Customer service is king? ustomer service is king’ is a message that practically every contributor to this magazine is at pains to emphasise. I was wondering whether including another feature or column making this point would be superfluous, as surely everyone must have got the message by now? I decided that a bit of undercover research was called for, so, dressed in my dog-walking anorak and old Converses I visited a few west London frameshops and galleries. I stood in the first shop (not a Guild member) for several minutes before anyone appeared. Eventually a harassed-looking assistant suggested that I frame my 12x16” studio photograph in a thin black moulding with a single off-white mount. No interesting design options were offered, let alone invisible glass or conservation framing. And this was in Chiswick, where houses readily cost a million pounds. The photograph featured my two dogs; if the framer had commented warmly on their cuteness I would have found it a little bit harder to walk away. Not everyone has got the message, it seems. The next shop I visited had a Sex Pistols poster in an elaborate swept frame in the window, an extrovert touch which I took as a good sign. The framer was much more upbeat and talked to me about why certain mouldings and a triple mount would flatter the image. The conversation turned to dogs, and mutual trust was established. I was so pleased with our conversation that I returned the next day with a highly stylised 1950’s poster by modernist painter John Tunnard. The framer instantly understood that it needed a retro slightly distressed angular moulding, which would emulate framing styles of the time. Mine is a cheap reproduction poster, but the framer was carried away by the style of the image and didn’t fall into the trap of offering a commensurately cheap frame. He knew that the framed poster would have tremendous visual impact and this enthusiasm convinced me to go with his suggestions. I am happy to report that he was right. So it seems that not everyone has got the ‘customer is king’ message, but, based on my pilot study, those who have are flying high.

2014 framing competition announced

Like father, like son KEN REED, the father of watercolour artist Alan Reed, is best known for his golfing art, having designed posters for the British Open and USA Open Championships. In 1975 he created this Morgan poster, which is now available as a signed edition and has a retail price of £40. Originally the image was sold by the Morgan Motor Co and selected dealers. www.alanreed.com

Enjoying the limelight STEVEN HARRISON-Lord, owner of Harrison Lord Gallery in Yorkshire, recently appeared on ITV’s Storage Hoarders programme. Steven offered advice to a couple with 109 paintings by Jack Cudworth, informing them that the artist’s work fetches between a few hundred pounds and £2000 at auction. Steven gave tips on how to find artwork by ‘the next David Hockney’, pointing out that work by Peter Brook which sold for £400 ten years ago now fetches £5000. Peter Cleevely GCF, joint winner of this year’s Guild Challenge Framing Award

NEXT YEAR’S art and framing industry awards for technical framing skills will be on the theme ‘A Day Out in London’. Framers from across the UK and beyond rise to this annual challenge that allows them to showcase their ingenuity and imagination. Places on the shortlist are fiercely contested due to the kudos this brings the framers’ businesses and the many publicity opportunities it presents. Those entering the Mount Design Award, sponsored by Wizard and

Framers Corner, will frame a postcard featuring Horace Taylor’s iconic 1924 poster for London Transport, entitled Brightest London is Reached by Underground. The rules for the Guild Challenge Framing Award, sponsored by Valiani, invite entrants to frame any items of memorabilia of their choosing, including three-dimensional objects, though size restrictions apply. A panel of judges will assess entries according to the technical skills and creativity displayed. The shortlisted frames will be displayed at the Art & Framing Industry Awards Dinner on Saturday 17 May, when the overall winners will be revealed. Entry criteria are available at www.fineart.co.uk

Gain access to a ‘digital stockroom’ THE ART Retail Network is offering Fine Art Trade Guild members premium membership free of charge for six months. The usual cost is £35 per month, so members save £240. The Art Retail Network is an international co-operative gallery network, enabling artists and galleries to share a communal ‘digital stockroom’. By joining the network, you gain access to stock provided by hundreds of international galleries and artists, and you benefit from others selling your artwork for you. Picture framers are encouraged to join, as well as artists and galleries, as the network enables them to show a wide range of artwork on-screen in their shops, without the need to invest in stock.

