The power of framing would recommend a visit to next year’s Society of Botanical Artists’ annual exhibition to anyone with an interest in painting. More than 700 exquisitely painted images are included in the show, many of them priced at less than £500. As I walked round marvelling at the detail captured by the artists, along with their technical expertise, I couldn’t help but notice that much of the framing was rather less impressive. These artists clearly have a highly sophisticated sense of colour, tone and hue, yet this didn’t always extend to their choice of frame. One painting in particular crystalised my thoughts. It was a gentle, subtle painting of three figs on a wooden table; a symphony of natural shades, soft colours and shadowy contours. But this charming picture was visually crushed; it was squashed into a small and heavy brown mount and frame. There was no room for the artwork to breathe; the end result was claustrophobic. The frame made the picture appear dated and unsuitable for a modern home. How could an artist with such an acute sense of colour make such a disastrous decision about framing? I suspect that the artist, understandably, didn’t want to spend much on framing and was pleased to re-use an old frame found languishing at the back of the studio. I strongly believe that the frame will have made the difference between the picture selling at the private view (because it is lovely) and not selling at all (it was still available on the last day of the show). Conversely, there were some paintings displayed in wide, deep mounts and well-proportioned, sometimes hand-finished, frames that looked fantastic. Most importantly, buyers would feel confident that these framed pictures would complement a contemporary interior. Of course artists can’t afford to spend too much on each frame, but sometimes a little more investment would achieve substantial results. Many artists are capable of hand-finishing their own frames, so it may be more a matter of planning and imagination than financial investment. We all have to work harder than ever at marketing in an age where people are bombarded with visual images; if a picture looks wrong, potential buyers won’t stand there wondering why, they will move swiftly on.

Two shows in Russia this September RUSSIAN PICTURE framers will enjoy an embarrassment of riches with two trade events scheduled for Moscow during September. However, as the two shows are so close together, many international exhibitors will not be able to support both and would prefer it if one strong show had been organised instead. First on the calendar is the Art and Frame Expo Forum, to be held from 13 to 15 September. International speakers include Steve McKee GCF Adv, Stephen Finney GCF, Rob Markov CPF and Martin Harrold, along with many local industry figures. There will be a total of 24 masterclasses and business seminars and around 60 exhibitors will be taking part. This show is run by Artindustry, owners of the Russian

Framing School, who last year ran the rival Baguette Forum fair in St Petersberg. Following closely is the Moscow International Framing Forum, from 26 to 28 September. International speakers confirmed so far are Brian Wolf GCF CPF, Jim Miller, Mal Reynolds GCF Adv, Lyn Hall GCF Adv and John Ranes GCF CPF, who has two new masterclasses planned for this event. There will be a wide range of classes from Russian tutors as well as a conference and framing competition. This event runs alongside an established craft show. MIFF, which was held in Moscow last year as well, is organised by NeoArt, a Russian framing distributor. www.artframeexpo.ru www.bagetforum.ru

ARTIST’S SKETCH ‘I am guided by what customers say they would like to see in my next collection’

Sarah Bayliss

hen working as an interior designer I used to paint canvases to incorporate into the rooms I designed. I often struggled; it was hard to decide what would look right. A painting can enhance a scheme or ruin it and often represents a considerable investment. My work was wide-ranging - from children’s murals with cartoon characters and dinosaurs to trompe l’oeil frescos with vines creeping around stone walls, pillars and columns. Other commissions included pub signs, blackboard menus and logos. I never expected to be specialising in animal artwork, despite my love of nature and animals. I aim to portray animals with character and personality - I concentrate on this as much as their physical attributes. I want them to be real and full of life, so that when my customers take their artwork home and hang it on the wall they become attached to the character and soul of the animal I have depicted. My paintings make people smile; they are happy pictures, painted with passion by an artist who is herself in a happy place. Since I started painting animals there has been no shortage of ideas, only a shortage of time in which to paint them all. My brain is a Noah’s Ark. I am guided by what customers say they would like to see in my next collection. I recently added

