominator with all these disciplines, polo, dressage, three-day eventing and show jumping is the horse. Striving for the perfect moment to succeed, only a few riders and horse breeders get to make it to the top. It takes a village to achieve great success. Here, Lesly’s mother and grandmother, Danielle Moore Town of Palm Beach Council Member and Lesly Smith, a former mayor of Palm Beach, are one of those families that make it happen. They support Lesly unconditionally. If all the elements are aligned, then you have a rising star,” said Higley.

Talks to us About His Book Once Upon a Diamond

I interviewed Dimitri on a cold rainy day in his Manhattan home but all of that is forgotten when we start talking about his book Once Upon A Diamond published by Rizzoli. It is beautiful and very interesting, I would say, a unique creation that has acquired a lot of attention in Manhattan and elsewhere. It really makes you curious about those days.
There is a picture in your book of you, as a small child, pointing at a jewel that Queen Elisabeth of Belgium is wearing Yes! I always had this sort of chemistry and affinity with stones, jewels, gemology...my mother had a very beautiful emerald ring that I always liked, a big cabochon… and my grandmother too and I loved them.
How does it feel to see that many of these beautiful pieces have disappeared or have been sold? It is a bit sad, but thank God that I believe in reincarnation! I believe that we truly learn the lessons of this life. Everything that happens to you is for an evolutionary purpose, the purpose of the enlargement of your soul, so I have this ability to put the things in a different perspective...more acceptable. You know, this time I am a Prince, maybe the time before I was a soldier who died in a battle.
But you do not remember! It doesn’t really matter! No, no, it doesn’t really matter...but if you believe in it, it gives you a different perspective, it makes things easier to deal with them. It is a sort of wisdom that gives you an acceptance, a detachment from things...I tend to get less upset by things that might affect me. People who believe in reincarnation get less upset about things in life than people who don’t.
But next time might be better or worse! Yes. It is karma.
When did you decide to create this book? Well, I did not decide! It was Rizzoli! They had seen all my posts in Instagram ...a lot of people had already started suggesting that I write a book ..then this lady from Rizzoli, during a dinner three years ago, proposed presenting the idea to her publisher...and this was the result! I selected the best stories. I had to limit them, because otherwise it would have been a thousand pages.... maybe I’ll do another one later.
When did you decide that you were going to dedicate your life to jewelry? How did it happen? First, I went to work for Sotheby’s after I finished Law school. I was in the Jewelry Department and stayed there for 20 years and really liked it. It happened because a friend of mine had a pair of cufflinks that needed to be redesigned. Beautiful stones from Brazil but they needed a different mounting because it was too thick. I thought they needed to have an invisible mounting and I had the idea of drilling holes in it and the result was to put the stones in the center with nothing around them , it was very light, like floating.. After that I did earrings, bracelets, and a whole collection. It is very minimalist.

Aman that has revolutionized the culinary industry: Todd English has introduced new ways to interact with food from fusing entertainment and his upscale dishes to transporting viewers across the world on his travel food series. “It is truly the democratic way to interact in the world. Humans depend on food. Food defines us,” says the internationally-acclaimed chef. English’s ascent to culinary stardom began when he won his first award in 1991 as the ‘Rising Star of the Year,’ from the James Beard Foundation. By 1994, he had won the award for Best Chefs in America and in 2001, his commercial success was immortalized in print by being named one of the Most Beautiful People in People Magazine. While flattered his reaction was humble, “I was in disbelief. I thought I was being pranked!”. The Chef has opened the “Todd English Food Hall” in The Plaza Hotel in New York City, Dubai, and Manila. Simultaneously, English has extended another location of his first ever restaurant Olives in Abu Dhabi at the Ritz Carlton. When asked about the future of food and dining, English candidly admits he feels immense pressure, “We have adapted to safety measures and still the largest employer of people in the country is under siege. It is concerning. There are many aspects of the food world that are broken. As a professional chef who has been in the business for a long time, I continue to feel a great responsibility to improve the quality of food and the way it is being provided to the public. However, there are so many lessons to be learned because of this year. Something amazing that can come out of this is an incentive to focus on our health through the food we eat, and I look forward to continuing to be involved in communicating this to the world.” Optimistic about the future, English continues to explore beyond his culinary universe.

