The Style & Beauty Issue 2019 A letter from the Editor

Style is what our mother looked like as we were growing up. Style is what you liked to watch on the small screen. Style are the photos in the magazines you used to browsed at the aisle in the supermarkets, the actresses and models we wanted to resemble as a little girl with big dreams and a toothless smile. Few people have authentic style, but with the right makeup, the right wardrobe, every single woman (and men! Sorry gents, this issue focused mostly on women), can be beautiful. No matter their size, race, economic status, women have always been objects of desire. They are also mothers, warriors, they started the concept of philanthropy, even though they depended on the Rockefeller and Carnegie males for donations, us women changed the world. Also, a big part of philanthropy came from the displaced, the minorities, the poor. When we think of the Salvation Army, UNICEF, YWCA, the multiple modern museums in Manhattan, we have to know that behind these legacies, there were strong and progressive women.

REBECA HERRERO

Barbara Bush. So much can be done, especially if it involves our creativity. Style, beauty and philanthropy go hand in hand. Who better to represent this than Jean Shafiroff and the 20 women selected on these pages. Through fashion and the arts, Manhattan got notice worldwide and influenced pop culture for ages. Here a drug addict like Basquiat become one of the most coveted artists. Blondie was the epitome of beauty and cool. Rose Hartman (featured in Art Bodega) photographs of yesteryear at Studio 54, an era forever gone but never forgotten, and in the 18th year anniversary of our biggest tragedy, 9-11, who can forget the infinite tears mothers and wives have cried thinking of that day…New York City is unique, and South Florida gives sunshine to our tears when we remember that day. Enjoy this great issue with incredible joy!

Maybe that’s why I like so much Elizabeth Warren and the once incredible first lady

elta Airlines took the time to show us – a handful of New York journalists- the beauty of what Puerto Rico has become post- Hurricane Maria. The results of this important culinary festival, Saborea Puerto Rico, is a four-day event where foodies can taste the creations of top chefs from the island and around the world.

The event took off with a showcase of dozens of restaurants and distilleries from the island at the Sheraton Hotel in Isla Verde. This area is the touristic hub considered by many one of the top destinations worldwide. Delta, the premier airline in the Caribbean, was once again the sponsor of this relevant event, full of color, vibrancy and the delightful breeze of San Juan. The trip also took us to the El Morro. The fortress circles the small town of Old San Juan, home to hundreds of churches and history that gives it a romantic air to every cobblestoned street that lies on the hills of this precious area. Little bars outline the top of the colonial city, quaint restaurants like Waffle-era Tea Room alias La Waflera and who can miss La Factoria, considered one of the best bars in the world. At La Waflera, you can order their own interpretation of the waffle with a Puerto Rican flair. It was delicious, and the coffee is made old school, with a cloth that filters the water and coffee beans, used by our grandmothers from Puerto Rico many decades ago. Enjoyable, yes! Artistic and fabulous. At Saborea, the special night of tasting is where the entertainment started. At the “Bubbles and Bites” night, you could find the chefs creating- with Puerto Rican pride and fervor- exquisite concoctions enveloped by the aroma of the Rums of Puerto Rico. Tasty “tostones”, cod fish, sugary treats, yuca bites and well, the modern fusion of culinary recipes that your mouth and brain can’t resist were some of the dishes served that night. Another hot spot in the island is the Santaella Restaurant. Here Chef Jose Santaella creates an elegant evolution of authentic dishes and local ingredients. At the modern spot, if you order a quesadilla, it has the tasty blend of local ingredients, paired with goat cheese and white truffle

oil, and the beef sliders include sweet plantain. “Que rico!” Of course, the ambiance makes it amazing, elegant ladies parade their new fashions with their proud partners, making Santaella the “it” place to be – adjacent to the famous Plaza del Mercado, a market that sells produce during the day, but becomes the bar scene of the town at night. One of the highlights of Saborea also included the renowned chef Augusto Schneider. For decades, he delighted food lovers with his European knowledge of cuisine at the Excelcior Hotel in Miramar. Today he teaches young chefs how to cook. Always open for teaching us his incredible talent, the founder of the Art of Cooking School, created some special recipes for us at La Boutique du Vin. Magnificent. Overall, the airline Delta has been the premier sponsor of this important festival which is already in its 11th edition. Our perception was that the island has revitalized quickly from the tragedy of Maria, and the new entrepreneurs are changing the landscape into a top of the line, high quality touristic spot were festivals and new projects take us to the land of exceptional high-level cuisine. Saborea has evolved into that premier event where for four days, people forget politics and unite for a unique experience. Thanks to Delta, world travelers can enjoy these unique culinary experiences that has transformed Puerto Rico in the premier destination in the Caribbean. to Rico’s oldest rum brand. Lauded for its deep, almost whiskey-like complexity, the rum—aged in the city of Bayamón, located inland and to the west of San Juan—is produced in two age-specific expressions. The two-star rests for three years, and the three-star is a blend of six- to ten-year-aged rums.