W

Tristan, a Hereford bull, as I was often asked for non-dairy cattle. He was named after a delightful eight-year-old boy whom I met at an agricultural show and who lent me a copy of a Hereford breeding magazine. Tristan frequently sells out at the shows we attend. I don't want to paint just farmyard animals - I want to include owls, garden birds, even insects in my collection. Every animal, no matter how small and insignificant, has character and personality. Once on an 80x100cm canvas that character and personality demand attention. I have painted two very cute robins which have stolen many hearts and this Christmas I will be turning my hand to penguins. I was asked for giraffes, so now my portfolio includes a wonderful giraffe picture named, perhaps a little vainly, after me and my partner Steve. Again, this has proved to be a good choice of subject. My son’s idea of painting myself as a warthog was simply out of the question! The British public really do love animals; a high percentage of homes have a pet dog, cat or rabbit and I believe that many families would welcome an elephant, giraffe or fully grown cow if it was feasible. My painting style lends itself to anthropomorphism. Many customers admit to talking to their animal paintings; I have even received emails and texts ‘from’ my characters to let me know that they have settled into their new home and are happy and looking good. ● www.sarahbaylissfineart.co.uk

Bloodstock announces first art exhibition in 2014 ROCK AND metal festival Bloodstock will include an art exhibition for the first time in 2014, named The Rock and Metal Gallery. The concept came from Bloodstock co-founder Paul Raymond Gregory, who is also an acclaimed artist with an extensive body of work which includes many album covers and monolithic pieces inspired by the writings of JRR Tolkien. The gallery will include festival artwork going back to the first event in 2001. Paul’s latest Tolkien work, The Silmarillion, will be on show in a handcarved frame by master-framer John Davis, which was designed by Paul himself. There will also be a display of 10 August 2013

BC Rich guitars. The gallery will be housed in a specially constructed space of around 1300 square feet and all artwork will be professionally lit and hung. This exhibition will mark the first step on the road to establishing a permanent rock venue under the Bloodstock banner. The proposed venue would include a live music space with bar, rehearsal and recording facilities, and a permanent exhibition space. US patent for Valiani

VALIANI, THE Italian manufacturer of computerised mountcutters, has been awarded a US patent for their interchangeable cutting head system. The system has already been granted a European patent and won the Art & Framing Industry’s Innovation Award in 2008. The cutting head system, which has been sold in 65 countries, enables users to cut, emboss and draw. Outstanding Italian engineering provides incredible accuracy and the colour-coded heads

can be changed rapidly. In addition to the MatStylus Deluxe pen head and the packaging tools there are six cutting heads and an embossing head. All nine heads are available across the range of Valiani CMCs, from the Geminus to the newly released Ultra and Ultra Vacuum. www.valiani.com

Offering artists a helping hand DEGREE ART, founded ten years ago by art graduates Isobel Beauchamp and Elinor Olisa (pictured right), now showcases work from 300 artists and has a gallery on trendy Vyner Street, east London. The business helps aspiring art graduates to break into the industry and profit from their work. The founders saw their fellow graduates leave university with fantastic art and no means of selling it, so they created their online gallery to promote and distribute this work. ‘Every year 12,000 graduates enter the art industry, which can be intimidating for them and many have no idea about business. Degree Art punctures the hierarchy and offers every artist a place to promote, sell and prosper,’ says Isobel Beauchamp. www.degreeart.com ART BUSINESS TODAY

FESPA 2013, the world’s largest event for the wide format print industry, was held at ExCel London this summer. 650 exhibitors showed the latest equipment and consumables for digital printing, screen printing and garment decoration at this busy five-day show. Guild members Fotospeed, Keencut, LION Picture Framing Supplies, Permajet and Valiani all ventured into new markets at the FESPA 2013 event. FESPA (the Federation of European Screen Printing Associations) runs this event aimed at bringing together diverse business sectors with a common interest in print and visual communication. The show takes place in a different country each year. FESPA Digital will be held in Germany from 20 to 23 May 2014. SHOP TALK ‘You will make savings and generate more cash for your business’

