or our Style and Beauty Issue and the Art Basel Special Edition we chose the best of the best from styling, to jewelry, to cars, and beauty brands. I want to thank the team of Creatives, some of them introduced to me by the supermodel herself, Ezequiel de la Rosa and Julian Nieves from Stila and Jane Cosmetics. De La Rosa photographed Alt for two days at Dr Kassir’s Spa and at the Waterside Restaurant in New Jersey. He is fabulous!!! In Miami, Deborah Scarpa introduced me to wonderful people like Judith Putnack and Jamie Jones. Jones is our main feature for the Art Basel section and she is one true artist, with excellent, taste, natural beauty and superb talent. Thanks to Oscar Carvallo and Burberry for dressing her. Same with the team of creatives that Nieves brought to the magazine from Stila and Jane. See that special section inspired by Tiffany & Company. Also John Madhessian from Madame Paulette from bringing superstar Dorinda Medley to the shoot. Also two special people, Kevin Richards from the Dunes Group and Michelle Lelia who’s done all the make up for this issue (except for the Palm Beach spread which was done by Gio Moros in Miami), without them we wouldn’t be able to have such a wonderful magazine, same with Scarpa. She put all her energy to make Jamie just gorgeous. The rest of the shoots were so wonderful. Thanks to Jacquelyn Mahalick for selecting the top doctors, and for Thomas La Vecchia for also assisting in this process. All wonderful people that love the ARTS!!!!! Thanks Ernst for allowing us to shoot at your beautiful home in Miami, and also Smilka Melgoza who introduced us to the owner of this beautiful home currently for sale.

he history of Russian Samovar starts well before the restaurant itself. Originally Jilly’s Canteen, and owned by friend of Frank Sinatra, Jilly Rizzo, Samovar was the go-to hot spot for Sinatra and The Rat Pack. In homage to Sinatra, Johnny Carson, and the good old boys, Samovar decided to maintain the original red banquettes from back in those days. The owners Vlada Von Shats and her two sons Michael and Nicholas preserved the original bar as featured in The Manchurian Candidate. In 1986, Roman Kaplan, founder of Russian Samovar acquired the property and was joined in 1987 by friends and business partners: Legendary dancer Mikhael Baryshnikov and Nobel Award Winning poet Joseph Brodsky. Baryshnikov’s baby grand piano is still used daily by the performers and guests can still request the Brodsky table, where the legends used to sit and drink away the hours. Samovar has remained a celebrity hangout over the years. Sometimes if you are lucky enough you can even catch unexpected shows by Liza Minelli and rumor has it that Mel Brooks adapted The Producers to film while sitting at our bar. Despite the history literally adorning the walls, the family owned business is a delight of good old glory days, in an area in New York that has remained interesting thanks to the Theatre District and people like Vlada! who has always remained genuine and exquisite. Also, a new generation is taking over the restaurant. Nicholas Von Shats served us exquisite drinks at the bar downstairs, while the musicians were performing. His skills as a mixologist shows a passion like no other for the vodka infused and original cocktails he creates for his customers. The bar was packed even at a Sunday night. Delightful, yes!.........and for generations to come.

amie Eroncig Jones decided to make some radical changes in determining to paint original and compelling works, which have now made evident her talent for thoughtful provocation. “At first I was intimidated to express myself this way,” says Jones, “now I find I must work every day, and it has become an integral part of my life”. The past few years have been transformative for Jones-

in-demand by major brands to integrate her work in a variety of exhibitions with their products like Hublot’s presentation called, “Pieces of Jamie”. Included in these exhibitions is Luxury Livings’ The Palace, where Jones hosted a vernissage on April 28th of this year, under the title “Jamie Jones Artwork”. “Her exciting paintings were a complement to our newest collection of fine furnishings,” said Ariel Filargarti, Director of Luxury

Living. He goes on to say; “we have had an incredible response with Jamie’s paintings and intend to feature her work for a full month at our salon.” Moved by the high quality of her work Rafiella Vegmatelli, daughter of the Founder of this great design house, acquired two paintings to add to her extensive contemporary art collection. test female contemporary artists to watch in 2018. She looks to expand her practice, inspired by events in urban culture with elements of a haunting –realistic style. Influenced both by The City she calls home, with it’s areas of blight juxtaposed to commercial decadence resulting in her chasing after the mystery and complexity of all our lives. Her greatest goal is to leave a fingerprint for the world to see and contemplate. Jamie is pushing boundaries and breaking new ground. The images she brings forth into her world of expression are the artists’ ability to reveal her emotions in dealing with loaded questions about life and death, social change and contemporary culture. Jones’s vivid creations are expressed on Plexiglass,

canvas, and stainless steel. She has been painting since 2002, and her unique style has developed over time. “I enjoy so many different types of expression, and my work is constantly evolving,” Jones says. In addition to fine art, Jones has also seen her creations reproduced in product design, a handmade line of custom home accessories, jewelry, and more. Jones is the mother of three small children and reveres the role of mother but had a hunger to engage in more imaginative pursuits with her stylistic influential work. Jones is a Miami native and finds inspiration in her surroundings but reveals deep emotion behind each canvas. She is a resident of Coconut Grove and most of her creative time is spent in her new studio.

