1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki entitled Architecture and the City in South East Europe, 18/1-26/2/2012. Press conference at the City Hall of Thessaloniki, Friday 13/1/2012 Dear friends, It is a great honor and pleasure for the School of Architecture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki to be participating along with the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in the 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki entitled Architecture and the City in South East Europe, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut The event has been organized under the auspices of Thessaloniki’s Municipality. Inaugurated in 2012, an anniversary year for Thessaloniki, it is part of a series of events organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism called Thessaloniki 2012, Southeastern Europe, Cultural Crossroads. It should be noted that Thessaloniki’s 1st International Architecture Biennale is an important cultural institution, not only for the city of Thessaloniki but also for the country. Certainly, as an implementation process and resulting event, the 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki has never tried to be and was never born in the purple. On the contrary, it was an arduously, spontaneous and self-actualized project that involved a two year creative collaboration between individuals and institutions from the educational and cultural sectors, including the School of Architecture, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Goethe Institut, and the Municipality, who jointly worked to this long-term initiative through productive planning and implementation leading to an exceptional result, in spite of the times. The 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki is being presented during an anniversary year of major importance for the city and it has emerged as a privileged location for an expanded and fruitful multi-cultural discussion concerning the role of architecture in the modern city, in the wake of globalization, environmental degradation and economic crisis. 22 Schools of Architecture from 17 cities of Southeastern Europe have creatively para multiplicity of fertile, enduring and multifaceted approaches to the subject, in architecture education, in their School and in their city. This event is an opportunity for joint experiences, an opportunity for dialogue, an opportunity - among other things - for the creation of a network of Schools of Architecture aiming to plan future joint actions in the name of architecture and culture. It is widely known that in all countries, professors or groups of professors and students of Architectural Schools are involved in the planning and urban design of their cities, are active in the formation and the development of educational and cultural institutions. They organize the participation of the city in major cultural events, plan important artistic interventions, buildings and public spaces and participate in the implementation of many architectural competitions concerning areas or buildings in the city. As D.A Fatouros stressed in 1993, in his book entitled Thessaloniki: Survival or a big city “A city is not an engineering structure, it is not the solution for some of the serious


problems of the city, nor the development of certain entrepreneurial forces, it is the overall development of its culture”1. Culture here refers to the multiplicity of its establishments, not only as a creative activity but as a perspective for policy-making as well and as a component of the quality of life in the city and its housing complexes. History and Nature are being introduced under new terms to the culture of the area, to urban design and architecture2. The 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki entitled Architecture and the City in South East Europe includes a large Architectural exhibition on the same at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, and will be held at the exhibition halls of the 5 Museums (Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, State Museum of Contemporary Art, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Byzantine Culture, Teloglion Foundation of Art, AUTh) until February 26. Participants include twenty two architectural schools from seventeen cities throughgrade, Skopje, Bucharest, Nicosia, Athens, Volos, Patra, Chania, Xanthi and of course Thessaloniki. Each architectural school entertains a special, varied and multifaceted relationship with the culture of its city and this shared characteristic constitutes the As the host institution of this event, the School of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the only participant whose contribution differs from the others. Rather than present the results of the School’s Program of Studies through the students’ projects, it has opted to organize an active workshop entitled City cracks! Architecture in the cracks of the city which will be held before and during the exhibition at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, from research and creative process, will serve as the exhibit. As clearly enunciated in its subject line: “The workshop will attempt to explore the contemporary urban experience through its expression in public space. Starting with the diverse and multifaceted experience of the modern metropolis, the workshop will investigate the role of design in the emergence of fertile ruptures in the non-negotiable context of contemporary urban conditions; ruptures that allow for the emergence of Nature, Culture and History, the negotiation of a coexistence with heterogeneity and the “other”, the unfolding of creativity, and the claim to collectivity in the city under crisis”. The intensive workshop includes twenty students from the School of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering of AUTh, three tutors (Evangelia Athanasiou, Anastasios Tellios, Stavros Vergopoulos) and a jury of three professors (Aleka Alexopoulou, Alkmini Paka and Rena Sakellaridou). 1 Fatouros D. The exhibition entitled Architecture and the City in South East Europe will open with three days of presentations and events beginning with an Open Discussion on