Jan Baker

find it hard to find the time to do the accounts, and next to no inclination to get down to it. I now employ Sue to do the books which means that my evenings are free from the torture of book-keeping. However, employing a book-keeper does take you a step away from the detail of the business, and precise knowledge of what you are spending. It’s too easy to think, ‘I will have a look at that tomorrow … or next week …’ And you end up not getting round to it. The biggest hazard for a small business is poor cashflow, and in most instances this is down to the eye being taken off the ball - with catastrophic results. I make certain that Sue (known as the financial director; we like to encourage her) and I sit down together once a week. In less than an hour, including all our chitchat, we dissect the accounts completely. It’s surprising how often something comes to light that can save money. I let her know what is coming up: maybe there is stock to be purchased or a computer that needs replacing, so between us we can monitor cashflow accurately. Sue has a wealth of knowledge which we can benefit from, so we don’t have to learn the hard way. Make a point of looking at profit margins on items you are selling and assess whether the valuable space you have given them is earning its keep and providing value for money. On certain items we have decided to accept

lower profit margins, such as our handmade kaleidoscopes, as they attract new people into the gallery and give the opportunity to start conversations that can lead to more profitable sales. The point is, we have taken control and made a calculated decision. Look at your staffing and decide if you really do need all their hours, or could someone work part time? This is hard when the people you work with become friends, but work does expand to fit the time available. They won’t thank you if the company goes bust and they have no work at all. This year we crossed a boundary and decided it would be more cost effective to become a limited company. We made this important decision by being informed and proactive, rather than by trying to react when it might be too late. We all store an enormous amount of information that we simply do not make the best use of, so we may not be making the most of the money we earn. Tills provide a huge amount of data which can provide insight into what’s selling, and help us manage our cash and, in turn, our profit. We should be analysing this data, not just stapling the print-outs to the daily sheets. It may be boring, hard to understand, or not what we want to do late in the day, but you’ve got to do it. Read your accounts, then think, ‘Does this look right? Can I save money on one thing this week?’ If you do this regularly you will make savings and generate more cash for your business. ● www.theframe-gallery.co.uk

LifeSaver and GCF: working together

LIFESAVER PICTURE framing software is subsidising customers who take the Guild Commended Framer exam. The promotion will be retrospectively applied to anyone who has qualified over the 19 years since the qualification was launched and customers can claim up to £118. LifeSaver software has been available in the USA since 1994, but the company’s UK arm is new this year. Director Eric Crowe has relocated here and a UK website has been launched. The site features 30-day free trial downloads, ‘how to’ training videos and in-depth product descriptions.

Eric Crowe explains why his company is supporting GCF, ‘We believe that framers who are committed to their trade and business want to take opportunities to both confirm and demonstrate their proficiency through programs like GCF certification. It is this commitment that we also find in our LifeSaver customers as they want to take steps to improve their business and ensure that they are both profitable and efficient. Because of this natural match we have begun this promotion to reward those who have already taken the GCF and incentivise those who are thinking about doing so. The ultimate goal of the promotion is to do what we can as a leader in this industry to help framers improve and grow their businesses.’ ‘We are very pleased that LifeSaver Software has recognised the importance of the GCF exam to the framing industry,’ says Guild CEO Louise Hay. ‘By encouraging framers to take the exam they are helping raise standards and giving their customers the tools they need to thrive. We applaud companies who are prepared to ‘give something back’ to their industry. We are all stronger if we work together.’ www.lifesaversoft.co.uk/gcf2013 Top: LifeSaver’s Eric Crowe at the recent Guild Artists’ Exhibition Below: Steve McKee GCF Adv examining a candidate’s picture during a GCF exam at D&J Simons

IN BUSINESS ‘Events are rising and falling from grace in ever shortening time scales’