Dana Bronfman is not only an innovative jeweler, but she is also the Chair of the Junior Advisory Board of Publicolor, a NYC 501 (c)(3) that helps underprivileged children gain traction in their education in the public school system.
Following her late grandfather’s (Sam Bronfman) mission to help the less fortunate, Bronfman continues the legacy of providing support and change people’s lives one day at a time. The long-term youth development program engages high risk students in their education throughout the year. On many occasions, Bronfman donates her own pieces to help fundraise for their gala and fundraising events.
“This year due to covid, it was a little different, but it always works. The undertaking is so positive, you see the colors that are done in these murals throughout the schools, it just lightens up their lives,” said Bronfman who resides in Manhattan after living on the West Coast for decades. Her upbringing also entailed living in San Francisco where she started at an early age being engaged in charity activities.
Now at the helm of a new generation of philanthropists, Bronfman is a fervent admirer of Publicolor’s mission. Most recently, the famous artist Carmen Herrera designed a mural for the non-profit in Manhattan. The founder of the non-profit, Ruth Lande Shuman who is an award-winning industrial designer, is someone close to Bronfman. “She has this knowledge on the psychology effect of color, it is fascinating. This is all thanks to her post-graduate studies, but I have learned the impact it has on children. It is extremely rewarding to see them having better school scores and graduating as well,” said the young philanthropist who has a very promising role in changing the world.

What made you join Lang Lang International Foundation? A few years ago, I met Lukas Barwinski-Brown, the CEO of the foundation who introduced me to Lang Lang. Lang Lang’s energy and enthusiasm about his foundation motivated me to look into their mission and programs.
Lang Lang just mentioned that Bach can help us during this global crisis - what are your thoughts about this? Music heals, inspires, and make us better people. Bach is like the foundation of every kind of music. Music could not be in present form without Bach.
How have you changed the children’s’ lives?
I am changing children lives almost every day by supporting and being involved in our educational Keys of Inspiration program. We strive to change the way music education is perceived in the public-school system. With Keys of Inspiration®️, we have established a replicable pathway into the world of music for grades 2-5. Keys of Inspiration®️ is a music intervention program, focusing on selected schools nationwide with limited resources.
The biggest difference between us and hundreds other foundations is, that this program is in the curriculum of every of the 60 public schools across the country. Already more than
25,000 students are learning in our piano labs every day. Focus on the education and health of children. Project Rousseau, which is a charity that focuses on the truly most underprivileged.
What other organizations are you involved in?
I am also involved in two charities that help children, such as former sex slaves and child soldiers. At Project Rousseau we help them achieve opportunities and gain access to the most elite boarding schools and Universities in the world. Another child focused charity I am involved with is LifeLine NY, which is Headed by HRH Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia. This charity focuses on bringing much needed medical equipment to the war-torn regions of former Yugoslavia..
Who instilled in you good values? My mother was a Social worker and later a president of a social worker union is upstate NY and a Eucharistic minister in the Roman Catholic Church. She instilled in me the ‘Golden Rule’, that above all to treat people as you wish to be treated yourself. My father instilled in me hard work. To the best of my memories I do not think my father ever missed a day of work in his entire life. That fact made the limited time we had together very precious and special to me. This made me learn to appreciate the things that matter most, quality over quantity.