Members are provided with gallery management software and there is no commission on sales. Getting started is quick and easy; a ‘multiple stock upload function’ allows you to upload ten pieces of artwork at once. Guild members are also being offered ‘fellowship’ of the network. Fellowship entitles you to vote on improvements and developments to the network’s services. Fellowship, which is not yet publicly available, entails a oneoff payment of £600, which entitles users to lifetime membership and use of all services. ‘This offers is good value when you consider that our annual membership fee is £420,’ says CEO Jamie McCallum. www.artretailnetwork.com ART BUSINESS TODAY

Making Pictures Bedford and Dublin: a successful formula JUDGING BY the high attendance levels at the Fine Art Trade Guild’s two most recent Making Pictures events, intimate informal get-togethers focused on learning and networking are what the trade wants. The idea is that framers, artists and gallery owners don’t have to travel far to meet a range of suppliers and trainers, and ticket prices are kept minimal. Guests can then gather advice and information while enjoying refreshments, and benefit from conversations with others facing the same challenges and opportunities. Framing supplier Arqadia hosted Making Pictures Bedford and generously provided the first 50 people to register with a free copy of Annabelle Ruston’s book on Conservation Framing. Guests heard an inspiring talk on business promotion from PR expert Eve Parkin of Hasliman Taylor, and Framiac’s Mark Wilson explained how to increase profits. Framers’ Equipment’s Peter Stanlick provided workshop tips while Jan Stanlick demonstrated how to join float frames. Emma Murphy of Conservation by Design captivated the audience with her discussion on photographic storage. Arqadia’s marketing manager Pauline Hutchinson comments, ‘The Making Pictures event was a roaring success. We were delighted to welcome not only a number of familiar faces to our showrooms, but also many people who we hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting before. We can’t thank all our wonderful experts and exhibitors enough for braving the heat wave conditions and providing us with

interesting demonstrations and talks throughout the night. We’re sure everyone went away feeling they had not only learnt something, but been introduced to some fantastic people too.’ Making Pictures Dublin, which was sponsored by LION Picture Framing Supplies, was held at The Copper House Gallery, thanks to the hospitality of Leszek Wolnik. ‘The evening was a complete success,’ reports Master of the Guild Steve McKee GCF Adv. ‘Many people commented that they thoroughly enjoyed the night. Les was an excellent host and everyone was very impressed with the gallery and printing facilities. They all enjoyed LION's demo on cutting and joining frames, and Mark Paisley’s lecture about fine art printing was packed. I did demos on conservation mounting and hinging for individuals over the course of the event. Eric Crowe of LifeSaver Software seemed pretty busy by the end of the evening.’ ‘When guests arrived they enjoyed a drink while taking a sneak preview of the gallery’s forthcoming exhibition of work by artists from County Kerry,’ says the Guild’s Kasia Szkolnicka. ‘There was a wide cross-section of visitors, from all aspects of the trade. I heard a lot of chat about how business is going, with people sharing ideas and tips. Experts such as Steve McKee were providing indepth answers to questions about profitability, promotion and diversification.’ www.fineart.co.uk

ARTIST’S SKETCH ‘I want the images to stay on my merchandise, no matter how many wash cycles they endure’

Sarah Bayliss

art of an artist’s soul goes into a painting. That energy should be reflected in prints too. Colours are used for a reason and the same shades and hues should appear in print; the edition should be consistent and as close to the original as possible, reflecting its vibrancy and energy. I have little time to spare; I need to deliver originals to my printer knowing that he will create prints that are a true reflection of my work, which can go on sale immediately. Luckily, a long-established artist recommended Towngate Publications, which saved me a lot of time searching for a printer I could trust. My customers know that there will only ever be a certain number of each print. Many high street shops sell massproduced artwork but I believe that limited edition giclées show that I care about the quality of my products and about my customers. The majority of my prints are sold framed in solid oak, an option my customers appreciate. My frames have received many compliments, reinforcing my decision to go for a high quality, solid wood finish which can be stained or painted to the customer’s requirements. Frames are important; they must enhance artwork, not detract from it. I have seen pictures that really didn't appeal to me at all but, once placed in the right frame, they become a glorious masterpiece, worthy of any wall.