As the story goes, in 1871 Pedro F. Fernández developed the rum formula that his family still uses today, which lends the spirit its character. Ron del Barrilito has been aging its rum in Spanish sherry barrels for over a century. To visit Hacienda Santa Ana go to www.rondelbarrilito.com/ tours

What has been your inspiration in style all your life? I get inspired by many things or people. It can be meeting a good friend and loving the look. It is not something in specific I get my inspiration from. Usually I get inspired by how I feel and what I want to express at that moment.

You have become a mom...how do you feel about it? I feel great! It really is the best thing that can happen to a woman. To become a mother. I feel so blessed to have our little Romy and watch her daily making process and even saying “mama” now. Even before she said “dada”. She is our cherry on our cake.

What does philanthropy mean for you. It means a lot to me and I am part of a non-profit organization that supports children whose parents are incarcerated and me and my husband support this apart from the fact that I am on the board and volunteer.

Why is Miami so special to you? Miami is became special to me because I met the love of my life here, moved here for him and gave birth to our baby in Mount Sinai. We live in Miami Beach and I love it. We look over Brickell’s skyline and the islands. Miami to me has it all. It is a still growing cosmopolitan city and we have the beach and the bay. So many great spots in town. I love Miami. You are athletic. Talk about your fitness regime. I love my weekly workouts at Figurella and I am very passionate about tennis and (salsa) dancing. Tell me what you thought of Acento. Acento jewelry line is owned by my dear and talented friend Paloma. She lives in our building and we became close friends. I am totally excited about all her pieces. Favorite things to do in Miami? One of my favorite things to do is going out for dinner. From the moment I have to dress up, to stepping into a restaurant taking in the scenery and menu card. I just love it. Places I love to go are: “SurfClub Bal Harbor”, the bar at that Four Seasons hotel is also a great spot. Like the view at Juvia, the food at Milos is always good and the pizza at Lucali Pizza is our favorite. I love to go to the Beach at Edition. Great beach club, good service.

You have been traveling to Europe and South Africa...what did the trips represent to you? I am from Europe. The Netherlands in particular, always has a special place in my heart. I do see and have experienced the differences between where I live and where I am from. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, like everything in life. I recently spent 3 weeks in Amsterdam, visiting family and friend, and brought my now 8 month old daughter and this was a very meaning ful trip. Yes, I have traveled to many places and on every continent in this world but the trip to South Africa (Capetown) with my husband was one of the most special trips. Not only he asked me to marry me in the most southern point of Africa, it was just the most spectacular scenery to be at, beautiful nature and great wineries.

The MAKING OF

A Mirakel

Tony sees the possibilities in certain ingredients, how they might mix and work together in ways never formulated before. And his initial vision was humble and personal. He set out to find a solution for severe ingrown hair that would pock his face with angry, infected red bumps.

The natural twang in Tony Gay’s voice evokes images of lush backwoods dotted with fireflies at dusk, hot buttermilk biscuits and a shot of moonshine… So it probably wouldn’t surprise you to learn the Georgia native prefers the natural life, embracing “the old days” and home remedies, “the stuff your grandparents and great grandparents may have used”.

“Dermatologists could take care of the problem, but no one could stop it from happening again,” said Tony. For a fellow who takes pride in his appearance, eats healthfully, and does 500 crunches, pull-ups and curls per workout, the constant skin issues were maddening.

But the outsized spirit and nevermet-a-stranger hospitality of the avid outdoorsman may not prepare you for the fact that Tony formulated a cutting-edge cream on the verge

Determined to end the cycle, he started mixing ingredients like a Southern version of a mad scientist. He’d meticulously disinfect his kitchen before every session, then go at it for hours, forgoing sleep, energized by his research. Friends and family started teasing him.

These ideas come to me, so I dig in to see how I can make them work ~ Tony Gay

“They called me all kinds of crazy names,” he laughs, “It didn’t bother me none.” Besides, he says, he’s the one enjoying the last laugh now: “Nobody makes fun of me anymore!” A year-and-a-half of mixing, research, testing, more mixing and more researching lead to a product that would be called MIRAKEL, a groundbreaking cream with effects far beyond any expectation.

of upsetting the pharmaceutical industry. And he started it all in his kitchen. “I’ve always been a fixer,” he says, matter-of-factly, “If something’s wrong, I always want to help. I have that heart.” And Tony had a big idea he had to pursue that is now poised to be a game changer.