From a top law firm, to being at the helm of a biotech company, Anthony Hayes talks philanthropy with a hands-on approach that is unusual. His demeanor seems to be of a responsible adult who just wants to make the world better.
“It all started after 9-11. When I watched the towers fall, I was devastated. Those were the towers where I used to work. I had to do something, but I could not dig through rubble. So I thought about what skills I had and realized I could use my law degree to help. My colleagues and I modified a computer program the firm had on our system to provide estate planning documents. Then we loaded that program onto laptops, borrowed a firm printer, and went to our local fire station by November of 2001. And with that, the Wills for Heroes Program was born. Wills for Heroes (www.willsforheroes.org) provides free estate planning documents to first responders and eventually became a national non-profit. The program operates in over a dozen states and has provided free estate planning documents to hundreds of thousands of first responders, ” recounts Hayes from his home in Virginia.
The philanthropist has always been an engaged individual whose main goal is to help people. In all the mayhem of reconstructing major business deals, purchasing companies and restructuring big operations and what comes attached to these complex maneuverings, Hayes manages his time to deliver a knockout approach when it comes to help out the less fortunate. “As much of a cliché as it sounds, we should deliver help to those who need it. If it weren’t for my education and upbringing, I would not be where I am now. So I need to pay it forward and help others. Plus, the satisfaction it brings you is priceless.”
The lawyer, now the CEO of Aikido Pharma, is a busy lad. He travels between cities, but rest assured his main goal is to bring a loving and safe environment for his two sons. “Juggling a life that is quite busy and raising my sons Oliver and Elliot, is a major accomplishment for me. I’ve lived in many places in the country, and now have sown roots in Virginia where I oversee Aikido Pharma.”

Another initiative Hayes is involved in is the Serbian Mission. “In New York City, my friend Kyle Wool, introduced me to HRH Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia. The Princess runs LifelineNY, a foundation that strives to help mothers and children from Serbia to have a better life. Her discovery and passion on this mission comes from the fact that many children in Serbia are deemed deaf when they are born. However, there is a medical equipment that can change that and early detection of the condition can potentially create a different outcome. So how can you not support that? Moreover, an Aikido Pharma employee and longtime friend has a daughter that was born deaf. So it seemed like fate to get involved and help other children.”
Aikido pharma was initially formed in 1967 and is a biotechnology company with a diverse portfolio of small- molecule anti-cancer therapeutics. How would you describe the Hamptons to any reader?
The Hamptons is a unique community. A weekend in the Hamptons can be a relaxed secluded getaway where you can enjoy nature and the beauty of the sprawling beaches and lush greenery. Or it can be an extravagant rosé-inspired social affair with posh dining, polo matches, and vibrant nightlife. As a local business owner, I enjoy both experiences here but mostly I enjoy the small-town feel of community and camaraderie.

Why did you select the name Capri? The hotel was already named Capri when we purchased it in 2015. We decided not to change the name because, like the island in Italy, Capri evokes ideas about a European summer vacation which perfectly encapsulates the vibe of the hotel.
What is the biggest challenge of owning the Capri hotel? The biggest challenge of owning the Capri is that it is seasonal, like most other hotels in the Hamptons. Thus, in addition to the usual challenges any hotel business has, there are unique operational challenges such as hiring a great team and finding affordable staff housing. But in light of the pandemic, the Hamptons are becoming more of a year-round destination so we are currently making some changes to the property to allow us to remain open all year.
Where are you planning to expand next?
We have a lot of interest in Miami and Palm Beach so I think a hotel in Florida will be next!
How do you describe your style? I would describe my style as versatile. For business I like to keep things classic and elegant. When dressing more casually, I’m most comfortable in summer dresses and sandals or skinny jeans and booties.
Favorite shops in NYC and around the globe?
I think the right accessories can make any outfitlook chic. A few of my favorites are Aquazzura and Gianvito Rossi for shoes, and Celine and Chloé for bags.