P

I demand the best quality throughout my product range - I don’t want to waste time dealing with customer complaints, which reflect badly upon my reputation. My printer’s skills are vital as he produces the digital files for my manufacturers. My bags are produced in the UK which is expensive but necessary if I am to sell them at British craft shows. The bags are strong, durable, machine washable and stand the test of time. My own cow bag has been abused over the years but still serves me well. I want the images to stay on my merchandise regardless of how many wash cycles they endure. When looking to expand my range I research new manufacturers, seeking those that produce high quality products and offer an efficient, reliable service. This process involves analysing customer reviews, possibly contacting people personally and asking for honest feedback. A few test products later, I place a small order and introduce new merchandise to the market. Before launching new products I research what my customers actually want. I am starting an online forum, ‘What do you want next?’ which will showcase designs for coasters, table mats, even toilet seats, and ask for feedback. Other considerations are display and transport, along with size, weight and fragility; there is a limit to how much one can fit into a transit van. Finally, the new product must be marketed effectively; failure to do this will cripple any business. ● www.sarahbaylissfineart.co.uk

New LION catalogues out now

LION PICTURE Framing Supplies has published its 15th mouldings catalogue, featuring a new layout and over 20 new ranges. For the first time a ‘customer edition’ has also been published, without prices, for framers to show their bespoke framing customers. Copies are available on request. LION’s marketing director Nicola Harrold explains, ‘The new layout and typeface are quite a departure for us and we’ve included over 50 framed images. We published the customer edition in response to feedback; a lot of framers say they struggle to get their clients to think beyond simple black and white frames – so we hope that the many creative framing ideas featured will help them

with that. We’ve included pictures and photos that you might reflexively put in black or white frames, to show how good they can look framed slightly more interestingly.’ The 16th edition of sister publication LION Fine Print is available too. This catalogue features everything you need to create inkjet prints, stretch canvases and mount and laminate graphic panels. Picture hanging and display systems and ready-made frames are also included in the LION Fine Print catalogue. Online ‘page turning versions’ of all three LION catalogues (trade, mouldings and fine print) are available at www.lionpic.co.uk/catalogues

Free GCF exam for LifeSaver customers

Inbrief Gordon King exhibition this October

FRAMERS WHO subscribe to LifeSaver Software during 2013 enjoy a rebate of up to £118 if they qualify as a Guild Commended Framer. If you are already a GCF, the money will be deducted from your next subscription. The promotion was launched in August, since when LifeSaver have enjoyed a 600 per cent increase in internet traffic, largely due to curiosity about this collaboration. ‘The goal of the promotion is to help framers improve and grow their businesses,’ says director Eric Crowe. ‘Professional framers strive to improve and ensure that they are profitable and efficient. They take opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency such as qualifying as GCFs. We see this commitment in our LifeSaver customers, so the promotion is a natural match.’ A free 30-day trial is available to download. ‘Framers can then start to enjoy LifeSaver’s consistent, accurate pricing, one-click price comparisons,

SHOP TALK ‘My excuse is that I’m too busy, but the truth is it’s outside my comfort zone’

Jan Baker

oday I picked up the phone and called an artist I have long revered, but never met, to introduce myself and see if he would consider placing his work in the gallery. I found his contact details some weeks ago and the call was on my ‘to do’ list. I had done everything else on the list, but I had not called him. It can be hard to approach someone you admire, particularly to call them out of the blue and say how wonderful your gallery is. It is all too easy to justify leaving such calls until tomorrow. Eventually I plucked up courage, dialed the number, and left a long garbled message - giving just the sort of impression that I was hoping to avoid. Much to my surprise, the artist called me back and after a lovely conversation he agreed to place some of his work in the gallery. This is a really important bonus for us and I am so excited at the prospect. How could I have been so worried about making that call? This got me thinking about how often we business owners put things off that are slightly out of our comfort zone, but which could make a whole lot of difference to our profit. In Odiham, we retailers have got together to form a ‘Mary Portas’ type retail development group. In just a few weeks we have made some great transformations to the village, including new floral arrangements and a weekly market. One unexpected result of the