here probably aren’t any more supermodels; at least not the way my generation got to know them. We used to browse in the newsstands, perusing the hundreds of faces of gorgeous women that looked naturally beautiful. Nowadays, it is another story. You see young actresses promoting new movies, and reality show stars (some are surgically enhanced) yet rarely do you see a pretty young model gracing the fashion bibles. These pretty young models haven’t put in the work needed to be labeled “Super Model” yet. For “Supermodel” is an entirely different world.... Take Carol Alt, for example; she is one of those rare women about whom the term of supermodel was actually coined for. This was no easy feat at a time when there was no Instagram; no cell phones to take selfies. She’s possibly the only supermodel who did double duty as an actress while she serviced modeling contracts.

I

RE D D RE S S BY A NN TAY LOR, BLUE JAC K E T BY D E S I G N-

n a time when models weren’t actresses and actresses weren’t models, Carol blurred the lines. Herewith the story of her ascension and how she has become a role model for women around the world for generations to come: “My dad was a Fire Chief in the South Bronx. We were four siblings who were raised with a strong sense of value of a dollar. He was also the first feminist I knew,” confessed the stunning Carol who has graced more than 700 covers in her lifetime. She was only 18 years old when she got her first gig as a model. In fact the very first day of her career, she shot her first cover for Bazaar magazine. This was unprecedented! But to really understand Alt, it is relevant to start from the beginning. It was 1979 when Carol was discovered by a photographer (Bert Rockfield) in Long Island. He stumbled upon her while she was working as a waitress and convinced her to take a shot at modeling. Carol was reluctant -as she was waiting on a military scholarship while studying law at Hofstra. “My boyfriend at the time, Michael, whom I met when I was 13 years old, broke up with me. He was at West Point and the distance was devastating to our relationship. I didn’t want to be the lonely girl sitting home on Long Island waiting for the ex-boyfriend to return – so I took Bert Rockfield up on his offer

to introduce me to Sue Charney at Ford.” If Sue Chernin would have been there that day she would have booked with them. Instead she signed with Elite Model Management which was owned by John Casablancas, and it was a cataclysmic change of life. At the beginning of the height of the modeling industry there were no cell phones. “You had to literally walk to a pay phone and call the agency to find out about your bookings. The agency was open from 9 to 5 pm so if you had appointments, studies or even a job, it was really hard to communicate. I will get everything down in a book that elite gave to me. I was so proud of that book because it had “Elite Model Management” on the cover. Inside, I wrote all my appointments, jobs, every penny I spent. Days were very long. You could do two or three jobs in a day starting from six and going till 4 AM. At the time you couldn’t see the film results for days. Film had to be developed. So it was harder for a photographer to know if he got the shot. Many times people would overshoot

42 | WWW.ARTBODEGAMAGAZINE.COM

because they were worried whether or not they got the shot. Today you could take four shots, see you have it and move onto the next thing. But back then, it was arduous. And as today, there were many different egos you had to deal with. On one occasion the supermodel/businesswoman recalls working for the photographer Irving Penn. “Irving demanded quiet in his studio, you could hear a pin drop. This particular day, the phone kept ringing and it was always for me-the agency, reminding me that I had to fly to Paris that night. The phone calls made me crazy; and they made Irving upset with me-and I knew it. At that time the agency used a “Lazy Susan” type of spinner in the center of a table to hold the models charts. There were no computers. The clipboard had different colored clips on top which would, by site, tell the agent what the model was doing. My board had a clip that let them know I was about to travel. So every agent called Irving Penn studio that day talk to me. He literally was burning with anger towards me.

E A RRI NG S BY C RI ST I NA SA BAT I NI

He hated any kind of noise interruption. I knew at the moment that I was never going to be booked by Penn again. And it wasn’t my fault. So I went to John and told him we needed a different system here… After John heard my story he looked at me and said, “you’re right. For the girls that work every single day we need another division. And one where you work with only one booker. We will call it the Super Elite Division.“ And since I was the first girl in the division… You can imagine the rest.”