Can you tell me about your start at Braman and what does Braman represent for you? KKarin is a strong young philanthropist who’s had a long-standing career in the charity world. Her mission rests in the quest for a better world. “I always teach my children, Carlos Eduardo and Cassandra Angelie, that from every dollar we earn, we have to give a percentage to the less fortunate, as well as volunteer our time.” Solidarity, braveness, and a vision has determined the long path of a multi-generational family of philanthropists that Figueroa Cisneros comes from.
Which delves into her other hobbies. “Yes, I always wanted to be a jumper. Now is the time I have taken the initiative and get into this equestrian practice. I also do Paso Fino riding, but started jumping training at a farm in Kendall.
As part of the Polo Committee Initiative to promote the “Sport of Kings” in Miami, Figueroa Cisneros feels it is a new challenge in her life. “People need to know many Latin American families have shaped the world in a positive way. My uncle Oswaldo Cisneros, whom I had been very close with, taught others and myself how to give, in a quiet and elegant manner, but with a true and definitive purpose. Bottom line: to help.”
Figueroa Cisneros has raised money and provided her time to: Jackson Memorial Golden Angles Foundation, The Buoniconti Foundation, The Tiffany Circle of the Red Cross, Miami Children’s Hospital, now known as the Nicklaus Children’s Foundation and is a member of the Young Patrons of the Opera and Breakthrough Miami. She is also an entrepreneur. In the past she created a commercial product, Don Picante, sold in 54 Publix supermarkets and now is a founding member of a new telecommunications company, a start up she is working on called EZLlama an innovative application aiming at connecting families in Colombia and Venezuela through a novel idea.
“By getting a local phone number, families can call each other as if they were in their respective countries,” mentioned the philanthropist and entrepreneur who now resides in Miami with her two children.

What do you do for the FIU Foundation?
I am the Associate Director for the Development Office for Student Success within the FIU Foundation, and I raise funds for student success.
I love working at the FIU Foundation and it is truly the best workplace I have worked at. I am so passionate about making our students dreams a reality which uplifts our community. There is no better feeling than giving.
How do you continue to grow professionally?
Continuous self-development and constant
learning are key to advancing and exceling. After graduating from an executive leadership development program from FIU’s Center of Leadership, I realized the importance of aligning our values with the institution’s mission and vision and the responsibility to lead and influence others in the process. What is the driving force behind your passion?
Besides my two daughters, it is extremely important to have a clear vision of our values and a very strong why. I believe upward mobility can be achieved through education, by being
a change agent for our international students. Higher Education is the most sustainable and greatest gift that changes lives that change the world.
How do you balance work and personal life?
This is tricky and often an interesting challenge. Being a mother of two teenage girls, I learned that working, being a busy parent, and just trying to do everything right, is almost impossible. I learned to say “no” in my personal life, and to organize my time in a way that allows for self-care, as well as conscious decisions to navigate parenthood with my professional and philanthropic endeavors.

Gabriela Rachadell de Delgado looks out her balcony at the Four Seasons apartment she owns with her husband, Venezuelan businessman Juan Jose Delgado. The power couple call Miami their home after a move from Caracas, Venezuela about ten years ago. “Miami was one of our vacation destinations since childhood, so we decided eventually to move here since we were very familiar with the city,” reveals Gabriela. She also lives part time in Madrid. “Last year we spent five months there,” said the statuesque Gabriela, who holds degrees from Harvard University, Universidad Andres Bello in Venezuela and an MBA from New York University and London School of Economics.
The highly accomplished Gabriela keeps a low demeanor, but her busy office works year-round in the international business transactions that arises through complex negotiations that expands to 4 continents.
“Being a lawyer that specializes in these contract negotiations entails an exceedingly difficult and detailed analysis of the world’s trade in energy and new technologies related to energy. Therefore, I continuously have to study to keep up with new realities and developments,” confessed the Venezuelan philanthropists who also has taught academia in Venezuela.
“Nowadays we need to adapt due to the constant advances in technology and the energy transitions (the change from fossil hydrocarbons to clean energy), we need to adapt to continue servicing our clients, this is a reality we deal with and that we cannot ignore.”
This is a constant in her life, a routine in her household which she solidly tangles with her married life and partner in the office, her husband Juan Jose Delgado. The other side this power couple enjoys immensely is contributing her time and finances to causes that she
is close to. Example given, she is part of the Executive Board at the Boys and Girls Club (became involved 10 years ago), as well as chaired past fundraising events Big Brothers Big Sisters of America which raised more than million dollars in March of 2020. Her commitment to help others, especially children, has always been the core of her kindness and giving. “I started as a young woman in Venezuela and have continued through all my life. Education has always been a part of my professional life, having had a great career enabled me to have a secure and stable life, why not give to others a sense of calm and relief. family- my children and Jorge Luis. I don’t choose between my professional life and my personal family life, but that is a choice I have been privileged to be able to make.”