temporary Art. A keynote speech by architect Elias Zenghelis, professor at the Institute of Berlage (Postgraduate Studio of Architecture) in Rotterdam, on Urban Interventions: From Public to Common Space will follow. zariston, where the State Museum of Contemporary Art will hold the opening of a Composition-Construction-Production. Russian Avant-Garde and Contemporary Art. The 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki on Architecture and the City in South East Europe tion entitled Young Architects from Germany, a series of urban actions in various public spaces throughout Thessaloniki entitled Urban Games, an exhibition-presentation on The Studio of Architectural Education, a lecture on Public Space and City Rehabilitation Improvement Projects of Ljubljana - and a small colloquium entitled Thessaloniki, Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir. The extremely interesting exhibition Young Architects from Germany will be presented at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art. The exhibition is produced and realized by the Institute of Foreign Cultural Affairs (IFA) and the Federal Chamber of Architects (BAK) of Germany and will open on Wednesday 18/2 at 19.30. The urban actions in public spaces throughout the city’s historical center entitled, Urban Games, is organized by Socrates Stratis, Professor of the School of Architecture of the University of Cyprus and a team of forty volunteers from the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art’s educational programme. In the exhibition-presentation entitled The Studio of Architectural Education Professor Ferhan Yuerekli and Professor Irem Falay, from the School of Architecture of ITU (Istanbul Technical University) will present their version of architectural research and teaching. The lecture on Public Space and City Rehabilitation Improvement Projects of Ljubljana by Karel Pollak, professor of the School of Architecture of Ljubljana and an executive member of the local municipal government, will present proposals for urban design within the medieval core of his city. Finally a conference entitled Thessaloniki, Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir will be presented as a special event at the Teloglion in collaboration with the Museum’s friends. The printing was done at Kakiousis Digital Printing, Yiouvanis Dimitris and at the printing company of George Skordopoulos. As part of this event, students participated voluntarily from our School of Architecture and also from the Postgraduate Program in Museology. 2012 marks the 100 anniversary of the liberation of the city of Thessaloniki as well as the First edition of the Architecture Biennale, which aims to become a tradition and to create a new chapter in the city’s multicultural events. As an Emeritus Professor and former Head of the School of Architecture of AUTh, to me this occasion represents This great architectural event was initiated through the dynamic intervention of the School of Architecture’s current Head, Mr. G. Papakostas, and has been made possible through the active participation of the School’s faculty members, the Macedonian support of Goethe Institute and lastly the undivided support of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Architecture and the City in Southeast Europe. This major event, which inaugurates the start of the city’s anniversary year, is presented within the framework of Thessaloniki 2012, Southeastern Europe, Cultural Crossroads. Public anniversaries are an occasion to evoke memories of the past, to contemplate the present and to plan for the future. Therefore, these cultural events are not random coincidences, because randomness is not an element of planning. As with preceding Biennales which act as the bearers of new thoughts and ideas, this Biennale was conceived as a latent idea two years ago amongst many imponderable factors, in order

of interest that threaten our living space, the initial idea for the biennial evolved into a productive design, deriving mainly from the conclusion that there was a need of such events in our city. A city which, until the 1950s-60s, was a living museum of archiDue to the political and economic conditions of the past decades, the urban environment of the city has changed, in a functional but also in an aesthetic sense, and lost one of its strongest cards with the unlimited and morphologically uncontrollable use of monolithic apartment blocks. While referring to the past without wanting to criticize, we should focus on the recent emergence of notable cultural events mentioned above, as opposed to the ghosts of lost cultural opportunities, such as the EXPO, and the continuous postponement of the Thessaloniki International Fair’s design program. Along with the negative there are also positive aspects to these changes, including the development of the city’s eastern and western areas, the establishment of pedestrian streets, bus lanes, bike-lanes and the metro, as well as future plans for trams and maritime transport. In Thessaloniki, there are hopeful signs that point towards a substantial improvement of its citizens’ quality of life. Furthermore, through noteworthy presentations and events in museums and art galleries that have taken various forms, architecture has acquired the place that it deserves, both in terms of urban planning and design, as well as in the exhibition programs of museums. The people of Thessaloniki can attend and get acquainted with international views on new developments in the arts. Why should we be actively present and co-partners in


such quality large-scale events? To quickly generate new ideas, creative ideas, using novel formats. We are here to break the barrier of distrust; to dissolve negative perceptions, oblivious to the fear of uncertainty which tends to dominate us, by believing and hoping in the future recovery of our society. Our history is full of events that weaken us but we do not back down because we have

In April 2010, the directors and the cultural managers of the Goethe Institutes of South-Eastern Europe met in Thessaloniki in order to discuss and coordinate their actions and also get acquainted with the Goethe-Institute Thessaloniki, the city and the collaborating institutions. In the framework of this meeting, we visited the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and met with its President, Mrs. Xanthippi Scarpia-Heupel as well as with the Head of the School of Architecture AUTh, Mr. George Papakostas. This meeting led to the realization of the 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki in which the South-Eastern Europe Goethe’s Institutes participated, coordinated by the Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki. The Institutes from Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Macedonia, FYROM, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey and Greece supported the participation of the Schools of Architecture in the Biennale, contributing in this way to the network of Architecture Biennials that take place in the broader region.