T

hose days were different and hectic in her life. “When you did a catalogue, like Spiegel, even though it wasn’t prestigious, it was the bread and butter of a model’s life. Magazines didn’t pay, catalogs paid, but contracts were the big meal ticket. It was brutal because you worked literally every day, nights, weekends, birthdays – holidays! I remember calling my parents from rainy Champs-Elysees on an Easter Sunday from Paris. They were just sitting down to a family meal and I was alone and wet on a street corner in Paris“ declares Carol -who resides in Tribeca with her rescued cats. They are beautiful and enigmatic creatures, much like herself. She rescued them through a non-profit she supports called Shelter Chic. (Shelterchic.org)

As if she needs another project… Carol has been called a Chamaeleon because she is constantly changing in her photos, and the characters she portrays the movies, and with the ideas she comes up with. She has been a supermodel, and actress, television host, and entrepreneur; but what excites Carol are ideas. And she is full of them. Like her successful line of posters, calendars and exercise videos in a time when girls were retiring by the age of 24. These products have become cottage industries for the modeling industry. You’re not a supermodel if you don’t have a calendar or a poster. After Carol presented her idea to the agency of doing posters, every girl in the agency ended up having one: Kim Alexis, Paulina Porskova , Kelly Emberg, if the girl was a supermodel, she had a poster. I’d come a long way from the day I arrived at the agency with two Polaroids in my pocket and Lisa Branagan telling me not to move! I signed with Elite with a handshake. The first few months were a big test for Carol. She had to travel back and forth as she lived in Long Island with her parents. “I would take

46 | WWW.ARTBODEGAMAGAZINE.COM

trains to get to the city and come back every day to my waitressing job. Sometimes I sat at the agency for hours because I didn’t even have money to pay to sit at a restaurant. It was challenging but exciting. But I also knew that in a city like New York you had to constantly be careful and always be aware of your surroundings. All the hard work paid off. “You know it’s funny, “says Carol. “There are some crazy things I remember from that time. For example, I remember the photographer, John Stember, who was into practicing Transcendental Meditation, telling me I was going to be a huge star. HUGE!!! All I could think was, ‘how does he know?’ Then he went on to tell me that I would move out of my parents’ home in six months. (It did happen) I would have a terrible boyfriend (it did happen!) and I would have a cosmetic contract (it DID happen?!) Everything he told me that would happened, happened! “I also remember my first apartment. When we moved in we had no furniture, just two king beds and no curtains.

We were all models, all traveling, and we kind of slept on rotation; whatever bed was empty. It was fun. Not something I would want to do today - recalls the beauty. Her excitement over her new tear sheets, photos with Patrick Demarchelier and all the advice from her agency, paid off well. “The agents at Elite made me promise to never do anything without the agency. They told me that’s the best way to get into trouble. To go off with someone who says they can make you a star and you’re ever heard of again. If they are really a star maker, they will have no problem reaching out to the agency.” And that’s a credo I have lived by my entire life. And when I look back with these wiser eyes, I know that I saved my life more than once by telling people to call my agency. In any case, I have always believed that it’s a bunch of small bricks that build a wall. In other words, there is no one job that is going to make you your career. It’s a bunch of small, consistent good jobs that make a career. At the end of the day, no one can promise you superstardom in one photo shoot. Throughout my career, I realized it was the

people I worked with that helped to me to make my career. Every agent who put a brick in my wall with me. Every manager who helped me. You cannot do it alone. It is step by step. Social media, of course, can play a big role in changing people‘s careers today. But even on social media you need to have something that you’re offering. You need to have some kind of talent. Something for people to get excited about. Something to market. So even when people ask me about reality stars and Internet influencers – it takes some kind of gumption to get any kind of notoriety these days. Many people think that when I did the Sports Illustrated that it completely changed my life. Maybe a few more people recognize me on the street – and I got to go to a bankers convention in Minnesota-But it was still the day to day hard work that built up a career. I was also The original multitasker-doing movies as well as posters and calendars and videos. So I was constantly flying all over the world.” Very few beautiful women in the world are like Carol Alt and have accomplished such a diverse and productive career. This is why she is a chameleon. She effortlessly moves from modeling sets, to movie sets, to TV, to writing books, to lecturing and educating the masses on health and nutrition. It is this last topic that she is most recently passionate about. Writing books on health and nutrition has bled over into her career as a model. Not wanting to endorse products that are not healthy or good for the body. In many cases this has cost her a lot of money as she has turned down several contracts worth several millions of dollars to maintain her brand of healthy awareness; endorsing products she would only use or wear herself.

s for acting, she started in a time when an actors didn’t cross the line to endorse products and models were not very welcome in the acting arena. In fact, TV actors were not movie actors and movie actors would commit suicide if they ended up in TV. Yes, a lot has changed in the 40 years of her career. “First acting job I got was to play Ursula in Sweet Charity. I was hired by Bob Fosse. I worked so hard, and I had an acting coach. Little did I know that the rest of the cast thought I was sleeping with him! It was very hard to win any respect – as a member of the cast and also a supermodel. I