“For me it is a mixing of flavors, spices and exotic ingredients all while maintaining their original consistency and uniqueness. Miami philanthropy is also incredibly special. It is best known for its kindness to others, more on the one on one principal. People give to people and that is still very true in Miami. Miami is a young city with many immigrants and Hispanics. Many Hispanics mostly give to their place of worship-the Church and to their relatives back “home”; therefore philanthropy –giving to charities has been growing at a steady pace, but only for the past twenty to twenty-five years. Many organizations, such as Chapman Partnership, where I am a board member, is celebrating their 25 years. There is much hope for the next twenty-five years, as Hispanics are moving into this charitable space and donating, volunteering at the same pace as our Anglo neighbors. Miami and the Miami Charities will be positively impacted by this Hispanic kindness soon enough.”

The Philanthropist is a Style Icon in Miami
Jorge Luis and Marile Lopez are a power couple in Miami. Both were born in Cuba and fled Castro’s dictatorship seeking religious freedom, freedom of speech and freedom of choice. “We were both blessed to be raised in a loving, Catholic home. Our immigrant parents’ desire and accomplishments of the American Dream gave us the opportunity to be the professional, philanthropist couple we are today. It was their example and virtues that shaped us,” expressed Lopez from the comfort of her home in Miami. As the stylish woman she is, both her and her husband are also well-respected members of society. Both hold MBAs and Jorge Luis Lopez graduated from the University of Miami
School of Law. “He has been practicing Governmental Affairs for over 30 years and I joined the firm 15 years ago,” explained the beauty surrounded by her daughter Annia and Saramelia.
“In life we are partners in everything. There is no Jorge or Marile-it’s Jorge and Marile…We work together every day. “My grandmother, Carmela was a seamstress in Cuba. Prior to each event, Lopez explains that she organizes her outfits three months in advance. Her personal closet looks like a well-organized room of beautifully kept gowns and cocktail dresses. A: Effortless is what I like. My style reflects my story and things that bring me joy. It is about being true to yourself.

A: It has been four years, in a blink of an eye, and I find magic in this city. Miami has embraced us, and it embodies love and energy. The beauty of the different cultures we are surrounded by, that have a shared value system. To be immersed in it, is beautiful learning and the gift that keeps giving.
Q: How do you feel about the Polo Committee of Miami, to bring back the glamour of polo....
A: Miami is a world class city. Polo has history in Miami and what could be greater than being host and shining the light on the glamour of Polo. Modern Polo originated in India in 1859 when the Silchar Polo club was founded by the British in Manipur, a northeastern state of India. Today, the world’s oldest active club is the Calcutta Polo Club established in 1862. We are reviving its history in Miami!
Q: You design jewelry. Tell me about this, and the other passions in your life.
A: Personally, I am process oriented and find creativity in design enchanting. I am passionate about the process of crafting life and every aspect of it. I design my own jewelry as
it reflects who I am as a woman and I enjoy designing in the home and workspace. Our homes in New York, Philadelphia and Miami have been design builds.
Professionally, I am a clinical psychologist and a researcher at heart. I enjoy the interdisciplinary merge of psychology with other disciplines of life. It is about getting in touch with what speaks to you, influencing thought and recreating your environment, allowing it to serve the best in yourself. We are only limited by our imagination. Psychology influences my work in Education, and Environmental and Conservation psychology is at the forefront of my work in civic engagement.
Q: How do you handle being a mother and a busy businesswoman?
A: Dear sweet unforgettable childhood. It is a delicate balance, isn’t it? The secret is that our children need the quiet support just as much as when they seem like they may not. Allowing and creating space to nourish the self in between the journey of parenthood allows the balance to stay in place. Pause, for immeasurable value. I run early in the morning and that allows me to center my day. I immerse myself in verse and love to read. I love travel and the bohemian side of me and my immersive personality, often allows me to feel like the next place could be home. On the work front, I am engaged with United Way and serve as co-chair of United Way of Miami-Dade Florida’s Education II Impact Council. Our work in School Age Education is at the grassroots level and agencies are vetted for clear outcome measures that indicate change is taking place.
The focus on underserved communities has always been where my heart is, and I see how every effort is created to ensure that we are moving the needle. With my children, Simrin Kesmia and Arhan, the hope is that legacy I leave as a parent. That they understand the courage and value of giving time and encouraging philanthropy to leave the world better than how they found it.
We are longtime supporters of United Way Worldwide and members of its Tocqueville Society, as well as members of Florida Council of 100. I enjoy civic engagement and remain active with private civic organizations.
In Miami I am engaged with urban development issues and actively working with the city and county to restore the historic five-mile Commodore Trail that runs through Coconut Grove and Coral Gables. In Philadephia, I serve on the Board of Historic Philadelphia.