We would like to thank the Organizers of the 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki and especially George Papakostas and the School of Architecture, for giving us the opportunity to be involved in the creation of such an important institution, as well as Xanthippi Scarpia-Heupel for her continuous and inspiring presence through this process. Special thanks are also due to all the participants in this Biennale and to the students that worked voluntarily in order to make this project possible. The 22 schools of architecture participating in this Biennale, trace a broad spectrum of architectural concepts and vision, such as the major themes of time, habitation, history, memory, scale, collectivity, commons, adaptive reuse, community and privacy - always in relation with urban space and with the city itself. All contributing institutions were encouraged to create their installations, for this particular event and for this particular meeting. The drawings, models, performances and video presentations displayed around the schools to the urban discussion. We hope that each participation had a good chance to inside their own academic hinterland. Despite the broad geographic diffusion of the 22 schools and the historic difference of their academic backgrounds, we have the feeling of a community structured around focal architectural questions. These can potentially be echoed, through the unexpected proximities and intense relations structuring the dense network that connects together the dispersed islets, in the totality of the archipelago. The structure of the show was built upon a three days ‘cascade’ of 23 sequel presentations of architectural exhibits by their authors, creating a ground of mutual exchange of ideas about architecture and its education. As we very well know, despite the fact that architecture is always present in every conventional ‘show’. However, we are convinced, that in the course of this particular exhibition, we witnessed the expressive power of various approaches to architecture and to the city, as they are developed across South-East Europe. We hope that in the midst of the present day crisis, the experimental proposals and problematics tabled to us by the newest generation of architects, as they are currently incubated in their schools, provide us with some kind of urban hope. We feel that as community we do deserve such a hope, as Architecture itself deserves a restart.

Faculty of Architecture, University SS. Cyril and Methodius City: Skopje Reclaiming the City In the past decades cities in SEE have been passing through a period of profound change. This change has affected the cities at all levels: spatial, social and cultural. Schools of architecture are deeply embedded in the social context and obliged to respond to it. They, too, are changing. They are not anymore institutions of linear education, but are becoming complex networks of interaction among people. We see each school as a small city in itself, which continuously constructs exciting virtual cities that are constantly changing. from the very beginning to the diploma project. It shows different levels of consciousness about architectural space in the process of learning and the belief that architecture in the city can exist only as part of the complex intertwining of public and private spaces, in a relationship from which both acquire higher quality.

The University of Architecture and Urbanism ‘Ion Mincu’ City: Bucharest VIZAVI // The Beauty of Strange Cohabitation The University of Architecture and Urbanism Ion Mincu from Bucharest participates to the “Architecture and the City in SE Europe” workshop with a special-designed project that focuses on the relationship between our University and Bucharest by touching on two complementary points: 1. Presenting the ways in which our University understands to deal with the highly complex and controversial character of Bucharest. 2. Presenting Bucharest as a highly valuable urban material for architectural In order to express these, our workshop project approaches a particular reality of Bucharest considered by us as eloquent to a certain spirit of Bucharest: the colliding realities, the cohabitation of different historical parts of the city without planned urban thinking. We will present two sites from the center of the city that contain the superposition of at least three urban historical natures: the interwar city / the communist city / the contemporary city. All these Our project focuses on the methods used in trying to come to terms with all these a single whole. Understanding this complexity is an act of constructing a method of putting the bases for any project that deals with this reality. It is an ethical attitude. It is a pedagogical objective.

Frederick University, School of Architecture, Fine and Applied Arts City: Nicosia Nicosia, the Default Location of Memories Frederick University is located in close proximity to the ‘buffer zone’ in Nigardens, alleys and even domestic/residential spaces. It has become both the default location for memories that people can choose not to deal with and the sion. The emergence of invisible political boundaries has led to partition and erasure, new systems, rules and transgressions, and the appropriation of space and surface at a range of scales. Being a witness of this division has resulted ing desire, nostalgia, reminiscence, and imagination. The link between memof divided cities. This has resulted in residual spaces and structures where paradox is perceptibly present. The divided city presents a physical border, a border thicker than an imaginary line in space, where the two sides are able to confront one another with their own representations and assert their national imaginings through symbols in the landscape. Far more than being merely the contested terrain upon which seemingly irreconcilable struggle for power, the city of Nicosia has produced its own distinctive mix of urban cultures, spatial practices, physical connections, and political institutions and above all is a place of intense creativity. It is Nicosia as a ‘contested terrain’ that forms the source of inspiration and conceptual basis of the students’ work presented for this exhibition. The projects are noteworthy in their scope, and sensitive to the city’s social and physical contexts.

Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Polytechnic University of Tirana City: Tirana Time and the City The aim of the pavilion is to create a panorama about the research and vision of the architecture school in Tirana related to the city and urban environment. The presentation consists of three basic lines: 1. Tradition (Past) Berat is the city that represents one of the most unique historical urban environments in the region. The features of the city are represented through a graphical analysis. In this section is presented the project PIR BERATI developed in collaboration with the ESTP in Paris (France). 2. City (Present) This section introduces the Albanian city of today by offering fragments of atmosphere and urban moments. The presentation consists of a photographical selection from the photography summer school TIRANAFIELDS that aimed a thematic exploration of the suburb of Tirana. The project was developed in collaboration with the DAU of the Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy). 3. Vision (Future) Thoughts, concepts, analysis and tendencies are presented through a selection from the recent design studio projects and diploma works related to city thematic and its actual challenges. This is the prevalent section of our pavilion.