Louise Hay

he Guild has held many strategic discussions at board level and within the industry, as to the value of trade fairs to both exhibitors and visitors. There seems to be lots going on right now with events rising and falling from grace in ever shortening time scales. All exhibitors want from a trade fair is a smooth in-and-out, an attractive environment and plenty of relevant visitors to talk to. To increase the value of their event to exhibitors, show organisers must work harder to get bums on seats, and to do this they need to provide more added value benefits for visitors: education, refreshments, vouchers, free parking and so on. We often hear, or read online, ‘It’s not worth going to xxx show – it’s just the same old . . .’ Those of us who regularly attend a lot of exhibitions around the world know that this is not true, but it’s the job of show organisers, working with exhibitors, to convince their industry that their show is worth attending and that visitors will find the elusive new products they crave. Many companies think that if they have a professional team of reps, already doing a really good job, then they have saturated their potential market. They have a point, but it’s just not the same - at a show, exhibitors really get the chance to present themselves in the best light, make a feature of their new products and show customers new ways to display and use old favourites. News snippets throughout this

issue reveal that the proposed new German fair was cancelled before it was even launched and the Italian organiser Publifiere srl has reputedly folded, so no FrameArt Expo in 2014, though I am in touch with Mauro Fioravanti regarding FAMA’s plans for an alternative Italian show. Focus on Imaging has closed, though a new photo show has quickly risen to fill its spot in the industry calendar. The Photography Show will launch 1 to 4 March and is supported by the Royal Photographic Society On the bright side, US trade fair WCAF, now branded as West Coast Art & Frame Expo, is one of the few events that continues to grow its offering and visitor numbers; the co-location with its own National Conference and the PMA annual get together has contributed to its success. As we go to press I am working with Spring Fair International organisers i2i Events Group and a selection of exhibitors to refresh the offering for art and framing at Spring Fair 2014. There will be much more to follow on this, so look out for trade fair news from the Guild. For visitors, I find it’s the accidental discoveries that make a show worth attending – the artwork you’d never consider online or in a catalogue; the moulding that is just the job; the mounting technique you’d never think of alone or the demonstrations that instil confidence to try a new technique.● Louise Hay is the Chief Executive of the Fine Art Trade Guild

IN PRINT ‘I have had seven inkjet printers and four RIP systems over the last 12 years’

Mick Hodson

efore digital inkjet printers, fine art prints were produced by offset lithography. This was the technique used to create most ‘ink on paper’ work. Etching, screenprinting and other techniques existed, but these are specialist and expensive, so they remained the preserve of artistprintmakers. You didn’t print one-offs back then, you printed an edition, so you were in for bills of hundreds or thousands of pounds, payable up front. The down side was that you had hundreds of prints to sell, and store, and editions were typically larger than they are now. The up side was that the unit cost was low. The art market embraced inkjet printing. But as a traditional, old school business, the idea of inkjet replacing the whole long winded process of films, plates and big machines in factories was a tall order. However, we gradully came to accept that giclée prints can meet our quality standards. This opened up a new market for one offs and enabled the man in the street to publish artwork. The inks became lightfast, the papers became acid free, and we were off. I got into giclée printing by accident. I was happily designing books and other ‘ink on paper’ items, when a client for whom I was producing a book about Newmarket races, saw me proofing pages using my large format inkjet printer. He said that his wife had a gallery, and asked if I could print some limited editions for her. Of course I

B

agreed, believing that my state-of-the-art Epson 9000 would be ideal. Then I found out that fine art work is very different from proofing. You need special ink and paper. I dabbled with replacing my inks with lightfast substitutes, but discovered that this would void my support contract, and that it would mess up my machine. So I decided to invest in a specialist giclée set-up. I have so far had seven inkjet printers and four RIP systems over the 12 years I have been offering a digital printing service. To achieve consistency, I had to convert and adjust image files from and to all different colour settings, CMYK and RGB. A nightmare. Now the process has become more simple, as I work wherever possible with RGB. Giclée technology has moved on amazingly and it is hard to see what other improvements can be made. All clients want to feel that you are giving them the best result possible. Publishers want reliablity, consistancy and a good price. Self-publishing artists need a bit more hand-holding and educating about how the system works, particularly where file preparation and the choice of materials are concerned; you have to work to develop their confidence in your abilities. The hobby amateur artist will let you get on with it, without getting too bogged down in technology. They all want to be sure their prints will last and won’t fade in a few months. ● www.mickhodson.co.uk www.gicleelondon.co.uk