T

initiative is that we are now a much closer community, busily sharing ideas and helping one another. It’s often surprising how others view your business. Outsiders can make suggestions that may never have occurred to you and point out issues that you haven’t even noticed. After all, we all know how we would run someone else’s business; it’s all too easy to say ‘If I was them I’d be doing …’ Someone suggested that I start scanning and printing photos. Yes, I said, I have been thinking of doing that. I regularly get asked if I can scan or print photos and I have considered adding this service, but in three years all I have actually done is think about it. My excuse is that I’m too busy, but that is not really true. It is outside my comfort zone, so I keep putting it off. So I am losing customers and their framing to a shop in a neighbouring town. I know that offering this service would impact positively on my bottom line, so I need to just do it. My advice is to make a list. I put all sorts of things on mine, from phone the dentist to paint the building. Then, when I get five minutes, I phone a few decorators and ask them for quotes, so I am at least getting things moving. The things that I find harder to do just sit there, looking at me, until one day I get so fed up with seeing them that I . . . I phone the artist. Next I will sort out a photography service. Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Good luck. ● www.theframe-gallery.co.uk

The evening will start with a cocktail 14 October 2013

After dinner the winners of the 2014 awards will be revealed, then there will be dancing to a live band. Tables at dinner are for ten. Some companies take a whole table in order to entertain clients and celebrate with staff, while others come singly or in pairs and are seated with like-minded business people. Either way, the evening is a great opportunity to network and meet others in the industry. www.fineart.co.uk

It’s been a long haul but the programme is finally coming into shape, thanks to the support of the Executive, interested Guild members and e-mango, our website providers. Work continues in the background on our online art register, designed to help artists protect their intellectual property with a searchable visual database of original images backed up with the security of a long established organisation. It does seem as though I’ve been talking about the last two forever, but getting Guild flagship programmes off the ground means getting them right. Each of these projects depends on the reputation of the Fine Art Trade Guild and its standards. The Guild logo is key in getting the message to consumers that choosing a Guild member guarantees satisfaction. Members tell us that the Guild logo is a prime benefit. We will continue to add benefits when we can, to help you do business and make

A

savings. Membership secretary Daniel Radley has been investigating money saving partnership services, including utilities and web optimisation – he’d love to hear if you think these features would make your membership more worthwhile. Daniel has negotiated a fantastic deal on your behalf with Guild member Art Retail Network. My research indicates that the issue of residual stock needs addressing, as it slows down the ability of businesses to trade, yet the art in the stockroom is still saleable. The Art Retail Network offers a way to trade and access hard-to-find artwork. ARN members can access art via an online portal and can ‘call in’ works for customer approval. Fine Art Trade Guild members can join ARN for a free six month trial, so long as they load some art for sale (see page 8 for further details). Another area we are strengthening is the provision of education, especially our seminars at Spring Fair International and the Art & Framing Convention UK. Spring Fair organiser i2i Events Group have committed to a redesign of the seminar programme, with plans afoot for more hands-on classes. The Art & Framing Industry Awards 2014 launch in this edition of Art Business Today; do enter an award, come along to the awards event and make plans to attend the convention and seminar programme on Sunday 18 May 2014. ● Louise Hay is the Chief Executive of the Fine Art Trade Guild