was faithful to my then husband, Ronnie, but the people were so sure that they knew how I got the job. You had to win them over. I felt like it was so hard; it was very hard to accomplish what I really wanted to do,” said Carol. But ultimately she was able to persist through hard work and dedication. Hiring coaches as she needed them and staying late and rehearsing long after everyone else had gone home. But times constantly change and businesses change too. And the one thing you can be sure of the fashion business is that fashion changes as well. Magazines never really pay models to do a cover any more. Instead you see influencers and social media stars-words that weren’t even spoken back in the day. “You have to understand that at the time, you built your career in modeling by JAC K E T BY A NN TAY LO R . his fiery woman has so much going on for her. Eva Hughes is at a stage in her life where things have changed. She is starting a new chapter and feels like reinventing herself. Much like the Hotel Diplomat who went through an extensive renovation while the true character of the hotel remains the same, Hughes feels that need to want more, to explore more without losing her essence. Untouched in spirit, changing in her outer image. She is freer, better, full of inspiration. After working for 10 years as the Director of Vogue in Latin America and Mexico and five years as the CEO of Conde Nast, developing the branch of the most important fashion magazines in the world in Latin America, Hughes changed the way we perceived Latin America in the United States. Her class is undeniable. Her apartment, adorable, every item is well positioned in each room, and the feeling you get when you walk in is an absolute delight. A woman whose mother possessed the most style ever, Hughes admits she was always

by rebeca herrero surrounded by glamour and elegance. “I remember cutting pieces of magazines, gluing them together. I was obsessed with magazines. In my household we had a strong admiration for books and magazines, always looking for elegant visuals,” recalls Hughes who now owns and run a consulting company, Adira while she lives in Miami. She lived in Mexico at a young age and her family is from San Sebastian, Spain. They moved to Miami when her mother was diagnosed with cancer and after the Earthquake in Mexico in 1987. Miami became her home. “I do miss the old Miami, that had a great sense of community. Yes, there is beauty in the development of buildings and restaurants, and how it has grown so much. But I do miss the Miami that was smaller, with less traffic and where people kind of knew each other more or less.” Hughes lived and worked for Conde Nast. She was hired after a 5-year period as Editor in Chief of a fantastic magazine at the time, Selecta. “Nora Bulnes, the owner met me. They had offered the job to my sister, and you have to remember I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life. I didn’t know if I was going to be a

lawyer, never thought for a minute that I would become a journalist. But Bulnes saw something in me. It became a huge hit and it got the attention of Vogue in Miami. When they called me we worked at an office here. Later on, they decided to move us to Mexico which was the right move at the time. We needed to focus on that market.” After moving to Mexico, Eva Hughes basically built Conde Nast Latin America. “I worked so much. I do regret not giving time to myself. My personal life, well, it was pretty much non-existent. I was so concentrated in making Conde Nast a success, I forgot about myself,” says Eva while having a little of an emotional nostalgia of those years that passed by and where she admits, she could have been more open about falling in love. “I was so cautious because I didn’t want to be hurt. Those years have passed and I’ve learned now my lesson. I want to focus a little bit on myself and regain those years where I only worked, and worked….reinvent myself.” Now she works at a fantastic place, Istituto Marangoni Institute where she is part of the Advisory Board. “I love it, I feel like I’m doing

something special for education. It is such a rewarding role. I also produced the podcasts Eva Talks, that are absolutely fantastic. I’m so grateful for having so much support from great people, individuals that have helped me and inspired me.” In her own words, Hughes says: “If we want to empower each other we need to respect, not hurt. It’s also so important how you present yourself. Everyone can make mistakes in life, I actually think that mistakes are healthy. You know, for example, maybe you see a stripper and you try to judge that woman. But she is doing it to pay the bills, and for whatever reason she can become a better person later on in life. We have a tendency to judge, but it’s good to be realistic and accept others the way they are….” As a woman of glamour and utmost elegance, Hughes rejects mediocrity. “I refuse to be mediocre. When I don’t feel comfortable I leave a place because it is not what I’m looking for in my life. Amidst the mediocrity, there are superb people changing the world…..we need to focus in those who do this.” Eva Hughes believes in destiny. “Now if you are smart you can adapt and become a better self. You do what you love. I wanted to reinvent myself because I need a new lift. Something that would make me feel brand new, different and why not? ……………and this is only the Beginning for Eva Hughes.

ike many families , my daughters, Tatiana and Katerina, and I enjoy a special ritual each summer. We return to my birthplace, Sâlo, Italy on the shores of Lake Garda, to reconnect with our family there. This year we decided to spend a vacation within our vacation with my sister Lucia and her children, Alexia and Paolino at an old farm in the picturesque hills of Tuscany. It should come as no surprise that three of the world’s greatest artists came from here. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael

surely were inspired by the splendor of this place. To this day, the vistas will leave you breathless. A dear old friend of mine, Carlo, a Florentian himself, recommended Borgo Iesolana, promising “Nino, you will be in Heaven.” Iesolana is an old farm converted into a hotel, nestled in the hills of Tuscany, just outside of Florence. The hotel which actually consists of several buildings or “houses” as the hotel calls them, rests on a hilltop at 850 meters above sea-level overlooking the elegant cypress trees that this region is known for and a vast expanse of carefully-tended-to vineyards. Agritourism has become popular in Italy as it has in the rest of the world. In Italy the term refers to simply staying at a converted farm or ranch. In the United States, in involves rolling your sleeves up and performing some closely-supervised farm labor, such as milking cows or picking crops. The only thing that I was rolling my sleeves up for were impeccably prepared meals, lovingly crafted from locally-sourced products and of course some of the world’s finest wines. This revered wine-making region, Montalcino is best known for Brunello di Montalcino, the popular red wine which is produced with 100% Sangiovese grapes, the predominant varietal here. All of the storied Brunellos come from here: Biondi Santi, Antinori, Frescobaldi, Col d’Orcia and Angelo Gaja, to name a few. The Brunellos of Tuscany are considered to be among Italy’s finest wines. There’s more to Montalcino than great wine. The food is equally renown. The cooking here is firmly rooted in the traditions of “Cucina Povera” or peasant cuisine which emphasizes, high-quality local ingredients prepared in a simple or rustic manner. The local ingredients just happen to include those which are most closely associated with classic Italian cuisine: wild game like hare, duck, wild boar, deer, pheasant, prized mushrooms like pocini, honey like corbezzolo, cheese like the local pecorino made from sheep’s milk, olive oils which are widely regarded as Italy’s best and of course thick crusted loaves of Tuscan bread. God truly blessed this land and we felt blessed for our family time at Borgo Iesolana in the Tuscan Hills.

y artwork is meant to push the boundaries of the way in which we comprehend the infinite aspects of our world, causing spectators to question the idea of perception itself. I implement levels of depth into my variety of works in order to create something so disparate from what is customary that the piece becomes in-commensurable, causing the spectator to wonder how they question life and its many facets. A desire for the stimulation that occurs with curiosity is the driving force within my art.

hen I think of Casa Positano, memories of grand villas filled with beautiful art, architecture details and nice natural surrounding envelops my thoughts. A stately property whose lot was acquired by Ernst Swietelsky 20 years ago, has become a beautiful home now for sale. With a unique view of Biscayne Bay that serves as a terrific spot for nature’s lovers, Casa Positano is a unique venue

for outdoor activities and camaraderie at a luxury level. Built with a Mediterranean aesthetic in mind, Casa Positano resembles an Italian villa that encompasses glamour, elegance and subtlety. The house is perfect for entertainment. It has a dock that takes you into the bay and the Bahamas with beautiful anchorages while you enjoy beautiful sunsets. Sunrise and sunsets can be enjoyed from the

beautiful three terraces. The pool is adjacent to the main house so guests and owners can enjoy a nice afternoon swim after a long busy day of work. It also boasts several exquisite bedrooms, 5 in total. What is spectacular is the openness of its design. You can see the bay from inside the house at every room. Making your guests particularly happy and relaxed anytime of the day. It is sure a dream of a house for entertaining important clients and loved ones. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these days a lot of eyes are fixed on the Public Safety Building (housing the city’s police and fire departments) in Coral Gables, Florida, trying to determine if the imposing 1970s structure is a thing of beauty...or an eyesore. by bruce fitzgerald

oral Gables was founded during the City Beautiful movement of the early 20th century and boasts a plethora of Mediterranean Revival-style buildings that give this South Florida city a well-known, signature architectural look. But among the original mansions, cottages, hotels, churches and schools built in the “Old Spanish” manner -- many of which required the intervention of preservationists to prevent demolition -- buildings in the so-called Brutalist style are an anomaly. The Coral Gables Public Safety Building is a rare example of a genre originally defined as beton brut, from the French term that translates as “raw concrete.” Although “Brutalism” (as the new architectur-

al style came to be known) flourished for over twenty years in the aftermath of WWII, it largely went out of favor by the late 1970s. But not before Walter Klements, a Florida architect, was commissioned to design the Public Safety Building in a style that must have seemed radical in 1975, when the structure made its official debut. But it still stands -- for the time being -- as the only government building in Coral Gables of Brutalist design: bold and rugged in its use of sculpted concrete massed to form monumental exterior curved walls. While the world has moved on to glass curtain-wall construction, the “Brute” of Coral Gables, Florida stands as a stark testament to what latter-day critics are calling an honest, idealistic, even heroic form of public engagement -- modern buildings with a civic purpose. The physicality of Brutalism seems to be

resonating once again, not least in the form of a determined effort by the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables to draw public attention to the plight of the Public Safety Building, which -- as part of a land-swap arrangement between Coral Gables and a local developer -- is likely to be scheduled for demolition by 2020. “Our goal,” says HPACG president Karelia Martinez Carbonell, “is to prevent the eradication of our architectural patrimony and encourage at least the partial preservation of our own, singular Brutalist landmark. Just look at Marcel Breuer’s Whitney Museum -- a classic Brutalist structure that’s now part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York -- and realize how re-purposing ‘out of style’ buildings can still make cultural and economic sense.” And allow us to see beauty where we may least expect it.