Department of Architecture, Technical University of Crete City: Chania The city within the contemporary social, environmental and technological environment. The presented work is organized around three themes exploring the social, envi-

and public space and the ways these are synthesized through design. The urban void, free city space, the building as an object and the building as a node in an urban cultural and physical network, are some of the issues the theme is engaged with. The second theme looks into the environmental aspect of the city and the potential convergence of environmental architectural systems with digital form generation processes in architectural design. Environmental thinking and design cannot be looked at as a separate phase in the architectural design processes. Integration is inevitable in an era when the climatic crisis presents itself as a maurban experience and environmental perception of the city. From the extended use of cellphones, locative media practices, augmented and layar reality, we are witnessing a time of continuous integration of the digital with the physical aspects of the city questioning the architects’ role in shaping urban experiences. The work aims at representing the school as a place of novelty and active research, an energetic environment where continuous transmission and exchange of knowledge takes place, synthesizing the disparate phenomena of the contemporary city, bringing together interdisciplinary knowledge and research activity.

Iuav University of Venice City: Venice Landscape Architecture, Urban and Sustainable Design at the Università Iuav di Venezia In the context of the present social and economic crisis, the revaluation of architecture as theoretical expression and as knowledge process seems to us a In this sense it is very important to conceive an architecture of relations and not simply an architecture of objects, i.e. to study the role of architecture in a wider geographical, historical, social context and in a wider multidisciplinary context, to use architecture as a tool of knowledge and design of the spatial, physical and social transformation of the environment. The innovative concepts of Landscape and of Sustainability have integrated our more traditional interest for the relationship between architecture and city. The three master courses entitled “Urban Design”, “Landscape Architecture”, “Sustainable Design” has produced in the last years at the Iuav a wide range of experiences leading to innovative answers to the complexity of architectural and urban issues in the contemporary society, renewing the old tradition of our school founded in the 60’s of last century with the seminal studies by G. Samonà, A. Rossi, C. Aymonino, G. De Carlo, V. Gregotti, etc. The projects presented at the exhibition allow to construct a partial retrospective vision of the interweaving of didactics, project research and theoretical production of our School. The topics of the following theses seem to suggest as architecture, with its various scales, can be understood both as a tool to learn about the world of today and a means to improve tomorrow’s one. In relation to these evaluations, training of architects of the future generations can only appear decisive.

School of Architecture, Polytechnic of Bari City: Bari Forms and spaces of contemporary Mediterranean City. Classical principles and new paradigms The School of Architecture of Bari has a consolidated tradition of studies about the architecture of the city, with special reference to the Mediterranean city. In the section “Cities of Stone” of 10.Mostra Internazionale di Architettura of Biennale di Venezia (2006), supervised by Claudio D’Amato Guerrieri, the School expressed its idea of Mediterranean city through the illustration of some paradigmatic historical architectures, described with regard to their constitutive characters (morphological, typological, spatial and constructive). In line with the Italian tradition of urban studies, we believe that architecture, conceived as “science of urban facts”, is still the only discipline capable, transformations. We could say that it isn’t possible for us to think of architecture without assuming its urban value. We know how to “read” this relation between architecture and city into the experience of the historical city and In our studies, the search of this form, founded on the recognition of the values of our time, is conducted through an analytical/design process based on the knowledge of the historical settlement structures. This process, through the use of the conceptual tools of the modern thought (analogy, abstraction), city and, at the same time, to maintain a relation of “critical tension” toward the historical city and its forms. Therefore, our approach rejects the development model of the contemporary relations between “architectures”. As an alternative to this model and against to the approach that sustains it, our research proposes an idea of city based on the formal identity of its spaces/places and on their recognizability. Among the issues addressed in our research (urban space, housing models...), the most challenging is the construction of new urban settlements in non-urbanized contexts. On this subject our research has been particularly focused in recent years trying to develop a theory. It concerns the problem of form of 30 31

new urban expansions and it has, for us, a strategic value because it allows to express new ideas of city. According to us, these ideas of city should be based on the understanding of the relation between city and nature. We believe, in fact, that the relation between the architectural forms of the city and the “physical” forms of nature Since nature, no longer seen as “isotropic” outer space toward which the city urban construction.