While Tony’s experiment began with the search for a solution for ingrown hair, he ended up creating something much bigger… a stunning breakthrough in skin care that has powerful effects on an alphabet soup of problems that affect the skin… from acne to psoriasis to lesions to rashes to sores and a whole host of irritations and skin conditions that are painful, embarrassing and lifealtering.

It’s a picture-perfect day in Miami. The sun is shining, the turquoise pool is glistening, and Linda Price has just squeezed into a bikini she claims is too tight… but all the better to show off her skin. “Tony’s cream — which we’ve now named MIRAKEL — has worked for every one of us on the board on SANVIO,” says Robin Wells, a hard-charging marketing executive who became a true believer when she was recovering from skin cancer surgery. Doctors removed skin from Robin’s nose and told her some scarring would be inevitable. After using MIRAKEL, the scars are virtually invisible to the eye. That sealed the deal for her. She’s now Sanvio’s Vice President of Marketing.

“I managed to get into it somehow!” she says with a lively sincerity that immediately makes you want to celebrate the accomplishment with a poolside daiquiri. At the age of 58, Linda has become a first-time model for MIRAKEL. When you ask if she’s “going Hollywood”, she bursts into laughter and calls the experience humbling. “I have three kids, and when you have someone look at you the way you never look at yourself, it makes you feel very, very good.”

“I healed better and faster than anyone could’ve imagined,” she says, enthusiastically detailing how every board member has a MIRAKEL story. “One board member used it when she felt an attack of hives coming on, and the hives never developed.” Another member put it on a bout of adult acne and found MIRAKEL cut the cycle short. It healed severely cracked skin on one man’s feet. Yet another used it on his dad’s bug bite-turnedsevere-blood-blister that would not heal.

Mirakel soothes irritated, unhealthy skin Suddenly, skin that was red, painful and embarrassing was finding relief. And fast. “I’m so proud of MIRAKEL,” says Tony, giving credit not to himself but to his “God-given gift” for understanding ingredients and envisioning solutions. It also helps that the native Georgian has a lifelong passion for helping others. “My goal is to be successful, of course, “ he says, “but I’m not successful if it doesn’t help people.”

Every time, users felt instant pain relief followed by a clear improvement in symptoms, even when nothing else had helped before.

The cream he mixed and remixed in his kitchen helped Tony claim victory in his war against ingrown facial hair. But that was just the beginning.

We will be a disrupter," say Lou. "Not because we are mandated to do this, but because we think it is the right thing to do."

Tony discovered his formulation helped with lingering nerve pain from Shingles, painful fever blisters, and angry rashes. It promoted rapid-fire healing in common annoyances like bug bites, scratches, rashes and pimples. Lou Semrad, who once worked in the pharmaceutical industry, is now on the Sanvio board of directors and its CEO. Sanvio is the company now bringing Tony’s cream to the public. I live in the health care world everyday,” says Lou, a healthcare executive who met Tony working together in the hospital environment. “And since I met him, Tony was always telling me these stories. I’m reading testimonials from his family members and friends about the impacts his cream had on them.” “I said ‘Alright, I’m in.’” After reviewing all those cases from Tony’s circle of family and close friends, Lou knew this cream was something exceptional that he wanted to help shepherd into the world.

Mirakel makes angry skin feel happy again Now a true believer, Robin takes her tube to the salon for eyebrow waxing appointments.

IT SOUNDED LIKE ASPIRIN OR PENICILLIN, A ONCE IN A LIFETIME PRODUCT" ~ Lou Semrad

That’s how the board of SANVIO would grow: one impressive case after another.

Address: 320 East Clayton St., Suite 417, Athens, GA 30601 | Phone: 1 (888) 855-5681 | Website: SANVIO.com

You don’t need a prescription, and it doesn’t cost a thousand dollars. It’s a simple fix, and it’s worth it, says Linda.

“I used to get terrible redness and whiteheads that would last for eight hours after waxing,” she says, “I was embarrassed to show my face. Do you know how many women go through that?” But with a dab of MIRAKEL after waxing, her skin is clear within 5 minutes. The redness vanishes. The whiteheads never appear. The post-waxing embarrassment is gone. “It’s just as valuable as that Van Gogh or Rolls Royce or Prada purse,” says Robin, “because it helps you live beautifully.” Now she keeps a tube in her purse like a mini-first aid kit for skin.

SO WHY IS SANVIO TELLING YOU WHAT’S IN THE FORMULA?

You'll be getting the the safest, highestquality product at a good price.