Buildings we love to hate

A SHORT HISTORY OF BRUTALISM It was an architectural phenomenon born of necessity in Europe after the devastation and deprivation of the second World War, steel then being in short supply and concrete being a sturdy and available material for rebuilding the government and commercial sectors of damaged cities. Overlapping the Mid-Century Modern movement of roughly the same time period (1945 -1975), Brutalism was in many ways the antithesis of MCM, which referenced the International Style and emphasized clean, simple, lightsuffused spaces. Brutalism, on the other hand -- although often employed by progressive architects in both Europe and finally in the U.S. -- did not speak the language of the modernist corporate world, but rather a more “honest” and direct design language that critics interpreted as ugly, oppressive and bleak. Until they didn’t. Today, Brutalism is on the rebound, earning new-found respect for its strength of character and a kind of raw integrity. It simply is what it is: a one-of-a-kind expression of who we were at a certain point in time. As such, it deserves to be preserved

She is seven months pregnant, awaiting the birth of her first child, a girl already called Romy. As incredible as her life is, she is one hard working lady focusing on the Real Estate market. The Dutch beauty was born and raised in Amsterdam and has an adventurous and dynamic background. Her travels formed a person with strong values and independence, where her free spirit made her a worldly person with an intense passion for beautiful things and life. Her European background and work ethics has served her well to perform as a realtor in Miami where she resides with her husband Adem. Her passion for traveling started at a young age and having the experiences of living and working abroad gave her another perspective in life. She has always been passionate about real estate. While studying at the Hotel Business School in Amsterdam, “I already started to work for an owner developer and sold his holiday homes in France, then lived in Ibiza and two years later in Austria. This non-profit helps and supports at-risk children whom parents are incarcerated, to deal with life challenges in a positive, proactive manner that empowers them to make wise choices and contribute positively to society. The organization is founded by Paulette Pfeiffer. “I met Paulette two years ago. I immediately felt her warm hearted personality and care for these children. I wanted to enhance her by joining the Advisory Committee and by volunteering. The love and sincere joy these children experience makes me so proud. It’s a satisfying and wonderful cause.” The fundraiser events she hosts at some of her and her husband’s investment properties have enabled the organization to grow. It existed for many years in South Carolina and now, after Pfeiffer moved to Miami, both women are taking it to the next level. It has helped around 15,000 children who are victims of these circumstances. Some have even graduated from college. It is a unique cause with great positive results. Her life is now focused on raising her daughter and keep exploring the growth of her business (for more information on Judith visit www. judithproperties.com). His mantra is very simple, to make women look younger as the natural progression of aging affects every single person in the world, no matter their race, age or ethnicity. “It’s simple, I have women that come to my office, who feel incredibly young since they work out and when they look at themselves in the mirror, they don’t see a young face. The great fact is that we are here for this, to make them look younger and improve their image,” said the graduate from Biological Sciences at Stony Brook School of Medicine. With an impeccable pedigree, Dr. Vasyukevich came to the United States from Latvia. “I wanted to become a doctor. I found myself loving what I do which is the most challenging discipline in the medical studies, plastic surgery.” In his opinion, plastic surgery requires the most skills and talent, because the outcome depends on the surgery. It’s comparable to being an artist or a sculptor. At his Upper East Side office, the talented doctor has a very lit and elegant office, where art canvasses the walls. He is also an avid art collector, and his office also functions as an art gallery. Here you feel a relaxed environment, and the screen shows you a before and after of his patients. They look remarkably young. “Every patient is a creation for me. You cannot do the same surgery on each person. Everyone is unique and that’s what makes our profession so special. Many women want to look the way they feel. It’s called facial rejuvenation,” declares the surgeon who received his medical degree from Stony Brook School of Medicine as well. He also completed a 4-year residency in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) at Montefiore Medical Center, which is affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Vasyukevich was also selected for facial plastic and reconstructive fellowship training at Mount Sinai Medical Center, a widely respected program within the medical community that offers some of the finest postgraduate training in the world for facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons. “I love what I do. In the Upper East Side women demand perfection. They want to look natural and what best way to do this but with the right doctor. The field has improved tremendously with time, and it has turned 180 degrees, where you don’t simply look at stretched faces. Also, the neck surgery is crucial, at the end of the day we make women look 15 years younger. Men too!” “You have to understand that with age the body and the face begins to sag. There is no way to reverse this. The face starts showing wrinkles. You can also do fillers, but surgery is sometimes better in the long run. The reason for this is because with fillers, not only are they temporary, there are some patients that also overdo them. Occasionally, I have to talk the patient out of it. It’s a process that involves emotions too,” confirms Dr. Vasyukevich. The handsome doctor has a special approach to each patient. During consultation, he admits to showcasing the reality of our faces on everyday photographs he takes at his office. “When we look at ourselves in the mirror, or when we take a selfie, sometimes we are not looking at reality. At my office you see the truth of the way you look. This makes my patients think about the quality of facial rejuvenation and other cosmetic procedures we can perform on them. It changes their lives in a positive way.”