University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture City: Belgrade All Inclusive H2O Volos Exhibition All Inclusive H2O Volos explains key elements of methodology implemented in this research by design project, consisted of theses followed by architectural design and conclusion based on its results. Program of All Inclusiveness in connection to theoretical inquiry of H2O phenomena and interpretation of water-paysage of the bay of Volos was the research background in general. Exhibition explores work of 10 students, emphasizing the case study in a form of visual essay - formal layout of each thematic approach – consisted of short video and series of spatial models. The scope of this Master Project derives from a conceptual investigation of an architectural form and its potential in the circumstances of its space and program boundaries, as well as capacity of its autonomy. Such implication exceed the simple representation of an architectural form, emphasizing its thematic framework leading to instruments of a design of its realization and architectural notion of the particular in general or inclusive. Department of Architecture, University of Patras City: Patra Groundworks the identities of public spaces manifest themselves. The exploration, through the educational process, of new approaches to the organization, design and materiality of the urban ground, highlights critical issues for contemporary urbanscapes and contribute in the discourse related to the future image of our cities. The projects presented in this exhibition, study the transformations of the cityground through different design approaches/strategies and scales (from urban design to single buildings). They attempt, each one from its own standpoint, to produce new public situations, wherever they discover the opportunity in the city or in its periphery. Some projects use “creative urban planning” interventions into unclaimed city zones, alongside transportation networks, sea fronts, and other ambiguous city grounds. Other proposals experiment with morphogenetic processes, programmatic hybridization, and construction or material techniques. Finally, there are proposals which project an experiential relationship with the built and natural landscape, either adopting the logic of environmentally conscious “soft interventions”, in accordance with the landscape and the cyclic changes of seasons, or else, devising dramatic land geometries and narratives. The projects on the wall are organized horizontally; there are three main thematic groups, (landmarks, axes and city border lines, residual city areas) which run diagonally along the three horizontal stripes, (see related diagram), and vertically; each project is placed in one of the three horizontal strips (above, middle, below) according to its “behaviour” and position in relation to the ground level (raised, levelled to the city ground or going underground). Nevertheless, this is a loose categorization, as it is evident, that in many cases the categories overlap and the projects defy strict grouping. The second unit of the exhibition consists of a table with selected books (the34 35

oretical theses), containing research work of our students on subjects related to urban phenomena, submitted recently in our school. The body of work presented occupies a geographical area that covers the whole of South-Eastern Europe (Nicosia, Athens, Patras, Aegean, sites in Italy), and we aim to highlight the connections of those various locations with the place where these projects originate from, the Architecture School of Patras. The visitors of the exhibition are escorted by images and fragments of the colloquial life within the school, the presence of students and academic staff, and familiar (to us) images of the landscape surrounding our School.

Department of Architecture, University of Cyprus City: Nicosia Design Oriented Urbanities The Department of Architecture, University of Cyprus, encourages students and operate simultaneously on a territorial scale and on that of proximity. In this way, both architecture as practice and architect as part of an urban actors’ system, become part of the pedagogical culture. This is taught through various courses on a research by design approach, presented at the exhibition. The notion of urbanity is used explicitly as the main topic of 3rd year urban design studio. That is why it was chosen as the driving force of the exhibition Design Oriented Urbanities and its pedagogical dimensions formulated by Socrates Stratis, assistant professor at the Department. The pedagogical aim behind this theoretical work lies on enrich the possibilities of architecture and urban design to get actively engaged with contemporary society issues. Furthermore, it enriches the culture of architecture as agency of change towards a political city. A “Dictionary of Project Oriented Urbanities”* is an open archive created by S. Stratis from student work both from a 3rd year urban design studio, concentrated on the concept of urbanity, and through an elective course on the notion of game as part of encouraging urbanity through urban design practice. The form of the exhibition is organized in such a way as to inform further the on-going Dictionary by: relate to the theme of the exhibition Urbanity

environments between four characteristics: accessibility, sharing, transgressing edge conditions and polarities. Through such approach three major issues were put forward. Mathematics provides an underlying layer for the description of reality’s inner complexity in terms of computation as well as the tools to enhance and intensify research and expression, elegantly and seamlessly linking science, art,

Our incubator is a light and low ceiling formed by the repetitive but continuously varied pattern of a carton basket. An ‘egg’, a fragile architectural object is placed in each basket. The overpopulated structure stands, above our heads, as the fertile landscape/ cloud of ideas in progress. Committed, Creative and Dialogical The structure and contents of the UACEG presentation focus on three interrelated topics: 1. Context: Bulgarian settlements of today resulting from centuries long development of cultural and spatial identity and the recent dynamics of societal change: The profound political changes, economic and social restructuring undergone during the recent two decades, the growing dynamics of the present world proaches, resulted in new spatial and architectural patterns in Bulgarian cities and gave birth to both challenges and opportunities. Current practice in urban planning and architectural design provides the visual expression of neoliberal approaches in a society of growing contrasts; new development and regeneration schemes change the morphology of the historic settlements with the promise for a better urban future. 2. A changing educational system: The efforts and results of integrating innovative approaches into the traditional higher education of Architecture and Urbanism: motivated new foci of creative interest. The Faculty curriculum has provided space for a new Programme in Urbanism and a variety of new optional modules for students in Architecture. Studio work is opening up to broader IT implementation in urban analysis and architectural design. University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture City: Belgrade Open Systems The segment of the exhibition, titled Open systems, will showcase the proture, University of Belgrade. The challenge set was in the understanding the changes that contemporary institutions are faced with and developing research and design skills to surpass the application of traditional typologies in architecture. The Cultural Centre as an ever-changing institution and hotel Metropol as a dying institution that needs a crucial change, both possess potential for applying such approach. Cultural centre is perceived as a mediator between the public and the artists. The idea is to blur the boundary between the place of art production and the public in order to let interaction become a part of the architecture. Hotel Metropol was built in 1957 but has not been in use since 2004. We perceived it as a completely organized and rigid system with no potential of coexisting in developing urban context. Its balance is being disrupted by implementing a new program inside the object. The goal of the projects was to examine how architecture can absorb different social structures of its users in order to redevelop itself.