The Art of “It’s all about helping somebody,” says Tony from his home outside Macon, “I treat people the way I want to be treated, and I get a sensation of happiness when I hear I’m changing lives.” For Robin, her thoughts immediately go to women like her… the countless people who can avoid the embarrassing redness and lingering discomfort that common beauty procedures can cause. Even though they’re often billed as “lunchtime” specials, aesthetic procedures like lasers, facials, waxing and even Botox can actually leave skin looking inflamed and feeling painful for hours afterwards.

For Lou, the hospital guy in the group, the excitement comes at the prospect of helping people who’ve never gotten the relief they desperately want. “There are underserved communities of people with skin problems…like genital herpes and psoriasis. Or patients with bed sores,” he says, “These are the people we want to serve.”

SO WHAT’S IN MIRAKEL, ANYWAY? Glad you asked. Because they don’t mind telling you.

Lou Semrad, CEO SANVIO

The openness is a reflection of SANVIO’s commitment to be transparent with the public. The pharmaceutical company promises purity, ingredients sourced from safe providers in the USA, a green supply chain, no animal testing, and is registering with the FDA. “Big Pharma currently has a negative image,” says Lou Semrad. “Their lack of transparency leads to price-gouging, backroom deals and preferential pricing that never benefits the consumer. That is NOT the relationship we want with customers.” SANVIO also wants you to know they will be taking the lead in Track and Trace, meaning you will know the pedigree of the product — where each ingredient came from and where it was blended — something unheard of in the industry, which is vulnerable to putting out adulterated products because it can’t easily or clearly track its ingredient sources. “We will be a disrupter,” says Lou, “Because we’re not mandated to do this, but because we think it’s the right thing to do.” Right out of the gate, the makers of MIRAKEL are letting you know you’ll be getting the safest, highest-quality product at a good price. “That’s our commitment.” Science has begun to understand the massive importance of pH to the skin. A healthy pH is what gives the skin its “acid mantel”. Scientists now know that this acid barrier is essential for skin to protect and heal itself. It’s the body’s natural barrier against disease and environmental irritants. When skin is red and angry, pH levels are off. That’s when you see skin become unhealthy, irritated, angry, and embarrassing. MIRAKEL’S formula resets the skin’s pH back to where mother nature intended. Good bacteria thrives, and the skin can once again heal itself. So while this cream promotes soft, pretty skin, it’s also about powerful healing.

The MAGIC OF

Mirakel MIRAKEL’S acidic pH mirrors the pH of healthy skin, helping restore your skin to its natural pH levels. In unhealthy skin, the pH level has been thrown off by illness or environmental factors, damaging the skin’s natural protective barrier and disrupting its ability to heal. MIRAKEL helps the skin fight back. Its active ingredients offer temporary but immediate pain and itch relief. Emollients soften the dry, rough, flaky spots. Humectants pull moisture to the top layer of your skin, and occlusives keep that top layer moisture in place. The moisture immediately improves the look and feel of the your skin. Every product is trying to sell us youth and beauty. But women just want something that’s gonna work. Linda. “Everything I used it on has been amazing,” Linda says, “it heals so quickly”. Linda now works with hospice patients. Her perspective has switched from beauty to necessity. “Wound care is the #1 issue we deal with,” she says “And to think that something over-thecounter can be preventative or help an existing wound heal quickly? It’s crazy, and it’s exciting!” The Journal of Wound Research has published research that confirms the importance healthy skin pH in healing wounds, controlling infection, reducing bacteria and accelerating healing. So whatever it is that’s made you uncomfortable in your skin, a MIRAKEL is possible for you.

Linda was amazed when she tried Mirakel on her mom’s psoriasis scabs and saw them heal. Then it worked on a cold sore that started to emerge on Linda’s upper lip just days before her photo shoot “and in 3 days it was utterly gone!” Even though she could already feel the cold sore starting to burn, “MIRAKEL stopped the blister from bubbling, popping or scabbing.”

Beauty & Wellness

Why Sanvio chose Linda Price as the spokesperson In keeping with SANVIO’s philosophy of real products for real people, they looked no further than their own circle of friends and chose a regular working woman to be the face (and neck and arms and legs and back) of the campaign for MIRAKEL. In Linda, they found a natural beauty who embraces meditation and self-care and just happens to know a lot about both the beauty and health industry. She once worked for high-end cosmetics companies selling $700 jars of beauty cream. Now Linda works with people in hospice. She’s amazed at how MIRAKEL can work in both worlds.

“I’m excited to see where it could go,” she says. “I don’t know that many women embrace their body,” says Linda. “They hate their arms, they’re embarrassed by razor burns, they’re trying to cover things up with clothes or makeup. But when the cover up comes off, the problem is still there.” “That desire to feel confident and pretty knows no age.”