A FILM ABOUT ARTIST URSULA RYDINGSVARD

“Into her own” is a film by Daniel Traub based on the legacy of one of the best contemporary artists, Ursula Von Rydingsvard. Her expressive cedar sculptures combines traces of a long and distant peasant past evocative and fueled by a remembrance of her childhood, one that was filled of a complexity and chaotic nature due to the forced labor her parents endured in the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. The basic organic materials symbolize humility while the vast sizes of grandeur are shaped by the monumental sculptures she creates. A symbiotic relationship between past and present. The German born artist (b. 1942), who descends from Ukrainian and Polish parents, belongs to more than 30 museum collections around the world. One of her first solo exhibits was titled “Interior Ursula”. In this particular manifest, Von Rydingsvard was inspired by a line from Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem: “Fourth Duno Elegy”: “We don’t know the contour of our feeling, only the thing that molds it from without.” Do not miss this film…watch it on Vimeo or Amazon.

An outdoor pulpit and Spanish sanctuary sconces
Designed by Kiehnel and Elliott [the firm also designed Coral Gables Elementary School] and patterned after a cathedral in Mexico, it was the first church built in the city. It was dedicated on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1925 and included an outdoor pulpit. George Merrick, whose father was a Congregational minister, donated land for the church and dedicated the building to him. He and his wife also donated the Spanish sanctuary sconces. The church’s interior—with polychrome beams and massive chandeliers—is the best remaining example of pristine Coral Gables style.

MIAMI BALTIMORE COUNTRY CLUB
This structure will remain a thing of lasting beauty
The 1926 Biltmore is of Spanish style with Moorish and Italian accents considered “Mediterranean Revival”. Designed by internationally known architects Schultze and Weaver, The Miami Biltmore is designated a National Historic Landmark. The 26-story tower is a replica of the Giralda Tower of Spain. Schultze and Weaver also designed New York’s Pierre and Waldorf-Astoria Hotels, Palm Beach’s Breakers, and Miami’s Freedom Tower. For the opening, Venetian gondolas traveled from the hotel through the Coral Gables Waterway to Tahiti Beach (now Cocoplum). Guests also enjoyed a polo field, two golf courses, tennis courts, a bridle path, fox hunting and a gigantic pool. After a preservation battle, the city acquired the building under the Historic Monument Act of 1972. In 1985, the city signed a 99-year lease for renovation and management of the structure as a 286-room luxury hotel and office complex.In 1996, the National Register of Historic Places designated The Biltmore a National Historic Landmark, an elite title offered to only 3 percent of all historic structures.
VENETIAN POOL First Opera at the Venetian Pool in 1926 with a Cost of $1 Million
The Venetian Pool was opened in 1924 as the “Venetian Casino,” which was part of the Grand Plan George Merrick had for the City of Coral Gables. Completed in 1925 it was designed by Phineas Paist with Denman Fink.
Originally serving as a rock quarry pit from which the oolitic limestone used in many of Coral Gables earliest buildings, its construction it was dubbed “the world’s most beautiful swimming hole.” It is the municipal swimming pool of the City and resembles a Venetian lagoon featuring a tall limerock outcropping, a waterfall, Venetian posts, and a small island connected to the Casino by a Venetian bridge. In the early days, George Merrick used the pool as his sales center and hired renowned orator, William Jennings Bryan, to extol the virtues of Coral Gables to willing customers.
The first national opera troupe performance in Miami was in the drained Venetian Pool on February 2, 1926. The million-dollar production had a cast of 30 singers and 28 ballet dancers who arrived on three special trains. The opera was sponsored by the developers of Coral Gables and Miami Shores.
A year earlier, in 1925, the celebrated Paul Whiteman Orchestra played in a drained Venetian Pool to help George Merrick promote sales in Coral Gables.
The local landmark is the only pool included in the National Register of Historic Places.
DESOTO PLAZA AND FOUNTAIN
An obelisk and four relief carvings make up stone fountain known as De Soto.
The City Beautiful Movement encouraged the use of wide tree-lined avenues, monumental buildings, winding roadways, green space, ornate plazas and fountains galore. All these elements of style have been and continue to be incorporated by Coral Gables city planners. Out of 14 planned plazas, only six were built by 1923. The Desoto Plaza and Fountain was built a few years later in 1925. It is named after Hernando de Soto, a Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first European expedition to the United States. It is located in close proximity to the historic Venetian Pool at the intersection of Sevilla Avenue, and Granada and DeSoto Boulevards. The location is one of the City of Coral Gables original traffic circles.
The pedestal fountain is in a neo-baroque French architectural style of the late 19th century. It was designed by Denman Fink, the uncle of Coral Gables founder George Merrick. Fink designed all of the original entrances to Coral Gables, the original water tower in the shape of a light house, and Coral Gables city hall. The stone fountain supports an obelisk and features four relief carvings of faces containing water jets. At night, vintage lanterns light the fountain.