New Framiac software available SINCE ITS UK release at the 2012 Spring Fair, Framiac FramR software has been adopted by framers across the UK and Ireland. Steve Brant from Your Picture Framer in Worcester, who is in his fourth year of business, doesn’t know how he survived without it. ‘FramR has streamlined the admin side of my business, saving me an incredible amount of time and worry.’ ‘I was using another pricing system and surviving, but FramR allows me more time to focus on the needs of my customers. Total confidence in my pricing is a big relief and makes it easy to deliver the price to the customer. It’s not until you know the cost of running your business that you can really appreciate what it costs to make a frame, and FramR really helps with this. I discovered that I needed to increase my prices to be truly profitable, which I admit I did with some trepidation. I was concerned how my customers would ART BUSINESS TODAY

react, but I found very little resistance to the price increase and I now have more money in my pocket.’ ‘The flexibility of the software is great; I can include or exclude any aspect of making a frame and ensure that my price covers everything, even those little costs that don’t look like much but do add up. The flexibility of the software also makes it very easy to upsell. There’s no doubt that FramR has made my business more professional. I even show off the software to customers as I’m pricing and they’re generally very impressed.’ ‘Framiac has just released version 9.06 of FramR with a number of new features,’ says director Mark Wilson. ‘And we’re already working on 9.07 which, among other things, will make ordering stock even easier. As always, all updates are free to install from our website.’ www.framiac.com

Focus on Imaging closes after 24 years FOCUS ON Imaging, the photography and imaging show held each March at the Birmingham NEC, has been cancelled after 24 years. This year the show occupied two halls and over 200 exhibitors took part. The decision to close the show by its owner Mary Walker Exhibitions may have been prompted by the absence of exhibitors including Sony, Samsung and Panasonic in recent years. On the show website Mary Walker says, ‘Focus on Imaging will not be sold – I’m simply bringing it to an end.’ Focus was the UK’s largest photographic trade show, but was less significant globally than Photokina, which takes place in Germany during alternate years. Many framing suppliers exhibited at the show and did very well there, including Arqadia, LION Picture Framing Supplies, Gunnar, Hot Press, Framers Corner, DIY Framing and D&J Simons. Making Pictures Bristol round-up

FRAMERS, ARTISTS and gallery owners met at The Island Gallery, Bristol, for an evening of networking, demonstrations and learning, organised by The Fine Art Trade Guild. The event, which was made possible by the generous support of Epson and their reseller Tetenal, was the second Making Pictures event of the year. This year’s Best-selling Published Artist, Laura Wall, presented live painting demonstrations and talked about earning her living as an artist. Tetenal’s Phil Barker offered advice on self-publishing and the ins and outs of fine art printing, while demonstrating the latest Epson equipment. Guests brought memory sticks along on the night and Phil printed their images out on the spot. Framing business guru Martin Tracy GCF talked about marketing your business. Known for his creative PR stunts, Martin explained how to achieve top results from low-cost promotional activity. Framiac’s Gilly and Mark Wilson helped framers understand profitability through pricing, while Steve Goodall and Paula McConkey represented Wessex Pictures.

Artist Victoria Clothier found the evening useful, ‘I was fascinated to watch Laura Wall painting and she gave me lots of encouragement and practical advice. She said that you have to have the confidence to really sell your work and approach galleries, and we discussed how to do this. Martin Tracy gave me tips and support on how to build up the business too. I know that you’ve got to keep pushing when you are starting out, and talking to kind generous people who understand what you are going through makes it that bit easier. Networking is so valuable.’ Jo and Alec Palmer, The Framing Lot, travelled from south Devon for the event. ‘We mainly wanted to talk to other framers, which is always useful, but we wanted to talk to the guys from Framiac as well, as we are looking to invest in pricing software. It was worth the effort; we talked to various people about pricing software and we discussed business, profitability and the most effective marketing methods. We ended up sharing ideas with gallery owners who are based ten miles away from us, but even though they are local we never normally get the chance to chat.’ www.fineart.co.uk ART BUSINESS TODAY