Istanbul Kultur University City: Istanbul Dwelling in the City We live in Istanbul… But, how? At which space, at what time? Are the houses we dwell in suitable for us? Do we use the possibilities produced by the metropolitan area? To what extent architecture might intervene with the everyday life? What is the social role of an architect? What is the public face of dwelling? Might environmental sustainability be a reference for development of city life? These questions and many more were discussed for producing new approaches to dwelling concept for improving everyday life in Istanbul. Fourth grade students studied in seven different groups leaded by four studio instructors and four research assistants. Various project sites were determined in Istanbul, and studio processes were executed separately by each group following differentiated teaching methods. Discussions were based on several parameters: Distance, image, prestige, size, view, public space, social relations. The common topic was to design houses for a group of people ranging from 350 to 1000 according to the size of the project area and the priorities in each studio. By participating in the Architectural Exhibition entitled “Architecture and the City in South East Europe”, the fourth grade studio instructors at Istanbul Kultur University Department of Architecture aim to demonstrate how students tackle the problem of the integrating buildings with the city and vice versa through the media of housing in social and physical terms.

The workshop investigates the role of architectural design in revealing fruitful ‘cracks’* in the seemingly inevitable urban condition: cracks that can allow nature to reassert its existence, terms of coexistence to be renegotiated, creativity to unfold, collectivity to be reinvented in the city of crisis. Taking the urban experience -collective or individual- as a point of departure, this workshop does not only seek to design a new functionality, but explores the possibilities of a new urban condition. 48 49

The main concept is: Citizens Speak- Architects React. What do we mean by that? In times like these, that dictate dynamic lives, people lack socialization and integration with their cities. Open public spaces, such as squares, were once built and meant to gather people and make them interact. Today, those places are more often loosing their purpose. We tend to give them back their purpose. At the same time, to give back the socialization to the people. Naturaly, those two are very important segments, both for the city to live to its fullest and for the citizens, to start interacting and feeling their city. School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens City: Athens Metropolitan Space in a Period of Crisis and the Architectural Challenges The relation between architecture and the city can only be placed in the center of architectural education. Under what conditions does architecture emerge The activity of an architectural school cannot but refer to the city, and cannot but be related to an actual city example. The primary, foremost and fascinating precedent for the School of Architecture of NTUA is Athens itself - the capital Greek city and its metropolitan territory. From this example, the discussion on architecture can be extended to the research of the metropolitan expansion as a global phenomenon, or as a phenomenon concerning regional areas. It imposes questions on the position and intervention of architecture within contemporary urban circumstances, and ultimately, on the ways in which architectural substance determines the genre and ethos of the space we live in. The School of Architecture of NTUA attempts to challenge the Athenian metropolitan territory, and to comprehend, at the same time, the architectural and urban conditions indicated by other Greek cities. Finally it addresses a series of critical urban phenomena related to economic compression, to collateral collapse of social web as well as to environmental degradation. Istanbul Technical University City: Istanbul Projections for Istanbul As the metropolis becomes a less hierarchical and more dynamic whole and layers and layers of more distributed networks of loosely associated parts; conditions created by the dynamics of the metropolis require new ways to read and work on the city. The studio thus becomes a critical venue for the generation of urban architectural knowledge. Consequently, the studio transforms into a media where instrumental utopian and/or dystopian narratives are developed/proposed to propel projective thinking and to enable proactive design for the new dynamic and ever changing setting at hand. Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh), Department of Architectural Engineering City: Xanthi Matter-Shape-City This installation is a combination of a number of student projects in the Arof the visual arts and building construction workshops, experimenting with light and trying to create space through it. The video was based on the Black Theatre technique and is a mixture of technical means and a choreography. (At the same time, another construct was created, whose outline forms the basis for this projection.) The video is viewed through this screen trying to introduce a third dimension to the show itself. Initially, the amorphous matter creates man and his surroundings. He then gradually molds his primal terrain in basic shapes and orders. They evolve into space and their repetition creates the urban environment where man inNow, in this context, digital information becomes the dominant element for furthering development. It structures access and distribution networks and occupies time rather than space. In this frame of reference we try to simulate Matter - Shape - City - Information.