iclée and litho printing follow the same principles. It’s just that now all of the controlling parts of the process happen before the printer starts printing! Litho printers worked alongside a repro house. Repro, or pre-press, was the image grabbing of its time. A drum scanner was used for transparencies and flexible artwork while other work was photographed with filters to separate the CMYK colours. A film, one for each of cyan, magenta, yellow and black was produced. Each film was placed on a printing plate and exposed to light which transferred the image to the plate. This was bolted to the press and the job was run. As the paper touches each plate, the image builds up. Giclée prints are made by creating a digital file and sending it to a printer. We have to take control of what is sent to the machine; everything about the end result, is controlled from the beginning. Think camera, photographer, scanner, file preparation. These are more important than printer, ink or paper. The best quality prints come from properly prepared files. There are three elements to this: size, colour and sharpness. Size doesn’t always matter. With a good 300dpi file I can print at 400 per cent at 72dpi (300 divided by four is 72) without any visible loss of quality. Before you tear your hair out, try it, or send it to your printer to test. Whether scanning or photographing,

G

include a piece of black and a piece of white card in the image. If you are taking photographs the light needs to be even. Now the Holy Grail: unsharp masking and image sharpness. I sharpen all files, whether from my scanner, a photographic studio or 99 per cent of clients. Experiment and see what suits you. Always keep the original file without changes. Make any changes and do a ‘save as’. I go back to the beginning many times. Ask your printer if they use OEM lightfast inks, if they don't, the prints may not last long. It’s the yellow and magenta that fade; look in junk shop windows at the black and blue pictures. Paper is another area to consider. My opinion is not to get too bogged down with this, as when you view most images from a few feet away behind glass in a frame, I doubt most people see a difference. Make sure the paper and ink have an acceptable blue wool scale reading though. Now the dumb animal at the end of the process, the print machine. This together with the RIP (raster image processor) produces the prints. The file gets sent to the RIP, which tells the plotter how much ink to spray, where and in what combinations. The RIP has colour profiles for the papers, and colour output space, RGB or CMYK. There is no doubt that if you can get a true RGB workflow it gives the widest colour available. ● www.mickhodson.co.uk www.gicleelondon.co.uk

Artfinder launches 0% interest loan scheme ARTFINDER.COM, AN online platform for buying affordable art, has launched a 0% interest loan scheme to help new UK collectors. The scheme, which is available for orders between £500 and £30,000, requires a ten per cent deposit with the balance payable via 12 monthly interest free payments. Customers can settle their loan early without penalty. Customers’ artwork is despatched once Artfinder receives the ten per cent deposit and artists are paid the full amount upfront. Artfinder’s scheme is more flexible and has a higher maximum loan amount and longer pay-back period than the Arts Council’s Own Art Scheme. The 18 October 2013

International framing trade mourns Roberto Farné TRAGICALLY, ITALIAN moulding supplier Roberto Farné has died suddenly aged 45 following a short battle with cancer. Roberto was due to travel to the Far East on business in July, but was sadly diagnosed with the disease two days before his planned departure date. After completing their university studies in 1990, Roberto and his twin brother Marco joined Farné Group, the business founded by their father Sergio in 1965. Roberto was export mananger of the Bologna-based business, while his brother was director of domestic sales. ‘Roberto enjoyed direct contact with customers,’ remembers Sergio. ‘The personal touch is very important in international relationships, so Roberto excelled in this role. His mobile phone was always on; time differences meant that he had to be available to international clients at night and weekends, which he was happy to do.’ ‘Roberto leaves a wife and 13-yearold daughter,’ continues his father. ‘He has marked all of our lives indelibly,

though the condolences we have received from all over the world have helped us with our grief.’ Marco gave an address at his brother’s funeral, which includes snatches from tributes received by the family. ‘These words from Roberto’s friends around the world echo round my head like a sweet poem. Here are a few of them: always in a good mood; a solid family man; a reliable partner; like a member of our family; a great professional; my best Italian friend; a social butterfly who loved people.’ Graham Knight, the UK agent for Farné Group, remembers Roberto, ‘Roberto and I had a similar understanding of and approach to the framing business. He was Farné Group’s driving force where export markets were concerned. He will be sorely missed by all his friends and contacts; we will remember his friendly, jovial approach to business and pleasure.’ Marco is now CEO of Farné Group and Sergio remains president. www.farnegroup.it