Mirakel by SANVIO will be available online and over the counter November 2019. Pre-orders are available by calling 1 (888) 855-5681 or emailing RWELLS@SANVIO.com. You can also contact us through our website at www.SANVIO.com

Finding the right life balance for philanthropist, influencer and author Jean Shafiroff requires perseverance, attention to detail, and above all else, creativity. She has not only continued to distinguish herself time and again for nearly two decades, she remains someone to watch closely in the future. Known for her remarkable ability to connect different people and resources with a myriad of different charitable groups, she’s been named “the First Lady of Philanthropy” of New York by both Hello and !Hola! magazines. Dividing her time between homes on the Upper East Side and Southampton, she is one of the most successful and visible volunteer fundraisers and donors on behalf of countless charities she believes in throughout Manhattan, Long Island’s East End and increasingly internationally, just some of which include helping the underprivileged, healthcare, women’s rights and animal welfare.

Born on Long Island, the always elegantly turned out Jean has a passion for fashion as well. For nearly a decade, she has been part of the board of the Couture Council of the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology. During Fashion Week in early September, she attended many fashion shows and fashion events - and at times arm in arm with some of her favorite couturiers, including Victor dE Souza and B Michael. Jean is a sought after guest at the shows during fashion week, and can be seen in the front row at the shows of Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, and Zang Toi, among others. This year caps off another extraordinarily busy year for the two-time Columbia University graduate—who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and an MBA from Columbia Business School. This past summer in the Hamptons, Jean chaired both the Southampton Animal Foundation’s Shelter Gala and the Ellen Hermanson Foundation Gala in July. In July also, Jean officially joined the board of the Southampton Hospital Association. Not only is this her eighth board appointment, but Jean—who has chaired the Southampton Hospital Gala three times—was also honored along with her husband Martin at Stony Brook Southampton’s 61st Annual Summer Party in August. In the beginning of 2019, Jean co-chaired the Southampton Bath and Tennis Club Charitable Foundation Gala and also chaired the 64th Annual Viennese Opera Ball in Manhattan. In addition, Jean hosted a large

cocktail party in her New York City home for the New York City Mission Society Gala, where she also co-chaired the gala at Capitale. Last spring as well, Jean hosted two separate cocktail parties at her Upper East Side home; one for Surgeons of Hope and the other for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital at her Southampton home. She also has many other high-profile events planned throughout the fall and into early next year. Kicking things off, Jean will co-host a large cocktail party for the New York Women’s Foundation at the New York Historical Society. Then, October 8, Jean will co-chair the Radical Generosity Gala for the New York Women’s Foundation at the Plaza, which honors leaders in philanthropy, business, the arts and social justice. After that, she will host and chair Surgeons of Hope’s 7th Annual Charity Gala on October 15. Held at the iconic JW Essex House in Manhattan, this year’s gala will honor stage actor Diego Luna, who currently serves as Surgeons of Hope’s Heart Ambassador. Then, on October 16, Jean will co-chair the Dominican Women’s Development Center 31st Anniversary Gala. After that on November 21, Jean will co-chair chair the French Heritage Society’s New York Gala Dinner Dance – the Black and White Ball. For her philanthropy and dedication, Jean has also been honored by countless different charities, just some of which include the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, NYC Mission Society, JBFSC, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, the NY Woman’s Dominican Foundation, the Hadassah, the NYC Film Festival and Surgeons of Hope.

Jean is also the author of Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give. Widely lauded as one of the most informative guidebooks on giving, Jean’s mission for writing it was to inspire others to become involved in the philanthropic process. In her book, she also redefines the word philanthropist, stating that anyone can become a philanthropist regardless of their financial means by giving their time, knowledge and available resources. It features a special introduction by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s daughter Georgina, who discusses how she combined her background as an equestrian and a philanthropist to launch her charity, The Rider’s Closet. Jean’s highly instructive and informative book also addresses such topics as how to choose a charity and building a life around giving. Of why she decided to write the book and why she feels so passionate giving back— something Jean credits to both her parents and teachers that was instilled in her as a child growing up in suburban Long Island—Jean says: “We have an obligation to see the need in the world and take action. Yet beyond her impeccable academic credentials, philanthropic prowess and the fact that she’s an author, there’s another dimension to Jean that people revere: her sense of style. So much that she’s equally well-known as one of the best-dressed hosts who is also regarded as among America’s top party givers. Having received top rankings on many best dressed lists for her style and extensive ball gown collection, she was listed by thesalloniere.com as one of 2019’s top 100 American party givers this past January and as one of the 12 best dressed women of the world by LookOnline in 2018.