Upbeat news from AC Art & Framing

TRADE PICTURE supplier AC Art & Framing has joined forces with artist Darren Baker to produce a print of his portrait of Kenny Dalglish. The print is being sold to raise funds to support the Marina Dalglish charity and has been launched exclusively via Liverpool FC. ‘We are honoured to have been chosen to not only publish this wonderful limited edition print but also to be given the responsibility of framing and despatching the images,’ says AC Art & Framing MD Mike Baggs. ‘Darren’s portrait is simply sensational and hopefully the prints will raise lots of money for an excellent cause.’ This spring saw new artist Amanda Stratford’s first limited edition print collection unveiled. ‘Amanda has built an impressive following for her work over the years, but couldn’t cope with demand for her prints so a customer of ours suggested she speak to me. The

rest, as they say, is history,’ explains Mike Baggs. ‘Amanda’s originals are produced in felt, and the reproductions are absolutely brilliant, really capturing the depth and movement that felt provides. The work has quickly rocketed up our best sellers list.’ The first collection of prints from new artist Danny Abrahams has been well received. ‘Danny’s originals have been selling well for over two years but he had never taken the step into publishing. Not only has Danny agreed to give us exclusive rights to publish his work, but he has entrusted us with sales of his original pieces. From mid-July onwards galleries around the UK can obtain Danny’s brilliant originals from us. They are well priced and they really do sell. One gallery sold over 30 at a recent exhibition,’ enthuses Mike Baggs. (See one of Danny’s prints on page 30.) www.acartandframing.co.uk

Tretchikoff has been in the news recently, following the sale of his famous Chinese Girl for nearly £1million. The artist’s exotic studies of Asian and African women, along with his enigmatic studies of oriental flowers, were top of the best-selling print lists for many years during the 1960s and 70s. Prints of his work sold by the thousand through Boots. FACE TO FACE

A magical journey KERRY DARLINGTON’s highly imaginative, vibrantly coloured artwork has been a hit with galleries for the last seven years. In 2012 she won the Art & Framing Industry’s coveted Best-selling Published Artist Award and she and her husband have just launched their own publishing company

Did you go to art school? I have a degree in illustration. After graduating I was employed to design huge illustrative murals for walls and the bases of swimming pools. They were painted by hand then installed into palaces and hotels across Saudi Arabia and the UAE. How did you start selling your art? I left my job when I had my third child and began to sell paintings on eBay. I noticed a trend on programmes such as Changing Rooms for large decorative canvases, so I experimented with this type of work. Up to that point I had always worked on paper creating smallscale illustrations. I began to do so well that my husband Cristhian gave up his job so that we could grow the business. A gallery owner saw my work on eBay and started selling my paintings. He suggested that I exhibit at Spring Fair International. I approached a gallery in Chester who started to sell my work too, so I was able to give up eBay. At our first Spring Fair in 2006, we sold everything and received a lot of commissions. We did business with around 15 galleries. We did the show again the following year, which is where I met my first agent. That agreement was for originals only, so two years later I approached a publisher with an idea for 3D prints. How is your business structured? We publish in-house and sell to independent galleries. Cristhian manages framing and the general running of the operation, with the help of a wonderful PA and a sales team. ART BUSINESS TODAY

I employ artists to help assemble my 3D Unique Editions, which frees up my time to work on new ideas. These editions are prints with hand-crafted 3D embellishments, then resin is applied by hand, so the artwork is unique and indistinguishable from an original. We ventured into publishing to launch my Unique Editions. It was always our intention to self-publish eventually, because we wanted control over my work and our finances. The idea for the product was ready, but distribution was an obvious problem. As we had previously used agents, we did not even know which galleries were selling my work. We eventually decided that we were not ready to self-publish, so we opted to sell to a publishing company for a couple of years instead. I am regularly approached by licensees and greeting card companies, but I haven’t had time to explore this area yet, though it is something I will think about in the future. How do you market your business? I use Facebook and Twitter to speak to customers and introduce new images, then my galleries share this information with their buyers via Facebook. We use e-newsletters to provide galleries with more detailed information about new images for their websites and marketing. We distribute artwork via courier, so we can get orders out really quickly. We have just introduced regional sales representatives to our galleries, dividing the UK into three sections, so each rep can provide their designated galleries with personal attention. We will be exhibiting at Spring Fair