FACE TO FACE

Thank you for the music Entrepreneur ANTONIO RUSSO, who started selling his vibrantly coloured expressionist paintings 18 months ago, shares his experience of breaking into the art world What prompted you to start selling? My father died from a brain tumour so I donated a painting to a charity auction and it raised £1500. I had never thought of selling my work before, or had the confidence to do so, even though I have always painted. I met an American dealer at the event who put my work online and it started to sell. He urged me to launch my own website and show my work in the UK. I own an Italian restaurant in Hertfordshire, so I hung a few pictures there and offered them for sale, and I designed my own website. How are sales going? A local gallery owner saw my paintings in the restaurant and has taken it on. I exhibited at this year’s Spring Fair International, which was very successful, and I met Ray Loud of Buckingham Fine Art there who has since started to sell my pictures to the trade. An online gallery, The Global Art Agency, saw my work online and got in touch with me via LinkedIn and they now sell quite a few of my paintings. They hold international exhibitions and they included my artwork in a show in Amsterdam last year. I sold pictures at the show and following on from it. The Broadway Gallery in New York approached me having seen my website and they are selling my work too. What are your plans? I’ve been approached by a major publisher, who also found me through LinkedIn, and I’m considering whether I want to be under contract. I have past experience of working in the music industry where contracts can be highly restrictive and biased so I recognise that ART BUSINESS TODAY

this isn’t a step to be taken lightly. On the other hand, I’d love to be able to spend all day in my studio. Having run my own business for many years I don’t underestimate what publishers do for their artists, but that needs to be balanced against a possible loss of control. I’m going to approach more galleries; I’m not intimidated by that idea. The worst they can do is say no. Ideally I’d like to be represented by six to 12 galleries around the UK. How do you market your artwork? I’ll probably do the Spring Fair again. I promote myself using Facebook and LinkedIn, both of which are very useful. I also find www.saatchionline.com very good; emerging artists can register and upload their images, and they handle logistics and keep a percentage. I’ve just sold a painting to a collector in Los Angeles through the site. I’ve built up a good email database and I regularly contact customers with news and offers. Search engine optimisation is obviously crucial and this is something I plan to invest in soon. While SEO could be outsourced, social networking has to have an authentic personal feel, so I will continue to handle this myself. Tell us about your paintings My expressionist paintings are created while I listen to music. I feel the music and paint my feelings. The market is responding favourably to my vibrant colours, upbeat mood and the large scale of my work. I feel so liberated when faced with a blank canvas. There are no rules, I can just paint what my emotions tell me to

paint. I have no fear of failure now, which I used to have some years ago, and I paint primarily for myself, not because I care about the opinions of others. My work is therefore bold and confident, and collectors seem to pick up on this positive force. I’m gradually putting my prices up; paintings measuring 1x1.5m now sell for up to £1500. Any tips for emerging artists? You’ve got to get your work out there. At the beginning you should accept any opportunity to exhibit and seek local events and venues at which your work could be shown. Social networking is great, but only if you are very active. You’ve got to post images as soon as you finish new paintings and respond immediately to questions. People will forget about you otherwise. There’s no point in thinking that just because you’ve got a Facebook account people will find you; time and effort are required. You’ve got to grab any opportunities that come your way. Even when I’m going on holiday I pack leaflets and catalogues; you never know who you might meet. And don’t be frightened to promote your work. I met the owner of an international hotel chain at a social event recently; I suggested that they should buy some of my paintings to brighten up their hotels and I now have a meeting scheduled with their interior designer. If you keep on pushing and promoting yourself, it’ll all come together one day. But no one can afford to stop making an effort. ● www.arussoart.com See Antonio’s work on page 26 October 2013 25

Anne Corless

Eli-Chem Resins

The inspiration for A Gentle Touch comes from spending time watching, sketching and photographing wildlife in Kenya many years ago. As with all Anne Corless’ artwork, the reference is her own and she is delighted that this captured moment is now available as limited edition giclée prints produced by Towngate Publications. Part of the proceeds of sales of this print will be donated to a wildlife charity. The artist is thrilled that this mixed media painting has been accepted into the Artists for Conservation 2013 festival in Vancouver.