The Body Contour Doctor

“It helps to have physical strength in order to be great at body contouring” Dr Elie Levine works alongside his wife, Jodi Levine MD. Together they have a 300 square feet office in the Upper East Side. The doctor himself sometimes sees 30 patients a day, which makes for a hectic day at the office, constantly, contributing to the correlation with his wife who is a dermatologist. “We were referring so many patients to each other that we decided to share the space.” And indeed, the space is unique. The operating room and recovery area is one of the more expansive spaces found in Manhattan. His expertise on body contour is very palpable as you watch photographs of before and after of the back of his patients, who go through extended transformations of the body. “For me it is a pleasure to do different things, from tummy tucks to rhinoplasty, and body contour is a challenge. You need to really know what the patient needs, and give the best results during the process.” What makes him stand out is the facility, the dedication of Dr. Levine, and his experience. “We do employ social media and use different marketing tools but you also want to be perceived as a serious doctor. It is not that easy to maintain that balance, but we are sensitive to our patient’s emotions. We see some serious cases of people who want extreme liposuction in the whole body. It takes some person strength on my end. That is why I exercise and weight lift, it facilitates the process,” said Dr Levine, a graduate of Yale University’s medical school. “Now there are so many options, technology has changed the way we do plastic surgery,” admits the doctor. A proponent of non-invasive procedure, Dr. Elie Levin admits that you have so many options, from grafting to body and face lift contouring. One procedure Dr. Levine has perfected for women is the unsightly ‘bra-bulge’-the area located between the breast and armpit. He has developed a transformative solution for this pesky problem. “A lot of men are oblivious to it, but women really notice that area of their body,” Dr. Levine said. “The tricky part is that no amount of exercise, or dieting, a woman does will cause that bulge to shrink or disappear.” He adds, “I treat more and more women requesting a little nip-and-tuck to get rid of their unwanted ‘bra fat’.” During a brief 20-minute procedure, Dr. Elie Levine employs only the use of a needle, to tighten and wonderfully trim-down that roll with a small amount of micro-liposuction. Even better, this is a non-surgical procedure, meaning no cutting - or downtime - for the patient! On his perception about young girls having too much plastic surgery due to the influence from Instagram perfection and celebrity-worship he states, “It brings awareness to the issues. You really don’t want to be looked at as a person with extreme plastic surgery, but the silver lining is that women are more open to the narrative of plastic surgery, and I see that as a positive sign in our society when it comes to beauty.” And when coyly asked about which celebrities he perceives as having had work done and yet still appear natural, he sites Jennifer Aniston as a perfect example. 72 | WWW.ARTBODEGAMAGAZINE.COM

Dr. Preminger is a Harvard undergraduate, born and bred in New York City. Her special care for her patients is what sets her apart. Being a mother herself of three children, she is an expert of mommy makeovers. Her superb technique shows in her fashionable style and a very artistic outlook at her craft. “I did a thesis on the Jewish nose, I also have worked consistently with Operation Smile, dealing with deformities that we can fix. It’s inspiring to see how much we can change someone’s life by applying our knowledge and our skills,” says the doctor who also went to NYC Cornell and did a Columbia University Residency and Fellowship. Dr. Preminger is an Ivy League educated, Board Certified female plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breast, and body. She holds faculty appointments at Columbia University as well as several other fully accredited New York hospitals. “When it comes to solutions we have the 3D software which consists of looking at the changes we can make to our body, which is something that actually works really well with the patients.” “It’s important to consider the emotional aspect that comes to our patients when they undergo surgery. When I studied the subject of the Jewish nose and how we tried to hide our identities, there was a doctor at the time, the Father of Rhinoplasty, Jack Joseph, and he became an expert on this type of surgeries because of the fact that people didn’t want to be stereotyped. It is very important to understand this process. Some patients want to hide their identity; hence the fact that we are sometimes expecting something that might not be good for you. How to accommodate our patients with their expectations while remaining very natural, this is the challenge.” Dr. Preminger trained at some of the country’s finest institutions including New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, Columbia University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary, Lenox Hill Hospital, and the Hospital For Special Surgery. She also studied art at the Art Students League. At her office she feels at ease, she also confirms to use some of the non-invasive technique she promotes. “When I’m in New York I like to balance my life, I love to swim at Asphalt Green, one of my favorites places, and also take out my children to a place like Serendipity”. Her office is a perfect example of good taste, excellent interior design, and some modern touches that makes her exquisite and one of our top doctors. DR. Michelle Zweifler, MD FACS 800-A Fifth Avenue, New York 10021 Phone 212-355-0500 www.drmichellezweifler.com The best on breast implants