International in 2014, where we will launch new images. We also look forward to meeting gallery owners faceto-face and hearing their feedback on our products and service. Any advice for artists starting out? Artists really have three options: find a distributor for your originals; join a publishing company; or build up a business on your own. It depends what work you are willing or able to do. If you find a distributor for originals, you have to be able to produce a lot of work quickly. Publishing is good if your work takes a long time to produce, but the publishing company will take the biggest cut, as they finance marketing and distributing. Or you can start independently, like I did, with one or two galleries helping to build your reputation, combined with investment in trade shows. It will take longer to develop a reputation on your own, but you retain control. All paths have pros and cons. What are your plans? I will continue to work on more figurative pieces and eventually hold a major exhibition. Ophelia (see page 28) was my first figurative release and the public response has been fantastic. We would like to develop a manageable network of galleries across the UK; we will develop my brand to our mutual advantage and work together for many years. We have only been independent for six months, so we are still learning, but we are loving it. ● www.kerrydarlington.co.uk See Kerry’s work on page 28 August 2013 27

Valiani

Alex Borissov

Strapped for Space? Valiani’s new mountboard storage base provides a simple solution to a big problem. The base is optional and provides the facility to store part or full sheets of mountboard, on easily accessible enclosed shelves. Sizes up to and including 32x48” (820x1220mm). The storage base is available for the new Ultra and Ultra-V. The cost at CMC order is 980 euros (approx £840). The cost of adding the base to the ‘old’ MatPro CMC iX and ixV is 1550 euros (approx £1330).

Instead of brushes, Alex Borissov uses ravioli to create stunning abstract expressionist artworks. ‘Pasta happens to be the ideal tool with which to launch paint onto canvas with a catapult. It has weight but is soft enough to create delicious splashes of line and colour,’ explains the artist.

LifeSaver Software

Eli-Chem Resins

FrameVue is new digital preview software from the makers of LifeSaver Software for picture framers. The company was founded in the USA in 1994 and co-founder Eric Crowe has just relocated to the UK in order to promote the company’s products in Europe. FrameVue, which integrates with LifeSaver Software, creates a library of mounts and mouldings, eliminating the need to recapture. Mountboard can be re-positioned without re-shooting and multi-opening mount designs can be displayed. Users can create bespoke slide show presentations and email designs to customers.

Eli-Chem Resins has launched a revolutionary step forward in pigments for artwork. Eli-Glow is the latest pioneering technology in creating stunning effects that come alive in the dark. These amazing pigments are available in a fine crystal form for easy mixing into Clear Artwork Resins. They can be added to the resin or sprinkled over the surface and sealed in place with a brush. By day the crystals absorb UV light and after dark they release energy in a long-lasting glow. This enables the artist to achieve two very different effects as the light changes. Unlike conventional pigments, Eli-Glow is not a primary light reflector, but is an actual source of light. The available colours are green and aquamarine blue, with more to follow soon. Eli-Glow pigments release light for up to ten hours in darkness and ‘charge up’ in minutes.

Anne Corless

A series of ten new bird prints will be showcased at the Bird Fair at Rutland Water this August. Also new are humorous illustrations for the RSPB calendar, ‘A Year with Nature’.

The inspiration for A Gentle Touch comes from spending time watching, sketching and photographing wildlife in Kenya many years ago. As with all Anne Corless’ artwork, the reference is her own and she is delighted that this captured moment is now available as limited edition giclée prints produced by Towngate Publications. Part of the proceeds of sales of this print will be donated to a wildlife charity. The artist is thrilled that this mixed media painting has been accepted into the Artists for Conservation 2013 festival in Vancouver.