Eli-Chem Resins has launched a revolutionary step forward in pigments for artwork. Eli-Glow is the latest pioneering technology in creating stunning effects that come alive in the dark. These amazing pigments are available in a fine crystal form for easy mixing into Clear Artwork Resins. They can be added to the resin or sprinkled over the surface and sealed in place with a brush. By day the crystals absorb UV light and after dark they release energy in a long-lasting glow. This enables the artist to achieve two very different effects as the light changes. Unlike conventional pigments, Eli-Glow is not a primary light reflector, but is an actual source of light. The available colours are green and aquamarine blue, with more to follow soon. Eli-Glow pigments release light for up to ten hours in darkness and ‘charge up’ in minutes.

Business insurance is an unexciting necessity so it’s tempting to spend as little as possible on it, but inadequate cover can turn out to be a complete waste of money when it comes to making a claim. THE EXPERT’S VIEW Mike Collinson Besso Limited There are many unique features of art and framing businesses that aren’t normally covered by standard shop policies. There’s no point in doing half a job; I always say that you should either take out proper insurance or don’t bother. You need ‘entrusted stock cover’, for example, so that paintings you are selling on behalf of artists are insured, as well artwork you are framing for members of the public. I recommend ‘process cover’ too, which means that you are insured if you inadvertantly damage a customer’s picture while framing it, or if a third party that you have given work to, such as a paper conservator, accidently damages or loses your customer’s artwork. It only costs around £50 a year for process cover on works up to £2500 in value. We cover pictures out ‘on apro’ up to a stated limit, so you can lend artwork to customers over the weekend, pending their decision to buy. We insure customers who exhibit at art fairs all over the world too. www.besso.co.uk

But the key to success is to remain single-minded and focus on the most important tasks. I suspect that many of us have so many exciting ideas that we end up not acting on any of them. It’s a good plan to write down all your ideas, then just choose one at a time. The most important thing is to form a course of action, not just to operate on a whim. Remember, you can’t do everything. Beware of spreading yourself too thin; delegate where possible and set realistic goals. Look at where your business is now, where you want to go, how to get there and how to measure your achievements. What sort of goals should small art and framing businesses set? Here are some examples:

* How are you displaying goods and samples? Could this be improved? Take the time to look for inspiration. Look at what other retailers are doing. Make sure that displays are changed regularly. * Look long and hard at your margins. Are you charging realistic prices? If not, look at how these could be developed. * Are you selling the right goods and services? Maybe some lines should be discontinued and others introduced. Perhaps you should diversify into new areas that will attract new customers * Consider working more closely with other retailers. Joint marketing initiatives such as street fairs, Christmas shopping nights and group special offers work well for many. * Networking is invaluable for small businesses. Look at the opportunities available to you then join the right business groups and associations. * Take part in shows and exhibitions, including regional events, art and craft fairs, interior design and furniture exhibitions, and special interest events.

Altered Images “McAlpine Miller is one of the best artists of our time, painting about our time, in the best way I’ve seen. This is how he is changing the course of art history - much in the same way that Da Vinci, Monet and Picasso did. The art of tomorrow starts here...” Praise indeed from art critic Estelle Lovatt, who makes no bones about her interest in McAlpine Miller’s work, “he is a painter and a public entertainer” she says when asked about Stuart McAlpine Miller as an artist. And this is certainly evident in his new collection of artwork, ‘Altered Images’. This distinctive and striking collection features effortlessly stylish, supermodel-esque women superimposed over brightly coloured cartoons; the übermodern teamed with the en trend classic vintage feel of the comic book references. At merely the most basic of levels, these oil paintings are undeniably aesthetically pleasing, one does not need to be a connoisseur of art to appreciate that, but like the layers within his paintings, there is far much more going on where McAlpine Miller is concerned. Trained at Glasgow School of Art, McAlpine Miller considers these formative years in his career as fundamental in shaping the artist he is today, allowing him to develop artistically without the pressure of having to earn a living. “I was very passionate and determined to make it as an artist and so was very active on the arts scene, probably more than most students,” he says of his time in Glasgow. Scottish-born and bred, McAlpine Miller spent a further twenty years after art school toiling at the