Though her number-one priority is to help support the many diverse charities and organizations she’s involved with, she also loves to have fun with fashion while hosting these galas. Summing up her passion for fashion and style, she explains: “Style is an expression of oneself. When I’m well-dressed, I feel good. Fashion is a highly creative form of art. I am in awe of the incredible vision of so many of our present-day fashion designers. My involvement on the board of the Couture Council of the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology has expanded my knowledge and love of the world of fashion. To wear and own the creations of some of our great fashion designers is a great privilege. For the past several years, I have also been collecting ball gowns. Most are the creations of American designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Mary McFadden, Zac Posen, Zang Toi, Carolina Herrera, B Michael and Victor dE Souza. Many are couture pieces. One day I plan to donate my collection to a museum. I look forward to that day. In the meantime, I am enjoying the experience of wearing them.”

Jean’s two daughters and her husband Martin are also very involved in philanthropy. A few years ago, her youngest daughter co-founded her own charity called Global Strays, which strives to promote and improve animal welfare in countries that don’t have the proper resources to do it on their own. Jean is an active board member of Global Strays, which currently funds animal rescue groups in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Columbia. Internationally, Jean is also supporting with Cherie Blair Foundation for women, as well as her recent travels to England to lend her support to Walking With the Wounded, the British charity favored by Prince Harry and designed to help former British Armed Forces servicemen and women in their career transition from the military to civilian life. Recognizing the need to promote philanthropy through multiple planforms, Jean views social media as yet another important vehicle for garnering support of various charities and encouraging others to donate their resources and volunteer their time. Towards that end, she currently has over 190,000 followers on Instagram alone. Besides supporting her favorite causes though social media, yet another passion of Jean’s is helping to promote upand-coming designers in her social media posts. Her humanitarian philosophy is apparent in everything she does. “I believe we are not just put on this earth to just to consume and to provide for ourselves and our immediate families,” she concludes. “We have an obligation to help those that have less than we do. When we share our resources, we come closer to understanding the true meaning of life.” To learn more about Jean, her favorite charities and her philanthropic activities this summer, follow her on Instagram @jeanshafiroff.

L

ove at first sight. If someone asks Matias Alem how he felt about Miami the first time he saw the city, that’s the only way he can explain it. Brazilian-born, the multicultural city grabbed his heart at age 17, and there was no coming back. He studied and obtained a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami in 2008, during the country’s toughest recession since the great depression. While some looked at all empty and unfinished condos in the ghost city that was Miami back then as a catastrophe, Matias saw an opportunity, and he went for it. In 2010 he opened BRG Homes, a boutique real estate investment and developing firm, established in the heart of South Beach. The company was created with the idea of a full-service shop, from acquisition to turn-key. His instinct for elegance, modern aesthetics, and urban design has entrenched his talented group and staff of professionals on the Golden Coast of Miami Beach, where a series of new high-end developments are bringing an influx of high net worth residents from around the world. Surrounded by the blue waters of South Florida, Miami is one emerging city not for the faint of heart. “Seeing these projects emerge like the Oceana, Aston Martin, Armani, and many others, represent a swift increase of a coastal love for all things beautiful. Nowhere in the world, you can find the combination of upscale eateries, grand beaches, art deco renovated structures with spacious condos with a fantastic view like here,” said Alem. The company has recently partnered with Oceana Bal Harbour to offer finished residences, from readyto-decorate, with pre-selected floors and walls, to the interior-designed homes created by Alem and his team. There are currently ten apartments for sale in this format, with floor plans of up to three bedrooms and footage ranging from 2,296 to 3,592 sq.ft, not including the terrace. All units will be delivered with modified floorplans, extending the living and dining room, and directing the entire area to the balcony and the breathtaking ocean view. “We are delivering with this unique partnership a once in a lifetime opportunity. The client can go and buy directly from the developer or buy it through us, which can represent hundreds of thousands of dollars more in apartment upgrades at no additional cost,” explains Matias.