ART

Sold! Artists often shy away from selling their work, as rejection can be painfully personal, but their presence can really help galleries sell their artwork. Artist and gallery owner KAREN WALLIS COLEMAN urges artists to play a role in the sales process

ART ➺

CASE STUDY: the gallery owner Jonathan Dodd, Waterhouse & Dodd, www.waterhousedodd.com ‘When potential buyers meet artists it gives them an entrée into the creative process; the work of art seems more authentic if you have heard a first-hand description of it from the artist. Artists choose to paint or sculpt, they don’t choose to negotiate or talk for a living, so art dealers may be able to discuss the artwork more effectively on some levels; a combination of artist and dealer working together is the best way to make sales. Young artists may be understandably proud of their exhibition, so invite large numbers of friends and family to the private view, which occupies space and takes the artist’s attention away from talking to clients. The dealer has to be diplomatic but firm and ensure that the artist circulates with the right people. Similarly, artists can get caught in conversations that the dealer knows

Artist and dealer working together is the best way to make sales. I’ve never know an artist whose presence at the private view didn’t have a postitive impact on sales won’t lead to a sale, in which case it’s necessary to move the artist on. I’ve never known an artist whose presence at the private view did not have a positive impact on sales. I wouldn’t have an artist demonstrating at the event, as this would focus attention away from the art on the walls. Artists may place undue weight on making sales at the private view and be very downcast if none are achieved, so the dealer has to explain that sales on the first night are not always an indicator of the success of the show.’

CASE STUDY: the artist Pip McGarry, www.pipmcgarry.com ‘It’s essential for the artist to attend private views. The more involvement you have with the selling process the easier it is to build up a following. Pictures are very personal, they are an unnecessary luxury, and customers are buying into the artist as much as the picture. They are less likely to buy the picture if they can’t relate to you. With wildlife art there’s lots to talk about; you very often share interests and travel destinations with customers. The story behind the image is vital. I helped sell a picture on Friday when I explained that I’d watched the cheetah in my painting catch a gazelle; I discussed the speed and

elegance of the movement. I helped sell an elephant painting by explaining that the elephant had waded within two metres of our boat and had splashed us with irritation; we talked about the river and the location for some time. I am often asked to sign private view invitations and write messages on the backs of prints. If I have brought greeting cards to the show I offer to write a personal message in the card. I love meeting customers. There’s a lot of hard work in creating paintings, getting them framed and varnished, hanging them and meeting deadlines. Being at the private view and chatting with customers is one of the best bits of my working life.’

❞ Sales people can’t be everywhere at once, so artists provide a practical solution too. We don’t expect them to discuss money and make sales though; they engage, we sell

50 August 2013

CASE STUDY: the artist Helen Elliott, www.helenelliott.net ‘I think it’s essential for the artist to attend private views. I’m quite shy, so I get very nervous, but you’ve got to get past that. There’s normally a glass of wine to hand, which helps, but limit yourself to one. Attending private views is less intimidating if you have a good rapport with the gallery owner and staff. It’s not about making direct sales. My role is to talk to potential buyers and show them the human being behind the art. They often want to know the background to the piece, or find out how I developed my style or sense of colour. Once

someone has engaged with the person and the product they are much more likely to buy. Some people want to know about the details in a painting. For example I often include jack russells in my pictures, so that leads to a discussion about dogs, and I ask the customer whether they have a dog, and so on. Meeting the artist gives people something to say about the picture when they get it home; they can point out some of the details we discussed. Once I get talking to people, attending private views isn’t so bad. The feedback is always positive, since people are there because they want to be.’

CASE STUDY: the gallery owner Liz Honey, Saffron Art Gallery, www.saffrongallery.co.uk ‘We don’t encourage artists to attend private views before group shows; it’s too complicated and we prefer to use the space to entertain clients. But it can definitely be useful to have the artist present at solo or two-person shows. Collectors enjoy meeting the artist, especially those who have bought several pieces from one artist. Customers want to ask about inspiration, methods, materials – it depends on their interests. Often they want to find out the story

behind particular pieces. Some artists were born to help with sales and are very comfortable talking about themselves and their work. That’s very useful for us. Others dread public appearances, in which case we don’t put pressure on them to attend. Our sales people can’t be everywhere at once, so having someone else available who is knowledgeable about the work is a practical solution to a problem as well. We don’t expect artists to discuss money and actually make sales; they engage, we sell.’