coal face of art and it was in part, the tenacity and sense of humour synonymous with a Scottish heritage, that got him through the dark times. Developing his distinctive style over many years, McAlpine Miller now occupies a unique territory in the contemporary art scene; adeptly combining Renaissance influences (he cites The Supper at Ammaus by Caravaggio as one of his favourite pieces) with a surrealist and contemporary edge and an obvious nod to pop art...admittedly difficult to imagine such a representation, yet all elements work in beautiful harmony following the McAlpine Miller treatment, who demonstrates again and again he is an artist with a skilful command of his medium. The medium, the medium that wins him fans and collectors across the globe, was fifteen years in the making. The astonishing craftsmanship displayed by McAlpine Miller almost goes unappreciated such is the expertise of the execution, it seems, almost effortless. But effortless it is not, painting in oils first and then layering with watercolours to achieve the right effect, his technique requires he works two or three inches away from the canvas at all times and employs a variety of tools, including multiple pairs of prescription glasses and magnifying glasses to achieve the layered, computergenerated look we see in his work. Estelle Lovatt continues: “All the things that David Hockney can do with an iPad in terms of colour, collaged composition and cutand-paste layering, McAlpine Miller takes full circle by doing “new school “ in an “old school” style all,

STUART MCALPINE MILLER IS A RISING STAR IN THE CONTEMPORARY ART WORLD, BUT WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES HIS WORK SO DESIRABLE? LAURA MCBETH WRITES FOR WASHINGTON GREEN FINE ART incredibly, with his oil paints! McAlpine Miller is taking Hockney a step further, by taking it a step backwards. Being far more complex, with traditional oil paints!” Important in a McAlpine Miller painting is the representation of light and indeed, the illusion of light, but unique in this nod to the Chiaroscurist technique is his bold and unapologetic use of colour. His use of colour is as broad as it is specific; he is comfortable operating within a palette covering a thousand different permutations of colour yet adept and precise enough to pick just the right one for the job, the one that makes you stop and take a second look. And a third. Flick through a Pantone reference book and you’ll see a McAlpine Miller on every leaf, the awesome spectrum of colour in his work is unlike anything around today. In all of this, McAlpine Miller is garnering more and more attention from the contemporary art scene and beyond, his work unsurprisingly has been exhibited throughout Europe and the States, he counts Sir Paul McCartney as one of his collectors and in 2012 was chosen as the artist-in-residence of London’s Savoy hotel (following in the footsteps of Whistler and Monet) during which he created a series of eight original paintings in his inimitable style featuring icons of stage and screen. And now, to 2013 – McAlpine Miller opens his first exhibition of paintings since partnering with fine art publisher Washington Green. Opening at the publisher’s flagship gallery in Mayfair this September, ‘Altered Images’ is described as a unique merger of today’s science of

technology with the prowess of ‘live’ cartoon action. The exhibition, which opens on 27 September at Castle Fine Art, Bruton Street, is entitled ‘Altered Images’ and was a year in the making. McAlpine Miller says the collection takes the idea of the central figure and exposes an alternative opinion of that character, he hopes to reveal the on-going nature of the transparent life: “Beauty is skin-deep and our ability to hide behind the facade has become something of a 21st century art form” he observes. Glyn Washington, managing director and co-founder of Washington Green Fine Art, adds: “We’re extremely proud to represent Stuart McAlpine Miller and have him as part of our extensive portfolio of artists. His art is truly unique and he paints with such precision that his works almost resemble a 3D computergenerated image, and yet remarkably they are oil. This is the first time McAlpine Miller has released an original collection since partnering with us and we know it will be a huge success with his fans and collectors.” Altered Images, Castle Fine Art, Mayfair 27 September – 20 October 2013 castlegalleries.com | washingtongreen.co.uk