MAMBO! D

ecades ago, the emergence of a new, electrifying Latin sound captured the imagination of both dancers and music fans all over the world. Known as the mambo explosion of the ‘50s, the movement had its origins in Cuba, where brothers Orestes and Israel ‘Cachao’ López had added an improvised instrumental section to the smoldering danzones they were composing for the popular orchestra Arcaño y sus Maravillas. Building and expanding on those groundbreaking innovations, artists such as Pérez Prado, Benny Moré, Tito Puente, Machito and Tito Rodríguez turned the mambo into an unstoppable cultural phenomenon – boasting a raw combustion and jazzy intensity that tropical music had never experienced until that time. The mambo fever was later replaced by the appearance of other Latin genres such as the bossa nova. Still, its basic rhythmic and harmonic elements were at the core of the salsa boom that shook New York during the ‘70s. But in a way, the classic mambo aesthetic never went out of style. It was briefly revived in 1999 by German singer Lou Bega through his electronic revision of Pérez Prado’s iconic “Mambo No. 5.” Suddenly, at the turn of the millennium, young people all over the globe were pining, like their grandparents before them, for “a little bit of mambo.” Now, the timeless mambo is about to experience a much anticipated renaissance thanks to the Miami-based project Mambo Babalú. Anchored on a fiery debut album that pays tribute to the genre’s golden era while reinventing its eclectic elements for a generation of new-millennium dancers, Mambo Babalú is much more than just a recording project. It is also an iconic lifestyle brand that combines a thoughtful reverence of the past with a global, visionary approach to the future. Mambo Babalú delves into fashion, concert events and the dancefloor for an all-encompassing experience unlike any other in contemporary Latin culture. “We created Mambo Babalú as a platform for the rediscovery and evolution of this beautiful madness known as mambo,” says Ivelín Giro, co-producer of the project together with her lifelong friend Adeline Ferro. “We are a mambo lab, where young musicians feed on the great and legendary masters of the past, experiencing and creating their own mambo and the sounds of the future.”

In essence, Mambo Babalú is a lifestyle movement that combines vintage charm with a modern, elegant beat”explains co-producer Adeline Ferro- “Because it welcomes multiple strands of music and dance, the mambo brand is able to transcend all generations and cross-cultural movements.

Fittingly, the launching pad for the Mambo Babalú brand is "I Love Mambo", a lovingly assembled album that goes far beyond merely emulating the vintage textures of the ‘50s. Boasting sumptuous production values and some of the best musicians and arrangers in the business, the collection’s 12 tracks find veteran Cuban trombonist and bandleader Julio Montalvo arranging and performing with a 23-piece big band. Montalvo is none other than the son of Celso Valdés, member of pioneering charanga ensemble Orquesta Aragón. He also performed in some of the first mambo recordings to see the light of day in Cuba during the ‘50s. The project’s guest vocalists are Mayito Rivera – for over 20 years, lead singer with Cuba’s quintessential tropical group Los Van Van – and the enchanting Lucrecia, the Havana-born, Spain-based chanteuse, equally adept at performing spirited guarachas and velvety boleros. Among the guest musicians, tropical music aficionados will recognize such luminaries as jazz pianist José Negroni and virtuoso vibraphone player Alfredo Chacón. "I Love Mambo" album repertoire delivers stunning readings of old-school favorites such as Pérez Prado's internationally famous "Qué Rico Mambo" (first single of the album); Beny More's classics "Locas por el Mambo" and "Dolor y Perdón"; “Obsesión” -by Puerto Rican songwriter Pedro Flores and recorded by Moré as a duet with Mexican crooner Pedro Vargas-; Tito Rodriguez's (one of the three mambo kings) "Mamagüela"; and Margarita Lecuona’s “Babalú,” (the second single). The album also includes two original compositions by Montalvo – the endearingly humorous “Roberto El Millonario” and a moving tribute to the musical genius of Machito - round up the album.

er ro F e n i l e d A

Judging by the stunning artistic quality of this debut, it is expected that Mambo Babalú will generate an ongoing series of mambo-themed albums – much like the Buena Vista Social Club launched the Cuban son revival of the late ‘90s. Mambo Babalú also thrives on the concert stage. A tour will soon follow, enhanced by the dance component that originally turned New York’s Palladium nightclub into a mythical venue for mambo dancers of all cultures and ethnicities. “In essence, Mambo Babalú is a lifestyle movement that combines vintage charm with a modern, elegant beat,” explains co-producer Adeline Ferro. Both Ferro and Giro are of Cuban origin. The inspiration for launching Mambo Babalú stems from a genuine love for their cultural roots, as well as a deep understanding of the place of honor that the mambo era occupies within the timeline of Afro-Caribbean music history. “Mambo was born in Cuba, grew up in Mexico and got madness in New York,” enthuses Giro. “Mambo Babalú is a turn up experience and invitation to millennials and all generations to celebrate life together.” “Because it welcomes multiple strands of music and dance, the mambo brand is able to transcend all generations and cross-cultural movements,” adds Ferro. “We’re creating a nostalgic experience that addresses the glorious past of this music, while at the same time introducing it to young people of all backgrounds who move to the same vibrational tune.” She pauses to reflect, as the timeless strains of a mambo tune can be heard pulsating in the background. “Mambo is still as vital as it ever was,” she says, then adds with a laugh: “I think of it as the ten commandments of music.” - ERNESTO LECHNER -

Talk about your practice...I have been practicing Aesthetics for over fifteen years. My first job was in New York City working on Fifth Avenue for a company called Skin Klinic. Skin Klinic was one of the first companies which blended a medical model with a business model. I was hired fresh out of graduate school. My previous experience in nursing was cardiac with a focus on health promotion and wellness. I perceived Botox Cosmetic and Dermal fillers a natural extension of promoting good health. Fast forward, after “playing my dues” in the industry, Virtual Skin Spa was born. As a Family Nurse Practitioner with an extensive experience in Aesthetics my goal was to reduce some of the barriers of entry into Aesthetics. I wanted to make it more affordable, less scary, more relaxed with an element of fun with a healthy respect for the reality we are practicing Aesthetics. Where are you from originally? I consider Alabama as my home though I was born in New Jersey.