The chosen projects are from different departments – Department of Preservation of architectural heritage, Department of Urban planning, etc. The projects are created in the two semesters in the school year 2010/2011. In the school projects the students get a task with real parameters, situation and requirements. Interior and Environmental Design Department, Kadir Has University City: Istanbul In a time where architecture is temporary, how can interior design be timeless? In a time where the city is rapidly changing with mega projects that are more responsive to real-estate trends, how can interior design rise above the fashionable? In a time where general perception of the interior design as a discipline does not go far beyond the walls, how can interior designers bring urban experience come alive in and around the buildings? As the Department of Interior and Environmental Design at Kadir Has University, we strongly advocate that interior design should be approached as a cross-section of all design disciplines dealing with multiple scales ranging from the scale of everyday objects to the city. At Kadir Has, we see the interior as a medium where one can extend design to unique spatial experience including that of the urban context. Hence, the interior design program at Kadir Has University is an architecturally oriented program with emphasis on spatial design rather than surface embellishment. with interior designer’s sensitivity to human scale, bringing urban experience into interiors through rigorous environmental analysis, and working in historical settings. Located by the Golden Horn at the heart the historic peninsula of Istanbul, we are inspired by our presence in a unique campus that was recognized by Europa Nostra Cultural Heritage Award. Faculty with diverse academic backgrounds combined with adjuncts who are practicing professionals enable us to collaboratively challenge and push limits of interior design and encourage a learning process based on the experience of space in various scales. The School of Architecture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Thessaloniki, Goethe Institutes across South East Europe and the ‘Five Museums Movement’ (Archaeological Museum, Museum of Byzantine Culture, State Museum of Contemporary Art, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, and Telloglion Foundation of Art, AUTh) led by the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, are honoured and overjoyed to be participating in the organization of the 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki 2012, entitled ‘Architecture and the City in South East Europe’. izing and participating in this major academic and cultural event. The main corpus of the 1st International Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki consists of a large-scale Exhibition of Architecture (January-February 2012) in which each school will exhibit projects related to their contribution to the public and social spaces of their city. The large-scale Exhibition of Architecture aims to initiate a discussion on the role of the schools of architecture in issues pertaining to architecture and urbanism. This is

explore the complicated problems faced by cities in terms of the production of structured, articulated, and multi-layered architectural proposals and interventions. The short-term result is the implementation of the exhibition. But the discussion aims to also pursue this initial action through a broad network of collaborations and further actions. The ultimate goal of this joint effort between various Schools of Architecture throughout South-East Europe is the development of a wider network of collaborations that will propose new bilateral and multilateral co-operations, projects and exchanges in the immediate future. Dear Friends, dear colleagues from all over South-Eastern Europe, Architecture today is faced with a series of important challenges and structural changes that are appearing at an increasing rate in economy, society, politics and the environment. These changes bring new promises, wealth, economical development, environmental awareness, cultural expressions, intellectual interrelations, and social mobility. Yet, the same changes also entail contradictions, discontinuities, isolations, impoverishment, the intensive use of natural resources, and broad social inequalities. The challenges are numerous and the debate surrounding them is growing. However, capabilities, the tools and, more generally, the role of architecture in this new situation. The biggest question is whether architecture can viably contribute by introducing positive transformations in the metropolitan framework like: the improvement of public space and public services, the inclusion of social groups in the planning and use of public space, the support of multiple uses and the revision of established models of exclusive use of space, the reinforcement of networks and public means of transportation, the improvement of areas plagued by social isolation, the prevention of urban and commercial expansion in favour of natural formations, the preservation of social tolerance and difference together with the promotion of multiculturalism, the defence tive propositions for the representation and the conceptualisation of metropolitan life. Open Discussion ‘Architecture and the city’ is an opportunity for schools of architecture to meet and discuss about common challenges in architectural education. Evidently, each school of architecture forges its own character, built around a different curriculum. In an increasingly globalized world, however, cultural contexts homogenize, social economic and institutional frameworks inevitably merge. Can differences be sustained? Do they present an asset which increases competitiveness or do they pose the danger of marginalization? The discussion was held during the opening day of the exhibition, on Wednesday 18/1/2012, and was structured around three general themes: Architectural Research In a context of increased complexity, architecture as a discipline expands, deepens, becomes more varied, and changes. What is the present content of research in architecture? How is research supported, organised, directed within architectural schools? The exhibition presents fourteen projects by young architects from Germany that have been completed abroad mainly since 2004. The selected examples from construction, interior design, urban design and landscape architecture illustrate the broad range of skills of an explicitly young generation of architects. They show how young architects approach working in new and foreign enones under unusual conditions. These architects come up with sensitive solutions for challenges in architecture today, always with an eye on the future, sustainability, and new technologies. The E.U. 05+ Game is one of the Urban Games designed by the students of the 3rd urban design studio of the Department of Architecture of the University of Cyprus. The games aim to encourage urbanity through urban design practice. They become tools for the active participation of citizens in shaping public consciousness. tion was attempted during the opening of the exhibition, while in the course of the exhibition the games were also tailored to the age characteristics of primary school children. This action was implemented in two phases, at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Arts and also in areas throughout the city of Thessaloniki. The combination of the urban experience and its transfer inside the museum’s spaces acknowledged the role of the museum as a space with connection to our everyday lives.

