“The combined use of hands and imagination makes an important contribution to what it means ‘to know’ something. You cannot learn to play tennis by reading a book.” JEROME KAGAN AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGIST
Director's Letter
In education today, the conversation frequently centers on raising test scores and better preparing children for college in an everchanging world. The undeniable role creativity plays in promoting innovation, experimentation, risk-taking and personal growth is often missing from this discussion. Helping children reach their creative potential and giving them the tools they need to design and build the world—as they imagine it—is our goal in Art Center for Kids.
3
It’s a goal that demands a different approach—one that is adventurous, engaging and challenging. To that end, we help students explore new solutions and develop new skills to give them confidence in their creative ability to pursue original and meaningful ideas. Here in Art Center for Kids, we motivate students to express them‑ selves in new ways and discover their sources of inspiration. Our classes mirror the many disciplines offered at Art Center and are taught by members of the College’s community—faculty, alumni, undergraduate and graduate students—who encourage new ways of thinking, seeing and doing.
We believe an art and design education can improve children’s lives in many ways, from promoting collaboration to inspiring career goals. But no benefit is more important than simply helping them see that they can make their imagination visible and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Paula Goodman Director, K–12 Programs

Open House & Art Center for Kids Goes to Mars
Art Center for Kids welcomes elementary and middle school students, parents and educators to our Open House, which is held at the end of each seven-week session. Please refer to the Calendar (at left) for Open House dates. All Art Center for Kids classes scheduled at Hillside Campus meet in the cafeteria at 4 p.m. to exhibit their work. Classes scheduled at South Campus meet in their assigned classrooms. Open House is a great opportunity to learn more about the classes offered through Art Center for Kids.
ART CENTER FOR KIDS GOES TO MARS Each Spring term, all Art Center for Kids classes— from Design-a-Robot to Fashion Sketching—focus on a common theme: imagining life on Mars. It’s part of the Imagine Mars Program sponsored by NASA and the National Endowment for the Arts, a program that takes students on a virtual mission to Mars.