Why NYC? Not to be trite but isn’t New York the city of dreams…. If you can make it there you can make it anywhere…. I guess growing up in Alabama I somehow internalized those notions. Tell me about your experience. What made you get into the field of nursing and beauty? I identified my gift as a healer, caretaker

and nurse as a very young child. I always felt a need to care for things which were somehow broken or damaged. I remember rescuing a bird, a hatchling which had fallen from a nest onto the sidewalk. I remember taking the tiny creature with no wings and preparing a makeshift nest in a shoebox. I tried my best to keep the bird alive, trying to feed it worms I dug from the ground- of course it eventually died. I was devastated. I remember reading the Boy Scout manual Chapter 7 First Aid and Life saving. …... Also, as I mentioned earlier I found my passion for Aesthetics with my first role as an injector at Skin Klinic.

What makes you the best? I do not believe I am the best. I do know with complete confidence I am highly skilled. What sets me apart from other practioners is my openness, creativity, honesty, loyalty and when it comes to budgetary concerns I get it!

How do you view aging, natural process or something that people can change? I read an article several years ago which I believe is relevant - Middle age no longer exists, “ hello to the age of the Perennials” … Perennials are a type of person, that is ever blooming, stays current with technology and the World and has friends of all ages. Aging is a natural progression of life. I consider myself a perennial. What modern techniques in the beauty field are helping this cause? The list goes on and on but one of the most recent which comes to mind is Emsculpt- we now have a modality which can build muscle- so its anti aging for muscles!!!! First and only in its class which is FDA cleared for abdomen, buttocks biceps, and triceps… Amazing technology! I do love our skincare care Lust line... l cleanse with Virtual Clean, exfoliate with our Glow pads alternating with our Vitamin C pads and follow with LUST RX which has a proprietry ingredient. I recently added Nectifirm by Revision skincare which I had carried for awhile which my clients raved about! Also, I love our laser genesis and try to make time for a treatment twice a month which helps keep my skin glowing and pores tight.

What do you do on a constant basis to get better at it? I believe

continuing education is paramount. I continue to invest in my development as an injector. I just mastered the Y lift which is a technique of injecting dermal filler which was trademarked by Dr. Yon Trokel. I am very proud to be one of his proteges.

What do people ask you for the most? The younger patients, the

millennial, is seeking lip fillers and Botox Cosmetic and more recently the trend is cheek augmentation and jawline filler attempting to reshape their face. Then I have the male clientele who favor jawline defining, Botox cosmetic and skincare. Then I have the “ageless” client who is seeking complete facial rejuvenation incorporating skin tightening, laser resurfacing, intensive skincare in combination with dermal fillers and Botox cosmetic.

What do you think women want in terms of the body, wellness, and looks? Many women and men present with realistic expectations (which

we must qualify through the consultative process) wanting to be an improved version of themselves. Others present idealizing the Kardashians and seeking to emulate their appearance. It is a more - "I want to look good" deal or there is an inner layer that has to do with aging. I believe that we must embrace the aging process. I have been an eyewitness as women become more beautiful with age... I have also witnessed women become bitter with aging.

How do you stay in shape, nutrition? I try to eat a balanced diet and keep a fitness app on my phone. Lately I have been into the keto craze! We have a gym across the hall in the Long Island office and sometimes if I have a break in the day I will pop over for a quick workout. Also we purchased the Emsculpt machine this year and in lieu of lunch somedays I treat myself to 20,000 sit ups in 30 minutes. Where do you like to relax? I love to relax in my garden. When I am not working making people more beautiful, I love to nurture flowers and grow a beautiful flower garden. Hobbies? I love to travel ! I love the cultures of different people. Growing up in the deep South, there was always pressure to conform. As I moved away from these ideas, I have embraced diversity. Wherever I go I will always visit a local spa, beauty salon, Medspa or "ladies pharmacy" as it was called in Morocco to learn of their "beauty secrets". Upon returning from Morocco one year ago, I was inspired to add Pure Lust to our skincare line which contains pure Argon sourced from Morocco. Pure Argon oil is harvest from the Argon tree and is endemic to Morocco. The oil is amazing for skin, hair, nails and is good for all skin types.