“The Pendulum is swinging back to surgery” Very few plastic surgeons are as committed as Dr. Michelle Zweifler. Since she was an adolescent, Dr. Zweifler fell in love with plastic surgery. Not even 16 years old, she had plastic surgery herself, something she was enamored of to the level of being asked by the nurses to reassure other young patients at the hospital. “It was one of those A-Ha moments, I knew as soon as I had plastic surgery myself, that I wanted to dedicate my career to it.” And so, she has. From her Fifth Avenue office, which is located in one of the most prestigious areas in Manhattan, Dr. Zweifler welcomes you with her youthful look and she is committed to her practice. She has a special folder with before and after images of women whose breast were deflated and deformed, and the beautiful results she had brought to these women. “Breast implants are game changing, and it brings such a positive outcome, especially when done naturally,” confessed the brunette who hails from Long Island. All her life has been established in New York, including her studies at Cornell University, her General Surgery Residency at Lenox Hill Hospital, and her Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn in New York. But there was a brief period in her life where she trained in San Francisco. “Here I learned through extensive training that women wanted a natural approach to plastic surgery. Who wants to be known for having plastic surgery? No one!” admits Dr. Zweifler. As we discussed the subject of why she is chosen as one of the top doctors is not only her technique and training, but the fact that she can relate to women. “I listen to them, I listen to their concerns. It’s a very genuine process where you want to have them leave the office happy and excited about the procedure,” declares Dr. Zweifler, with an honest expression of pride in her face. For her, liposuction and skin removal with tightening are better procedures compare to more non-invasive options. This new generation is going back to facelifts as well. There has been a great advanced in technology, from superficial peels of the epidermis to deeper TCA chemical peels, but the pendulum is going back to surgery. One example is cool sculpting, it only reduces 20% of the fat, so you might have to redo it. Meanwhile liposuction is more permanent, as long as you take care of yourself and start a diet and exercise plan that will help you. “My approach is the girl next door. When you overdo the fillers, it doesn’t look natural. The problem with waiting too long for plastic surgery is that the skin quality might not be that good. Some crow’s feet wrinkles can look cute, but if you wait too long, again, you will definitely see that the wrinkles will etched in, making it harder to control. When it comes to facelifts, the approach is to hide the incisions in the hair line, so it looks natural,” admits Dr. Zweifler. “I just want to bring men and women to the way they were. Making them look younger will also have an impact in their inner beauty and self-esteem.” 74 | WWW.ARTBODEGAMAGAZINE.COM

Bright star, would I were steadfast as thou artNot in lone splendour hung aloft the night And watching, with eternal lids apart, Like Nature’s patient, sleepless Eremite, The moving waters at their priestlike task Of pure ablution round earth’s human shores, Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask Of snow upon the mountains and the moorsNo-yet still steadfast, still unchangeable, Pillow’d upon my fair love’s ripening breast, To feel for ever its soft fall and swell, Awake for ever in a sweet unrest, Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, And so live ever-or else swoon to death. Remembering

AILEEN SOO L

Last year we did an incredible photo shoot with my client Aileen Soo. I met her 5 years ago in Puerto Rico and she and I connected instantly. She participated in one of our first issues and spent quality time with my friend Jeanette Prenger and Dineen Garcia from Macy’s. It was an incredible time. She made my birthday very special at La Concha Hotel with the owner of Papi Underwear, Alan Zelcer. We did this photo shoot inspired in fashion with Christian Reiner, Brenda Coreano, Veronique Descombes, Vivienne Jurado, Eileen P. Kelly, Jessica Frantzen, Isabel C. Fernandez, and Glenys Rivera, who is a great fashion designer. Aileen wore her clothes. A few of months later Aileen was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away in July of 2017. It was a shocking death for many that didn’t know she had been sick for a while. She invited me to her home to write her life story- or at least the message she wanted to communicate before her death. We had a solemn dinner with the family and her three children. I was completely devastated. Never in my life had a lost a very young friend like that, so sudden, under the watch and love of her three beautiful children, and the father who was well, trying to figure out how to handle it. The moments were magical, unique and she asked me to write the story. She told me, “I don’t know what you are going to do with it, but write it”. On our next health issue with Carol Alt I will write it in detail. In the meantime this is a homage to a beautiful soul who loved many, who helped many, surrounded by beautiful gowns from Glenys Rivas, and with her loyal friends who were there to make her laugh, one evening at PS 109 in Manhattan. Thanks Rolinda Ramos for helping me do this panel event – and to ArtSpace in Manhattan. Where Tony and Sebastian are ... and great beautiful artists. Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse in midtown, New York is one of the best restaurants Art Bodega Magazine has reviewed. The hamburgers were exquisite, the service was excellent and it is the best spot to go out on a date or a business meeting due to the quality of the food and great location. Their beef is hand chosen by owner William Degel, who works directly with ranches in Nebraska & Omaha who raise the cattle to our exact specifications. Don’t forget to visit it when you are in town!