She was instrumental in acquiring funds from the City of Coral Gables to restore the historic 1926 White Way Lights; recently spearheaded a campaign to halt the demolition of a Coral Gables landmark and is currently working on raising awareness to save the only Brutalist-style government building in Coral Gables. She is also campaigning to historically designate the last remaining Cold War bunker in South Florida.
Dr. Karelia Martinez Carbonell is an independent fundraising and communications consultant after many years employed in the not-for-profit sector. Dr. Martinez Carbonell has been a leader on numerous nonprofit boards of directors. She is past executive board member of the Coral Gables Community Foundation; longtime board member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Miami Chapter;past president of the Junior League of Miami Foundation and current president of the Historic Preservation Association
of Coral Gables. She holds a Doctorate in Public Administration with a concentration on non-profit management from NSU. Martinez Carbonell is one of a limited number of fundraisers worldwide who have earned the CFRE credential (certified fundraising executive).
Dr. Martinez Carbonell is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and lectures on the importance of historic preservation. She also writes a monthly column about historic landmarks in Coral Gables and beyond.
Designed by Kiehnel and Elliott [the firm also designed Coral Gables Elementary School] and patterned after a cathedral in Mexico, it was the first church built in the city. It was dedicated on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1925 and included an outdoor pulpit. George Merrick, whose father was a Congregational minister, donated land for the church and dedicated the building to him. He and his wife also donated the Spanish sanctuary sconces. The church’s interior—with polychrome beams and massive chandeliers—is the best remaining example of pristine Coral Gables style.

One of the original dimensions of Coral Gables Founder George Merrick’s dream was the importance of horses in the social and sporting life of his new city. The Coral Gables Riding Academy brought the beauty of horses and the excitement of horse shows to Coral Gables residents. The Academy played an important role in the local equestrian community. Some horses at the Academy were well known. Silver, a pure white Arabian stallion, famous as the mount of the Lone Ranger in the movies, was the star at local events and parades.
The Academy had a permit allowing horse riding throughout the city. The median of Alhambra Circle, which ran along the back of the stable, was originally laid out with a bridle path. The 35-mile horse trails ran along Alhambra and Country Club Prado, around the Granada Golf Course, the Biltmore course, the campus of the University of Miami, and beside the waterways.

The Academy’s Sunday breakfast rides were a weekly social event during the 1930s and 1940s. The rides wound through the Gables’ trails. When the riders reached “open country” –now the Riviera section of Coral Gables—they ate breakfast under the trees.