Flows of capital and information span the globe, operate in real time and are almost cal contexts to shape, in concrete and heterogeneous ways, the multiple conditions of contemporary urban life. Attraction of the roaming global capital and the production of economic value is the driving force of urban transformations, and the rationale of most ‘urban regeneration’ projects. mental conditions is materialised within each city, new forms of labour emerge, unpredictable juxtapositions between people and cultures occur, new relations of power and inequality consolidate. The nexus of processes that shape the framework of urban life often seems relentless and inevitable. Within this variegated and yet relentless framework city people, as individuals, as communities, often as networks invent different ways of survival, practice new forms of representation and communication, explore new acts of exerting ‘the right to the city’. Such fragmented acts, are often non-commercialised, non-consumerist, unmediated, spontaneous, creative. They suggest different ways of producing urban space, of inhabiting the city’s streets and squares, of using the city’s resources. These are not just resistances. They actually exercise, as John Holloway* puts it, a different kind of ‘doing’ and, hence, they form ‘cracks’ in the pervasive capitalist social synthesis. moment in which we assert a different type of doing’. The workshop discusses different collective or individual activities, interventions, behaviours that can be recognized as city cracks and investigates the role of architectural and urban design in revealing and enhancing such fruitful ‘cracks’ in the seemingly inevitable urban condition. The workshop The workshop progresses as a series of design actions distinguished to each other in order to highlight a developing approach to an urban condition. Ranging from the personal to the mutual, from the discrete to the common, the whole process acknowledges designing as an emerging necessity to respond to concerns that are hinted but not yet

Accordingly, the days of the workshop were roughly allocated seven distinct stages of interaction. Day One: Find An Activity The students were asked to look for an urban activity through their direct contact to actual settings and people. This is a crucial step in which designers approach irregular and unstable situations with an open mind and sensitivity to recognize an unconventional but constructive attitude. The positive aspects of the selected attitude are more clearly described. Mutual behaviour plays an important role in identifying social contribution. In contrast to established is approached as a common intention to act upon a given situation. It is a dynamic is composed when a multitude of individualities are recognized to form a collectivity. Day Three: Locate The Crack In The City The ‘crack’ is placed in context. The particular urban conditions that trigger its emergence are explored and located. Comparable activities or conditions are searched within the city. Similar settings do not always arouse the same reaction. It is the particular relation between an urban setting and a common behaviour that evokes a ‘crack’. Day Four: Explore Its Habitat The architectural qualities of the ‘crack’ are approached. Temporal arrangements or more stable settlements are examined and recorded. In most of the cases these are minimal yet they do not simply support a functionality or refer to usability. They may equally have symbolic connotations in reference to the common characteristics of the community. Day Five: Amplify The Potential This is an attempt to increase the potential of the ‘crack’ by improving the structural, organisational and operational features of its setting through the application of knowledge and information. Can a ‘crack’ change the city? Processes that could enhance the transformative effects of an unprompted action are considered. Day Six: Design A new physical articulation is proposed to support the activity. One of the most challenging steps in the whole process. Regulative principles and normative formulations may tive practitioners constantly evaluating their decisions, working in a bottom-up fashion. Day Seven: Present and open-ended nature of the whole undertaking.

Four city cracks Embroidered Wall Space in the city is in a condition of constant change, mainly due to ongoing forces static interactions of people, namely immigrants, and the way they recreate the meaning and shape of the urban setting that they inhabit. Certain parts of their social life are transferred outside the domestic facilities. The group’s project tries to expand the possibilities for a social ‘sculpture’ in progress, next to the ancient city walls, providing open air space for small group habits such as playing chess, making handmade that allows for human communication, physical interaction and social participation, beyond formal and social stereotypes. Urban Infoscopes Networking in the city is the main idea throughout this project and the ways that urban space can act as a canvas, transmitting and receiving messages. People interfere in the city in a dynamic way, arbitrarily and spontaneously posting messages to an often unknown audience. The concept of these messages as material traces of a hypertextual physical system that accommodates the message exchanging network. Urban Para_sites Urban farming is addressed in this project as a potential way to confront the multifaceted crisis in cities. It suggests the closing of the gap in the production chain from the farmer to the consumer, through the exclusion of the intermediate phases of a conventional production line. This allows for the establishment of sustainable logistics in of hosting small, family sized farming initiatives. Taking advantage of rain water and the possibilities of vertical and upside planting, it suggests a smooth, short path from cultivation to consumption. The waiting room is an intermediate space where someone coming from somewhere, is waiting to go somewhere else. It is a space increasingly linked to our daily life, the identity of which hasn’t been studied thoroughly. In a state of awaiting all actions stop. The awaiting subjects are always depended on another person or event. While waiting their behaviour becomes similar. People, who

expands in a monotonous way. We will try to describe the waiting room, by performing a state of awaiting: an almost arithmetic sequence of people, their appearance in space being prioritised in order. We believe that the importance lies in the lack of action, the repetition of movements and the emotional uncertainty deriving from this condition. Lecture

The presentation focuses on improvements in the public space that were introduced over the last ten years in the city of Ljubljana. transport, as well as experiences related to cultural heritage preservation, renewal and revitalisation while tackling the main problems involved in the maintenance of cultural heritage. It also highlights the decline of retail business in the city centre due to the spread of large commercial/retail centres on the outskirts of the town and presents the attempts that have been made in order to attract people to the old part of the city through street performances, concerts, street exhibitions. Major architectural projects such as the new Football Stadium and Multipurpose cluded. Finally the presentation focuses on the Faculty of Architecture of Ljubljana University and the South Africa Ithuba Skills College, an interesting international social project in which the School is involved.
